Symonds Yat Slalom hosted a double victory for the Johnson brothers, with Otto claiming first place and shooting into division 2 and Finn, making FCC history, by climbing 2 divisions in a short season, positioning himself for next season in Div 1.

Jacob gained promotion to Division 1 in C1, when he competed at Shepperton on 20th October. Jacob is now in Division 1 for both K1 and C1. Another First for the Club. And the other good news is that Jacob has been offered a place on the SRS, the next squad up from where he has been this year. WELL DONE!

Calendar in detail - Pool stuff FRIDAY POOL SESSIONS

CANOE POLO AT THE POOL

FRIDAYS, 8-9pm .

FROME SPORTS AND FITNESS CENTRE, BA11 2SA

Twice a month we fit a canoe polo game into pool sessions: a contact game and a non contact game.

How they work:  Find us in the Frome Sports and

Fitness Centre foyer at 7.45pm.  Bring swimming costume, towel, 

 



session charge - £3.50.

We divide up the one-hour into smaller ‘paddling slots’ so that everyone can get a go. This means that you may get 30 minutes in a kayak, but on a busy night the paddling slots will be 20 minutes.

When you pay, choose the session you want to paddle in.

You don’t need to wear a buoyancy aid or helmet (unless you are playing polo).

If you want to bring your own kayak, it must be VERY clean. Bring it in via the fire exit.

The contact game, for experienced paddlers, needs a good roll or you could be swimming a lot! These sessions are on the second Friday of the month.

November 9th December 7th The non contact game, on the last Friday of the month.

November 23rd December 21st

CHRISTMAS BREAK: NO SESSIONS ON 28th December and 4th January

We timetable the polo games into one of the paddling slots of the night. So when you want to take part, let us know on the desk when you sign in.

We provide buoyancy aids, helmets and club paddles for these games so that people are properly protected.

Slalom - from Chris Paddlers who are going to compete next year will find that if you are able to keep up your training over the winter, then you will find yourself at a real advantage at the start of next season. This year there are more opportunities than ever to keep up that training over this coming winter.

Wednesdays at 4.30pm Chris is running a session aimed primarily at paddlers in Division 3, but those who want to work on slalom skills can come along too.

Wednesdays at 6.30pm John is running a session aimed at experienced paddlers who want to do some harder training. It will be dark so there will be less gate work and more hard paddling!

Saturday 8th December Sunday 20th January Saturday 16th February These are the dates for some white water slalom training days which Chris is running. They are aimed at paddlers in Division 2and the top of Division 3.

Winter slalom kit and plenty of enthusiasm are essential. If you would like to join in please ensure you talk to Chris and give him your contact details.

The venue and format will depend on water levels, the participants, availability of gates and the weather. Venues are likely to include Symonds Yat, Shepperton, Dulverton and Llandysul.

The days will typically involve an early start, with a couple of cars going on each trip. The first paddling session will concentrate on gate work with progressive or half runs of a course. After a break for a snack and a drink we will probably then concentrate on specific moves, making the most of the white water before we drive home exhausted after lunch.

Chris will circulate specific plans closer to each date.

The Barle is a beautiful river in south Exmoor.

The Dart is one of our favourites with its lovely water, challenging features and beautiful surroundings.

We paddle the section from Tarr Steps to Dulverton, a distance of 7 miles. There are many small rapids, mini play holes to enjoy, and the scenery is stunning on this lovely stretch of river.

There are three sections we could paddle so this trip is open to most abilities, but you need to be 10+ years, be able to paddle at One Star standard with some moving water experience and be able to wear a spray deck.

You need to be a good One Star / Passport standard, have done some moving water training (eg Tiverton) and be over 10 years old.

You need to bring a packed lunch for Saturday. The food for the rest of the weekend is provided.

You will need to wear warm stuff on the water and be able to wear a spraydeck. A waterproof packed lunch to carry in a kayak is essential too. (ie in a waterproof container small enough to go in a boat.)

We stay overnight in Powdermills bunkhouse in the middle of Dartmoor. It is absolutely lovely.

There are bunk beds so just bring a sleeping bag, overnight things and paddling gear.

You can borrow any club kit that you need. We just sort that out on the Saturday.

This trip is limited to 28 people.

YOUNG PADDLERS: FILM NIGHT

The River Usk is in South Wales.

The stretch we will paddle is from Sennybridge to Aberbran, a distance of 5 miles. This is a good introduction to white water. The rapids are straight forward and are reasonably continuous grade 2.

This event is specifically for our youth members. All are welcome.

Two things tonight: A white water DVD, and

Early in the trip, the hardest sections are encountered. In the space of a mile there are three successive rock ledges, the last and highest being about a metre drop. This can be portaged.

Planning for the Christmas Party on 12th December.

Remember to wear warm clothes and to bring food and drink for the trip.

So bring thinking caps - we want your ideas for a really special party event!

The River Ogmore is mostly a grade 2 river with lots of small drops to paddle over and play on. It runs through industrial Bridgend and then opens out into South Wales countryside.

Fun and games tonight along with a feast of food, all decided and chosen by the young paddlers.

This trips is ideal for white water improvers and above. If you have done Tiverton, Lower Dart or Barle, then this trip is for you!

All our youth members are welcome to join in. .

The stretch we do is about 5 miles long with an option of another 3miles to the sea. But we will see what the wind, waves and surf situation is on the day, as it can get ‘exciting’ in the river-mouth.

In teams of about 5 (and we make them up on the night depending on who comes), we will pit our wits against the Quiz Master, Dave.

The questions will include news, canoeing and general knowledge.

Last year we had some merriment and even banter as groups vied for winning positions.

These events are always great fun, and quite light-hearted! Do come!

Our annual event where we dress up and dine in style!

Limited to 30 people. £5 deposit secures a place Partners / family members are welcome.

Symonds Yat Slalom - 13th October

By Chris W The last few weeks of the slalom season can be a stressful time.

The need to bag points to gain promotion or secure a ranking position can lead to long journeys and nervous scrutinising of results.

This year has proven no exception! The days leading up to Symonds Yat slalom were spent studying the weather forecasts and watching the various gauging stations on the river Wye. At one point in September the question was whether there would be enough water, but as we got close, the question was just how flooded will it be? As it happened the organisers pulled out all the stops and we managed to just squeeze in a race on the Saturday. As prize-giving took place the river started to rise and by 8pm news came through that the Sunday race was cancelled.

Those who have been to Symonds Yat will be familiar with how wide the river is, set in the beautiful gorge beneath the famous rock. The awesome surroundings always seem to be reflected in the courses set with big tough ferry glides and open sequences of 'stagger gates' (downstream gates set so that you have to travel from one side of the flow to the other and back again). While this course proved little challenge to the likes of Otto, Finn and Jacob, who were all punching for promotion, it is fair to say that it did prove a significant challenge to Toby, Aicha, Jasmine and Alfie.

Practice runs took place early on. All paddlers had something to work on and first runs proved just how tricky the course could be if you failed to position the boat to point far enough upstream to allow a good ferry glide out into the current before turning for the gates. Finn showed us all how to do it with a nice 93.2s run with only one slight touch, placing him in first place in Division 2. Otto was inspired and put in a clear run to match his brother’s performance but in the Div 3 competition. I too had a clear run, but just maybe it wasn't fast enough?

We won't say too much about the other Frome CC performances, suffice to say they were good learning experiences. Lunch break was cancelled due to the threat that the river was on course to rise soon. So suddenly, before we had caught our breath we found ourselves back on the start line.

Aicha and Jaz were off first and both put in much improved runs. Jasmine stayed 10

Symonds Yat Slalom continued on track and smashed it with a clear run putting her in the middle of the pack, which finally put a smile on her face.

Finn went faster and cleaner, not quite enough to hold onto the lead, but still earned him promotion to division 1. Jacob stormed down the course to win the Div 2 C1, and Otto held on to claim victory in his class.

Toby also got a clear run which was a great improvement. Alfie sadly didn't get a clear run, but still had a smile on his face, maybe just because he had given the lady in control some hard maths to do adding up his score!

I suffered some very unsporting banter on the start line with my opponents egging me on. It worked because I had my best run so far this year, winning the ever-so-serious Veterans race.

Finn came 2nd in Div 2 K1M and was promoted to Division 1.

Jaz came 7th in Div 2 K1W and won her age group, J10.

Aicha came 15th in Div 2 K1W. Otto came 1st in Div 3 K1M and was promoted to Division 2.

Toby 10th in Div 3 K1M and won the J12 age group.

Alfie came 14th in Div 3 K1M with a great run. Well done Alfie as the conditions were pretty wild!

Jacob won C1.

Chris won his group in Vets.

I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for all the wonderful coaching we had on the Tiverton weekend.

I learned loads and the coaches were brilliant with each one of us in the groups.

One thing that I loved was how friendly and helpful everyone was from Rich who got out of his boat to 'catch' us as we went down Bolham weir; Gareth who, as I waiting to ferry glide across the weir, was really supportive and took the time to give me tips; and all the other members who were so friendly and welcoming, whether on the river or at mealtimes.

It was an amazing weekend. Roll on the next trip!

Paddle.. Paddle .. we hear from Chris We hear from members about their favourite bits of the club, their successes and their favourite rivers. Chris is one of the slalom coaches in the club who has supported, encouraged, badgered even, members to get out there and enjoy slalom.

What do you like about Frome Canoe Club?

It takes me away from the stresses and strains of every day life. I enjoy coaching others and helping them to become confident in a boat and learn new skills.

Which is your favourite river:

So many to choose from, so I will cheat and say North Wales, the Dee, the Tryweryn, the Glaslyn, the Conwy, plus play spots such as Stanley Embankment and the Surf beaches … plus if there is no water, the mountains are awesome to play in.

Local rivers: which is your favourite section?

Most recently I liked paddling on the Avon, getting in at Saltford Picnic site. From here you can explore the wide river both upstream and downstream. There is also a play wave on Saltford Weir which provides a little bit of moving water when all else close-by is flat. Take care in high water as the Avon becomes fast flowing and the various weirs have fearsome reputations.

Top Tip from Chris: “Take every opportunity to go paddling” Tell us about the boats you have owned:

5 Slalom Kayaks, 1 Slalom C1, 1 open canoe, 1 wave ski, 1 Racing Kayak, about 8 plastic kayaks (I think), makes that about 17, but I only have 5 at the moment (excluding the kid’s boats). I once saved up my about £500 of my paper round money to buy a brand new Mystique Slalom Kayak. I raced it hard in div one and six months later sold it for £150 because it was so broken. Another year I snapped 5 pairs of slalom paddles (technically I was able to repair a lot of the breaks, but I think I snapped two shafts and three different blades. Favourite boats of all time have to be my Razor slalom kayak, it was an ex-GB team boat, all carbon and great to paddle. My favourite at the moment has to be my Redline, which is worn out, but still I find myself choosing that one over the various other boats in my collection!

Tell us some of the highlights in your paddling career.

In 1997 I was the first paddler not to be promoted to premier division in slalom, this was in the days when you could only get promoted to premier at the end of the year, I was gutted, so I am not so sure that was such a highlight! When I was 15, I went paddling in the Austrian Alps and paddled the biggest rivers I have ever been on.

It’s lucky we didn’t have waterproof or digital cameras in those days, otherwise I don’t think my mum would have ever let me out on a river ever again if she had seen what we got up to. More recently a highlight has to be the performance of our slalom paddlers this year at the Canoe Club. I am immensely proud when I stand at a prize giving and keep hearing “from Frome Canoe Club”… makes me smile every time!

What is your most embarrassing moment on the water?

So many! Forgetting my shorts and having to paddle in the freezing cold in a pair of boxer shorts, especially when I had to run around on the bank to string up the training gates in the frost. Luckily it was dark at the time, so not too many people saw!

Top Tips? (cheating again!) Take every opportunity to go paddling. Try as many different types of paddling as you can. Enjoy your paddling and don’t take it too seriously.

Any final gems?

The best paddlers have the worst kit!

Storm Callum changed everything for Llandysul Paddlers From Chris: While we were on the bank of the river Wye on the 13th October, news came through to some of the competitors from Llandysul Paddlers that there was some flooding taking place back on the river Teifi. By the time we got home, videos were being shared showing scenes of devastation. The most dramatic sight was that of a boat rack with 25 kayaks strapped to it floating down the river, getting crushed through the bridge and then carried on down the Teifi like a small pooh stick.

On the Sunday the true cost of the devastation was being counted. The club had lost a total of 5 trailers, at least 15 canoes and many more kayaks. Their drying room had been washed away, their tool shed complete with mini tractor has gone. All kit rooms were a mess, their office, toilets, showers, boat houses and bunk house had all been affected.

Llandysul Paddlers is a special club because it is the real heart of the community, in an area where there is much deprivation and little going on for young people. It gives them massive opportunities to learn, grow and develop into great paddling people. There is activity there every day of the year. Those of us who have been to the river festival will tell you about the infectious energy and enthusiasm the club breeds. Paddlers from all over the country have found themselves drawn to the club, and the paddlers from the club have found themselves taken all over the world through their paddling. Most of the losses suffered by the club are not covered by insurance as they were unable to gain cover. The canoeing world has pulled together 18

Devastated Llandysul Paddlers

to ensure the club is able to recover and grow stronger and better than ever before Large groups of volunteers have turned out every day to work on the recovery and massive progress has been made. 10 days after the floods the club held their usual club night on the lake, and just 2 weeks after the floods they are hosting the Teifi tour and a slalom training camp. However, the club needs our help! There is a fundraising page with a target of £30,000, to help replace some of what is lost. I have contributed and I would ask that if you are in a position to contribute please do! The fundraising page is here. Or if you prefer then they will be happy to receive a cheque in the post! Ed: out of interest Frome town centre used to flood.

The last one was in July 1968. The water rushed though the Blue House and up onto the road.

Here is a picture of the town centre flooded in December 1960. ‘Boots’ is on the left and ‘Iceland’ (Woolworths) is on the right.

Of course it doesn’t flood now, because over 40 years ago the flood prevention work re-routed the river in the town centre. So our clubhouse is safe. (And we are insured.)

However, we did have a few wry smiles when the EA, in 2006, made us lift our clubhouse plans up 50cm to prevent risk of flood damage.

From Somewhere in Dartmoor - Jaz and Toby speak Sitting in our caravan, looking out of Dartmoor which is fading into the sunset, we thought we’d share with you all the news from the last weekend of slalom racing of the 2018 season.

Jasmine said “Aicha, Aimee and I all raced on Saturday. It was a long course with a tricky first few gates and a long tiring sprint in the middle.

Said Toby “It was a fun and exciting weekend. A few too many rocks and a long course which has left me with very achy shoulders.

Aimee finished in a fantastic third place.

I came 7th and Aicha 9th. Today I improved and came 5th but Aimee smashed everyone else out of the river, finishing in fantastic first place.”

On Saturday Alfie and I raced in the div 3 K1M. I came 6th and Alfie finished 9th. Today I improved, to finish in 5th place, with my second run being 13 seconds faster than the first .

Chris commented “This was the first slalom on the Dart for a number of years. It was run by a few of the clubs in the south west region. The weekend was a great success. It’s a great venue (the adventure playground was very popular) and the organising team did an amazing job. Next year it is planned that a division 4 competition will be added and it will be the ‘South West Championships’, so we will have to take a big team to compete in 2019!’ Put it in the diary now. (same weekend as this year).”

LOOK HERE! Jasmine’s results make her the highest ranked under-10 year-old in the country. Chris’s double win at the weekend makes him Number One in the Veteran’s rankings.

The 2019 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup will take place at Lee Valley White Water Centre on 14th June.

The event is an annual series of five races, usually taking place during the months of June, July August and September.

Competitors accumulate points, and the one with the highest number from all the world cup races in their given discipline becomes the overall world cup champion.

IMPORTANT PLEASE BE AWARE - County Lines. What are they?

County Lines - are gangs based in cities such as Birmingham and London and are targeting vulnerable people in small towns across the country to sell Class A drugs. Frome has been identified as one such town. The way the gangs work is to befriend young people outside school gates, in parks etc and get them involved.

County lines gangs are a significant threat to our communities and the Police are asking for our help to spot the signs and act on our concerns.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? This slogan was thought up by the Youth group in response to a request from the committee to help us draw attention to the need to use kit sensibly and responsibly, so that we prevent damage and the consequent (and often large) cost of replacement. Last year Jack worked out that around £1000 of club funds was used to replace lost/ damaged kit.
