RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AT STANFORD Our community’s home-away-from-home for critically ill children and their families.

How can each one of us help end homelessness in our community? Dear Community friends, My interest in homeless issues began when a good friend of mine became homeless and I couldn’t help him, and grew when Dr. Lars Osterberg and Dr. Don Barr visited Palo Alto University Rotary Club to tell us about the new healthcare clinic that they had opened at the Opportunity Center. When they surveyed the homeless in our community and asked them what they were most afraid of…it was not that they had no food and not that they did not have a place to live…but the way that people looked down on them. I realized that day that though I could not personally end homelessness, I could start becoming a part of the solution right away in a very easy way. Just by treating the people who I once ignored or looked down at with dignity…acknowledging the unhoused community members with a smile, a nod of the head or a friendly greeting. This really does make a difference! In the past four years I have become more involved in local homeless issues. I have served on the Board of Directors of Peninsula HealthCare Connection(PHC) and I am the director of the Downtown Streets Team Mentor Program. PHC is a small

250 square foot State Licensed Free Community clinic located inside the Opportunity Center which provides free Primary Care and mental health care to the homeless and those at risk of homelessness. The DST Mentor Program provides a way for community members to spend an hour a week of one on one time with a person emerging from homelessness. Being a mentor for the past two years to Evan Davis is one of the most gratifying experiences I have had in my life. Please consider joining me in becoming a part of the solution to homelessness right here in our community. To find out more about Peninsula HealthCare Connection and to make a tax deductible donation visit www.peninsulahcc.org. Good health is a key cog in the wheel to ending homelessness. For more information about joining the DST Mentor Program send an email to me at dstmentorprogram@yahoo.com Have a healthy, happy and safe holiday season, Sincerely, Carol Garsten Nature Gallery (www.nature-gallery.com)

Facing Up to The Holidays The Holiday Season, filled with celebrations and events, is often followed by the setting of New Year’s resolutions for how we take care of our bodies, face and skin. Whether it’s a treat you’ve just decided to give yourself or something you’ve been considering for a while, a few simple things can reduce the signs of aging. Dr. Jill Hessler, a double board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, states that, “The eyes are generally the first place to display signs of aging.” Fortunately, there are a wide variety of treatments available. Botox works very well to erase the crow’s feet and lines between the eyebrows. Lasers and chemical peels can smooth the skin when deeper lines are present, as well as remove signs of sun damage. When under-eye bags are present, surgery is your best option, Dr. Hessler explains.

Dr. Hessler received her training at the University of Michigan and was on the faculty at the Washington University School of Medicine before moving to the Bay Area to start her practice in Palo Alto. Among numerous honors, she was selected again by her peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America.” She also serves as director of an international course on rhinoplasty, instructing surgeons on the art of aesthetic nose surgery, and teaches at additional courses on aging face. She has extensive experience in all aspects of facial plastic surgery, including eyelid surgery, facelift, rhinoplasty and browlift. She is excited to offer her experience and expertise to private clients in the discreet setting of the newly built Palo Alto office and surgery center at Premier Plastic Surgery. Now is the time to visit Dr. Hessler for your individualized consultation to get you ready for those upcoming holiday events! Tips for Energy-Smart Holiday Gifts from CPAU The City of Palo Alto Utilities Department (CPAU) is owned by the Palo Alto community it has been serving for over 110 years. Palo Alto residents retain local budget and operational control over their electric, natural gas, water, sewer and garbage collection services. Residents and businesses alike enjoy prompt maintenance, repair and service from field crews and a customer service center focused on specific Palo Alto needs. CPAU aims to provide all of its customers— residential and business—with reliable, environmentally-sound service at the lowest possible cost. By investing in sustainable energy, we’re moving closer to a future in which Palo Alto is powered by energy from wind, sun and other non-greenhouse gas producing resources. In the short term, it also means minimizing our impact on the environment and maintaining clean air and water for future generations. This holiday season, CPAU encourages you to think about the long-term costs of the presents you purchase for family and friends. Electronics play an increasingly larger role in your

home’s energy consumption and are estimated to be 15% of household electricity use. Many electronics products use energy even when switched off! Look for the ENERGY STAR® rating on any electronics you purchase this year. Equipment that has earned this certification helps save energy when off, while maintaining important and useful features. After presents are unwrapped, remember to save energy by unplugging battery chargers or power adapters when the items are not in use----that includes your phone, tablet or e-reader chargers! Also, use a power strip for as many electronics as possible so you have an easy, central “turn off” point when done using or charging them. Learn more about CPAU and the programs, services and information resources available to the Palo Alto community. Brighten Your Holidays at Shreve Jewelers Stanford Shopping Center Shreve & Co. was established in 1852 just four years after the discovery of gold in the California hills. The oldest retail business in San Francisco and oldest jeweler in California, Shreve was the only jeweler to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire. After the deaths of the two intrepid Shreve brothers, the store was incorporated as Shreve & Co. in 1894, with George Rodman, the son of George Shreve, as president and partner Albert J. Lewis as the majority stockholder. The store now stood on Market Street, across from the Grand Palace Hotel. Stately carriages rolled by with women adorned in feathers and finery...their escorts clad in top hats and waistcoats. Fashion of the day dictated that men wear wide cravats accented by diamonds and gold stickpins. Women wore many pieces of fine jewelry — brooches, necklaces, rings... and many bejeweled bracelets on each wrist. The style setters of this era lived in opulence. A Street Bike Named Desire

It’s Holiday Time! Celebrate at Scott’s

Desire??? Because you will have a hard time selecting from the chic European City Bike collection that this new lifestyle bicycle boutique in Town & Country Village offers. Since June, 2011, it has attracted customers throughout the greater Bay area and beyond looking to get out of their cars in order to scoot around town. The colorful folding Bromptom bikes from England are especially in demand for commuters due to their ease in folding and compactness. Pashelys, also handmade in England, offer a quintessential experience to the dedicated rider. In addition, you will find Pilens, the work cycle from Sweden, and the Retrovello from Germany which offers a luxurious ride on a beautiful retro city bike. Cargo bikes include the Christiana and the Nicola, both from Denmark, where city biking is a way of life. The Xtracycle also offers extra space to outfit up to two child seats or large cargo space for groceries or other needs. Electric bikes include Ecobike and Bionx.

For over twenty years, Scott’s Seafood has been a Palo Alto tradition. Our warm atmosphere and friendly service provide an inviting counterpart to our fresh seafood menu. Scott’s is best known for serving the freshest seafood from local and distant waters as well as USDA prime dry-aged steaks. From our savory clam chowder to Dungeness crab cakes, the flavors burst forth with originality and an Old World charm. Our new menu is modern and contemporary using seasonal ingredients and organic produce. We feature a California wine list and full bar. For a romantic evening, business luncheon or a casual meal with friends before or after a Stanford game, come to Scott’s and let our experience work for you. Scott’s is open seven days a week: Mon-Fri lunch & dinner, Sat & Sun brunch & dinner. We have live music in the bar every Thursday and Friday nights. And don’t miss our daily happy hour from 4-7 p.m.

Ronald McDonald House at Stanford Ronald McDonald House at Stanford creates a home-away-from-home and supportive community for families of children with life-threatening illnesses receiving specialized treatment at local hospitals. When Ana Rosa and her seven-month-old son, Brandon, arrived in Palo Alto, it had been less than 24 hours since they had received the news the baby had a brain tumor. After a whirlwind of emergency tests and procedures, they found themselves trying to comprehend what was going on and how they would cope. For two weeks, Ana Rosa did not leave her son’s bedside. Once it was clear that Brandon was responding well to treatment, she checked in to Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. In a state of shock, she asked herself, “Now what am I going to do?” She soon learned the House would help her find the answer, especially through the other parents and children staying there. “You truly

get to know the other families,” she explained, “and you become one big family.” For Ana Rosa, everything about the House has been helpful— from the relationships she’s developed to the proximity to the hospital. She’s enjoyed scrapbooking and massages, activities that helped reduce her stress. “I didn’t realize how tight my neck and shoulders were, until the massage,” she recalled, “when the therapist touched me, the stress melted away.” When severe illness strikes, it isn’t just the patient who is affected. For families whose child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, their whole world can feel like it’s falling apart. Designed to offer seriously ill children the best chance for recovery, the House is the safety net families need. For Ana Rosa and Brandon, the House provided the stability and respite mom needed, and within six months the little one was well enough to return home. Holiday Guide 2011 33

The great outdoors inspires me to choose energy–saving holiday gifts. All our sustainable actions improve the planet, so when you shop, keep in mind that some electronics use more electricity than other appliances or devices. IT’S TRUE. Some televisions use more than 650 kilowatt hours of electricity per year— costing you about $75 annually! Some high definition televisions with a 40-inch or larger screen use more electricity than even a typical refrigerator.* *per Natural Resources Defense Council

Tips for saving money with electronics: Buy ENERGY STAR® rated equipment. Compare energy use between models. Purchase a model with a power saver mode, and set it to this mode BEFORE you wrap it. Disable “Quick Start” options that leave electronics in a constant standby mode. When electronic devices are done charging, unplug the charger.
