Meet the Presenters Thursday: July 7 at 5:00 PM HoustonMarriott Sugar Land, Bluebonnet Room Houston Flute Choir - James Marioneaux, director James Marioneaux, director James Marioneaux has been the conductor of the Houston Flute Choir for six years. He also keeps a very busy schedule as a clinician for many bands in the Houston area and mentors several band directors and band programs in the Houston area. James is principal clarinetist in the Galveston Symphony Orchestra, principal clarinetist and assistant conductor of the Baytown Symphony Orchestra, and maintains an active private lesson studio. He was a very successful high school band director for thirty years before retiring. His bands have won numerous awards at the regional, area, and state levels. He has performed as a soloist with the Baytown and Galveston symphony orchestras, performing the world premiere of the Leroy Osmon Clarinet Concerto, which was written for him and commissioned by his wife. Although he is primarily a clarinetist, Mr. Marioneaux enjoys teaching all woodwinds, especially flute. He has had many very successful flute students, most notably Beatriz Macias, who now plays professionally in Europe. He is constant demand as a woodwind and band clinician and contest judge throughout the state of Texas. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 2018. Mr. Marioneaux resides in Kingwood with his wife, Christina, who is an award-winning middle school orchestra director, band director, and French hornist with the Baytown and Galveston symphonies.

She also plays bass flute in the Houston Flute Choir.

Meet the Presenters Friday: July 8 at 7:00 AM HoustonMarriott Sugar Land, Bluebonnet Room Marcia Neel, Guest Speaker Marcia Neel, speaker A music educator for 22 years and Coordinator of Secondary Fine Arts in the Clark County School District (Las Vegas) for an additional 14 years, Marcia built a comprehensive district-wide program that served over 55,000 students in elective middle and high school vocal and instrumental music. She now serves as president of Music Education Consultants, Inc., a consortium of music education professionals which works with educational organizations, arts associations, and school districts to foster the growth and breadth of standards-based, articulated music education programs including guitar and mariachi. Marcia is highly regarded for her advocacy acumen at the local, state, and national levels. She has participated repeatedly in the NAMM Foundation’s D.C. Fly-in to meet with Members of Congress to garner their support for increased funding for Music and Arts Education within the provisions of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).. In 2016, Marcia was named Senior Director of Education for Yamaha Corporation of America and subsequently, a Yamaha Master Educator. She also serves as Education Advisor to the Music Achievement Council (MAC), a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization whose purpose is to assist directors in recruiting and retaining students in instrumental music programs through effective professional development programs. Neel also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) and contributing author to School Band and Orchestra (SBO) Magazine; InTuneMonthly.com; MSFQ.org/Guide Monthly Recruitment, Retention and Success Tips; and the National Federation of State High School (NFHS) Music Association.

Meet the Presenters Friday: July 8 at 8:00 AM HoustonMarriott Sugar Land, Bluebonnet Room Flute Fundamentals: Light at the End of the Tunnel Charlotte Royall & Mary Santarelli, clinicians Your lifeline to pull you through the storm is getting back to FUNDAMENTALS. Flutes, taught well, will weather any storm.

Charlotte Royall, clinician Charlotte Royall is retired Director of Bands at The Woodlands College Park HS. Prior to College Park, she taught at Wells Middle School and Bammel Middle School in Spring, ISD, and Knox JH in Conroe ISD. She graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in music education, and a master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting from Sam Houston State University. Mrs. Royall’s middle school performing ensembles earned consistent Sweepstakes and Outstanding in Class awards. In 1990, the Bammel MS Symphonic Band was named the Texas Music Educators Association Class CC State Honor Band and performed at the state convention in San Antonio, in 1991. The band was a top three finalist in the Class CCC State Honor Band competition in 1996 and 1998. The College Park HS band consistently earned Superior ratings at UIL Marching and Concert and Sightreading contest in every year of its existence, also receiving Outstanding in Class Awards at marching and concert festivals. In 2010, the College Park Wind Ensemble was a state Finalist in the TMEA Class 5 A Honor Band competition. They were also named 2010, 2012, and 2014 Winners of the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors. In 2016, the marching band competed in the UIL State Marching Contest, finishing in the top 20. Mrs. Royall has presented at several state Conventions, including TMEA and TBA, as well as the Midwest Clinic. She also conducted three ensembles at the Midwest Clinic. Mrs. Royall served a seven-year term on the executive board for the Texas Bandmasters Association and served as president in 1999. Mrs. Royall is a member of TMEA, TBA, TMAA and Phi Beta Mu. In 1999, she received the University of Houston, Moore’s School of Music, Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2009, she received the TBA Meritorious Achievement Award. Presently, she is serving Texas band directors as a consultant/clinician and mentoring student teachers as a field supervisor for the University of Houston and Sam Houston State University.

Meet the Presenters Mary Santarelli, clinician Mary Santarelli has taught band in the greater Houston area for 29 years.

She taught in the La Marque ISD at La Marque Jr. High, in Aldine ISD at Eisenhower HS, and in Pearland ISD at both Pearland Jr. High East and at Pearland High School as well as at McAdams Jr. High in Dickinson ISD. She is currently the head band director at Labay Middle School in the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. Her bands have consistently earned the UIL Sweepstakes Award in Concert and Sight Reading and Best in Class Awards at various band festivals. Her Pearland Jr. High East Symphonic Band earned the distinction of CC TMEA Honor Band finalist and CCC TMEA Honor Band finalist. Ms. Santarelli earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Houston where she studied flute with Bryon Hester, Principal flute with the Houston Symphony for many years. She was also a student of Mr. Eddie Green and a member of the University of Houston Wind Ensemble on piccolo and flute. She was nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers on two occasions and was chosen Teacher of the Year at Pearland JH East and most recently, Ms Santarelli was chosen Teacher of the Year at Labay MS. Ms. Santarelli was awarded Honorary Life Membership in the Texas PTA at Pearland JH East. Ms. Santarelli has been an active clinician and adjudicator in Texas for many years. She is a member of TBA, TMEA, TMAA and Phi Beta Mu, International Bandmasters Fraternity. She has served her profession as the TMEA Region 17 South Zone Middle School coordinator for many years. She is currently the TMEA Region 27 Middle School Band Secretary. She has maintained a private flute studio for 42 years. Her students are consistently members of the All District, All Region, and All State Bands. Each summer, Ms. Santarelli teaches at area summer band camps as a flute instructor and guest conductor. She proudly serves on the faculty of Floot Fire Summer Music Camp. As the proud daughter of two US Army veterans, she has also been active in the American Legion Auxiliary serving veterans and their families. She has served on all levels of this organization from the state level down to her local unit.

Ms. Santarelli lives in Cypress with her four-legged babies- her two cats and keeps very busy with her many crochet projects.

Meet the Presenters Friday: July 8 at 9:00 AM HoustonMarriott Sugar Land, Bluebonnet Room Great "Clarinet" Expectations Lucy Pascasio & Iris Gonzalez, clinicians Lucy Pascasio, clinician Luzviminda S. Pascasio is in her twenty first year of teaching but her first year as Head Band Director at Danny Jones Middle School in Mansfield ISD. The past seven years she taught at Kennemer Middle School/STEAM Academy in Duncanville ISD. Ms. Pascasio was the 2019-2020 Duncanville ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, Kennemer’s campus Teacher of the Year in 2018-2019, and a Music & Arts Educator of the Year Finalist in 2016. In 2017, The Symphonic 1 Band was named a 3C State Honor Band finalist. Prior to Duncanville, Ms. Pascasio taught seven years in Argyle ISD and was the Color Guard Coordinator. She is grateful for her successful journey there especially as an assistant director of the UIL 3A State Champion Marching Band in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Before Argyle, Ms. Pascasio taught three years in Lindale ISD and was actively involved with the Wind Ensemble’s TMEA 3A State Honor Band experience in 2006-2007.

She started teaching in Crosby ISD where she spent three years as an assistant director.

Throughout her career, Ms. Pascasio’s bands have consistently earned superior ratings at UIL contests and festivals. In May 2001, Ms. Pascasio graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University earning her Bachelor of Music Education degree. She is thankful for working with many influential colleagues and inspirational mentors. During the summers, Ms. Pascasio works independently as a drum major instructor and leadership coordinator. She also enjoys being an active mentor, clinician, and judge. Her professional affiliations include Women Band Directors International where she serves as MS Editor and Texas Chapter President, Phi Beta Mu, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and Texas Bandmasters Association.

Meet the Presenters Iris Gonzalez, clinician Iris Gonzalez attended West Texas State University in Canyon Texas. (now West Texas A&M U) Graduated with Bachelor of Music Education in 1981. She taught 5 years in Edinburg Texas where she had her first All State Student who was a freshman her third year of teaching in Edinburg. Ms Gonzalez went back to West Texas State in 1986 to work on her Masters degree.

She was selected to be the graduate assistant in clarinet to Dr Robert Spring. She was in charge of his clarinet studio and clarinet choir while Dr Spring worked on his doctorate degree at University of Michigan.Ms Gonzalez moved to Houston in 1988. She worked at Hodges Bend Middle School in Fort Bend ISD in charge of all woodwinds. As an assistant director in charge of all woodwinds the band was selected to perform at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago in 1992. And that spring of 1993 the band performed in San Antonio as the CCC Honor Band of Texas. One of the highlights of her career was to teach and conduct seven clarinet students to memorize and perform a solo with band accompaniment at both events. During summer of 1994 Ms Gonzalez was invited by Gladys Wrigth to chaperone, a bit of guest conducting and help the clarinet section by sitting in and playing clarinet. The high school group consisted of students from all over the US and Canada. They began in New York City and travelled to 8 countries in Europe on a 24 day performance trip. She was proud to bring her mother on this European trip.

Her mother, Raquel, was also a clarinetist in high school. In 1995, Ms Gonzalez became the head director at Hodges Bend Middle school. Her first year as head director the band was selected to return and perform in Chicago for the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic. That was the first year the school split so they lost half their students. For the Mid-West performance she commissioned John Wasson to write a brass ensemble piece with band accompaniment for the Dallas Brass. They premiered the piece in Chicago at 1996 Mid-West Clinic. It was also the 50th Anniversary of the Mid-West Clinic. As the feeder school to Stephen F Austin Fort Bend the high school band was selected to perform at Mid-West Clinic the same year on the Mid-West Clinics 50’th Anniversary.

Ms Gonzalez taught one year at Lexington Creek Elementary School where she tripled the size of the choir to 110. She also started a recorder club with 50 students. Upon retirement Ms Gonzalez began a small clarinet studio in Katy. She had her first All State student in her studio who was a freshman in 2008. This student became a four year All State clarinetist. Her private clarinet studio has produced 15 All State students. Since 2005.. She continues to teach and adapted to teaching virtual lessons during the Covid pandemic. Her students have done well and many continue making Region Band and continue to do well at Solo Contest. This year her sophomore student was the only All State clarinetist from all Katy ISD schools. Ms Gonzalez has served as clinician, adjudicator and conductor of various Region Bands and clarinet clinics. She plays in the Sugar Land Winds.

View the Session Handout HERE Theresa Baragas, clinician Theresa Baragas is currently in her eighteenth year of teaching band and has spent the past 15 years at Fort Settlement Middle School in Fort Bend I.S.D. For twelve years, Mrs. Baragas served as the Assistant Band Director at FSMS and is currently starting her third year as the Head Band Director.

Mrs. Baragas teaches the Honors Band, Concert Band, beginning brass classes, and assists with beginning percussion classes and Symphonic Band.

During her time at Fort Settlement MS, the bands have consistently earned sweepstakes awards and top ratings while continuing the long-standing tradition of the pursuit of excellence. In the 202122 school year, Mrs. Baragas was also nominated as the Fort Settlement MS Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Baragas graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor Degree in Music Education from Sam Houston State University in 2004. Her professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Band Masters Association, and Sigma Alpha Iota. Mrs. Baragas resides in Richmond, Texas with her loving and supportive husband Kyle, who is a Band Director at Travis High School, and their two children, Braeden and Leila.

Meet the Presenters Rachel Isaacson, clinician Rachelle Isaacson, a wife and mother to three children, is in her fourteenth year as a music educator and tenth year as band director at Cinco Ranch Junior High in Katy, Texas. She received a Bachelors of Music Education at Baylor University where she was drum major of the marching band. In 2008, she was awarded the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the School of Music. Bands under Mrs. Isaacson’s direction consistently receive recognition and accolades from festivals and UIL competitions. She recently served on the Texas UIL Sight Reading Committee and is an active adjudicator and clinician. During the summer, Mrs. Isaacson brings students together for music-making as Katy ISD Band Camp director. Mrs. Isaacson is known for her high energy and joyful spirit in and out of the classroom. In 2021, she was honored by being named the Katy ISD Secondary District Teacher of the Year. Her time teaching music and mentoring her students has been among the most enjoyable experiences of her career.

Lisa Stiles, clinician Rediscover the basics of starting low brass students: from music theory, to posture, mouthpiece and placement, hand position, horn angle, vocalization, air, and basic routines that I use with them daily.

Lisa Stiles, clinician Lisa Stiles has had a career that has allowed her to participate in many different facets of music education. She has 30 years of experience in JH and HS Band and Orchestra settings and has worked in districts such Cypress Fairbanks, Lamar Consolidated, Katy, Fort Bend and is currently the head band director at Alvin JH in Alvin, TX. While at Dulles MS in FBISD, the Honor Band and Symphony Orchestra, under her direction, were chosen to be perform at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, IL. Through those performances, the Chinese Cultural Bridge Center extended an invitation for the Symphony Orchestra to participate in a tour of China. The Symphony Orchestra also placed 2nd in the State Honor Orchestra competition that same year. While working at McDonald JH in Katy ISD, the Honor Band placed 10th in the 2C State Honor Band Competition. All performing ensembles under her direction have consistently earned Sweepstakes and many other awards. Lisa served as President of Region 13 for three years and is currently an active clinician, adjudicator for TMAA and is a member of TMEA, TBA, ATPE and Phi Beta Mu Service Fraternity. Her son, Nigel, is an outstanding musician and will be starting his senior year at West Texas A & M pursuing an accounting degree. Lisa’s outside interests include listening to live music, exercising, golfing, fly fishing, and spending time with her family. She is, also, very involved in her church, The Refuge, where she also serves on the production team. She is currently performing with the Houston Texans Pep Band, Deep Steel Thunder, and was a charter member of a local community group called the Sugar Land Winds.

Meet the Presenters Friday: July 8 at 1:30 PM HoustonMarriott Sugar Land, Bluebonnet Room Building Self Efficacy through Music Technology Krystal Williams, clinician Krystal Williams, clinician Krystal Williams is a Music Adjunct lecturer for Woodwind Method for the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She is currently the Music Theory Teacher at Northwestern High School's Visual and Performing Arts Program for Prince George's County Public Schools. In 2012-2008, She served as the Band Director at Western High School for 8 years and 14 years with Baltimore City Schools. Mrs.Williams attended Morgan State University as a Music Major 1999-2005, & as the Graduate Assistant from 2006-2009. She holds a B.A. in Music, and a M.A. in Teaching from the College of Notre Dame Maryland. She is currently serving as the Music Technology Chair for MMEA Maryland, the Professional Development Chair for The Association of Black Women Band Directors, a member the Women Band Directors International Association and a member of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women.

Meet the Presenters Friday: July 8 at 2:30 PM HoustonMarriott Sugar Land, Bluebonnet Room Moving and Thriving Forward Christina Benitez, clinician Benitez will discuss and demonstrate easy, fun and practical teaching techniques to use in the band and/or music classroom. These techniques, lessons and tools are designed to ignite and reignite student’s musical drive, self discipline and energy to become a better musician every year. She will also address the “pandemic learning loss” and how to gently and positively reset for older music students.

View the Session Handout HERE Christina Benitez, clinician Christina Martinez Benitez devotes her time as a music educator, music industry professional, active clinician, and speaker. Throughout her extensive career, she has taught students from diverse backgrounds and grade levels. She strives to make positive life experiences for her students through music education for the last 19 years. Her involvement in the Music Industry has awarded her with two Latin Grammys and an Emmy for her role as a musician, producer, and recording engineer. These albums are centered on her values of promoting bilingual education and an environmentally conscious mind. She is an active member of the Latin and Recording Academy since 2010. Mrs. Benitez received her Bachelor of Music in 2004 from the University of North Texas and her Master of Music Education in 2007 from Texas A&M University-Kingsville where she met her husband, Noe Benitez. In 2010, she received her audio recording arts degree at Music Tech Institute of Houston, located in the famous Sunrise Studios, where she was the Valedictorian of her class. In 2015, Mrs. Benitez expanded her creative talents by establishing her own fashion-based company. Her fashion line was shown in the Mercedes-Benz Houston Fashion Show where she received the prestigious award of “Best New Designer of 2015”. She has given invited keynote presentations at the Texas Music Educators Association, several technology seminars in the Houston and South Texas Areas. She is proud to have been invited to write several articles on music and technology education. She also has a profound interest in closing the gap in technology in rural areas of Texas. Currently, she is an Elementary Music Director and Technology Instructional Coach for the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD where she teaches and oversees five elementary music programs. She works alongside her husband, creative partner, and colleague Mr. Noe Benitez. They have two wonderful sons Noe Eloy and Emilio.

Creating traditions, systems, skill sets, and a culture of sectionals is the basis for student-led instruction and knowledge acquisition. There are no shortcuts to success—it still takes the same time to learn to play a wind instrument today as it did a century ago. The technologies we enjoy are simply tools; it is the master teacher who brings the learning to life.

View the Session Handout HERE Kathy Johnson, clinician Kathy Johnson, Adjunct Professor of Woodwind and Brass Techniques at the University of North Texas, has led a distinguished career of 40 years teaching music education in Texas. Highly respected clinician, adjudicator, and conductor, Mrs. Johnson serves as Artistic Director of the Dallas Winds Honor Band and is the UIL Region 2 Executive Secretary. Dedicated to music education and developing the individual young musician, Mrs. Johnson co-authors Musical Mastery for Band and the forthcoming Student Teachers Workbook. Bands under the direction of Kathy Johnson have been selected as TMEA honor band, performing at the Texas Music Educators Conference, have performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, have been the UIL State Marching Band Champions on multiple occasions, were awarded the Outstanding Band Program Award by the Texas Chapter of the American School Band Director’s Association and were selected as an Exemplary High School Band Program by the Texas Bandmasters Association. A member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, Mrs. Johnson serves on both the Ostwald and Educational committees. Her other professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu International Band Fraternity, where she is on the board representing the small schools of Texas, the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, where she recently received the Meritorious Achievement Award, the Association of Texas Small School Bands, Women’s Band Directors International and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. This summer she will receive the Meritorious Achievement Award presented by the Texas Bandmasters Association. Mrs. Johnson resides in Flower Mound, TX with her husband, Eric.

Teaching Music Theory Through Engaging Games Tamarie Sayger, clinician Using videos directly from the band hall, this clinic will be packed with games that help teach note recognition, rhythmic figures, musical vocabulary, musical terms, aural skills, rhythmic dictation and more! Participants will leave with a toolbox full of ways to teach ‘boring’ concepts in an engaging way. Many of these quick games get the kids up and moving as they gain an applicable understanding of how to understand and read music notation.

Tamarie Sayger, clinician Tamarie Sayger is currently a band director in Dripping Springs, TX and has taught grades K-12 in a variety of capacities over the past 25 years. Ms. Sayger has presented at Midwest, TMEA, TBA, KBA and IMES. Ms. Sayger is the creator and content developer for Band Directors Talk Shop, an online resource for band directors with over 10 million pages viewed. A 1999 West Texas A&M graduate, she is the coordinator for Band Directors Workshop, the summer intensive professional development event at WTAMU in Canyon, TX.

Meet the Presenters Saturday: July 9 at 1:30 PM North Shore Senior High School Wise Words Richard Crain, clinician Richard Crain, clinician Richard C. Crain has just completed a tenure as President of the Board of Directors of The Midwest Clinic. He previously served 21 years as Director of Music for the Spring Independent School District near Houston, TX. He also previously served as Head Band Director at Westfield HS, Spring HS, and Belton HS. His bands performed at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago in 1980 and in the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1974 and won honors in concert and marching contests in TX, LA, VA, and CO. Crain retired in 2000 from public school music education after 44 years of service. He He and his wife Gayle were the Festival Coordinator for the National Concert Band Festival from its debut in 1991 through 2008, and he and his wife Gayle were inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame in 2005.

Crain is Past President of the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association; and he served as Region Chairman and as Band Chairman for two regions for the Texas Music Educators Association. From 1977 through 2008, he served as International Executive Secretary of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and he is included in the PBM Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association and received the Contributors Award from the ASBDA in 2017. In 2009, Crain received the Outstanding Contribution to Bands Award from Phi Beta Mu. In 2017, Crain received the Honorary Doctorate from VanderCook College of Music.

He and his wife Gayle served as Executive Secretaries for the University Interscholastic League Region IX band, choir, and orchestra contests for over 11 years. In December of 2007, Crain received the Medal of Honor from The Midwest Clinic in Chicago for his contributions to music education throughout the U.S. and Canada; and in 2009, the Outstanding Contribution to Bands Award was presented to Crain at the annual meeting of Phi Beta Mu International at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Other honors include the Music Administrator Lifetime Achievement Award from TBA in 2006, the Richard C. Crain Fine Arts Building at Spring HS dedicated in 2000, the Distinguished Faculty Award from the SHS Alumni in 2002, the Texas Bandmaster of the Year by TBA in 1994, and the state and national 1994 Outstanding Music Educator awards from NFIAA. The National Band Association awarded Crain the Fellow of the Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts award in 2019, and that same year the Women’s Band Director International presented Crain with the World Peace and Understanding Through Music award. In 1974, Crain was named “Man of the Year” by the Chamber of Commerce of Belton, Texas. From the 1970’s through 2007, Crain was an organizer of the services held by the Fellowship of Christian Musicians at the TBA conventions, and he is currently a Deacon and the former Orchestra Director for Spring Baptist Church in Spring. Richard lives in The Woodlands, TX, and their three sons, successful businessmen in nearby Houston, are Scott, with wife Jennifer and children Lauren, Emily, and Joshua; Chris, with wife Melissa and children Jacob, Caroline and Emma Kate; and Steven. Richard’s wife, Gayle, was a former college business instructor and college administrator who worked with him for many music education organizations for 49 years, and she is an honorary member of Phi Beta Mu International. She also served on the Board of the TBA Wives Association and as President for one year.

Meet the Presenters Saturday: July 9 at 2:00 PM North Shore Senior High School Rehearsal Techniques John Benzer, clinician John Benzer, clinician John Benzer recently retired, after twenty years, as an Instrumental Music Education and University Bands Affiliate faculty member at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music in 2020, where he taught undergraduate woodwind instrument pedagogy classes and band director methods classes, and assisted the performing ensembles. Through the music education department, he was the Student Teacher Coordinator and was very active in providing beginning teacher job placement in school districts throughout Texas. He was the director of the UH Cougar Band Camp from 2001-2009. Currently, he provides conceptual brass and woodwind instrumental pedagogy information—as well as woodwind instructional teaching videos—through johnbenzer.com. Before moving to Houston in 2000, he taught for twelve years at Griffin Middle School in The Colony, which is part of the Lewisville Independent School District. He served as Associate Director of Bands for two years before being named Director of Bands in 1990. He is a 1984 honor graduate of Plano Senior High School, and a cum laude graduate of North Texas State University, where he received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1988. He completed his Masters Degree in Applied Music in 2004 at University of Houston. Mr. Benzer is co-author of Essential Musicianship-Ensemble Concepts, a published band method consisting of three textbooks which are on the Texas state-adopted textbook list. In 2014, Mr. Benzer is pleased to have been chosen by Hal Leonard Corporation to serve as a Hal Leonard Textbook Consultant.

During his ten years as Director of Bands, the Griffin Middle School Symphonic Band was twice named the Texas Class CC Middle School Honor Band, in 1993 and 1997.In 1997, the Griffin Middle School Band Program was awarded the Sudler Silver Cup, the most prestigious international award to recognize junior high and middle school band programs of outstanding musical excellence. At the 1995 Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio, Mr. Benzer was named the 1995 “Texas Young Bandmaster of the Year.” He was inducted as a member of Phi Beta Mu in February of 2001, and was honored as the Distinguished Alumnus in Music Education through the UH Moores School of Music in 2012. Mr. Benzer is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout Texas, and has also presented band director in-services and workshops in several school districts, and various clinics at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, the Arkansas Bandmasters Association Convention, the New Mexico Music Educators Association Convention and the Colorado Music Educators Association Convention. He was a guest conductor at the Indian Springs MS TMEA CCC Honor Band Concert in 2016, the Arbor Creek MS Honors Band Midwest performance in 2017, the Killian MS TMEA CC Honor Band Concert in 2018, and the Killian MS Honors Band Midwest performance in 2019.

Meet the Presenters Saturday: July 9 at 3:15 PM North Shore Senior High School Conducting Symposium Barabara Lambrecht, Ogechi Ukazu & Pam Klena, clinicians Barabara Lambrecht, clinician Barbara Lambrecht rejoined the faculty of University of Texas at El Paso in 2018 as Visiting Assistant Professor of Flute.In her duties at UTEP, Mrs. Lambrecht will teach flute, music education, and music appreciation.

Prior to her appointment at UTEP Mrs. Lambrecht served on the faculties of New Mexico State University as Interim Associate Director of Bands/Music Education, and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor as Director of Bands/Director of Music Education. She also previously taught applied flute at UTEP. She holds a Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas, where she studied flute with Mary Karen Clardy and conducting with Anshel Brusilow (Dallas Symphony Orchestra). She also holds a Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University, where she studied flute with Francis Bowen and conducting with Paul Ellsworth. Barbara has spent many years as an active band director, clinician, adjudicator and honor band conductor. She is active in Texas Music Educators Association, conducting woodwind sectionals yearly for the Texas All State Philharmonic Orchestra.She performs with the Roswell (NM) Symphony Orchestra, selected audition music for New Mexico All State, and served twice as the selector for All State flutes in New Mexico. Her other flute activities include presenting clinics and adjudicating flute solos and ensembles across Texas and New Mexico.Additional profession affiliations include Texas Bandmasters Association, National Flute Association, College Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu (International Board of Directors), Women Band Directors International. She has authored numerous articles in The Instrumentalist, Southwestern Musician, Texas Bandmasters Journal, and served many years as Consulting Editor for The Instrumentalist. She has authored two textbooks. Tau Beta Sigma honored Barbara with their Outstanding Service to Music award; Women Band Directors International voted her into the International Hall of Fame, and Phi Beta Mu inducted her into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame. In 2015 she and her husband Rick, horn professor at UTEP, were chosen as Texas Bandmasters of the Year.

Meet the Presenters Ogechi Ukazu, clinician Ogechi Ukazu is a doctoral candidate in wind conducting at the University of Texas at Austin where she also serves as an Assistant Instructor for the UT band program. Prior to this appointment, she acted as Visiting Instructor of Instrumental Music at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.

Ms. Ukazu holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Houston where she studied with Mr. Tom Bennett, Mr. David Bertman, Mr. John Benzer, Mr. Mike Warny, and Mr. Eddie Green. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Conducting from Sam Houston State University where she studied with Dr. Matthew McInturf, Dr. Brian Gibbs, and Dr. Aric Schneller. Ms. Ukazu began her career in Spring ISD where, in 2011, the Claughton Middle School Symphonic Band performed at the Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic.

Ms. Ukazu is an avid proponent of quality music education for all students and has presented on music education advocacy at workshops, clinics, and conventions around the state of Texas and country, including the SHSU Teaching in the Middle School Band workshops, the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, the Southern Methodist University Art of Teaching Music workshop, and the Conn-Selmer Summer Institute. In addition to her work as a music educator, advocator, and presenter, Ms. Ukazu works as a consultant and analyst for Deutser, LLC, a management consulting firm in Houston, TX that specializes in corporate & organizational leadership training, organizational change management, risk management, strategic planning and branding design & architecture.

Amongst the client projects she has worked on are the Greater Houston Community Foundation, Houston Community College System, PHI Health, United Way of Greater Houston, and the University of Arizona. Ms. Ukazu’s professional affiliations include College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, Tau Beta Sigma, and honorary membership in Kappa Kappa Psi.

Meet the Presenters Pam Klena, clinician Dr. Pam Klena is Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Oakland University where she conducts the Oakland University Symphonic Band, teaches elementary and secondary instrumental music education methods courses, and supervises student teachers. Dr. Klena holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she served as a graduate teaching assistant and studied with Kevin M. Geraldi and John R. Locke. During her studies at UNCG, she conducted the Symphonic Band, University Band, Casella Sinfonietta, Wind Ensemble, and taught undergraduate conducting courses. Dr. Klena earned the Master of Music degree from Central Michigan University where she studied conducting with John E. Williamson. During her studies she conducted the University Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble, and assisted with the Central Michigan Marching Chippewas. Prior to her graduate studies, Dr. Klena was the Director of Bands at Trinity Christian School in Sharpsburg, GA. She taught beginning, middle, and high school band, general music courses, and conducted school musicals. In addition to participating in the Georgia All-State Band, Dr. Klena served as coordinator and director for the Georgia Independent School Association All-Select Middle School Honor Band and Chorus. Dr. Klena earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Lee University in Cleveland, TN. During her time at Lee University, she traveled internationally promoting music education and leading masterclasses in countries such as Jordan, Brazil, and Kenya.

She also was a founding member of a local beginning band program that afforded fifth-grade band students with free private lessons taught by college students. Dr. Klena’s primary research interest is gender diversity among wind band conductors and is committed to furthering inclusivity in the field. Her dissertation entitled, Toward a More Inclusive Profession: A Qualitative Study of Female Wind Band Conductors, interviews nationally-recognized female wind band conductors in order to glean insights into their experiences and perspectives. These distinguished women share their motivations, career and life experiences in hopes of furthering inclusivity within our field. Other research interests include audience engagement and recruitment in the 21st century. She believes this continuing research will enhance the field of music and conducting while the existence of wind band music in the academic environment continues to evolve. She also was selected to present her literature review, “Toward Resolving Gender Inequities in the Field of Wind Conducting” at the Michigan Music Conference and was a recipient of the CBDNA Mike Moss Study Grant. Dr. Klena is also a proud member of the College Band Directors National Association, Women Band Directors International, National Association for Music Education, College Music Society, Conductors Guild, Sigma Alpha Iota, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

Meet the Presenters Saturday: July 9 at 5:00 PM North Shore Senior High School Houston Pride Band Concert Deborah Hirsch & David Lea, artistic directors Deborah Hirsch, artistic director Now in her 6th season with the Houston Pride Band, Deborah Hirsch is originally from Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in music therapy and music education and earned a master’s degree in music at Texas A&M University-Commerce. She also served in the 312th Army Band in Lawrence, Kansas before moving to Texas. Retiring after 37 years as a band director in Pasadena, Texas, Deborah enjoyed a successful career in public education. Ms. Hirsch was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2014. As a participant the Colorado University Conducting Symposium in June 2016 Ms. Hirsch studied under Steve Davis, Dr. Donald McKinney, Dr. Matt Roeder and Dr. Matthew Dockendorf. In June 2019, she attended the Conn-Selmer Institute where she was able to study, consult and collaborate with many of her band idols— Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Dr. Paula A. Crider, Frank Troyka, Michael Sweeney and Richard Saucedo. In the 2019, Deborah was honored to direct the Association of Private Lutheran Schools Honor Band and the Texas Region 19 Class CC Band. In November 2021, she was the guest clinician for the Texas Region 19 CCC Band and shared the podium at the Bigger and Brighter Conference of the Pride Bands Alliance. Deborah is an active clinician, judge and consultant across the state and is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Women Band Directors International and Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Ms. Hirsch is also a member of the chancel choir and bell choir at Bering Memorial United Church of Christ and a long time member of Pasadena Little Theater.

Meet the Presenters David Lea, artistic director David Lea has been a Co-Artistic Director for the Houston Pride Band since 2018. He joined the ensemble in 2016 and has previously served as trumpet section leader and is a founding member of Brass Tax, an HPB brass quintet.

David earned bachelor’s degrees from Texas A&M and Michigan State University in Psychology and Music Education, respectively. He earned his Master of Music Education from the University of North Texas. He has performed and participated in conducting symposiums with Kevin Sedatole, Craig Kirchoff, Matthew Westage, Michael Votta, Frank Battisti, Steve Davis, Joseph Parisi, Tonya Mitchell Spradlin, and Robert Carnochan. In addition to sharing the podium for Houston Pride Band, including the 2021 Pride Bands Alliance Conference, David has guest conducted for The Wind Project of the Houston Chamber Music Society, and performed with the Lansing Symphony Community Series and Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet. David is currently the Director of Bands at Michael R. Null Middle School in Northeast Houston and previously taught in Pasadena ISD at Bondy Intermediate. His bands have enjoyed successes at UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Evaluations, and local and regional festivals. As a private trumpet teacher, his students have made Michigan All-state, earned first divisions at regional and state solo & ensemble contests, and had the honor of participating in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. David is a member of Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association, Psi Chi, and Golden Key Honors Society.

Bands under Ms. Adams’ direction have consistently received superior ratings at Texas UIL Concert and Sightreading Contests, as well as other contests and festivals in the state of Texas. In 1997 the First Colony Middle School Symphony Orchestra performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. In 2002, the First Colony Middle School Honors Band was selected as a finalist in the Texas CCC Honor Band competition. The band also performed at the Midwest Clinic in 2002. The First Colony Middle School Band Program is a 2002 recipient of the most prestigious Sudler Silver Cup administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.

In 2006, the Honors Band performed at the 33rd annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. In 2009 and 2016 the Honors Band was invited to perform at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ms. Adams was chosen as the 2007 Teacher of the Year at First Colony Middle School and was named the 2007- 2008 Fort Bend ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. In March of 2009 she was awarded the Scroll of Excellence by Women Band Directors International. Ms. Adams serves as an adjudicator and clinician in Texas and throughout the United States. She has served as University Supervisor for student teachers learning to become band directors for the University of Houston Moores School of Music. Ms. Adams is a consultant and clinician for many school districts in the Houston Metro area. Her professional affiliations include Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Beta Mu and Sigma Alpha Iota. Ms. Adams is a member of the Women Band Directors International and serves as President of the organization.

Conference Organizers Crystal Hoisager, 2022 WBDI Conference Host Crystal Hoisager earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Stephen F Austin State University. She has been teaching in Texas public schools for 23 years. Her first four years were at North Shore Middle School and Cobb Sixth Grade Campus in Galena Park ISD. She then became a stay at home mom with her three children for the next five years while teaching master classes and private lessons in the Houston area. Mrs. Hoisager began teaching in Sheldon ISD at CE King Middle School for the next fifteen years. After a year in Dayton ISD at Woodrow Wilson Junior High, Mrs. Hoisager will become the first director at the brand new Santa Fe Middle School in Cleveland ISD. She also holds a Masters Degree in Biblical Counseling from Master’s Divinity School and has been a Biblical Counselor through the International Association of Biblical Counselors. Mrs. Hoisager’s bands have received notoriety in the surrounding areas. CE King Middle School has received Superior ratings and the coveted Sweepstakes award at UIL Concert and Sight-reading for 10 consecutive years. Bands under her direction have won numerous Best in Class and other festival awards. They have placed third in the region Area Honor Band competition.

Mrs. Hoisager was the Texas recipient of the 2017 School Band Orchestra’s 50 Directors Who Make a Difference Award. Professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and Women Band Directors International. Mrs. Hoisager is President-Elect of the Texas chapter of Women Band Directors Association and is the Women Band Directors International 2022 Summer Conference Host. Mrs. Hoisager resides in Dayton, Texas. Her favorite pastimes include traveling, cooking and spending time with her two grandchildren.

Her dissertation entitled, Toward a More Inclusive Profession: A Qualitative Study of Female Wind Band Conductors, interviews nationally-recognized female wind band conductors in order to glean insights into their experiences and perspectives. These distinguished women share their motivations, career and life experiences in hopes of furthering inclusivity within our field. Other research interests include audience engagement and recruitment in the 21st century. She believes this continuing research will enhance the field of music and conducting while the existence of wind band music in the academic environment continues to evolve. She also was selected to present her literature review, “Toward Resolving Gender Inequities in the Field of Wind Conducting” at the Michigan Music Conference and was a recipient of the CBDNA Mike Moss Study Grant. Dr. Klena is also a proud member of the College Band Directors National Association, Women Band Directors International, National Association for Music Education, College Music Society, Conductors Guild, Sigma Alpha Iota, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
