e currently have SICK CARE, not HEALTH CARE Last year Americans spent $2.8 trillion on healthcare. That is around $8,000 per person. So does this mean that we are all healthy and living well? Absolutely NOT! In fact, we lead the world in heart disease, obesity, and cancer. Astonishingly, 5 out of 6 Americans will be diagnosed with either heart disease or cancer. In a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, of 37 different developed countries the United States ranked 37th (dead last) in terms of overall health of the population. What do we do when that medication has a side effect or no longer works? We go back and get more medications for the next side effect. Americans take up 5% of the world’s population, yet we consume 85% of the world’s medications. You would think that if drugs make you healthy then we would be the healthiest nation, and that is far from the truth. We had 1.1 million people die last year because of drugs and these are not street drugs like heroin or other illegal drugs. --Top Number One: The off-theshoulder top. It's the biggest style statement of the season. Shoulders are the new erogenous zone, and these tops are the perfect way to show off a little skin in the summer months. The off-the-shoulder top is also a great backdrop for statement necklaces and shoulder-duster earrings. --Top Number Two: The striped knit tee. Stripes are another hit of the year. The nautical-inspired top, now a classic, makes a bigger splash this year in bold, colorful stripes. The more graphic, the better. --Top Number Three: The high-low tunic. The hemline of the season has been translated into tops that are not only

flattering for most of us, but provide an elegant update to this traditional fingertip length top. Collect these tunics in an array of colors and pair them with everything from skinny capris to wide-leg palazzo pants. --Top Number Four: The sheer layered tank. Tanks are always summer favorites, especially in light and airy fabrics. Closely akin to the off-theshoulder top, the peasant top is making a comeback with '60s flair embellished with decorative embroidery that gives an extra style twist to this top. --Top Number Six: The silk kimono. A close style cousin to the pajama top, the wide sleeves of this breezy topper lend a touch of ultimate sophistication to summer separates layered underneath. As easy as throwing on a robe, the newest kimono jackets are popping up in everything from tropical prints to digitalized stripes. --Top Number Seven: The floral print shirt. Think Western shirt meets buttonup preppy, and then throw in some feminine chic floral prints and patchwork patterns and you've got summer style creed that will ride high right into fall. --Top Number Eight: The denim jacket. The denim jacket is another fashion favorite, but when worn over a summery sheath dress or a pair of silky pajama pants, it becomes a versatile piece that can easily update anything in your wardrobe. --Top Number Nine: The soft blazer. This is a summer staple when the office beckons and it's hot and humid outside, but cool indoors. A

nyone on a journey toward their healthy weight quickly learns that there are challenges and obstacles strewn along the path. My weight management patients often find that is it hardest to make healthy choices in social situations. On one hand, our innately human desire to band together and spend time in groups is a vital part of individual health. In many cultures, sharing a meal together and nourishing one another is a beautiful occasion for celebration. On the other hand, most of my patients are not coming to me with concerns about a meal they lovingly cooked and prepared with their extended family. They struggle with the less meaningful, more frequent social situations to which food, specifically junk food, has become inextricably linked. In these circumstances, we often feel pressure to eat the same way everybody else is eating. We may feel the need to be a polite guest, and not make anyone go out of their way by preparing special food. We may not want to call attention to ourselves, for fear of being criticized or thought of as “picky eaters.” We may feel like the event isn’t any fun without the conventional food and drink. We may even feel direct peer pressure from those around us, encouraging us to “join in,” “relax,” or “have just one more.” Have you ever found yourself in one of the following difficult situations? 1. A birthday party where everyone is expected to eat cake and ice cream. 2. Watching a football game on TV while the host serves beer, pizza, and wings. 3. A cocktail reception where snacks are

continually passed and your glass is always refilled. 4. A get together with a friend who always wants to meet for happy hour. The truth is, watching a football game or attending a birthday party does not inherently require you to eat and drink a certain way. The idea that a football game needs beer is one of many conventions that our society has made habit. All too often we have the next glass of wine or the piece of cake without ever considering, “Do I want to be eating this right now?” Reaching your healthy weight can present significant physiological challenges, but we must acknowledge and address that there are psychological challenges involved as well. What is it we’re truly craving when we gather together? What actually provides us nourishment and refreshment during these interactions? I believe it’s the opportunity to connect with those around us, and not the food on our plates, that matters most. Because we have become accustomed and conditioned to eating a certain way in social settings, it is easy to mistake a hunger for connection with hunger for an extra slice of pizza. It doesn’t help that many of the foods we serve in celebration are exactly the kind of high-sugar, high-fat foods that create cravings and perpetuate the cycle of weight gain and obesity. Below are some suggestions for making healthier choices in the situations described above. 1. Pass on the birthday cake and choose fruit instead. 2. Bring a healthy dish to share, and eat a full meal rather than snacking throughout the game. 3. Eat before the reception or plan on dinner afterward; choose seltzer instead of wine. 4. Ask your friend to take a walk together, or meet for tea instead of drinks. When you first implement these suggestions, you may find that your friends, colleagues, and family tease or criticize you. f you haven't worn a hat since your mother plopped one on your head 20 years ago, then it's time to think about having a hat attack. Give them another chance. Hats aren't just for the Kentucky Derby anymore. They make a unique fashion statement and set you apart from the crowd. All you have to do is find the hat that works best for you. Here are some tips to topping it off in style:

--Plan a shopping trip. You may be able to buy a knit beanie online, but chances are you'll need to try on several hats to really find the perfect fit. While a good mirror is essential (full-length is even better), a great selfie is another way to "frame up" the whole picture -- the hat, the face, the hair. --Don't leave home without a friend. This is also one time when taking a friend shopping with you is a good idea. A good friend who is style savvy will give you free advice and even take pictures for you. But, just remember, you are always the final judge of what looks good on you ... and what feels comfortable.

--Consider the occasion. If you're searching for headwear for the beach, then you will not be quite as particular as searching for a dressier hat to wear to your daughter's wedding. For more special occasions, if you know what dress you'll be wearing, then take it with you when shopping for a hat to accessorize it. It may be rare that you need a hat as special as one you would wear to an event like the Kentucky Derby, but one rule of thumb: If your hat is the star of the show, keep the rest of your ensemble simple. --Keep it in proportion. My favorite hat for all occasions? A Western-inspired cowboy fedora -- always a classic that adds a little kick to whatever you wear. --Face up to your features. Face shape and body type do matter when choosing the hat that looks best on you. Wide brims balance out fuller figures; tall crowns make you look taller; brimless hats like berets and knit beanies flatter round faces. --Think about hair. This one can really make or break your hat attack. The hair styles that are trendy today -- long bobs and soft curls--are the perfect backdrop for spring and summer hats. Or you can always pull your hair back or put it up...a real boost for wearing a hat in humid weather and on bad hair days. --Don't forget sun protection. This may be the most important reason to shop for a hat this summer. Whether you're basking in the sun at the beach or just taking a stroll through your neighborhood, wearing a brimmed hat (as well as sunscreen) will definitely protect you from those harmful rays. There are lots of possibilities out there this year -- straw Panamas with a Havana vibe, patchwork bucket hats and iridescent baseball caps. Soft, foldable hats may be your best bets when traveling. hese creative powerhouses met over 20 years ago when Steven, who was the owner of LaPosh Salon in Clearwater, was searching for someone to add to his creative team. Fast forward seven years and the duo switched roles. Andrew became the owner of LaPosh Salon and Steven stayed on to become part of Andrew’s creative team. Over the next fourteen years, the two have collaborated to created a makeup line called 'Face Works', a haircare line called 'rePear by Andrew Ashton' and even created a line of red carpet evening wear shown at Tampa Bay Fashion week under the label Ashton-Anderson. On top of all that, add the roster of celebrity clients, photo

shoots and runway shows that they both have been involved in plus the TV appearances as well as life at LaPosh Salon and you have one busy schedule. The candidate chosen by them was completely made over, and an editorial photo shoot was created. The finished result... a once in a lifetime magazine cover. The pair soon realized that there was a much broader need to help people with self esteem issues or to recover from traumatic events in their lives. My Fairy GodFather program was born in 2010. Candidates are chosen based on their circumstances. Anderson and Ashton started the program as a way to help people who were struggling by bringing them hope and confidence through beauty.

BIKINIS AND TANK TOPS: The Beauty of Strength Training BY MARILYNN PRESTON

S

ummer is around the corner, and so are bikinis, tank tops, shorts, short shorts -- all in bright colors and zippy designs that often reveal doughy arms and generous thighs. Summer sports will not take them away. You can play tennis till the cows come home, run to Cleveland and back every weekend, hike, bike and surf, and still the most efficient way to look toned and tight is to strength train. There are better reasons, too. Strong bodies really are linked to strong minds. Strength training builds confidence, muscle and healthy tissue. It's also good for stable joints, injury prevention and weight loss. And yet -- slugs that we are -- fewer than 25 percent of Americans over the age of 45 work with weights on a regular basis. Blame it on our sedentary lifestyles. The heaviest thing most of us lift is our cellphone. Nothing we do requires us to raise our arms over our heads. Everyday chores may work the front body, but what about the back body, the side body, the subtle body inside your own body that benefits from a balanced program that builds muscle from top to bottom, back to front, side to side? So for all those reasons and a superset more, here are eight strength-training truths to consider -- as you decide how and when you'll get started: 1. NO AGE LIMIT ON GETTING STRONGER. Little kids have to wait until their bodies and bones are strong enough to take the stresses of weight training, but the rest of us can start where we are, and expect to see big improvements over time. The body is magnificent that way. People in their 90s are pumping iron and getting

stronger, and so will you, once you understand the basics. 2. LEARN PROPER TECHNIQUE. This is a weighty matter, because if you don't learn to lift consciously, with awareness of your breath, posture, core and limitations, you can hurt yourself. Find or share a gifted teacher/trainer, or teach yourself from books or online videos. 3. LIFT HEAVIER WEIGHTS. You won't get stronger lifting the same 10-pound weight day after day, rep after rep. For your muscles to grow, and grow stronger, you need to challenge them -- gradually, over time -- with heavier weights, so that the last two lifts are a real struggle. The "right" amount of weight will always vary, but this principle remains the same: You should be able to do 10 reps with perfect form, with the last two being a bit of a struggle. 4. MACHINES VS. FREE WEIGHTS. Both will build strength. Machines in a gym come with a price tag. Free weights speak for themselves: anytime, anywhere. Machines have a limited range of motion; free weights have infinite possibilities. (SET ITAL) Both (END ITAL) can work if YOU work, intensely, consistently, thoughtfully, with proper attention paid to form and breathing. Body weight exercises -- squats, pushups, lunges -- should also be part of your routine, which is why it's smart to consult with someone knowledgeable when you're first getting started. (Yoga works, too, but today's focus is working with weights.)

5. EXPECT SORENESS. It's called DOMS -- delayed onset muscle soreness -- and it's what you can expect after a good workout. Pain is different. "No pain, no gain" is no way to approach a (SET ITAL) sustainable (END ITAL) strengthtraining practice. If your trainer thinks otherwise, find a wiser one. 6. KNOW YOUR BODY. Spend a little time looking at anatomical drawings so you'll know your kidney from your colon, your patella from your pubic bone. This will help you create and execute a balanced workout: front to back, side to side, pushing and pulling. 7. BE EFFICIENT. A 20-minute workout can be just as good as a 40-minute workout, if you know what you're doing and why. Compound movements, for example -- a bicep curl combined with a lunge -- will give you twice the benefit in half the time. So will super slow lifting and high-intensity interval training. Again, study up and experiment until you find a routine that sparks joy two or three times a week. 8. USE IT OR LOSE IT. It's an inconvenient truth that as we age, we lose muscle and grow weak unless we do something special to stay strong. Enough said? EXERCISE DROPOUT? A Gentle Investigation of Self-Sabotage BY MARILYNN PRESTON

I

s exercise good for you? Duh. Regular workouts give you strength, energy, a trimmer body, a healthier heart, a calmer mind and a much lower risk of at least 35 (!) different devastating diseases, including high blood pressure, stroke, osteoporosis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, diverticulitis, Type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer and, yes, even that star of prime-time TV: erectile dysfunction. In spite of what we know, we don't do. According to the latest research, 92 percent of adolescents and 95 percent of adults in the U.S. do not meet the minimum guidelines for physical activity. Oh, dear. When I think about the gap between what we know about the benefits of exercise vs. how much we actually do, I get weak in the knees. And then I remember this: There is a right way and a wrong way to approach exercise. Do it thoughtlessly, impatient for quick results, and you are setting yourself up to fail. Do it consciously, and your chances of lifelong success are greatly improved. Here are some of the ways in which people sabotage their own fitness, and, yes, dear reader, I may be talking to you: 1. YOU AREN'T TRULY COMMITTED. Saying you want to get in shape is not enough. You've got to have a deepdown, nothing-will-stop-me commitment. Change will happen only when you are ready, and when you are -- hallelujah! -- not only will you be able to overcome every obstacle; you will actually enjoy the process. 2. YOU HAVE FAILED BEFORE.

Many people don't understand that change is not linear. It's often two steps forward, one step back. Exercise dropouts have failed before, and the fear of failing again often makes them quit. You can break this self-defeating cycle by taking fear of failure off the table. Know you can succeed, and you will succeed, if you are patient and persistent. 3. YOU PUNISH YOURSELF INSTEAD OF REWARDING YOURSELF. Negative self-talk will derail you. Listen to your inner voice. If it says you're lazy, stupid, ate too much and can't get to the gym today, tell it to take a hike. Start a new inner dialogue based on kindness and compassion for the healthier, happier person you want to be. Create positive affirmations, like "I am capable of change and growth," and repeat them often. 4. YOU COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS. Your best pal runs halfmarathons and you struggle with a 10K. Wendy can cycle 40 miles and you can barely finish 20. So what? Jealousy and envy are counterproductive and will lead you astray. Run your own race at your own pace. If you see others who are stronger, more flexible, thinner or more athletic, be happy for them ... smile ... and return your focus to your own situation. Be grateful you have a situation. 5. YOU REFUSE TO KEEP A JOURNAL. This may sound like a homework assignment from your dreaded algebra teacher, but the truth is, keeping a journal is a great tool for staying on track. So try

it. Just a few observations: what you did; how long you did it; how you felt. Once you have the exercise habit in place, you can stop with the journaling. 6. YOU EXPECT QUICK RESULTS. Impatience is a big problem for people just starting to exercise regularly. You expect immediate results, and when you don't see them, you find a reason to quit. Outsmart yourself. Take it day by day. Find joy in just showing up. In time, all the benefits of regular exercise will come your way. It takes the time it takes. 7. YOU SEE YOURSELF AS THE VICTIM. Many exercise dropouts blame their failure on someone or something: I can't take time away from my kids. My job is too demanding. I travel too much. These are excuses created to test your true intention. When you take responsibility for your own health and wellness, you give up being a victim and start living the more active, balanced, joyful life you've always wanted. The beauty of self-sabotage is, whatever you do, you can undo. No guilt, no shame, just a willingness to start where you are -- this time with a new, improved attitude and greater understanding about what it takes to succeed. And what does it take? IT'S WHAT HAPPENS NEXT THAT COUNTS BY SCOTT LAFEE

F

or perhaps the first time ever, there are more overweight or obese people in the world than people who are underweight. A study that analyzed data collected from 1975 to 2014 involving 19.2 million adults in 186 countries found that the proportion of obese men worldwide tripled to roughly 11 percent. For women, it doubled to 15 percent. Percentages for underweight people fell during this time period from 14 percent to 9 percent for men and 15 to 10 percent for women. Counting calories is one way people try to fight back, though obviously with dubious overall results. In countries like the United States and United Kingdom, more than two-thirds of the adult population are obese or overweight. So researchers at the Royal Society of Public Health are suggesting a greater effort needs to be made to link calorie consumption to calorie expenditure. To wit: It doesn't really matter how many (or how few) calories you consume if you aren't also burning a sufficient number of them. The Society's idea is to create "activity equivalent" food labeling, with symbols showing how much exercise would be required to burn the calories consumed in a food product. Would you drink a can of soda if you knew you had to walk half-an-hour to burn it off? That's what we thought. The toy is calorie-free When it comes to meeting healthy calorie counts, almost three-quarters of kids' meals at fast-food restaurants (72

percent) meet the recommended numbers. (Daily totals vary by age and degree of activity, but for, say, a kid 9-13 years old, it's roughly 1,800-2,200 calories for a boy; 1,600-2,000 for a girl.) That's the good news, sort of. The bad news, according to new research published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, is that those meals remain way too high in levels of sodium and saturated fat. BODY OF KNOWLEDGE A normal swallow takes eight to 12 seconds, from mouth to stomach. GET ME THAT, STAT! ou must be living under a rock if you haven't seen the avalanche of starburst and sunburst mirrors in home decor stores, antique shops and magazines. Why, you may ask? Well, they are considered iconic in the design world, and offer a classic design that fits in with most styles of decor, from traditional to contemporary,

and in between. Since the court of Louis XVI in France, the sun and the stars have been the source of inspiration. It can be said that Louis XVI is considered the father of this style. Louis XVI was sometimes referred as the "sun king" due to his love of the sun and belief in the power of its rays. These mirrors whose design evolves around a round central mirror with spokes all around the perimeter are called sunburst when finished in gold, reminiscent of the sun and starburst when finished in silver, but essentially either name can be used interchangeably. Many historians believe that the

design of these mirrors is a result of repurposed crowns from icons and saintly statuary. Another telltale sign of their religious past, are found in older starburst mirrors that may have a cloud, a dove or eye over the rays. These starburst were symbolic of God, a dramatic sample is that at the end of the nave at Saint Peter's in the Vatican. The starburst has a stained glass window at its center, which faces west. At sunset every day the light streams making the starburst almost seem three-dimensional. An extremely dramatic focal point. During the 1940s, sunburst mirrors made their debut into the interior design world. Designers such as Gilbert Poillerat in France to Dorothy Draper in the USA helped popularize the mirror by incorporating them into their projects. In recent history, starburst and sunburst mirrors were all the rage during the 1960s. Streamlined and futuristic, these mirrors were inspired by mid-century architecture, aeronautical ideas and visions of what the future would look like. It's no surprise that this design icon is timeless and loved so much by interior designers and architects. These mirrors add radiance to the room, and their shape is so strong, that when placed above a console, couch or bed, these mirrors become the focal point. Originally these mirrors were strategically placed to catch the light coming in from any window. Sometimes the mirrors are flat, but some are convex to maximize and reflect light. A fine example of this can be seen in the 15th Century portrait of the Arnolfini family by Flemish painter Jan van Eyck. Both sunburst and starburst mirrors are available in varied materials such as guilded wood, papier-mache, iron, bone, silver and brass. Finishes are generally shiny to reflect any light on them. Today's sunburst mirrors have taken center stage in decoration. Many of these mirrors have been produced in an overscale size, as to even replace works of art. In cases where the mirrors are not so large, a grouping of mirrors can give a WOW and unexpected statement to a room.

Whether you choose to call this a Backyard Bistro or an Outdoor Oasis, we need to consider outdoor countertops? Outdoor kitchens used to be a Luxury, nowadays its mainstream especially here in Tampa Bay; we realize the backyard is basically another room. When choosing Outdoor Countertops, durability must come first, and looks second. Let’s take a look at a few of these materials to see what may work for your lifestyle. Granite: I am sure you’ve heard this is the best option from everyone. Most professionals know that not all granite is the same, and although it may be durable, there are other concerns. Dark Granites may get so hot from the sun that nobody will want to rest their forearms on them. Granites with many grains may have epoxies and fillers inside the grains that may not like the sun. Raise these concerns with your granite fabricator and if they disagree with my statement, get it in writing. Lighter stones may be the best to defend heat, but then the stains may show if not properly maintained. In last month’s issue of Panache Vue’ I wrote an article on healthy Countertops with some tips on Sealers. That may also help you decide on how to protect your beautiful granite. Concrete: Concrete is a durable surface with many color options and design flexibility with items to mix in. Concrete countertop artists can actually add nice

veining and designs. Just like granite, the lighter the color, the cooler the top, the smoother the texture, the more stain resistant it is, the better the sealer the easier the clean-up. Recycled Glass: there are many brands out there of Recycled Glass tops, some are made with resin and some are made of Concrete. Make sure you know the difference in durability; they look the same but react differently to the elements. The tops made with resin need to be covered from direct sunlight, but have the benefit of being non-porous for more stain resistance. The Concrete mixes can be in direct sunlight, the glass might get hot to touch. Brands like Vetrazzo are stained dark and will not fade from direct sunlight, many may tell you stained concrete will fade, that may be true when staining concrete is not done by a professional. Vetrazzo backs up this statement with a warranty. Brands like Icestone the color is mixed in the cement, so they may have more options for you with color. Glass Tops: I know many think Glass will break. It will break just as much as granite would. However, you may want to get to know which type of Glass to use, Glass Tops come very thick and have nice chiseled edges or designs that can be artistically painted underneath. Glass2 is a new brand of recycled glass fused together which is great for outdoors but is still in testing stages to be in direct sunlight. Avonite or Corian Surfaces: The lighter colors will stay cool and darker colors will fade in time. It has been used in many outdoor applications such as playground fixtures, wall cladding on the exterior of buildings, and Pool surrounds. Many of these

pictures and data can be found by simply searching online. Avonite Polyester Surfaces: this is a material that is outstanding but would need to be covered and can withstand the elements as it is non-porous. The designs are endless with this material. Polymer King Starboard ST: this material is mostly used for outdoor cabinetry and comes in many colors. This material can be made into a cool durable countertop with using multiple colors in edge treatment and backsplash options. Other materials available are tile (think about the grout though), Metals like copper and stainless, Slate, Soapstone, Teak, Quartz, and Honed Marble. Remember it’s the Design application not the material that will fail. s Americans hustle and bustle to make ends meet and the work hours extend well beyond 40 hours per week, stress is an alltime high. Stress is responsible for triggering incidents from panic attacks to illness and even cardiac arrest. This is why the spa business is booming at an alarming rate. While some business folks may

get the occasional perks of downtime to book a day at a spa, most American families do not have the luxury of time. Bringing the concept of the spa to your home is becoming quite popular. Creating an at-home getaway is the goal when transforming your bathroom into a spa. There are several factors to consider in such a home improvement project. To get your bathroom to capture the spa feeling, you will want to capture as much room as possible. You will need more room to accommodate a luxurious tub to soak in, a large shower with massaging jet sprays, or perhaps a steam unit to transform your shower into a steam bath, a bench inside the shower, and a place to sit down and relax.

Give good consideration to plumbing fixtures and hardware. These valves and controls are important because they are tactile items, which affect the way you perceive your spa-bathroom. They are also effective to express a sense of luxury and relaxation. The colors that are used in spas are deliberately chosen to reduce stress. The colors that are most used as those inspired by the sky, ocean and earth. These colors are usually very light. While they may seem washed out, these colors that are dusty and seem to insinuate another are the best. Like a soft white with an aqua green shimmer, or a beige that reflects salmon paired. These pale colors work the best when paired with white, gray or espresso cabinetry and trim. Today's new spa-bathroom combinations also make a statement with tiles and stone treatments. The more exotic the marble, granite or quartz, the better. Sometimes great slabs are book-matched for an incredible organic pattern on walls and floors. Mosaics are historically tied to baths since pre-Roman times, and today with advances in technology, micro tiles can be laser cut and assembled to create the most incredible and fantastic patterns and designs. Other items to be considered in the design of a spa-bathroom: Candles: For burning at specific times, can be soothing. I would suggest a subtle aromatherapeutic scent. Small votive around your bath area can be beautiful, but also give off a relaxing glow. The Best Linens: Accessorizing you bathroom with a nice bathrobe, thick absorbent towels, and bathmats are both useful and make your slippery surfaces safe. Flowers and Plants: Are a great invigorating element of nature to add to your spa-bathroom. Plants are great because they help clean the air and give off oxygen. Music: Part of the spa experience is too soothe your body and soul. Music is the best therapy to aid in relaxation and stress reduction. Spas pipe soft music everywhere for a reason. Add a couple of new jazz CDs to your repertoire and you are well on your way.

TO WALLPAPER OR NOT BY JOSEPH PUBILLONES

W

allpaper is one of those touchy subjects in interior design -either you love it or hate it. We can all recall a dated or hideous installation that has made us fear it for life. Maybe it's been the fault of the dark floral and paisley at the "charming " bed and breakfast, or maybe your Aunt Beulah's flocked damask black on gold number in her dining room that looked more like the receiving parlor of a second rate bordello. Scary? Yes! On the other hand, wallpaper or the technologically accurate wall coverings have adorned the walls of the most beautiful and chic rooms around the world. Selecting an appropriate wall covering involves a notion of color, scale, pattern, texture and the type of room and source of light. Wallpaper has been around as long as history itself. Since 200 BC, China had been utilizing rice paper glued to the walls of their dwellings. With the advent of papermaking around 100 AD, wallpaper was born. This concept spread throughout the world. Arabians substituted paper fibers for bamboos, reeds and woods into the mix. By the 12th Century, wallpaper had made its way to Europe, and to the Americas by the 1730s. Up to this point, wallpapers were printed by hand, and therefore reserved for special projects. In the late 18th Century, the French invented a wallpaper making machine, and thus making the goods possible for larger rooms. Louis XVI issued a decree setting forth the length of a wallpaper roll to 34 feet, a standard that is nearly the same today. During the 20th Century in the U.S., the further development of mechanics made it wallpaper available to the masses.

Wallpaper has been in and out of fashion, as finicky as hemlines, every decade. Today, wall coverings are undoubtedly influenced by fashion and art. Available in a myriad of materials ranging from handmade art paper, sand, cork, mica chip, threads and even shells, today's wall coverings do not disappoint. Can't find the perfect wall covering? Almost any surface can be wallpapered, walls, ceilings, staircase risers. But be judicious with how much wallpaper you install. Not every surface needs to be covered. Otherwise your home will be that scary place everyone is afraid to visit. Your guest will probably be too kind to tell you otherwise, but trust me on this one. Not that I am against DIY projects or weekend warriors, but a perfect installation can either make or break a wall covering. Spend a little money on a professional installer, your home will love you for it, and you will love your home.

GRILLING SAFETY BY CHARLYN FARGO

I

t's time to clean the grill and get ready for the summer grilling season. Just how can you stay healthy and cancerprotective when cooking out? The American Institute for Cancer Research experts say there is not yet enough evidence to know for certain that grilling meat specifically increases risk for cancers. But they offer a few simple precautions. "Here's what we do know," says Alice Bender registered dietitian and Head of Nutrition Programs at AICR. "Cooking meat at a high temperature -- like grilling -- creates substances called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines. Smoking or charring meat also contributes to the formation of PAHs. These substances are carcinogens, with the potential to cause

changes in DNA that may lead to cancer." Whether or not you grill meat, new research is convincing that diets high in red meat contribute to an increased risk of colorectal cancer, and that even small amounts of processed meats, eaten regularly, increase risk for both colorectal cancer and stomach cancer. AICR recommends limiting red meat to 18 ounces of cooked meat per week and saving hot dogs or other processed meats (bacon, sausages, etc.) for special occasions. "What matters most is what you cook, not how you cook it," Bender said. "It's clear that what you eat day to day -- focusing on vegetables, whole grains, beans and fruit over red meat -- provides the most cancer protection." AICR offers five steps to decrease potential risks associated with grilling: --Marinate: Studies have suggested that marinating your meat before grilling can decrease the formation of HCAs. Scientists theorize that the antioxidants in these marinades block HCAs from forming.

--Pre-Cook: If you are grilling larger cuts, you can reduce the time your meat is exposed to the flames by partially cooking it in a microwave, oven or stove first. Immediately place the partially cooked meat on the preheated grill. This helps keep your meat safe from bacteria and other food pathogens that can cause illness. --Go Lean: Trimming the fat off your meat can reduce flare-ups and charring. Cook your meat in the center of the grill and make sure to flip frequently. --Mix It Up: Cutting meat into smaller portions and mixing in veggies can help shorten cooking time. --Go Green: Grilling vegetables and fruits produces no HCAs -- and diets high in plant foods are associated with lower cancer risk. Q AND A Q: Does whole-wheat flour go bad more quickly than all-purpose flour? A: Yes, whole-wheat flour will go bad sooner than all-purpose flour. This is due


to the fact that whole-wheat flour has higher oil content because it retains the inner germ and outer bran layers. Exposure to air causes the oil in flour to degrade over time, causing the flour to develop a rancid smell. Given this, it is important to consider two things when purchasing flour -- the size of the bag you should purchase and how you plan to store it. "Flour generally is sold in two and five-pound bags. If you live alone or don't bake very often, choose the smaller bag. For best storage practices, choose a cool, dry cupboard to store your flour in, and store it in an airtight container. The Whole Grains Council says that if store properly in airtight containers, most whole-grain flours will keep for one to three months on a cool, dry pantry shelf, or two to six months in the freezer. All-purpose flour, on the other hand, can last for 8 to 12 months if stored properly. Note: All flours are susceptible to bugs (weevils). If your flour smells bad or contains small bugs, discard it. -- Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter.

RECIPE For many of us, chicken is a go-to weeknight dinner. Now that it's grilling season, it's even easier to get a chicken dinner on the table. Here's a recipe for Mojo-Grilled Chicken Breasts from Cooking Light magazine. MOJO-GRILLED CHICKEN BREASTS • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper • 6 garlic cloves, minced • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves • Cooking spray • 1 medium red onion, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch rings • 1 ripe avocado, peeled and sliced • 1 lime, cut into wedges • Chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish

Combine 1/4 cup chopped cilantro and next 4 ingredients (through garlic) in a large bowl. Reserve 1/4 cup marinade in a medium bowl. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and chicken to remaining marinade, turning to coat. Let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes, turning occasionally. Heat a grill pan over high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add onion slices to pan; grill 10 minutes, turning occasionally. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and onions to reserved 1/4 cup marinade; cover tightly with plastic wrap. Let stand 10 minutes. Return grill pan to high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Remove chicken from marinade; discard marinade. Sprinkle chicken evenly with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add chicken to pan; grill 5 minutes on each side or until done (165 degrees). Serve chicken with onion mixture, avocado slices and lime wedges. Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serves 4 (serving size: about 4 ounces chicken, 1/4 cup onions and 1/4 avocado). Per serving: 217 calories, 25 g protein, 7 g carbohydrate, 1 g sugars, 9.8 g fat, 73 mg cholesterol, 3 g fiber, 495 mg sodium.

VEGGIES TO THE RESCUE BY CHARLYN FARGO

O

h, the power of bright orange and deep green veggies -- full of alpha and beta carotene. A new analysis of data finds those who consume more carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, peppers, cantaloupe and dark leafy greens have a good chance of lowering their risk of breast cancer. Researchers found that women with higher blood levels of alpha-and beta-carotene were significantly less likely to have breast cancer. Data in the study was from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition and published in Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter, May 2016.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compared 1,502 breast cancer patients with an equal number of healthy women. Blood samples were used to measure levels of carotenoids, vitamin A (retinol), vitamin C and vitamin E (tocopherol). Comparing the highest versus the lowest one-fifth, levels of alpha-carotene (39 percent lower) and beta carotene (59 percent lower) were inversely associated with breast cancer incidence. The association was limited to estrogen receptor negative tumors, and no statistically significant associations were found for vitamins A, C or E. Researchers said the results supported at 2012 meta-analysis of eight studies that concluded women with higher blood levels of carotenoids may be at reduced risk of breast cancer. Just what are carotenoids? They are the yellow, orange and red pigments synthesized by plants. In addition to foods of

those colors, they are also found in dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale and green veggies such as broccoli and peas. The study's authors caution against trying to find the same benefit from dietary supplements of alpha and beta carotene. Pills, they write, don't deliver the dietary fiber, phytonutrients and other vitamins and minerals found in vegetables and fruits. The bottom line is: Choose the most colorful fruits and vegetables. And to get the most benefit of carotenoids from food, chop, puree or cook fruits and vegetables to increase their bioavailabilty. It also helps to eat them along with some healthy fats -unsaturated is best -- because they are fatsoluble nutrients. Q AND A Q: Do I need more water when I drink coffee so I don't get dehydrated? A: Drinking water throughout the day


is an excellent habit, but you don't need extra because you drink coffee. Research now shows that moderate amounts of coffee, whether regular or decaf, contribute to keeping your body hydrated. The small diuretic effect from the caffeine is more than counter-balanced by the fluid we get as we drink coffee. In two recent studies in men, coffee did not differ from tea, a sports drink, sugary cola, diet cola, or plain water in how it affects signs of water loss over a few hours or days. Studies showing little or no dehydrating effect of coffee usually involve amounts of caffeine in two or three eight-ounce cups of coffee (250 to 300 milligrams). Given these findings, there's no reason to expect having more coffee would cause dehydration problems. Moderate coffee consumption, three to five cups a day, is linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes and AICR's latest reports found that coffee links to lower risk for endometrial and liv-

er cancers. The concern, then, is simply to avoid amounts of coffee that lead to sleep disturbance or individual health issues. -American Institute for Cancer Research. RECIPE For weeknight dinners, sometimes the fewer the ingredients the better. Here's a recipe from Cooking Light magazine that's quick and easy -- five ingredients. GRILLED STEAK WITH PINEAPPLE RICE • 1/4 cup lower sodium soy sauce • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 4 (4-ouce) beef tenderloin fillets • Cooking spray • 1 (8-ounce) can pineapples slices in juice, drained • 6 green onions • 2 (8.8-ounce) packages precooked

brown rice • 7/8 teaspoon kosher salt Combine soy sauce, pepper and beef in a large zip-top plastic bag. Massage sauce into beef; let stand at room temperature 7 minutes, turning bag occasionally. While steak marinates, heat a large grill pan over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Arrange pineapple and green onions in pan; cook 5 minutes or until well charred, turning to char evenly. Cut onions and pineapple into bite-sized pieces. Heat rice according to package directions, stir in pineapple, onions and salt. Keep warm. SHAKING THE SALT HABIT BY CHARLYN FARGO

A

lmost all of us could benefit from shaking the salt habit -- not so much the habit of using the salt shaker -but eliminating the salt in processed foods. Simply put, too much salt can lead to serious health problems. Many of us aren't aware of just how much sodium we consume. A single teaspoon of table salt has 2,325 milligrams of sodium. It's true we need some sodium to function properly -- sodium helps maintain the right balance of fluids in the body, helps transmit nerve impulses and influences muscle contraction and relaxation. Our kidneys naturally balance the amount of sodium stored in our bodies. When body sodium is low, the kidneys hold on to the sodium. When body sodium is high, the kidneys excrete the excess in urine. However, if for some reason the kidneys can't eliminate enough sodium, the sodium starts

to build up in the blood. Because sodium attracts and holds water, blood volume increases, which makes the heart work harder and increases pressure in arteries. Too much leads to fluid retention. How much sodium do we need? The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day -- less than a single teaspoon of salt. But the average American gets about 3,400 mg of sodium a day. Sources of sodium include processed and prepared foods, sodium found naturally in foods and the saltshaker and foods high in sodium such as soy sauce. Mayo Clinic offers some ways to cut back on sodium: --Eat more fresh foods. Most fresh fruits and vegetables are naturally low in sodium. Also, fresh meat is lower in sodium than are luncheon meat, bacon, hot dogs, sausage and ham. Buy fresh or frozen poultry or meat that hasn't been injected with a sodium-containing solution such as air-chilled poultry. --Opt for low-sodium products. If you do buy processed foods, choose those that are labeled "low sodium" or "no salt added." Better yet, buy plain whole-grain

rice and pasta instead of products that have added seasonings. --Remove salt from recipes whenever possible. You can leave out the salt in many recipes, including casseroles, soups, stews and other main dishes that you cook. Look for cookbooks that focus on lowering risks of high blood pressure and heart disease. --Limit use of sodium-laden condiments. Soy sauce, salad dressings, sauces, dips, ketchup, mustard and relish all contain sodium. --Use herbs, spices and other flavorings to season foods. Use fresh or dried herbs, spices, zest and juice from citrus fruit to jazz up your meals. Sea salt, however, isn't a good substitute. It has about the same amount of sodium as table salt. Q AND A Q: Can chewing gum help you lose weight? A: It may help some people lose weight, but don't count on it as an important strategy. There are several theories as to why chewing gum may support weight loss, but research doesn't show strong results. One often-quoted study found that chewing gum may burn about 11 calories an hour. This could be compared to the small extra


daily calorie burn found in people who tap their toes or otherwise "fidget" all day, and it is unlikely to produce weight loss. Others propose that the act of chewing may lead to changes in digestive hormones that decrease hunger, thus making it easier to cut calories for weight loss. This makes sense in theory, but short-term controlled trials haven't shown the expected hormonal change. Chewing gum may aid weight loss by replacing overeating for some. Participants in one controlled study showed a 10 percent drop in mid-afternoon snacking when they chewed gum 15 minutes each hour after lunch. But, in a controlled trial that followed overweight people for eight weeks, those who chewed gum 90 minutes a day did not lose weight any more successfully than those who didn't chew gum. Consider other strategies to avoid extra eating. Brushing your teeth immediately after a meal helps some people. Try the tradition followed in India of ending meals by chewing a few fennel seeds, or just enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee. If you find that chewing gum helps, that's great, but think of it as just one small part of changing eating habits to support weight loss. -- American Institute for Cancer Research.

RECIPE I use my slow cooker all year round -- it helps me put dinner on the table on those days when schedules are crazy. Cooking Light magazine recently published their "best" slow cooker chicken. The recipe calls for bone-in thighs and plenty of garlic to boost flavor. SLOW COOKER GARLIC-INFUSED CHICKEN • Cooking spray • 1 cup unsalted chicken stock • 1/4 cup dry white wine • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, divided • 6 skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs (about 1.5 pounds) • 1 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided • 1 1/2 pounds small red potatoes, scrubbed • 40 garlic cloves, peeled • 12 fresh thyme sprigs • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Coat bottom and sides of a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Combine stock, wine, flour, butter and 1 tablespoon lemon juice in a medium bowl, stirring with a whisk; pour mixture into slow cooker. Sprinkle chicken thighs evenly with 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Place thighs in slow cooker, skin side down. Arrange potatoes, garlic and thyme over chicken in slow cooker. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper evenly over garlic and potatoes. Cover slow cooker; cook on LOW for 8 hours. Transfer chicken to a platter. Transfer potatoes and garlic to platter with a slotted spoon; discard thyme sprigs. Sprinkle chicken and potatoes with remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, remaining 1 tablespoon lemon juice and parsley. Strain cooking liquid from slow cooker through a sieve into a liquid measuring cup; let stand 3 minutes. Discard any fat that rises to top of liquid. Serve jus with chicken, potatoes and garlic cloves. Serves 6. (servings size: 1 thigh, 1/4 pound potatoes and 5 tablespoons jus). Per serving: 342 calories, 20 g protein, 29 g carbohydrate, 14.1 g fat, 100 mg cholesterol, 3 g fiber, 664 mg sodium.

(Why can't I remember where I read that study? Is this a sign of age-related mental decline? Or just Trump-induced stress?) Get me to the running path. A lifestyle

that includes time in your day to walk, jog, bike, dance or even garden is one of the best ways you can stop kvetching about your memory and remember this: There are things you can do that can boost your brain power, even if the lights are dimming elsewhere. GROW YOUR GRAY MATTER. The research is in, again and again: Physical activity is essential when it comes to growing your gray matter, particularly in those regions of the brain responsible for memory and higher-level thinking. (An example of higher-level thinking would be tossing out all products with artificial sweeteners.) According to an important new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, brain scan studies now confirm what neuroscientists have been telling us for ages: Physical activity can prevent and

postpone mental decline in aging brains. It can even substantially reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. Imagine that. No magic pills, no fetal-lamb-cell smoothies. Just you and your body in motion, a few times a week, and the researchers aren't talking about hardcore, super-strenuous workouts. Nope. That's part of the wonder of it all. Even recreational amounts of cycling, walking and pulling out weeds make a big difference when it comes to keeping your marbles. EAT SMART. I'm not a fan of diet as a verb, but there are certain types of diets-asa-noun that are worth discussing. The latest for brain health is the MIND diet, developed by researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. (Full disclosure: Rush is my maiden name and Chicago is my hometown, but other than that, it's all a coincidence.)


The MIND diet is the love child of the DASH diet (targeted for lowering blood pressure) and the gold-standard Mediterranean diet. Besides blueberries, for the antioxidants, it also wants you to eat healthy fats such as salmon, nuts and olive oil. Why? Because they are the fats your body needs to stay in balance and combat inflammation. Non-fat products, which are mostly fake foods, don't do that. I know it's counterintuitive -- as in, "Doesn't fat make you fat?" -- but the bottom line is, nutrition-wise, you can't fool Mother Nature. Well, you can for a while, but she will probably mess with your brain and make you gain weight. MIND YOUR GREENS. The MIND diet also includes eating leafy greens. The Rush University researchers found that people who ate two servings a day had

the cognitive ability of someone 11 years younger. Eleven years younger! Talk about nuts. It's crazy to think how much money the country could save if citizens started making healthy food choices instead of the ad-induced kind. "Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in the country," says the Alzheimer's Association, advertising these days on Politico, where I hope they are getting through to decision-makers. "Every hour, Alzheimer's costs the country $18.3 million dollars. Today, Alzheimer's costs the country $236 billion a year and that will quadruple to more than $1 trillion over the next generation." That blows my mind. A trillion dollars ain't chicken feed, which is also likely to be a cause of Alzheimer's, but I digress. TURN OFF THE TV. I know small-

screen activity is pretty irresistible, but resist you must if you want a strategy to save your brain. A 2005 study in the journal Brain and Cognition found that for people between the ages of 40 and 59, the risk of Alzheimer's went up 1.3 times with every added hour of TV they watched per day. It's an old study, but 11 years later, we're swimming even deeper in the soup of small-screen disturbance and Distraction Disease is rampant. Attention deficit disorder is just another way of saying "I've got to check my email one more time." A meditation practice -- even 10 minutes a day -- is one wise way to combat technology overload. HISTORY, FOOD AND DRAMA BECKON VISITORS TO CYPRUS BY VICTOR BLOCK

W

omen who live in a tiny mountain village sit together sewing lace tablecloths that are famous all over the world for their beauty and fine workmanship. In a city not far away, diners at sidewalk cafes enjoy their fill of grilled pork, baked lamb and other local favorite foods. A white sand beach is the main attraction for people who are more interested in getting a tan than their fill of tasty treats. These are among scenes that greet travelers to Cyprus, the eastern-most island in Europe and in the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors also find inviting scenery,

friendly folks and a collection of archaeological treasures that are reminders of civilizations that have come, gone and left their imprint. One big attraction is the variety of intriguing appeals on this small island republic. That's welcome news for the traveler interested in seeing and doing a lot without having to cover much ground. Setting the stage is the fact that for 11,000 years Cyprus served as a crossroads connecting Europe, Asia and Africa. The result is a unique blend of customs, architectural styles and other cultural traits left by the people who passed through. They included visitors from both the Greek and Roman empires, the Crusaders, Venetians and the British, among others. Archaeological sites that are dotted about the island serve as reminders of these callers. Medieval castles and Byzantine monasteries continue to serve useful purposes. Forest-clad mountains lead to hills that are blanketed by orange groves and vineyards. Also characteristic of Cyprus are remote villages, tiny clusters of stone houses with red tile roofs that have changed little over countless decades.

Coffee shops serve as centers of village life. They are where men congregate to play backgammon, discuss the day's news, and sip coffee or the local wine. Village wine is a Cypriot tradition, one that has won praise for more than 3,000 years. The island's mild, sunny climate and fertile soil produce vintages that were celebrated in the writings of Pliny the Elder in Roman times and were favored by royalty during the Middle Ages. Some traditional winemakers still use oversized clay pots, much as the ancient Greeks and Romans did. The wine is fermented, aged and stored in the large terracotta containers, and vintners who cling to that practice insist that it improves the flavor of the beverage. Today the cultivation of vineyards and making of wine remain the major occupation of many inhabitants of the Krassohoria wine villages, a group of towns that cover the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains. Lovely wine enclaves also are grouped around Limassol, the secondlargest city on Cyprus and the center of its commercial wine industry. What could capture the spirit of Cy-


prus more than enjoying a bottle of wine and a meal at one of the thousands of tavernas that tempt passersby with the aromas of the kitchen and sounds of good times? Among favorite menu choices, often listed on a blackboard outside restaurants, are lamb, wild game, fresh vegetables and halloumi, a thick, salty cheese that is grilled to a crusty texture. A good way to sample the island cuisine is the popular meze ("mixture"), small servings of a variety of the items that are available that day in the taverna. While portions are small, as many as two dozen dishes may be included, and no one leaves hungry. The feast might begin with a cucumber and yogurt dip and small fried meatballs, then move to spicy grilled pork patties and lamb baked in a brick oven. Many a meal ends with bourekia, a lightly fried pastry filled with cinnamon and other ingredients. When visitors have had their fill of the local cuisine, they may turn their attention to the more lasting attractions that are scattered about the island. Representing so many periods of the past, the Cypriots have transformed the landscape into an open-air history museum.

Some of the earliest prehistoric remnants are found in Choirokoitia, the site of a Neolithic settlement dating back to the seventh millennium B.C. Among artifacts that have been unearthed are tools, graves and beehive-shaped stone houses. The best-known mythical figure associated with Cyprus is Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The Temple of Aphrodite at Kouklia village was an important place of worship, and festivals were held there until the fourth century. The legendary deity was believed to have been born at a site near Paphos, arising from the sea on a shell. Paphos also is important for other reasons. Perched on the southwestern tip of Cyprus, it has a bustling little harbor, a museum containing jewelry and other displays from as early as the 15th century B.C. and a Byzantine museum with a notable collection of icons. Another major attraction is an extraordinary group of mosaics that adorn the floors of noblemen's villas that were built in the third century. These tile scenes, which depict various tales of Greek mythology, retain their grace and much of their brilliance even after lying buried for

18 centuries. An even more impressive archaeological gem is at Kourion, where ruins dating from Hellenistic and Roman times spill across a high rocky ledge. A long oval wall remains from what once was an imposing stadium. Villas are adorned with fifth-century B.C. floor mosaics that spell out their original names, including the "House With Wells" and "House of Gladiators." Most spectacular is the magnificent Greco-Roman theater that was built in the second century B.C. and enlarged 400 years later. Located near the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea, the open-air structure provides a spectacular setting for productions of classical Greek dramas, modern plays and musical concerts. Enjoying an artistic presentation in such a magnificent setting is reason enough to consider Cyprus as a vacation destination.
