Palm Coast: Weeks still has not cooperated
Flagler County’s own version of the hit TV show, “The Amazing Race” will hit the streets of Flagler this Saturday, March 1, with group challenges and clues throughout the county. The Great Flagler Race is not a foot race, but rather an adventure race game stretching from The Hammock to Bunnell and Flagler Beach to Palm Coast. Each team of five, ages 13 and up, will travel throughout Flagler to earn points for completing challenges, and there will be Easter eggs to collect all along the way. The winning team will receive cash and sponsored prizes. All participants will be given a consolation prize bag of small sponsor gifts and a T-shirt. The race will begin and end at the European Village. Cost of play is $5 per person. Register and pay by Thursday, Feb. 27. Payments can be made thru PayPal at TheGreatFlaglerRace@gmail. com.

Veterans George Hatzenbuhler, Lee Marshall and Ian Mackenzie, all three pilots during World War II and now residents of Flagler County, were on hand to receive the proclamation. The proclamation was also presented by Flagler County Commission Chairman George Hanns to some 25 veterans at the Gratitude America Retreat Feb. 16 at Marineland’s Whitney Hall for post 9/11 veterans. “It is an honor to be able to present these proclamations to our veterans,” Hanns said.

The six-laning of Palm Coast Parkway is scheduled to begin Monday, city officials said. Daytona Beach-based P & S Paving Inc. will do the work, which will includes construct-
ing 8-foot-wide pedestrian walkways on both sides of Palm Coast Parkway. New turning lanes at Cypress Point Parkway will also be added, as well as 458 trees. The total contract amount is $10.5 million. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2015. Motorists and other travelers should expect nighttime lane closures along Palm Coast Park-
way between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. Up-to-date information about road blockages and/or detours will be posted online at palmcoastpkwy.com. A project hotline number has been established to assist the public with questions and concerns at 1-800-515-9194.

In two months, the city would need to prepare to conduct its own election. The 2014 city elections are looming, and Palm Coast still doesn’t know if it’s going to have to conduct its own election or if Flagler County Supervisor of Elections Kimberle Weeks will include the two City Council seats on the county ballot. At least that’s what city officials said at Tuesday morning’s workshop. City Councilman Bill McGuire again brought up the issue during the non-agenda items portion of the meeting. “There’s a rumor the city of Palm Coast is going to hold an election this year,” McGuire said, asking for more information. City Attorney Bill Reischmann reiterated that his office and the city clerk’s office have been working “very diligently” to try and have the 2014 elections conducted by Weeks’ office. Should the city have to conduct its own election, though, officials are concerned over the cost and the inconvenience for taxpayers and voters. Volunteers and temporary employees might have to be hired. Current employees might have to take on elections responsibilities instead of the work they’re currently handling. “The negative impact on the voters of this community would be immeasurable,” Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts said. Among the issues being disputed is whether an item on the 2011 election should be considered valid. On that ballot, citizens of Palm Coast overwhelmingly approved moving City Council elections from odd years to even years, which would synchronize them with county, state and national elections. However, Weeks informed the city in 2013 that state law requires such a vote to be held “at the next general election …
