‘I won’t forget you’ Although Levi has been adopted, he helps donate gifts to those still in foster care JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

Because of Levi Campbell, 60 foster kids received Christmas gifts last year. For the last four years, he has made efforts to help those kids because he, too, was once a foster child.

In the custody of his biological parents, who struggled with drug addiction, the now 13-year-old eighth-grader found most of his breakfast, lunch and dinner in garbage cans. His lack of nutrition reduced his body growth; today, Levi stands nearly a foot shorter than most of his peers.

After being taken into foster care, Levi was adopted by Paul and Michelle Campbell on Nov. 16, 2012.

The Campbells’ friends showered Levi with money and gifts to celebrate their adoption. Rather than enjoy all of his new toys and coinage, Levi had another idea in mind.

“He asked if he could do anything he wanted with his money,” Michelle said, “and I told him anything within reason. He wanted to buy gifts for kids still in care

that did not get new families that year. I was very proud of him for thinking of others before himself and caring about kids who did not have what he now has — a forever family.”

Michelle Campbell took to social media to brag about her “proud mom moment” as she puts it, and she began asking for kids’ wish lists. That first year, they provided gifts for 10 kids.

Since the first year, they’ve grown to six times that.

“I remember what it feels like, not getting anything for Christmas,” Levi said. “This year, with more support, I want to be able to help 100 kids.” Michelle says there are more kids in foster care, so there is a greater need.

Since adopting Levi, Paul and Michelle have also adopted Levi’s younger brother, Noah, and siblings Annabelle and Jonah.

Together, they enjoy the family time they spend collecting and organizing all of the gifts for the foster kids.

“Even though it’s exhausting,” Michelle said, “that’s why we do it year after year. The kids deserve it.”

Ormond traditions will light up the town The theme for The Casements is “A Dazzling Holiday.”

opefully, Brian Daly won’t be pulling a reluctant camel out of the road on Saturday, Dec. 10, so that the Home for the Holidays Parade can pass by. This was one of the amusing memories he has from his 22 years in coordinating the parade along with about 15 other volunteers.

“That was no small task,” he said about moving a camel that was lacking the holiday spirit.

The parade, a 26-year Ormond Beach tradition, will begin at 6:30 p.m. It was one of the first nighttime parades in the area.

This popular kickoff for the holiday season has 101 entries

this year. Typically, there are 2,500 people in the parade, Daly said. There are floats and vehicles from businesses, churches, scout troops and school marching bands, including Seabreeze and Mainland high schools.

In recent years, the parade has drawn as many as 15,000 spectators.

“They are four to five deep along the sidewalk,” Daly said.

The floats get better every year, Daly said, and some are very intricate.

Last year’s winner of the President’s Cup was Arrow Towing, of Holly Hill. In fact, the company has won the trophy several years in a row, and Amanda Balboa, of Arrow, said they begin talking about ideas in September and start

“It’s a chance for everyone to get together,” she said. “We get the families involved and the kids have a great time.”

Years ago, the parade would alternate each year between the Mainland and the Beachside. It’s coordinated now each year with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

One small-town aspect of the parade occurs when the parade members get organized and lined up along Washington Street before it starts. Daly calls it “controlled chaos,” but the area from Division Avenue to Mound Avenue takes on a party atmosphere

CASEMENTS LIGHTS UP

New this year, the exterior decorations of The Casements have been enhanced with new permanent lights on the roof, the towers on the band shell and the gazebo in the front yard. It was an idea of the guild, and Cultural Center Coordinator Siobhan Daly said they have worked on it since April.

“Seen from the bridge, it’s a beautiful site,” said DeDee Blanchard, of the Casements Guild.

The exterior lights will be lit at 6 p.m., Dec. 2, the beginning of

the Annual Christmas Gala at The Casement. There will be events throughout the weekend.

The guild members spend three days before the opening getting the interior decorations ready.

“Everyone becomes an elf,”

Blanchard said. “We don’t know what it looks like until it’s all together.”

The theme for the interior decorations at The Casements this year is a “Dazzling Holiday,” with gold, silver, white, traces of

copper and lime green, and a lot of glitter.

The decorations are a yearround project for the Guild, which spends all year making crafts and decorations. Theme ideas come from all of the guild members.

They plan the next year’s theme in December so they can buy items in the post Christmas sales, Blanchard said.

Tying in with the glittery theme this year, the 16-foot Christmas tree in the stairwell and the fireplace will feature chandeliers.

There will also be the traditional tree room. Other sights to see include a train display, antique ornaments, and a display of themes from past years.

He estimated that growth in the area over the next 30 years will bring $50 million into County coffers.

It was obvious the community is excited about the mall, as members from the Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach chambers of commerce and government officials were in the audience for the ribbon cutting.

The ceremony was delayed because the stars of the “Property Brothers” TV show were stuck in the mass of traffic that was snaking into the mall. But the crowd

seemed to forgive their tardiness, as cries of “I love you guys,” and “Welcome to Florida,” were heard when they went onstage.

Derrick Henry, mayor of Daytona Beach, said many developers have promised things for the area and not delivered.

“They left us feeling disappointed and jilted,” he said. “But much to my pleasure, their promise has been fulfilled.”

The mall is also expected to boost tourism. Lori Campbell Baker, director of the Daytona Beach Visitors Bureau, said the mall is an “amazing addition” to a destination that draws 9.5 mil-

lion visitors every year.

Steven Tanger, president and CEO, said the company gets involved in local communities and they concentrate on children’s causes and the fight against breast cancer.

“We raise money for local schools,” he said.

Will the outlet mall bring in visitors that will spend their money around the county? Will it draw business away from other retail centers?

Time will tell.

John Harrington’s Christmas trees are so freshly cut that he and his staff at The Arboretum have even had snowball fights with the remaining fluffy snow that was left in the truck.

Though he never wants to bad mouth his big-box competitors, Harrington that said last year he had over 10 people buying Christmas trees in the first weeks of December because the ones they had purchased at the larger chains had already died.

“I’ve had leftover trees that I left out in the sun to dry up so I could burn them,” he said, “and they’ve still been green by the end of February.”

Normally, Harrington only gets about 200 to 250 trees every holiday season, but the increase in traffic he had last year motivated him to double his order.

“I think the big box stores cut them too early and refrigerate them somewhere,” he said. “Mine are cut and loaded right on the truck. Some still have snow on them.”

Bringing Christmas to Espanola

Seven-year-old Tristan is hoping for a remote control car or truck, 9-year-old Destiny wants an African-American fashion doll, while the teenagers are asking for gift cards.

These are just some of the wishes on the Angel Tree in the pro shop at the Prestwick Club.

Another tree can be found at the Plantation Bay Fitness Club. The ornaments on these trees are cards printed with the names, ages and wishes of children in Espanola, a small community off County Road 13 in Bunnell. Traditionally, residents of Plantation Bay select a card or two, then purchase and wrap the gift.

The kids’ wishes will come true, thanks to the Plantation Beach Community Outreach group and a very generous community.

“We have 18 families — 42 children — the same as last year,” this year’s organizer, Marilyn Meeske, said. “We are having fundraisers to raise between $3,000 and $3,500.”

In previous years, the outreach group has given out a Christmas party at the Espanola Community Center. This year, the kids aren’t just receiving, they also have something to give.

“This year there will be a Christmas program at the church,” Meeske said. “The kids are actually presenting us, their parents and grandparents, with

a Christmas program with songs and skits.”

Meeske said the program will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church, at 108 Knox Road in Espanola, and is open to the public.

“This year is different because the children are engaged in the program,” Meeske said. “We will be taking the gifts to the homes.

It’s a very, very, personal connection and gives us an opportunity to really engage with the families.”

The 14 volunteers don’t disappear after the gifts are unwrapped and the holidays are a memory.

“This is not a ‘once a year someone donates money, and we wrap things up, and get that once-a-year feel-good,’” Meeske said. “We do things all year long with these families. We look at them as our sister community.”

The group also sponsors the senior-to-senior program that helps a graduating senior from the community. This year, there is only one senior in the area, so the group will go to the local high schools and work with them to identify students that may be graduating under what Meeske called, “extremely difficult circumstances.”

Last year’s recipient was a homeless teen living and doing her homework in a car; she was accepted to the University of Chicago.

“She got a full ride,” Meeske said. “She was one motivated student.”

Meeske learned that while the student earned a full scholarship, it didn’t include the summer orientation.

The outreach group posted a list of the students the community had helped.

“When we got to the homeless child, money just started showing up,” Meeske said. “We bought her a computer, and magically two airline tickets were able to be purchased for the orientation.”

The magic was performed by an anonymous donor who lives in Plantation Bay, and even Meeske does not know the identity of the donor.

“Just quietly, the money arrived,” Meeske said.

The group also makes sure the students can enjoy their senior year and their prom by providing tickets, tux rentals, dresses and hair appointments.

Meeske’s favorite project during the year is the School House

Project, a year-long project, working one-on-one with the students.

“They have a little school house that they have turned into a community center, next to the church,” Meeske said. “One of the elders of the community is there, and the kids come for tutoring.

This year, our group has eight tutors. You get to know the kids and what they like.”

A new initiative planned after January 2017 is the Helping Hands project, to freshen up and do small repairs to the community center.

“Our first project is to paint the inside and outside of the building, and do minor fix-ups. They’ll accept a little bit of help; they don’t want a lot,” Meeske said.

The ladies also enjoy receiving thank-you notes back from the kids after the holidays and after they have gone off to college.
