WHAT DO DOCTORS DO WHEN THEY HAVE NECK OR BACK PAIN?

L

ast month, a local orthopedic doctor came into our office looking for a solution. He said that he had seen too many patients with failed back surgery and when he started experiencing low back pain and sciatica, he was NOT willing to even consider surgery as an option. After hearing from a few of our patients that our non-surgical spinal decompression saved them from surgery, he was interested to learn more. Every single patient that walks through our doors, regardless of background, undergoes an extensive consultation, thorough review of MRI’s, and a full set of x-rays if they are medically necessary. Only then do we determine whether or not they are a good candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression and make the decision of whether or not to take on their case.

ARE YOU OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE?

If you experience any of the following in your neck or back then most likely you are suffering due to a bulging or herniated disc: • Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless nights • Back or neck injury as the result of an accident • Back or leg pain when seated • Numbness in your hands or toes • Degenerative disc disease • Herniated and bulging discs • Toothache like pain that goes down your leg or in one of your buttocks DRX9000

Dr. Carl Conforti, D.C. Dr. Todd Bodanza, D.C. & Dr. Damien Rogers, D.C.

• Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery

FINALLY, A SOLUTION!

Most patients that come to us with herniated and bulging discs tell the same story. They have been given a few options: • Deal with the pain • Physical Therapy • Exercise • Pain Medications • Harmful Shots • Painful Surgery The majority of the people who come to our office have tried one or 3 of these options or are afraid to try anything because of the side effects. Whichever situation you have found yourself in, you owe it to yourself to learn more about our State of the Art Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression treatment for neck and back pain sufferers caused by bulging, herniated, or squashed discs.

HOW DOES THE MACHINE WORK?

Last time you were in excruciating pain, you probably thought to yourself “I wish someone could grab my arms and legs and pull me apart and everything would feel so much better.” Well the team of scientists, neurosurgeons, and engineers that developed the DRX9000 came up with just that. A machine that stretches the discs to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc caus-

ing the herniation to suck back in. In our offices, we have treated thousands of patients with our non-surgical DRX with remarkable results. There are only a small percentage of people that are not right for our treatment, and with your complimentary consultation, we will determine if your case is right.

SINCE WE ARE DETERMINED TO PUT AN END TO UNNECESSARY NECK AND BACK SURGERIES, WE ARE OFFERING

THE FREE BULGING AND HERNIATED DISC ASSESSMENT

($195 VALUE)

NO CHARGE AT ALL!! And we WILL determine if you qualify for this state of the art technology. We do not let anyone leave our office wondering if our treatment could have helped you get rid of your pain. During your candidate assessment, we will target all of the factors necessary to qualify you for the treatment that will save you from harmful shots and surgeries. THE PATIENT AND ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT FOR ANY OTHER SERVICE, EXAMINATIONS OR TREATMENT WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE DISCOUNTED SERVICE.

“Hot fun in the summer time” an oldie but a goody by Sly and the Family Stone and so true. Summer is the time we spend more time outdoors (as long as it not to hot) because of the longer daylight hours. The water is warmer, the beach is beachier, the Parks are Parkier and there is always something to do. We all take this time to try and relax and enjoy life to its fullest. That great tan (don’t forget the SPF tanning lotion and easy does it), refreshing picnics in the park with family and friends and an all around good time. We have a lot of patients that travel in the summer, to camps, relatives and vacation locations and it’s important that they remember to take care of their braces. Watch what you eat, brush, and if you are supposed to wear elastics continue as directed by your Orthodontist. If there is a problem contact your Orthodontist or find one in the location where you are to keep you comfortable. Most Orthodontists will see patients away from home on an emergency basis. Remember when you arrive home contact your Orthodontist to have the problem repaired. Have a wonderful and safe summer !

HEALTH

IT'S TIME TO FOCUS ON HEALTH CARE... Not Sick Care

T

here has become an inexhaustible amount of medical technology and natural cures claiming to either get you well or enhance your health in some way. But although billions of dollars are being spent and more and more doctors and specialists are going into practice every year, the amount of illness, depression, disease and the number of people on prescriptions dramatically increase every year. America has become one of the sickest countries in the world. When it comes to health, medical tech-

8

PANACHE VUE’

nology and natural cures obviously are not working out. The failure of our health care system has made alternatives to medicine very popular. Studies done at Harvard show that more visits were made to alternative health care providers during the last several years than were made to medical doctors. The vast majority of these visits were made to chiropractors. Chiropractic schools are beginning to open up at major universities. Today, chiropractic’s scientific and clinical research

has become recognized and published in leading medical and scientific journals. Most professional and Olympic teams now either hire or work with a chiropractor to improve performance, recover from injury, and keep their players healthier. For someone to say they do not believe in chiropractic just shows ignorance of a chiropractor’s training, methodology, research, and proven success rate. Chiropractic is the only health care system designed to maximize the natural strength of the human body and its

ability to heal itself without the use of drugs, “natural cures,” surgery, or medical technology. The spine and nervous system totally control all function and healing in a human body. The reason you can eat, breathe, hear, see, sleep, and walk is because the spine and nervous system transmit the commands from the brain to the body. If you think about it, the body is actually kind of stupid. The body does not know what to do unless it is told what to do. This being the case, the best way to hurt someone is to hurt his or her spine and nervous system. Slips, falls, accidents, childhood mishaps, sports injuries, poor posture, hard work conditions, stress, and even the birth process can cause spinal misalignment that leads to damage or interference within the nervous system. Research has shown that these misalignments are the leading cause of many of the unwanted conditions, illnesses, and diseases people suffer from every day. Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments that do not crack or loosen the spine to relieve tension and pain, as many people may think. Chiropractors gently adjust the spine and posture to correct spinal misalignment and remove any interference to the nervous system to allow patients of all ages to heal and regain normal function and optimum health. While prescriptions and over the

counter medications have become the leading cause of death in America, chiropractic is safe. It is so safe that doctors of chiropractic pay only a fraction of what medical doctors pay for insurance (As little as $900/yr for chiropractors vs. $25,000 – 125,000/yr for medical doctors). There is only one healer. It is not a pill, a shot, a vitamin, an herb, a magnet, a medical technology, or a doctor of any kind. It is the body. Chiropractic does not treat the symptom or the disease. Chiropractic does not cure the disease because this can be done only by the natural intelligence from within. Nature needs no help to get you well or keep you well. It just needs no interference. Chiropractic seeks to remove this interference. Today, more than 6 million chiropractic adjustments are performed on families each week making chiropractic the leading alternative form of health care and the number one profession in the world for restoring well being to mankind. In our offices throughout Tampa Bay, our doctors work together to ensure that all of our patients receive whole health chiropractic care. Regular adjustments are very important to providing your body the ability to function and heal at 100%, but we also focus on whole health roles of nutrition, exercise, avoiding toxins, and maximizing your mental balance. Joe migrated to America from Germany in 1926 and opened a studio in New York City, where he trained a variety of clients including athletes, businessmen, actors, singers and dancers until his death in 1967. Pilates exercise, as Joe designed it, is an exercise system that dramatically transforms the way your body looks and feels by focusing on stretching and building strength with resistance. Pilates exercise is excellent for developing a strong “core” or center of the body, and it develops an evenly conditioned body. It elongates and strengthens muscles creating elasticity and joint mobility. As Pilates has grown in popularity and Pilates instructors abound by the thousands, the actual feeling of a true Pilates session may have been lost. In the Pilates world, to become a Pilates instructor takes a minimum of 480 plus hours of training on all of the Pilates equipment. From the initial 480 hours of training, it literally takes years to become a proficient and experienced Pilates instructor. The best Pilates instructors take hours of continuing education and are always learning and improving their technique. HEALTH

WHAT IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT FOR DIABETES?

O

ne of the most challenging health concerns facing our nation today is diabetes. Diabetes affects about 29.1 million Americans, and an estimated ½ of our adult population is currently diabetic or pre-diabetic. Diabetes and its related conditions have created untold costs for our healthcare system. There are two forms of diabetes, Type I and Type II. Type I, often called juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune condition where the body fights against its own insulin-producing cells. Approximately 1.25 million of the Americans with diabetes have Type I. The larger problem is Type II diabetes, a condition where a person develops insulin resistance by way of ingesting too much sugar. Insulin resistance requires the body to make more insulin, which is a highly inflammatory hormone. More insulin leads to a host of other health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. Type II diabetes is directly tied to weight gain and obesity, due to the cycle of high sugar intake, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations, and new cases of blindness. These statistics paint a rather grim picture; however, there is good news. Type II diabetes is generally a highly reversible condition. What this means is that with proper treatment, a patient may: • Decrease insulin resistance and inflammation • Cut back on or stop medications altogether, including insulin • Lose significant amounts of weight • Dramatically decrease the risk of lifethreatening health conditions • Proper treatment, aside from taking medications your doctor may prescribe

www.PanacheVue.com

César A. Lara, M.D.

(and reviewing those medications periodically), is taken by making significant changes to your diet. Some important steps to take include: • Cut back on sugar intake. Sugars are found in more than just dessert. Avoid refined carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, and rice- and of course the sweets. • Eat whole foods. Many processed foods contain ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, a sweetener that breaks down as a sugar inside your body. Read your nutrition labels to find out what’s really in your food, and eat items as close to their natural state as possible. • Balance your diet. To most effectively treat diabetes, a nutrition plan should be low in carbohydrates and high in protein. Fruits, which naturally contain sugars, should be eaten sparingly, with an emphasis on fruits with a low glycemic index. Lean protein will support a patient’s nutritional needs, as will vegetables, especially leafy greens and lettuces, and healthy fats. Exercise is also an important part of this nutritional equation. Studies have shown that aerobic activity and strength training both have a direct impact in decreasing insulin resistance in diabetics. Exercise is also linked to better follow-through with a specific diet or nutritional plan. For every 2 pounds of excess weight a patient loses, their risk of contracting diabetes goes down by 9%. Once a patient sheds excess weight, he or she can modify the nutritional plan to reflect maintenance instead of weight loss. Using nutrition to treat diabetes is not hypothetical for me; in fact, it is my life’s work. Fifteen years ago, my mother was diagnosed with diabetes. Her doctors prescribed medication and gave her nutri-

tional guidelines to follow. She took her medicine and tried to follow the guidelines, but she continued to gain weight. Her health deteriorated, and within three years she was taking three oral medications multiple times a day, as well as two forms of insulin. Twelve years ago, I was not a weight management specialist. I was a doctor with a thriving practice, and I felt that I was a good doctor. Yet I felt helpless in this situation, unable to treat one of the people closest to me in the world. I didn’t know how to improve my mother’s health, but I resolved to figure it out. My mother’s diabetes was a huge wake-up call for me. It sparked my transition to my current practice of bariatrics, and allowed me to find my personal mission: helping to change people’s lives through modification of their lifestyles. Within a month of starting my new practice, I began treating my mother. I wanted to refocus her treatment and manage the root cause of her problems. We took her off insulin and made changes to her lifestyle instead. Today my mother takes no diabetes medications, and has maintained a 50-pound weight loss for over a decade. My mother’s story is not unique. It can be the story of most individual with diabetes, if they are willing to take steps in their everyday lives toward making a change. César A. ANDREW ASHTON LaPosh Salon

Andrew Ashton LaPosh Salon

Dear Andrew Ashton, I've had the same haircut for what seems like my whole life. It’s long, straight and has never been colored. I don't necessarily want to cut it but I'm so bored with the same look every day. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Katlin Dear Katlin,

Even by not cutting your hair, you have quite a few options for helping with the boredom of your hair. Maybe a color change could be the answer. Changing the color even in a slight way can help give some zip to a new look. There is always styling or pulling it up in different ways to get rid of that boredom also. The beachy wave look is very in style right now. Create the beach wave by curling areas and intertwine with straighter pieces. Just make sure curls are not uniform on the entire style. Other options are different braids and ponytails. Come on in to LaPosh Salon and we would love to show you different style options. Andrew Ashton Dear Andrew Ashton, I have fine, flat and lifeless hair! How do I get volume in my hair? What are some tricks to achieving more volume? Help!! Sarah

Dear Sarah, You are not alone. Creating volume in hair can be challenging for someone with fine hair. Here are a couple ways to get life back in your hair and create volume. Start by using a volume type shampoo like BioMega Volume Shampoo, making sure it is made for color treated hair. Most of these shampoos do not have conditioning additives which can weigh down hair. When you use your conditioner, be sure not to use on the root area of your scalp. Just use on the ends and rinse very well. Next use a root lifting product (rePear Bodifier) and spray or apply directly to the scalp or root area of your hair. Using a round brush to blow dry will help create more volume also. The last thing you can do is use a dry shampoo (Aero Dry Shampoo) and spray throughout the root area. This will help create a bit more texture at your roots and create more volume. Andrew Ashton

10 SECRETS FOR BETTER SUMMER SKIN BY VALERIE KELLEY

A

hhh… summer. Sun, sandals, swimsuits and bare skin. But with double the fun of beach hair and short-shorts comes double the danger — wrinkles, freckles, skin thinning, sunburn, sunspots (also known as age spots), uneven pigmentation, melasma are the aftermath of sun exposure. Ninety-percent of wrinkles are caused by the sun, and while intentional overexposure (tanning, sunbathing) is incredibly harmful, twothirds of all sun damage is, surprisingly, incidental (walking the dog, driving). While it may be impossible to avoid the sun altogether, it is possible to be good to your skin before and long after summer is gone , by scheduling an appointment for a sun-savvy treatment.

FOR THE FACE

Peel Away. Luz Meadows, aesthetician at Lecada Medical Artistry, recommends scheduling a ViPeel in early spring to help correct skin flaws and start summer looking refreshed. "You'll see improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, while it stimulates collagen production for ongoing benefits." She adds, "If you can commit to staying covered up, a chemical peel is another choice for removing existing skin damage, clearing and tightening pores, and slowing oil production." Scrub Often. Taking the time now for regularly scheduled facials and microdermabrasion will keep your skin looking luminous all summer long. "Exfoliating monthly with a light, fruit-fusion peel or microdermabrasion rejuvenates skin, leaving it softer and brighter", says Dana Martinez, owner of Lecada Medical Artistry. "You will find that removing dulling, dead skin cells also helps even-out any discoloration and betters skin tone."

www.PanacheVue.com

Collagen Induction Therapy. Safe for all skin types and ethnicities, CIT is a natural and effective anti-aging treatment, triggering the body's natural response to produce new collagen. Think of CIT like acupuncture, but one used to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. You look radiant after one treatment with final results gradually more visible over months.

FOR THE BODY

Wax On, Wax Off. Let’s not sugarcoat things: Your first bikini wax of the season is a seriously daunting beauty experience. Don’t take any chances. Skip the DIY (and the shaving bumps!) and opt for professional, hygienic, safe and long-lasting results. And schedule your maintenance in advance. Once the weather warms up, the practitioners’ appointment books can become quickly booked! Spray It On. The golden glow of a summer tan without the skin damage?? Absolutely! The spray tan is a great way to get a healthy-looking sun-kissed look without unhealthy skin damage. The trick? Before you spray tan, make sure you use a good body scrub to get rid of dead skin. If you don't exfoliate, you will end up looking speckled. Wrap It Up. Body wraps, which date back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, help relax and rejuvenate the body, tighten and tone the skin, and improve circulation. You emerge from your cocoon revived and refreshed, smoother, firmer, and vividly brighter. Moisturize with SPF. Applying moisturizer with SPF is essential regardless of the season. With the onset of warmer

weather, however, consider switching your current moisturizer for another with higher SPF and lighter formulation to prevent sun spots, freckles, and early signs of aging. Revision Skincare’s Intellishade, an antiaging tinted moisturizer with SPF 45, is a favorite of Modern Family’s Julie Bowen, and the winner of NewBeauty magazine’s Beauty Choice Award. Boost your block with antioxidants. Skincare products containing antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and green tea can help reverse sun damage. Try switching your regular iced tea for iced green tea, and layer on antioxidant rich serums such as Revision Skincare’s Vitamin C and Vitamin K. Go easy on the eyes. The summer elements can be particularly harsh on the fragile skin around the eyes. Sunglasses are chic, but they’re also instrumental in protecting our eyes. Wear them diligently alongside a fast-absorbing, peptide-rich eye cream like Revision Skincare's D-E-J eye cream. Last, but not least, keep hydrated! If you're on the go, try bringing water and fresh fruit to prevent dehydration. Some effort on your part will result in healthy, radiant skin this summer and many summers to come.

The aestheticians at Lecada Medical Artistry can create a specially tailored skincare regimen for you to ensure your skin's optimal health in any season. Lecada is located at 3710 West Azeele Street, Tampa. Call 813-874-2332 to schedule your appointment.

CELEBRATE AND CHERISH MOM!

O

DEBBIE AND LARRY LIEBERMAN

ver the years in our home of 3 active boys my wife, Debbie, kept command central in control by juggling sports, school , social calendars and work. The mantra in our home was “when mamma is happy, everyone is happy”! Today we laugh about it, but moms of today juggle so many family responsibilities and set the tone for the home. Not only do they manage the family lives, they very often put their own needs last making sure everyone else’s needs are met. Many times in our dental office I meet moms who are in desperate need of dental treatment but choose to put their children’s needs first. While this is very important, I would like to

encourage those moms to think about the model they are setting for their children and somehow find a way to take care of themselves too. I celebrate these moms and invite them in to our dental office to be treated and pampered. The experience begins the moment you enter our office. Cool, calming, spa colors, a soothing rock waterfall, a coffee bar (that rivals Starbucks) and a warm, smiling face awaits you at check in. Whether you’ve come for your routine hygiene visit or for other dental treatment, your comfort is our prime concern. Using memory foam chair pads, TV and music headphones, sunglasses and a garden view in each treatment room gives you the feeling you’re not in your typical sterile dental office. For those patients who need a bit more “comfort” in a dental environment we offer several additional options. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available to help relieve dental anxiety. In addition, we are licensed to offer oral and IV sedation, a deeper more relaxing way to get through your dental visit. Very often dental anxiety can be helped simply with calm, soothing music, a dark pair of sunglasses and a caring staff who is attentive to your needs.

Dali Hernandez is the Creative Director and head designer for House of Dali. She is also a Real Estate Agent operating in the Tampa Bay area. Dali’s arrival to the fashion industry has been making numerous headlines; however designing is nothing new for this NY native. She recalls her childhood’s obsession with fashion magazines, and with the help of a pair of scissors, she would cut various designs to mix and match and ultimately transform her bedroom walls into the latest fashion show. The days she went fabric shopping with her mother gave her an early perspective on quality variation and how the same design can be completely altered due to fabric choice. Dali’s fashion line is for the woman who still maintains her social status and is not afraid to make a fashion statement. She feels that there shouldn’t really be a target age or group for her line, because she feels that women are sexy and edgy at any age. Dali was featured on FOX13, What’s Hot Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Pulse, Vocess International, Creative Loafing, tbttimes, St. Pete Times, Panache Vue, Remark Magazine, Libertine Magazine, Envie, and was Semi Finalist for “Fashion Star” NBC. SOFA, COUCH OR DIVAN? BY JOSEPH PUBILLONES

A

designer's lexicon can sometimes seem complicated and pretentious. Words that you thought mean one thing can mean something else altogether. This can be due to the words coming from other languages, or if they are infrequently used words to describe

18

PANACHE VUE’

a piece of furniture of days gone by. Recently the ever-attentive children of a friend asked me point-blank, "Excuse me, what is the difference between couch and sofa?" My immediate answer was that it was the same piece of furniture depending on your level of education. My answer was partially right. Yes, the words are used to refer to the same piece of furniture, but there are some variations. This column is dedicated to them. A couch or a sofa is generally a piece of furniture where two or more people can sit. It can be fully upholstered or partially

upholstered with pieces of wood or metal frame exposed. The major difference is that couches can be used for reclining or laying upon, as the name suggest the word derives from the French word couche meaning "to lie down." A couch would best be used to describe an upholstered piece in a family room. The term sofa used predominantly in England and Ireland denotes a tone of formality, hence a sofa is a more appropriate word for the upholstered piece in the living room. There are many other terms associated with couches, such as sofa divan, canape, settee, chesterfield and davenport. Sofa, for example, is derived from the Arabic word suffa meaning carpet. Divan, from the Middle East, was a long seat formed of a mattress laid against the side of the room, upon the floor or upon a raised structure or frame, with cushions to lean against. The fainting couch, a one-armed long upholstered chair, is a form of a divan. Settee, a word from Old English seti, used to describe a long wooden bench with arms and a high back. The term canape is from 18th century France, used to describe a three seat piece of furniture with a carved wood frame. To describe a sofa as a Chesterfield is a throwback to 19th century England. Chesterfields are a tufted and deep-buttoned style of sofas, sometimes upholstered in leather or fabric. The term is still used in England and Canada, generally by older folks. Finally the least-known word for sofas is davenport. It was originally a Massachusetts brand of upholstered goods. In the 1950s and '60s, davenport was used to describe a futon-style furniture with storage underneath. The most common type of couch is the loveseat. As the name suggests, it has seating for two. Sofa also has the implication of a large piece of furniture with seating for three or more. Sectional sofas, as the name denotes, are composed of sections to allow the homeowner to use as few or as many needed. Sectionals usually also contain a corner seat for a continuous seating. These can be floated in a room to create a more intimate area or against the walls to allow for placement in a dimensionally challenged room.

GREEN LIVING

GLASS COUNTERTOPS, WHY NOT? BY GENE MCDONALD

F

irst of all Glass is a very resistant material. Regardless to what you believe or may have heard, it will resist hard hits. Glass in my opinion will be one of those materials that will be “Around for a lifetime”. When the thickness of the glass exceeds 3/4", it becomes extremely solid. But if you want it even thicker like granite countertops, 1-1/2” thick can be considered a stone. These glass countertops can also be perfect for kosher kitchens as they are non-porous; they have a Wow factor that when accented with lights, switches from wow to sizzling! I know staining is a concern for many other tops, but we know it is almost impossible to stain glass. Organic items used in your home like wine and lemon juice cannot leave their autographs like other popular materials do. I mostly get asked if Glass countertops are tempered. They are not, well at least the ones I work with anyway. I can get tempered glass tops. It’s not so much about the strength of the glass; to me it’s about the concern of breakage. If our standard glass gets bumped on the corner it might chip off and can possibly be repaired with better odds than if you bumped the corner of tempered glass. The tempered glass will turn the whole top or table top into a million little cubes. (Of course if this happens, please bring me the glass, I recycle it). It’s basically up to the customer, I myself do many specialty dining table tops and I suggest support underneath if tempered glass is what you want for your table top. The concern I have is this, if you load up a tempered glass top with heavy items like gravy bowls and Turkey platters and someone accidentally bumps the corner of the ta-

www.PanacheVue.com

AFTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN KANTOR

ble with a skillet, the whole top is coming down. That is why we feel more comfortable with NON-tempered strong glass. I have used quite a bit of another type of Glass for tops called Glass2 which comes in many colors and is also an exciting glass only product, but its created like slump glass or Kiln-fired in which the broken glass accumulated are actually heated just enough to mend them together for outstanding strength. We recently did a Glass2 reception top for a great team who do liposuction, they knew the price was premium compared to what’s popular, but really they made their purchase based on the wow factor, the non-porous surface which in

the medical industry is a must. This facility also is a fan of art and the designer of this project actually wanted to express their business practice through their appearance when you visit. We all know if they would have chosen another material that would not take from their quality service, but it’s the little extra that makes them have an extraordinary facility.

anache: Why did you choose this business or line of work? Angee: I have always had a passion for Modeling! Ever since I was very young and being that I was an awkwardly tall girl with a very different look than what seemed to be the norm for beauty, I wanted to prove that I too could and will be just as successful as all the rest! Panache: What sets you apart from your competition? Angee: I don’t think I’m any different than the other amazing talent in this industry. However I do feel that we all bring something to the table that makes us, “US.” Panache: What do you do for fun?

Here's to the crazy ones: The misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignoring them because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

Angee: Spending quality time with my daughter, she is my everything! Panache: Who or what is most important to you, personally or professionally? Angee: Personally: My family. They support me in every adventure and love me unconditionally. Professionally: achieving my goals, striving to always do better in an industry that I truly love. Panache: When you were five, what was your dream to be when you grew up?

Angee: I could say Astronaut, Lawyer, sell Lemonade on the Beaches of some tropical island somewhere but to be honest all I wanted was to just be “HAPPY”, and so far I’ve achieved that dream. FISHING

INSHORE FISHING BONANZA BY CAPTAIN STEWART AMES

A

s spring turns to summer, fishing opportunities abound in the Tamps Bay Area. Large seatrout, that wintered up in the Intercoastal Waterway, head out to the beaches, where they congregate in good numbers. These fish may average near 20 inches and limit catches are a realistic expectation. Free lined whitebaits are readily accepted by these fish. Their abundance and willingness to eat make them a common target for near shore anglers. Often located in the same areas, larger snook have now made their way to locations adjacent to major passes in anticipation of the summer spawn. These fish prefer live offerings such as whitebaits, ladyfish, grass grunts and threadfin herring. With crystal clear water conditions, snook are easily seen as they tend to be

www.PanacheVue.com

in fairly shallow water and congregate in groups. Catching them is a different story however. Dozens of presentations will result in no bites and then, as if a switch were thrown, several fish are hooked on consecutive casts. Then, just as quickly as it began, the feeding period is over. Fishing is generally productive during strong tidal movement or low light periods and is best when these two things coincide. From a sport fishing standpoint, snook are sought by many anglers due to their size, speed and over all fighting ability. During May and June, the largest near shore game fish, the tarpon, will be seen rolling immediately off of Pinellas County Beaches. Early mornings are a great time to chase these fish due to

calmer waters and limited boat traffic although tarpon can be caught throughout the day. Methods used range from fly fishing to live baiting with crabs or threadfin herring. Tarpon have established travel routes and guides will position themselves along these “highways” in the hopes of putting a hook in one. Often exceeding 100 pounds, these large fish require stout tackle and reels with good line capacity as an initial run can exceed several hundred yards. Last but not least is the dependable redfish. Fairly abundant and strong, redfish are a staple for all inshore guides in the area. Shrimp and pinfish are two of the most popular baits, but the reality is that there are few meals a redfish will refuse. A wide variety of cut baits can also be highly effective; pinfish, mullet, ladyfish all represent excellent choices. Many guides will fish the higher phases of the tide and will focus on structures such as potholes in grass flats, mangrove shorelines and oyster bars. On a good day, a larger school of fish will be located and many fish can be landed. Should you wish to get out on the water, simply contact Captain Stewart Ames at (727) 421-5291. Good luck and good fishing.

SEVEN SIGNS OF SPRING SHARON MOSLEY

L

et the vibes from the Age of Aquarius be your guide when you shop for your spring wardrobe this year. There's a retro inspiration to the clothes you'll see all reinvented this spring

26

PANACHE VUE’

for a whole new generation -- and maybe even for a few of us who lived through it all. Here are seven signs that you're on the right path: Let it flare. The legs have it this season. Whether it's cropped culottes, washed jeans, flared jumpsuits or high-waisted trousers, the wide-leg pants are striding into the 70s spotlight. They're perfect to wear with all the chunky platforms. Think a little "Saturday Night Fever" and "Danc-

ing in the Moonlight. Go boho with tunics. Whether they've got lots of flower power or embroidered and crocheted with Moroccan designs, the "peasant" tops are once again proving that this is the top to top it all off this spring and summer. Wear them in a gauzy explosion of color in loose flowing cotton, or make them work for you at work when they are more like longer shirts, all tailored and belted. Skirt the issue. The wrap skirt was a 70s fashion hit, thanks to designer diva Diane Von Furstenberg, and it's once again twirling around in trendy circles. But skirts this season are also going long and longer. From midi to maxis, there really is something for everyone -- unless, of course, you are a Katherine Hepburn, who loved wearing her beloved pants! Swing in the trenches. OK, so the trench coat didn't exactly originate in the 70s, but in new loose and swingy shapes and lightweight colorful suede, it's the perfect coat/jacket for chilly spring days and nights. Worn over cropped pants and platform shoes, it's a great segue way into warmer weather. Print it. Nothing says 70s like giant paisleys, graphic flowers, sweet ginghams and abstract blocks of color, and, of course, psychedelic rainbow watercolors, patchwork and tie-dyes. What a way to wake up your wardrobe! Add at least one of these new prints to your wardrobe this season and see how much you want to sing. Come on, get hippie! The wedge platform. Yes, there are lots of names for the footwear that is strutting its stuff down the runway this spring -- call them clogs, mules, wedges or platforms -- they come in all heights and in all kinds of designs. From the tall and sublime to the flat and fabulous (that is, comfy Dr. Scholl's style), these shoes are typical of the 70s, when the wooden heel ruled. The fringed handbag. Another classic from the decade when fringe was flying on everything. Whether it's a hobo satchel or a cross-body leather bag, a handbag trimmed with this bohemian detail will instantly update your wardrobe. And yes, you too can get hippie, even if you're on the fringe of this fashion trend.

AVOCADO IN MODERATION BY CHARLYN FARGO

L

ike many foods, avocadoes have their pros and cons -- they're high in calories and high in fat, but it's a good fat. So should you shy away from them because of the fat and calories, or include them in your diet? The humble avocado is nutrient dense. Nutrient-dense foods provide substantial servings of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in proportion to the number of calories they contain. Although avocados are high in fat, most of that fat is hearthealthy monounsaturated fat. Avocados are loaded with dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, and folate, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They're also cholesterol- and

28

PANACHE VUE’

sodium-free. One avocado contains about 700 milligrams of potassium. In fact, avocados have more potassium gram for gram than bananas. And avocados are loaded with the phytochemicals that are thought to reduce the risk of some types of cancers and other chronic diseases.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CALORIES?

The calories in an avocado are hefty -- two tablespoons of mashed avocado (that's 1/5 of the whole thing or about 1 ounce) provide about 55 calories. So, if you eat a whole avocado, then you're getting about 275 calories. That's a lot of calories, especially if you're on a calorie-restricted diet. However, the key word for avocadoes and everything else we consume, is moderation. A little avocado can add some real nutrition and variety to a meal. Plus, sometimes avocado can offer a nutrientrich alternative to another less-healthful fat. You can use avocado as an alternative to mayonnaise or butter by spreading

2 tablespoons of avocado on a sandwich. This will save you almost 40 calories. You still get the fat, but it's definitely a better-for-you fat than those other spreads. And you really can't beat the flavor avocadoes offer. So go ahead, include an avocado in your mix of foods -- just don't go overboard. When buying avocados, pick fruits that have firm skins, but which yield to gentle pressure and have no soft spots. These are the kind of fruits that will ripen after they're picked. Put unripe avocados in a paper bag at room temperature and they will ripen in the next 2-5 days. If you want them to ripen more quickly, add a ripe banana or apple to the bag. These fruits give off a natural ethylene gas that helps to ripen the avocados. Once they're ripe, use them right away. You can also put them in the refrigerator, where they will last for a couple days.

Q AND A

Q: How fast do I need to walk for it to count toward the recommended 30 min-

utes of moderate activity daily? A: You can find reputable sources with lists of activities that identify your activity's intensity -- labeled as light, moderate or vigorous. For example, walking as moderate activity typically refers to "brisk walking" at a pace of three-and-a-half miles per hour, whereas very fast walking (at fourand-a-half miles per hour) or jogging (five miles per hour) is classified as vigorous activity. But these categories don't necessarily work for everyone. One easy way to estimate your activity intensity is to tune in to how you are feeling. Based on a 10-point scale, where sitting is 0 and working as hard as you can is 10, moderate aerobic activity is a 5 or 6. Moderate activity means you breathe a little harder, and although you can talk, you can't comfortably sing a song. In contrast, vigorous activity is a 7 or 8 on this scale, with heart rate substantially increased and breathing hard enough that you can't say more than a few words without stopping to catch your breath. For researchers, moderate activ-

www.PanacheVue.com

ity is activity during which heart rate is at 50 to 70 percent of estimated maximum heart rate, whereas activity is vigorous if heart rate goes up to 70 to 85 percent of estimated maximum. Keep in mind the heart rate that represents "moderate" activity varies among individuals, and the walking pace that brings someone to that heart rate will vary, too. For example, someone who has been inactive or who is recovering from illness or surgery might find activity "moderate" in intensity when walking at a pace slower than expected based on a standard formula. Likewise, someone who is very fit might walk at a pace rapid enough that would be vigorous for some people, but with a small enough increase in heart rate that it's moderate exercise for him or her. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moderate activity that you do in blocks of 10 minutes or more counts toward the goal of at least 30 minutes a day; if you can total 60 minutes, that's even better. Institute for Cancer Research.

WOMEN WHO WORRY THEY ARE MISSING OUT BY TOM MARGENAU

E

very single day, I get emails from women wondering if they are missing out on some kind of Social Security benefits. These are almost always women in their late 60s or even in their 70s and 80s. They are either getting their own Social Security retirement benefits and wonder if they should be getting more money from their husband's Social Security account. Or they are already getting benefits from their spouse, but wonder if they might be due higher benefits from an ex-husband's record. I've learned from their emails that their anxiety and confusion stems from one of three sources. The most common is a neighbor or friend, usually a self-proclaimed Social Security expert, who tells them that they should be getting more money each month from the government. The second misleading source is the Internet. And I don't think I need to remind too many of my readers that the Internet is usually not the most reliable source of information about Social Security benefits. And sadly, the third source of many readers confusion is me! Usually it is because they have read something I wrote about various forms of spousal benefits, but they have missed a key eligibility factor. Here is a typical example. Reader's email: "I am 72 years old and my husband is 75. He gets $1,500 per month and I get only $525. Your recent column said that a woman gets half of her husband's Social Security. Why am I getting so little? My response: "In that recent column, I said that a woman get can up to 50 percent of her husband's Social Security benefit IF she waited until 66 to claim those benefits. You must have taken benefits at around age 62 because you're getting about a third of his, which is the proper payment amount for someone in your situation." So let me spend the rest of this col-

30

PANACHE VUE’

umn clarifying some points about what a woman is due from Social Security. I must start with this point: It is highly likely that you are getting all the Social Security benefits you are due. The Social Security Administration is very good at identifying potential eligibility for various Social Security benefits. And their computers are programmed to catch possible entitlement issues on other accounts. In other words, if you file for your own retirement benefits and have a husband already getting Social Security, agency computers will cross reference those accounts to determine if you are due anything from another record. As a general rule, if a woman has worked and earned her own Social Security retirement, she will be paid that benefit first. After she gets that, the Social Security Administration will look at her husband's record to see if she can get any extra benefits off of his account. How much she can get from his record depends on her age. The most she can get (assuming her husband is still alive) is half. She would get that if she waits until age 66 to file for benefits. But she does not get a full spousal benefit added on top of her own. She just gets supplemented up to his rate. Here is a quick example: Mary files for Social Security at age 62. Her full (age-66) retirement rate is $800 and her reduced age 62 rate is $600. Her husband John is 67-years-old and is getting $2,200 per month. Because she is 62, Mary's spousal rate is about one third of Bill's benefit -- or $733. Mary will get her own $600 retirement benefit, and get an extra $133 in wife's benefits, for a total of $733. Actually, the more common situation is that a working woman won't get anything from her husband's Social Security account -- at least while he is alive. And that's because her own retirement benefit usually exceeds the small percentage she

is due from her husband. And now, let's talk about widow's benefits. A woman who is over age 66 when her husband dies will generally start getting 100 percent of her husband's month of death benefit. Or her own retirement benefit will be supplemented up to that level. Here is a quick example. Jerry was getting $2,100 per month when he died. His wife, Carole, was getting her own Social Security retirement benefit of $1,700. Carole will keep getting that $1,700 check, but she will also start getting $400 in widow's benefits to take her total income up to $2,100. Widows can get benefits as early as age 60. At that age, she gets 70 percent of her husband's Social Security benefit. Women under age 60 would qualify for widow's benefits only if they are caring for a deceased husband's minor children. Also, in rare cases, a disabled widow with no minor children can get benefits as early as age 50. Widows have one major advantage other Social Security beneficiaries do not have. They can take reduced benefits on one record and later switch to full benefits on another record. For example, a woman whose husband has died could take reduced widow's benefits at age 60, and switch to full benefits on her own retirement account at 66, or even higher benefits if she waits until age 70. And finally, there is the whole issue of benefits for divorced women. In most cases, a divorced woman can get the same benefits as a currently married woman. As a general rule, she would get benefits from an ex-husband's record IF: 1) She was married to her ex for at least 10 years; 2) she is not currently married to someone else; 3) she is at least 62-years-old and her husband is at least 62-years-old; and 4) she is not due higher benefits on her own Social Security record. A divorced woman whose ex has died would have to meet the same eligibility requirements, and would get the same widow's benefits, as a widow who was married to her husband at the time of death. One final note: A woman who is potentially due Social Security from two (or more) ex-husbands doesn't get benefits from all of them. She will only get benefits from the account that pays the highest rate.

pair of Spanx running shorts, a chest-crushing Under Armour workout shirt or similar compression-type synthetic clothing can help smooth out unsightly lumps and bumps, making the wearer look more shipshape. But wear such clothing too long and there are health risks. And they're not related to what happens when you finally free your body from confinement. Experts say so-called shapewear worn for extended periods of time can cause a host of physical issues, from painful burning and tingling in the thighs caused by too-tight pants squeezing nerves that run through the groin to indigestion to irritable bowel syndrome to urinary incontinence. Some compression-type clothing is useful, such as socks worn during long airplane flights to promote circulation through the legs and after hard workouts, when they may provide some support for recovering muscles. But most experts say the real solution is not what you wear but what you do; a little body-shaping behavior (exercise) goes a lot further than Lululemon tights. BODY OF KNOWLEDGE Jamaican sprinter and Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt has run races in which he has exceeded 30 miles per hour (for stretches far shorter than that). That's fast, but five other members of the animal kingdom can run faster over the same distance: the North African ostrich (max speed: 40 mph), the greyhound (43 mph), a thoroughbred racehorse (55 mph), the pronghorn (55 mph) and the cheetah (61 mph). CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY? YES YOU CAN! BY MARILYNN PRESTON

D

r. Amit Sood -- professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine -- grew up and went to medical school in Bhopal, India. Throughout his medical training, he writes, he experienced "the scourge of poverty, malnutrition and disease" that created tremendous suffering in his country. In 1995, Sood came to America. He did a two-year residency in New York, followed by six years in rural Washington, all the while practicing a different

32

PANACHE VUE’

kind of medicine than he had in India. In America, his patients were, on the whole, healthier, wealthier, better nourished, with many more resources. Here's the shocker. "To my surprise," he writes, "the suffering was the same. It's nature, intensity, pervasiveness ... I had naively assumed that everyone [in America] would be happy and having a good time. The extent of stress made no sense to me." And that led Sood to his lifelong quest to understand the scientific basis of human suffering, and to come up with practical things that ordinary humans can to do to live extraordinary lives of peace and calm, with better relationships, and greater happiness. He describes his methods and philosophy in his playful and profound new book called "The Mayo Clinic Handbook for Happiness." (Da Capo Press). It features detailed, step-by-step practices to

help you decrease negative stress and intentionally choose happiness. "Happiness is a habit," says Sood, now chair of the Mayo Mind Body Initiative and director of research at the Mayo Clinic Complementary and Integrative Medicine program. (Just knowing this place exists makes me happy.) "Some of us are born with it; others have to choose it. This book will help readers 'choose' happiness." HIS BIG DISCOVERY: IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT. "After years of studying and learning from patients, students, spiritual luminaries, scientists and philosophers," Sood writes, "I realized that human suffering is often not caused by our conscious thoughts and actions." Our minds are hard-wired to attach to the negative, to see the world as a dark and threatening place because that gave us a survival advantage in days gone-by. These days, that evolutionary tendency

keeps many of us stressed and anxious. "The brain and mind work very hard to keep us dissatisfied and stressed," he writes, and that pretty much bypasses any hope for happiness, unless we intentionally redirect its focus. "Our suffering is nobody's fault," writes Sood. "We can all do something about it." Sood prescribes a four-step, 10-week program in the "Handbook for Happiness": 1) TRAIN YOUR ATTENTION. Neuroscientists have proven that the human mind is instinctively restless and wandering. That's the default mode, and to counteract it, you want to develop deep and sustained attention -- intentional attention -- so that you can command your thoughts, shift your perspective, detach from the negative and embrace the positive. Joyful attention practices include waking up with gratitude, being in nature, resisting judg-

ment and expressing kindness. "Your attention is like a muscle," he writes, "Training makes it stronger." 2) CULTIVATE EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE. Emotional resilience is crucial to happiness, Sood says, because it helps you focus on positive actions and uplifting emotions. He asks his happiness seekers to actively pursue five principles: gratitude, compassion, acceptance, meaning and forgiveness. "When things go wrong," he advises, "try to focus on what went right within what went wrong." 3) START A MIND-BODY PRACTICE. Sood encourages people to develop a relaxed mind, using a wide range of activities including reading, exercise, music, art, prayer, meditation, yoga and deep breathing. "A relaxed mind is a humble mind that isn't struggling with fear, greed or selfishness." 4) PICK HEALTHY HABITS. Decrease your dose of daily news. Get up

and get moving. Simplify your life. Pick your battles. Lighten up. "We often take life more seriously that we need to. Humor brings you into intentional presence." You can read more about Sood's SMART program (Stress Management and Resiliency Training) on his website, www.stressfree.org. He developed it after 20 years of research and practice, and it's been used to train 150,000 people at Mayo with "consistently positive" results. Now, according to his website, Sood intends to set up franchises in cities throughout the country, teaching people how to choose happiness, and improve their health. How SMART is that? ENERGY EXPRESS-O! EVERYONE WANTS TO BE HAPPY "Understanding the scientific basis of human suffering and its solutions for the modern world became my daily obsession." -- Dr. Amit Sood

CAROTENOIDS AND CANCER BY CHARLYN FARGO

C

arotenoids -- found in foods like tomatoes, kale, spinach and carrots -- may play a role in reducing the risk of breast cancer, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study spanned 20 years and adds to a growing body of research on carotenoids, diet and breast cancer risk. Carotenoids are a large group of phytochemicals found in many red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables. Betacarotene and lycopene, found in carrots and tomatoes, are a couple of the more well-known carotenoids. They're also in dark green vegetables, such as kale and spinach. Previous studies on carotenoids and breast cancer have been mixed. This study builds on research by the same group suggesting that carotenoids affect different types of breast tumors.

34

PANACHE VUE’

As in their previous study, the researchers used blood levels of carotenoids to measure intake. Back in 1989-90, they collected blood samples from almost 33,000 women who were part of the Nurses' Health Study. Ten years later they collected another sample, with slightly less than half of the women participating again. All the women were regularly answering questionnaires about their health, weight, diet and other factors. By 2010, 20 years after the first blood collection, 2,188 of the women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. These women were matched against women from the same group who did not get cancer. If a woman who developed breast cancer gave one blood sample, she was matched against a woman without cancer of similar age who also gave one blood sample. When the groups of women were compared to one another, the study found that women with the highest amount of carotenoids in their blood had 18 to 28 percent lower risk of breast cancer compared to those with the lowest carotenoid levels. This link was also found for specific carotenoids, such as beta carotene, alphacarotene and lycopene. Risks were similar

for ER-positive and ER-negative cancers. Higher blood levels of carotenoids were even more strongly linked to lower risk of breast cancer that recurred. Researchers believe that carotenoids may particularly lower risk for the more aggressive and lethal breast tumors. It's possible, the authors note, that this link may relate to other phytochemicals in fruit and vegetables or an interaction of carotenoids with these phytochemicals. Q AND A

Q: What is the recommended amount of fish I should be eating? Does it all have to be salmon for the omega-3 fatty acids? A: Eight ounces of fish and seafood per week (for example, two four-ounce servings) is enough to provide an average of about 250 milligrams (mg) of heart-healthy EPA plus DHA (the major omega-3 fatty acids from seafood). This amount of fish with omega 3s is enough to reduce heart attacks and deaths from heart disease. That's aiming for one serving a week from choices high in omega-3s. One fish high in omega 3s is

salmon (fresh, frozen or canned). However, world supply of wild salmon is not enough to support major increases in consumption. Other choices that are ecofriendly and high in omega-3 fat include Atlantic mackerel; sablefish (also called black cod); Arctic char; sardines; herring; mussels; oysters; most barramundi, lake or rainbow trout; and U.S. or Canadian white (albacore) tuna. More information about making choices that support both health and the environment is provided by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Seafood Health Facts, an initiative developed jointly by several major universities. Low-fat choices like cod, haddock and catfish are excellent sources of protein, selenium and other nutrients, but if you eat only seafood choices like these, you are unlikely to reach the recommended target of EPA plus DHA fat. If your physician advises that you should be consuming higher amounts -- 500 mg or more -- of omega 3s, then focus choices on the high omega-3 fish, increase amount of fish, or discuss adding supplemental EPA + DHA. RECIPE

Here's an easy, grab-and-go breakfast recipe from Eating Well magazine. White whole-wheat flour adds a boost of fiber and less butter gives them flavor and texture without going overboard on calories.

MORNING GLORY SCONES

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus 2 tablespoons, divided • 1 1/4 cups white whole-wheat flour • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 cup sugar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 5 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 1/2 cup shredded carrot • 1/2 cup raisins • 1/3 cup chopped toasted pecans • 1/3 cup shredded sweetened coconut • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 cup reduced-fat milk or buttermilk • 1 large egg

SWEET SCONE GLAZE (OPTIONAL)

Preheat oven to 400F. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Whisk 1 1/2 cups

all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Using a pastry blender, cut butter into the dry ingredients. Stir in carrot, raisins, pecans, coconut and cinnamon. Whisk milk (or buttermilk) and egg in a medium bowl; stir into the dry ingredients until just combined. Sprinkle a work surface with 1 tablespoon flour. Turn the dough out and sprinkle the top with the remaining 1 tablespoon flour. Knead three to five times, or until the dough just comes together. Divide in half and pat each piece into a 5-inch circle. Cut each circle into 6 wedges and transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Bake the scones until firm to the touch, 18 to 24 minutes. Glaze, if desired. Makes 12 servings. Note: to make glaze, whisk 3/4 cup lightly packed confectioners' sugar and 2 tablespoons and 2 tablespoons lemon juice (or milk) in a small bowl until smooth. Adjust consistency with a little more sugar or liquid as desired. Drizzle over warm scones. Makes about 1/3 cup (enough to coat 12 scones with 1 teaspoon glaze each). Per serving: 233 calories; 5 g protein, 35 g carbohydrate, 9 g fat; 30 mg cholesterol; 3 g fiber; 287 mg sodium.

HEALTH & FITNESS

WATER FITNESS

BENEFITS

T

he unique properties of water combine to offer one of the most effective environments for an exercise program. Water fitness is the great equalizer – participants of a wide range of skill and fitness levels can enjoy this low-impact, total body conditioning workout. With the addition of high-quality equipment, the benefits of a water workout are endless.

GETTING FIT: TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING

• Studies have shown convincingly that water workouts decrease body fat as effectively as land-based exercise programs. • Without performing a single sit-up, a water workout tones and strengthens the abdominals as a result of maintaining a vertical posture against the water’s resistance.

36

PANACHE VUE’

• Water offers a three-in-one workout for cardiovascular and muscular conditioning and enhanced flexibility. This timeefficient, total body conditioning workout results in increased strength and endurance, and improved biomechanics and balance. • Low-impact aquatic workouts can prevent the injury, strain and re-injury common to many land-based exercise. Water supports 90 percent of the body’s weight – resulting in reduced stress on joints, muscles, tendon and ligaments. • Water is a natural and instantly adjustable weight-training machine. Resistance is approximately four to 42 times greater in water than air. A workout can be as vigorous or light as desired by effectively utilizing the water’s resistance. • Unlike most land activities, water provides resistance in all directions, so both sides of the muscle pair can be strength-

ened simultaneously. For example, an arm curl works both biceps and triceps, since there is resistance to the movement in both directions. • An upright water workout can be more effective than swimming, because the body’s vertical position increases resistance 75 percent over swimming laps. Water Fitness Benefits -- 2

FEELING GOOD: FITNESS FOR A LIFETIME

• A regular water fitness program can result in the permanent reduction of blood pressure. Water’s hydrostatic pressure helps the heart circulate blood, which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise versus similar exertions on land. • Practical daily movements such as walking, lifting and reaching can be incorpo-

• Buoyancy equipment, such as the patented AquaJogger® belt, suspend the body securely and comfortably, supporting the head and neck out of the water, so hair stays dry and glasses can be worn. Water Fitness Benefits -- 3 • Especially beneficial to individuals with disabilities is the fact that water workouts offer a greater range of motion and freedom of movement than many land-based exercise.

rated into a water fitness workout to enhance functionality. This can result in the ability to enjoy and perform the activities of daily life with greater energy and ease. A water workout can be a social activity just like fitness walking or riding side-byside stationary bikes. With access to an indoor pool, water exercise becomes a great year-round activity, as well as a safe workout option during inclement weather. It can also be an affordable alternative to at-home workouts which often involve more expensive equipment. Water exercise is both exhilarating and therapeutic – reducing stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure and muscle spasms. The water’s full body massage action provides a vigorous yet deeply relaxing workout that is usually pain free. Water exercise involves all muscle groups, yet virtually eliminates muscle soreness – leaving the muscles relaxed instead of

tight and sore.

WATER WALKING: NO SWIM SKILLS REQUIRED

• Water walking and running movements are simple to learn and require no swim skills, making deep water workouts accessible to virtually everyone – from those just beginning a workout program to those looking for a great cross-training option. • Whether in peak condition or recovering from surgery, the water’s forgiving environment supports and offers a light or challenging workout according to the person’s need – for both fragile physical therapy clients and intense athletes. • The water’s buoyancy helps even the uncoordinated land exerciser achieve a measure of grace with movements that are easy to learn. The fact that water obscures less than stellar bodies also makes this exercise appealing to the self-conscious.

• Water exercise demands the continual use of the abdominal and back muscles as well as the arms and legs in order to maintain erect body alignment and balance. This strengthening of the core abdominals and back can assist in managing and preventing back pain. • Water exercise enables a person to preserve as much fitness and function as possible while rehabilitating an injury. Many people heal to over 100 percent of preinjury strength and may actually improve their fitness level. Some individuals who have committed to aquatic therapy found their recovery time is reduced by half. • Heat is lost 25 times faster in water than air, allowing for longer and more comfortable workouts. This natural cooling of the body is particularly beneficial for people who tend to overheat during exercise, and in conditions such as pregnancy or multiple sclerosis, where maintaining a lower core body temperature is very important. • The water’s pressure helps the heart circulate blood which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise. As a result of this hydrostatic pressure, water exercise may be one of the best and safest activities for cardiac patients. It also helps reduce swelling, allowing many people with arthritis or injuries to exercise. n To find a retailer near you visit www.AquaJogger.com or call 1-800-922-9544. A SPECIAL FIRST TRIP TO ENGLAND BY GLENDA WINDERS

T

he reason for the trip was a sad one. My friend Marcia Kirby and her husband were in the process of planning a trip to England when he became ill and passed away. His wish had been for her to go anyway, but she didn't want to make the journey alone. Her email said she'd trade me a ticket to London for my services as a tour guide. It only took me a few seconds to type "Yes!" and push send, but after the initial excitement, I realized that I had a big job ahead of me. I'd traveled to England several times and lived there briefly, but with so much to see and do, how could I choose what to cram into just a couple of weeks? Here's how we figured it out. One of the best decisions we made was to rent a flat in London. Other friends

38

PANACHE VUE’

had told me what fun it was to leave the "tourist" stereotype behind and live like the locals, and with a little online research I learned that the price compared favorably with even budget hotels. Our twobedroom apartment was in the upscale Kensington neighborhood and came with a little balcony from which we could see a sliver of Hyde Park. When we had finished sightseeing for the day, we often stopped at the Marks and Spencer food shop next to our tube station for salad and bread, cereal and fruit, thus saving money by avoiding pricey restaurants and enabling us to eat breakfast and some dinners in. The next thing we did was to compile a master list of things she wanted to do, things I wanted to do and things I thought would be important to round out her experience. We also made a pact to communicate honestly with one another so that neither of us wound up doing something in which we had no interest just to be polite. Another good call was to each purchase an Oyster card. This is a refillable pass that speeds up traveling by underground, bus and some boats. We bought ours there, but we could have purchased

them online before leaving the United States. Some attractions, of course, must be seen on a first visit, no matter how "touristy," and the two that top most people's lists are the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. We delighted in the Beefeater's narration of our tour at the tower and walked past the palace but skipped the changing of the guard ceremony since my experience had been that the exercise was somewhat overrated. Instead we took a boat to the Greenwich Observatory so we could stand on both sides of the international date line and toured Shakespeare's Globe Theater, where they let us sit in on a rehearsal of "Antony and Cleopatra." We rode the London Eye and went up into the Shard, an 87-story skyscraper, both of which provided panoramic views of the city. At the British Museum we took a guided tour of the Enlightenment Room to learn how and why this venerable institution came to be before heading to other exhibits of artifacts from Britain's history. And of course we stopped in at Harrods, where there is a whole department full of trademarked souvenirs to bring home.

Since some of the places we wanted to visit were outside of the city, we went online to book coach tours that left from a depot near Victoria Station. In this way we were able to see Leeds Castle, Canterbury and the white cliffs of Dover one day and Stonehenge and the Roman ruins at Bath another. A third such trip took us to Oxford and through the Cotswolds to Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon. That trip also took us to Warwick Castle, which turned out to be one of the high points of our visit. The castle has played an important part in England's history right back to 1068, when it was built by order of William the Conqueror as a way to establish a presence in that part of the country. It was home until 1978 to the Earls of Warwick but was then sold to become a visitor attraction. There is much to explore here, including extensive grounds, a great hall filled with armaments and a dungeon. But what we liked about it most was that the rooms are now outfitted with Madame Tussauds wax figures to show how the castle was actually used -- from a weekend house party upstairs to the maids weaving cloth and men polishing weapons downstairs. Marcia's special interests were cathe-

www.PanacheVue.com

drals and gardens; mine were the arts and history. One Sunday morning she went to services at St. Martin in the Field while I browsed at the National Gallery next door, but we usually found there was something for both of us at the places we went. Take for example Kensington Palace and Gardens, currently one of the homes of Prince William and his family, where gowns worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret and Princess Diana are on display. It was here we happened on the tip about buying a year's membership to Historic Royal Palaces, which gave us free admission to other places we wanted to see. Kew Gardens contained breathtaking blossoms, trees and ornamental structures on acres of lawn. Here also was Kew Palace, which was one of the homes of King George III, who ruled during the American Revolution. Queen Victoria later gave the home as a gift to the country to mark her golden jubilee in 1887. Hampton Court Palace, the home Henry VIII prepared for Anne Boleyn, was another such palace-garden combination. Anne was executed before she could move in, but her husband lived here with the rest of his wives. The tube doesn't go this far out of the city, so we took a train

one way and a slow, lazy commuter boat back later in the afternoon -- which turned out to be one of our best memories. In fact, many of the memories we cherish most came from immersing ourselves in the daily life of London. We saw a play in the West End theater district, had a proper English tea in the cafe at Westminster Abbey and attended evensong at St. Paul's cathedral, where Marcia actually got to sit in the choir stalls and sing. We ate a traditional roast beef pub lunch on Sunday, and once a week, like everyone else in London, we set our trash and recycling out by the "kerb."

WHEN YOU GO

Many companies such as Vacation Rental by Owner and Airbnb rent flats, but we took the suggestion of a friend and used Coultens: www.coultens.com. The line we used for our days out of London was Evan Evans, which provided comfortable coaches and knowledgeable guides: www.evanevanstours.com. For information about all of the places we went, the best place to start is www.visitbritain.com. This is also where you can purchase an Oyster Card before you travel.
