Dear Readers, On behalf of all at Panache-E-Magazine, we would like to thank all our readers for your continuing support. This month’s edition, as always, is focussed on positivity; for us as individuals and as a community. However, we recognise that even as our focus is; positivity concerning the BAME community in the UK, in America, the negative attitude of the police towards people of colour is being exposed daily by the use of smart phones and social media. Hopefully things will begin to change with the glare of international scrutiny on a Nation which seeks to categorize itself as the “leader of the free World.” We will also continue to push the message; concerning getting our communities to work together to achieve economic independence. Our aim has always been to encourage our communities to become stronger by creating closer ties between communities across the UK and the Caribbean (Unity is strength). To this end we created the Miss Caribbean UK pageant. (Please visit www. misscaribbeanuk.com to read more).

arnival as it is celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago is also celebrated in cities worldwide. These including Toronto’s Caribana, Miami’s Carnival, Houston Carifest, London’s Notting Hill Carnival as well as New York City’s Labour Day Carnival to name a few. The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival’s annual event is held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, the festival is associated with calypso music; however, Soca music has replaced calypso as the most celebrated type of music. Costumes, stick-fighting and limbo competitions are also important components of the festival. Before the parade of the bands, the National Carnival Bands Association (NCBA) usually organises a day called “Big Friday” which is a competition that hosts the top junior and senior kings and queens costumes of carnival, but this year the parade was run by NCC, National Carnival Committee.

With the best individuals in the visual art of masquerade competing for their respective titles, along with a cultural extravaganza showcase, viewers get to experience the creative pinnacle of the Trinidad and Tobago‘s carnival with colourful costumes and exuberant celebrations. The designers and competitors get to perform on the biggest stage for MAS. And the climax for all is the award ceremony where the new kings and queens of carnival are crowned. In 2014, Donna Philip-Forde entered the Trinidad and Tobago’s “Big Friday” competition for the first time and shares her experience with Panache e-Magazine readers.

In a nutshell, who is Donna PhilipForde? Donna Philip-Forde

I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and came to England in 1976 to study for a Diploma in www.panacheoccasions.com /

Montessori Teaching. Two years later after getting my diploma, I decided to work to be able to get some funds to open my own school in Trinidad. I branched off into clerical work and started a family which resulted in me opting to remain working in this field and not having the chance to follow through to open my school.

The costumes worn by the masquerades were always spectacular but it was the Queen of the band who made the biggest impression to me as she always commanded the stage throughout. It was these moments that spurred me to not only want to be a part of it, but to assume the queen role in the band.

When you were a child what did you dream you would be doing when you grew up?

Tell our readers what keeps you inspired to continue within the carnival business?

I am the youngest of two children and growing up in Trinidad I had a doctor’s set and liked playing doctors and nurses, helping people and thinking I was going to be the best doctor ever. I also aspired to be a Queen of Carnival parading down the streets in all my glory

What do you consider are your main passions in life?

My main purpose in life is to be the best I can be in achieving whatever I set out to do, and helping people along the way. As far as Carnival is concerned I would like to keep the culture alive and to be able to pass on my knowledge to the younger generation, so that they can carry it forward for generations to come.

What was your first experience of carnival?

One of the most significant and exciting experiences I looked forward to while growing up in Trinidad and Tobago was the annual Carnival celebrations. Every year my parents would take us to the main bandstands in the capital city, Port of Spain, to look at the parading bands. The constant flow and variety of costumes across the stage had always intrigued me. 8

What was it about carnival that impressed you most?

AUGUST 2016 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

Since I came to this country, I played with a few bands, before I settled down with Dragons. I began with a small costume then I progressed to Female Individual finally my dream materialised in London and I assumed the Queen position for my band Dragons Cultural Arts in Notting Hill Carnival for many years and recently had the time and opportunity to be able to play in Trinidad. I won the title of Queen of the bands in London once before, and have also been fortunate enough to secure finalist placings as well, in past years. My love for Carnival continues to grow and since joining Dragons, we were able to continue promoting our culture and by contributing to other Carnivals in and around London as well as to other countries like Germany and China .

What would you say is your ultimate goal in the business of carnival?

Assuming the role of the Queen in Trinidad, has been an ultimate goal for me, all the hype, hard work and excitement has made it totally worthwhile. When the day of competition finally arrives, all the hard preparation and the sleepless nights just fade into the background.

The Notting Hill Carnival The time to show off the costume for all to see, standing there waiting for my turn, waiting to hear them announce my name, standing at the edge of the stage feeling the bright lights on me, knowing that its finally time to step out, into the portrayal of the character. That excitement remains with me for many months after the day is done.

Are there any pitfalls in the business of carnival?

The main setbacks includes looking for sponsors and a MAS camp, the place where we make our costumes, has always been the two biggest hurdles for us to cross. It has been very expensive to compete in Trinidad, being able to maintain the high standards that are expected in a competition of that calibre. For me, the downside of participating as carnival queen are the costs involved in producing the costumes and travelling to Trinidad and Tobago with my designer.

interested in donating can go to www. crowdfundinginternational.eu/user/queenie As for my London band, Dragons Cultural Arts, for further information, you can check our website www.dragonsculturalarts.com or any donations please have a look at www. crowdfundinginternational.eu/user/legacy

In closing – is there a quote or saying you can share with Panache readers, which has either touched you or which you feel can inspire someone on their journey?

I always say if you have a dream, “Never give up” no matter how hard things become, because if you believe you will achieve.

If you were to travel back in time to when you were 8 years old, what advice would you give to yourself?

Enjoy your life on earth to the fullest and if you have a dream always pursue it no matter how long it takes to come to fruition.

What are your plans for the 2016 and beyond? Each year, as soon as one Carnival season is over, I start saving for the next. I have recently started my carnival project on the Crowd Funding International platform where I hope to raise some funds for February 2017 Carnival. Donations? I would be extremely grateful for any assistance I can get. Anyone

A brief synopsis of your history with Carnival: My first carnival appearance was in 2002, this was mainly to advertise and market the morris roots brand (locs, natural hair and products). As the band became more popular in 2010 the name was changed from morris roots to tears mas, this is where the concept shifted to more pretty mas which enabled me to integrated my creativity, my heritage coming from tnt and my love for fashion to create the design that is seen today.

What inspired you to start up your own Mas band?

Fashion was the main inspiration for starting my own band

How many years has your Mas band been in operation?

Top 10 Tips for Notting Hill Carnival

First time at the biggest street carnival in Europe? Here's what you need to know. 1. Forget the Tube map During Notting Hill Carnival, some underground stations are temporarily shut to avoid congestion. If you want to avoid wandering the streets of West London for hours, don't "wing it" – plan your journey home in advance using Transport for London's Journey Planner. And don't even think about driving. 2. Ditch the heels You'll be on your feet all day, so comfort is key. Think closed-toe flats (flipflops will probably break and aren't the best for wading through rubbish at the end of the day). But don't forget: it is carnival! Leave the pastels in the wardrobe and bring out the colour. Accessorise with flags, whistles, crazy hats... anything goes. 3. Pack your carnival essentials Tissue in case the portaloo has run out? Check. Wet wipes for your post-jerk chicken fingers? Check. Bottle of water to hydrate after wild dancing? Check. Carnival route map so you can avoid barricaded roads? Check. Sunscreen and sunglasses for the suitably Caribbean-style sunshine? Check. Stress-free carnival: sorted. 4. Take the kids Some people would baulk at taking the family to carnival, but plenty do and have a fantastic 16

day. Our advice would be go early on Sunday, which is Family Day and when the children's groups parade – it's quieter and more relaxed than Monday. If possible, leave the pram at home but do have enough adults to carry each toddler through the crowds and when they get tired. Bring earplugs just in case. 5. Meet in advance Finding people at carnival can be a nightmare, with road closures and the streets full of partying people. Try to meet your friends elsewhere and travel in together – and take your mobile phones, as you may get separated in the crowd or find yourself swept into the parade! 6. Find a good spot If you want to get good photos of the parade and feel part of the action, location is everything. Stand by the judges' platform and you'll see the groups really pull out all the stops, but for a more informal, interactive vibe, bagsy a front-row spot along the main route. There are always lively sections and quieter spots so it is possible to find the right place for you. 7. Don't forget the soundsystems On your first carnival visit it's easy to think carnival is all about the parade, and never leave the route. But down the side streets you'll find a whole other side to carnival: the soundsystems. Blasting out everything from soca, reggae and calypso to dance, house and dub, these pop-up parties each have their own USP – so do your research beforehand and arrive early as some soundsystems, like carnival king Norman Jay's annual Good Times, are so popular there's crowd control.

The Notting Hill Carnival

8. Eat Caribbean At carnival, you're never far from the delicious smells of a smoking barbeque – and jerk chicken and rice is the dish of the day. Go easy on the sauce if you don't want a mouth of fire. Other favourites include goat curry, and ackee and salt fish. Veggies: look out for vegetarian patties, curries and chips. 9. Stay safe Notting Hill Carnival is a lively, fun and welcoming festival, but (like with any huge event) staying aware and alert is important. Avoid pickpockets by keeping your valuables out of sight and out of easy reach. If you can, steer clear of congested streets or wait until the blockage has cleared. And if you have any worries, inform a police officer – you're never far from one at carnival.

10. Join the afterparty If your feet haven't given up on you, continue the festivities at one of the many carnival after parties in the area and across London. Keep an eye out on event listings to find out what's going on. And book the next day off work if you can!

being the ‘Mother of Carnival’), a Trinidadian journalist and political activist. It took place in St. Pancras Town Hall as a response to the Notting Hill Race Riots of 1958. This first Carnival was considered a huge success, despite being held indoors. A few years later in 1966 the first outdoors event was organised, inspired by the London Free School and the hippie movement.

However, the Notting Hill Carnival isn’t only about the music, each year there are hundreds of street stalls treating everyone to an array of culinary delights from the Countries of the Caribbean. Originally led by members of the West Indian migrant community in London, in particular those from Trinidad and Tobago (Trinis), the first festival was organised by Claudia Jones (who is widely recognised as

The aim of this event was to promote cultural unity, and was spearheaded by Rhaune Laslett, a community activist. What started as a street party for local children turned into a carnival procession with a steel band. This was the first time that steel pan band music was played on the streets of London and it united the minority population, who had felt alienated from community celebrations thus farand laid the foundations for the Notting Hill Carnival procession that we see today. http://www.thenottinghillcarnival.com
