A big change is coming to Flagler Schools next year: Both high schools will have new principals. According to Superintendent Jacob Oliva, the new leaders should be hired this week, and would start work on July 1.

for a year at Father Lopez Catholic High School and then for 10 years at Flagler Palm Coast.

“I had promised myself, my family and this school that I would stay until my son graduated,” said Pryor, referring to his son, Adam Pryor, who graduated a year ago and is now a music education major at Florida State University.

Chris Pryor said resigning as principal is bittersweet. “It’s a job I love,” he said. “I’ve loved every minute — well, most of the minutes,” he added with a laugh. “I love this job and these people and this school.”

He recalled a poignant moment that shaped his philosophy as a principal. A few years after the school opened, Pryor visited the new Pirate Theater to see a dance recital, and he noted that the students were mostly self-directed.

“It suddenly occurred to me that this place is alive — because of the kids,” he said. “It went from being a shell of concrete and brick to a being, an entity, that has a life of its own. … It brought tears to my eyes. … That was my moment when I realized that Matanzas was a living thing … and it’s going to be this way long after I’m gone and any of our teachers are gone.

This thing will continue to live and thrive.”

years, the district’s reading coach and an assistant principal, for a total of 28 years in education. But she won’t be going far.

Shott’s new office will be down the road in the Government Services Building, which houses Flagler Schools administration. She will be given a new role as Oliva restructures the leadership team.

“One of our pillars that we focus on is student support and community engagement,” Oliva said, “so she’s going to basically fill into that role. It’s part of the vision that we rolled out with the School Board over winter break. The departments would be student services, ESE, communications and com-

munity engagement. Those are all different departments right now, so we’re streamlining.”

According to Oliva, Shott has already shown she is a leader in community engagement, promoting the work that has been done in the flagship programs, as well as engaging with the local governments and the business community.

“She has a strong vision and is great at building relationships,” Oliva said. “She and I actually have worked together closely for the past decade, and have a very good working relationship, so, with us moving our vision forward, she was a natural selection.”

Shott said she will miss being around the kids most of all. “I always tell everyone that no matter how your day is, when you can walk out into the hallway and be surrounded by 2,400 kids, it makes your day great.”

But, she is looking forward to her new role in district administration.

“There are so many exciting things happening right now, with the flagship programs,” she said.

“We’re pioneering that across the state. … The excitement of that is a big part of it.”

David Beasher Snelgrove, sentenced to death by an 8-4 jury vote after he was convicted in 2002 of the 2000 beating and stabbing deaths of his elderly Palm Coast neighbors, Glyn and Vivian Fowler, has appealed his death sentence multiple times.

He was back in court in Flagler County Tuesday, May 26, as his defense team attempted to convince Circuit Judge David Walsh to throw out his conviction and his death sentence and grant him a new trial and penalty phase.

Snelgrove, wearing the greenand-white jumpsuit of an inmate on death row, was largely expressionless throughout the hearing.

The victims’ children, Randy Fowler and Pamela Fowler Norko, traveled from their homes in California for the hearing.

Norko, who dabbed at her eyes with a tissue throughout the proceedings, said the repeated appeals — which have included two before the Florida Supreme Court — have been hard on the siblings.

“We went through the first trial back in 2002, then there was another hearing for the penalty phase, and we’ve been though two appeals in Tallahassee, and now this,” she said.

Her brother was also frustrated with the lengthy process.

“All they’re doing is pulling at straws trying to save him, after he murdered two wonderful people,” he said.

Norko said she is hoping Walsh, who will rule in the future after reviewing the case documents which must be submitted in the coming 30 days, will find for the prosecution.

“We will fight to the end,” she said.

She noted that her parents had been friendly with Snelgrove, who lived across the street from them. They’d loaned him money in the past.

But Snelgrove, then 27, broke into their home one night to steal money or jewelry to pawn to support a cocaine addiction.

“All he had to do was ask my dad, and my dad would have done anything for him, for anybody,” Norko said.

But when the couple awoke and interrupted Snelgrove’s burglary, he killed them, beating 84-yearold Glyn Fowler so brutally that he died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to Florida Supreme Court records. Vivian Fowler, 79, died of a stab wound to the heart, and both had “multiple fractures and stab wounds spread throughout their bodies,” according to the document.

Snelgrove pawned the couple’s jewelry and used their bloodstained cash to buy cocaine.

Detectives arrested him after a bloodhound tracked a scent trail to Snelgrove’s house, where “police recovered a knife in the woods next to the Snelgrove home with blood matching Snelgrove’s DNA,” according to the Florida Supreme Court document. There were blood droplets containing Snelgrove’s DNA throughout the Fowler home.

2009, again sentencing Snelgrove to death. A subsequent hearing in 2013 also upheld the sentence.

Most states with the death penalty require a unanimous jury recommendation to implement it.

In the hearing Tuesday, Snelgrove’s defense team, led by Tampa-based attorney Richard Kiley and attorney Ali Shakoor, made two claims of ineffective counsel during the trial: that Snelgrove’s counsel failed to address a possible mental disability that could have prevented him from being sentenced to death, and that Snelgrove’s defense team failed to object to improper comments by the prosecution.

MENTAL DISABILITY?

Snelgrove’s lead counsel at the time of his trial, James Valerino, testified Tuesday that an initial IQ test administered to Snelgrove in jail showed an IQ of 77 — too high for Snelgrove to be considered what was, at the time, referred to as “mentally retarded.” The current term is “mentally disabled.”

A subsequent test found a score of 70, Valerino said. A score of 70 was, at the time, the very highest someone could have if they were to be considered mentally disabled.

Valerino said in the hearing Tuesday that he had requested a continuance from the judge at the time in order to pursue the possibility that Snelgrove was mentally retarded, but the motion was denied.

A forensic psychologist, Gregory Prichard, evaluated Snelgrove for the prosecution, judging him at the time to be at a “borderline” range of mental functioning that was not so low as to be considered mentally disabled. He’d evaluated Snelgrove’s IQ as 75.

In court Tuesday responding to questions from the prosecution, Prichard noted that Snelgrove

hadn’t been classed as intellectually disabled as a child. He’d instead been listed as emotionally disabled.

“When they’re saying it’s emotional, they’re essentially ruling out that it has anything to do with intellectual condition,” Prichard said.

And, he said, Snelgrove’s written communications from prison didn’t seem like that of someone with an intellectual disability, and people didn’t react to him as someone who was mentally disabled.

“In my mind, everything was consistently pointing that Mr. Snelgrove was functioning in a borderline intellectual range, not in a disabled range,” Prichard said.

Kiley asked Prichard if he had any way of knowing if other inmates had helped Snelgrove write the communications that Prichard had reviewed.

He did not.

Snelgrove’s current defense team also found Christine Mack — a former employee of Snelgrove’s Miami-Dade county high school — who had worked with Snelgrove when he was a child.

Valerino hadn’t done that, and Shakoor argued that he should have, and that his failure to do so constituted ineffective counsel and grounds for a retrial.

But Valerino, who came to court Tuesday with a cart loaded almost five feet high with file boxes full of case documents, said from the witness stand that he’d found no school documents listing Snelgrove as intellectually disabled.

Shakoor asked Valerino if he’d traveled to Miami or sent a special investigator there to look for a witness who could testify to Snelgrove’s intelligence.

After the continuance he’d requested was denied, Valerino replied, “We did not have time to find a witness when we were in the middle of the penalty phase.”

Shakoor argued that Valerino could have sent a special investigator to Miami to look for witnesses who’d provide mitigating information. The fact that he hadn’t, Shakoor said, and that he had not objected to statements made by prosecutor and former State Attorney John Tanner in opening and closing arguments — when Tanner told the jury that Vivian Fowler hadn’t run away the night of her murder because she’d been with her husband too long to flee, and that she must have known what was coming — constituted ineffective counsel.

“These were objectionable matters,” Shakoor said of Tanner’s statements. “The first two statements … were an example of Mr. Tanner inflaming the jury by getting in the mind of the victim.”

LAY WITNESS OVERLOOKED?

The defense team questioned Mack Tuesday through a video link to the courtroom.

She testified that she’d seen Snelgrove regularly, though not frequently, when she was an ESE program specialist at Miami Central Senior High School, which he attended.

“Mr. Snelgrove, I remember, was a tall skinny young man,” she said. “He was pleasant, he was not a disruptive student. He did have a tendency to be truant.”

Shakoor noted that many of Snelgrove’s school records — such as possible IQ tests that might establish mental disability before the age of 18, a potential mitigating factor in his case — had been destroyed by the Miami-Dade County School District by the time of his trial.

He asked Mack if it was possible for students who’d been classified as emotionally disabled for ESE classes to also have an intellectual disability.

though uncommon. When Snelgrove was in high school, she said, it wasn’t possible for students to double up on ESE programs. “On occasion there were other conditions, but the students were placed based on what was the best setting for them at that time,” she said.

But Snelgrove wasn’t able to take regular courses, and was instead on an alternate diploma course, available only to students whose reading level in high school was below the fourth-grade level.

“He could not be mainstreamed into the regular academic classes,” she said.

In response to Shakoor’s questions, Mack said that she would have been willing to testify at previous hearings.

“As a lay witness, Ms. Mack’s testimony could have been very beneficial for Mr. Snelgrove,” Shakoor said. “Mr. Snelgrove’s lay witnesses were mostly family members or close friends. ...

But as a juror, they’re going to see somebody testifying for a family member, they’re not going to take it … with possibly the same level of scrutiny as they would with somebody who was a nonrelative, who’s an education professional. … Trial counsel had no reason for not finding Ms. Mack.”

Kiley said Mack’s testimony satisfied the need for evidence that Snelgrove had an intellectual disability before the age of 18, despite the destruction of some of his school records before the trial.

“The only records that could save this man’s life have been destroyed,” Kiley said. “This man was never going to graduate from high school like a normal person; he was reading at a fourth-grade level when he was in the 9th grade. … Evidence of onset under the age of 18 has now been satisfied.”

Attorney Scott Browne, arguing the case for the State Attorney General’s Office, said that wasn’t the case.

“Did you see the number of boxes in here, your honor?” he said to Walsh. “Did that seem like an attorney who took his job lightly in this case? These defense attorneys left no stone unturned. … Was (Mack’s) testimony inconsistent with anything understood at the time? The answer is no.”

And the comments by Tanner during the trial also weren’t grounds for scrapping it and starting over, he said.

“Mr. Snelgrove received a death sentence not because of any brief comment by Mr. Tanner — he did it because he committed two heinous and atrocious, cruel murders,” he said. “Nothing that has occurred in this courtroom should undermine the confidence in the death sentence that Mr. Snelgrove received for committing two murders in this case.”

Snelgrove’s former attorney, James Valerino, brought a cart loaded with old documents on the case.

Q: Can you be specific about why a change like this could be worth considering?

It’s because the city manager has a different idea of how he wants to do it, and we’re doing it because it’s how he has chosen.

Whatever he does in that direction simply falls under that. That is too much. He has become the visionary for where the city is going to go. I don’t mean Jim, I mean him or her at the given time, and I think that’s what people are opposed to.

Q: What’s the next step? Is the charter review idea dead?

A: My next proposal: Do a charter review and allow the council to have the final say on each item. So in other words, if someone were willing to come up with something excessively radical, the council can decide not to put it on the ballot. …

I think we’re on the cusp of growing again, not like we did in the mid-2000s, but we’re going to start growing again, and I want to get ahead of this. I want the council, the charter, the city to be more in line with what’s coming than with what’s been.

When we switch from a median age from 66 to 43, from 1999 to 2012, that’s a dramatic change.

So the city, there might be things that we need to change, but we need to add. The big thing is that raising the salary of the council members so that younger people can participate. This council of retirees is just not representative of the community.

In our charter, and I’m going to paraphrase, it says, “Keep your nose out of the business, councilmen. If you want to know anything, come to the manager and talk to me.” It prevents us from working directly with any directors or managers or supervisors, and anything we do has to go through the city manager.

We have a very weak council.

And that’s what most people don’t like. They’re sitting back and saying, “We didn’t elect the manager.” And it’s not (current City Manager Jim) Landon. This is not about Jim. This is about that manager role. Jim does a great job at what we pile on him, but that doesn’t mean everybody agrees with how he’s approaching it.

Richter and Flagler’s voting crisis We are who we vote for. And we almost elected someone who is not making the county proud.

On the morning of May 20, as the May 21 edition of the Palm Coast Observer was being finalized and prepared for press, an email showed up in the inbox of our publisher, John Walsh. It was from Mark Richter, and it was so disgusting that it needs to be revealed to the community as a cautionary tale.

First of all, the email is unintelligible. In it, Richter claims that he is forwarding an email that was sent to him that morning. The forwarded email is a call to action: “Boycott FlaglerLive.com!” There is no explanation for the purpose of a boycott. Richter hints that “this is what happens when media crosses that line!” He does not explain what line was

crossed. Based on the interview Richter did with Tony Holt, of the Daytona Beach News-Journal (reprinted here at FlaglerLive.com), Richter may have been referring to a photo of two people in Muslim attire posted on FlaglerLive.com.

To prove the point (whatever the point may have been), Richter includes an illustration of Osama bin Laden’s head on the body of a naked man who is having sex with a camel.

The email is offensive, disturbing and just plain mean-spirited. And this is not the first offense. If you recall, Richter wrote to the county

attorney an email about Tristam last September, in which he makes a big deal about Tristam having changed his name from Pierre Fouad Haddad, as if his name made him a security threat.

Now, why is this a cautionary tale? Because Richter, a bully at heart, ran for a seat on the County Commission nine months ago and had such support from the Republicans that he lost to the incumbent in the primary by just 237 votes.

Think about that.

This man, who has such poor judgment that he would send to the Palm Coast Observer, FlaglerLive.com and the NewsJournal an image of Osama bin Laden having sex with a camel, could have been elected by a

popular vote in Flagler County.

What does this say about us as a voting public? Is this the kind of community we want to live in? Where someone like Mark Richter actually has a chance of representing a whole district? Where someone like Mark Richter is entrusted to make decisions about how to spend our tax dollars?

Are we that desperate for a change?

The next primary is a long way off: Aug. 30, 2016. But let this be a wake-up call to all prospective candidates and voters in Flagler County: Let’s not get complacent. If we want to have a government we can be proud of, we need to support candidates we can be proud of, and then we need to vote.

MARK RICHTER’S RESIGNATION Mark Richter is a member of the Ronald Reagan Republican Assembly of Flagler County, but the group’s president, Mike McElroy, confirmed that while he didn’t wish to pile even more criticism on Richter, the club doesn’t condone Richter’s actions. He sent an email to club members on May 21, and a portion is presented below: “As the result of a very unfortunate incident, Mark Richter has resigned from the RRR. ... There is a lesson to learn from this sad affair. In our digital age, we must be very careful about sending or forwarding offensive emails that run counter to our values. Sometimes it is very easy to click a button and satisfy some immediate passion or grudge. We need to reflect before we do so. We not only discredit ourselves, but we harm the organization and values we are here to promote.”

Flagler County’s EMS is among nation’s best Dear Editor: As a resident of Palm Coast, I read with interest Jonathan Simmons’ coverage of the city’s April 28 Strategic Action Plan workshop. However, as an EMT and member of the Flagler County EMS Advisory Board, I was disturbed to read the quoted comments of Palm Coast officials regarding EMS system and structure.

To state that the city and county EMS do not operate together well is incorrect. I would like to set the record straight.

The citizens of Flagler County and its cities have one of the best and most efficient EMS systems in our nation.

Emergency Medical Services in Flagler County and its cities operate under the unified medical control of Dr. Kristin McCabe-Kline. This single point of control allows first responders, EMTs and paramedics to operate seamlessly at all emergency scenes, whether small single-patient events or major incidents and disasters. We have been successfully operating under this unified medical control system

for several years and have consistently improved EMS operations through cooperative quality control and review involving all agencies.

Regarding Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts’ comment that the city had sought a “certificate of need” to operate its own ambulance service and had not been able to get one, I believe he was misinformed.

By statute, anyone desiring to provide EMS services with Flagler County needs a Cer-

tificate of Public Convenience and Necessity. The city has requested and was approved for a COPCN to provide NonTransport EMS Advanced Life Support on its fire engines and medic trucks.

By county ordinance, all requests for COPCNs have to be reviewed by the Flagler County EMS Advisory Board, which recommends action to the Board of County Commissioners.

During the decade that I have served on the board, we have received no request to provide EMS ambulance transport service from the city of Palm Coast.

Our state-of-the-art EMS system is in no need of fixing and gets better every day.

Paid parking solution: Employ people Dear Editor: A recent story about paid parking options in Flagler Beach included this: “Option 4 would require borrowing $867,000 ... and paying $74,700 for ... maintenance of the kiosks.”

Radical thought: Employ a few people to interact with people instead of employing “human resources” (formerly know as “people”) to service extremely expensive, unsightly machines.

Imagine employing two outgoing, personable Flagler Beach residents at $25,000/ year each, plus allocating $10,000/year each for the costs of payroll overhead (matching FICA, medical insurance, etc.)

to implement a parking maintenance fee decal program.

This $70,000 addition to the Flagler Beach payroll would be spread over 12 months. After helping to set up the parking decal and day-permit program, the employees could be utilized for clerical or other work when monitoring parking is not necessary.

Imagine beach businesses promoting “Parking decals and day-permits available here,” and “Help support our beach parking maintenance.” A 20% discount on decal face value to merchants for record keeping would be reasonable.

A brochure about the Flagler Beach parking maintenance fee decal program including various fees would explain that “this has been initiated to more equitably spread the costs of

maintaining beach parking to the people who use the limited spaces available, as well as enable an additional parking lot in the near future.”

“Our community wants to remain people-friendly and avoid a mechanized-city approach to the costs of street parking and lot maintenance while relieving the burden on our residents. We have hired two resident parking monitors to support this new parking fee program, as well as be visitor guides to provide information about local businesses, recreational facilities nearby, shopping and other information to enhance your visit to our beach.”

The parking decal program could be voluntary until October 2016, affording a reasonable time to hire the parking

monitor/guides, design and find a Flagler County source for decals, set up recordkeeping details to get the process operational, as well as handle unforeseen difficulties.

One-day $5 permits would only need space for a clearly legible indelible marker date — perhaps a blue surfboard outline on paper. Depending on cost, a blue cardstock surfboard shape for the $5 permit might be a novelty that people would enjoy displaying. Maybe local businesses would like to subsidize the printing on cardstock with an ad for their business. Perhaps this would also be a good opportunity for area students to design a parking decal in a 30-day contest.

County’s deal smells like a $500,000 bribe Dear Editor: I find it rather amazing that apparently I’m the only person in Flagler County who thinks that it’s not exactly kosher to accept a $500,000 bribe to change one vote so a company can get permission to build a resort hotel on land they own!

If this is standard operating procedure, it’s no wonder that no one wants to come to Flagler County. They try to justify this money grab by using the ill-gotten loot to buy more swampland to pacify the enviro wackos.

In Volusia County, you get tax breaks; in Flagler, you get extorted! Brilliant!

Entertainment needed to attract businesses Dear Editor: I’m writing this in response to the article on Palm Coast’s strategic plan. While incentives hold weight in the decision of where to locate or relocate a business, those things are only a small per-

centage of the overall picture.

The 40-hour work week is roughly 24% of the total hours in a week. The other 76% of hours remaining in the week do hold substantial weight in where a business is located. These business owners and employees will live here, too. That is where Palm Coast falls woefully short.

There is a reason that cities like Jacksonville and Orlando have the high-paying jobs.

Those are fully featured and well balanced communities. There is a wealth of stuff to see and do.

When you compare Palm Coast to those cities, that is where the inadequacies of our city stand out People like good food, entertainment, sporting events, live music, bars/pubs, etc. We really have none of that here. The Chick-fil-A that just opened represents the biggest problem with the city’s strategic plan.

There is no vision.

Monetary incentives alone will not lure businesses here. You need to provide the infrastructure that really inspires people to want to work and live here.

Rather than a Chick-fil-A, the city had every opportunity to try to get a more upscale restaurant or even a brew pub to fill that prime location. What a wasted opportunity that was. If you want to be a destination city for professionals, you simply cannot continue to be structured as a bedroom/retirement community.

If the city truly wants to change the socioeconomic climate here, then we need to do more than talk incentives.

The city needs to reinvent itself. I am a 38-year-old, self-

employed tech professional. I am the demographic the city seeks. I can’t tell you how much I wish we had simple things like a World Market here, a Trader Joes, a Whole Foods, a decent brewpub, an upscale steak place, a decent bar with decent live music, an amphitheater with even better live music acts, etc., etc., etc.

Having lived in the Northeast, in an area with a lot of highpaying jobs, I can tell you that those things I mentioned were in abundance. Build it and they will come. However, if the city thinks that a few fast food restaurants and a movie theater is enough to entice businesses here, well, we need new city leaders.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT DOES A GOOD DEED 8:46 a.m. — 5500 block of State Road 100 Larceny: A deputy went to a local high school to speak with a teacher who reported a theft.

The teacher, a 57-year-old man, told the deputy that he’d placed an $850 mortgage check in the mailbox the day before.

A student who lived on the same street, he said, came into class and told him she saw someone in a black Trans-Am remove something from the box the morning of May 20. The teacher left the school that morning and went home to check the mailbox, and the girl was right: The envelope was gone.

The teacher’s mail is usually picked up in the afternoon.

The teacher contacted his bank to stop the check, and a deputy issued him a case card.

10:39 a.m. — 2100 block of Old Dixie Highway (Country Hearth Inn) Criminal mischief: A resident of a travel park near an old condemned inn told deputies that multiple rooms at the inn had been vandalized.

A deputy checked the property, and found that the travel park resident, who’d been checking the property regularly and were concerned about an unsecured electrical room, were right.

Someone had broken into the old inn, according to the deputy’s report, and “ it appeared the suspects threw old televisions through the glass windows.”

Rooms 128, 130, 132, 230 and 232 were all damaged.

The deputy couldn’t reach the old building’s owner, and placed a notice of levy and seizure on the front door to the lobby.

The deputy issued the travel park resident a case card and told him the Sheriff’s Office will place an extra watch on the old inn property.

Hundreds of Flagler County residents lined the walkway in front of the Government Services Building in Bunnell Monday as the county paid tribute to its fallen service members.

Junior ROTC members from Matanzas High School and members of the local Knights of Columbus chapter held flags, members of Golden Sands, a local Girl Scout chapter, placed a wreath at the Veterans Monument in front of the building, and Circuit Court Judge Raul Zambrano played taps on the trumpet.

Col. Jack Howell, a retired Marine officer who is president and CEO of Teens-In-Flight — which gives free flight training to teens who have lost a parent or sibling, or had a parents or sibling disabled, in combat — delivered the event’s keynote speech, a call for compassion for the families of fallen service members.

“These surviving families are out of sight and mind and out of our conscious,” he said. “The reality is that once the last shovel of dirt is placed on the grave of the fallen warrior, except for the loved ones and close friends, the warrior is nothing more than a faded memory left to the archives of military history. …And for the first time, the surviving family feels the abandonment by the military, their former Rock of Gibraltar.”

As a Marine, he said, had to make several casualty calls, telling families that a loved one had died in service.

He recalled one case, when he’d had to deliver the news to a Chicago family.

“And as soon as I did, and the door opened, it was horrible,” he said. “Because at that point in time, I was providing this family with the most horrific news imaginable on earth. I then became their go-to guy. I became the guy that was going to lead them through the next few days of a living hell. …I remember also that after the funeral services were completed, my job was done. I probably snapped a salute when I presented the flag of our nation to the next of kin the surviving parent, and walked away briskly, as if I had never been there.”

dren and sibling of soldiers killed in service, who have to suffer alone, “will be able to touch the face of God, their brother, their sister.” Just two weeks ago, he said, he took a teenage girl, Emily McClimans, whose father died in Afghanistan, on her first flight.

Before she flew, she wrote a letter that is posted on the Teens-In-

Flight Facebook page.

“Although I physically cannot get to Heaven, I can get a little closer to it,” she wrote.

Howell reminded the audience that although society is aware of the plight of wounded warriors, they still have “serious issues with treatment and care.”

But, he said, “they have a voice.

“Nothing pays tribute to the American spirit better than Memorial Day,” Meeker said.

“The secret of happiness in freedom, and the secret of freedom ins courage.”

He read off the names of Americans killed in service.

“Someone knew these brave men and women, boys and girls in many cases, and loved them very much,” he said. “They gave their lives with honor and dignity.”

“The mentoring program, to me, was life-changing,” McCall said. “It changes our lives from a younger age to high school years.

When I allowed my GPA to fall close to a 2.0 this year, my mentor helped me bring it up to a 2.8.

It’s definitely been a great experience.”

McCall also emceed the event, accompanied with his grandmother, who won the Parent/ Guardian of the Year Award for her dedication to the program.

Guest speaker Glenn didn’t hold any punches toward the parents. While he thanked them, as well as the mentors for the kids, he also exhorted parents to do better with education at home.

“The major difference between distinction and extinction is education,” Glenn said.

After the Matanzas High School Steel Drum Band entertained the party during dinner, John Winston handed out awards to mentors and mentees, also acknowledging esteemed guests in attendance.

“This was, by far, the most outstanding of all the award ceremonies to this day,” Winston said. “I see more awareness in the children. They’re starting to realize that all we’ve been telling them is starting to come to fruition. I had to bury a 25-year-old last week.

Seniors from both Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast high schools, who are headed to college with the help of their mentors and parents, stood together at the ceremony.

Andy Isaac, who was awarded two scholarships, never thought he would be in a position to go to college, but after seven years in the program, he led all the mentees with the highest GPA. “The reason why my family moved to Palm Coast is because my brother and I were knuckleheads, getting into everything,” Isaac said. “I was skipping church, and I ran into Mr. (John) Winston, and then Mr. Richard Frazier took over. It’s my fault they have some gray hairs, but they molded me into a man. They stressed education to me every Wednesday at lunch, and I finally brought my GPA up to a 3.5.”

While there are great things to celebrate about the program, an ongoing issue is the lack of middle-age mentors for the kids.

Winston believes those with jobs and kids are hesitant to give up more time to other kids, so they are compelled to recruit retirees.

“If they would at least try it and put that first foot forward in a child’s life, the rewards are so great, they will never look back,” he said. “The average age of our men is 60-83. We’ve been blessed by men that have stepped forward, but we need younger men that can speak to today’s youth.

But, no matter what, we’re going to keep going.”

FDLE: Weeks secretly taped private citizens, too Former elections supervisor not only taped officials, but also funeral director, others.

ORDINARY PEOPLE Weeks recorded a conversation with the funeral home director making arrangements for the funeral of Weeks’ father, and also recorded a front yard conversation with a Flagler County woman whose ex-husband was seeing Weeks’ daughter.

The individuals former Flagler County elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks secretly recorded on her iPhone weren’t just county and state officials, but included a funeral director and a woman whose ex-husband was seeing Weeks’ daughter, according to documents released by the State Attorney’s Office.

One recorded phone conversation between Weeks and Secretary of State Ken Detzner and other officials even included audio of Weeks asking to record the conversation, and Deztner saying no.

She recorded it anyway.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation into Weeks’ recordings began Sept.

23, 2014, when the State Attorney’s Office sent the FDLE an email containing former Daytona Beach News-Journal reporter Julie Murphy’s questions about Weeks’ surreptitious recording of a whispered Aug. 25, 2014, conversation between County Attorney Al Hadeed and County Commissioner Charlie Ericksen. The State Attorney’s Office then sent another email containing a link to a Palm Coast Observer story headlined “Weeks taped officials without permission,” according to documents released by the State Attorney’s Office May 21.

Weeks herself had made the Aug. 25 recording public, saying

it indicated illegal conduct on Hadeed and Ericksen’s part — the Florida Elections Commission found otherwise — and playing it at a Canvassing Board meeting, then sending it to Dennis McDonald and to the press.

FDLE Inspectors Phil Lindley and Luis Negrete first interviewed Weeks at her offices Sept. 27. She “insisted that she make her own recording of the FDLE interview,” according to the FDLE report of the encounter. But when Lindley asked her for the recording and basic public documents pertaining to the Aug. 25 Canvassing Board meeting, “Weeks declined to provide the items to Inspector Lindley acting in his capacity as an Inspector with FDLE,” according to the report.

Lindley rephrased his request as an official public records request, and Weeks handed over the meeting minutes, sign-in sheet and newspaper notice, but again refused to hand over the audio recording or the portions she’d sent to the press, all of which is public record under Florida law, and said she wanted to consult an attorney.

Investigators next spoke to Hadeed, who explained the circumstances surrounding the surreptitious Aug. 25 recording: The Canvassing Board had met in one room of the Supervisor of Elections Office building, then convened to another one to count absentee ballots. Hadeed stayed behind in the first room, and Ericksen walked in. The two had a conversation that was apparently recorded on Weeks’ iPhone.

“Hadeed stated he was giving legal advice to Ericksen as a Flagler County commissioner and as one of his clients, and that their conversation was in the nature of an attorney-client, and it was private,” an investigator wrote in the FDLE report. “Hadeed stated he had an expectation of privacy because he was in a different room than the one in which the Board was conducting business, he was not part of the ballot counting, he was not on notice that recording was taking place, he was providing legal advice, and he did not consent for it to be recorded.”

Not only had Weeks’ recording of Hadeed and Ericksen’s conversation been surreptitious, Ericksen told investigators, but her recording of the meetings themselves had contradicted her explicit statement to the rest of the board that she wouldn’t be taping board meetings.

The board only learned that she was, Ericksen said, when Weeks at a Sept. 2 meeting presented oddly detailed minutes of previous board meetings, and Ericksen had remarked on how complete they were. “It was after Ericksen’s comment, Weeks told the Board that she had been recording Board meetings,” according to the FDLE reports.

Weeks had wrangled with other officials over meeting minutes, rejecting those prepared by other officials, who expressed concern about her minutes’ accuracy, and in late October bringing in a court reporter to transcribe meetings.

One elections office employee, Linda Constantine, told inves-

tigators that she’d developed a template for meeting minutes in 2011, at Weeks’ request. But when, also in 2011, Constantine tried to produce meeting minutes, “Weeks was not satisfied with Constantine’s work,” according to the FDLE reports, and “undertook the task to transcribe the minutes by herself.”

Oct. 3, FDLE agents searched Weeks’ office, “imaging” the data on the office’s servers, computers and Weeks’ laptop and cell phone using a forensic imager, and seizing a Dell computer tower and a HP laptop. They also found something else: a blue steel Smith and Wesson .380 Body Guard firearm concealed in Weeks’ purse, sitting on the office floor. Investigators held the gun during the search and returned it to Weeks once it was over.

When they analyzed the data from the computers, the investigators found that Weeks still hadn’t turned over the full audio recording of the Aug. 25 meeting or the clip she’s sent out to the press. She finally gave Lindley the audio of the Aug. 25 meeting Oct. 8, when he returned two computers that had been held for imaging.

More data came in, in late December, when FDLE forensics sent Lindley information pulled from Weeks’ phone. There was a lengthy April 3 conversation between Weeks, Detzner, and atttorneys John Andrew Atkinson, Gary Holland, and Ronald Labasky, in which Weeks asked Detzner for permission to record SEE WEEKS’ PAGE 14B

Wastewater staff earns safety award The following is an adapted news release from the city of Palm Coast: The management and operational staff of the city of Palm Coast’s Wastewater Plant has been recognized for outstanding effort that resulted in zero lost-time accidents during 2014. The staff’s efforts earned the second-placed 2015 Florida Water Environment Association Safety Award for Class B facilities.

Navigation signs added to waterway The following is an adapted news release from the city of Palm Coast: Kayakers and canoeists exploring Palm Coast’s Long Creek now have 15 wayfinding signs to help them more safely navigate the creek.

The locations of each of the signs were selected for specific

navigation and safety reasons and the signs’ 3-by-2.5-foot dimensions are dictated by the Florida Wildlife Commission as part of the Florida Uniform Waterway Marker System.

The $20,000 sign project was funded half by the city of Palm Coast and half through a grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District. Each sign is numbered and also features QR codes that people can scan using their cell phones to receive tidal data, maps and information about the nature preserve.

Long Creek Nature Preserve is located at 1050 Palm Harbor Parkway, across College Waterway from the Palm Coast Yacht Club.

County holds CR 302 meeting The following is an adapted news release from Flagler County: Flagler County engineering staff and a representative of Halifax Paving will attend Commissioner Nate McLaughlin’s public town hall meeting on Thursday, May 28, in Daytona North. The meeting will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Hidden Trails Park, 6108 Mahogany Blvd.

County Road 302 will be closed between State Road 100 and County Road 302 from June 8 through Aug. 17. A detour will take motorists further west on State Road 100 to its direct connection to County Road 305. The $2 million project is being 100% funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Flagler County School Board member Andy Dance and Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeffrey Hoffman will also attend.

the call. “Detzner objected to Weeks recording the call, and told Weeks she could not record the call,” according to the FDLE report. She continued recording.

Yet another recording indicated that Weeks had disseminated the recording of the Detzner call, and “Weeks’ voice was recorded saying she did not know if making the recording was legal,” according to the reports.

There was also a recording of a conversation between County Judge Melissa Moore Stens and FlaglerLive Editor Pierre Tristam, and another of a conversation between Weeks and Holly Hill Police Department Sgt. Michael Coomans.

Then there were other recordings, of conversations that didn’t include public officials.

According to the FDLE reports, Weeks recorded a conversation with Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home Director Steve Overturf about arrangements for the funeral of Weeks’ father, William Wallace Weeks.

Overturf told FDLE agents that he recalled the conversation and hadn’t known he was being recorded, but that he didn’t want to participate in the investigation because he didn’t want to lose business with the Weeks family or cause problems for his brother, who is supervisor of elections in Putnam County.

Another recording, taken in Weeks’ front yard, recorded a conversation between Weeks and Shannon Brown, a Flagler

County woman whose former husband was involved with Weeks’ daughter.

When FDLE agents interviewed Brown, she said “that Weeks was concerned that Weeks’ daughter was involved with Brown’s ex- husband and that Weeks was gathering information about the ex-husband,” according to the FDLE reports.

Brown also “expressed the opinion that segments of the recording were deleted,” and “opined that Weeks had deleted portions that contained certain portions of Weeks’ statements” — a statement that mirrors one county officials made about Weeks’ recording of Hadeed’s conversation with Ericksen: “The secretly recorded audio tape by Weeks had significant portions of discussions erased, including parts that were embarrassing to her,” according to a February 2015 county news release.

Kaiti Lenhart, an elections office employee at the time of the taping scandal and now the governor-appointed elections supervisor, told investigators that Weeks recorded Canvassing Board meetings on her phone, then downloaded the recordings and transferred them to discs on the office computer.

“Lenhart knew of no editing programs on the SOE computer system, and opined that Weeks would have done the editing on the cell phone,” according to the reports. There were also no added editing programs on Weeks’ computer, according to the reports.

Matanzas High School recognized its top athletes and scholar-athletes of the year.

Matanzas High School held its annual Athlete and Scholar Athlete of the Year awards Thursday, May 21. Individuals from every sport were recognized by the coaches, and then all coaches voted for Female and Male Athlete and Scholar Athlete of the Year awards, handed out by Athletics Director and Assistant Principal Robert Nocella.

“When it gets down to the end of the year ... it is great to do these award ceremonies because these kids work hard all year, and they deserve it,” Nocella said.

Four athletes won Scholar Athlete of the Year for two separate sports: Brooklyn Jamieson for girls basketball and volleyball; Savannah Drummonds for softball and girls track; Brianna Evans for girls weightlifting and cross country; and Jonathon Guilbe for boys cross country and track.

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

The Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards were given to Bailey Pickering for the girls and William Conville for the boys.

“Honestly, I didn’t think I was going to win. I was very surprised; it could’ve easily been anybody else,” Conville, who also was statistically ranked No. 12 among the fastest high school runners in Florida, said. “I really thought Jonathon Guilbe was deserving.”

SCHOLAR ATHLETES

Nocella then gave the Female and Male Scholar Athlete of the Year awards to girls weightlifter and cross country runner Brianna Evans and boys track, cross country runner and Conville’s longtime friend, Jonathon Guilbe.

“I was incredibly flabbergasted,” Evans said. “I’ve worked so hard to get here, and this award and the awards I have won show the goals I have reached. I still have more goals, but this is all for something, so it’s a great feeling.

After the ceremony, Guilbe spoke about Conville, instead of his own accomplishments.

“It was very unexpected, and I am excited about all this,” Guilbe said. “I really have to thank William for everything, because he was the one who inspired me to even start running, and he really has inspired me to keep running.”

Nocella also had a story to tell about Conville.

“There was actually a race where William actually ran backwards,” Nocella said. “He saw Guilbe far behind him when he was running, and he literally started running backwards just so Guilbe could catch up. That’s just the type of person he is.”

“I have worked really hard to get where I am,” Conville said. “I am greatly inspired by my parents.

They have been there through everything in my life along the way.”

“I am very proud of him,” Conville’s father said. “If there is any one kid that would talk about anybody else but himself, it’s him.

I am very lucky to be his father.”

Conville and Guilbe are both going to University of Florida on a full ride, but not for running.

According to Nocella, Conville and Guilbe are far more interested in what is to come academically for them both. Conville and Guilbe are ranked first and third among all senior graduates with a 5.1 and 4.9 grade point average, respectively.

ABC 8A Coach of the Year Javier Bevacqua is hosting his seventh-annual Flagler Palm Coast High School Co-ed Basketball Camp from June 8 to June 12, at FPC. The camp is for kids between the second-sixth grades, and will be run by Bevacqua, his coaching staff and past and present basketball players.

Cost for the camp is $65, which includes a camp T-shirt along with daily prizes.

Camp will include daily instructional clinics on the fundamentals of basketball, individual evaluations, team competition, games and awards and certificates of completions.

FLAGLER WRESTLING WINS

The AAU Flagler Attack Wrestling Club hosted the AAU State Championships on April 25, at FPC. In the Varsity Division, Michael DeAugustino defeated two state-place winners to take his weight division, and Kaz Maia took down a state runnerup in the finals to win his weight division. Evyn Insalaco and Justin Haaf both won silver medals, and Michael Martins and Tariq Johnson third and fourth, respectively.

Those that placed in the Junior Varsity Division include Trace Insalaco and Camaree Shavers, who both won their weight divisions; Tyrone Jones, Anthony Mascraella and Dylan Borges, who all took second. Jason Muniz was the lone third-place finisher, and Shane Butler got fourth.

Matanzas runs wild Matanzas High School got the ball rolling Tuesday, relying on their running game and defense.

In two quick half-games, the Matanzas Pirates showed they might be a force to be reckoned with this fall.

Matanzas first played University Christian, which accord-

ing to coach Robert Ripley, have three potential Division I players.

The Pirates started off the game by giving 14 points to University Christian in the opening minutes, one by fumble recovery, but after those minutes, they went off running.

After University Christian

scored their final touchdown of the night, Matanzas’ Rahkim Perry took the ball and ran 63 yards for a score.

“You have to get those runs in with a great offensive line,” Perry said. “I am proud.”

Sophomore Corey Steward followed that with a show of his own. Immediately after Steward sacked University’s quarterback on defense, he jumped on offense and ran for a touchdown to tie the game.

“We stumbled a little bit coming out of the gate,” Ripley said.

“Those junior varsity guys came out and got after it, and that’s what ignited our offense.”

In the second game, against Father Lopez, the Pirates showed no signs of slowing down.

“You have your peaks and your valleys, and sometimes you’re going to be up or you’re going to be down,” said Daniel Dillard, who ran for over 150 yards on the night said. “For me, though, I like to peak. I like to stay on top. … There’s definitely more to see from Matanzas this year.”

Ripley also complimented Dillard’s performance on Tuesday and could not shy away from bringing the numbers to the table, saying, “Dillard ran for 1,200 yards last year, but he made everyone pay tonight.”

Quarterback MacKenzy Wagner then threw a smooth 27-yard pass to junior wide receiver Phillip Moultrie to get the Pirates within three yards of scoring.

Wagner then put the finishing touch on the drive by scrambling through the defense for the touchdown.

Matanzas followed with another touchdown by Perry and finally by senior running back Doug Wilson as they cruised to a 21-0 victory.

“We were working with our running game, and we weren’t going to stop because it was working so well,” Ripley said. “We didn’t have to search for answers.”

Even though things seemed to be heading in the right direction, Ripley still believes there is room for improvement.

“If you look back on our season last year, we just were not good on offense,” said Ripley, who was 2-7 in his first season. “We’ve got to get better in our passing game and have our defense develop the tempo to give us a shot at putting the other team away. That’s where we got to get too.”

“That’s our mentality, bringing our people up and wearing the other team down,” he added.

“I felt like we could do it, and we did, and we’re going to go to work, so there’s more of this to come.

This is only going to get better.”

Coaches get first look at new teams While the score didn’t matter, players were anxious to put on the pads one last time before next season.

With cheerleaders present, fans cheering and referees on hand, the Flagler Palm Coast and Seabreeze spring game felt like the real deal on Thursday, May 21, at FPC. FPC won 14-10.

Coaches Tom Moody (FPC) and Skip Saunier (Seabreeze) led their troops out for the first time as head coach, after the Caesar Campana retired from FPC and Marc Beach took another coaching position in Georgia.

The game was filled with expected turnovers, which was expected, but everyone who dressed saw the field.

Quarterback Dalton Thomas ran a

three-yard touchdown, and Que’Shaun Byrd added another three-yard score for the Bulldogs.

Noah Motto converted a 41-yard field goal, and Ed DeFeo ran a oneyard touchdown for the Sandcrabs.

“All went well,” Saunier said. “We got to play everyone, as did FPC. That game was just a glance into the future.”

The two boys and their fellow sixth-graders at Belle Terre Elementary, which has a flagship program called iRECS — Innovation, Robotics, Engineering and Computer Science — were building Rube Goldberg machines, contraptions that use basic physics principles and ordinary household items to do ordinary things, like popping a Menthos into a glass of Coke, in unusual ways.

At an expo held throughout the school’s classrooms the evening of May 21, students showed off their Rube Goldberg machines and other projects.

Teacher Cassie Meyers said the school has been using the Goldberg machine project as a way to teach sixth-graders about basic physics for several years.

Her class has worked on theirs for about an hour a day for three weeks.

“We’ve been doing a lot of force of motion, so that’s what a lot of this is,” she said.

“So it’s like, what angle works, the chain reaction, and the pushing and pulling.”

A sixth-grader from another class, Abigail Lee, said the machine she’d worked on with some classmates took several minutes to set up for each run.

She enjoyed the project.

“I learned teamwork, responsibility, and just to have fun overall,” she said.

At another computer, a similar wired celery setup controlled the arrow keys in a game of Tetris.

In another sixth-grade classroom, students Tommy Tep, James Luong and Nicholas Vilay showed off a Lego model of the White House they’d built with a few other students as part of a project about the building’s engineering and history.

Other students had built replicas of the Lincoln Memorial and the United Nations headquar-

ters, in a project to integrate engineering into an English language arts and social studies class, said teacher Alexis Prince.

“The focus was not on building, per se, but the research and presenting the technology,” she said.

Vilay said his group put together a presentation on the White House and its history, looking up original blueprints and creating a time-lapse video that showed the students building the model.

“We learned that there’s a lot more than just building,” he said.

“You really have to plan how the building should be made. And we learned a lot about the White House.”

As the expo ended and the stu-

dents started putting away their work, Belle Terre Principal Terence Culver and Assistant Principal Anna Crawford held a ribbon cutting for the school’s new iPad lab, called the FLOAT lab.

“We needed a space for our primary kids,” Crawford said.

“We looked at what we needed in terms of supporting our standards, and this is what we came up with.”

The new lab, set up in a room attached to the school’s media center, has 22 iPads, a large flatscreen TV and a selection educational software programs.

Bodil Haheim moved to Flagler Beach after inheriting her father’s house.

Flagler Beach author shares story of hope ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Bodil Haheim grew up in a household of hatred in Norway, where her father beat her down physically, mentally and emotionally until she mustered up the courage to escape to the United States in 2013.

She moved to Nashville to pursue her dream of singing and songwriting, but the dark passengers of her childhood stayed with her. She turned to drug abuse to cope with the depression, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress that her past physical and emotional abuse had led to. Writing poetry and songs was an emotional outlet for Haheim, and, while living in a Nashville homeless shelter, she made the decision to start writing her life story.

“It always came back, and I just needed to get it out of my head,” Haheim said.

Haheim travelled to Detroit, where she spent the next seven months living in a motel, volunteering at a church and writing her story, which eventually became a self-published book, “Better Believe: A Story of Hope,” under the pen name Ruby Lee Tuesday.

“There’s a lot of tragedy and darkness in my past, and I wanted to put it somewhere,” she said.

“It’s hard to acknowledge a lot of the things that happened to me.

But when you write, it’s very therapeutic — to get rid of something bad, you have to deal with it.”

In dealing with and overcoming her past, Haheim wanted to bring hope to those in similar situations.

“If one person can come through it, then there’s a lot of

hope for a lot of people with problems in their lives,” she said, while sitting in a booth at the BeachHouse Beanery in Flagler Beach.

“For me, it was necessary. When you keep things in your mind and don’t talk about it, it becomes a major problem. But when you put it out there, and deal with it — it’s a big part of the healing — to get rid of the guilt and the shame. It can inspire someone to tell their story too.”

After completing her book, Haheim moved back to Nashville and was proud to hold her finished book in her hand, a tangible example of her triumph. That’s when her father appeared again.

He had traveled to Nashville to find her. She filed a restraining order against him, and the judge agreed. It was the first time she spoke out against him, her biggest victory and the last thing that happened in her relationship with him.

Her father died a month later, and, after an inheritance battle, Haheim was granted his house in Flagler Beach.

“Yes, it’s ironic, but it’s a big victory,” she said. “When I think about it, I’m just happy, almost speechless.”

Haheim moved to Flagler Beach in October and is using her life by the ocean to restart her life. She hopes to use her music, poetry and book to talk to youth about choices and consequences in life. Through her life experiences, Haheim said one of the more important things she learned is to always believe in your dreams, always do what is right and never lose hope.

“As long as you’re breathing, there is always hope,” she said.

“There’s always an opportunity to grow and learn things. And to be here, in Flagler Beach, and in this community, to recoup and be around nice people, it’s just a gift.

I’m very grateful to be here.”

Navy veteran embarks on new venture Palm Coast resident Joe Verrechio left a stable position to start his own company, Absolute Electrical Services.

The 6-foot-5, energetic Joe Verrechio would be the first to say he didn’t start his new business, Absolute Electrical Services, on his own. He was inspired and trained by many people along the way, first in line being the United States Navy.

When Verrechio was 12 years old, his mother died, and just two years later, his brother died, too.

“That was a tough, tough time for me,” he said. “I could’ve turned to a million different things as a kid, but tinkering with things became my lifeblood. That’s what sparked my interest: the simple desire to know how something worked.”

As a grief-coping strategy, Verrechio began fiddling with broken TVs, radios, fans — anything he could get his hands on — and meticulously taking them apart. That work even shows in his current house, where he has transformed his garage into a professional office and another bedroom for one of his children.

His desire to dissect electrical objects led to his enlistment into the Navy, where he learned and worked interior communications in the electrical division on the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

“With everything I do, I go at it with that military pride,” Verrechio said. “And, based on my military experience, I will always give 10% discounts to veterans, active military, paramedics, firemen and all emergency service personnel. I just have a tremendous appreciation, and I respect everything they do.”

After getting out of the military and not being able to find a communications job, Verrechio searched through the Yellow Pages and joined Palmetto Electrical under Frank Dudley Sr. While working at Palmetto Electric, he befriended a coworker, Joe Wright, who now owns Quantum Electric. After Palmetto, Verrechio worked at other electrical companies before spending three years at Palm Coast Data. Seeking something on his own, Wright provided him the moral support and a friendly push to go out on his own.

“Sometimes, you just need a little nudge, and that’s what he provided for me,” said Verrechio, about his friend.

From his Palmetto years to the last years at Palm Coast Data, Verrechio was sought after by many electrical companies in and around the area. Those same companies and those he’s worked with are very supportive of his new journey that he began on April 6.

On the day he opened Absolute Electrical Solutions, those who were familiar with his work ethic and experience reached out to him.

“I will build, and I will have a very successful company,” Verrechio said. “I really believe in that.

With all that I have been taught, all that I believe in, and with my family behind me, there can’t be any other outcome.”

Verrechio prides himself in his customer service and his ability to connect to customers on a personal level, which he credits his father, Vinny Verrechio, and his previous mentor, Mark Strattmann, for teaching him.

Playing against 51 other teams, Schultz increased the value of her stock portfolio by over $19,000 in only six months.

Brothers and graduating seniors Stefano and Angelo Schibeci wanted to end their run as Matanzas High School Key Club president and vice president with a bang. Hosting a color run 5k complete with colorful powder was that bang.

With help of the Kiwanis Club of Flagler County and the Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club, they flooded the schools with flyers and did their own marketing on social media. They even recorded a spot on WNZF. The brothers hoped to put on an event that would instill a sense of giving back to all participants, as they were contributing to the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project is an effort that Key Club International focused its attention on. By raising money

Wilson, Scarol and O’Grady dominate Math Olympics After working hard on memorizing multiplication all year, the third-graders at Imagine School Town Center competed in the Multiplication Olympics Friday, May 15. Students competed in three events designed to challenge their automatic recall of the multiplication facts.

“Our second year hosting the

Multiplication Olympics in third grade was a great event that really got the kids excited about memorizing their multiplication facts,” said Heather Overton, event organizer. “As a teacher, I can see an improvement in how quickly they know their facts due to this event. My daughter is in third grade this year, and as a parent, I watched as she went from sort of knowing her facts, to really mastering them in about three weeks as we prepared and practiced for the Multiplication Olympics. The kids really find the event motivating.”

The three top students in each event were awarded a medal. Savannah O’Grady won the overall trophy after compet-

ing against all the medalists and the champion from 2014.

Other semi-finalists were Micah Wilson and Gaetano Scarol.

Gold medal winners were Madison Long, Scarol, Wilson, Lily Puritis, Josh Posner, Summer Barnes, Trista Rife and Danny Wells.

Silver medal winners were Kameran Gordon, Carl Burger, Jeremiah Donoso, Ciara Glover, Leilana King, Nigel Njok, O’Grady and Xy’Kera Bell.

The following is an adapted news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office: Members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Observer Patrol Program have completed specialized training in Traffic Crash Investigations.

Five COPs were recognized May 18 in a ceremony at the Sheriff’s Office Palm Coast Precinct location.

The Traffic Crash Investigators is a group of volunteer staff who can respond to and handle investigations of crashes with minor injury. The course is 80 hours, and each COP must pass a written exam as well as complete an additional 40 hours of field training.

Palm Coast resident aided by new hospital technology Wound care advances are now available locally.

The following is adapted from a news release from Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center: Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, in Daytona Beach, has a new device to help patients with chronic, nonhealing wounds and foot ulcers, one of the more common complications associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Called the LUNATM Fluorescence Micro-angiography System, this device is used to help assess a patient’s blood flow.

The center is the first in Florida to provide the system, according

to Lindsay Rew, assistant director of communications.

Despite appropriate treatment, diabetics and patients with other debilitating conditions often suffer chronic, nonhealing wounds.

“Ensuring adequate blood supply to tissue is critical to helping wounds heal,” said Dr. Stephen Levine, medical director.

The LUNATM system uses fluorescence imaging, which is similar to X-ray, but does not involve exposure to radiation and contrast agents.

McCrohan does not have diabetes, but was one of the first patients to benefit from this new technology, Rew said.

Last year, McCrohan, 91, had radiation treatment for a skin cancer lesion on her left calf. When the wound didn’t heal, she was sent to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine for treatment.

On April 14, McCrohan was one of eight patients to undergo the LUNA procedure. Doctors were able to identify areas with poor blood flow and alter her treatment.

The following is an update for permit activity in the city for May 14-20. Total number of all permits issued: 298. Since 2009, $705 million in construction dollars have been invested in Palm Coast.

NOTICE City of Palm Coast WATER CUSTOMERS TEMPORARY MODIFICATION OF DISINFECTION TREATMENT PROCEDURES In order to maintain the reliability of the water distribution system serving our customers, the City of Palm Coast Utility Department will temporarily change the disinfection process for the Palm Coast potable (drinking water) water supply. From June 1, through June 6, 2015 we will disinfect the water with free chlorine rather than combined chlorine/ammonia (chloramines). This change will also affect residents and customers of Flagler County Utilities. The periodic and temporary conversion from chloramines (which are a longer-lasting disinfectant) to free chlorine (which is a stronger disinfectant), helps to ensure the quality of the drinking water in the distribution system. The maintenance program, which is a normal procedure for water systems, is supported by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and will include daily testing to monitor water quality and measure the effectiveness of the program. After this process is completed, we will revert to disinfection by the chloramines method.
