K

ISSING MAY NOT BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

V

alentine’s Day with its cheesy Hallmark cards and roadside flower stands is a great day to honor and cherish the one you love. In my house, bringing home a romantic card, flowers and delicious chocolate is almost a guarantee to receive some warm hugs and kisses. Those loving kisses, however, may not only be sharing your affection with your sweetheart – they have serious potential to also share the harmful bacteria that causes and spreads periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an oral condition which involves the breakdown of the structures which support the teeth such as the bone surrounding each tooth and the fibers which anchor the teeth to the gums. Currently, it is felt that the start and progression of periodontal disease (also known as periodontitis) is determined by the body’s response to infection caused by bacteria in plaque. Research has been done investigating whether or not the bacteria which cause periodontal disease can be passed between people through kissing, or among family members, much like the way the flu or a cold can be spread from individual to individual.

L

Adults with periodontal disease may indeed be a source of infection of these bacteria to their partners or family members. However, it is important to recognize that a person may have these bacteria in his/her mouth, but not develop periodontal disease. How can you prevent developing periodontal disease if your partner has it? You, your partner and family members can: 1) Practice better oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly after meals and before bed. By reducing the amount of plaque you leave on your teeth and gums, you also reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth. 2) Seeing your dental hygienist who can alert you to potential problems sooner rather than later. Our hygienist’s, Laura and Marla recommend many service and product options that help this problem. In addition, for over 10 years our office has used lasers to treat and heal gum disease. The first in our area to use this state of the art technology, we have enabled many patients to avoid the “cut and suture” traditional gum surgery and replace it with a faster, more comfortable and long lasting laser procedure. If you notice any of the following you may be at risk of having some form of periodontal disease: bad taste in your mouth, bad breath that doesn’t

go away, itchy or bleeding gums, loose teeth, pus coming out of your gums or a change in the fit of your denture. As I’ve mentioned before, periodontal disease can affect not only your dental health but medical condition as well. I urge you to take this disease seriously and get treatment just as you would for a medical disease. It is my wish that you have many years of healthy, sweet and loving kisses with all of those you care about. Larry Lieberman, DDS

love Is In The Air

Health

“Love is in the air A sentiment that is very familiar. Being the month of February the world seems to rotate around the theme of Love. Whether it is love of a sweetheart, wife, husband, children, extended family or friends, this month has a very strong take to it. Wouldn’t it be great if we all could have this feeling all year long not just the month of February. Being able to constantly have this feeling of joy to our fellow man is a most amazing thought. Believe it or not we can, it only takes “us” to change it. That’s right going out of our way to help others in need. Putting someone ahead of ourselves in the things we do or think. How much do you think this “idea” could change our world. My bet would be it would be a much better place. I believe it’s time we all take these matters into our own hands and not wait for others to go first. Spread the love not only on Valentine’s Day or even the entire month of February but always.

Journey…

Health

To Be The Best You

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step – Lao Tzu

Many people see the path of weight management and creating lasting change in life as somewhat challenging. Feelings of fear, insecurity, and inadequacy can creep into the mind and heart, leaving some people unable to move forward toward addressing the issues they wish to change. I recognized early that in order for my team, my practice, and myself to help patients create their life of excellence, we were going to have to take an active role as partners on our patients’ journeys. It would be essential for us to not only educate patients from the beginning about what to expect, but also to have a continued role of educating and motivating them every step of the way. At some point in our life, we have all been faced with creating new behaviors by changing existing habits. Whether it’s weight loss, smoking cessation, starting an exercise routine or committing to personal enrichment, this time of transition holds for you challenge and uncertainty. To maximize success during a given period of change in your life, there are a few key elements which will help:

•Education – Learn as much as you can

about the journey ahead. Speak with people who have been successful in making the same transition. Speak to professionals in the field, read literature, visit online focus groups, absorb as much as you can about what to expect and how to successfully overcome the challenges that you may face. This will help in alleviating fear and anxiety about the unknown. It is also one of the reasons we spend so much time in our practice working to educate patients each and every step of the way. Then continue to research and learn as you progress along your journey towards the life you desire.

www.panachevue.com

•Motivation – Identify in the beginning

why you are seeking this change. Is it for better health, to improve mental clarity, spend more time with your loved ones, set an example for your children, to return to activities you used to participate in - whatever your reasons, identify what your motivations are. They will serve as a focusing tool when you are facing moments of doubt and will help realign you with your true path to living the life you desire on the other side of your journey of change.

•Support

– This key to success should never be overlooked. No matter what journey you are facing, you should not be alone. Rest assured, that there are others in the world who have walked, or are walking, the same path. By finding support through formal groups and other resources, you are increasing your ability to successfully manage the obstacles and transition that exists between who you are today and who you want to be. We provide our patients with online resources of guidance and inspiration, recipes, nutritional, supplements and various support groups to ensure that every tool possible is being provided to assist in this challenging journey of change. As I tell all of my family, friends and patients… CONGRATULATIONS on taking the first steps to create change in your life! Change is certainly inevitable and can be a beautiful and enriching process. However, no matter how daunting the journey ahead may seem, do not underestimate the power you have within you and the momentum you can gain from properly embarking on your journey. Leverage the guidance of education, the strength of motivation and the stability of support as you move every step closer towards being THE BEST YOU!

TAMPA AREA DOCTORS RELIEVING PATIENTS OF NECK AND BACK PAIN WITH STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY With his state of the art DRX9000, Dr. Carl Conforti, DC is changing the lives of people who experience the following:

Q: What is the DRX9000? A: The DRX 9000 is a state of the art machine that allows us to perform spinal decompression in the comfort of our offices. Q: What kind of conditions do you treat with your spinal decompression? A: The DRX9000 allows us to treat quite a few conditions. We have both neck and back decompression, so we treat for neck pain, sciatic pain, lower back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, bulging and herniated discs, and many other injuries. Q: How do you determine if someone is a candidate for your treatment process? A: In our candidate assessment we review MRI’s, x-rays, and we utilize our computerized spinal exam (EMG) to evaluate the problem. After reviewing all of the tests, we discuss medical history and the complexity of the issues.

• Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless nights • Back or neck injury as the result of an accident • Numbness in your hands or toes

Q: So once you decide that someone is a candidate, what can they expect next? A: Once we have determined that someone is a candidate for the spinal decompression treatment, we lay out a treatment plan and start treatment as soon as possible. Many times we can start the patient that week, and sometimes even that day! With the treatment plan in mind, we start the spinal decompression and our other treatments that we use alongside the spinal decompression to ensure that our patients get optimal results!

• Degenerative disc disease • Herniated and bulging discs • Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery • Spinal stenosis

Q: Do the treatments hurt? A: No, not at all. In fact, many of our patients fall asleep during the treatment process. Others choose to read books and listen to music. It is actually a very relaxing treatment.

The treatment process does not involve any surgery or painful recovery and provides a PERMANENT solution to neck and back pain to patients throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Q: What is your success rate with this treatment? A: As opposed to traditional surgery, which is about 50% success, our treatment process is successful over 80% of the time. Our careful attention to specific needs and our full in office treatment process allows our patients to be back enjoying their lives pain free and full of life!

Drinking. OK, not like that! What I mean is taking time out on a regular basis to enjoy a glass of wine, (or in Roger’s case, a Manhattan), a nice meal – whatever you enjoy – with your partner. We work together all day long, but we’re only talking business. At night or on the weekend it’s nice to sit down together over a nice meal and spend some time on stuff that doesn’t get any attention during the workday. I’ll be honest, sometimes we talk business, but it’s different. The pace is leisurely and there aren’t dozens of other things competing for our attention. It’s extremely valuable to have that time to reconnect after moving at lightning speed all day.

Humor – laugh at each others jokes even if you’ve heard them many times before Respect- each other Honor your independence – even though you’re a couple you each still have unique qualities Be on the same page raising kids- never let them see you fight Be kind to each other My grandparents married for over 60 years saidmake sure your spouse comes first – the kids leave and it’s just you two. Have fun and find fun things to do together- i took up golf and now we love having golf dates together.

Suzanne & Roger Perry - Datz

Debbie & Dr. Larry Lieberman

You have to listen very carefully when your wife is talking to you… then you have to figure out what they actually mean…because it’s never exactly what you heard. You need to listen more than you talk…even if your tongue swells up in your head. Put the toilet seat down…happy wife. Remember you married your husband and then had kids, when they move out you have to remember why you married him. Never go to bed mad…have sex instead. It’s was easier to stay married then to kill him…but I could have gotten out in under 30 years. The truth though is that he still makes me weak in the knees and he still makes me laugh. JoAnn & Mike Rooney

“A solid friendship built on mutual respect, honest communication, and trust is the foundation for a happy relationship. That doesn’t mean perfect agreement on every issue but it does mean compromise and accepting different points of view... celebrating your common ground, yet embracing your differences, as well. And of course, never stop making time for fun, special moments, and the small gestures that sometimes speak the loudest.” Jay & Dana Martinez

Celebrated on 14th February every year, Valentine’s Day sees people giving gifts to those who are special to them, with their romantic interest being on the top of the list. Lip augmentation is one of the most misunderstood cosmetic procedures today. There are a large number of really scary lips out there and it has given many people the mistaken impression that if you have anything done to your lips, you will end up with “trout mouth”. The truth of the m a t t e r i s t h a t t h e re a re a l s o a l a r g e number of really well done lips out there as well that those folks weren’t born with, but they look natural and beautiful, so you would never suspect that the owner wasn’t born with them.

What leads people to consider lip augmentation: 1. I have always wanted bigger, poutier lips. 2. I used to have really great lips but they seem to be getting smaller as I get older. 3. My mouth area just looks old and saggy. The mouth is the anchor for the lower face. A youthful, attractive mouth will greatly enhance the appearance of the entire face, but striving for something that is not realistic or balanced, will take away more than it will add. People with naturally smaller lips are at greater risk for “trout mouth” because attempting to add too much volume will push the lips forward and distort the corners, rather than making the lips softer and more rounded. It is often better to sacrifice some size for better shape. People with “smoker’s lines” (even if they aren’t smokers), run a greater risk for “chimp mouth”, because adding volume above

the upper lip in an attempt to stretch out these lines, can, distort the mouth if that area begins to project forward beyond the top of the upper lip, or stretches the lips too far to the sides. Sometimes repeated procedures will cause changes to happen gradually enough that the patient may not be aware that they are beginning to look unnatural, or more often, the lip lines are so disturbing that they are so happy for those to be improved that they don’t notice the unnatural side effects.

As we age, the mouth area begins to flatten and turn inward as the lips themselves lose volume. Balancing the little structural support around the mouth with some subtle definition of the lip edges, with a small increase in softness and volume to the lips themselves, is the best way to enhance the area since this keeps the mouth proportionate and with a natural shape. If you are considering lip augmentation, be sure to find a provider with a proven track record for creating beautiful, natural looking lips. Make sure that all the options and techniques are explained clearly as there are many different products available and many different injection techniques. Just as no two people’s lips are exactly the same, your injector should be able to individually tailor your treatment for optimum results that suit your individual needs and desires.

Photo 3: This patient wanted her upper lip slightly larger and more defined to balance her lower lip. Changes are subtle because her lips, were already attractive.

Photo 4: In this case, lip volume was good but this patient had lost support at the corners of the mouth.

Love At

By Paul Guzzo “If you love me, you’ll eat this leaf,” she said to her high school sweetheart. Stifling a giggle, trying to maintain her serious demeanor, she plucked a dying leaf off the tree branch hanging above the bench they sat upon in his parents’ backyard in New Orleans. He knew this game. He knew she did not seriously believe eating a leaf proved his love. But he also knew that if he did not, she would playfully dig at him for days that he didn’t truly love her. Not wanting to give her that satisfaction, he snatched the leaf from her hand, tore it down the middle, crammed half of it into his mouth, chewed and swallowed, calling her bluff. Moments later, he choked up every piece in a violent fit of coughing. “Ok,” she laughed. “Enough.” She didn’t want him to die trying to prove her wrong, but she also did not want to give him a victory, so she added, “If you TRULY love me, you will hold onto that other piece for the rest of your life.” “We were so cheesy,” laughed 58-year-

dating producers, directors, actors and comedians.” Then, in October 2000, Fagen reached out to her via Classmates.com. It was a simple email, asking how she was doing. “There was one smoke signal,” laughed Shear. “He also gave me his phone number and pager number. I knew this meant he wasn’t married anymore. So I decided to mess with him and asked if he wanted to come see me and when.” Just like the leaf incident, he called her bluff, answered tomorrow and even booked a flight to LA. It was sudden, but Shear was up for it. She was dating someone in LA, but it wasn’t serious. Besides, she wasn’t purposely meeting with Fagen to rekindle first love. She just thought it would be fun to see him. Her boyfriend, however, talked her out of it. He said it was a terrible idea, saying Fagen was probably fat and bald and wore clothes he bought at the Piggly Wiggly,

old worldwide fashion icon, comedian and St. Petersburg resident Rhonda Shear while reminiscing about her high school boyfriend, Van Fagen. “We were typical teenagers. We dated for five years and he was my first love.” Over the 26 years that followed their breakup, a lot changed for her. She was named Miss Louisiana. She was the host of the popular 1980s B-movie television show USA Up All Night, she posed for Playboy twice and she launched a ground breaking comedy career, becoming one of the first women to successfully combine sex appeal with jokes. However, unbeknownst to Shear, one thing never changed – her feelings for her first love. “I had no idea I still had feelings for him,” she said. “I thought about him of course, as would anyone about their first love. You know, you always wonder what they are up to. But I never thought about getting him back. I was a serial dater in Hollywood,

which was a shot at Fagen’s hometown of Fayetteville, Louisiana. Two months, later, however, when she flew to Louisiana to see her mother for Christmas, she asked Fagan to visit her. It wasn’t a date, just a friendly get together of old friends. But Shear said the moment he walked into her mother’s home on December 27, 2000, all the old feelings came back to her. It must have been mutual because later that night they kissed. “It was magic,” giggled Shear like a high school girl with a crush. “He wasn’t like any guy I dated in Hollywood. He was all man. He showed me his house that he built with his own hands, he cooked me dinner and he was a successful businessman. And he wasn’t fat OR bald. Then, on January 11, 2001, just a few weeks later, we eloped. Everyone said we wouldn’t last and I understand why. It was crazy and we did not think it through. But we have proven them wrong.”

cond Sight Shear was not finding steady work in LA, so she agreed to move to Lafayette, where Fagen owned a successful company that created the software for oil rigs. The move was as sloppy as an oil spill. The women in the small town did not accept the ex-Playmate from LA. They thought they were above her. Shear said she was lonely. If her friends needed any proof of how much Fagen loved her, when he realized how unhappy she was, Fagen agreed to sell the company and move elsewhere. “He sold a company he founded and then had to work for someone else,” said Shear.

Paul Guzzo is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker and an accomplished author. His newest book is The Dark Side of Sunshine, a history of Tampa’s infamous people and events. His recent article on a man with Down syndrome who is best friends with Dwayne Johnson was viewed by close to half a million readers in a month. It can be read at www.cigarcitymagazine.com.

Being a small town boy, he was deftly afraid of LA, so they settled on Dallas. They lasted there for just three months. Then they tried San Diego, but they didn’t take to it and only lasted eight months. Finally, she convinced him to try LA. “I was slowly moving him to LA,” she admitted with a sly smile. “He actually loved it. But then work brought us to St. Petersburg.” That work was a company they co-founded, Rhonda Shear Intimates, a fashion line focusing on bras, panties and sleepwear. The company began selling in 2003 and struck a deal with Tampa Bay’s Home Shopping Network soon after. Shear and Fagen moved to the Tampa Bay area in 2005 to be closer to HSN headquarters and urned the company into one of the most successful in its field. Today, the company earns around $73 million in annual revenues from its 2,500 skews and its “Ahh Bra” is the number one bra in the world, selling over 30 million. Shear and Fagen are more than a perfect love match. They are also a perfect business match. She has the celebrity name and the showbiz know how and he has the entrepreneurial knowledge. “It’s been wonderful and it is crazy,” she said. “I mean, I dated guys like Bill Maher and Larry King and Glenn Frey, yet in the end I was meant to be with my first boyfriend from New Orleans. Then we enjoy all this success together. It’s just crazy.” Crazy, or meant to be. After all, Fagen still has that other half of the leaf. “He really did save it all those years,” Shear laughed. “That’s just the kind of guy he is.” Rhonda Shear presents The Rhonda Shear Comedy PJ Party on Saturday, February 16 at the Mahaffey Theater. The event will feature shopping, a fashion show, and stand-up comedy for a full night of fun. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.themahaffey.com.

Trends for

Art & Diane Whitney

2013

Kitchen designs are, by far, the slowest changing trends in home décor. This is due to the fact that they are expensive, time consuming and so invasive to the homeowner. But at A-1 Custom Cabinets, we are seeing a gradual upheaval in the way we specify the kitchen space. Here are some our top recommendations for 2013: Move Toward Modern In 2012 the National Kitchen and Bath Association ranked the “Transitional Style” over “Traditional” for the first time ever in the history of their ranking system. This means more simplified lines and big, open spaces made with gathering in mind. Traditional woods (cherry and maple) are being replaced by Alder, Birch, Walnut and Bamboo. Natural Color Schemes Kitchen design trends are showing a rise in neutral colors with a twist. New natural colors build around greys and greens with a variety of wood finishes. Classic white and black are making a comeback as well. Bright colors are prevalent, but should be reserved for accents. Another trend is to mix wood cabinet finishes and painted finishes, which give an eclectic yet cohesive look.

Hideaway Appliances Most people know that stainless steel appliances are a must-have for kitchen remodels, but there’s also a push toward unusual appliances. Not only does this include ones fronted with the same material as the cabinets, but also an emphasis on hidden appliances. Certain refrigerators, microwaves and dishwashers can be integrated into drawers for a seamless look. All-Over Lighting Good kitchen lighting has become more important over the years. Because the kitchen is the epicenter of the home, lighting should be layered combining general lighting, task lighting and ambient lighting. There is also a big push toward the inclusion of LED’s, which are already popular for under-cabinet lighting. Super Stylish Components 2013 trends will move away from conventional range vents and include a variety of decorative hoods. Ones with built in LED lights can even couple as an island chandelier. Also, don’t overlook the kitchen sink. They are becoming a focal point in updated kitchens. Stainless steel sinks will remain popular, many with new modern designs, but there will also be a variety of stone composite, copper or fireclay sinks to offer smooth, non-porous options that won’t show wear and tear. Glass Backsplashes Luminous, reflective finishes abound in the modern kitchen, and nowhere is this more beautiful than on backsplash walls. Single-sheet, back painted glass with no seams, no grout, and easy maintenance wins on all counts. Its reflective quality gives a polished finish to the kitchen. This could also be achieved with glass tiles, which are a quick and inexpensive way to update your kitchen. unedin Doggie Rescue started in 2006. We ar e a smal l b u t d eter m i n ed g r o u p o f volunteers, driven by our love of dogs, to save them. Knowing that the rescue had to be sustainable to sur vive, it was built on a Co-op model: each adopter is asked to give back so we can save another shelter dog. Dunedin Doggie Rescue is a 501c; www.facebook.com/people/Dogeden-Rescue/1749329026 Panache: Why did you choose this business or line of work? Ken: My significant other, Cathy and I had adopted a dog from a Cat Rescue called Home at Last. She had two dogs of her own, but she always found “room for one more dog” in her home and adopted them out one at a time. She cried her heart out when she gave CJ to us, and we said “we could never do that”. We became close friends with her and after a year of gently prodding us, we took the bait and found “room for one more “in our home and began adopting dogs... one at a time. Within 6 months friends in the community offered to help and it just grew and grew and… Panache: What is your primary role or duty in your company? Ken: Event planner, pseudo veterinarian, food nutritionist. Cathy does the other half, Foster Coordinator, pseudo psychologist and feeder of the Dogs. Panache: What sets you apart from your competition? Ken: Several new concepts to rescue… we are a Co-Op, meaning when you adopt a dog from us the adoption fee is based on how much time you can help the rescue to continue rescuing more dogs. In addition the Co-Op is a community in which the rescue offers several benefits to adopters: Medical and Behavioral support, Free dogs wash and nails at our monthly Suds on Sunday, Dog sitting, and Volunteer Thank You parties. We have a very detailed adoption process… each adopter does three different length trials. Lastly, we are big on educating our adopters about feeding good food to their dogs. .

Panache: What would you be doing now if it weren’t for your business, taking money out of the equation? Ken: Traveling the country in a RV with our dogs. P.S. We are all independently wealthy, not in money of course, but in dog kisses. Panache: What do you do for fun? Ken: Camping with our dogs at Music Fests at Sertoma Youth Ranch Panache: Who or what is most important to you, personally or professionally? Ken: Making a Difference by knowing there are about 500 dogs that would have been put down at a shelter, who are now living with a GREAT Family. Panache: A little secret about you that would shock those who don’t know you! Ken: I used to be BIG into the craft beer movement, from home brewing and President of Dunedin Brewers Guild to Board member of the state’s Brewery Guild and judging beer at competitions as a nationally ranked beer judge. Panache: What are your personal and professional mottos? Ken: More like “sayings” associated with doing rescue work)

“The more Humans I meet the more I like my Pets”, and “Do unto others as Karma will do to you” Panache: When you were five, what was your dream to be when you grew up? Ken: To be just like my dad, he was a hard worker who had a lot of fun friends, and (I was his shadow). Panache: Have you achieved all or most of your dreams thus far? Ken: Not even close. Working a regular job and doing the rescue has put a lot on hold. My biggest short-term dream is adopting out our hardest to adopt dog (who probably has been with us over a year).

HEAVEN a match made in

A

rt and Diane Whitney, owners of A-1 Custom Cabinets is truly a unique couple. Art is a rare bird as he is a lifelong resident of Pinellas County. His cabinet career started in 1976 at a small cabinet shop. The name of that shop was A-1 Custom Cabinets. After two years of perfecting the fundamentals, he went on to work in other high end cabinet shops, followed by working directly for building contractors in custom homes. In 1980 he sought fame and fortune moonlighting as the drummer for “The Fanatics”, with a huge following throughout Florida. As the flame of fame began to dim, he again followed his passion for construction and worked as project manager for a local builder. Never one to be still, he entered the competitive world of off-road motorcycle sports earning class champion status. His competitive spirit fueled his desire to be his own boss, and there was no question as to what business he would pursue. In 1994, he returned to A-1 Custom cabinets with a silent partner and an offer to buy out the company. His destiny seemed fulfilled once he bought the company where he started his career. However, there was a new buyer on the horizon, a not- so- silent partner who sparked a whole new fire within him. Two years later his partner became his wife and he never looked back. Diane grew up in the small town of West Milton, Ohio. After graduating high school, she went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where she majored in Interior Design. Upon graduation she promptly got married and followed her husband to New York. There she worked as an Interior Designer in a major furniture store. Realizing that marriage and the bitter cold were not for her, she migrated to Florida like so many Midwesterners do. Upon her arrival, she took a position in an area interior design

studio before seeking her fortune in sales. Diane worked for 7 years as a regional manager for an automotive marketing company, after which she ignited her creative flair as a freelance designer. About this time, she was overseeing a major project when she happened upon a dashing cabinet maker named Art Whitney. Apparently she was so desperate for a date that she bought into his company. The two hit it off splendidly and within two years they were married. The rest is history! As a husband and wife team, they bring both masterful cabinet making and exquisite design together under one roof. The original A-1 Cabinets was a small cabinet shop that built mostly laminate cabinets. Art and Diane moved the shop to a new location, four times the original size, upgraded to automated machinery, and dramatically increased the volume of business. They now focus primarily on wood cabinetry with intricate detailing. Their focus is building credibility of A-1 Custom Cabinets so that their name is synonymous with life-long quality. Art and Diane want to create a legacy. They provide top quality workmanship to both residential and commercial markets, wood and laminate, indoor and outdoor. They always provide personal service and strive to exceed their clients’ expectations. They offer hundreds of styles and finishes, and have much more versatility in their design than other companies. A-1 also offers full remodeling services such as lighting, wall coverings, flooring, furniture, accessories and more! Their goal is to be the premier remodeling resource center in Tampa Bay. When not working, Art and Diane devote much of their time to local organizations as sponsors and contributors; they have a very strong belief in giving back and are Members of NARI and an Allied Member of A.S.I.D. They both love the outdoors; are loving parents to their 24 year old daughter Ryan, their dog Roxie and cats Sam and Gato. Art and Diane feel they owe a large part of their success to their parents who were inspirations for them and always believed in them. They taught them the value of hard work, honesty, integrity and a belief in God. Without their constant guidance and support, they WOULDN’T be the people they are today! Art is funloving, compassionate and discriminating whileDiane is intelligent, focused and very, very classy. Truly, a match Made in Heaven! Home Planning...

!

Environs

easy as A B C you commit, locating your media outlets and seating accordingly.

In the dining room, your most crucial dictates are storage, serving space, and pathways around the dining chairs. Allow a minimum of three feet around your table for chairs and walk space, provide for storage (not just display) for your service items, plus consider a buffet, floating shelf or serving cart. Lighting is key to setting the stage in a dining space, including chandeliers, recessed fixtures, up lighting, and candlelight!

R

earranging a room, purchasing new furniture, planning a remodel or home purchase? There are a few basics to keep in mind to ensure your new environment will work for you and your family. Let’s break it down room by room! Beginning with your porch/patio… what? Surprised we started on the outside? Most everyone enjoys the outdoors… it’s a great place to start. Ample lighting that graces your exterior, a ceiling fan for climate control, depth enough to allow for a comfortable porch swing, loveseat, or pair of chairs- this is the stuff of a practical porch. Now move into the foyer. If small, create presence with a fabulous mirror, adding a rug and, if possible a small chair, display shelf or credenza. In a larger foyer, use pieces with enough weight and style to make a statement, remembering that nothing says welcome like seating! Whether it is your living room, family room or great room that is your principal gathering space, the rules to embrace remain the same. Keep the furnishings comfortable and inviting. Depending on your family, guests, and life style, this usually will eliminate fragile, light colored upholstery. Think earth tones or strong colors rather than off whites and pastels, remembering that patterns and textures are the most forgiving when dealing with stains and wear and tear. Measure your space carefully while designing the plan and selecting furnishings - allow enough room for traffic patterns, plus side and cocktail tables. Keep your table heights in concert with your arm heights and don’t forget the appeal of ottomans, throws, area rugs, and pillows. Generally the biggest challenge in planning your gathering space is allowing for AV equipment. You may want it out of sight when not in use, therefore a cabinet that closes or components that raise and lower would be your best option. You definitely don’t want your equipment in a traffic area and your seating should allow for easy viewing, plus conversation! Easy viewing means comfortable height as well as proper distance. Allowing for conversation dictates that some of your seating be capable of swiveling or moving easily from one focal point to another. If you are remodeling, buying or building, layout your floor plan before

www.panachevue.com

In the bedrooms, take into account the location of the headboard in relation to window and door placement…sometimes leaving space for that headboard simply is forgotten in the fenestration (just a fancy word for the placement of windows or entrances) of a home. In addition, most bedrooms include a television which is best located at the foot of the bed - but is usually a really bad look on top of your dresser/mirror combo. Ergo, when laying out your bedrooms, plan for the bed(s) on a large wall across from the doorway, a dresser/mirror on the wall adjacent to the bed and farthest from the doorway and a television hookup across from the footboard. This will place your largest pieces and focal points at a distance from the entry insuring that the room looks spacious. As is the case with all tall furniture, including china cabinets, bookcases and armoires, they should always be placed away from doorways so that you do not feel as if you are walking into the proverbial wall upon entry. Remember to keep your kitchen in the efficient work triangle pattern and your counter lengths and heights in both kitchen and baths at an appropriate scale for the tasks involved - plus provide for storage and more storage in these areas! When space planning, function and form should go hand in hand…never, ever sacrifice one for the other. With lots of thought in advance, there is always room for both! Cheryl Perotti

f Angee Killian Huntley looks familiar to you, you’re probably right. For the last five years, the Dover, Florida native has been working full-time as a model and making her mark in Central Florida with her strikingly beautiful photos, including a golden goddess-like image used for the cover of Panache Vue in January 2012. “It was gorgeous; a stunning cover,” professes Huntley, who dressed to impress in several of Dali Hernandez’s garments as part of a profile on the designer. “I’d rank that shoot up there in the Top 5 of awesome shoots I had in 2012. The team was phenomenal; I couldn’t have asked for a better team of individuals. And the editors did a fantastic job of showing off House of Dali’s designs.” It was the latest in a series of high-profile projects that Huntley has participated in since landing her first cover for The Tampa Tribune’s 2010 Wedding Guide: Florida Bride, an assignment that included a six-page spread in the magazine. “It was one of my most proud moments as a model,” gushes Huntley, who admits it’s not easy to get noticed for your talents in this business. “To accomplish something so amazing in such a short amount of time in this industry, and to get it on my own, that’s an even better feat!” It’s no small accomplishment landing coveted cover shoots, but it’s all Huntley has really dreamed about since she was eight years old. “I remember my mother taking me to castings, to meet with agents, numerous photo shoots and fashion shows,” recalls Huntley, who looks up to supermodels Cindy Crawford and Christie Brinkley for their timeless beauty. “Being so young and new to the industry, everything looked very exciting and I loved everything about it!” Huntley’s passion for modeling hasn’t dwindled in the least, thanks to exhilarating projects like portraying Gala Dalí at the opening of the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg. “Playing the part of Dalí’s wife, I made myself look like her for the guests in attendance,” says Huntley. “It was a lot of fun walking around such an amazing place, looking at all the wonderful works of art and seeing everyone enjoy us being there. It was a huge hit!” And Huntley believes the hits will keep on coming in the years to come, despite the added responsibility of being a wife and mother these days.

“I have a very large support group when it comes to my husband and daughter,” declares Huntley, who says that she wouldn’t be where she is today without the support of everyone around her. “I’m not going to say its easy juggling being a mom and wife, but somehow I manage to make it all come together and work best for us, which allows me to pursue what I love to do.” Huntley, who has worked with prominent Tampa Bay designers like Hernandez, Ivanka Ska and Nicole Mabalot and Michelle Cobble of Wicked Betty during her career, is ready forher next picture-perfect close-up.

The path to finding what truly makes you happy comes from you, your past experiences and your future goals. Never take no for an answer. Just because you’re not the right look for someone doesn’t mean you won’t be for the next. Keep pushing for your dreams and be your own kind of beautiful.”

Panache People To Know

J

ohn Kent began his professional fitness career in an unconventional way. He was a stage performer and had to be in peak physical condition at all times. Once John discovered the benefits of health and fitness for himself, he studied to become a Certified Personal Trainer. For many years, he worked one on one with people seeking to get in shape.

But then John saw a Boot Camp from Southern California and liked the format. He quickly realized he could help more women reach their health goals at a fraction of the cost of hiring a personal trainer. John’s Adventure Boot Camp for Women is a convenient way to add a fun-filled hour of activity and movement into your life to achieve your fitness and weight loss goals. John’s fitness philosophy is unique. He believes exercise should not be what you live for, but the thing that helps you live better. John also understands that you need Boot Camp to be fun, exciting and different every day. If it’s not, it’s just drudgery. At Boot Camp, time moves so fast that BAM! It’s over before you know it. A 30+-year resident of Tampa Bay, John currently lives in Dunedin, Florida with his wife, three daughters and a son. Panache: Why did you choose this business or line of work? John: After owning a personal training service for about 10 years, I discovered the fitness boot camp model out in Southern California in 2007. It provided two key elements to my clients that personal training could not: 1) The boot camp model makes time fly and working out fun! 2) It was affordable – you can come to 5-days of boot camp for the price I used to charge for 1 session of personal training. For me, the added value I was able to give my clients by switching from personal training to boot camp was a no-brainer. Panache: What is your primary role or duty in your company? John: There are only 2 employees in my company, me and my wife. So obviously that means that we both wear multiple hats, but my primary duties are Program Design and Fitness and Nutrition coaching for our 100+ monthly campers. My wife handles most of the office administration. We made a very conscious decision to not expand our business and be “Small, but GREAT”. Panache: What sets you apart from your competition? John: We live in a world where “instant gratification” is king and marketers have learned to play on that. There are many fitness and weight loss programs that offer “quick fixes and magic bullets”, but just like the getrich quick schemes that most of us would never fall for, they seldom work in the short-run and almost never work in the long run. At North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women, we don’t sell outrageous (and sometimes harmful) programs that promise you’ll “lose 30 lbs. in 30 days while you sleep, eating all of the foods you love and with no exercise needed”. There are many programs out there that will provide quick weight loss, but the results and methods to get there are not sustainable for life (and many times, not healthy). Instead, what we offer is a habit-based nutrition coaching program which teaches you how to develop habits and rituals to help you lose weight and maintain long-term success. We like to focus on what you can do and not on what you can’t do. But, that’s not all, we also provide expert, science-based fitness instruction so you don’t have to do it alone and so you can be assured that you are doing “purposeful exercise”…not just some random stuff that will

36 Panache Vue’

never help you reach your goals. Time flies in our fast and fun, never-a-dull-moment, one-hour boot camp. Our boot camp meets outside so you’re not stuck inside all of the time. (Our 9 AM camp does move indoors for the summer due to the heat, but other than that, we are a completely outdoor boot camp and the ladies in our camp love it that way!) The combination of the habit-based nutrition coaching and our science based exercise program, is our recipe for your long-term success. This way your weight loss effort is not like the movie Groundhog Day where you’re always starting over with the next new diet, new exercise program, new pills, new gadget, etc. Panache: What would you be doing now if it weren’t for your business, taking money out of the equation? John: As shocking as it may sound, I would like to go into the ministry (possibly even as a pastor) and go on missionary trips. Panache: What do you do for fun? John: I own my own business and I have 4 children (11 and under), but with all the free time I have besides that…LOL…my wife and I love to travel whenever we get the opportunity and go on little adventures with our family. Panache: Who or what is most important to you, personally or professionally? John: God and my family

Panache: A little secret about you that would shock those who don’t know you! John: I used to have long hair, all the way down to my butt! The only reason I cut it off was because I had a daughter and wanted to shape her influences in a positive way. Panache: What are your personal and professional mottos? John: “Just because you’re paranoid does not mean they’re not out to get you.” (I’m totally kidding here and couldn’t resist…LOL!) Panache: When you were five, what was your dream to be when you grew up? John: A rock star – I’m still working on it:) Panache: Have you achieved all or most of your dreams thus far? John: Yes and no. One dream that I had from a very young age was to be an entrepreneur. I have achieved my dream of owning my own business for almost 15 years now, but I will never be able to say I have achieved ALL of my dreams because when I do achieve a dream, I then make new goals and dreams. And, sometimes in life, you realize that your dreams change just like you do. I believe in growth at all times. Photography by Don Shepherd | XOPIXO
