For example, Monty uses a tactic parents of young children everywhere will recognize: the time-out. Horses themselves will temporary isolate a family member as a form of discipline. By using the animal’s own method of communication, Monty gains its trust and the horse (usually within a very short time) will join him, and do as he asks, voluntarily. Monty and his wife Pat successfully applied the tenets of ‘join-up’ in raising their own three kids and 47 foster children. It’s this basic philosophy of ‘joining up’ that all parents can take into the home: the parent, as teacher, creates a peaceful, non-violent environment in which the child, as student, can willingly follow instructions and learn. Peaceful parenting is not a new concept, but it is important that parents realize how crucial the environment is to cooperation. Like horses, children (and people of all ages for that matter) perform better when requested to do something rather than are forced to do it. The pay-off is having a willing child in your home, one who wants to be part of the family group with all the responsibilities and joys that go with it.

With this understanding, then, an ageappropriate behavior (or incentive) chart can be created. It simply outlines the effects of the child’s actions: positive behavior attracts positive consequences; negative behavior attracts negative consequences. Again, this is not a new teaching device, but it is a peaceful and respectful approach. Cover till clams slightly open then incorporate your scungilli (conch), and a tasty precooked roma plum tomato marinara that is seasoned with fresh basil, pepper and garlic. Let ingredients simmer for 8 to 10 minutes then add fresh sliced calamari (squid) and your choice of fish filet. Cover and simmer for an additional 4 minutes or until calamari is tender. The other day I witnessed an interaction between two clients. One client with a big, beautiful Golden Retriever walked in. Another client approached and said, “What a great looking dog! I used to have one when I was a kid.” He reached over to pet the dog but the owner politely asked him not to. She was

apologetic but assertive. “I can tell he’s feeling a little stressed and a stranger petting him now will make him feel even more anxious. I’m going to take him to a quiet spot to try to get him to relax.” The man looked confused and pointed out that the dog was wagging his tail but complied with the owner’s request. I was very impressed. Not only did this owner look out for the emotional well being of her dog, but she also understood the subtle signs he was showing indicating a low level of stress. Not many dog owners would have picked up on those signals. After a short time the dog visibly relaxed when he realized his owner was looking out for him and not placing him in a situation he couldn’t handle.

Dogs can’t talk but they have an incredibly expressive tool for sending messages - their own bodies. If we humans were half as good at reading their signals as they are at reading ours, we’d have a lot less miscommunication between our species. The more you learn about your dog’s body language, the better you’ll be at intervening appropriately, before your dog is compelled to growl, snap or bite, or just become more anxious and stressed. Despite a widely held belief, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog. What other signals do dogs use to communicate?
