hether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you will quickly discover the unusual blend of innovation, culture and natural beauty that makes up Palo Alto and the Midpeninsula. Palo Alto is home to Nobel Prize winners, Silicon Valley CEOs, venture capital firms, Hewlett-Packard and one of the most renowned universities and medical centers in the world. The emergence of Stanford University in the 1970s as the nation’s leading high-technology research center paved the way for hundreds of startup businesses with connections to Stanford professors and their inventions. Thus, Palo Alto became known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. The Stanford campus itself is the biggest attraction, and visitors could easily spend a day or longer exploring it. At a minimum, any visit should also include a walk or drive through Palo Alto’s tree-lined residential neighborhoods (among the costliest in the nation), a walk in the foothills or Baylands and some great shopping and

WINERY PASSPORT DAY More than 40 wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains will open their doors on Saturday, Nov. 16, from noon to 5 p.m. for Passport Day. Hosted by the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association, the quarterly event gives participants access to wineries not generally open to the public, as well as special tastings, tours and the opportunity to meet one on one with the farmers, vintners and families who represent the roots of this unique mountainous wine region that stretches along the Midpeninsula between the bay and the ocean. Passport Day is held the third Saturday of November, January, April and July. Passport tickets are valid for one year. Cost: $75. Information: SCMWA.com

FALL FIESTA Celebrate fall, Day of the Dead and Halloween at Fall Fiesta on Saturday, Oct. 19, 1-6 p.m. The daylong family event is part of the monthly festival series Facebook holds at its headquarters every May through October. The fiesta-themed event includes a free kids zone with Halloween activities, farmers market, food trucks, crafts, dancing performances, carnival rides and multiple stages with live music. Cost: free. MORE ... Can’t make it to the mountains? The Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association hosts Taste of the Mountains Wine Walk in Menlo Park on Saturday, Dec. 7, 1-4:30 p.m. The winter winewalk includes wine tastings from 14 local wineries at more than a dozen shops along Santa Cruz Avenue in heart of downtown. HIKE AND HARVEST Fall is a great time to explore the area’s mountain trails, especially during early November when chestnuts are ripening off the trees at the Bay Area’s only chestnut farm. Docents from the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District lead guests on a 5-mile, moderately paced late-fall hike on Horseshoe Loop on Skyline Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The docents will take hikers through a
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS Decorated with sugar skulls, marigolds and family altars, Redwood City’s Courthouse Square is transformed into a gathering place for musicians and dancers during the city’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Sunday, Nov. 3, 4-9 p.m. The annual event, which celebrates the Mexican tradition of honoring dead relatives every November, is one of Redwood City’s largest cultural events. During the celebration, Catrinas (elegantly dressed skeletons) will be walking around the plaza greeting visitors. At 7 p.m., a procession will make its way through downtown. The event also includes a food court area decorated with papel picado (tissue paper), where an array of vendor booths will sell traditional foods. The San Mateo County History Museum also is open and hosts

family-owned tree farm and continue to an elevation of about 2,500 feet above Palo Alto to the 20-acre Skyline Chestnuts farm to learn how chestnuts are harvested from trees planted more than 100 years ago, shortly after the United States acquired California. Those interested in harvesting their own chestnuts can return to the farm after the hike. Reservations are required. Cost: free. Information: openspace.org/activities/docent/ farm-farm MORE ... Can’t make the hike? Skyline Chestnuts farm is open for six weeks every fall for u-pick and harvested chestnuts from the Johsen family’s 100-plus mature trees. Skyline is among the approximately 920 chestnut farms that have remained in operation in the United States following a fungus that nearly wiped out the American chestnut in the early 20th century. Those who visit the farm to pick their own chestnuts are supplied 5-gallon plastic buckets and leather gloves.

HOLIDAYS AT FILOLI ESTATE The 654-acre Filoli estate is keeping its gardens open this winter and decking out every room in the historic home with holiday decor. From Nov. 23 to Dec. 29., visitors can tour the mansion and its illuminated gardens. On select weekends, the estate will host an artisan market featuring holiday entertainment, food, crafts and decorated holiday trees. There is entertainment in the house daily and special entertainment in the ballroom in the evenings and on weekends. General admission: adults $22 (holiday events vary). CHRISTMAS MARKET Explore Menlo Park’s 90-year-old historic Allied Arts art community to find handcrafted holiday gifts during its

The internationally acclaimed male a cappella choir, brings its annual holiday celebration concert to Stanford University’s Memorial Church on Wednesday, Dec.7, at 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1978, the Grammy Award-winning choir performs everything from Renaissance to jazz to gospel to new music premiered by the group. VALENTINE’S DAY ON SHORELINE LAKE Every February, Mountain View’s Shoreline Lake offers a special Valentine’s Day getaway on the water. Couples can enjoy a gourmet picnic basket alongside the San Francisco Bay and then kick back on the water while a skipper sails them around the 50-acre manmade lake in a private boat for 20 to 40 minutes. This year’s Valentine’s Day getaways are available from Feb. 11-19. Cost: $35 for a 20-minute skippered ride for two; $60 for a 40-minute skippered ride. Availability is limited. Each is based on the code names for versions of Google’s Android mobile operating system, which are named after desserts and sweet treats. Area is accessible for photos. HP Garage (“Birthplace of Silicon Valley”): 367 Addison Ave., Palo Alto | This 1938 one-car garage is where college friends Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard developed their startup, Hewlett-Packard Company. Fry’s Electronics: 340 Portage Ave., Palo Alto | This western-themed site is the oldest operating store in the company’s chain, which was founded as an electronics retail outlet in 1985 to provide a one-stop-shopping environment for Silicon Valley’s hi-tech workers. (Site set to close in January.) Buck’s of Woodside: 3062 Woodside Road, Woodside | This iconic restaurant has gained fame as “the” meeting place for venture capitalists and tech entrepreneurs. (Reportedly, Steve Jobs is one of the few Silicon Valley icons who never set foot in the restaurant due to a falling out with the owner in the 1980s prior to its opening.) Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory: 391 San Antonio Road, Mountain View | William Shockley’s laboratory was the first high-tech company to work on silicon-based semiconductor devices, which led to the development of Silicon Valley in 1956. The original building is no longer there, but sculptures of packaged semiconductors, including a transistor and a diode, are on display at the site. Fairchild Semiconductor: 844 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto | This commercial building is where the group of defectors from William Shockley’s Semiconductor Laboratory known as the “Traitorous Eight” (led by Intel co-founder Robert Noyce) invented the microchip in 1958. Sand Hill Road: Menlo Park | Nearly every major tech company — Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter — has been the beneficiary of early funding from venture capital firms on this arterial road that runs between El Camino Real and Highway 280. For those who want to spend time on Sand Hill, the Michelin-starred Madera restaurant located at Rosewood Hotel (2825 Sand Hill Road) is open to the general public. Stanford Research Park: 3160 Porter Drive, Palo Alto | Founded in 1951 as the first technology-oriented park, Stanford Research Park has housed many electronics pioneers and high-profile companies including Steve Jobs’ NeXT Computer and Xerox PARC. Today it is home to more than 150 companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Tesla Motors, VMware and Ford Motor Company. Visitors are free to wander the 700-acre park.

SHOPPING Outdoor shopping centers, downtown destinations southernmost portion of the property, is a traditional retail center with big-box stores, including Trader Joe’s market and 24 Hour Fitness. The Village at San Antonio Center, which runs along San Antonio Road, underwent major renovations over the past few years that have transformed the corner into a modern, mixed-use center with luxury apartments, office space, parks, plazas, a luxury movie theater and about 30 new boutiques and restaurants.
OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Castro Street: With dozens of dining choices and a mix of music venues, performance spaces, coffee shops, pubs and book stores, the Castro Street area that runs eight blocks from El Camino Real to West Evelyn Avenue through downtown is a popular entertainment destination. Visitors can find everything from Thai-style rolled ice cream to vintage comic books.
Palo Alto’s California Avenue lies just south of the Stanford campus. Downtown Los Altos: Don’t expect to find big-box retail stores in Los Altos’ six-block downtown triangle. This treelined district, known for its quaint small-town feel, features a mix of locally owned boutiques, restaurants, salons and other services.

PALO ALTO Stanford Shopping Center: With 140 luxury stores and specialty boutiques, a mix of restaurants and cafes, sculpted gardens, cultural events and a European-style street market with locally grown produce, this 1.4-million-squarefoot open-air center attracts visitors year round from near and far. The center recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation that transformed its west end into a “lifestyle center” with gardens, grassy sitting areas, an outdoor fireplace and space for more than two dozen shops. Downtown Palo Alto: Centered along University Avenue, this pedestrian-friendly district packs in two movie theaters — including one with a working Wurlitzer organ — multiple galleries, a bookstore, an eclectic mix of retail stores, restaurants and bars, along a 10-block area that stretches between Alma and Tasso streets. This district is crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, when restaurant reservations are advised, and parking can be difficult. Many downtown retailers are open in the evenings to cater to the bar and restaurant crowd. Town & Country Village: Located on El Camino Real across from Stanford Stadium, it’s hard to miss the distinctive red-tiled rooftops and rustic wood storefronts at this outdoor shopping center, which features more than 70 specialty shops, restaurants and services surrounding a network of pedestrian walkways.

SWING THE RACKET Palo Alto offers many public tennis courts. Those closest to hotels are the courts at Palo Alto High School (enter from 25 Churchill Ave.) and at Rinconada Park (located at 777 Embarcadero Road). Both are lit at night. There are many courts on the Stanford campus, but you are expected to have a university affiliation.
BIKE AROUND TOWN The area prides itself on accommodating and encouraging bike riding. The most popular rides use Alpine, Arastradero, Portola and Sand Hill roads to create loops of different lengths. Skilled riders wanting to cycle several hours or all day ride up to Skyline Boulevard and down to the coast and back. In Mountain View, try biking around Shoreline Lake, located in the Baylands just south of Palo Alto.
DRIVE TO THE COAST Palo Alto is located between the bay and foothills, and the Pacific Ocean and the beach are only a 45-minute drive away. If you want to mix together shopping, eating and beach walking, your best bet is to head for Half Moon Bay.

GETTING AROUND Trains, shuttles, taxis, rideshare

alo Alto is an extremely safe community, and other than taking obvious precautions when out at night, visitors should feel comfortable freely exploring the city. Use common sense and extra care when using the pedestrian tunnels at the train stations, and avoid walking alone at night. Medical care is available either at the Urgent Care department at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (795 El Camino Real; adults, 650-321-4121; pediatric, 650-8536558; pamf.org) or the emergency room at Stanford Hospital (900 Quarry Road Extension; 650-723-5111; stanfordhealthcare.org). For after-hours prescriptions, Walgreens at 121 E. El Camino Real, Mountain View, is open 24/7. Call 650-961-7555. Palo Alto is served by a transportation network that includes the regional Caltrain system (800-660-4287; for hearing impaired, 650-508-6448 (TTY); caltrain.com), which operates frequent trains between San Francisco and San Jose; the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority bus system (408-321-2300, vta.org); and an extensive network of pedestrian and bike paths. Local taxis (Yellow Checker Cab Co., 408-777-7777 or 650-9999999) and rides through services such as Lyft and Uber are also available. While most visitors drive, it is feasible to land at either

From there, the Marguerite Shuttle provides service to locations on the Stanford campus and select stops in Palo Alto. Private airport shuttles regularly operate from both airports. During weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., parking in downtown Palo Alto and California Avenue lots is free for two hours (and parking garages for three hours). There is no enforcement on weekends. Day permits for downtown and California Avenue are available for $25. It can be difficult to find parking in the evening, especially on Friday and Saturday.
