Q: What is the DRX9000? A: The DRX 9000 is a state of the art machine that allows us to perform spinal decompression in the comfort of our offices.

With his state of the art DRX9000, Dr. Carl Conforti, DC is changing the lives of people who experience the following:

Q: What kind of conditions do you treat with your spinal decompression? A: The DRX9000 allows us to treat quite a few conditions. We have both neck and back decompression, so we treat for neck pain, sciatic pain, lower back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, bulging and herniated discs, and many other injuries.

• Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless nights • Back or neck injury as the result of an accident • Numbness in your hands or toes

Q: How do you determine if someone is a candidate for your treatment process? A: In our candidate assessment we review MRI’s, x-rays, and we utilize our computerized spinal exam (EMG) to evaluate the problem. After reviewing all of the tests, we discuss medical history and the complexity of the issues.

• Degenerative disc disease • Herniated and bulging discs • Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery

Q: So once you decide that someone is a candidate, what can they expect next? A: Once we have determined that someone is a candidate for the spinal decompression treatment, we lay out a treatment plan and start treatment as soon as possible. Many times we can start the patient that week, and sometimes even that day! With the treatment plan in mind, we start the spinal decompression and our other treatments that we use alongside the spinal decompression to ensure that our patients get optimal results!

• Spinal stenosis

Q: Do the treatments hurt? A: No, not at all. In fact, many of our patients fall asleep during the treatment process. Others choose to read books and listen to music. It is actually a very relaxing treatment.

The treatment process does not involve any surgery or painful recovery and provides a PERMANENT solution to neck and back pain to patients throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Q: What is your success rate with this treatment? A: As opposed to traditional surgery, which is about 50% success, our treatment process is successful over 80% of the time. Our careful attention to specific needs and our full in office treatment process allows our patients to be back enjoying their lives pain free and full of life!

his is the time of year when we should all be thankful and give thanks to all of those around us. I feel blessed in so many ways. I am thankful for my health, my loving and supportive family, friends and business partners, many who I consider an extension of my family. Many of us have family and loved ones up North, including myself. The recent impact of Hurricane Sandy has hurt so many people and destroyed so many lives. There are things in life that can be replaced, lives cannot be. I hope that this holiday season we all think twice about helping those that really need help. I’ve been fortunate to be involved in so many local charities and organizations because of my magazine, which to me is a blessing in itself for which I am forever grateful! Leaving His Mark

Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath Talks Life, Love & Fatherhood BY TOM CASTAÑEDA

“In a million years, I didn’t think I had the talent to become successful,” declares Mark McGrath, the lead singer of the pop rock band Sugar Ray. “I was not put on this earth to be a singer.” But the 44-year-old music maker has defied his own doubts about his potential to front a band that has left an indelible mark on pop culture with hit songs like “Fly,” “Every Morning” and “When It’s Over,” tunes that still get radio airplay nearly a decade after their release. “I’m influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys and the Sex Pistols, bands that don’t have the greatest voices in the world. But there’s something about them as a collective that makes them work,” proclaims McGrath, who has been Sugar Ray’s front man for more than a quartercentury. “And that let me think that I could get on stage and make an ass of myself and sing a few songs.” It’s that mindset that led to McGrath’s discovery in the first place. During his high school days in Newport Beach, California, he attended a party where his favorite band, The Tories, was performing. “The singer didn’t know the words to AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’ and I did, so they let me sing,” remembers McGrath, whose rock-star good looks would lead to him being named People’s Sexiest Rocker in 1998. “I was drunk and I screamed the lyrics, and I dove into the pool when I was done. And Stan [Frazier] and Rodney [Sheppard] thought, ‘If we ever go hard edge, that might be our guy!’” McGrath was that guy when The Tories broke up and re-formed as the Shrinky Dinx in the late ‘80s. The band would eventually change its name to Sugar Ray after signing with Atlantic Records. And nearly a decade

later McGrath and company would strike gold with the insta-classic “Fly,” a song on Sugar Ray’s sophomore album Floored. “I hated it at first ‘cause it was so different than anything we were doing,” recalls McGrath, who retooled the song at the request of a longtime friend. “I rearranged the song, added some vocals. It slowly started taking shape; and then producer David Kahne added his magical touches. And we thought we had something special. But I never knew how big it was going to be!” Following its release in the summer of 1997, “Fly” would become the band’s first massive hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Sugar Ray would release subsequent hits like “Someday,” “Falls Apart” and a cover of Joe Jackson’s “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” “It’s such a blessing still hearing these songs on the radio after all these years, learning what they mean to people and seeing how they react when we perform www.PanacheVue.com

them,” asserts McGrath, who performed for the third straight year at the Eat to the Beat concert series during the 2012 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in Orlando. “I’m honored and humbled to have a few songs that really resonated with people.” But McGrath’s career has taken him beyond music. In 2004, he became the co-host of Extra after a producer noticed his work hosting various VH1 and MTV programs and saw his potential as an entertainment news anchor. “She must’ve really believed in me ‘cause I was learning in front of America,” says McGrath with a laugh. “And they were really tolerant of my learning skills. I remember six months after working on the show I walked into 7/11 and this heavily tattooed guy came up to me. I really thought he was going to punch me in the face! But he said, ‘Dude, you’re getting better. You sucked when you started, but you’re getting good!’” But after a four-year stint at Extra, a gig hosting Don’t Forget the Lyrics! and competing on The Celebrity Apprentice, McGrath’s life would forever change on April 29, 2010, with the birth of Lydon Edward and Hartley Grace, his adorable twins with longtime love Carin Kingsland. “I’m a dad first and foremost, that’s what I do.” says McGrath, who admits he was glad he waited until he was 42 to start a family because he was “pretty selfish” professionally and personally in his 20’s and 30’s. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but the greatest thing I’ve ever done. You get little moments when they’ll look at you, hug you, say they love you. And that’s what it’s about.” This September, McGrath married Kingsland, whom he describes as his best friend and soul mate, at an intimate ceremony at Santa Barbara’s historic San Ysidro Ranch. “It was like the final piece of my personal puzzle,” says McGrath, who has been with Kingsland for 18 years. “I kind of did everything backwards. We started living together first, had kids and then got married. But my life is complete now. We’re a team; we’re a family unit. We got all the craziness out of the way, survived all that. So we’re pretty indestructible at this point!” It’s that sense of completeness that’s now fueling McGrath’s next fire… the recording of a solo album. “It’s helped me be hungry again… to hustle, make music and enjoy life. So I’m just gonna make a Mark McGrath record in 2013, at my own pace. It may have five songs; it may have 15,” announces McGrath, who recorded a duet with Shania Twain on the song “Party for Two.” “The Mark McGrath band will always play Sugar Ray hits. After all, I wrote those songs and sang them. But it’s time to pepper new music into the set.” If McGrath’s determination and commitment to becoming a singer and finding his voice during those early years is any indication, there’s no doubt McGrath will find success as a solo artist. After all, he’s the same artist who gained acclaim singing the lyric “I just wanna fly.” And fly he shall.

t feels like just yesterday I was writing an article for the upcoming Holiday season. First I would like to Thank Panache Vue’ and Nina Stanley who graciously printed the invitation for “the Mansion of the Macabre Suncoast Hospice Charity event” this year. It was a success, and I hope all who could join us had a great time. As always, 100% of the collections went to Hospice. It always amazes me to see the Kid in all of us come out when we experience a fun time. This year the Mansion was included on the Web site of Good Morning America as one of the “Top 7 outrageous Halloween Houses”. I am very proud that we have been recognized for our Charity work and will continue for as long as we can. It

is through the generosity of You that enables The Suncoast Hospice to continue their help during difficult times not only financially but personally also. I would like to “shout out” a Happy Holiday season to all of our readers and wish you all the best for the New year. he holiday season is upon us again and parties, planning and cooking are all on the agenda. We get so busy that we tend to stick to our daily hair and make-up regimen simply because we’re short on time. Let this be the time of year that you allow yourself to try something different and experiment with new looks for holiday functions. Don’t allow the stress that comes along with the holidays add up -- have some fun with your style! There are a variety of looks in hair and makeup that can be perfect for a get-together and easier than you think. Many of the events we attend are more formal and therefore our look needs to transition from daytime to evening. This can be simple and stressfree if you plan ahead. For example, if you wear your IONS BLICATadd volume and waves as hair straight onTIG most E PUdays, S E R P HT OPYRisIGa popular look for the coming season. Big hair Cthis is back! Incorporating those waves involves using a big-barrel curling iron or hot rollers. And, for those on-the-go ladies, you don’t even have to wash your hair that evening as the natural oils and products from

that morning will give curls more bounce and make them last longer. Also, don’t be afraid to pull out that teasing comb and add some volume to the crown to create additional height. Tease into the first inch of you roots and then smooth the section in front of it to cover the teasing. If you have finer hair and teasing doesn’t always stay, spray the teased area with a bit of hairspray, then smooth over. The key with teasing is not to overdo it. As far as make-up for a holiday evening goes, play up your eyes by adding a bit more shadow. If you prefer a more natural or nude look on the eyes, play up the lips by adding a pop of color. Choose a deep berry or red shade for a more dramatic evening look. Don’t be afraid of color, this is the time of year to stand out and find colors to compliment your skin tones. For more tips on new holiday styles or to transition your look from day to evening, schedule an appointment with one of our many talented stylists and makeup artists. Giving Thanks And Giving Back You Get More Than You Give

I

Debbie & Larry Lieberman

love this time of the year when Thanksgiving reminds us to take on an attitude of gratitude. In our busy, stress filled world its necessary and refreshing to stop and appreciate those people and things in our life that make our life better. My loving family, dear friends, loyal and hard working staff and wonderful patients, all give me reason to feel blessed every day. I feel so lucky to have chosen a profession that allows me to use my knowledge and skills to enhance the lives of so many people and the ability to give back to those in need. One of the most rewarding aspects of being in the dental profession is the chance to make a difference in someone’s life. Whether it’s giving someone back their confidence through a new smile or simply letting someone know that their health is important and that we care about them. It makes no difference what profession you are in, there is no greater feeling than helping someone in need and giving back. The expression, “you get far more than you give” really is quite true! Several years ago a colleague of mine asked me and another dentist to help create a dental clinic for underserved and low income adults. Since the creation of Gulf Coast Dental Outreach hundreds of individuals have been given hope and dental care. Seeing the smiles of those we have helped and

volunteering with many other dentists in our community has been a highlight in my life! This past year after reading about a young woman brutally attacked in a domestic violence incident, myself and several other dentists began treatment to help restore Melissa’s smile and self-esteem. After being stabbed 32 times it has been a joy helping Melissa get back joy in her life. Now an advocate for The Haven, Melissa says she is “thankful and grateful for all of the doctors who helped to rebuild her smile and her life.” Giving back is a family affair. My wife, Debbie has a passion for children. She regularly mentors young, at risk girls and has devoted most of her energy to the Pace Center for Girls. The reward of giving girls a positive role model is a wonderful result of all the time she spends with them. Whether it’s through your religious organization, place of business, professional organization or on your own, I urge you to consider giving back. The gift of your time is priceless and brings many rewards back to you. My wife, Debbie and I wish you a joyous and healthy holiday season! Larry Lieberman, DDS

With a rapidly growing list of consignors who bring in designer and contemporary “threads”, her small shop is chock full of fabulous merchandise at a fraction of what style savvy ladies would spend at the mall or the designers’ stores. A little off the “boutique row” path, Fresh Threads Designer Consignment is located in the quaint neighborhood of Palma Ceia on S Macdill between Euclid and Wallcraft. In addition to building their inventory from fashion forward local residents, Fresh Threads receives consignment items from out of state and has ties with fashion stylists and traditional high end boutiques and spas in the Tampa Bay community. A generous portion of their inventory arrives new with original tags; making it a great buy at often 1/3 off retail and a wise choice for gift giving. What makes this Fresh Threads different than most consignment boutiques is that Juli and her staff appreciates and support local designer’s goods and vintage handbags and jewelry. One of their best selling categories is repurposed vintage jewelry from a local designer. Juli made the choice to step outside the box with “designer” when she took over the business back in 2010. A caring, casual, encouraging person, Juli Halifax is a new mom, wife, entrepreneur and owner of a gem of a consignment boutique in South Tampa. She’s that person you meet who makes you feel like you’ve known her for a long time or will welcome you in her boutique as though you are family. She takes the time to know what you like, what you want, and what you need. She has passed along that motto to her staff and it shows. Juli is a new mom to little Gavin, her son who was born at less than 24 weeks gestation and weighing 1.5 lbs. And although it was a very rough road to getting him well, he is home, healthy and thriving. She currently balances her time with her son, his care, being in the shop part time and working on social media, attending networking events and advertising from home. For enjoyment, Juli enjoys consignment and thrift shopping and dining at other small businesses, attending local festivals, traveling and spending time with her family. She is also working on a children’s grieving journal and hopes to have it published in early 2013.

other women. Women like to have one of- a-kind-items and we often like to know the story behind something we buy. Oftentimes, Fresh Threads will be able to tell you that the Louis Vuitton handbag they have was purchased in France by an attorney who treated herself to a special gift for her birthday or that the Jimmy Choo shoes were one lady’s first big purchase she ever made for herself but they hurt her so she could not wear them. Fresh Threads offers select items for sale on their website and fans snap up freshly posted merchandise by commenting “sold” or calling to purchase. They are launching an ebay store January 1st as well to reach buyers on an international level. Another thing about Juli and Fresh Threads is that they are involved in the community. Giving is a big part of the business model. Their tag line is “consign for a cause”. Every month, bags of unsold, unwanted or donated merchandise is offered up to local charities in support of women in need. In addition, they find creative ways to give back like auctioning items, donating a portion of profit and conducting their prom dress drive every spring. November 2012

hen I ask patients to point to their hip, I get a variety of locations. Some point to their buttock area, some to the outside part of their thigh, and some to their groin. Buttock pain is often due to spine problems such as osteoarthritis of the spine or disc problems such as a herniated disc in the spine. Pain on the outside of the thigh is typically due to hip bursitis, inflammation of the bursa Jennifer L. Cook, M.D. sac on the outside of the hip. True hip pain manifests itself as deep groin pain which can extend down the front of the thigh to the knee. The most common cause of this type of pain is osteoarthritis, or wear and tear changes of the hip joint itself. Osteoarthritis of the hip can range from mild to severe and accompanying symptoms can vary as well. Mild pain can often be controlled with anti-inflammatory medications. These can either be over the counter (non-prescriptive) or require the prescription of a doctor. When taken on a daily basis, these medicines can help to keep the inflammation associated with arthritis to a minimum, thus reducing pain. More progressive arthritis can interfere with one’s ability to walk or participate in sports such as golf. A course of physical therapy may be helpful to strengthen the muscles around the hip, thus taking the force off the damaged hip joint and relieving pain. Sometimes, a cane or walker is needed to minimize the stress across the joint. Cortisone, a concentrated dose of anti-inflammatory medicine, can be injected directly into the damaged hip joint under image guidance. This medicine can provide months of relief of pain, allowing individuals to return to activities in a pain free manner and can be repeated several times a year as needed. In severe arthritis, often the only cure is hip replacement surgery. This surgery removes the worn out hip joint and replaces it with artificial components. Only you and your doctor can determine the etiology of your pain and the treatment regimen that is best for you! Jennifer L. Cook, M.D.

It’s Not Just Belly Fat

A

lmost one out of every two adults in the US have, or are on their way to developing one of the most devastating and costly medical problems of our time. According to the CDC, in 2010 44% of the adult population had pre-diabetes or diabetes. Diabetes is directly associated with a high risk of stroke, heart disease, and hypertension. It is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic limb amputation and new cases of blindness. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the US. The American Diabetes Association estimates the total cost of diagnosed diabetes to be $174 billion. One out of every five dollars spent on healthcare costs is used to treat and care for someone with diabetes. Diabetes is a medical condition that occurs as a direct consequence of progression of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is an inflammatory condition where abnormal elevated levels of blood insulin and glucose are manifested which results in thousands of biochemical cellular reactions that ultimately lead to disease. Genetically there are many who are predisposed to the likelihood of developing insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. The “switch” to bring about this condition must still be turned on in the genes. The causes that turn on and trigger insulin resistance are visceral adiposity or “belly fat”, lack of exercise, chronic stress, inflammation, smoking and a high glycemic diet with processed foods. The likelihood of having insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus is 75% higher in a man with a waist size greater than 34 inches when compared to a 32 inch waistline. It is doubled at 36 inches and tripled at 40 inches. Similarly, women with a 36 inch waist have 5 times the likelihood of having diabetes compared to a woman with a 26 inch waist. The risk of developing diabetes when looking at a BMI of 24 is 4 times higher for persons with a BMI ~29 and 6 times higher for BMI of 31. While there are many treatments for diabe-

tes including many types of oral medications and insulin, it is not uncommon to see a progression of excess weight and the development of other medical problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease, even in those patients who follow the traditional recommended diabetic diet and that take their medication. The reason for the challenge in controlling and eradicating diabetes is in the cause of it – insulin resistance. While it may sound oversimplified, it is now known that

César A. Lara, M.D. The origin of the problem is inflammation, which is rooted in the transformation and development of toxic fat cells in our bodies. It is no surprise then to recognize the tremendous opportunity that is evident by addressing the root of the problem by empowering our patients to take control of their health and shift their thoughts to focus on “life style modification”, where the daily nutrition will directly impact the inflammatory condition, and where, through weight loss, the toxic fat can be eradicated. This can alleviate the need for medications, or at the very least, decrease their amounts.

The New England Journal of Medicine highlighted a study of over 3000 patients with pre-diabetes . One group was given standard medication which resulted in a reduction in the progression of diabetes at 4 years by 31%. The second group used no medicine but focused on lifestyle change. That group lost 6% of their body weight and had a 58% reduction in the progression of disease. That is nearly twice the reduction of the group that was treated with medication. In my opinion, the medical literature has an abundance of support and I see it in my daily experience with our patients. Changing to a low carbohydrate diet, where you avoid refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, rice and any other white carbohydrates (except cauliflower) and avoid sugars, including high fructose corn syrup, desserts , sweets and diet and regular sodas directly impacts the outcome of those with diabetes, such that many patients can totally eliminate their medications as they shed excess weight. Your nutritional plan needs to include complex carbohydrates like vegetables and whole grains balanced with adequate amounts of protein and good fats. Commercial plans like Atkins and the Mediterranean Diet are different but both have good clinical evidence to support successful outcomes in those who follow them. While it is evident that diabetes is a devastating condition, it is also evident that as we take responsibility for our own health, we learn and understand that what we eat and experience does directly impact our health; whereby each of us has the power through our own commitment to ourselves to change that condition and instead, experience improved energy and brain function. May this Thanksgiving be a time of reflection and appreciation of where we are and may it also empower us with the vision to appreciate and make the best of what each of us has and propel us to make a difference in our lives and in those around us. He uses traditional art-making techniques to build up his images through layering of gesso, underdrawing, painting and varnish applied onto wood panel supports. The results are subtle works of detail and expressive quality that engaged the viewer.

BEFORE

N

ever before, in my decade as an advanced facial injector, have I witnessed one show strike fear into the hearts of so many. At least once a day, a new patient, taking the leap into the wonderful world of facial injectables, utters the words, “I’m not going to look like a ‘real housewife’ am I?” While most people can’t afford to look that ridiculous, what they are really saying is, “I don’t want to look unnatural, unbalanced or disproportionate”. A significant portion of my practice is dedicated to correcting this kind of work, usually performed by less artistic injectors with a limited repertoire. There are two major forces at the heart of this problem. The human eye is designed to enhance lines and edges. So when we suddenly find ourselves beginning to look older, it is easy to attribute the problem to that which our eye is most easily drawn to. The second issue is that the injectable companies are only allowed to advertise and train in FDA approved uses of their products. “Off label” uses are at the discretion of the injector (preferably experienced, artistic, and comfortable with advanced techniques). The unfortunate result is patients seeking a quick fix for these new edges, coupled with too many “one-trick pony” injectors. I am here to tell you that there is so much more going on in the face than what most patients ask for, and there is so much more that can be done than what most injectors are doing! This is the audience participation part: Get a mirror and a photograph of yourself

from at least ten years ago. (Note: No matter how critical you may be about your appearance, someday you will wish you could again look like you do right now!) Now, armed with a mirror, a photograph, and an open mind: Look at the surface of your skin. Notice texture, color variation, pores, lines, wrinkles, thinning, dryness, crepeiness. Topical creams, microdermabrasion, peels, IPL, or laser resurfacing can improve superficial changes. Next, assess your skin’s laxity. Non-surgical devices can tighten the skin and/or deeper tissues. Before thinking that your case is hopeless without “going under the knife”, talk with a talented injector about non-surgical options which may postpone surgery or enhance your overall outcome if surgery is chosen. Beware of promises that seem too good to be true. They usually are. Now let’s investigate the gradual changes in the shape and contour of your face. Do any of these apply to you? • Widest part of face shifted from eye/cheek to mouth/jowl area. • Forehead more bony. • Temples hollowing • Flattening of outer edge of eyebrow ridge. • Hollowing, grooves, or bags under eyes. • Areas of irregular contour when following the cheekbone from midface to hairline. • Hollowing above or below the cheekbone making it sharper. • Sunken area in front of the ears making ears more prominent.

AFTER

• Sagging earlobes. • Nose becoming sharper, down turning tip. Bump(s) on the nose becoming more noticeable. • Hollowing/shadowing around the nose. • Area above upper lip becoming flatter, longer, without definition. • Loss of lip edge definition. • Downturned corners of the mouth. • Lips less plump, dryer appearing, turning inward. • Horizontal shadowing or creasing between lower lip and chin. • Jowling. Loss of jawline definition. The point of this exercise is to give a better picture of how, globally, our faces change over time. A “little-of-this-and-little-of-that” approach will give the most natural results, and the good news is that all the items listed above can be addressed non-surgically by a talented injector. Go on a spy mission. Find out where the good (and bad) work is being done. Make appointments and don’t feel obligated. Ask the office staff what they have had done, especially if they look like they haven’t. Does the injector appear to be a member of the one-syringe-too-many club? Run! Finally, don’t set yourself up for disappointment by thinking that you can or should look twenty again. Unachievable goals pave the road to overdone. Instead, throw away the magnifying mirror and remember, a smile will do more to enhance your appearance than any procedure money can buy.

Home for Thanksgiving!

I

n our family, Thanksgiving is the 5 star holiday! Now it could very well be the fabulous feast we enjoy but I’d like to think a small part of it is all about the feelings of warmth, hope and thanks that we enjoy at our table. Since it is sort of a scientific fact that our moods and general wellbeing are greatly influenced by our surroundings, we really should emphasize our holiday house trimmings, keeping them well in tune with our home’s décor and creating a festive feeling throughout. Nothing says home and hearth like organic trimmings- so look to your grocer’s shelves for your tabletop arrangements. Use with French ribbons, raffia, or jute and stage with pottery, ceramic accessories or even family photos! For instance, a home painted and accessorized in burgundy and green would work well with gourds in shades of beige and green, mixed with fresh cranberries, green apples, and pomegranates. A home in warm Mediterranean colors begs for orange pumpkins, golden squash and red apples. If your environs are done in brown, silver and turquoise, pile on the pine cones, paint some gourds silver, add some ribbon in shades of turquoise….well you get the idea. Go big, go beautiful and make it bountiful! Fresh flowers are optional but nothing sets a mood like candlelight. Clustered they can create the warm ambience of a fireplace. At the supper table, use them individually at each place setting, on risers or in candelabras for drama, or on mirrored surfaces for added reflection. Drape your tables with cloths, use placemats or runners. Cut yardage from your fabric store can create table coverings, allowing for unfinished edges by tying ends up at the legs. You can also swirl cloth in the center, even covering makeshift risers, rather than using typical runners. Placemats can be customized laminations of photos or fall foliage. Dining chairs can be festooned with fabric or ribbons, adding whimsical touches of floral to the chair backs. While dressing the table, don’t over-

something to be grateful for, a moment to remember, or a wish to make. Pass the list while your guests are visiting before dinner and ask them each to add one of their own to your Wishes, Memories and Thanks List and then share the list with a toast at the table! Or write your own Thoughts of Thanksgiving, make copies, roll into small scrolls, tie your place cards to the scrolls with a ribbon and then share your thoughts by reading as a prayer. Finally don’t overlook garnishing your serving trays and platters with fall flowers, leaves, etc. and coordinating your napkins. Then dim your lights, put a flame to your candles, add some soft music to the background and smile. Your guests are sure to know just how special they are! Cheryl Perotti Fountainhead Design

Wedge your place cards in pinecones; hang them from a small bundle of twigs and dried flowers, small gourds or miniature pumpkins, or a keepsake candle. Write your guest’s name on a personal greeting card, or add it to the napkin arrangement with cord or ribbon. Since family holidays are all about tradition and togetherness, a lovely way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to begin a list with

t is hard not to be nostalgic around the holidays. To me, celebrations center on family and close friends. As everyone gathers together to enjoy good food and good times, the kitchen inevitably becomes the hub for activity. It really is the heart of the home. It is no wonder that builders, realtors and prospective home owners focus on the kitchen. Take a good look at your kitchen. Does it reflect current trends in addition to your personal style? Do your cabinets maximize storage space and assist in organization? Are they designed in such a way that they facilitate work flow and entertaining? Are you proud to show them off to your family and friends? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, it’s time that you call A-1 Cus-

tom Cabinets for a free in-home consultation. We can show you ways to update your cabinetry or completely overhaul your kitchen for transforming results. Because I am blessed to be married to a talented cabinet maker, I thankfully answered “yes” to all the above questions. I’m looking forward to sharing the joy of the holidays with those I hold dear and having my kitchen overflow with love. While others are out shopping till they drop, I’ll be dropping to my knees to thank God for all His wonderful blessings. To all our great friends, wonderful customers, and customers yet to be, A-1 Custom Cabinets offers our sincerest gratitude and extends warmest wishes for a happy holiday season.

Danger-Free & Delicious First Course: Skip the fatty salad dressing by opting for Butternut Squash and Pumpkin Soup instead. One cup of pumpkin is full Vitamin A and C, and contains more potassium than a banana – it also makes this soup thick and creamy. Simply cook onions, carrots, leeks, celery, and garlic in ½ cup of chicken broth, then add the rest of the broth with the pumpkin and squash. Cook until the cubed squash is tender, and use an immersion blender or food processor to puree the mixture. Whisk in yogurt and milk, and add the cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Serve with a dollop of yogurt and a sprinkling of chives for extra Wow-factor. Butternut Squash and Pumpkin Soup Ingredients: 2 Cups low-sodium chicken broth ½ cup chopped onions 1 medium celery stalk, chopped ½ cup carrot, chopped ½ cup leek, chopped 2 large garlic cloves 1 ¾ cup Butternut squash 1 cup pumpkin ½ cup plain nonfat yogurt ½ cup skim milk 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg 2 Tb fresh chives (for garnish) Side Dish: Sweet Potato & Cranberry Hash is packed with anti-oxidants and fiber. To get the full benefit of the beta-carotene in sweet potatoes, you actually have to eat them with a little fat, which is why we put butter and olive oil in this recipe. We use whole cranberries because of how the nutrients in the complete berry work together to protect the cardiovascular system and liver. Preheat your oven to 350 and roast your sweet potatoes for 15 minutes (they’ll still feel slightly firm). Let them cool to room temperature, then chill overnight in the refrigerator so they’ll hold together better in the hash. The next day, cut them into 1-inch pieces and set aside. Melt 2 Tbs of butter in a frying pan and sauté the apple cubes until they start to brown and caramelize. Add the olive oil and stir in the green onion and cranberries, stirring until the onion wilts. Stir in the cinnamon and pumpkin spice, and add the sweet potatoes – careful not to mash them. Serve hot. Ingredients for Cranberry-Orange Sweet Potato Hash 3 orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, peeled (about 2lbs) ½ Tb unsalted butter ½ Tb olive oil 1 Fuji apple, peeled and cut into ½” cubes ½ cup sliced green onion 1 cup fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp pumpkin pie spice ¼ tsp kosher salt (plus more to taste) Zest of 1 orange Round out this meal with healthy turkey and green beans, and you might even have room for pumpkin pie. Happy Thanksgiving! PANACHE VUE’ 33

A Fishing-Girl’s Go-To: Marina Shores Marina – BY TAMMY LEVENT

inding good-times is one-part knowing where to look, and two-parts bringing the party yourself. When a friend suggested I head out on a fishing trip with one of her hot angler acquaintances my only thought was, Ten bucks says this afternoon ends up with me taking off my top. I was not wrong. Within an hour I was indeed topless and reeling in the catch of the day, with a mixed drink on one hand, and fishing pole in the other. Before the sun set, despite several margaritas, one thought was clearer than the water we were cruising: It was time to find the best hot-spots for anglers and their friends. A tip led me to The Marina at Marina Shores, a boater’s paradise in Virginia Beach described as a “Premier Lifestyle Marina.” I was hooked. Pun intended. The marina is located on Long Creek just off the Lynnhaven Inlet, and minutes from the Boardwalk on Virginia Beach, so even if you’re without a boat, you should point your sails this way.

RESTAURANTS, RUM, AND RELAXATION

Hungry water-lovers at The Marina at Marina Shores can start the day off right at 757 Crave with a Red Velvet Belgian Waffle and a mimosa, enjoyed al fresco with a view of the boats floating by. Continue the party into the afternoon by playing barfly at Surf Rider steakhouse until you feel like you’re floating yourself (whether or not your feet are on a deck). If you need to sober up, I highly recommend their famous crab cakes for lunch. Relaxing is a must when you’re in seaside foodheaven, and the marina’s Pool Club doesn’t require

34 PANACHE VUE’

you to buy a boat in order to recline in the water – just a membership. Invite yourself onto the tanning deck, where drinking in rays of sunshine is required (but fullcovered clothing is not). All new patio furniture in coral, daffodil and sea-blue brighten the area surrounding the large pool, which overlooks the Marina. Watch people busy on their boats while you practice the art of doing nothing with your gal-pals, or make conversation with a good-looking poolgoer over a piece of literature you picked up from the on-site book-swap library. When it’s time to put the books down and get wet, the large pool offers several depths - the deep water covers long enough stretches for lap swimming should you want to show off your breast stroke, and the shallow area encourages wearing a floppy sun hat and shades while cooling off with gossip. All in all, The Marina at Marina Shores is the sort of place I’d want to gather my girlfriends for weekend sunsets on a handsome captain’s boat with a bottle of wine, and endless afternoons on the pool deck with adult beverages on standby. Virginia Beach is known for resorts, which means tourists… which means partying 24/7. Hit the Marina during the day, and the town at night. Just don’t forget to bring the party with you, wherever you go. Tammy Levent CEO of Elite Travel Tammy@EliteTravelGroup.net www.EliteTravelGroup.net An American Express Agency November 2012

very little girl loves to play dress up with her mother’s clothes and jewelry. And many little girls pose in front of the mirror and dream about being a fashion model and walking the runways of Paris, Milan and NYC. Bobbie Y. Kingsbury was bitten by the fashion bug early on. Today she is known all over the area as The Fashion Authority. Bobbie is a fashion designer and wardrobe stylist. Bobbie started her business in the fall of 2006, but fashion has always been her passion! Growing up, Bobbie spent hours scrutinizing Vogue and Glamour magazines, dreaming about traveling to the fashion capitals of Paris, Milan and NYC. As her talent developed, Bobbie gave style advice to friends and loved ones; she advised them on how to put together their wardrobes and as to what styles looked good on their body types. She’d been sewing for many years but became frustrated with commercial patterns. She knew she could create her own fashion designs and patterns so she enrolled in the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) for professional training. Bobbie has been sewing clothes for 17 years and designing clothes for six years. What sets Bobbie apart from other fashion designers is that she focuses on easy care, natural fibers ~ clothes that are universally flattering to every woman. Bobbie’s mission is to “make the world a more beautiful place, one woman at a time.” Just because something is in style doesn’t mean that it is flattering to each figure. Roughly, statistics for women’s bodies indicate that approximately 23% of women are pear shaped, 17% are apple shaped, 50% are rectangle shaped and 9% are hour glass shaped. Because of these different body types, not all clothes look the same on all women. And some styles are much more flattering to particular body types than others. It takes talent and skill to recognize what works for a woman and what doesn’t, and Bobbie takes great pleasure in helping women realize what is most flattering to their figures. Bobbie’s training in draping for design helps her to know a woman’s silhouette. If a client can’t find

www.PanacheVue.com

what she is looking for in the stores, Bobbie can design it. Bobbie can also do special occasion clothes, but she specializes in creating clothes that women will live in and love. Name brands that Bobbie compares her style to are Ella Moss, Banana Republic and 3 Dots. Some other brands she admires most are Free People, L.A.M.B., Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim. As a wardrobe stylist, Bobbie will go through a client’s closet with her professional eye, organize the wardrobe, and provide style advice to her client. Since Bobbie is a skilled seamstress, she can also make repairs and alterations to her clients’ items. On top of her busy work schedule, Bobbie is very involved in giving back to the community. She volunteered on the planning board of the Florida Fashionistas, which is the group that brought Wine, Women and Shoes to Tampa to benefit the Children’s Dream Fund in 2010 and 2011. Bobbie was the corporate sponsorship chair in 2010 and the official spokesperson in 2011, appearing on television to promote the event. Since 2007, she has been on the Passion Committee for the American Heart Association after losing her mother to heart disease. In 2008, she was a chosen designer in the Red Dress Project and her original design was featured

at the annual heart association luncheon. Bobbie’s most memorable experience as a designer is her involvement with the Red Dress Project, where she was paired with a “survivor” who served as inspiration for the design. Bobbie loved the entire process and said, “I got to meet women who are still friends of mine to this day.” Bobbie is a single mother of three beautiful children, Seth, 25, Dalia, 16, and Charlie, 13. Dalia and Charlie are both on the principal’s honor roll and are very involved in their school. Of her many accomplishments, Bobbie was recognized this year as one of the Best Mom’s of the Bay by the Ryan Nece Foundation. Bobbie’s hobbies include sewing, reading and volunteering in the community. As a Massachusetts native, she is a huge New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. Bobbie owes her success to her mother, who loved fashion, had style and was full of grace. When she passed away, Bobbie made a vow to herself that she would live her dreams and make every day count. “There are no second chances and this life isn’t a dress rehearsal. I want to see my dreams become a reality.” For more information email bobbie@thefashionauthority.com or call 813-312-6322

Equestrian Chic

Saddle Up in Style in This Season’s Triple Crown Trend BY TOM CASTAÑEDA

T

here’s absolutely no horsing around when it comes to this fall’s hottest trend: equestrian-inspired clothing. No, no! Not the garments you’d spot on jockeys at the Preakness Stakes or Kentucky Derby. This season’s tweed, plaid and herringbone offerings have been given a modern update to add a little extra (horse) power to your wardrobe. From oh-so-brash britches to bold boots, designers like Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren have galloped out of the gate with riding-inspired pieces in their fall/winter collections. Revamped this season, these haute-to-trot styles are bringing that classic English country style into the mainstream like never before. Style-savvy celebrities like Rachel Bilson, Zoë Saldaña and Charlize Theron have already incorporated the trend into their own looks, sporting tailored tweed jackets, sleek riding pants, equestrian-style silk accents and bridle-like accessories. But it’s Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge who has mastered the trend like no one else while demonstrating just how chic and stylish one can be when taking the (fashion) reins with timeless, riding-inspired pieces. So if you’re ready to ride high this season, here are some ways to incorporate the equestrian-inspired trend into your wardrobe:

HORSE PLAY

Looking to try the country chic trend, but don’t want to wear cinched-waist jackets or riding pants? Well, here’s a simple solution. Look for www.PanacheVue.com

whimsical and quirky horse prints! No matter whether they’re large or small, those stallionpatterned styles can be found on scarves, blouses and sweaters. They’re a fun, tonguein-cheek way to get that equestrian vibe while staying on track. Just make sure to simplify the rest of your outfit so you don’t take the look overboard.

ries. Léger, famous for his ability to enhance women’s bodies with his impressive bandage dresses, sent his models down the runway with bridle- and harness-like belts and fasteners over his sleek sheaths. So if you’d like to add a little edge to your look, consider a little horse riding leather. You’ll look fashion forward while emphasizing your waistline!

THE LITTLE PRINTS

THE DARK SIGHT

Saddle up! Some of this season’s standout prints seem to be closely related to horse riding, including saddle and stirrup leathers, bridle accessories and equestrian buckles. Designers like Tommy Hilfiger have found inspiration in the traditional looks of equestrian riders to craft good-looking garments with a modern touch.

BRIDLE PARTY

One of this year’s most dramatic equine-inspired looks comes from Hervé Léger. During his fall/winter runway shows, the French designer added some serious edge to his classic cuts with some equestrian-inspired accesso-

This season’s equestrian-like styles appear to be more than just sleek and artful. They’re also darker. Literally! The hautest horse riding looks can be found in deep maroons, chestnut, dark blues and olive. So that means you don’t have to wear the traditional black and white to have you riding high into the new year. So whether you opt to wear a bridled belt that accentuates your waist or a chic harness-print dress, there’s no doubt you’ll be off to the races in this season’s equestrian-like styles. Now giddy on up and giddy on out in high style!
