Note from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to the world premiere of The Messenger by Jenny Connell Davis, PBD’s resident playwright.

By now, most of you are aware that the play was inspired by the life of Hungarian Holocaust survivor Georgia Gabor. I first heard about Georgia from her daughter, Roberta Golub, and was so intrigued that I set out to learn more. After reading Georgia’s autobiography and watching an archival interview, I told Roberta that her mother’s story had the makings of a play. I took the idea to Jenny, who also William Hayes Producing Artistic Director came under Georgia’s spell. She ran with the concept in ways I never imagined, writing a meditation on the ties between past, present, and future as she explores and connects Holocaust denialism, free speech in schools, and anti-Asian discrimination in present-day America.

It is, I believe, the most important play we’ve ever produced at PBD. Hate crimes have been steadily increasing these past few years, and the numbers for 2022 were the worst since the FBI began collecting data in 1991. Every minority group was affected, but the majority of victims were disproportionately Blacks, the LGBTQ community, and Jews. It is all insidious, as The Messenger demonstrates. Anti-Asian hate crime soared during the pandemic. In 2021, the number was 339 percent higher than the record high the previous year.

A noted historian recently said, “Rising anti-Semitism is an absolute red flag. Anti-Semitism almost always goes with a rise in Fascist ideation. It’s something that we can’t ignore.”

Many of the people I’m closest to are Jewish, and they were uneasy, to put it mildly, prior to October 7, 2023. Now they’re frightened by the onslaught of anti-Semitism and threats of violence on college campuses, on social media, and in political discourse; saddened and hurt by people they have considered friends and allies who have remained silent; and sickened by those who cheered the brutality of the October 7 attack or have torn down posters of hostages being held by Hamas. This is not about taking sides in the Mideast; Islamophobia is also on the rise, and that’s equally reprehensible.

Georgia Gabor understood scapegoating all too well, and was insistent that we acknowledge the agony of any group persecuted for being “other.” Yes, she spoke up about her experiences because she wanted the world to never forget. But she was also delivering a message; she realized that no country, no ethnic group, no race, no religion, no minority of any kind, is immune from man’s inhumanity to man. She was warning us that we must be vigilant and diligent about calling out hate wherever we see it. To do otherwise is to be complicit.

At a virtual PTA meeting, she is introduced to the charismatic Irie, another single parent, and their immediate attraction causes Ezra to reconsider the limits of her Covid bubble.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 5 AT 7:30PM STOCKADE by Andrew Rosendorf Five years after the end of WWII, a group of gay soldiers gathers for a reunion on Fire Island. They are met by an outsider with a surprise that will cause them to question whether history is best left in the past. At a time when “security risk” is government code for “homosexual,” it will take courage for them to step out of the shadows and confront their present and future.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 6 AT 3PM COLOR BLIND by Oren Safdie In 2009, a jury was tasked with selecting an architect to design the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. This play is a fictionalized account of how that panel of diverse people and ideas may have come together – or been pulled apart – in making its decision, and in so doing, challenges the audience to consider the state of our current civil discord.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 6 AT 7:30PM EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL HAPPENS AT NIGHT by Ted Malawer Ezra is a successful children’s book writer. Nancy is his longtime editor. They are always on the same page, until someone new threatens to disrupt their friendship and influence Ezra’s next book. Set in 1980s Manhattan, this play explores the legacy of an artist, the meaning of intimacy, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 7 AT 3PM LITTLE ROW BOAT by Kirsten Greenidge When 14-year-old Sally Hemings travels to Paris as nursemaid to her half-sister’s young daughter, the world appears to have opened much wider than Thomas Jefferson’s post-revolutionary Virginia plantation on which she was born.

It is not until Sally’s brother James, also in France as he trains to be a chef de cuisine, points out the peculiarities of their circumstances that Sally begins to question the kindnesses their “master” has extended to them.

Georgia Gabor’s Students Have Their Say

Hungarian Holocaust survivor Georgia Gabor (1930 - 1994) came to the United States in 1948 and, after raising a family, began teaching in 1969. She taught math for 21 years in the San Marino Unified School District in California, and sometime after My Destiny, her autobiography, was published in 1981, swastikas and other anti-Semitic obscenities began turning up in her classroom and elsewhere at Huntington Middle School. But those acts of hate just tell part of the story. By various accounts, Gabor seems to have been much admired by most of her students.

Some of them provided testimonials on YouTube after seeing her archival interview about the Holocaust; others commented on Amazon, in response to My Destiny, and elsewhere. Following are some of those memories and tributes. They have been lightly edited, mostly for punctuation and space, occasionally for clarity, but the words of each contributor have been left almost entirely intact.

Aimee: You pushed us to be better people. Better humans.

I just wanted to send my good thoughts and love to you.

I know you taught from the heart. Always. . . . If one was ever lucky enough to be around you, they never forgot you! As I will not.

Emmanuel: I was her teacher’s assistant when I was in the 8th grade. When she would tell her story, the classroom was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. This was before she wrote her book, My Destiny.

Destiny. Thank you, Ms. Gabor for allowing me to be your teacher’s assistant.

Clariece: I had Ms. Gabor in both 7th and 8th grade, in 1972 and 1973. Her love of teaching was clear even to someone as mathematically challenged as I was. More important was her love of the students and her desire that we understand history and the horrible things we do to each other. I never witnessed any anti-Semitic abuse against her at the time. I was raised in San Marino in the ’60s and ’70s. My dad was first generation Italian. When we moved into our home, my mom was visited by a group called “The Welcome Wagon.” A lovely group of ladies (deep sarcasm) who peppered my mother with all sorts of questions about my dad’s background and hers. [My mother] was clearly a WASP so she was accepted and even invited to join some fairly exclusive groups, which she declined to do.

M: One of my favorite teachers. She pushed and challenged me and she loved Godzilla movies. RIP Johnny: I still remember her algebra formulas! Great teacher!

Judy: Ms. Gabor was my math teacher in 1969, when I was in 7th grade. She was dynamic, smart, funny, and inspired me to do better in math. We moved out of San Marino in early 1970 and I had no idea that she had written a book or that she was hounded and harassed by people who lived there. I’m so sorry she had to endure all that, and that the school district didn’t back her and stop the problem. I wish I could give her a hug and tell her how much she meant to me that year. Maybe now she finally has some peace.

Marhuka: [Her book] is an unapologetic historical account of a very dark period of human history. . . . I knew the author as a 7th grade student in her math class. With special permission, we were given the opportunity to hear her “Life Story” on numerous occasions. It was a riveting testimony of human cruelty. Ms. Gabor did not sanitize history for us, as most revisionist historical accounts are told. It was more beneficial to us to hear a first-hand account of the events. Her story of survival and terror mirrors [those of] several others I have since met, escaping Romania, Germany and Cuba. . . . This is not light reading. It challenges you to think and consider the choices the author made at a very young age. Well-written and articulated. It should be mandatory reading for junior high school students.

Anon: Ms. Gabor stood out among teachers for her aliveness, passion, deep intelligence, resilience, humanity, true heroism, and grit.

Maria: Ms. Gabor was a hard teacher and very good . . .

I remember in the 1970s she would share a little of her memoirs, apparently as she was working on them. I am glad to have a copy of this complete text for myself because she was a great influence in my life . . . I became a teacher also. palmbeachdramaworks.org 13

JENNY CONNELL DAVIS (Playwright) is delighted to return to PBD with The Messenger after sharing it during last season’s New Year/New Plays Festival (now the Perlberg Festival of New Plays), and to do so as the company’s newly named resident playwright. Jenny is an affiliated artist with the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, a member of The Gift Theatre in Chicago, and in-house writer for the award-winning Baobab Studios, where she helps develop television, film, and book projects. Her plays have been developed or produced nationwide, including at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference, Chance Theatre, ACT (Seattle), Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, Shrewd Productions, and Asolo Rep. As a screenwriter, Jenny has sold projects to Sony, Disney/Fox, Amazon, and Iconoclast/Anonymous Content.

She has been a finalist and semi-finalist for the Nicholl Fellowship, and her short films have screened worldwide, including at Toronto and SXSW. Jenny trained as an actor at Steppenwolf, and in playwriting at UT Austin.

WILLIAM HAYES (Director) is the producing artistic director and a founding member of PBD. He has directed some 50 productions for the company: his credits run the gamut of playwrights from A (Edward Albee) to Z (Paul Zindel), and include William Inge, Eugène Ionesco, David Mamet, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, and August Wilson. Bill is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Florida Professional Theatre Association’s Richard G. Fallon Award for Excellence in Professional Theatre (2017), a Silver Palm Award presented by the South Florida Theatre League “for his outstanding work as Producing Artistic Director” of PBD (2014), and, with Sue Ellen Beryl, the REMY Pioneer Award presented by the South Florida Theatre League (2015).

Bill served two terms as president of the Florida Professional Theatres Association, and is a national ambassador for the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund).

He began his career as an actor, and returned to the stage last season in PBD’s acclaimed

production of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men. JESSICA CHEN (Assistant Director) is an American dancer and choreographer based in New York City, who is known for creating “visceral ...emotionally charged movements and choreography.”

She is the founder and artistic director of J CHEN PROJECT, a nonprofit contemporary dance company with a mission to create dance works that emphasize identity, cultural diversity, and belonging.

Her choreography has been featured at New York Fashion Week at MoMA, Lincoln Center’s Restart Stages, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and global platforms including the World Expo-USA Pavilion in Shanghai, and a Google Arts & Culture feature by the Asian American Arts Alliance. Jessica choreographed Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella at Geva Theatre and Jersey Boys for Weathervane Theatre. Current projects include AAPI Heroes: Myths and Legends, Spring Awakening, The Messenger, and Cabaret. She was a 2021 GALLIM Moving Artist-in-Residence, 2021 Dance Lab New York Choreographer, and 2023 Bessie Award nominee for Outstanding Choreographer/Creator. ANNE MUNDELL (Scenic Design) was recently named resident scenic designer at PBD, where she previously designed A Streetcar Named Desire (Carbonell Award), Equus, and Arcadia. Design work includes scenery, projection, costume, and lighting design. Genres include theatre, museum exhibitions, parade floats, industrial design, opera, symphony, and dance. She has worked for such organizations as Pittsburgh Public Theater, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Pittsburgh City Theatre, Utah Musical Theatre, Carnegie Museum of Art, Quantum Theatre, Hangar Theatre, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, St. Michael’s Playhouse, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Black Hills Playhouse, and Players Theatre Columbus. Anne just retired from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, where she was a professor of scenic design for 33 years. She is the recipient of the Robert M. Frankel Award for Contribution to the Arts, the Ryan Award for Meritorious Teaching, The Hornbostel Award for Teaching Excellence in the College of Fine Arts, and was named one of Pittsburgh’s best professors by Pittsburgh Magazine. Anne is director and founder of Growing Theater, an outreach program, and one of the founders of the internationally recognized Roboceptionist Project, a social robotics collaboration between the CMU Robotics Institute and the School of Drama. mundellacademic.com

BRIAN O’KEEFE (Costume Design) began designing for PBD in 2009, became costume shop manager and resident designer in 2015, and has designed over 60 shows here. He has received 11 Carbonell Award nominations, winning for Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Lion in Winter, and A Doll’s House, and was a Silver Palm Award recipient in 2022. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, he spent his earlier career as a patternmaker for the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC and major costume houses in New York, including Barbara Matera, Ltd., Parsons-Meares, Michael-Jon Costumes, and Eaves-Brooks. He was later resident designer, principal patternmaker, and shop manager for Seaside Music Theatre in Daytona Beach, spending 16 years designing over 75 productions and supervising 90 more. Other regional design credits: Playmakers Repertory Theatre, Orlando Repertory Theatre, Winter Park Playhouse, St. Augustine’s Limelight Theatre, University of Central Florida. ADAM J. THOMPSON (Video Design) is the recipient of the 2023 USITT and Live Design Rising Star Award, recognizing early career excellence, innovation, and artistic achievement in the field of design. He is a creative director, creative producer, and multimedia designer working in theatre, opera, cinema, television, installation, events, and digital narratives, and is the founding artistic director of The Deconstructive Theatre Project, a nonprofit multimedia storytelling and arts education studio, which he created and led from 2006 - 2016. He has worked Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, and across the US, and his work has been recognized with awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Jerome Robbins Foundation, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. He holds a BA in directing and dramaturgy from

ROGER ARNOLD (Sound Design) was named PBD’s production manager prior to the start of the season. He has been a freelance sound engineer and designer for over 35 years. He is a voting member of both NARAS (the Grammys) and the Audio Engineering Society (AES.org).

Roger became an educator of music technology in 2006 and was the senior music technology professor at the University of New Haven. During his tenure there, he designed and provided sound for The Rocky Horror Show, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and Spring Awakening. In 2018, he relocated to South Florida, and in 2019 he became sound engineer and resident sound designer for PBD, where his credits include Lobby Hero, Topdog/Underdog, August: Osage County, The Science of Leaving Omaha, Twelve Angry Men, 4000 Miles, The Belle of Amherst, Intimate Apparel, The Duration, Almost, Maine, The People Downstairs, and Skylight.

Other sound design credits include Empire Stage’s production of Tru. BA in music and sound recording, University of New Haven. MA in music technology, University of Newcastle.

TYLER B. OSGOOD (Assistant Stage Manager) has worked on various educational and community engagement programs at PBD (theAcademy@pbd’s Songs for a New World, production stage manager; The Legacy Project, stage manager; the One Humanity Tour, both sixth and seventh grade, assistant stage manager), while also assisting on all productions since the 2021-22 season, beginning with The People Downstairs. One Humanity Tour Live to Tell, 2023

Many of you are likely aware that Palm Beach Dramaworks has a robust education department. But you may not be aware of the impact our educational programs are having on students throughout Palm Beach County. So, from time to time, we will be spotlighting one of these program, each of which demonstrates how theatre can have a profound effect on young, curious minds.

Florida has a significant human trafficking problem. Since the National Human Trafficking Hotline began keeping track of reported cases around the country in 2007, Florida has consistently ranked third, behind only California and Texas. In 2021, the most recent year for which there are complete national statistics compiled by the hotline, there were 781 reported cases of human trafficking in Florida: of those, 574 were trafficked for sex. Roughly 20% of all those who were trafficked were minors.

Since 2020, PBD has been bringing awareness of this lurking danger to the county’s students with Live to Tell, a play by Eric Coble about human trafficking and online safety that was commissioned by Director of Education and Community Engagement Gary Cadwallader and Producing Artistic Director William Hayes. In this powerful piece, three 15-year-old girls from very different backgrounds reveal how they were preyed upon by savvy predators and trapped in the world of sex trafficking. The play is presented free to seventh grade students.

Live to Tell is one of two plays that currently make up PBD’s One Humanity Tour, a professional touring program. It began in 2017 with a commissioned play for sixth graders called Swagger, also written by Coble, which addresses the tensions between the public and law enforcement from different vantage points. Performances of both plays are followed by a talkback, and there are supplemental materials for teachers and administrators. (When the 2024-25 school year begins, a third play by Coble will be added to the tour. This one is for eighth graders, and will be about opioid awareness.)

The One Humanity Tour was created with assistance from the School District of Palm Beach County and the West Palm Beach Police Department, and conceived out of the conviction that theatre can contribute to the development of informed, thoughtful, and compassionate citizens. Swagger, which has thus far played to 24,497 students, aims to develop empathy, and a comment by a student from Osceola Creek Middle School typifies the reaction of many others.

For Live to Tell, Cadwallader was guided by local agencies that help track and prosecute traffickers, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the West Palm Beach Police Department, and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as well as trafficking awareness educators like the Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches. The show is offered to seventh graders “because the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says that they are the prime targets of human traffickers,” says Cadwallader. The talkback includes interviews with a behavioral health specialist and a representative from the Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches about online safety, and emphasizes to students how their smartphones are a gateway for traffickers. Students are asked to fill out a post-performance survey, and at the very bottom of the page is a message that says: “If there is a situation in your life where you feel uncomfortable and would like to speak with a trusted adult, please say so below.

Turn in this paper directly to your teacher.” It also provides additional ways to get help.

Live to Tell managed just a few performances in 2020 before everything shut down, and has thus far played to 5,588 students. It was originally scheduled to be performed for close to 7,000 students this year, but reached 2,039 instead due to a new rule. Previously, if parents didn’t want their children to participate in various activities, they had to sign an opt-out slip. But now, parents must opt in for their kids to take part in these events. The rule went into effect after Live to Tell began touring; the remaining performances had to be canceled as there was no time to get permission slips from parents.

It would be heartbreaking if the new procedure keeps audience numbers down going forward, because it’s already clear that students are learning invaluable lessons. “It showed me that I need to talk with an adult when I need help.” “We need to raise awareness.”

“If they know someone that is experiencing this, they can help them by speaking up.” And simply, “I needed to know about this.”

“We know for certain that we are making an impact with students during the performance and talkback, and raising red flags about predatory behavior,” says Cadwallader. “We are not only telling a compelling story of three young people ensnared in trafficking, but hopefully saving young people from falling into the trap of coercion and exploitation. We know that Live to Tell can help save a young person from trauma or death by defining human trafficking and showing them examples of what could happen if you fall prey to traffickers.”
