What separates architecture from buildings are the elements of soul and depth, something that I often dwell upon. Perhaps the unconscious is what makes architecture so evocative and meaningful. A poise of function and aesthetics; of function and emotion.

A Quiet Night’s Thought - Li Bai-

Based on the poem ‘A Quiet Night’s Thought’ by Li Bai. Many people go through life as a wanderer. We live our lives with no sense of purpose or belonging. While some may think it freeing and liberating to have no ties, the truth is we are all empty without a home. Within each of us there is a deep yearning for something or someone to belong to. Some of us forgets this over the years, and some are reminded of it strongly time and again. While some may be as lucky as to regain their happiness, many may try and never reach it due to unforseen circumstances.

Oftentimes, we may fall into a pit of sadness and pitywe turn desparate to find these things to the point of self destruction. Emptiness consumes us and we revert into a shell of our former self. In the end, there is nothing we can do except to accept and acknowledge that we are fated to go through life alone. Rather than looking back at all the thngs we cannot have, we should look forward to the things we can have.

concept./ Based on the poem ‘The Scream by Edward Munch’.

Insecurity is something that has a strong hold on every aspect of our lives. More often than not, it brings to the surface prominent feelings of anxiety and trepidation.

These feelings then accumulate and send us on a downward spiral. In social situations, we begin overthinking and begin an unhealthy projection of emotions. These imaginary situations begin to hammer on our sanity and self confidence and soon we get beat down by many insecurities in a never-ending cycle.

The brushstrokes prevalent in the painting are abrupt and hurried- this conveys to the viewer a sense of urgency.

The dull colours throughout the painting are scattered throughout the foreground.

A sense of despair can be felt because there are no visually stimulating or pleasing hues present. e colours come across as lifeless and flat. A combination of the colours used in tandem instigate a nauseous feel in the viewers.

The painting strokes are warped and portray a dizzying feeling that disturbs the viewer.

The entirety of the landscape seems to be moving and that creates a chaotic state, which is contradictory to the typical stillness and calmness of a natural view.

The origin character of every child is ‘play’, even for us.

The beauty of learning through space allows for imagination and exploration through different spatial experiences that enhances critical thinking skills and cognitive development skills. Spaces allows children to be curious, they allow them to play and learn.

The community of pjs7 is a lovely neighbourhood with low rise of 2 storey houses. The kindergarten is in harmonious motion with the surrounding buildings, with pitched roofs made of zinc (an element that was historic to the site, as it used to be a tin mining area) that indicates a uniqueness of the character. Spaces are carved to allow for the community to engage with the building and the existing environment.

The kindergarten’s impression is a miniature village, allowing for a smooth transition for the children to attend without feeling unfamiliar. It depicts little houses that functions distinctly from each other, allowing the children to understand each space in their scale. It allows for creative thoughts to take place as each space shifts different perspectives of the children.

Each houselike form is connected through a series of stairs and ramp that is linked through the two existing trees, in respect to nature.

Based on Life Between Buildings -Jan Gehl-

concept./ Many things go on to be sure, but both people and events are so spread out that the individual activities never get a chance to grow together to a larger, more meaningful and inspiring sequence of event. (Jan Gehl - life between buildings) Kajang is a conglomeration of differences in the sense that the young and old move forward in time, but the events are scattered although they coexist. The old and young cross paths each day, but do they stay to celebrate the usuals as a community?

The emphasis of experience in the microscale of Kajang weakens the bond between the community, various activities that are clumped and do not correlate with one another. Thus, opportunities are brought forward in the Community Centre, a common ground where its people dwell and establish their skillsets.

concept./ ‘The streets were filled with people of all kinds, all so very excited for the release of new films. They hop from one theatre to another, just to catch up with different movies.

But not today. Today goes by like every other day for the past 10 years, just like a ghost town’, said Mr.Tan who is working at the pasar, which was once called the Capitol.

Chow Kit is perceived as a colourful agalmation of different communities from different backgrounds. There are a fair number of businesses operated by foreign workers, whom some of their children are not recognized as locals as they are not successfully registered as Malaysians, which had led them to be ‘stateless children’.

The barriers between the different cultures prompted foreigners to be perceived as the minors of the community, limiting accessibility to basic needs such as education. Negative perception of locals towards the foreigners induces a sense of alienation and exclusivity, diluting the sense of community. Hence, the values of equality and acceptance are important qualities to form a healthy community.

A creative and cultural experience centre could be the possible breakthrough of this barrier. A place to commemorate the locals and foreigners and a platform for the diverse community to celebrate the different cultural events together. As the site sits in the Federal Cinema, once a hotspot for the locals to enjoy films, a centre of creative art and culture planted in this site will cultivate the interest of Chow Kit in the film industry once again. Programs related to creative arts allow for the foreign children and locals to participate, acting as a medium of expression that allows the children and youths to receive a form of education through it. The participation of the community regardless of their cultural background allows for cultural exchange to take place, and it will deliberately form a new sense of connection between one another.

Continual celebration of the different cultures bring upon changes to people’s perception, inducing a sense of belonging and acceptance as time goes by.

The site seizes an opportunity to enliven its past state, with a fresh generation.

concept./ Metamorphosis is defined as the transformation of one form to another, however often the origin or process of the transformation is neglected, or worse, forgotten.

Genesis aims to bring attention back to the origins and transformation processes. - with the form of the installation itself derived from the need to adapt in order to provide for better functioning display stand. Genesis also encapsulates the transformation of an architecture student through the years.
