y now, it’s no secret that celebrity designer Ty Pennington has built his new home in Flagler County’s The Hammock. Plans for Pennington’s Hammock home were announced in February 2014, when he bought the Hernandez Avenue property. Since then, he has been seen around the county hanging on the beach, eating at restaurants, partnering with Flagler Habitat for Humanity, and even throwing the first pitch at the Palm Coast Little League opening ceremonies. How did he get to throw the first pitch, you ask? Fred Lewers is the answer. Lewers is an avid volunteer with

the Palm Coast Little League. So much so that he was awarded Little League International Volunteer of the Year in 2011. He is also a real estate professional with Palm West Home Realty and Palm West Home Builders. When Pennington was looking for a builder in Florida, a mutual friend recommended Lewers and Palm West Home Builders. “It wasn’t the normal way to find a builder,” Pennington said. But it was the small town way. “I’m usually a good judge, I’ve got a good sense of character,” Pennington said. “Fred was a good guy.” The home, which was built by Lewers and Palm West Home Builders Inc., boasts six bedrooms, 5.5 baths, a pool, a boat dock with a solar lift, two elec-

tronic fireplaces, a recirculating hot water system, an array of energy saving LED lights and all the latest and greatest state-ofthe-art technology. “Building this type of home, it really is the next generation of homes,” Pennington said, adding that dealing with the newest technology on the market had its challenges. Pennington utilized a lot of local companies during the project, and also teamed with Eaton, a 2015 Energy Star Partner of the Year and producer of the first Energy Star-certified lightemitting diode (LED) downlight. More than 200 of Eaton’s Halo LED lighting solutions are utilized throughout the interior and exterior coves of the home. The LEDs and the process of making Pennington’s new home energy efficient, weather and storm resistant, healthy and smart was featured in an online

TV series with NextGen Home TV, “First to the Future Home,” viewable at nghtv.com. “First to the Future Home is an ideal showcase for Eaton’s innovative, energy-efficient residential products and solutions,” said Mark Eubanks, president of Eaton’s Lighting Division. “Viewers will learn how LED lighting and other innovative electrical solutions enhance the design and construction of new homes, and how they can result in dramatic cost savings and environmental benefits.” Eaton’s products featured in the home also include electrical vehicle charging stations, safety and disconnect switches, surge protectors and a variety of receptacles. The home also features Eaton’s Aspire RF wireless controls, a customizable, energySEE NEXTGEN HOME PAGE 2B

for the house through all the solar panels, we’re actually sending power back to the grid,” Pennington said. “So (the house) is self-sustainable, which is what the goal was.” While the house itself is unique, so is the lot that it stands on. “The property, the way I understand it, is that when they built the intracoastal in 1940, the fill was piled on the shore,” Lewers

said. “And that’s what this lot is built on.” The home that stood on the lot before Pennington purchased it was angled, so Pennington built his home angled as well. “We wanted to pay homage to what was here before — the old-school Florida design,” Pennington said. “My house is on the footprint as the previous one. It’s a really special lot.”

Ty Pennington’s seven secrets to creating an outdoor oasis

S

ummer is as much a mindset as it is a season. But even the ultimate summer state-of-mind is hampered by an uninspired outdoor living space. So in the spirit of the season, Sears Outdoor Living and celebrity designer Ty Pennington have teamed up to offer seven secrets to the art of creating the perfect outdoor oasis. In June, the company will unveil videos featuring Pennington showcasing Sears outdoor living products, along 1.

with solutions to common design challenges at his new Palm Coast home. “Nothing says ‘summer’ quite like an outdoor oasis, but if I know anything about outside entertaining, it’s that everyone’s space is unique,” Pennington said. “Regardless of size, climate or seasonal element, you can achieve the ultimate outdoor entertaining area with a lot of creativity and a little help from my friends at Sears.”

Build your base, add over time — After envisioning your dream outdoor space, you can purchase an entire patio collection at once or build it over time, depending on your entertaining need

2. Get to grilling 3. Welcome small spaces — Think your condo balcony or oceanside deck is too small for outdoor entertaining? Think again. Courtesy photos

4. Go green and add some color — Nothing dresses up a patio faster than plants and flowers. Refresh your patio with colorful rugs, pillows and cushions. Also, a strategically-placed patio umbrella can do more than just block the sun, it can define your entire outdoor space. After all, summer parties should

create a relaxed vibe. 5. Make your move, weigh your priorities — Summer is moving season. Whether you’re moving from the city to the suburbs or from a singlefamily home to a condo in the city, match your outdoor entertaining to the space you

have. If moving to a market with extreme climates, invest in durable furniture that can stand up to the environment. Consider patio furniture with a rust-resistant steel frame, UV-resistant fabric and an all-weather resin weave.

6. Dine with family and friends 7. Consider your climate — The most popular patio sets on the market are made with either aluminum or steel. Steel is heavier than alumi-

num but can rust over time. Aluminum is naturally rustproof and generally requires less maintenance. For added protection, make sure your patio set has a heavy duty powder-coated frame if you choose steel.

HOMEOWNERS COVERAGE

Homeowners insurance is one of the most important insurance policies available to property owners and should not be ignored. It will provide compensation to repair or rebuild your home due to a covered loss, and personal property damage is also included. But what does it entail?

Though a homeowners policy is often only required if there is a mortgage on the home, it is still advisable to purchase a homeowners policy even if the home is owned outright so you can protect your investment. If you are in the dark about what homeowners coverage entails, we would love to sit down with you, and change that.

Gardener gives advice for butterfly gardens Another says lawns need unique landscaping. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

How to watch butterflies: Stand still. You might not see them when you’re walking around, but if you stay still and wait, you’ll have a better chance. And to see butterflies in your yard, it’s important to have the right flowers, according to John Harrington, owner of Arboretum, 3065 State Road 40. “Butterfly gardens are the biggest thing right now,” he said, adding that he sells a lot of plants that attract the insects, including fire cracker, shrimp plants, milk weed and fire spike. Some people scatter the plants around the yard and some like to keep them together in a butterfly garden area. Many of the plants also attract hummingbirds, especially red tubular flowers. Also attractive to hummingbirds are coral honeysuckle. “I’ve seen hummingbirds fight over them,” Harrington said. But if you have any questions about these plants, Harrington welcomes your visit. “If you have plant problems, I love to answer questions,” he said. One mistake he sees people make when they want to attract butterflies is to buy the dwarf pentas, which have very little nectar to attract the colorful fliers. He recommends the fourfoot variety of the plant. He said you can put all these plants in containers, but it’s bet-

ter to get them established in the ground, because if they are in a container, you have to remember to water them. Butterflies can be found all summer, and in some locations they are seen throughout the year. An Ormond Beach resident since 1963, Harrington has been at his location for 19 years. Now 58, he has been interested in plants since he was 13. Call 673-7800. MAKE A STATEMENT WITH YOUR LANDSCAPING

When Shirley Levkulich drives around town, she notices something about the lawns. They all look the same. “They look cookie cutter,” she said. Owner of Florida’s Garden Pit, 3047 State Road 40, she said people should landscape their yard and use a variety of plants, to make their own unique statement. She offers free home consultation. “We’re in Florida and people drive up north to see flowers,” she said. “Isn’t that ridiculous?” She said people should not think of “working” in the yard. A yard should not be just a place to go, it should have a sense of beauty and relaxation. “You should love to go out into the yard,” she said. “There should be a water feature to attract birds.” In her landscaping, she believes in using a variety of lawn ornaments, saying a statue, bowl or

an old log can make a big difference. She believes in container gardening in the yard, saying it’s the easiest to do. But the main thing, is to have a lawn with its own style. “Everybody has a different personality and the lawn should match the person,” she said. There are plants for any yard, even those covered with huge oak trees. There are many plants that grow in the shade, such as ferns and elephant ears. “It’s amazing what you can do in shade,” Levkulich said. She also advised to keep planting throughout the summer, but it might require more watering. Call 310-7583.

Exploring the new age of laminates Palm Coast business owner Leslie Giscombe says laminate has improved, making it a good alternative to granite. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Leslie Giscombe, of Palm Coast, has started a business that takes advantage of improvements in laminate manufacturing, which he says, make the product an affordable alternative to granite for kitchen and bathroom décor. Countertop Designs, headquartered in Palm Coast, offers a variety of colors and patterns that can be customized to meet the customers’ needs. A series is available that is scratch proof. “I want to educate people about what laminate is all about,” Giscombe said. Years ago, laminate edges were always square. The latest technology allows Giscombe to offer a designer edge, with six different shapes. Examples include soft or traditional ogee, bull nose and quarter round. An ogee is a curve, somewhat like an “S;” bull nose is a rounded, convex trim; and quarter-round is a well-known molding shape. Giscombe said the designer edge capability has been around for a long time, but the company that holds the patent never marketed it extensively. Another technological change that has boosted the product is digital photography. The manu-

facturer photographs sheets of granite so the patterns can be reproduced. Also adding to his product viability is that the laminate now comes in 5-by-10 foot sheets, so there are fewer seams. Giscombe said he’s done a lot of work for builders, as well as individuals who want to remodel. Giscombe started his kitchen and bath business in Palm Coast in 2003. When the recession slowed business in 2008, he made good use of his time by getting a degree in marketing at the University of Florida. He is now, as of February, taking his 20 years of experience into the cabinet and countertop re-facing business, using laminates. He has partnered with the company that holds the patent to the method of bending the laminate into the corner shapes. He handles the entire project, from design to installation, and prides himself on customer service. The product is also available at Lowe’s Home Improvement stores for do-it-yourselfers. Palm Coast is at the age when remodeling starts to take place, Giscombe said. It’s typical for a house to need updating after 15 to 20 years. “We’re hitting that marker,” he said. Giscombe has been in Palm Coast since 1991.

BARBARA CULLINANE, of Turn to Stone

Barbara Cullinane, of Ormond Beach, hopes everyone turns to stone … turns to stone for their flooring needs that is. She has recently opened Turn to Stone Construction Service and Supply, a business that offers sales and installation services for stone products including travertine for inside the house as well as driveways, patios and pool decks. Cullinane recently opened the store at 1364 N. U.S. 1 in the Amaral Plaza, but has many years of experience in the flooring business. She started a laminate flooring business in 2001 in South Florida and built it up to an $18 million business by 2006. Unfortunately, the recession brought business to a standstill. “The recession started long before it was announced,” she said. She tried starting over in Brevard County, but decided to relocate to Ormond Beach, after visiting her brother in the area. “I fell in love with Ormond Beach,” she said. At her new shop, Cullinane offers a variety of travertine and marble, and points out the endurance of stone. “The pyramids are still standing,” she said. She also offers brick pavers and onyx. Travertine is cut from quarries in Turkey, Spain and Italy. It has a natural pattern, unlike man-made flooring, which has a designed pattern. An option people have with travertine is to leave the holes

unfilled, which some people like for outdoor usage. For a smooth stone, the holes are “honed and filled.” The customer can also choose a “brushed and chiseled” cut for the stones, which give them a scalloped edge. Travertine can also be placed without grout but the process is labor intensive. She said outdoor kitchens are hugely popular right now, and she can provide complete installation. For the walls of outdoor kitchens, a cultured stone veneer can be used. There are many different patterns in travertine. Currently, the “French” style is popular, which uses four different sizes of stones. Also popular is the diagonal cut, where the stones are set in a diamond pattern. Travertine can be used outdoors as well, where thicker pieces are used, for pools, outdoor kitchens, etc. It can be placed over concrete. Cullinane said sometimes people are surprised that they can’t match a Travertine they’ve seen somewhere. Even though the color will be the same, it will have its own pattern . “It’s like granite,” she said, “the pattern won’t be exactly the same.” She recommends that stone be sealed, and it can be cleaned with water and white vinegar. She enjoys helping people renovate homes. “It’s very rewarding when you transform a home,” she said. “It’s elegant and people just love it.” Call 944-9917 or look for Turn to Stone on Facebook.

BIZ BUZZ Find out about local remodeling projects Thanks to a new website, called buildzoom.com, residents can find out the remodeling history in their neighborhood. A map, which can be found at buildzoom.com/ map/ormond-beach-fl, shows where permits have been issued and the contractor that was used for the work in Ormond Beach. Data for Palm Coast is expected to be added later this year. Jiyan Wei, co-owner with David Petersen, said the information is obtained from the city building department. In the future, they plan to also offer the inspection reports. The company, which provides services for people seeking a contractor, is based in San Francisco. “Our goal is to provide homeowners with a free, public resource to help them better understand what’s happening in their neighborhoods,” Petersen said in a press release. Their mission is to bring transparency to the remodeling and construction industry, the statement said.
