From time and time again, African history and stories have been told through an Eurocentric perspective. Today, due to the geopolitical and socioeconomic climate which surrounds us history seems to repeat itself. My photographs seek to tell the African story in its honesty and entirety. Africa is not just a destination. it is not just any other continent on earth. Africa is rich; in history, art and culture. Let my illustrations bring these to life. Africa Pamoyo pedu.

Drawing its inspiration from the people around, the people who live in these communities, PAMOYO is a potrayal of life.. Part 1 of the PAMOYO series focuses on an area called Sihlengeni in Matabeleland South. Formerly characterised as a ‘reserve area’ by the British colonial government, the Black indigenous people were restricted to these areas. Characterised by dry arid conditions, minimal arable land and lower water levels these areas became the source of labour for the nearby white minority owned farms. Today, Sihlengeni is home to those who cultivated the land in the past and continue to occupy it till this day practicing subsistence farming, the Area is a stark reminder of Colonial Spacial planning.

PAMOYO draws its inspiration from the people around, the people who live in the communities. PAMOYO is a portrayal of life and every-day living. Part 1 of the PAMOYO series focuses on an area called Sihlengeni in Matabeleland South. Sihlengeni fell under the category of areas termed ‘reserves’ during the Colonial Era. Reserves were characterised by minimal arable land and lower water levels making it hard to conduct viable farming practices, a way of living which dominated the socio-economic structure of the Country at that time. Today Sihlengeni is home to those who cultivated the land in the past and they continue to occupy it till this day practicing subsistence farming. the area is a stark reminder of Colonial Spacial planning with little to show of the transition from that era. This first part of the series is a snapshot of a morning walk through Sihlengeni. Capturing the different aspects of life, a glimpse into their ‘morning routine’ and for some it’s the start to a beautiful day.
