The women who have appeared in our pages of the pink edition on Oct. 1 and here in Her Times have bravely shared their stories of breast cancer. Sharing is part of this important fight, because I learned last year in a telephone interview with survivor and celebrity Ann Jillian that even speaking of breast cancer was once far from the norm. Now, women bond to lift one another up, advise each other and share experiences.

Thanks to all of the women who helped us communicate the message that we must be vigilant in detection. To some, this may sound like an old message, but every year we discover readers, family members, friends, co-workers and acquaintances who have had breast cancer, mastectomies, chemotherapy,

he love between a woman and her purse runs deep. So deep that being without our purses for even a few minutes puts us into ultimate panic mode.

The items in my bag help me to navigate better days.

Because fall has arrived, I couldn’t resist treating myself to a new Michael Kors dreamy, buttery, classic, black leather Beverly drawstring tote with gold hardware. I had no problem filling it up with my favorite day-to-day survival items.

This is the first of a special HT feature called “What’s in Your Bag?” Because it was my suggestion, the HT editors asked me to kick it off.

While I may not be Mary Poppins (I do not have a lamp or umbrella in my bag), my purse includes my life’s possessions.

My on-the-go essentials: Phone: My iPhone is my lifeline to the world. Not surprisingly, it’s in a Coach animal print protective case.

Gym stuff: Femme Fitale Fitness leopard print weight gloves. I love lifting weights, and I could not get through my Body Pump workout without these. They save my hands from developing ugly calluses. I have in my purse my Under Armour gym headband, which helps my hair stay off my face during workouts.

Nose: I always have tissues on hand.

Because I am a shoe lover, a friend picked these “Behind every woman ... is a fabulous pair of shoes” up for me.

Makeup bag: I just carry a few pieces of makeup in my Coach bag. Lipstick is something I cannot live without. MAC’s

Wonder Woman Frosted Heroine is one of my favorites. Not only does it make you feel empowered, but it is a beautiful frosted brown color. I also carry TwoFaced Nude Beach. It makes for the perfect nude. Chapstick is a best friend.

Chap-Ice Cherry makes my lips feel smooth. I also carry Benefit’s They’re Real mascara for touch up on my lashes during the day. My favorite eye shadow is Bare Minerals Nude Beach Glimmer Shadow. It is a shimmery neutral tone and goes with anything. I carry makeup brushes with me as well. I cannot go anywhere without my rewetting drops for my contacts.

Hands: I usually keep some nail polish in my bag. Sally Hansen’s Shark Bait matches everything. For days when my nails need some TLC, I have OPI’s Nail Envy on hand. This product lives up to its name. I also have a nail kit that includes a file and rhinestone clippers in case of a broken nail. I am a germaphobe, and I do not leave home without antibacterial gel. Bath & Body makes a nice lemon scent that doesn’t smell obnoxious.

My hands get dry, especially in the

winter. Arbonne’s ultra-hydrating hand cream is an answer to my prayers.

Teeth: My mornings always start with coffee so toothpaste and a toothbrush is a must for me.

Hair: For days when my hair is unruly, I always have barrettes or a hair clip.

Naturally curly hair has a life of its own.

My Pennello brush combs through anything. I carry Rave travel-size hair spray.

Coupons: I love to shop, and I always enter stores armed and dangerous with a good stash of coupons.

Wallet: I love this DeLux wallet for many reasons. It matches my purse but wasn’t big bucks. I scooped it up at TJ Maxx, and it holds my credit cards and cash nicely. I also carry a green Kate Spade card case for any additional cards.

Eyes: I don’t wear my JLO rhinestone glasses all that often, but I do carry them with me in the event one of my contacts tears. I carry this leopard print contact case in case my contacts need a rest.

Business: I carry my business cards with me because I am always networking.

I also have a pen on hand.

Misc.: I carry adhesive bandages

into denim

hile some fashion trends fade, denim has remained strong in the fashion world. If denim isn’t a staple in your wardrobe this fall, it should be. Women everywhere are falling into denim.

Erie’s Frugal Fashionista and Park Lane fashion director Valerie Weaver said, “Denim will serve as a foundation for many looks this fall. Denim can go from classic to chic, depending on what you pair it with. Invest in a few quality pieces for versatility and function. Boyfriend and flare jeans are a must have, as well as a denim jacket.”

Dyeing to get into some denim, I paid Old Navy a visit. The store is a denim gold mine.

They have everything you can imagine. Choose from patchwork jeans, dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets and overalls.

I picked some denim staples for my wardrobe and jazzed them up with some simple items from my closet. You can wear your denim casually or dress it up.

The first item I came across was a pair of boyfriend jeans with patches down the front. I paired them with an ivory, red and blue plaid shirt. I added a great statement necklace, which dressed the look up a little. Because the jeans are cuffed, I paired them with pumps.

are wearing them. They are sporting them with dresses, skirts or leggings. They make for the perfect ensemble to complete your look. I fell in love with this semi-faded one from Old Navy. You can wear it with just about anything, but I thought it would be fun to wear it with another one of my wardrobe staples. I pulled this leopard pencil skirt from my closet. I thought it would be fun to wear it with a crisp, white blouse and pearls. Don’t forget a sleek pair of black boots or ankle boots.

Say “yes” to the denim dress. Women are obsessing over denim shirtdresses. Why? The answer is simple ... it flatters every figure. I am curvy and usually wear sheaths, but I can pull off this denim dress from Old Navy with a belt and great necklace or scarf.

The best thing about denim is you can find it anywhere. Light or dark, you can’t go wrong this fall. Even Gabriel Bros., Target and Kmart have several items to pick from.

So get out your favorite denim pieces and rock them this fall. The seasons may come and go, but one thing is certain ... the denim trend will not fade this fall. HT

SURVIVOR stories touch hearts

uliza Caban, a 41-year-old breast cancer survivor, lost her mother and grandmother to breast cancer, but she has a sense of humor that goes beyond fun. After a radical bilateral mastectomy more than a decade ago, she wrote a 2007 letter to the editor at the Erie Times-News, in which she paid tribute to family and friends who helped her through the disease, chemotherapy and more.

Especially her sister, Miriam “Millie.”

Here’s what she wrote: “Can you imagine how she must have felt having lost Mom and Grandma to the illness and then not knowing if she was going to lose her only sister? But that didn’t stop her from taking care of me like only a sister can. She practically moved in with me and cared for my every need.

“At times it drove me crazy, such as the time she fed me spinach for 22 days straight. She figured if it made Popeye strong, then it surely would make me

strong, too. Or the time she shaved her head bald. Oh, I wanted to kill her. I wasn’t bald yet, and she was.

“But that’s my Millie. That was her way of saying ‘we are in this together.’

There were many people who, in one way or another, made it a lot easier to deal with it all, but Millie will always be my hero.”

Today, she calls her sister the crazy nurse, “but I’m good; I’m healthy because she takes such good care of the sick in the family. But she makes us crazy.”

Caban is the PFA coordinator at the Erie County Courthouse, a job she has held for 12 years.

Caban had gene mutation testing done, and had results that prompted her to seek a hysterectomy. “Just keep me alive,” she said. “Take whatever.”

The divorced mom of an 18-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter won’t let anything keep her down, and she’s not about to hide it from anyone. “They’re

well-adjusted, and I’m open with them,” she said.

McClaudia Nolley, 79, is a retired music teacher from Roosevelt Middle School. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, had a mastectomy and chemotherapy, and she said she was lucky. “God was pretty good to me. I didn’t lose my hair, and compared to some of my friends, I was very fortunate,” she said.

In the years since, she said she’s had good health and is still teaching private piano lessons and is the choir director at Greater Calvary Baptist Church. She is the mom of two, grandmother to four and has one great grandchild. “I’m a winner, and I didn’t stop when I had cancer,” she said.

Anne O’Neill, program director of the advertising communication program at Gannon University for 19 years, found a lump and knew she had to act quickly.

“Everyone has to go through the initial assault of learning they have breast cancer in their own way. For me, it was to take a proactive and positive approach (with lots of faltering times) and just move ahead. I would recommend not going on the Internet. I did it once and really thought it did more harm than good. Pull in your posse, rally the troops, get together with your friends

and let them help. Accepting help is not a sign of weakness. I can’t possibly begin to thank all of the women who really were there for me when I needed it. I also found a lot of strength in my faith,” she said. HT

her to the Cleveland Clinic where she had a mastectomy and chemotherapy that resulted in fevers and hospitalization. “Treatments were amended, and the rest of the treatments were doable,” she said.

Reconstruction includes three surgeries, and two are done. Despite her illness, O’Neill, like Caban and Nolley, feels she was blessed.

“God blessed me. I learned so much from this experience. It has changed my life in so many ways — all for the better. I value every day, the people around me, and the experiences I have,” she said.

“I needed to pull strength to battle this disease from within. I thought about how I could tell myself that and came up with the idea of wearing at least a little bit of red each day. For me red is a color that represents power and strength. So every day since my diagnosis, I have worn something that has some red in it so that I can look down, see the power and remind myself to grab the strength I need to move forward,” she said.

Red colored her jewelry, scarves, lipstick, shirts, sweaters, sneakers and purses. “The color red will always have a special meaning for me,” she said.

O’Neill also lost her hair and admits it was very difficult. “My mom and daughters came to the salon with me to have it cut short when it started falling out, and I sat in my bathroom and combed most of it out and then cried. A friend shaved my head later that day, we took photos together.

Her hair was really short because she was still going through chemo treatments herself for breast cancer.

Having her there made me realize it wasn’t so bad. She was beautiful. I wore a wig and scarves. Eventually when my hair started growing I just let me be me. Now my hair is curly; I never had curly hair before, but I have Shirley Temple curls all

or most people, exposing, recording and recovering buried material is often associated with a romantic treasure hunt often seen in the movies.

But some Erie women are blazing the trail for women archaeologists and making marks across the globe.

Penn State Behrend’s Leigh-Ann Bedal and Gannon University’s Suzanne Richard are two professors who direct two separate digs, or excavation sites, in Jordan. Mercyhurst University’s Heather Garvin was part of an international team that studies fossils unearthed from a cave in South Africa — fossils that led to the discovery of a new species of human.

Anne Marjenin, who serves as the director of the archaeology processing laboratory and field archaeologist of Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute, is a principal excavator at Mercyhurst’s Vero Beach Dig in Florida.

“It’s a really exciting time to be in the field of archaeology. I think we are seeing this with more other fields, as well, but women are becoming more involved in the sciences, and we are seeing that in archaeology as well,” Marjenin said.

directed an excavation of an ancient desert garden and pool complex that appeared in a documentary feature on PBS this past year. The program, “Petra: Lost City of Stone,” uses computer reconstructions and hydraulic studies to explore the elaborate water systems in the capital city of ancient Nabatea, located in modern Jordan. The program is part of a three-episode series, “Building Wonders,” produced by Nova. Other episodes explore the Roman Colosseum and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

“When I started this in 1997, I had no idea what I was getting myself into,” Bedal said. “I had been digging in Petra for a few years and wanted to discover more history that would add to the Temple. But when I started digging, we uncovered so many features in just that one field season and realized that this wasn’t a market place of the temple, but rather, it was a pool and a garden.”

Bedal discovered evidence of an elaborate hydraulic system and a large garden terrace — the only known example of a Nabatean garden.

Richard, a professor in the History and Archaeology Department, as well as in the Theology Department at Gannon University, was the first American

woman to receive a permit to direct an excavation in Jordan in 1981. She currently directs a dig in Jordan at a site called Khirbat Iskandar, about 30 miles south of the capital city of Amman. Many of the 5,000-year old materials from Khirbat Iskandar and other sites are available to view in the Archaeology Museum Gallery at Gannon, which opened in April 2013.

“There had been British women dig directors previously and lots of women in supervisory roles, but the directors were men. Today, it is not an issue,” Richard said. “I’m rather proud of being a trailblazer for women in the field of archaeology. It was difficult at first since the rules were known unofficially among the network of male directors. But, soon enough, I was one of the ‘guys.’”

Their experiences are available through field schools for students, who gain handson experience while learning about the history and culture of various locations.

Penn State Behrend students have participated in Bedal’s four-week archaeological field school at Petra.

Gannon University students have participated in Richard’s 5- to 6-week field school at Khirbat Iskandar. Mercyhurst University has a field school in Taos, N.M.,

and at the Old Vero Man Site in Florida.

Marjenin works specifically with the university’s field students on their digs in both locations. Although she first gained interest in the field as a fourth-grader on a field trip that focused specifically on archaeology, Marjenin really garnered her interest as a former field student at Mercyhurst University.

“I enjoy the precision that we employ and the different methodology that we use to fully document a site and recover information about people who have lived in the past,” Marjenin said. “I always wanted to be in the field, and that’s what I really enjoy about my job. I didn’t expect to be working on some of the projects that I’m involved in, but I am grateful because I think they will give us new and exciting information about people in the past.”

Although both Richard’s and Bedal’s current digs stem from their dissertations, their initial interest in the field of archaeology derived from the field’s mix of different disciplines.

Richard was drawn into the field of archaeology after reading James A. Michener’s “The Source” at an impressionable age.

Bedal discovered the field during her undergraduate studies.

“When I grew up, women were supposed to be secretaries, nurses, teachers or housewives — those were the options. But once I started college, I was taking courses in things that had never been offered to me in a secondary education and was exposed to the field of anthropology, and then archaeology, and realized, ‘Hey, I can do this.’ It combined a lot of my interest in ancient history, other cultures, human origins and all of that,” Bedal said.

Years later, their interest has provided them with rewarding feats.

“My biggest accomplishment is not the discovery of a particular artifact; rather, it is the satisfaction knowing that the Khirbat Iskandar excavations over the years have proved my major thesis in my dissertation that the post-urban period (Early Bronze IV) in the southern Levant is not as pastoral-nomadic as people once thought, and it is not a culture cut off from the preceding or following cultures,” Richard said.

COLORING: It’s not just for kids

y daughter is tucked in for the night, and my husband is reading her a story. It’s quiet, and I take a deep, cleansing breath. It’s time to unwind.

I grab a glass of wine and sit down at my coffee table and begin flipping through my coloring books in search of the perfect picture to work on. I select my subject and lay out my colored pencils, then fire up Aquarium For Your Home on Netflix. My phone is silenced and out of reach. My scene is set, and I’m ready to color.

That’s right. Coloring isn’t just for kids anymore. In fact, more and more adults are turning to coloring as a creative outlet for stress relief. I hadn’t colored in ages, but when my daughter started to use coloring books and crayons, it quickly crept back into my life. It was fun to make the pictures pretty with color and to be coloring with my daughter.

As time went on, after a stressful day at the office, I was turning to coloring as a way to decompress. I would grab a variety of coloring books (usually Disney Princess and My Little Pony) and a big container of crayons and color my stress away.

While scrolling through Facebook one day, I saw a post by my friend Joelyn Bush displaying her new coloring book for adults. I was intrigued. This coloring book was so different from what I was used to coloring. Think detailed, intricate designs and patterns in a variety of subjects that can take hours to complete.

There are endless possibilities for the perfect color palette.

Surely you recall the enjoyment of coloring when we were kids, but you may wonder how incorporating it into your adult life can manage stress. “Any sort of structured, nonthreatening, repetitive activity may be self-soothing, selfregulating and help to refocus the mind into a relaxed state,” says Vanessa Mazza, an art therapist.

Coloring allows us to use our imagination and provides a sense of nostalgia, taking us back to a simple time in life — childhood. Simply speaking, coloring is comforting, enjoyable and peaceful. Even if it is only temporary relief from stress, it is a healthy way to manage stress.

Because it is so accessible, coloring is a perfect option to help combat your daily worries. “There’s an innate confidence in coloring; we all do it from such a young age,” said Bush. “It’s been very rewarding to see my work and feel as if I had a part

in making it beautiful. The ‘hard work’ was done. I could never draw the outlines that the artist does, but I know how to color. It’s elementary, fundamental and classic.”

So how do you get started? Easy. Color what makes you happy, whether that be your favorite cartoon character or a detailed garden scene. Pick your tools based on what you would like to accomplish with the finished product.

Most common choices are crayons, colored pencils, pens and markers.

While you may finish a picture in a traditional coloring book quickly, the intricacies of a page in an adult book require much more time.

Adult coloring books are available in many designs and subjects. Some of the most popular subjects include mandalas, mehndi designs, florals, geometric

patterns, nature, animals, music, food/ drink and whimsical imagery.

According to clinical art therapist Lacy Mucklow, co-author of “Color Me Calm, Color Me Happy” and the upcoming “Color Me Stress Free,” colors can actually carry therapeutic qualities. “Your color selection can actually affect your mood,” said Mucklow.

Cool colors such as blue, green and purple have a calming effect, while warm colors, like red, orange and yellow, can lift a bad mood. Bright colors are energizing, dark colors possess a relaxing energy, and pastels convey a soft, soothing effect.

To start, choose a place that is comfortable. Add in your favorite music or sounds of nature and a beverage. Most importantly, it’s time to unplug. Turn off your smart phone, TV, computer and tablet and forget about technology.

A coloring book and pencils don’t need to travel with you. Bush introduced me to Colorfy, an app that allows you to color on the go, using your smart phone or tablet. “This is a way to get your coloring fix in a hurry and when you’re looking for a different creative outlet,” she said.

Colorfy is free and available on both iOS and Android devices.

Adult coloring books make unique gifts. “Order a set of pens and a Johanna Basford book and package them as a set,” Bush suggested.

It won’t take you long to discover that coloring is fun, meditative and helps you get in touch with what makes you happy by focusing on something positive. No matter what your preference may be, allow yourself the opportunity to unplug, unwind and color your troubles away while treating yourself to artistic expression and unleashing your creativity. HT

f there’s anything I can do, just let me know.”

Most of us have said it at one time or another to someone who is going through a hard time, whether an illness or a challenging time personally.

Yet, how many of us actually do anything?

And, as someone who has been ill, I don’t feel well enough to tell you what to do.

But I can tell you — now, as someone who has recovered — that I would have appreciated dinner delivered. I may not have been up to eating it, but it would have fed family members who did have an appetite and no mom to cook for them.

You could do this yourself or you could head up Peach Street to Super Suppers, where Sandra Luthringer has done all the work for you. Luthringer, the store’s owner, is a registered dietitian and worked at the Regional Cancer Center for 19 years and wrote “Nutrition and Cancer, Practical Tips and Tasty Recipes for Survivors.”

Early on, Super Suppers was a place to go to make your own meals and freeze them. Today, the business has evolved to primarily prepared frozen meals designed to feed three people and priced at $14.99.

Luthringer said she was ready for a change after nearly two decades at the Cancer Center. “I saw an article in a

magazine,” she recalled during an interview in her office at 5042 Peach St. She liked the idea of consumers being able to spend one hour and take home 12 meals.

Super Suppers is no longer a franchise — most closed in 2008, but Luthringer kept the name. “At that point, it was sink or swim,” she said.

Most of the recipes were based on the Super Suppers recipe book, but during the summer of 2015, Luthringer and Jessica Czerwinski went through all of the recipes to meet a labeling requirement change to notify customers about allergens. The two reworked the meals to make them healthier. Czerwinski has a degree in nutrition.

The duo, along with an intern, reduced the amount of butter, cheese and other ingredients without changing the flavors. Indeed, today they offer more vegetarian options to reflect that dietary change in the U.S. Super Suppers also works with the Dr. Dean Ornish program at UPMC Hamot, catering the meals for the Ornish member meetings. “Now, they can just come here and get their entrees,” Luthringer said.

YOGA great therapy for breast cancer

oga is a popular choice of exercise for breast cancer patients, both during treatment and remission. Yoga can teach you a triad of full body strength, flexibility and meditation during the course of a class.

Particularly during the course of cancer treatment, yoga can help establish a sense of normalcy. It can be a consistent escape from reality that provides strength, flexibility and relaxation. or nearly 20 years, orthodontists Kenneth Doleski and Marian Wolford, partners in Doleski & Wolford Orthodontics in Erie, have helped clients find confidence and self-esteem with smiles.

“Seeing their smiles transform is one of the best parts of my job,” Doleski said.

Wolford added, “Orthodontia can be really life-changing, especially for people who might have been embarrassed about their teeth and never showed them. ” The doctors extended those smiles to staff when they paid for staff members to participate in the Her Times 5K. It all started in 2007 when one of their staff members — Barb Kuch — spotted an advertisement for the Her Times 5K. Kuch, who had recently started running, said she found the 5K atmosphere and experience to be energizing and fun.

“Barb suggested we do it as a teambuilding event for our office staff the next year,” Wolford said. “We try to do a

few charity events with our staff each year because it gets us out of the dental mode and lets us give back to the community that supports us. So we did it, and everyone loved it.”

“We thought, well, the majority of people who work in dental offices are women, so why not encourage all of them to do it with us?” Doleski said.

After the event, the doctors hosted a a picnic, and everyone got acquainted.

Yesterday, more than 95 participants on the Doleski & Wolford team joined in the HT 5K. “Our first year we had no idea what to expect when we got the invite and thought, ‘What? A race?’” said Lynne Mowris, billing manager at Bell Dental Associates in Harborcreek.

“But after we went and then joined doctors Doleski and Wolford at the cabin for the picnic, we added it to our ‘must-do’ list. I’ve been in the dental field for nearly 30 years, and it’s nice to have an opportunity to visit with other dental staff in a casual, fun way. Every

year, our office is grateful for the invite to this top-notch event!”

And the invitation designer Kelly May is in charge of themes — like the 2015 Superheroes invitation with inspirational quotes from female superheroes. Wolford walks in the 5K, often with her teenage daughter.

Doleski’s wife and daughter also participate. He says he is perfectly happy to play a supporting role.

“I am the official fire tender at the cabin,” he said with a chuckle. “I always go out to watch the race for a while, though. It’s wonderful to see everyone so happy. They all have these huge smiles.” Clearly, it’s all about the smiles for Doleski and Wolford. HT

The fight against breast cancer may begin in the kitchen. A study suggests that women can dramatically reduce their risk of the disease by following a version of the Mediterranean diet that goes heavy on extravirgin olive oil.

A large, randomized clinical trial shows that women who did so were 62 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer compared with women who were simply asked to reduce the overall amount of fat in their diets. The results were published recently in JAMA Internal Medicine.

After tracking nearly 7,500 people for five years, the researchers had compelling evidence that those who were on a Mediterranean diet had better heart health than their counterparts who weren’t.

The trial was ended in 2010.

The researchers wrote that getting at least 15 percent of total calories in the form of extra-virgin olive oil “seems to be instrumental for obtaining this significant protection.”

The study is the first randomized clinical trial that suggests a Mediterranean diet offers women protection from breast cancer. But more trials are needed to get a better understanding of the link between the two.

In the aftermath of a large study on one of the most perplexing of all breast cancers — ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS — Mayo clinician Dr. Sandhya

Pruthi said the primary challenge remains helping patients decide what to do next.

The condition refers to cancerous cells within milk ducts and has been called “Stage 0 Cancer,” because the cells have not left their area of origin.

A debate has ensued as to whether the condition should be referred to as cancer at all. About 60,000 cases of DCIS are diagnosed each year, and they make up 20 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses.

The study found that lumpectomy or mastectomy for DCIS reduced recurrence of breast cancer in the same breast, but did not reduce the risk of death from breast cancer.

Concerns raised by the study include finding that women younger than 35 and black women diagnosed with DCIS faced a higher rate of death from breast cancer at

20 years in the study, at 7.8 percent and 7 percent respectively.
