In this timely, timeless classic, 12 jurors deliberate the fate of a teenager accused of killing his father. As the evidence is weighed, the prejudices and social attitudes of each man are revealed – as are the strengths and flaws of the American justice system.
by Reginald RoseNote from the Producing Artistic Director
Welcome to Amy Herzog’s touching, Obie Award-winning 4000 Miles. As we start the new season, I want to use this space to extend greetings and thanks to numerous people.
First, a warm welcome to Bert Scott – first-time scenic designer with PBD – and the entire cast of 4000 Miles. The play features four actors and an offstage voice, all of whom are making their PBD debuts. All the actors are at the beginning of their careers except Trish Conolly, an international treasure whose illustrious stage career spans three continents and six decades. She has worked with many of the greatest names in theatre, and is married to PBD favorite Colin McPhillamy. I’m delighted that Trish is joining the PBD family.
I also want to welcome back one of South Florida’s most beloved actresses, Barbara Bradshaw, who has appeared in several productions with PBD during her 50-plus-year career and is an understudy in 4000 Miles. We are honored to have her in our midst again.
Speaking of PBD veterans, I also want to recognize some longtime, invaluable colleagues, beginning with the director of 4000 Miles, Resident Director J. Barry Lewis. His first production here was No Exit during the 2003-04 season, and he’s gone on to direct over 40 shows for PBD. Another newcomer to the company in 2003-2004 was Michael Amico, scenic designer extraordinaire, who has designed the sets for more than 55 shows – and counting. Michael is also our production manager, which means that even when he hasn’t designed a show, he is responsible for running our scenic design shop and overseeing every aspect of bringing a set to life. Brian O’Keefe, our brilliant resident costume designer and costume shop manager, has been with us since 2009 and has designed more than 60 shows for PBD. The contributions of all three artists to the company are inestimable.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge two recent additions to our team: Kirk Bookman, resident lighting designer, and Roger Arnold, audio engineer and associate production manager. Kirk did his first designs for PBD during the 2014-15 season, and joined us officially before the start of last season. Roger joined us in 2019. I am grateful to have both these talents on our staff.
Last, but never least, a heartfelt thank you to you, our PBD patrons and friends. When we returned to the theatre last season – almost two months later than planned – there was still a lot of trepidation about sitting in an audience. But you stuck with us and willingly complied with our protocols, and all of us at PBD are so grateful for your steadfast support.

WHY WE GIVE
PBD’s commitment to artistic excellence is a giant asset to the cultural landscape of our community. After living for nearly two whole years without the ability to gather and experience great live storytelling, we are more passionate than ever about the value of what PBD brings to our lives each and every time we visit.
– Louise and Barry SnyderCONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY
A New Column by Development Manager Linda Berman
Greetings! We’re introducing this column to offer tips to patrons about how you can join our efforts to help PBD thrive. I want to begin by shining a spotlight on working together to make newcomers and visitors to our community feel welcome – and in the process, help PBD make new friends and build new audiences.
My husband and I – happy empty nesters with grown children on both coasts - are recent imports from New York who are settling into our new lives here in West Palm Beach. Many of our Northeast family members and friends plan to visit us over the winter months.
We are not alone. Out of the 8.9 million people who moved during the pandemic, 28 percent moved to Florida. The Sunshine State will grow by more than 845 new residents every single day for the next three years. And according to VisitFlorida.com, Florida’s tourism industry was responsible for welcoming 122 million visitors in 2021, representing a 54 percent increase from 2020 – and more than 7.3 million of those tourists visited Palm Beach County.
So how do we help new residents and their family and friends - as well as those traveling here for business or leisure - feel embraced and welcome? PBD has launched some exciting initiatives during our run of 4000 Miles to accomplish exactly that.
With Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association’s support, we hosted a special Hotel Concierge appreciation night at a preview of 4000 Miles. We welcomed more than 50 general managers and hospitality professionals to encourage their valued personal referrals to visitors to experience shows at PBD.
We also created a PBD Theatre Lovers Group on the online platform Meetup.com; our first get-together will be the October 28 performance of 4000 Miles. Members buy tickets individually but sit together in a section of seats set aside for our group, offering a wonderful opportunity to bond with others over our shared interest in theatre. More than 75 newcomers have joined the club, demonstrating a need to foster new friendships while enjoying the performing arts. Join www.meetup.com/palm-beach-dramaworkstheatre-lovers-meetup-group/ to learn more.
So, whether you have traveled 4000 miles to move to Palm Beach County – or merely the 1200 or so from Long Island like us – let’s all extend a hearty welcome to friends old and new in our region.

DID YOU KNOW
Amy Herzog and Leepee Joseph
Although the Obie Award-winning 4000 Miles is not an autobiographical play, Amy Herzog drew from her own life and, especially, the life of her grandmother, Leepee Joseph, a steadfast Communist. Some of the dialogue spoken in the play by 91-year-old Vera was first uttered by Leepee.
Vera – named after Leepee’s older sister – was introduced in a previous play, After the Revolution, in which her granddaughter, Emma, learns a family secret: Joe Joseph, Vera’s late husband and Emma’s much-admired Communist, activist, blacklisted grandfather, likely spied for the Soviet Union during World War II. Taking a page from real life, that’s also the story of Leepee’s second husband, Herzog’s paternal step-grandfather, J. J. Joseph.
Leepee’s first husband, Herzog’s grandfather, was Arthur Herzog, Jr., a songwriter best-known for cowriting “God Bless the Child” with Billie Holiday. In 4000 Miles, Vera talks about her first husband, also named Arthur – a womanizer like his namesake.
Herzog told the online publication Slant Magazine that in 2009, “I heard the news that one of my cousin’s closest friends had been killed in a rafting accident. I had met this young man briefly. That was the seed of 4000 Miles. ” Vera’s grandson, Leo, is somewhat based on Herzog’s cousin.
Herzog, like Leo, took a cross-country bike ride and then went to live with her grandmother. Herzog’s ride was a fundraiser with Habitat for Humanity and took place after she got her BA from Yale in 2000. Her bicycle was used in the Lincoln Center production of 4000 Miles. Herzog lived with Leepee in her grandmother’s Greenwich Village apartment for six months, as she tried to start an acting career. A role in a touring production ended that arrangement. Herzog soon discovered she didn’t enjoy acting, and began writing.
Leepee had also hoped to be an actress. She told The New York Times, “I had talent. But not enough.” She worked offstage for years instead, as secretary for theatre luminaries including producer Cheryl Crawford, composer Marc Blitzstein, and the actresses Kitty Carlisle Hart and Mary Martin. Although she lived to see and was delighted by her granddaughter’s success as a playwright, she remained disappointed that Amy didn’t pursue acting.
Leepee died in her Greenwich Village apartment in 2013, at age 96.
Herzog is married to Sam Gold, the Tony Award-winning director of Fun Home. They have two children.
