“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” —John C. Maxwell Dear Medical News Readers: Good to see you here in 2024! What I love most about a new year is how it presents a clean slate; a fresh new tablet on which we can map out the year ahead. It’s an opportunity to reflect, recalibrate and then resume…with much more resolve. In that, lies hope for something better. Nobody needs hope more than a hospitalized patient. That’s why we need excellent hospitals near us, and that only happens when we have leaders at the top who “know the way” and have the skills to “show the way.” This concept prompted us to feature the four CEOs who are leading Memphis hospital care in our InCharge 2024 magazine. We’re calling them the “pillars” of Memphis hospital care, and we actually photographed them next to the strong pillars supporting the old Sears building in Memphis aka Crosstown Concourse. We’re told that the pillars in that building will keep it standing through even an earthquake, which makes it a safe place – just like we want our hospitals to be. Don’t get me wrong, I know these four men don’t do it all alone. But each one sits at the “the buck stops here” desk. They are accountable not only for themselves, but for the hundreds of healthcare workers in their organization. Memphis Medical News has written about three of these fine men frequently over the years. Their longevity is reassuring. Both Jason Little and Dr. Coopwood were on our first InCharge magazine cover back in 2013. This was even before Little stepped into Stephen Reynolds’ position at the top. Shoes that he filled quite well. InCharge 2024 presents us with another opportunity to honor Dr. Reginald Coopwood for coming to Memphis, saving “The Med” and turning it into Regional One Health, with an even greater vision for it’s future. Long before Michael Ugwueke was CEO of the entire Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare system, I drove out to Methodist North and interviewed him at a time when he was leading both Methodist North and Methodist South hospitals. Every day he was driving back and forth to each of those facilities to keep them both running smoothly. I will fondly call Scott Smith, the new kid on the block. I met him for the first time at the photo shoot for this magazine. Although he just came to Saint Francis last summer, he is a seasoned healthcare executive who knows what it takes to make a thriving hospital run. He’s also a good ol’ Mississippi boy and quite likeable, which are bonuses! He’ll no doubt be an excellent leader for the Saint Francis Memphis market.

Be sure to read about our featured four in the cover story on the next few pages! I’m willing to bet you will learn something new about each one and their organizations. And when you finish the cover story, I hope you’ll flip through this beautiful magazine to see new faces, trusted faces and familiar faces in new places! Here’s wishing you all a successful year ahead! Please be on the lookout for Memphis Medical News in your postal mailbox and your inbox! Our next newspaper will come out in March and as always, we’ll be working hard to bring you the latest clinical and business updates and the phenomenal people who make our medical community known around the globe. Let’s keep in touch and please continue to let me know your thoughts and ideas.

The Pillars of Memphis Hospital Care Conversations with Memphis Area CEOs We’re delighted to bring you this exclusive update from the four men who lead our Memphis area hospitals.

Reginald Coopwood, MD Current Title: President and CEO, Regional One Health Birthplace: Nashville, Tennessee Where did you go to college and what made you decide to go into hospital administration? I attended college at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. I attended Meharry Medical College and then trained to become a general surgeon. I transitioned into administration in 2000 becoming Chief Medical Officer followed by 5 years as CEO at Nashville General Hospital before joining Regional One Health in 2010. What were your parents’ occupations? My father was a psychiatrist, and my mother was a teacher.

In recent years, Memphis has made it to the top of lists citing the most dangerous cities in the USA. In light of this and the shooting this summer at Campbell Clinic in Collierville, what do you think area hospitals and clinics need to do to protect both employees and patients, and what specific changes has your organization made to update your security? On campus violence has been a concern of the healthcare industry for many years because of multiple acts of violence against providers, patients, and staff. Our organization

or something else? How does your organization mitigate the issue? I can only comment on what Regional One Health is facing. Our number one priority is to elevate the quality of care provided and the services that we provide. As we make our transition into a true Academic Medical Center with UTHSC, our goal is to raise our standard of care to the level of Academic Medical Centers across this country. To achieve this goal, a new campus is necessary and securing financial support for this work is also a top priority. We are focusing on raising all the funds needed to completely replace our current facilities.

Nationally, there is a concerning shortage of healthcare workers. The president of the American Medical Association has recently sounded an alarm on a national physician shortage. Jason Little Current Title: President and CEO, Baptist Memorial Healthcare Corporation Birthplace: Old Hickory, TN, a suburb of Nashville Where did you go to college and what made you decide to go into hospital administration? University of Tennessee at Knoxville. I worked through high school in an imaging clinic and thought I wanted to be a physician. During my sophomore year, I studied in England in a program that compared American medicine with British medicine. I was hooked after that and wanted to make a difference as an administrator and policy advocate rather than a physician. What were your parents’ occupations? My mother was a third-grade schoolteacher in the Nashville public schools. My dad was a cabinet maker.

Striking the balance between making our facilities secure while also making it possible for our

communities to access our facilities when they need emergency and inpatient care is challenging. But we are committed to providing a safe and secure workplace for our team through enhanced training, controlled access, cameras that link with the police department, and increased security personnel. We educate and drill with our staff on security threats and scenarios to increase awareness and provide a safe environment.

payer negotiations, market competition or something else? How does your organization mitigate the issue? Healthcare care worker shortages are really our biggest challenge as a healthcare community. Please see my answer to 2. The American Hospital Association published an article in November 2019 titled, 5 Pillars Of Transformative Healthcare Leadership. That was before the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. What additional pillar(s) might you add to this list now? I don’t think Covid 19 added or replaced anything on this list; it simply accelerated the pace of change around each. For instance, the journey to create digital transformation has never been more compelling. Electronic transactions, telehealth, and home monitoring were popularized during the pandemic and are now expected offerings in a more robust delivery of innovative virtual services.

Nationally, there is a concerning shortage of healthcare workers. The president of the American Medical Association has recently sounded an alarm on a national physician shortage. How big a problem is this for you and how do you address the challenge of retaining not only seasoned, experienced physicians and nurses, but also the best new talent of providers to ensure optimum patient care? Mississippi State University for undergraduate and Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, for my master’s degree. I always had the desire to help people in every fashion. I take pride in that I had great mentors along the way. I was trained by Dr. Paul Pierce, III, an internal medicine physician from Vicksburg, Mississippi, who took special interest in me and who made and developed me into what I am today. What were your parents’ occupations? My mother was a 38-year public school teacher in Greenwood, Miss., and my father was a heavy equipment salesperson for Caterpillar.

In light of this and the shooting this summer at Campbell Clinic in Collierville, what do you think area hospitals and clinics need to do to protect both employees and patients, and what specific changes has your organization made to update your security? The security and safety of our employees, patients, physicians, and visitors is paramount. Prior to this tragic incident, we made a significant investment to enhance security on our campuses, and upgrades will continue to be implemented.

The national physician shortage is a real issue to contend with. Here’s the deal, physicians are a necessity for every hospital system. We don’t care for patients in our hospitals, our physicians do. If health care organizations are not actively recruiting physicians, those organizations are dying on the vine. To keep up with medical advances and our community needs, physician recruitment is a must. Our plan is to continuously recruit high-quality physicians/ healthcare providers to our market.

“The Place to Work” here in Memphis. The American Hospital Association published an article in November 2019 titled, 5 Pillars Of Transformative Healthcare Leadership. That was before the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. What additional pillar(s) might you add to this list now? Create and sustain a culture of positivity, accountability, and transparency amidst the challenges our health care workforce is facing. COVID changed the landscape of health care. We must adapt and craft a culture for health care to thrive in, so we can continue to deliver excellent patient care with a dynamic workforce. We must create a culture that fosters innovation, enthusiasm, and excitement among staff. Culture is key to developing a long-term but adaptable plan for recruiting and retaining quality team members whose values align with ours, ensuring our new culture will stand the test of time.

Michael Ugwueke, DHA, MPN, FACHE Current Title: President and Chief Executive Officer, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare Birthplace: Enugu, located in the southeastern part of Nigeria Where did you go to college and what made you decide to go into hospital administration? With the intent of going to medical school, my undergraduate studies were in pre-med. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the money to do so. The next best alternative was going to the School of Public Health at Emory University. One thing led to another, and I was hired as an analyst at a hospital, which began my hospital administration journey. What were your parents’ occupations? My parents did not have any formal education. My father started as a car mechanic and my mother was a market trader.

Our hospitals are microcosms of the community we serve, not separate entities. We are not immune to the crime in which our city is sadly becoming notorious, from car break-ins to more serious violence, including the murder of a physician while he was trying to provide care. In our facilities, we must balance providing a healing

and welcoming environment for all, while ensuring the safety and security of our patients, care teams and visitors. We’ve performed security assessments across our system and are consistently working to enhance our safety protocols, including training and equipment.

All the above. The pandemic’s impact on the workforce was significant and we’re only now beginning to feel a bit of relief. Technology created additional pressure and the need to innovate very quickly in a changing environment. Patients expect their healthcare to be as quick and accessible as their shopping or banking experiences. Reimbursement is also impacting financial stream, particularly in states where Medicaid has not been expanded.
