Dear Parents, A bumper issue awaits you to read over this long weekend. So many class highlights over the past few weeks including some quite remarkable and glamorous wedding portraits from our P2 children. Thank you so much to our Chinese community who delivered such a wonderful assembly last Friday with a fabulous lion dance to help celebrate the New Year. Today we were blessed with the perfect weather for the Rampayoh Sports Day. It was lovely to see our youngest students have so much fun, competing in their house teams. The opportunity to develop their personal qualities, especially those of cooperation, resilience and communication is so valuable in such a public event. Congratulations to all of the children who participated so very well and well done to the Red House for attaining the most points during the morning. Thank you to the parents and staff for providing such a positive environment, with a special thank you to Miss Melissa for organising and pulling everything and everyone together. I am sure everyone is aware that school is closed tomorrow for Brunei National Day; we will be celebrating this next Friday in our Whole School Assembly. A reminder that if you ordered a Brunei National Day shirt, they are available from both sites. Have a lovely long weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday.

Best Wishes, Brian, SLT and all of our staff.

Chinese New Year Whole School Assembly

The whole school came together to celebrate Chinese New Year. We were thrilled to have Lion Dance performance which electrified the atmosphere. Additionally, we had three local boys from Chung Hua School showcase their martial arts skills called ‘Wushu’, which was a display of strength and tradition. Lastly, to wrap up our school assembly, one of the parents from the Chinese community conducted a quiz, adding an educational twist to the festivities. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Chinese community for bringing this event together and making it a memorable celebration for everyone involved.

P2 ART: PORTRAITS OF A WEDDING During our art sessions, we've been expanding our understanding of mark-making and color application, putting these skills into practice in our artwork. In creating portraits of our parents and family, we honed our hand-eye coordination. We observed and carefully replicated details using varying pencil pressures to make prints. Additionally, we meticulously color-matched hues to the original photographs and chose complementary colors for the backgrounds. The final results are something we take pride in, and we sincerely hope you enjoy them too.

Mystery Science Lava Experiment P5 did an investigation exploring why volcanoes are different shapes. We found out that volcanoes with thin lava form shield volcanoes and thick lava form composite volcanoes.

Issue 148 | 22nd February 2024

We also conducted a fair test attempting to answer the question : do all liquids flow at the same speed?

Issue 148 | 22nd February 2024

Using our design and technology skills we created volcanoes based on real world examples. We then visited the Science Labs in order to create our own volcanic eruptions. It was an explosive afternoon!

The P6 Sleepover

P6 had an exciting sleepover in school last Thursday. This is to help us prepare for our residential trip in term 3. We played in the playground until it got dark! Following this, we watched a film, ate popcorn and drank hot chocolate.

The P6 Sleepover

After sleeping in the library and dance and drama room, we got up super early, in time to join running club. Despite feeling tired, everyone managed to run at least part of the circuit.

We finished with some calm time at Panaga Club library, recommending good books to one another.

The P6 Sleepover At first it felt strange having lots of people sleeping all around you but then you get used to it.

I felt really nervous and also excited beforehand but watching the movie was all cosy and the popcorn was yummy!

It was really fun because it was my birthday.

At first I felt nervous because it was my first sleepover but it was actually really fun.

This is what some of the P6 children had to say about our sleepover. If you have a school sleepover coming up, you could ask the P6s to tell you more about it. Breakfast at Panaga Club was delicious.

Everyone playing together was so much fun.

My favourite bit was watching Chicken Run because it was REALLY funny.

The reason I liked it was because the boys and girls all played Ultra-Tag together.

Chess Competition Final This year’s chess final took place on Monday, 5th February in the Teraja Hall. The two participants were Edward from M2 and Ryan from P6. Edward, who had the white pieces, began with the Ruy Lopez opening, whilst Ryan countered by developing his pieces accurately and controlling the centre of the board. Edward miscalculated during an exchange of pieces, which resulted in him losing a knight. He was unable to overcome this deficit and Ryan pressed home his advantage. Ryan eventually surprised Edward with a devastating attack with his queen, which resulted in Edward resigning when unable to prevent a back-rank checkmate. Around 100 children watched the game, which was projected onto the screen in the hall. The children spectated respectfully and applauded both participants at the end of the exciting game. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the 91 children who took part in the competition, along with the teachers who supported the final. If your child would like to learn how to play chess or develop new strategies, there is a weekly chess ASA for children of all abilities. Feel free to contact me if you have any chess-related questions (matthewfagg@panagaschool.net).

Project-Based Learning in History The children in M2 have been learning about the Second World War in Asia this term. In order to develop their historical skills, the children are engaging in a local history study about the Japanese occupation of Borneo using a project-based learning approach (Larmer & Mergendoller, 2015).

The project-based learning approach involves beginning topics with an exciting entry event. The children were going to meet Lynette Silver, who is the world’s leading authority on Borneo in the Second World War, but she unfortunately had to pull out at the last minute. Instead, the children were able to interview Dr White (otherwise known as Ollie’s dad), who used his extensive knowledge to answer the children’s challenging questions. Following that, the children chose the aspect of the Japanese occupation they wanted to research along with the questions they wanted to answer. The topics chosen by the children included everyday life during the occupation, the Batu Lintang camp in Kuching, the Sandakan prisoner-of-war camp, Operation Semut and the Ranau Marches. The children worked collaboratively and used a range of primary and secondary sources of evidence to find out more about their area of expertise.

Issue 148 | 22nd February 2024

For example, the children researching Operation Semut found out that several special-force operatives from Australia parachuted into the Bornean jungle in March 1945 and trained local people to fight back against the Japanese occupation. Headhunting was also encouraged and headhunters were paid five Dutch Guilders for every Japanese soldier’s head they detached. Reflecting on feedback is a key part of using a project-based approach, and the children were able to do this by assessing each other’s work using rubrics. The teacher also provided regular feedback to the children. The children’s final product will be a presentation to their parents, which they will be giving on Wednesday, 28th February at 7:30am. As the children have not yet finished their projects, we would love to hear from you if you have any knowledge of what happened in Borneo during the Japanese occupation. Perhaps you know someone who lived through these times and is able to share their experiences. Or perhaps you have an artefact from that time that the children could see. If you would like to contact me about this fascinating period of Borneo’s history, please email me at matthewfagg@panagaschool.net
