History

Pamlico County was established in 1872 after several years of laying off boundary lines with Craven and Beaufort Counties, however its history goes much further back with a wealth of heritage – our heritage of freedom, the traditions and culture passed on to us by the generations of three hundred years which has been unrecorded, unheralded and unsung. The first citizens of Pamlico County were the Indians who, as far as is known, belonged to a great linguistic family of Indians known as the Algonquins, who extended from Canada down the entire Atlantic seaboard as far south as the Pamlico-Neuse area of presentday North Carolina. These people were living in villages along the coast. Navigable streams served as their highways along which they paddled their dugout canoes. One may find relics such as arrow heads and pottery shards along the beaches and in the woods.

Today along our highways and country roads, travelers enjoy seeing neat farmhouses, lush with crops, extending away to the woodlots; and one can admire the new residential areas being built next to stately 2-story and wing manor houses of the past. The familiar scenery is ever-changing and never alike: cut-over timber lands lie alongside well forested stands of pines and small areas of forests. Every so often there is a bridge which covers a creek bordered with tidal marsh grasses. Communities seem to stretch out their arms to reach neighboring communities - green lawns, camellias, azaleas, flowering shrubs, summer flowers, and collards in the gardens, all are a part of “Pamlico” living.

Within our community, we have two museums, the Pamlico County Heritage Center and the Oriental History Museum which share the tales and talents of our county ancestors. A historical landmark is the Holt Chapel Community Center which is undergoing restoration by many individuals and groups. The Holt Chapel Community Center had been a Rosenwald school, one of 5,000 schools built for black students in the South between 1912-1932. How they came to be built is the story of a partnership of African-American communities with Jewish philanthropist (and Sears Roebuck executive) Julius Rosenwald and educator Booker T. Washington, who wanted to improve educational opportunities for blacks.

Pamlico has remained a place for people to live and play among nature. In gathering her history, one can see where Pamlico has expanded with new communities, commercial and recreational areas illuminating the way for us to walk in the footsteps of great souls.

Sunrise in Sound Country and the sound of seagulls beckons wanderers to see the natural beauty that surrounds our home. Anglers and shrimpers idle out to their fishing grounds, bicyclists find the meandering paths along our backroads, and nautical adventures await the seasoned sailor. Our abundant wildlife along our fields, forests and waterways provides a picture-perfect backdrop to those who seek solitude in our region’s charm.

The best way to experience Pamlico County is on the water. Bays, creeks and rivers all provide an interconnected link to the Pamlico Sound estuary. Bring your own boat and launch in the many available boat accesses and marinas. For something more active, launch a kayak for a tranquil exploration in the many hidden nooks and crannies in our waterways

harnessing the power of the wind is what you seek, look no further than the Town of Oriental, the Sailing Capital of North Carolina. With more boats than people, this little village is known by sailors as the halfway point between New York and Florida when traveling along the Intracoastal Waterway. Interested in learning to sail or sharpening your skills? Certified sailing instruction is available. Sailing clubs, regattas, fishing and more is sure to keep you busy for days.

Fishing

Home to a large fleet of commercial fishermen, all of Pamlico County’s villages have a connection to the seafood industry. Watch fishermen unload the daily catch at several “fish houses” and seafood markets. Shrimp, crabs, fish and oysters are harvested here year-round and provide for a spectacular seafood dinner at our many restaurants.

LOOKING TO CATCH THE “BIG ONE?”

Looking to catch the “big one”? Pamlico County is a popular recreational fishing destination. Reel in a big red drum from the edge of Pamlico Sound, or wait for the magical tarpon to snag your line. Flounder, spotted sea trout, croakers and spots are also in abundance here. With many marinas, bait and tackle stores, and professional guides, you will have no problem with never letting that big one get away.

Outdoors

Our vast open farmlands, forests and waterways provide for an abundance of wildlife. In the summer, the Black Bear is always looking for a meal from a cornfield. The white-tail deer find our natural forests to be the perfect place for shelter. Fox and turkeys are also found among our natural landscapes. In the winter, Pamlico County is a duck hunters paradise. Situated along the Atlantic Flyway, the great migration of ducks, geese and swan find our secluded creeks a resting point. Waterfowl hunters from all over the country have found our hospitality favorable to keep coming year after year. With many hunting clubs and lodging opportunities in Pamlico County, any sportsman should have no trouble finding the perfect trophy to display in their home.

Farming, Mariculture, Aquaculture

Living off the land has always been a part of eastern North Carolina counties. It is no different in Pamlico County. Among the most popular are the production of fruits, vegetables, and grains. One of the newest ventures is Tidewater Grains revitalization of Carolina Gold Heirloom Rice which dates back to the 1600’s. Other contributions to the agricultural community are cattle and turf farming. As technologies have advanced, we have expanded into utilizing one of our most prevalent natural resources “water” to expand into Mariculture and Aquaculture.

Throughout Pamlico County, you will find several options to pick up some fresh produce. Whether large scale farms or roadside markets, both can be found along the heavily traveled corridors and backroads. What ever the season, you will find an array of local, homegrown goodness. Pick your own produce and fruit farms dot the region as well, so be on the lookout in May when it is time to pick strawberries.

Pamlico County’s agricultural districts are some the largest in Eastern North Carolina. In early summer, truckloads of potatoes will head to market and make their way to well known potato chip makers in the country. Cabbage and sweet corn are also harvested, packed and shipped to the major hubs in the region. By summers end and the

approaching fall, grain corn and soybeans will go from combine to grain bin, awaiting their turn at making the trek to market.

Out here on the edge of tobacco road, as North Carolina is known, you will still see the tall, green stalks of a bygone era of when tobacco was king. Sown, planted, suckered, picked, and cured, the long process to get tobacco to market is a long one. Etched in our history, much of Pamlico County’s farm history is forever part of the tobacco road heritage.

In today’s ever-changing world of farming, Pamlico County’s proximity to so much water has ushered in the technology of mariculture. Pamlico County also is home to a diverse, hormone free, grass fed cattle farm. Grazing on high quality pesticide free local grasses, high quality organic meat for your family is raised here.

Along the shores of the Neuse River,

Tee off at Minnesott Golf & Country Club. Under new ownership since April 2020, experience the transformation in progress! With beautiful scenery accompanied by a soft river breeze, golfers of any level should put this course on their bucket list. However, golfers may hear the echoes of a trumpet sound beckoning nearby “campers” to the mess hall for lunch. Or they may catch a glimpse of one of North Carolina’s ferry boats moving travelers across the river.

With a stunning setting and year-round mild weather, golfers at Minnesott Golf and Country Club can hone their skills on the green. Located on 253 acres of land fronting the Neuse River. Created in the 1960’s, the golf course has provided many visitors and new comers an opportunity to enjoy the game of golf without leaving Pamlico County.

With the beautiful views of the Neuse River and nestled among scenic landscapes and towering pines, golfers can expect to find a unique golfing experience in this coastal oasis of natural resources. Regular sightings of white-tail deer and other wildlife compliments the backdrop of the course beauty and tranquility.

Whether you come for golf or just to drop by the clubhouse for fellowship, you will find yourself at home here at Minnesott Golf & Country Club. The Live Oak Grill and Bar is a fully licensed restaurant offering a variety of traditional and healthy culinary delights.

Campers Delight

Pamlico County boasts a large number of youth camps along the river. Many children experience their very first adventures of a week at camp here. Offering overnight camping opportunities, kids who come here learn to make independent decisions, challenge themselves, succeed in learning a new skill and make life-long friendships and memories.

Here along the rivers, campers have the chance to focus on learning a variety of maritime and seamanship skills. With wide open spaces, plenty of water, fresh air, steady winds and team of instructors, the quest to ride the wind in learning how to sail or learning to swim builds confidence and character.

Being on the river is not the only activity campers will find, they will find just as much fun on land. Traditional camp activities such as tennis, golf, crafts, archery and athletics are also included in their busy days.

At the end of a day of fun on the river, the camp trumpet sound will echo across the river and sleepily Pamlico County’s visiting youth will “call it a day.” They will dreamily fall asleep to the sound of a gentle breeze and seagulls, all to do it again tomorrow.

THE NORTH CAROLINA FERRY SYSTEM

One of the most scenic places in Pamlico County is riding one of the North Carolina Ferry System river class ferries across the Neuse River. One can travel by ferry to and from Pamlico County via the Minnesott Beach – Cherry Branch ferry. The ferry system is Pamlico County’s only water route connecting our region to nearby Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and The Crystal Coast.

The free 20-minute ferry ride allows travelers to soak in 360° views of the Neuse River. Feed the seagulls or watch the local crabbers empty their daily catch from their crab pots or see the numerous sailboats over the horizon catching the wind in their sails. One may even see a pod of dolphins swimming alongside, while the waters are calm beneath the boat.

Riding the ferry is a memorable one. It is one of those journeys where you truly get to experience “where the land and the water meet the sky.”

Serviced by Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) located in the nearby town of New Bern, it is located just 15 minutes from the Heart of Pamlico County.

With over 225 miles of shoreline and water, we are situated along the shores of North America’s second largest estuary, the vast Pamlico Sound. The Neuse River runs along the Southern shore while the Intracoastal Waterway provides a more scenic travel.

By Land

Pamlico County rests on the edge of the Pamlico Sound and is accessed by two main highways, which at its crossroads is easily accessible in every direction. NC Hwy. 55 runs East and West, while Hwy. 306 runs North and South.

When it comes to education, Pamlico County Schools works to provide engaging classroom environments and opportunities that prepare its students for the world beyond. The approximately 2,000 student school system excels in several focus areas that are critical for providing a quality education: quality instruction, high academic achievements, a supportive learning environment, and a strong parental and community network.

Our public-school system serves grades Pre-K thru 12th. Because of our low population, our schools are known for excellent programs and activities, such as the weekly Elementary Spelling Bee, STEM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), NJROTC, competitive sports and athletics program, drama and music.

The diversity of our community and richness that it brings to our schools is distinctive for a small rural school in Eastern North

Carolina. We also have a public charter school, Arapahoe Charter School, that serves students Pre-K through 12th and the private, Pamlico Christian Academy that incorporates a daily spiritual curriculum.

Pamlico County also offers an early education program for children younger than Kindergarten age. Pre-kindergarten classes are offered to 4-year-olds in all three school systems and at the Pamlico Community Development Center. Several locally owned private day care centers are located in Pamlico County.

Residents can also pursue a college education at Pamlico Community College. Recognized as America’s No. 1 community college for students’ educational outcomes, the college offers a variety of degree programs and distance learning opportunities. The college enables residents to reach their education potential with the luxury of staying close to home.

Close to Home

Although we don’t have our very own hospital, rest assured Carolina East Health Systems in the nearby city of New Bern, provides quality, affordable health care close to home. Named the #1 Heart Center in the South, the medical staff and team members provide many services to our community that you would not typically find in other places. Carolina East Health Systems operates two clinics in our county. We also have Pamlico Community Health Services that offers high quality, affordable care in pediatrics, gynecology, internal and family medicine.

Dental, eye, and mental health services are also available in Pamlico County. We also take good care of our pets, veterinary service providers here as well.
