T

he history of God’s people during the ages of darkness that followed upon Rome’s supremacy, is written in Heaven. But they have little place in human records. Few traces of their existence can be found, except in the accusations of their persecutors. It was the policy of Rome to obliterate every trace of dissent from her doctrines or decrees. (GC88) For the next several weeks you will embark in the experience of a lifetime.

Your feet will tread in the footsteps of great men and women of yesteryear.

Men and women who were willing to set set sail from the safe harbors of comfort, ease and contentment and embark on a journey towards unknown horizons of hope.

They longed for a better world where freedom awaited and their destinies where not prescribed by man’s opinions but on a clear “thus saith the Lord.”....

Your eyes will behold the places like the Mamertine prison where the powerful preacher Paul went from persecutor to persecuted. From being renowned to being reviled. From being offered rewards and riches to being censured, castigated and ultimately have his head cut off. You will walk the footsteps of the once impetuous Peter. A man who was afraid of suffering and yet ultimately converted from being the one who denied his Savior to bold declaring his Master. We will walk the streets of Florence and in our minds eyes imagine what it would have been like to see the masterful Michaelangelo take a behemoth block of plain unassuming marble and create such fabulous artistry that millions come from far and near to behold his sculptures. We will climb the

Waldensian hills and valleys surrounding the snow capped Italian Alps and our thoughts will be transported to a people whose conscience was as “true to duty as the needle to the pole”; men and women who would “stand for the right though the heavens might fall.” We will work our way northward into the French Alps towards the hotbed of the radical reformation and hear the stories of men like John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli and women like Marie Dentiere and Katharine Zell.

Our hearts will thrill as we walk the cobblestone streets of Konstanz and hear of the hope of Huss and the courage of Calvin. We will hear the story of the unwavering, unflinching Wycliffe, the fortitude of Ferell and the faith unswerving of Zwingli.

We will visit the tombstone of the indefatigable John N. Andrews and upon his burial place imagine what it would have been like to be the first official adventist missionary overseas after being GC president and being editor of the Review and Herald magazine.

Imagine what must it be like to blaze a trail who’s outcome you would not see in your lifetime but would only be left for posterity to peruse. And then we will behold the crown jewels of our tour: the places where the humble monk Martin Luther would have stood before the great emperor of his days and declared “here I stand; I can do no other”....the castle where his friends would have kidnapped him for his own protection and the place where the 95 theses would have been nailed to the the cathedral of the Al Saints church. In Wittenburg. And yet in all this our mind must turn inwardly to our own lives. What about us? What about you? Perhaps you feel that you

have little to look forward to? Then may you take hope that the same God who could inspire Caleb to climb mountains still does just that; that the Lord who impressed Luther to light a fire in Europe that would never be removed can rekindle your fire to serve Him faithfully to your dying day.

That there is alive today the same Christ who inspired Paul in a dreary dungeon cell to leave a burning promise when he unabashedly declared to the Philippians that “He who hath began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it in you.”

May you go in the knowledge that in the two plus weeks you will not only see a bit of history but that you will also see and hear His story. The story of God’s goodness to humanity in bringing the “light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”.

May the Lord of Luther light your fire.

May the Christ of Calvin conduct your steps. May the Prince of Paul and Potentate of Peter inspire your path.

May you leave with a profound appreciation of the sacrifices made for the faith we hold so dear. And may you with Paul’s letter to the city of our beginning journey Rome say Lord make me a ‘living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God” which is my spiritual worship.

Average June Temperatures The weather is fantastic in Italy in June, when the average temperature starts off at around 68°F and gradually climbs up to 73°F -75°F as the month progresses. In Switzerland, warm, an average of 68°F a great temperature for being out and about. In Berlin the average daily temperature for this month is about 63°F.

urope’s electrical system is different from ours in two ways: the voltage of the current and the shape of the plug. American appliances run on 110 volts, while European appliances are 220 volts.

W

hat you do have to pay attention to is the plug. A small adapter allows American-style plugs (two flat prongs) to fit into continental European outlets (which take two round prongs).

Packing List and tips

Important Travel Documents, Cash and Credit Cards Start by collecting all of your important documents in a travel document organizer (this travel organizer holds a passport, ID, credit cards, coins, documents, a boarding pass, and a pen!). This will help ensure everything you need to get from one place to the next is all in one place.

Think about including the following documents: • Passport/visa(s) • Personal ID • Cash and credit card(s) • Health insurance cards/document(s) • Travel insurance info • Reservations and itineraries • Hotel and/or tour contact information • Transportation tickets (plane, train, bus, car, etc.) • Emergency contacts and important addresses.

It’s a good idea to double-check your passports and IDs aren’t expired. You’ll also want to inform your bank if you’re traveling abroad so they don’t assume fraudulent activity and freeze your card. You may also want to email yourself a copy of your passport, driver’s license, medical cards and itinerary, so if anything happens to them you’ll be able to access them online.

When you have many different types of activities and a variety of gear to pack in your suitcase, keeping everything organized can be a challenge. Make sure you use packing organizers. Keeping your suitcase organized with packing organizers will make it easy to get from one place to the next.

All air travelers must arrive at the airport well in advance of their international flights. They’ll need time to check baggage and might need to check in for the flight. In addition, all passengers must pass through the TSA screening checkpoint before receiving access to the airport’s secure boarding area. Each airline and airport has its own recommendations on the best time to arrive at the airport, and travelers should select the time frame that works best for them. Travelers must remember to include travel time both to and through the airport when planning their arrival time. Delays in travel to the airport are more likely during high traffic periods, such as rush hour. ome experience culture shock, if we measure cultures differently (maybe according to stress, loneliness, heart attack rates, hours spent in traffic jams, or family togetherness), the results stack up differently. It’s best not to fall into the “rating game.” All societies are complex and highly developed in their own way.

Prescription to cure culture shock: • Make a local friend, someone you can confide in and learn from.

• Most important, remember that different people find different truths to be “God-given” and “self-evident.” Things work best if we give everybody a little wiggle room. And that goes for more than just travelers.

• Assume “strange” habits in this “strange” land are logical. Think of these habits as clever solutions to life’s problems.

• Be militantly positive. Don’t joke disapprovingly about a culture you’re trying to understand.

s roughly elliptical in shape, with its long axis measures 188 metres and the short one 156. The building

stands on a base of two steps; above it there are three floors of arcades and a fourth storey without arches but with small rectangular windows. There were eighty arches on every floor, divided by pillars with a half column.

n impressive – if rather confusing – sprawl of ruins, the Roman Forum was ancient Rome’s showpiece centre, a grandiose district of temples, basilicas and vibrant public spaces. The site, which

was originally an Etruscan burial ground, was first developed in the 7th century BC, growing over time to become the social, political and commercial hub of the Roman empire. The Forum fell into disrepair.

5 Titus’ Arch of Triumph

The divinity of the late emperor Titus The Arch of Titus is a Roman Triumphal Arch which was erected by Domitian in c. 81 CE at the foot of the Palatine hill on the Via Sacra in the Forum Romanum, Rome. It commemorates the victories of his father Vespasian and brother Titus in the Jewish War in Judaea (70-71 CE) when the great city of Jerusalem was sacked and the vast riches of its temple plundered. The arch is also a political and religious statement expressing the divinity of the late emperor Titus. The arch was constructed using Pentelic marble, with the attic part in Luna marble.

Vatican City State was founded following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and Italy on February 11th 1929. Is an independent state, the temporal seat of the Pope, head of the worldwide Catholic Church; entirely surrounded by the city of Rome, in Italy, the Vatican is also the world’s smallest state. Outside Vatican City itself, thirteen buildings in Rome and one at Castel Gandolfo (the Pope’s summer residence) also enjoy extraterritorial rights. On March 13, 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pontiff and thus ruler of the Vatican, taking the name Francis.

Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) was an Italian Dominican friar and preacher active in Renaissance Florence. He was known for his prophecies of civic glory, the destruction of secular art and culture, and his calls for Christian renewal.

Florence’s cathedral (the Duomo) stands tall over the city with its magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, with the baptistery right across.

The cathedral named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the church of Santa Reparata.

Michelangelo was only 26 years old in 1501, but he was already the most famous in his days. He accepted the challenge with enthusiasm to sculpt a large scale David and worked constantly for over two years to create one of his most breathtaking masterpieces of gleaming white marble.

Built very close to the Roman crossing, the Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, was the only bridge across the Arno in Florence until 1218. The current bridge was rebuilt after a flood in 1345. During World War II it was the only bridge across the Arno that the fleeing Germans did not destroy.

The Accademia welcomes the visitor in the Hall of the Colossus, name taken from the huge models of the Dioscuri of Montecavallo which were displayed in this large hall in the 19th century.

It now hosts in the center the plaster model for the stunning marble sculpture of Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women.

Inside the College of the Barbes, safe in mountains at Pra del Torno. Here trainee Vaudois preachers read the Bible, by candlelight, and committed it to memory, throughout the Middle Ages. This dark room was The Waldensian Theological College. A narrow Alpine valley starting in Val Pellice, the valley of Angrogna ends at the village of Pra del Torno which was the location of a Waldensian mission centre during The Middle Ages.

The Campus Adventiste du Saleve considers that its educative mission would be incomplete without the transmission of values on the purpose of life, a persons dignity and living out Adventist faith. These Christian values, that the campus carries out are based on the Bible. Right from the first years after the Adventist pioneers came to establish themselves in Europe at the beginning of 1900.

Lake Geneva (Lac Léman to the locals) is land-locked Switzerland’s largest body of water, though most of its southern shore is in French territory. The lake is ringed by Alps and almost any point along the shore offers jaw-dropping scenery, as well as some of the most sought-after real estate in the world. in the western extremity of the lake is Geneva.

Known both as the «smallet of big cities», or the «city of peace», Geneva is home to the European headquarters of UNO. The quayside of Lake Geneva, the parks, the old alleyways and smart boutiques are an invitation to a leisurely stroll. Geneva it is the seat of a number of major multinationals, as well as the International Red Cross Committee.

He worked together with John Calvin to train missionaries across Europe.

2 John Calvin (1509–1564)

Center Left. He mainly influenced Presbyterian Church doctrine and Reformed theology.

He began “Systematic Theology” with his book Institutes of the Christian Religion. John Calvin wrote one of the largest set of Bible commentaries during his time.

He trained and sent missionaries across Europe.

3 Theodore (1519–1605)

Beza

Center Right. He was a disciple of John Calvin and later became John Calvin’s successor in Geneva.

He further spread Reformed theology in France.

4 John Knox (c.1513–1572)

Right. He studied under John Calvin after being declared an outlaw in England by Queen “Bloody” Mary. He later founded the Presbyterian church in Scotland.

To the right of the middle statues are three smaller statues of Roger Williams (1603 – 1684) he was an English Particular Baptist theologian, Oliver Cromwell (1599 – 1657) he was a “independent” puritan that became a dictator called the “Protectorate”, and Stephen Bocskay (1557 – 1607) He was a Hungarian Noble who was a Calvinist protestant.

4 Calvin’s Church Also known as St. Pierre Cathedral

St. Peter’s Cathedral (English), or Saint Pierre Cathedral (Fench) is over 850 years old Geneva’s main church, famous for Jan Kalvin preaching here. St. Peter’s Cathedral is located in the center of Geneva’s Old Town, slightly on the hill overseeing the city, combining various architectural styles from Gothic to Ancient, as it was being rebuilt over the centuries. Since 16th century Cathedral belongs the Reformed Church.

The MIR (International Museum of the Reformation) was founded in 2005 with the aim of showcasing the living history of Geneva and the Reformation. John Knox pastored an English congregation and spent the happiest time of this life on the shores of Lake Leman, beneath the shadow of the Alps, and, to use Knox’s own words: “in the most perfect school of Christ that ever was since the days of the apostles.” His influence was great, especially on some of the nobles.

North and South Towers are available for visitors vith outstanding views over Geneva. Cathedral also hosts numerous concerts, there is an archaeological site and Maccabean Caple located here and open for the public.

onstanz lies on the border with Switzerland and on Lake Constance (Bodensee), exactly where the river Rhine exits the lake. The city is split in two by the Rhine. Constance is a town of great historical relevance. For the most part it wasn’t affected by the wars of the last century and was to be of historical significance throughout a certain period of time. From the 6th century until the year 1827, Constance was the bishop’s see of the largest German diocese.

1546), Initiator of the Protestant Reformation. Seated at his feet are the main forerunners of the Reformation: Girolamo Savonarola (Ferrara 1452 - Florence 1498), an Italian Dominican friar, Scholastic, preached vehemently against the moral corruption of much of the clergy at the time.

Peter Waldo also Pierre Vaudès or de Vaux (c. 1140 - c. 1218), credited as the founder of the Waldensians, a Christian spiritual movement of the Middle Ages.

After John Wycliffe, the theorist of ecclesiastical Reformation, he was, before Luther, Calvin and Zwingli, the first actual Church reformer.

On the corners in front of Luther, two powerful princes who played a large role in the political success of the Reformation: Friedrich III., auch Friedrich der Weise, Kurfürst von Sachsen (Torgau 1463 - Langau 1525), defender of Luther and the Protestant Reformation - Philipp I. der Großmütige Landgraf von Hessen (Marburg 1504 - Kassel 1567) German ruler of the Reformation.

On the corners behind Luther, two important Protestant scholars: Johannes Reuchlin (Pforzheim 1455 Stuttgart 1522), a German humanist and a scholar of Greek and Hebrew, Philipp Melanchthon (Bretren 1497 - Wittenberg 1560), born Philipp Schwartzerdt, was a German reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation.

Three seated women on the sides represent the first German cities to adopt Protestantism:- Confessio Augustana of 1530 and the Augsburger Religionsfrieden of 1555.

The Wartburg Castle was the home of Saint Elisabeth and its mighty walls provided refuge for Martin Luther for almost a year after he was ostracised and excommunicated by Rome following the Diet of Worms (1521). Luther lived incognito at the Wartburg; he called himself Junker Jörg (Knight George) and “grew his hair and a beard.” It was here that he started

translating the New Testament into German, laying the foundations for a standardised German language.

Luther suffered from the exile “in the empire of outlaws” and complained of various physical ailments. In addition the many fights with Satan, recounted both by himself and friends, like the proverbial Throwing of the Inkwell must have been difficult to work through...

With Mainz and Speyer, Worms is home to one of the three great imperial cathedrals on the Upper Rhine.

Worms Cathedral (is one of the finest examples of High Romanesque architecture in Germany. Worms Cathedral has a highly distinctive appearance from the outside. For nearly 1,000 years, the unique and majestic Worms Cathedral has risen above all the other ancient buildings of the city, dominating the skyline even from a distance. Its original Romanesque architecture and splendid carvings are still exceptionally well-preserved. The origins of Worms Cathedral go back to early Christian times. The first Bishop of Worms was Berthulf, in 614 AD; his cathedral was much smaller.

Ishtar Gate Pergamon Museum

The Ishtar Gate was constructed by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II circa 575 BCE. It was the eighth gate of the city of Babylon (in present day Iraq) and was the main entrance into the city. The Ishtar Gate was part of Nebuchadnezzar’s plan to beautify his empire’s capital and during the first half of the 6th century BCE, he also restored the temple of Marduk and built the renowned wonder: the Hanging Gardens as part of this plan. The magnificence of the Ishtar Gate was so well known that it made the initial list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. However, it was later replaced by the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

erlin is best known for its historical associations as the German capital, internationalism and tolerance, lively nightlife, its many cafes, clubs, bars, street art, and numerous museums, palaces, and other sites of historic interest. Berlin’s architecture is quite varied. Although badly damaged in the final years of World War II and broken apart during the Cold War, Berlin has reconstructed itself greatly, especially with the reunification push after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Germany was later on divided into east and west.

In August 13,1961, East Germans permanently closed the border between East and West. The wall had 45,000 sections of reinforced concrete and included 79 miles of fencing, nearly 300 watchtowers and 250 guard dogs. Still more than 5,000 people escaped to freedom.

Pergamon Museum has an incredible collection of exquisite classical treasures such as the striking reconstructions of archaeological buildings – the Pergamon Altar of Zeus, Roman market gate of Milet and Ishtar Gate with the Processional Way of Babylon and the Mshatta façade. The impressive building - one of five on Berlin’s Museum Island - houses three museums.

The Battle of Berlin, designated the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation by the Soviet Union, was the final major offensive of the European theatre of World War II. Before the battle was over, Hitler and several of his followers killed themselves.

Soviet forces sustained 81,116 dead for the entire operation.

Altar of Zeus The greatest example of Hellenistic Greek sculpture, the colossal Altar of Zeus at Pergamon, near Izmir (Turkey), is a monumental work of Greek art built by King Eumenes II of the Attalid dynasty, from about 166 to 156 BCE. The altar is adorned with a 370-foot long marble frieze which depicts the Gigantomachy from Greek mythology.

Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany), starting on 13 August 1961, the Wall completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in 1992.

Brandenburg Gate Was erected between 1788 and 1791 according to designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans. Is one of Berlin’s most important monuments – a landmark and symbol all in one with over two hundred years of history.

A symbol of the divided city, it drew visitors who used to climb an observation platform in order to get a glimpse of the world behind the Iron Curtain, on the other side of the barren “death-strip” which separated East from West Berlin, geographically and politically. When Germany was reunified following the fall of the Berlin wall in November 1989 Brandenburg Gate quickly reinvented itself into the New Berlin’s symbol of unity. It was officially opened on December 22, 1989 and 100,000 people came to celebrate the occasion.

John Wycliffe was professor at Oxford. He was an influential dissident within the Roman Catholic priesthood during the 14th century. Wycliffe attacked the privileged status of the clergy, which was central to their powerful role in England. He then attacked the luxury and pomp of local parishes and their ceremonies.

John Wycliffe left quite an impression on the church: 43 years after his death, officials dug up his body, burned his remains, and threw the ashes into the river Swift. Still, they couldn’t get rid of him. Wycliffe’s teachings, though suppressed, continued to spread.

He left for Oxford University in 1346, he was not able to earn his doctorate until 1372.
