Schools look to protect undocumented students Districts, colleges consider what it means to be a ‘sanctuary campus’

t Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, President Thuy Nguyen is racing against time to figure out ways the community college can be a safe haven — both legally and in spirit — for its undocumented students, of which there are close to 400.

Like many school officials

across the country, Nguyen is anticipating a crackdown on illegal immigration, which President-elect Donald Trump has promised, and considering what it would mean for Foothill to declare itself a “sanctuary campus.”

“The legal ramification” of the term, said Nguyen, a lawyer and

herself an immigrant, “is basically a communication to the Trump administration that there will be a resistance.”

Since the election, students and faculty across the country have lobbied for their institutions to declare themselves sanctuary campuses, a term inspired by sanctuary cities that vow not to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. A petition calling on Stanford University to take this action has collected more than 2,000 signatures

from students, faculty and alumni.

A group of Palo Alto parents penned a letter to the school board this week asking for the trustees to “show unusual courage in the face of the great potential harm posed by the Trump administration” and declare Palo Alto schools as sanctuaries for immigrant families.

The board, in turn, expressed strong support Tuesday for a resolution that designates Palo Alto Unified schools as “safe sanctuaries” for students and families

from immigration-enforcement officials.

As Jan. 20 fast approaches, however, educators at all levels are considering what the amorphous term actually means, with some eyeing ways to go beyond what they say is, at this point, a mostly symbolic declaration.

fter 14 brain surgeries over the past three years — including three this past month — few things can get 11-year-old Austin Morgan to jump out of his hospital recovery bed and leave his wheelchair behind more quickly than a visit from Oliver, Buster, Henry, Nikki and Garfunkel.

These aren’t your typical hospital visitors. This particular group includes two sheep, a miniature horse, a black lab and a blind lionhead rabbit with long tufts of fur encircling his face.

The eclectic mix of barnyard animals, part of the nonprofit Jasper Ridge Farm in Portola Valley, provides a sort of therapy for children up and down

the Peninsula who are facing life-threatening illness, homelessness and other challenges.

The animals go to hospitals, homes, homeless and domestic violence shelters and, more recently, county correctional facilities.

The nonprofit, whose summer camp was supported in part by a $5,000 grant from the Palo Alto Weekly’s Holiday Fund this year, also offers riding programs and animal encounters for children, as well as veterans, at its new 2.5-acre farm at 2720 Alpine Road, which opened in July.

“Austin loves animals and looks forward to coming out to see them every time, even when he feels really sick and tired

and doesn’t want to move,” his mother, Angela Morgan, said on a recent afternoon at Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, where the two have lived for the past year while Austin receives medical treatment.

The weather was chilly, and Austin had undergone major surgery less than 24 hours earlier, but that didn’t stop him from heading outside to pet Oliver’s woolly back, brush Henry’s mane and chat excitedly with the volunteers about the 20 or so animals at the courtyard holiday party.

“I know that goats eat cans, but I didn’t expect that they would eat roses because of the thorns,” Austin observed while making the rounds to greet each (continued on page 9)

alo Alto residents have deep concerns about what’s happening above the city’s shallow aquifer — namely, the millions of gallons of water that get pumped out of the ground every time someone in the area wants to build a basement.

On Wednesday night, a City Council committee waded into the complex issue of groundwater pumping by passing a slew of new requirements aimed at tightening the spigot and encouraging builders to adopt a less wasteful approach.

The rules from the council’s Policy and Services Committee build on regulations the council approved last year. They will also likely serve as a preamble to even more stringent regulations in 2018.

Provided the full council adopts the committee’s recommendations, starting in April, contractors engaged in what’s known as “dewatering” will have to demonstrate their ability to fill a pumped water truck in 10 minutes, limit pumping in residential areas to 10 weeks, offer to water trees and plants on neighboring properties, conduct pumping tests to gauge how much water is getting discharged and provide biweekly reports to the city.

In addition, the committee agreed to look at more significant changes down the road, including ways to get people to adopt construction techniques that would significantly lessen the amount of the liquid that needs to be pumped out.

The effort to beef up regulations was inspired by a grassroots movement that sprung up in the

Old Palo Alto neighborhood, where most of the basement projects have occurred, and gradually spread to the wider community.

While basement pumping is far from new, as several committee members pointed out, the issue has recently risen to the surface thanks to the statewide drought, a growing number of dewatering projects and the fact that most of them are in close proximity to each other.

In 2015, there were 14 projects that required dewatering because they were located near Palo Alto’s “shallow aquifer,” according to Public Works staff. This year, there were eight, which pumped about 140 million gallons of water, enough to supply all of the city’s water needs for more than 17.5 days (Palo Alto currently uses about 8 million gallons per day).

The slew of new rules adopted last year included requirements that applicants for permits supply a “statement of effects” of the groundwater pumping on nearby buildings and that they supply onsite filling stations to recapture the non-potable groundwater for such uses as irrigation and construction cleanup.

All of these rules will apply to the upcoming dewatering season, which will run from April 1 to Oct. 31.

The city has more sweeping ambitions for 2018 and beyond, however. On Tuesday night, the council committee agreed that the most effective strategy would be to provide incentives to developers (continued on page 12)

THOUGHTS AND BRAYERS ... It’s been a rough year for the donkey lovers of Barron Park, who learned in late September that one of the neighborhood’s two celebrities — Miner Forty Niner — passed away. This week, however, fans and handlers of the two Bol Park donkeys — Perry and his new companion, Jenny — got some good news from city officials when the City Council approved spending $15,000 in public funds to support a program that to date has been run by volunteers. Following up on a colleague’s memo, the council unanimously agreed to allocate the funds, which will take the form of a $10,000 grant (which would have to be matched by other donations) and a $5,000 contribution once the matching funds are in. The money will be used to support the Barron Park Donkey Project, which aims to raise $125,000 to cover five years of donkey-related expenses. To show their support for the donkeys, Barron Park residents attended the Monday meeting and joined the council and everyone else in attendance for a boisterous, accordion-accompanied rendition of “Sweetly Sings the Donkey” before the council took its vote.

Several residents also spoke about the great value that the donkeys bring both to the neighborhood and to the city at large. Doug Moran, a Barron Park resident who has served as a donkey handler for the past 20 years, talked about the many visitors who visit the Bol Park pasture on Sundays to see the donkeys. “I invite them to share Sunday dinner with a major movie star in a gated residence in Palo Alto,” said Moran, alluding to Perry’s star role as a the model for the donkey in Shrek. So why is the four-star celebrity forced to live off charity? Moran had the following explanation: “He doesn’t have an agent, lawyer or mobster in his corner when dealing with Hollywood.” The council then swiftly approved the request in the memo, with several council members thanking the volunteers and the greater community for supporting the donkeys. Mayor Pat Burt, delivering his final comment as a council member, lauded all the handlers, Acterra, James Witt

(whose pasture provides a home for the donkeys), “the broader Barron Park neighborhood and everyone else in the community who values and helps to support them ... Let us bray that this will be enough,” Burt said.

THE WEIGHTING GAME ...

Just when the Palo Alto school community thought the recent debate over weighted grade point average had been laid to rest, it reared its head again.

Superintendent Max McGee reported this week that the board “inadvertently” violated California’s open-meeting law, the Brown Act, which intends to safeguard the public’s right to participate in legislative decision making.

On Nov. 21, the board voted on two motions related to weighted grades after discussing the issue for more than two hours but without taking public comment due to the fact it was agendized as a “special meeting,” then-board president Heidi Emberling said at the time. “We learned that after multiple meetings on a topic, it is allowable to take action at a further meeting without allowing for additional public comment on the same agenda item only if the meeting is a continued meeting, as opposed to a separately scheduled meeting,” McGee wrote in a memo. “The subtle distinction between a continued meeting and a separately scheduled meeting changes the requirement for public comment.” At this week’s board meeting, board Vice President Ken Dauber proposed the board take a re-vote at a future meeting with time for public comment, and to publicly adopt a commitment not to make the same mistake again.

The majority of his colleagues, while regretful about their mistake, ultimately shot him down on the former given the amount of public input on the emotional topic the board received in meetings, emails and phone calls prior to Nov. 21. “I understand your pure commitment” to the Brown Act, said new trustee Jennifer DiBrienza. “I just think that when it comes to this topic, it was discussed exhaustively over many meetings.” Q

Feds direct Palo Alto school district to address violations Office for Civil Rights outlines remedial actions as it concludes sexual-harassment investigation

I

n a much-anticipated conclusion to a federal investigation into how the Palo Alto school district has responded to cases of sexual harassment at its two high schools, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has submitted to the district a draft agreement that outlines specific steps the district will be obligated to take to address its failure to comply with federal law.

Office for Civil Rights (OCR) attorneys also presented the agency’s legal findings in meetings this week and last to Superintendent Max McGee, Chief Student Services Officer Holly Wade and the district’s lawyers.

The findings, which will detail how the district mishandled several cases of alleged sexual harassment and thereby violated anti-discrimination law Title IX, will be released in writing only after the district has signed the resolution agreement.

The agreement is subject to negotiation and could change, but the agency’s findings will not change, according to the agency’s procedures.

The 11-page agreement reveals that the Office for Civil Rights expanded the investigation, launched by incidents that led to two separate cases, to encompass multiple allegations of sexual harassment, teacher grooming and sexual violence involving students, teachers and administrators over the course of the last three years.

The first case was initiated by the Office for Civil Rights itself in June 2013 in response to Palo Alto High School student publication Verde Magazine’s investigation into “rape culture” at the school.

The story detailed anonymous accounts of off-campus sexual assaults and students’ attitudes around rape and victim blaming.

The next year, a Gunn High School family filed a complaint alleging that the school district violated Title IX in its handling of peer sexual harassment and violence in which their daughter, a Gunn student, was assaulted and victimized by her former boyfriend, also a Gunn student.

Until the legal findings are released, the details of how the district failed to comply with the law can only be gleaned from the extensive actions in the draft agreement. The district will need to hire an independent investigator, to be approved by the Office for Civil Rights, to conduct proper Title IX investigations into the way the district responded to allegations that former Paly Principal Phil

Winston sexually harassed students, allegations that then-Paly teacher Kevin Sharp had an inappropriate consensual sexual relationship with a student and reports of off-campus sexual violence in 2012-13 and another in 2014.

In effect, the agency is asking Palo Alto Unified to conduct the investigations the district was obligated to carry out at the time it learned of the various incidents and allegations but didn’t.

The agreement asks the district to provide all investigative reports, underlying documents and interviews related to Paly teacher Ronnie Farrell, who was arrested this summer for allegedly touching a student inappropriately in a classroom, and former Ohlone Elementary School teacher Michael Airo, who was arrested in January for alleged child sex (continued on page 12)

News Digest Suspended Stanford band to appeal decision The Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band is fighting a decision university administrators announced Dec.9 that the group is suspended until June and, when reconstituted, will no longer be led by students.

In a press release Dec.11, the band said that it will appeal the decision, which university officials stated was made in response to the band’s repeated violations of university policy and a failure of the group to reform its culture.

The band has long been under scrutiny by the administration, but in May 2015, it was placed under several restrictions after the group was found to have violated university alcohol, Title IX and organizational-conduct policies, according to the university’s announcement of the suspension.

A fresh investigation into the band by the university’s Organization Conduct Board allegedly found new violations: band members showing up drunk to band rollouts, drinking pitchers of beer at campus restaurant The Treehouse and using band funds to travel to a rented cabin at Lake Tahoe, in violation of a travel ban.

The band, while not disputing earlier transgressions, denied the Treehouse alcohol violation and noted members have taken great strides to meet the university’s expectations.

The band also argued that the unique, nonconformist spirit it brings to the student body is invaluable.

The band has until Jan. 23 to appeal the sanctions to Provost John Etchemendy, which members say they will do.

La Comida, Avenidas settle dispute The nonprofits Avenidas and La Comida have reached a settlement in their dispute over dining space for seniors, a resolution that paves the way for Avenidas’ proposed expansion of its Bryant Street headquarters.

The settlement was finalized Monday and, with the settlement in place, La Comida has agreed to drop the appeal.

The groups were at odds in recent months over Avenidas’ proposed expansion, which would have reduced the dining area that La Comida uses for its programs. According to Bill Blodgett, president of La Comida’s board of directors, the redesign would drop the seating capacity in the dining area from about 140 to between 78 and 90. La Comida, which as been subleasing space from Avenidas since 1978, protested that the smaller space would hinder its ability to plan for the future of its dining program.

Since then, the groups worked with mediator Andrew Pierce to reach what both called a “mutually agreeable solution.” The terms call for Avenidas to help fund La Comida’s relocation to a new permanent facility that would offer more space than the Birge Clarkdesigned building on Bryant. Avenidas has also agreed to provide some additional senior services at the new location, as well as assist with transportation for seniors to the new facility.

Amy Andonian, president and CEO of Avenidas, said it’s not yet clear where La Comida will end up and how much her organization will be providing. That will be hashed out in the months ahead, as La Comida surveys potential downtown locations. Q — Gennady Sheyner

Police Chief Dennis Burns to retire Palo Alto Police Chief Dennis Burns, a City Hall veteran who rose through the ranks before assuming the department’s top position eight years ago, is preparing to turn in his badge later this month.

Burns, a soft-spoken and popular leader who joined the Palo Alto Police Department in 1982, plans to retire at the end of this year, the city announced in a statement. Police Capt. Ron Watson will serve as interim chief while the city conducts a national search for Burns’ permanent replacement, according to the city.

In the mid-1990s, he led several high-profile cases, including that of serial rapist Romel Reid. He was also on the internal team that investigated allegations against officers Michael Kan and Craig Lee, who were accused of beating and pepper-spraying resident Albert Hopkins (both were ultimately acquitted).

In 2008, after his predecessor Lynne Johnson was effectively forced into retirement for making comments many interpreted as endorsements of racial profiling, then-Assistant Chief Burns was appointed as her successor. He launched an action plan to regain the community’s trust, which included a training program on case law Constitutional issues and enhanced field-training for officers on the subjects of race relations and crisis communications. He also had the police department participate in a training program on bias-based policing created by racial-profiling expert Lori Fridell.

Burns said in a statement that he is looking forward to “the next chapter.”

calls on Trump to continue the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which allows undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as minors to stay in the country and attend school; and a second that states the community-college district will not release student records, unless authorized by a student or required by law, nor cooperate with any federal or state effort to create a registry of people based on any legally protected characteristics, such as religion, national origin, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. The district also resolved not to detain, question or arrest any students solely on the basis of immigration status.

Foothill College also is exploring more concrete ways to support and protect its undocumented students.

“When you talk about or work or serve communities that have always been living in fear or living

within a level of anxiety and now it’s accelerated, and rightly so that it’s accelerated in light of the language of our politics today, we have to do things that are really authentic and true to what they need — not surface work,” Nguyen said.

“That’s why I think we have to be thoughtful around that process and not be too quick to react to certain things that may be popular to do but are not necessarily helpful.”

Nguyen, along with the De Anza College president and the community-college district’s chancellor, joined hundreds of college and university presidents, including Stanford’s, in signing a letter that calls for the continuation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. She has reminded staff that any federal request for student information must go through her office and said at an immigration panel at Foothill last month that her default response will be to demand a court subpoena to release anything. She is also reviewing all of the community college’s processes and forms

to identify where students might be asked to share their undocumented status or addresses, for example, to see if there are actual legal requirements for doing so and assess whether Foothill could legally waive such a requirement.

“If there is no legal ability to make such changes, then we will also explore possible legislative changes in Sacramento,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen is also convening a group of administrators and faculty.

“What we are doing is exploring everything we could do that constitutes what one would call a sanctuary college without necessarily declaring that,” she said.

Nguyen is not alone in her hesitation. While some U.S. schools have answered their communities’ calls to label themselves sanctuary campuses, others have decided against doing so. Harvard University’s president, for example, chose not to, stating that it “offers no actual protection to our students. I worry that in fact it offers false and misleading assurance.”

animal. “This one’s fur is soft and very warm underneath. ... Oh no, look: He’s a sloppy eater!”

His mother said the animals have become a bright spot during his recovery, helping him forget that he’s 200 miles away from his home, his dog, his family and friends in El Dorado County. The animals’ regular visits have encouraged him to spend his free time learning everything he can about them.

“They all call him the ‘Dog Whisperer’ around here,” she said, smiling.

Executive Director Wendy Mattes said creating a carefree moment for children going through tough times is the inspiration behind Jasper Ridge Farm.

“Animals don’t judge you.

They don’t care where you live, if you’ve lost your hair to chemo or whatever else,” Mattes said.

“That’s the great gift with these animals. Kids forget why they are in the hospital or at a shelter.

I watch them bury their fingers in the sheep’s wool and squeal with sheer delight. I can’t change their family situation or their health condition, but for a very short time I can bring them an animal and just let them be carefree kids.”

Mattes’ own health struggles prompted her to reconnect with her love for animals nearly two decades ago. After being diagnosed

with multiple sclerosis in 1998, she decided to leave her 20-year career as an executive search assistant to pursue her lifelong interest in horses. She became a trainer and horseback-riding instructor.

“I didn’t know how many physical years I had left and didn’t want to spend them behind a desk talking on a phone,” she said.

This unexpected career change ultimately united Mattes with 12-year-old riding student Riley Church, who would became the catalyst for the launch of Jasper Ridge after she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 2009.

Mattes said when Riley could no longer travel to the barn to see the horses, Mattes borrowed a miniature horse and brought it to the girl’s San Carlos house for a surprise visit shortly before she passed away.

“I drove it to the house, walked it up the path, up the stairs and right into the living room,” she said. “I can still picture the look on her face when she saw that horse coming into the house.

“Something changed for me after that,” she added. “I thought of that visit more and more. It finally hit me that I could bring that same experience to other kids.”

Mattes rented a little piece of land from another therapeutic organization in Woodside, adopted a rabbit and partnered with local 4-H members, who loaned her small farm animals to take along on visits.

off-site-visit program, the Horse Buddies Riding program, Summer Camp and other programs.

Last year, the farm served 1,500 children and veterans; it’s on track to serve more than 2,000 this year at its new, larger facility on Stanford-owned property leased

by Webb Ranch. Jasper Ridge is using the portion of land at the family-run horseback riding facility rent-free for perpetuity.

Jasper Ridge also has access to the full-size horses at Webb Ranch, so it can provide on-site trail-riding lessons. In addition, the farm is seeking to expand its summer camp program from two week-long sessions to as many sessions as financially possible. The free week-long and day camps, which are funded solely by grants, provide transportation, lunch, time to interact with small farm animals, and lessons on horseback riding and animal-care for children from local hospitals, shelters and special-needs schools. A $6,000 grant is enough to provide 12 campers a week-long session.

Jasper Ridge relies entirely on donations and the help of 95 volunteers, who provide everything from loaned animals and poop scooping to assistance for children during trail rides. In 2015, the nonprofit raised $270,000 for programs. The nonprofit is in the process of raising $100,000 to build a covered riding arena, so its programs can run year-round.

Palo Alto family has made a $100,000 donation to the Palo Alto Weekly Holiday Fund in hopes of inspiring other donors to join them in supporting local programs for kids, families and individuals in need.

The gift is from a family foundation that wishes to remain anonymous and that has made similar gifts for each of the last five years.

The funds will be used to match the contributions of other donors.

“This generous Palo Alto family believes strongly in the mission of the Holiday Fund and the efficiency with which we are able to assist many local nonprofits,” Palo Alto Weekly publisher Bill Johnson said.

The donors, in a statement accompanying the donation, stressed their desire to support local causes.

“We grew up in Palo Alto and have always appreciated the extraordinary services provided by the city, the schools and the many community-based organizations. so quickly beyond my wildest dreams,” Mattes said. Q Information about the Holiday Fund is on page 10 and also at PaloAltoOnline.com/

Since the Weekly and Silicon Valley Community Foundation absorb all of the costs of the program, every dollar that is donated is distributed without any overhead or expenses deducted.

The Holiday Fund program has enjoyed ongoing support from the Packard and Hewlett foundations, the Peery and Arrillaga foundations and several other family foundations. Proceeds from the annual Palo Alto Weekly Moonlight Run, which is held in the fall and has become one of Palo Alto’s largest community events, benefit the Holiday Fund.

The agreement proposes a three-year monitoring period and also directs the district to revise several policies, improve its tracking of reports of sexual harassment and sexual violence and more regularly make public reports on the number of complaints the district receives. Paly and Gunn in particular will likely also see increased training and new school-climate surveys for

both students and parents.

McGee declined to state whether there is anything in the draft agreement that the district will challenge but did say the district will raise with the agency the feasibility of conducting new investigations into allegations that stretch several years back.

“Looking at the big picture, we intend to be cooperative,” he said.

He declined to give specifics about the Office for Civil Rights’ findings since they were shared verbally, he said, rather than in writing.

“We hope the district will now move forward collaboratively with the OCR in changing processes, so that future victims will be protected,” she said.

to pump in a less wasteful manner.

The proposal was championed by local architect Dan Garber, who has spent the past year analyzing the dewatering problem together with Keith Bennett, founder of the citizens group Save Palo Alto’s Groundwater.

Garber noted that most basement builders today use “broadarea dewatering strategies,” which generally means building wells and then pumping the water out of the ground to enable excavation. Because of the nature of Palo Alto’s soil, this often results in the surfacing of millions of gallons of water.

The alternative to this, he said, is to establish a cut-off wall to separate the basement area from the rest of the soil and only pump out the water inside the wall. Garber recommended that the city consider two sets of dewatering regulations: one for builders who use the broad-area approach and the another for those willing to go the localized route. The idea, he said, is to provide incentives for builders to use the latter approach.

The council committee agreed wholeheartedly and voted 2-1 to make the near-term changes and to explore incentives for encouraging cut-off walls that would take effect in 2018. Even Councilman Tom DuBois, who voted against the motion, only did so because he felt it didn’t go far enough. DuBois said the city should explore a moratorium on basement pumping and a fee for each gallon discharged. Transitions Sybil Rodman

Sybil Rodman, a former longtime resident of Palo Alto, died on Dec. 2 in McMinnville, Oregon, where she had been living for more than a decade. She spent her final days surrounded by family. She was 88.

She was born on Sept. 25, 1928, in Seattle, Washington, to Chris and Pearl Skullerud. Her father was an auto mechanic who owned a repair shop, and her mother was a teacher. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle at the age of 16 and went on to major in Latin American Studies at the University of Washington, graduating in 1949.

She met Robert Rodman, also of Seattle, at a social gathering sponsored by a church group on the University of Washington campus; it was love at first sight. Robert proposed on their first date, and they were married in March, 1949.

After a year in Pasadena, where Robert earned a master’s degree at the California Institute of Technology, and a brief stint in the California oil fields near Bakersfield, the couple moved to the Bay Area in 1953 and bought an Eichler home in south Palo Alto in 1955. They lived in that house for nearly 50 years, raising two children, Blake, born in 1953, and Gail, born in 1955.

An engaged and active stay-athome parent, she volunteered at her children’s schools, her Christian Science church and the Bechtel International Center on the Stanford University campus. As a tutor, she worked with both children and adults on their reading and

English language skills. She was an avid gardener, cook and reader and loved stimulating conversation. Over the years, she and Robert traveled together throughout Western Europe, Mexico, Central America, East Africa and the former Soviet Union.

She was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Robert of McMinnville, Oregon; two children, Gail (Angelo) Gordon of Central Point, Oregon, and Blake (Connie Hume) Rodman of Corvallis, Oregon; and seven grandchildren: Morgan, Heather, Chelsea, Lark, Nathaniel, Chloe and Claire.

Family members will host several private gatherings in the coming months to honor and remember her life.

Ernest Wormley, Jr. Bay Area native Ernest (Ernie) Nathaniel Wormley, Jr. died on Nov. 18 in Redwood City. He was 62.

He was born on June 22, 1954, to Ernest and Grace Wormley at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City.

After graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1973, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 1 at Crippen and Flynn Woodside Chapel in Redwood City. Interment will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 W. McCable Road, Santa Nella.

Juanita Radabaugh October 10, 1916 - December 3, 2016 In Loving Memory of Juanita Radabaugh It is with great sadness that we bring you the news that Juanita M. Radabaugh, aged 100, passed away peacefully in her sleep, with her daughters by her side, on December 3, 2016. Juanita was the beloved wife of Ralph Radabaugh, mother of Dennis; is survived by her three daughters in the SF Bay Area, Linda Gordon, Sue Alexander and Debra Gordon; her nine grandchildren Rebecca Ibel of Columbus, Ohio, Melinda McCabe of Los Angeles, Mark Gettys and Gary Gettys of San Francisco, Jessica Gordon of Los Angeles, and Will Gordon of Mill Valley, Chloe Gordon of New York City, Allegra Gordon of San Francisco, and Brad Radabaugh of Taylorsville, Utah; and her five great-grandchildren, Sarah Ibel, Quinn Gettys, Aiden Gettys, Aliyah Gettys and Jessica Renner; and her great-great-grandchildren Carson Renner and Austyn Moses.

Juanita was born in Rogers, Arkansas, where she was a beauty queen and valedictorian of her high school class. Awarded a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas, she was compelled to turn it down to stay near her family. Nevertheless, she remained committed to education and all of the women in her family completed college degrees. In 1936, after meeting and marrying Ralph, a dashing professional baseball player, she relocated to Toledo, Ohio where Ralph became interim coach of the University of Toledo nine, and then the Jim White AA Team. They raised four children there, from birth through high school.

After Ralph retired from Reliance Electric, Juanita and Ralph moved to Naples, Florida for a life of golf, card games and community, again making lifelong friends almost overnight.

Juanita made a big impression on everyone she met, from neighbors to club members, from Ralph’s co-workers to the many friends brought home by her children and grandchildren.

She will be remembered by loved ones for her creativity: she was an inspired designer of home interiors and clothing; she tailored and sewed original couture-quality dresses, gowns, jackets and coats; she was a skilled painter, toymaker and puzzle-crafter; and she was a terrific cook and baker, whose “ninety-nine” casserole was always her grandchildren’s favorite. Juanita also had high level skills in management and numbers, from home budgeting and family organization to bridge, dominoes, poker, and even her ability to count cards. She was a strong role-model for the three generations of women and girls in her family, for her family values, her high ethics and kindness. She took very seriously her role as family matriarch, and her most favorite activity of all was family gatherings. She always had time to focus on the youngsters, to hear a life story, to share thoughts and advice, and to help out in any way. She also loved the ebb and flow of politics, and was only disappointed that she didn’t live to see a woman elected US President.

Juanita loved holidays and birthdays, and always emphasized giving and sharing. Even when her family had to scrimp and save for their own presents, she would always find a way to share the spirit with less fortunate families.

Juanita fostered the value that no matter how

little you had, you still were obliged to share with those in need. Some of her daughters’ favorite memories were the holiday trips to delighted families, with cars full of clothing, food and toys. She even leveraged her own efforts by organizing Brownie troops, school groups and civic clubs “to do the right thing.” The family almost thought that Mrs. Claus must have been named Juanita.

Juanita moved to California during the Fall of 2005, as one of the pioneering residents of the Vi, and immediately made a group of close-knit best friends: Esther Benninger, and the departed Alice Chetkovich, Lee and Dixie Otterson, and Virginia “Ginny” Sherwood. This lively and loyal group shared many dinners, card games, adventures and events over the years, with Juanita’s birthday celebration in Woodside as the annual October highlight. In fact, Esther sat in the place of honor at Juanita’s right side during the recent joyous One Century Celebration, hosted by her daughters and their husbands, where she was honored by her family with a fulllength biography, written by her daughter Sue Alexander, and the following poem from the Gordon family: If I If I live to be one hundred, if I live so long, I want my wisdom lyricized in poetry and song.

I hope that my great-grandchildren are vassals in my kingdom, Attending to my every need, sitting at my knee for wisdom.

I hope my great-grandkids will dance for me, my grandchildren will attend, Because love is the only currency that earns interest when you spend.

It would be splendid to share stories about the best moments of our shared past, And that my birthday celebration doesn’t end a bit too fast.

I will kiss all my favorite people today, and cherish everyone who shows.

And I will be honored by far-away friends who have sent me videos.

Today will be my holiday, with all my loved ones well arrayed.

My dinner table guests are more precious to me than a gold key or a parade.

If I live to be one hundred, there will be just seventy thousand others like me, And all we really want for a present is to enjoy our legacy.

I don’t need to explore Jupiter and Mars, the comets or the galaxy; When I am with my loved ones, my heart overcomes all gravity.

If I live to be one hundred, all I want is more time with family!

October 10, 2016 Juanita’s family wants to express their gratitude to the Vi community and exceptional staff, who have been so giving to her and her friends over the years. The family members will particularly miss the walks around the pond, the rose garden, the beautifully maintained hallways, gathering around the fireplace and listening to the resident piano player.

A memorial service to honor Juanita will be held in January at a time and date as yet to be determined.

July 10, 1927 – November 22, 2016 Davis Walsh Baldwin was born in Winnetka, Illinois on July 10, 1927 to Margaret “Sis” Couffer Baldwin and John Richard Walsh Baldwin. Davis gently passed away with family by his side on November 22, 2016, while gathered for one of his favorite family traditions; celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday in Lake Tahoe.

Davis spent a happy childhood participating in sports and school activities, delivering Saturday Evening Posts, performing as a choirboy at Christ Church, working as a camp counselor on the Great Lakes, visiting his Great Aunt Ama’s home in Bennington, Vermont and fully enjoying life with his loving and characterful parents and younger brother Peter. He graduated from New Trier High School in 1945.

Later that Fall, in Chicago’s Union Station he boarded a train to Stanford University where he pledged Phi Delta Theta, earned spending money creatively dressing store front windows along University Avenue and studied to be accepted into medical school. Upon graduation from Stanford University in 1949, he earned a seat at Northwestern University’s Medical School where he graduated in 1953.

His internship followed at Passavant Memorial Hospital in Chicago where with good fortune he was mentored by renowned physicians, Dr. Loyal Davis for General Surgery, Dr. Stuart Abel for Gynecology and Dr. John Brewer for Obstetrics. Davis earned a fellowship and a special preceptorship with Dr. Brewer; a mentor he held in great esteem and affection. He enjoyed his fond memories of Dr. Brewer rigorously testing and tutoring his young residents on grand rounds, challenging them to doubt everything, even his advice and instilling in Davis a lifelong devotion to putting the needs of his patients first.

During the Korean War, Davis served as a Captain in the United States Air Force in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Palo Alto-Stanford University Hospital followed. Though honored to be recruited by Northwestern Medical School to become a valuable part of their academic faculty, he knew his heart was that of a private practice physician. In 1959 he opened his Obstetrics and Gynecology practice at 703 Welch Road, Palo Alto.

While practicing medicine, Davis was the director of the Stanford Hospital Gynecologic Pathology Lab and thoroughly enjoyed teaching and the opportunity to mentor medical students and residents as an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford Hospital over many decades. He was an active member of various medical societies and peer review groups. In 2011 he was deeply touched to be given a Lifetime Honorary Medical Staff appointment by Stanford Hospital and Clinics.

Davis was highly regarded by the legal community. He was a founding member and several times the Chair of the Medical Review and Advisory Committee of the Santa Clara Medical Society. He was often asked to review medical cases and testify in the courtroom.

The lawyers who hired Davis not only trusted his ability to break down and explain complex medical cases to lawyers, jurors and judges alike using his pleasant, relatable style, but also because Davis was so respected and accomplished in his medical specialty.

Always a logic based physician, Davis pushed the envelope on many fronts, for the benefit of his patients. Davis did not believe that “once a cesarean always a cesarean.” He safely delivered breech positioned babies and promoted the practice of natural birth following cesarean section. A trusted, compassionate physician, he saw each patient and each pregnancy as unique. His patients’ pain and joy became a part of him, and he was humbled and touched by the love and faith so many gave back to him in return.

In 1975, a new and important phase of his practice began with the inclusion of a nurse practitioner, Patricia Hobbs O’Malley. His practice would be among the first in the community to provide such a service. Delight and happiness came to them in 1976 when they also became husband and wife! They felt strongly about empowering a woman in her birth experience and helped to promote the use of family birth rooms at Stanford. Davis encouraged a mother to hold on to her baby as she delivered and he took great pleasure in placing the newborn baby atop the mom’s tummy. Davis and Patricia believed wholeheartedly in birth as a family experience and included their children at the births of their younger siblings, extending this vision to their patients as well.

Over the forty years of their practice Davis and Patricia enjoyed providing highly personalized care with a shared commitment to enhancing the health of women. Together they expanded the services they offered to their patients, including group childbirth classes, weekly mother-baby support groups, and later menopausal care, in office mammography, bone densitometry, women’s clinical research and integrative functional medicine.

Davis was a loving, fun, proud champion of his 6 children, 4 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. Believing in the gifts of procreation, his youngest child is 33 years old; his eldest is 65 years old. In that span of time as a father, he gleefully managed to rarely miss a sports or significant event in his children’s lives despite the ongoing necessity to be available to his patients around the clock. To them, their father had a knowledge base that was infinite and inspiring. He made curiosity, self-reliance, humor and compassion constant companions they can turn to forever.

Davis is survived by his adored wife Patricia H. Baldwin, of San Francisco; son L. Blake Baldwin of Kennebunk, Maine, daughters, Lucy K. Baldwin of Palo Alto, Laurie A. Baldwin (Mark Mickelson) of Palo Alto, Bridget O’Malley Baldwin (Matthew A. Nathanson) of San Francisco, son Christopher H. Baldwin (Heather) of San Francisco, daughter Blythe B. Baldwin of Oakland; grandchildren Bretney W. Johnson (Meggan) , Prentiss W. Johnson (Nigel Mesta), Willa A. Nathanson, Sierra Baldwin, and great grandson Xander W. Johnson; brother Peter D. Hanumant Patil April 9, 1934 – November 19, 2016 Los Altos resident Hanumant Patil passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Stanford University Hospital surrounded by his wife, son and daughter-in-law, extended family members and friends. He leaves behind several siblings in India.

After getting his masters of science degree in India, he came to the U.S. to pursue his graduate studies and received a Doctorate in Physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. After teaching stints at Cornell and MIT, he joined Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto where he spent the next 22 years, retiring in the mid-90s.

He and his family spent several years in Colorado Springs where he was assigned to improve the electron optics of cathode ray tubes at Hewlett-Packard’s division there. It was one of the highest accolades that one could get in the lab -- a transfer, with his product, to production. It was a very productive time for Hanumant. Those who worked with him remember him as an incredibly bright scientist and express enormous respect for his kindness, intelligence and competence as an engineer and physicist. Family and friends always mention his warmth and compassion towards all who knew him.

He loved his new country but cherished the memories of the small village in South India where he was born. His passion became to give back to the community where he came from and to provide opportunities to others less fortunate, particularly in education, environment, and to women. In that process, he became a revered figure in his family -- a mentor and role model to numerous young family members.

He supported several activists and non-governmental organizations both here in Silicon Valley and in India. He was a long-time member of Indians for Collective Action, a Bay Area non-profit that supports innovative strategies for social change, serving as its president in the early 90s. He felt deeply about improving the conditions of the underrepresented and the disadvantaged and over the last three decades his commitment improved the lives of others in many ways.

Listening to classical music, travel and fitness were his great pastimes. His love of hiking began while in Colorado Springs, where he once even hiked up Pikes Peak Mountain with a friend.

He led a life by example and inspired and encouraged everyone around him. He will be missed dearly and remembered with great affection by all.

A celebration of his life was held on Saturday, Dec. 3. His wife and family would like to sincerely thank all the friends who knew and loved him for their loving support throughout the last few challenging years.

armageddon came to Palo Alto on Dec. 1, the worst traffic gridlock that residents and many commuters said they could recall. By 6 p.m. no one in north Palo Alto was moving along main thoroughfares or side streets.

In Crescent Park and Downtown North, residents gave up trying to get out of their driveways, and frustrated drivers took extraordinary risks to try to get to their destinations, speeding down side streets and driving in oncoming lanes. The cause of the gridlock, California Highway Patrol said, was a truck breakdown on the Dumbarton Bridge, miles away from Palo Alto’s borders.

That traffic nightmare was an extreme version of what many residents on Middlefield Road and feeder streets to University Avenue said happens every day, affecting both safety and their quality of life.

Now, some residents are taking action.

Armed with cameras and software, they’re counting the traffic volume to impress upon city leaders the problem’s urgency.

Gridlock is already here, they said — it’s not some future problem.

City officials acknowledge that traffic is terrible. But without billions of dollars and

about 10 to 15 years, big fixes such as adding additional lanes or creating a more effective mass-transit system aren’t going to materialize any time soon, they said. Instead, they are working collaboratively with other cities on smaller fixes on a local scale.

Traffic problems are hampering public safety, affecting fire and emergency personnel, Palo Alto and Menlo Park fire department officials said.

“We are seeing an impact to our response times, sometimes as much as 60 seconds.

This is not only caused by an increase in traffic but also by construction and street configuration changes — traffic-calming devices, street closures and the like,” Palo Alto Fire Deputy Chief Catherine Capriles said.

The department works with other city departments and local agencies to identify possible obstructions as fire vehicles roll out, she said.

The department also is using a new technology called HAAS Alert, which notifies nearby cars that use the system when an emergency vehicle is approaching.

Even off-peak traffic hours can be a problem, just not as severe, she said. “We anticipate that the situation will only continue to get worse and that we need to figure out a solution to the issue in how we respond to calls,” she said. Menlo Park Fire has found Willow Road so congested during peak

times that fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman developed a plan in 2015 for routing emergency units through Palo Alto when needed.

Most of the time, routing emergency vehicles through Palo Alto has worked. But one year later, Schapelhouman is still worried.

“Backups last longer and continue to challenge our response times, as does new technology like traffic-avoidance apps, which spread the problem everywhere in terms of cut-through traffic,” he said.

“The road design on Willow needs to change — and wait until they start the work on the (Willow Road) overpass (over U.S. Highway 101),” he said.

Schapelhouman said that transportation plans must — but don’t usually — take the needs of first responders into account. He cited some of the area’s most ambitious roadway redesigns as lacking public-safety components, including the El Camino Real Grand Boulevard Initiative, California Department of Transportation Complete Streets document and San Mateo County’s Countywide Transportation Plan for 2040.

Palo Alto police said their hands are pretty much tied when gridlock occurs. Officers respond to incidents within the city’s jurisdiction, but when something happens on a bridge or freeway, it falls into another law enforcement department’s lap. It is also up to that law-enforcement agency to communicate about the problem, Palo Alto police spokesman Lt. Zach Perron said.

The city can only sit and wait for traffic to clear.

“When there is gridlock, including on streets adjacent to our city, there is simply nowhere for us to direct traffic to go, even if we had sufficient staffing to do so,” Perron said.

The Palo Alto Police Department currently doesn’t have a traffic team. The city used to have one sergeant and three officers who rode motorcycles around town and were dedicated

only to traffic enforcement and collision investigations. But like many law-enforcement agencies, the department is short staffed, Perron said. Palo Alto currently has 82 officer positions filled out of 92 that are authorized.

Consequently, the department put the traffic officers back into regular patrols last July.

“All traffic enforcement efforts by our department are now done by patrol officers,” he said. “Since July 1, every traffic complaint that we’ve received has been assigned to a patrol officer and/or group of patrol officers to address.”

ity officials said they are trying to tackle the problem in whatever ways they can. At a Dec. 9 biweekly transportation-policy meeting, top departmental staff addressed no fewer than 10 items, from signal re-timing on Middlefield Road to a neighborhood traffic-safety study and a Valley Transportation Authority connectivity study. Upcoming meetings into the first quarter of 2017 include a dizzying array of 18 items, from biking to neighborhood residential permit-parking programs and the Palo Alto Free Shuttle.

In January and February, staff will be taking all kinds of traffic and transportation-related issues to the Palo Alto City Council, City Manager James Keene said.

But “folks have got to realize that most of this (traffic congestion) is not under our sole control,” Keene added.

The cities of Mountain View and Redwood City have already built thousands of housing units, and all along the east side of the Bayshore Freeway, Google and Facebook are building the equivalent of an entire city.

Those homes are not being built close to mass transit such as Caltrain, noted Joshuah Mello, Palo Alto’s chief transportation official.

But Mello is working with supervising police officers on a traffic hot-spot list that has thus far identified Crescent Park streets, Center and Southwood drives, and Hamilton Avenue. The city can begin to better focus their resources such as police patrols on these troublesome areas, he said.

Adjusting traffic-signal timing is another shorter-term solution that Mello said would help around town.

There’s only so much Palo Alto can do on its own, though, because roads are often controlled by multiple agencies. From Palo Alto to the Dumbarton Bridge, for example, University Avenue traffic signals are under the control of three entities: Caltrans (at El Camino Real and the U.S. Highway 101 overpass), Palo Alto and the City of East Palo Alto. Synchronizing their traffic systems, including the logistics of feeder streets, could greatly improve traffic flow, but doing so is complex, Mello said.

“We as a region are going to be forced into an L.A. mindset,” Mello said, noting cities should not see themselves as autonomous when it comes to transportation but as a region that must work together.

That thinking has begun. Palo Alto is part of the Joint Venture Silicon Valley Managers Mobility Partnership, a coalition that collaborates on transportation issues and meets at least monthly. The group includes city managers from Redwood City, Mountain View and Menlo Park, Stanford University’s senior associate vice president and the nonprofit Joint Venture Silicon Valley. Keene represents Palo Alto.

The partnership currently is working on bicycle infrastructure across their communities, including expanding bike-sharing programs and creating a regional network of bicycle pathways; improving pedestrian corridors between the cities; boosting shuttles, car-sharing services and other forms of transit; improving traffic management on arterial roads; and advocating for additional Caltrain service, according to the group’s website.

Both Keene and Mello are clear that addressing gridlock by changing the city’s roadways would be costly, a long way away and would carry repercussions. If University Avenue were widened, all on-street parking would have to be eliminated, for example, Keene said. And it won’t help if people keep driving cars. When Los Angeles widened Interstate 405 to ease traffic congestion, it just filled up again, Mello said.

In March, Facebook contributed $1 million

toward a feasibility study of the Dumbarton Corridor that could include bringing back the Dumbarton Rail from across the San Francisco Bay. There is talk of adding toll lanes on Highway 101 and dedicated rapid-transit bus lanes. But all of those options “are a lifetime away,” Keene said.

Three years of efforts

by Guislin and his neighbors — and many years longer for other neighbors, he said — have finally produced dividends.

But Keene said that although the outlook looks gloomy, city officials are not throwing up their hands. “Even though we’re all confronted with this gargantuan regional systems problem, we’re not going to be paralyzed by the scale of that,” he said.

T

o help city officials understand the effects of traffic that’s spilling over from main roads into neighborhoods, more than a dozen residents in both Palo Alto and Menlo Park are doing their own traffic surveys, using software and trafficmonitoring equipment to gather their data.

Alan Akin, a Professorville resident, has been studying the intersection in front of his home, at Waverley Street and Lincoln Avenue, since 2013. Akin, who has twin 10-year-old daughters who soon will be riding their bikes on their own around the neighborhood, was concerned for their safety, he said.

He set up a camera that can record traffic over the course of 24 hours and conducted studies on Dec. 3-5, 2013; Jan. 7, 2014; Nov. 17-18, 2015, and May 25, 2016. He also recorded traffic when school was out for comparison data.

“I was surprised to find that on average 4,200 vehicles per day drove through the intersection by my house,” he said of the initial 2013 findings. That number has continued to rise. In 2015, he recorded 5,124 vehicles passing his home per day. From 2013 to 2015, Akin found a 20 percent increase in traffic on Waverley and a 30

Menlo Park residents are using monitoring equipment from New York-based Placemeter at Woodland Avenue in Menlo Park near the Chaucer Bridge. During the week of Nov. 28, the sensors showed peaks of more than 200 vehicles per hour during weekday morning commutes and peaks of more than 300 per hour during evening commutes, except for Dec. 1. On that evening, traffic peaked at about 600 vehicles per hour as more drivers sought to use that route when other streets were jammed. Monday through Friday, a total 12,802 vehicles pass that one spot.

Palo Alto resident Neilson Buchanan said residents plan to also use the same equipment to monitor east-west traffic along University and Hamilton avenues and Willow, and along Middlefield, which runs north to south.

On Dec. 7, from 4:27 p.m. to 6:13 p.m., Buchanan and Menlo Park resident Jim Wiley monitored how traffic-avoidance apps are spreading gridlock into residential areas.

“Eleven cars backed up on Everett. Most of them making illegal turns at 4:25 today onto Middlefield,” Buchanan wrote in an email record he and Wiley shared with the Weekly.

“Even Google Maps knows to avoid that block!” Wiley wrote. In planning a route from the Palo Alto University Avenue Transit Center to Facebook in Menlo Park, Google Maps recommended cutting through on Everett Street and then cutting through the Willows neighborhood to save 15 minutes of sitting in Willow Road traffic, Wiley noted.

Google switched to recommending Hawthorne Avenue in Palo Alto and Middlefield to get to Woodland. When traffic backed up 0.5 miles on Woodland, Google went back to routing cars through the Willows, causing traffic to back up 0.5 miles on Central, Chester, Durham, O’Keefe and Laurel.

Wiley offered an update at 4:52 p.m.: “The Willows is in gridlock, so Google now sends traffic down Forest to Lincoln to Hamilton to West Crescent to University,” he wrote. About 10 minutes later, the Willows and Crescent Park neighborhoods were in gridlock, he noted. And so it went on through the peak hours.

Crescent Park resident John Guislin has a digital library of accident photos along his section of Middlefield Road. It’s a frightening parade of cars on their sides, cars pushed onto sidewalks and front lawns, and cars that have gone into street signs or that have been T-boned by vehicles traveling on Middlefield after they illegally made left turns from Everett or Hawthorne avenues across four lanes of rush-hour traffic.

On July 14 Guislin and his neighbors video-recorded the intersection of Middlefield and Everett from 4:30-5:50 p.m.

“It was a low-traffic-volume day, but we counted, documented 30 turn violations in one hour. That’s a turn violation every two minutes,” the residents said in a report to the city.

Guislin and his neighbors have compiled accident data from the California Highway Patrol to compare accidents along four blocks of Middlefield starting at the intersection of University Avenue with four blocks of University beginning at the same intersection.

In 2014-2015, the Middlefield section had 40 accidents compared to 23 for University Avenue. Broadside and sideswipe collisions accounted for 76 percent of the Middlefield accidents compared to 23 percent for University Avenue. Conversely, rear-end collisions accounted for 6 percent of accidents on Middlefield but 70 percent on University.

On Oct. 6, Mello held a workshop to review seven possible road configurations to improve safety and quality of life along Middlefield.

“This workshop left us with the most hopeful and positive feelings toward city government we’ve experienced in a long time,” Guislin and residents Carolyn Godfrey, Tim Lindholm and Andrea Lichter wrote in an email to transportation department staff on Oct. 10.

But proposals remain only good ideas until they are implemented and the results are monitored, they wrote.

“We fully understand there are tradeoffs with any solution, and it is very important that we remain engaged in those decisions.”

Guislin said on Dec. 7 that he is hopeful that what residents have achieved in a partnership with the city will continue to grow.

Carols for a cause Holiday concert and CD to benefit local homeless community

homeless community when she attended a Thanksgiving dinner three years ago.

In addition to her work with the organization’s homeless shelter, Corpuz also served as launch manager for one of the services provided by Project WeHOPE called Dignity on Wheels. This program offers use of a bathroom, laundry and shower facility for homeless individuals via their wheelchair-accessible mobile hygiene trailer.

“If you’re a homeless person and you want to go to your appointment with your case manager or a medical appointment, you want to have a good sense of mind,” she explained. “Having that sense of mind is also feeling confident and clean. So having a shower can give you that little boost to go and improve your life.”

Corpuz, who enjoys getting into the holiday spirit by decorating her home with lights and garlands, has been promoting the upcoming concert by distributing posters throughout the Peninsula and said that she can’t wait to see the Barnett family perform live.

Barnett, a classically trained tenor, has performed and toured nationally with several orchestras and choruses including American Bach Soloists, Dale Warland Singers and Philharmonia Baroque.

He said that he is most inspired by musicians Frank Kelley and Mel Tormé for their “storyteller” style of musicianship. His favorite repertoire includes the “Evangelist” role from Bach’s “St. John Passion.”

s the 11th of 12 children born to the Barnett family, Jeff Barnett’s most cherished holiday tradition is singing with his siblings. His parents, who were both amateur musicians, encouraged him to get involved with music at a young age. By the time he was 12, he realized that his family had a built-in choir, with brothers and sisters representing parts within a four-part harmony.

“My mother loved it so much that she would, especially at Christmas time, send us out to sing for elderly people in nursing homes and people who were shut into their homes with the harsh winters of the Midwest. So she was kind of our first agent,” he said, laughing.

Barnett admitted that as a child he sometimes preferred playing basketball or “horsing around,” but now he embraces his family’s musical abilities.

On Sunday, Dec. 18, Barnett, who’s now a Palo Alto resident, will be taking the stage at First Congregational Church in Palo Alto with his sister, Carol Barnett Nesbitt, and nephew, Seth Barnett Pierce, to perform classic Christmas songs from their CD “A Home For The Holidays.”

The concert and CD are free. All donations will benefit Project WeHOPE, an organization that assists homeless individuals within Silicon Valley. It’s a cause that holds a very deep meaning for Barnett and his family since the

death of his brother, Greg, who was particularly fond of Christmas music, in 2014.

“He wasn’t a chronic homeless person, it was just that, you know, when (he had) significant bouts of alcoholism he would basically get evicted from apartments,” Barnett said of Greg’s struggle with addiction. “As one expert told me, ‘we need to let him find his own bottom.’ Unfortunately his bottom was that he died of alcohol poisoning. He wasn’t homeless at the time but he hadn’t managed to slay the demons that had possessed him for years,” he said. “So looking at it, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s something that played out over years ... it was painful for everyone. We just thought about ways that we could honor him and we wanted to create the CD to help the homeless.”

The Barnett family chose Project WeHOPE to partner with for the benefit.

“What really impresses me is that they treat the homeless who enter their facilities as guests,” Barnett said of the organization.

“They’re treated with tremendous humanity and respect ... they’re doing great work for the people in our community who are the least fortunate, who are the most vulnerable.”

At his upcoming show, audiences can expect to hear his vocal trio perform arrangements of definitive Christmas classics, such as “O Holy Night” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Their 12-track CD “A Home For The Holidays” will be available at the show and can also be found on CD Baby, Google Music and Spotify. Barnett family friends featured on the CD include guitarist Yuri Liberzon, recorder player Jutta Fugmann and musical arranger Paul Gerike.

Barnett said that his favorite song on the CD is “The Birthday of a King,” because it is a lesscommonly known Christmas song, typically performed with a large orchestra. The group decided to take a radical departure from the original recordings, presenting it in a lullaby style.

‘Daddy Long Legs’ is an utter delight TheatreWorks revives mellifluous musical comedy

Though it has only a two-person cast, the show manages to create a rich and vivid world.

In 1908, bright-but-unhappy orphan Jerusha Abbott (Hilary Maiberger) is given the chance of a lifetime: A mysterious benefactor/orphanage trustee (Derek Carley), impressed by her humorous and insightful school essay, has decided to pay for her college education, with the condition that she write him regular letters about her academic progress and on the understanding that he will forever remain anonymous and not write back to her. She only catches a glimpse of his shadow on the wall as he’s leaving the orphanage, his tall frame reminding her of a daddy-long-legs arachnid, so she (continued on page 21)

et’s cut to the chase: TheatreWorks’ “Daddy Long Legs� is a wonderfully charming and delightful bit of musical comedy that should be just the ticket for anyone looking for some escapism this holiday season.

Based on the classic 1912 young-adult novel by Jean Webster, “Daddy Long Legs� made its world premiere with TheatreWorks back in 2010. The show was written by the powerhouse team of Paul Gordon (music and lyrics) and John Caird (book), who are also responsible for “Emma,� another smash-hit literary adaptation, and the theater company’s holiday revival last year. TheatreWorks likes to present something special as its year-end production, a sort of heartwarming gift for its patrons, and “Daddy Long Legs� (directed by Robert Kelley) is an

decides to address him as “Daddy Long Legs” (“Daddy,” for short) in her letters.

And those dazzling, descriptive letters are faithfully written and posted, revealing further Jerusha’s skillful way with words, as well as her insights into life. “Daddy” (actually wealthy young philanthropist Jervis Pendleton), despite his commitment to anonymity, soon finds himself falling head-overheels for his lovely pen pal, and confused as to what to do about it. As luck would have it, he’s also the uncle of one of Jerusha’s classmates and so finds an excuse to visit and meet her in person. They hit it off, but he’s still reluctant to reveal his true identity. Meanwhile, Jerusha tells everything to “Daddy” in her letters, and begs him to make some kind of contact with her, which he does only indirectly: a thoughtful bouquet of flowers when she’s ill; a curt note via his “secretary.”

Maiberger has the voice and singing style of a Disney princess (in fact, she recently completed a national tour starring in “Beauty and the Beast”), which suits well the light-pop style of the music, and Carley has a debonair charm akin to the young Jimmy Stewart.

The best moments of the show are when the two are singing in beautiful harmony which, happily, occurs often throughout.

Rather than an overblown orchestra or cheesy production, the music (directed by William Liberatore) is carried by just a piano, cello and guitar, which gives it a fresh, organic sound. And the songwriting is tuneful and clever, working in plenty of material from the book. Due to the epistolary nature of the show, the lyrics have to deliver a considerable amount

of exposition, so there is potential for awkward heavy-handedness.

Instead, Gordon’s words carry the plot and characterizations along perfectly. My favorite lyrics come from the number “Like Other Girls,” in which Jerusha confides to “Daddy” her feelings of isolation and desire to fit in amongst her wealthy and well-adjusted peers. She wants, she sings, to “wear fancy shoes like other girls,” for example, and “make lemon pies.” But there’s a very satisfying twist that shows us (and Jervis) how Jerusha has much bigger dreams than these.

The rest of the chorus reveals her other wishes, to “cure disease and write a symphony and win the Nobel prize ... like other girls.”

No wonder Jervis falls for her; the budding “scientist/moralist/ Methodist/Fabian/Freudian/class valedictorian” is a terrific heroine for young girls to look up to. And yes, she’s originally dependent on a rich, male patron but she proves she’s nobody’s pushover or puppet.

The set, by Joe Ragey, is cozy and gorgeous, with dreamy wooden bookshelves teeming with colorful volumes and a window with a backdrop projection that offers twinkling stars, views of Manhattan and the New England countryside, depending on the scene. And though only the backdrop changes, in terms of large set elements, and there are only ever two actors on stage and not much choreography to speak of, Kelley maintains a sense of motion by having Maiberger make excellent use of props. She’s constantly packing and unpacking books from steamer trunks and rearranging them on and off shelves. All her costume changes, too, are conveniently stashed in the trunks, ready for seamless transitions.

The story’s conclusion is not really in doubt. We know Jerusha and Jervis are meant to be. And

yes, it’s a bit silly, how long everything drags on (and hearing Jerusha repeatedly address her potential love interest as “Daddy” can feel a bit creepy at times). But it doesn’t matter: Watching and hearing it all unfold in such an endearing, tuneful fashion allows us to suspend disbelief. Audience members audibly sighed at certain swoon-worthy moments. I heard one say she had a “silly, sappy grin” on her face for the entire first act. Exactly.

It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but for many it will be a sweet and warm winter treat. ith Hanukkah right around the corner, local Jewish chefs and home cooks are readying their recipes for latkes, the traditional dish also known as a potato pancake.

LOCAL CHEFS PUT THEIR OWN SPIN ON THE TRADITIONAL HANUKKAH DISH

Making latkes and other fried food is a tradition that commemorates “The Miracle of the Oil” — that famous one-day supply of oil that miraculously lasted for eight days after the Jews fought off the Greeks, celebrated on each night of the holiday by lighting one candle on a menorah. Though oil and potato are primary latke ingredients, many, including local chefs and residents, have put their own twist on the holiday staple. Below, read about a cross-cultural twist on the latke, a substitute for the standard potatoes and a practical “fix” to a common latke challenge.

Ejjeh-latke fusion Roni Antebi’s father-in-law lived in Syria until the age of 16. Due to the political climate and restrictions on Jewish people, he escaped — but not without taking ideas for his own spin on a latke recipe.

“Without telling anyone from his family, including his parents, he and his best

friend made their way to Israel,” recalled Antebi, programs director at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Palo Alto.

Because of his upbringing in Syria, Antebi’s father-in-law was familiar with “ejjeh,” a common egg-based dish resembling an omelet. He used this as his inspiration for latkes. The family has prepared their version of latkes inspired by his

Servings: 15-20 latkes • 1 cup chopped scallion • 1 cup finely chopped parsley • 100 grams feta cheese • 3 eggs • 2-3 tablespoons bread crumbs • 1 or 2 tablespoons self-rising flour • Pinch of salt and pepper Mix ingredients and wait 15 minutes for the flavors to come together. Scoop out pancake-sized portions and fry in hot oil on both sides. Serve hot.

Nourish Cafe’s zucchini latkes Robert Stayte, the culinary director at the Oshman Family JCC and the head chef at the JCC’s Nourish: A Newish Jewish Cafe, said he plans to prepare several types of latkes during the Hanukkah celebration this year.

“We make latkes for the traditional, the newish Jewish and for the not traditional at all,” Stayte said.

One example of a twist: using zucchini instead of potatoes — also a healthier option, he noted.

“The zucchini latke does not crisp up as much as the potato, but it does taste like a latke. It retains its latke essence because the main ingredient, zucchini, is grated like in potato latkes. Then it is seasoned and fried in oil, the same way a potato latke is,” Stayte said.

Servings: 25-35 small latkes • 7 medium zucchinis, grated (about 4-5 cups) • Salt • 4 eggs, beaten (use egg substitute for a vegan version) • 1 medium onion, grated • 1/2 cup matzo meal • 1 teaspoon fresh, chopped Italian parsley • 1 teaspoon fresh, chopped marjoram • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • Ground pepper to taste • Oil for frying In a large mixing bowl, toss grated zucchini with 3/4 teaspoon of salt and let stand for 20 minutes. Thick paper towels may be used to separate the zucchini into layers.

Using paper towels or a fine sieve, squeeze or press the liquid from zucchini until it’s dry.

Stir in the eggs, onion, matzo meal, pepper, herbs and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

In a heavy skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Use a large tablespoon to drop mixture into oil and flatten. Fry for 2 minutes per side or until golden brown, adding oil as necessary. Put finished latkes in warm oven while frying the remainder.

Serve with sour cream.

Foolproof latkes Menlo Park home cook Marc Drucker has never liked the fact that latkes often fall apart and crumble, making for a difficult eating experience if they’re not prepared and cooked perfectly.

His answer to this common dilemma: use potato purée, which he said naturally holds the latke together for a more ideal — and less messy — potato pancake. He discovered this “fix” to the traditional recipe on his own, and has stuck with it ever since.

“In general, when making latkes, you’re making a mess.

After years of practice, I have found a recipe that is foolproof,” Drucker said.

Servings: 12-14 latkes • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled • 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and cut into eighths • 1 large egg • 4 medium scallions, minced • 3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley leaves • 2 tablespoons matzo meal (optional) • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and black pepper • 1 cup vegetable oil In a food processor fitted with a coarse shredding blade, grate potatoes.

Fit the processor with the blade and take half of the potatoes and onions and put in processor.

Mix with reserved potato shreds in a sieve and press against sieve to drain out as much liquid as possible.

Beat egg, then add potato mixture and remaining ingredients (except oil) and mix.

‘Rogue One’ is a ‘Star Wars’ mission movie par excellence 0001/2 (Century 16 & 20) At last, the “Star Wars” cinematic universe has expanded, with the successful experiment “Rogue One” (subtitled in the marketing, but not on screen, as “A Star Wars Story”). The first of the so-called “Star Wars” anthology films, “Rogue One” takes place mostly in the year or so before the events of George Lucas’ initial 1977 “Star Wars” film (“Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope”), and it is a time of treachery.

“Star Wars” took direct inspiration from the World War II behind-enemy-lines “men on a mission” pictures of Lucas’ youth,

like 1955’s “The Dam Busters” and 1961’s “The Guns of Navarone.” In more ways than one, “Rogue One” brings us full circle, to where “Star Wars” began. In its murkier moral tone, “Rogue One” perhaps best resembles the next wave of WWII action-suspense pictures of the 1970s (including “Force 10 from Navarone,” with none other than Harrison “Han Solo” Ford).

And so this new “Star Wars” picture, directed by Gareth Edwards (“Monsters,” “Godzilla”), concerns a scrappy band of heroes and anti-heroes, Rebels on their own behind-enemy-lines missions

to resist the Empire. Word is that the Empire — under the leadership of Darth Vader (again voiced

by James Earl Jones), Governor Tarkin (a CGI recreation of Peter Cushing), and Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) — has begun construction on “a planet killer,” the now-infamous Death Star.

The Rebel Alliance recruits Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), daughter of Imperial science officer Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), to reach out to grizzled Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker).

The Rebels hope that Saw will provide the means to find Galen

and thereby learn of the Empire’s plans. Jyn doesn’t much care about all of that: she’d just like to see her dad again, who was ripped away from her by the Empire in the person of Krennic.

Off she goes, a sister whose multicultural band of brothers comes to include Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna); the probability-calculating, reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO (voice of Alan Tudyk); Force-worshipping blind swordsman Chirrut Œmwe (Donnie Yen, doing his best space-Zatoichi) and his assassin buddy Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen); and turncoat Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed). And at least six familiar faces from earlier “Star Wars” films play small roles or make cameo appearances, just one reason why “Rogue One” will give die-hard “Star Wars” fans multiple orgasms.

Another reason can be found in the “Story by” credit, shared

by Gary Whitta (“The Book of Eli”) and ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll. Although the

screenplay credit belongs to Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”) and Tony Gilroy (the “Bourne” films), Knoll’s placement is emblematic of the film’s true raison d’etre: to give us X-wings dogfighting with TIE fighters, stage laser-gun fights, and bust out everything from an AT-AT to a lightsaber. “Rogue One” runneth over with “Star Wars” spectacle.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, except that the story would work better if it more successfully warmed up the emotional connection to its characters. Jyn Erso feels a bit remote, in spite of her daddy issues and arc of moral awakening. Still, that last point — and the characters’ lack of our knowledge that their mission to steal the Death Star plans cannot fail — gives the film some weight.

This is a “Star Wars” film that looks to the future while taking us once again to the “long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away” past.

Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action. Two hours, 13 minutes.

SPEAKING OF FRUIT TREES ... Did you remember to give your peach and nectarine trees their first spraying to prevent Peach Leaf Curl? By the end of December, it will be time for the second spray. Check your local nursery for the materials you need for spraying, including horticultural oil. If you missed the first spray, do it now. Shake your tree(s) vigorously before spraying to remove as many leaves as possible.

Garden experts say that until we have a good overall rain, (1 1/2 or more inches) stay on your regular irrigation schedule. When the rains begin in earnest, turn off all your automatic systems. If there is no rain for two weeks, resume your regular schedule.

JAPANESE MAPLE CARE ...

Lyngso Garden Materials in San Carlos will offer a class on “The Allure of the Japanese Maple: Addressing the Selection, Care and Pruning,” on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The class will be taught by Arnie Cornez, a pruner and docent at Hakone Japanese Gardens in Saratoga. Cornez, who is a teaching assistant in Foothill College’s horticulture department, will teach proper techniques for pruning your Japanese maples in a manner that is both aesthetically pleasing and horticulturally sound.

You will learn the proper timing of Japanese maple pruning, how to properly open and “sculpt” your tree and the different approaches to pruning a “focal point” specimen versus a background tree. The objective is for you to leave the clinic with more confidence to prune your own trees. This class size is limited to 25 people. Go to lyngsogarden. com to register. T

he modern cottage-style Central Menlo Park home had a beautiful English garden with lots of rose bushes and great curb appeal, and there was no need to change anything.

“I knew nothing about gardens.

Zero,” said Mira Olson, who bought the home in 2011 with her husband Jonathan Weiner.

They just left the garden alone and retained the gardeners they had. But as time wore on, they noticed plants were dying.

Eventually they hired a landscape contractor focused on native plant design, who ripped out the entire yard, more than the couple had planned, and started over. The main thing he did was to build up mounds of soil and snuggle carefully picked boulders around them.

He also put in a stone patio next to the front lawn so the family could dine al fresco. He planted native shrubs and drought-tolerant plants.

But Olson wasn’t finished yet.

She says she began slowly, picking up random plants she liked from stores like Trader Joe’s or Home Depot. She poured over Sunset garden books until she realized that the plants she liked were hard to find in local nurseries. So she experimented.

“It’s totally trial and error. You have to not be afraid to rip something out.”

Once she realized the plants she picked and planted actually grew, especially the succulents, she was hooked. She stalked local nurseries on a regular basis, and got to know the nursery owners, to the point where she simply told them, “If you get anything new, just call me when you get something weird.”

She started on succulents when she found out they needed very

little water.

“I would get one, then two,” she said. And, she said delightedly, “You can cut a piece of a succulent and stick it in the ground,” and it will grow.

Before she knew it her entire front yard was scattered from end to end with succulents in various shapes and colors, from Dr. Seusslike palms to ones with green arms and maroon flowers.

The only thing she makes sure of is that the plants need relatively little water and lots of light. Beyond that, to this day she can’t name any plants in her yard except a few rare ones like a Fan Aloe.

Many others have nicknames like “Cousin It” or “Dr. Seuss.”

She doesn’t fertilize her plants, or add special soil. She simply finds a good spot where her new plant looks good, digs a hole, and sticks it into the ground.

Two years ago, the couple decided to nix their front lawn, and also to build a low fence in the front yard to contain their new Labradoodle puppy. The fence was built with horizontal boards, curving around the area where the lawn used to be and creating a patio space for outdoor eating. They added pebbles and ceramic pots full of succulents.

They’ve spent close to $150,000 on their front and back gardens, including patios and paths, a driveway, rocks, irrigation and fencing.

Olson said she began to realize that while most people never see the inside of your house, they always see the outside, so it’s easier to justify the expense of making sure

plants work in your garden.

“Succulents are so sculptural.

They’re so hardy. They surprise you with flowers. When I buy this stuff I have no idea what it’s going to look like.”

Her favorite nursery, Flora Grubb in South San Francisco, is a favorite destination at least a couple of times a month but Ladera Garden and Gifts in Portola Valley and Summerwinds in Palo Alto are others she frequents. GOAL ORIENTED . . . Stanford women’s soccer midfielder Andi Sullivan was named a Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy finalist, as announced Wednesday by the organization. Sullivan becomes the first Cardinal finalist for the nation’s most prestigious individual award since 2011, when Palo Alto grad Teresa Noyola and Castilleja grad Lindsay Taylor were recognized . . . Stanford junior running back Christian McCaffrey was named to the American Football Coaches Association’s AllAmerica second team. McCaffrey also earned All-America accolades from The Sporting News, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America and the Associated Press . . . Stanford sophomore swimmer Ella Eastin earned a pair of silver medals at the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Ontario over the weekend, while freshman Katie Drabot helped a pair of United States relay teams to the podium.

ORDER ON THE COURT . . . The Stanford women’s volleyball team had four players recognized when the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced its AllAmerica selections Wednesday, including outside hitter Kathryn Plummer, named the National Freshman of the Year. Redshirt senior Inky Ajanaku and Plummer were named first team selections, while redshirt junior Merete Lutz earned third team honors and freshman Audriana Fitzmorris was honorable mention. Ajanaku is a three-time first team recipient and earned honorable mention as a freshman. Lutz earned her third career honor. Plummer became the second straight Cardinal to be named the nation’s top freshman, following Hayley Hodson. Plummer is one of just two freshmen to be named to the first team.

Stanford became the third program to win a title while posting a 0.00 postseason goals against average. Andrew Epstein lowered his career postseason goals against average to 0.34, an NCAA record.

“Do we take the trophy,” he asked Cardinal coach Jeremy Gunn, who was staying behind to answer questions.

Gunn simply said: “Take it. It’s yours.”

The Stanford men’s soccer team rewrote history and it took the form of junior goalkeeper Andrew Epstein, who made two

consecutive penalty-kick saves, at the most pressure-packed moment, that gave Stanford a second consecutive national men’s soccer championship Sunday in Houston.

Those were the only saves he made during 16 rounds of penalty kicks that decided, combined, the semifinal and final.

In a dramatic conclusion to a back-and-forth scoreless draw in the NCAA College Cup final, Wake Forest had match point in the fifth round of penalty kicks at BBVA Compass Stadium, but Epstein’s fifth-round save prolonged the shootout.

Menlo-Atherton hopes to finish historical year in style t’s been a long and demanding journey.

It all started on Aug. 4, the first day of practice, making this the 19th week in pads for the Menlo-Atherton football team.

This week, as the culmination of all that commitment and hard work, the Bears ready themselves to play the most significant game in school history: a 6 p.m. game Saturday at Antelope Valley College against Paraclete of Lancaster, with the state championship on the line.

Menlo-Atherton lost its first two games of the season, but has won 12 in a row. On Friday, the Bears beat Manteca, 49-21, in a Northern California Division 3-AA regional championship game.

NorCal champs is one thing. But winning a state title on the road against a Southern California team is quite another undertaking.

Paraclete lost its first three games of the season before finding itself under first-year coach Dean Herrington and winning 11 of the next 12. The Spirits went 4-0 to win the Southern Section Division 6 title and then beat Mater Dei Catholic, 34-18, for the SoCal regional championship. KJ Latu rushed for three touchdowns against Mater Dei while Jamaal Bell carried 19 times for 128 yards. QB Tooni Ikahihifo completed 10 of 11 passes for 110 yards.

It was the 110th NCAA team title for Stanford and 133rd national team title overall, and Stanford extended an ongoing record by winning an NCAA team title for the 41st consecutive academic year. Stanford has won 46 national championships since 2000.

The Cardinal won the coin toss and chose to shoot first, with Tanner Beason, Foster Langsdorf, and Adam Mosharrafa converting Stanford’s first three shots. However, when Tomas Hilliard-Arce shot high in the fourth round, and Wake’s Jon Bakero scored, Stanford was in a hole.

With rain starting to fall, Corey Baird kept the Cardinal alive with a shot up the middle, and Wake Forest’s Hayden Partain only had to make his shot to give his side its second NCAA title. However, Epstein dove to his left to stop the low shot and Stanford suddenly was back even.

After Werner’s goal, Epstein went the opposite way, diving right and the result was another title.

“You get to this stage and you can never promise to be perfect,” Gunn said. “But the boys promised to work hard, they promised to compete and they promised to

keep fighting.”

The final had dramatic moments throughout, even before Epstein’s heroics. Within minutes late in the second half, Stanford had two dangerous chances, with Wake Forest goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet completing each play cradling the ball in his arms.

In the 71st minute, a Stanford free kick from the left found Skundrich deep inside the box.

His right-footed shot in traffic ñ there were five players in front him, including teammate Adrian Alabi ñ was deflected by the feet of a defender and then the keeper.

Somehow, the ball ended up Mundet’s arms as he hit the ground, a defender on top of him.

Much of the ball crossed the goal line, but the officials ruled the entire ball did not, as Mundet straddled the line with his hips and with his head on the net side.

A replay review, believed to be used for the first time in College Cup play, was inconclusive.

In the 78th minute, a great, lefthanded diving save by Mundet robbed Alabi of a goal. A pass from Derek Waldeck on the right found Alabi for a leaning header that was heading inside the post from six yards.

The Stanford defense posted its fifth consecutive shutout and seventh straight in postseason play, and extended its NCAA tournament shutout streak to 732 minutes, 17 seconds.

Stanford won three shootouts in four College Cup matches over the past two seasons, with Epstein in goal for all of them.

After losing players like Jordan Morris and Brandon Vincent to Major League Soccer, Stanford didn’t get its first victory this season until the fifth match. But the Cardinal grew throughout the season to earn the repeat.

“We looked at the squad we had last year and said, ‘Wow,’” said co-captain Drew Skundrich. “We had some incredible individual players and incredible talent all over the field. Over the winter, something just felt like it was missing. We had to encourage and develop every single one of our players into something special like those guys were last year.

Girls basketball Senior Natalie Zimits scored 16 points and freshman Charlotte Levison added 12 in leading the Sacred Heart Prep girls’ basketball team to a 56-27 victory over Westmoor in the championship game of The King’s Academy tournament in Sunnyvale on Saturday.

Levison, who scored 22 points in Friday’s win over San Mateo and averaged 14 points a game, was named the tournament MVP and Zimits joined her on the alltournament team.

this time Bryce Marion sent a centering pass past two defenders on a ball first-timed by Amir Bashti, whose close-range left-footer at the near post was blocked by Mundet one minute into the second overtime.

In the first half, Stanford pushed forward but Wake Forest reversed course and provided two chances.

The Demon Deacons (19-3-3) broke down the Cardinal defense with a pass that split two defenders and met Jacori Hayes on the run. As Hayes’ coiled for his shot, Beacon, to Hayes’ right, tackled with his left foot to knock the ball away inside the penalty area.

In the 43rd minute, Stanford gave the ball away deep in its end and a quick pass found Wake’s Ian Harkes at the top of the box. His quick low shot forced a sprawling save from Epstein. The play ignited a wild sequence of endto-end action over the next couple of minutes, but without any other deadly chances.

Fifth-year coach Jeremy Gunn has won three NCAA titles, including the 2005 Division II crown for Fort Lewis. And, after going 113 years without a championship, Stanford now has two and becomes the 11th to win at least two men’s NCAA titles.Q

Mims rushed for a season-high 312 yards in the win over Manteca. That came after a 257-yard outburst against Milpitas in the Central Coast Section Open Division I title game. Mims, who has received scholarship offers from Fresno State, San Jose State, Eastern Washington, Sacramento State and Weber State, has rushed for 2,293 yards on the season and scored 28 touchdowns.

Johnson has accounted for 34 touchdowns, 18 passing and 16 rushing. He has rushed for 1,065 yards and passed for 1,986 yards.

M-A will make the trip to Lancaster on Friday and return home Saturday night after the game.

“This is the biggest stage,’’ Ravipati said. “The guys will need to rise to the occasion and play their best football of the year. I tell the team, ‘you grow most as a person when you step out of your comfort zone.’ ‘’ He’s hoping the same can be said of his team once the game is over.
