Greg Miller, of The Big Year movie, to speak at new city festival, Birds of a Feather Internationally known birder Greg Miller, whose story was the subject of “The Big Year” motion picture starring Jack Black, is one of three keynote speakers for the Feb. 6-8 Birds of a Feather Fest. Miller will speak at the opening night dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 55 Town Center Blvd., Palm Coast. This new city of Palm Coast event is geared toward serious birders, as well as beginners and families. A good number of the birding trips offered will be on paved trails in and around Palm Coast, making birding accessible to children and people with disabilities. The Birds of a Feather Fest is the brainchild of Palm Coast residents and birding enthusiasts Jason and Mary Giraulo. Jason Giraulo is the City’s Digital Communications Coordinator and Director of the new festival. The other keynote speakers for the event are former President of Florida Audubon Society and environmental policy expert Clay Henderson and avid birders Joe and Judy Dziak, who have been monitoring an eagle pair at Princess Place Preserve in Palm Coast for the past 18 years. “With our trails and beaches, Palm Coast is a birder’s paradise,” Giraulo said. “Our event has great bird walks, classes and speakers for serious birders, but we also wanted to introduce people of all ages to the joy of birding. We hope our families will spend the weekend exploring this fun outdoor activity.” To register for the speaker dinners/lunches or any of the birding trips, classes, or fun family activities planned for the Birds of a Feather Fest, visit www.birdingfest. com or call 986-2484. Tickets for the dinners are $35 each, and the lunch presentation is $25. Festival participants can choose as much or as little as they’d like over the three days, and some activities are free. Some 30 birding trips and classes will be offered, to such outstanding birding spots in and around Palm Coast. The festival also offers plenty of activities for non-birders, too. There are kayak trips and craft projects for the little ones. A complete schedule for the Birds of a Feather Fest is at www. birdingfest.com, and registration is now open. Participants must register, even for free activities. — Text adapted from city of Palm Coast press releases
