A chance to unwind after a week at work! Come to the session on a Friday evening: 7pm-9pm.

Our first Boater X competition which we are holding at Langham Farm.

Boater X (sometimes called extreme slalom in international competition), is a bit like the BoarderX which you may have seen in the winter Olympics, but on water.

£2 per session.

Make your own way there.

The sessions are for people wanting to use the moving water to progress their skills. There will also be some slalom poles up for people to use. It is not a session for beginners. People need to be at One Star/ Passport standard.

Paddlers in plastic boats will seal launch in and race down the rapid while completing a couple of compulsory manoeuvres (like a break out).

The only complication is that there will be between one and four other paddlers on the course at the same time.

There will be a sign-sheet for people to book the boats that are stored there. When those are taken, people will then be able to sign out kayaks (and other kit) in the preceding weekly sessions, as long as they can return it for use at the clubhouse by the following week.

People need to take responsibility for taking their own kit as we can’t sustain the mass loading of club trailer that happened last year.

The only rule is that you must keep both of your hands on your paddle, and must not deliberately injure another paddler!

We will seed the competitors so everyone will get at least three or four runs down the course. Weather permitting we will round off the day with a bring your own BBQ or picnic. Generally it should be a fun and relaxed afternoon on and around the river.

As always, the normal procedure at Langham Farm needs to be observed.

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

This camping weekend is for youth members.

We go to the wonderful Forest of Dean and paddle the River Wye on two days.

You need to bring • A tent (or share one with a friend, single sex tents only) • Sleeping bag plus mat • Overnight things - pyjamas, washbag, towel, change of clothes, etc • Waterproofs and welly boots • Canoeing things, which you can pick up from the club on the morning.

We pitch the big club marquee so that we can all eat together and if it is raining we have shelter.

We canoe on Saturday afternoon, a fairly long river trip and end up with some crazy jumping from the big rock!

On Sunday we play on the rapids in the morning.

Pam sorts out all the food and everyone pitches in to help with all the other tasks.

We have a campfire on Saturday night and toast marshmallows while we tell ghost stories in the spooky gloom of the forest.

The cost includes the transport, the food for the weekend, campsite fees and paddling on two days.

Youth members: please ask at the desk or email Pam for more information. A deposit of £10 secures your place on this trip.

Only tents allowed on this campsite - no caravans or trailer tents.

We get on at Saltford, paddle the 1/2 mile downstream to the weir at the Jolly Sailor Pub, and play on the sluice there.

A trip to Cardiff White Water Centre.

You need to be at 2 Star/ Discover standard to paddle the early session at 4 cumecs, and 3 Star standard to paddle the 8 cumecs flow.

We’ll take our play boats, but everyone is welcome - you don’t have to be a playboater!

We go as a group, but everyone signs in as individuals when they arrive.

You will need to bring a packed lunch and your personal paddling gear. You can borrow club kit on the morning.

CLUB BBQ - AT LANGHAM FARM Sunday, 9th September We set up the marquee, get the BBQs going and hey presto, we have a lovely club event!

Calendar in detail CALLING ALL ADULT BEGINNERS AND IMPROVERS NEW FOR SUMMER 2018 If you are still fairly new to the paddling and would like to improve your skills or maybe try something a bit different, then these short courses could be perfect for you.

We are offering 3 courses over two weekends and you can sign up for as many as you like… At £5 per course they are really good value too!

Each course is three hours on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon:  Skills course (kayak)  Introduction to slalom  Introduction to canoes.

How do I know if the course is right for me?

These courses will be very relaxed and designed to build confidence as well as improving skills. Ideally you will already have paddles with us for a few sessions—perhaps in one of our Adult groups or on a trip. Talk to your Coach, Kath or Pam if you aren’t sure.

If you are interested, let us know by email or use the paper application form at the clubhouse,.

Calendar in detail - all about Llandysul Festival LLANDYSUL RIVER FESTIVAL: AUGUST 1ST –5TH Last year several of us attended the Llandysul River Festival. We had a great time and would thoroughly recommend it to any other paddlers. It is suitable for all levels from beginners to 'good improvers', the water varies from a small flat lake to a grade 3 white water river. Both plastic white water paddlers and slalom paddlers will be catered for in the sessions which will be run. Generally the coaches will tailor the sessions to whatever the paddlers want to do or improve.

As well as the canoeing activities, there will be chances to try other activities such as coasteering, river swims, Ark'ing etc.

Due to the nature of the long weekend young people need to be accompanied by parents or other adults to help look after them. There are boats available to borrow at Llandyssul but is does get very busy (with close to 200 paddlers taking part) so it is better to take the boat or boats which you wish to paddle.

Llandysul - details continued The plan is the same as previous years (with a few tweaks to make it a little better) the main aim of the 5 days is to have some fun, try new things and take part in a slalom race.

The programme is Wednesday - Arrive anytime, set up tents and fill in any forms. No food is provided on the Wednesday but there are lots of options in the village. Registration is open from 5pm - 8pm.

Thursday - A continental breakfast will be available and the first groups will start heading out on the water from 9am. If you are planning on arriving and registering on Thursday then this is still fine and you can join in the afternoon sessions.

Lunch and evening meal will also be provided on Thursday.

Friday - Will be the same as Thursday two sessions a day with breakfast, lunch and evening meal provided.

Saturday - Race day, for those in division 2 and 3 we will have a course set on the river. For those that are new to slalom or in division 4 we will have a course set on the lake. Start list will be published on Friday.

Sunday - Sunday is funday, just lots of fun sessions based around the river. We will also hold another division 4 race on the lake.

The price is (FULL TICKET) £70 for the 5 days including, camping, food and coaching. (OR) (PER DAY) £20 per day including, camping, food and coaching. (OR) (JUST CAMP / SPECTATE) £5 per night just for camping. (OR) (JUST CAMP / SPECTATE / FOOD) £15 per day including camping and food.

River Frome trip - 5th May

By Rich Carter We always say a spring trip on the River Frome will be a low water one and cold.

Well I can confirm we had everything: a lovely hot day, water was up so there was no walking involved, but it was not too high to scare any one. Not only that, we were able to go over the weirs, except the first one. But we always have to walk that one, on safety grounds.

At Beckington weir there was a stopper that people could practise stopper work, and of course there was the sliding, jumping and diving in to the water. The main problem was getting paddlers out to have lunch, so we could move on.

Christine sank at the next weir – she just went down with the ship.

Phil came to the rescue. Well I think that what it was. Sad to say Kath took a dunking at Shawford Weir, but to take the open C1 down there is more that most of us could do.

All went well after that, until Rode Weir where Ian played hug-a-tree, and the tree won.

On to the finish, and I can proudly say we have a trainee Lets-be-sunkperson – Jacob.

All in all, I would say a relaxing and enjoyable paddle.

Ed: Kath needs congratulating for her persistence at Shawford Weir. Take 1: canoe over fast and Kath swimming after a struggle to get out. Take 2: a bit better with a quicker exit. Take 3: success. But who would have gone again and again in the Ocoee? Three times! Not many of us, I think.

Market Yard Slalom, 13th May Wall to wall sunshine, enthusiastic paddlers and a small army of volunteers made the Market Yard slalom on 13th May an easy event to organise, as well as being a great introduction to slalom for any paddlers who were trying it for the first time.

We were joined by paddlers from Poole Harbour Canoe Club and also Avon paddlers. One highlight was Emily and Maddie, Liam and Ben all being promoted into Division 3.

A total of 36 entries were made covering all the classes including C1 Women's and Men's. The greatest thing was the staggering effort made by all the volunteers who cooked, judged, took entries, timed, clerked, covered safety, ran boats, put up and took down tents etc.. etc..

The paddlers who visited us from other clubs were green with envy at the setup we had. So thank you to everyone who helped. See you all at Langham Farm on 9th and 10th June.

Ogmore Slalom, by Aimee Collins Wow, what another amazing weekend of slalom for Frome!

Everyone went home happy and with some new bling to show off. The Saturday started out cold and rainy, which didn't bother the paddlers, however it did bother our amazing spectators, who got a bit wet. But as the day went on the sun came out and it turned out to be a beautiful day.

Aicha conquered the Womens Division 3 race, coming third. Jasmine sat on her tail with a fourth place. I was also in Div 3 with them, and came out with a win.

Furthermore Maddie Hobbs went home with a J10 medal to be proud of.

John Kent and Andy Lyall walked (or should I say paddled) all over the course getting Second place in C2. In contrast, one of our well-beloved coaches, in a luminous yellow boat, somehow managed to get himself a 50 second penalty, but still won. Well he lost too, because he was the only competitor in his category. Not only did he get a penalty but he left his own son behind and poor Toby was seen chasing him down the path.

On Sunday we started the day shivering and dripping wet from the rain. Therefore, our only choice was to treat ourselves to a delicious hot chocolate and a few sweeties.

As the day continued the sun came out from behind the clouds, so much so some people were even brave enough to take their cags off. In Division 3, Jasmine and I did one for the team, taking Third and First places respectively. As well as this Toby got a Third in the Mens Division 3 and Alfie Symes came out in fourth place. Chris and I took the brave decision to do a C2 together! It turns out it wasn't all bad because we won! And chasing us down were our fellow slalomists, John and Andy in second place.

So, overall it was a pretty fantastic weekend for Frome Canoe Club and I'm sure everyone is as proud as I am.

Ed: thank you Aimee for this lovely report. And what an achievement for you, with Firsts on both days in Womens K1 and a First in C2. Well done!

Bits and Pieces SLALOM CANOE CHALLENGE - ARE YOU UP FOR IT? At FCC we are getting pretty good at paddling kayaks in slaloms but we’re not so good in the Canoe Classes, so here it is: a new challenge from Chris.

I will compile a ranking list based on the results which any member can achieve paddling in either a C1 or C2 in the following slaloms: Market Yard (13th May, div 4/open), Winchester (20th May, div 4/open), Ogmore (26th and 27th May double div 3/4 open), Langham Farm (June 9th and 10th double div 4/open).

I will take each paddler’s best three results so don’t worry if you can’t make it to all the races.

The main prize is the bragging rights of how well you can do, but I will also come up with a small trophy or prize for the most successful paddlers in C1 or C2.

We have a C2 and two C1s at Market Yard and another C2 and an old C1 at Langham Farm so there are enough boats to go around. Let’s see them out on the river on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday night also.

John, Ben or myself can help with some coaching, if you want some.

George got busy at Langham Farm recently and felled an ash tree which was leaning on a one of our slalom posts. He also cut trees back on river right.

Bits and Pieces CALLING ALL YOUTH MEMBERS! The first meeting of the YPC was held on 22nd May, and it was a lively meeting with lots of discussion and lots of ideas flying around.

Currently the young people are working on designs for jumpers and T-shirts and they will be bringing ideas to the next meeting. They also want to do another fundraiser for the club, possibly to raise money for another playboat. More about this as it develops.

The requests for activities include: • More things at Langham Farm • Playboating trips, eg to Symonds Yat or Saltford • Open day on a Sunday Independent Market day to show-case the club.

• Polo tournament at Market Yard.

Lots and lots of ideas!

The next meeting is Tuesday, 26th June at the clubhouse. All young people are invited.

The Worcester Ring Challenge is a 15 or 20 mile circular event through the beautiful Worcestershire countryside. This year it is on Saturday, 14 July 2018.

About the Ring.

Canoeing and kayaking are “Assumed risk” – “Water contact sports” that may carry attendant risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks, and be responsible for their own action and involvement.
