On June 29, 2024, Pastor Kenny Hubbell received his Doctor of Ministry Degree.
Congratulations, Rev. Dr. Ken Hubbell!
For the last 3 years, Ken has been working on obtaining his doctorate of ministry degree through Union Presbyterian Seminary. His final project, which consumed the majority of his last year of study, was centered around fatherhood, masculinity, and vulnerability, and how we have greater engagement in the faith formation of our children.
Kenny says, “This was a passion project of mine. I care a great deal about faith formation, but even more so, I care a great deal about being a dad. This was a chance for me to find those things intersecting. I had the privilege to sit and chat with a good many of the fathers of this congregation. Not only did that nurture me and the

relationships I have with them, but taught me so much of what it means to live out faith in the context of a parent.
I’m grateful for the opportunity and for this church’s support that allowed me this opportunity to learn about the things that I most care about. Thank you for the great amounts of support you have given me.”
We rejoice in Pastor Kenny’s graduation along with him!

100% Chance of Rain turned out to be more than just the theme for MusiCamp this summer at PCPC. It was also the meteorologists’ prediction for the weather the week in June that our summer roof replacement project was supposed to start! Despite pushing the project start date back a week, Arry’s Roofing has finished installing 4 new roofs to shelter PCPC, before the start of the school year. A new roof for each of the 4 large buildings on the campus: Westminster, the Sanctuary, Covenant Hall and Eastminster.
PCPC’s old roofs were installed more than 20 years ago. As a part of the hurricane hardening effort, the Building and Grounds Committee had an independent structural engineer analyze what the facility needed. The roofs, he reported, were well past their useful lives, prone to damage and leaks, and very vulnerable to hurricanes.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee, with PCPC Facility Manager Doug Brown, determined that the $400,000 project would need to be completed after VBS, before the peak of hurricane season, and in a way that did not interfere with planned weddings or Sunday worship services. The project occupied the

parking lot with heavy equipment, and we appreciate your forbearance.
New roofing is just the beginning of a growing number of facility improvements that need to be made at PCPC to ensure the best care for the much-used facility. You will be hearing more about those needed improvements in the months to come. Thank you to Arry’s Roofing, especially the roof laborers who did the work in the brutal heat of summer. Their stamina and agility was extraordinary. Thank you also to the Session’s Buildings and Grounds Committee and their capable Chairman, Nelson Guagliardo, and to the staff for the project, Doug Brown, Facilities manager, and Erin Lagor, Church Business Administrator, and to all those who helped to plan, finance, and carry out this substantial project. This team heeded well the exhortation from Ecclesiastes 10:18,“Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks.” This team went to work, and secured the ceilings.

August Clothing Drive for Adult Men & Women
During the month of August, PCPC is focusing on Tampa’s homeless population. Our long-time ministry partner, Faith Café, which is located adjacent to Midtown Tampa, provides daily hot meals, mobile showers, and clothing to those in need. This is all accomplished 100% by volunteers. Their “Angel Closet” provides 350 articles of clothing monthly.
Items Needed:
• Men’s underwear sizes M, L, XL
• Socks (New or used)
• Pants
• Shorts
• T-Shirts
• Women’s casual clothing
• Other used & new clothes for men and women
• Toiletries including disposable razors, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste & toothbrushes
There is a Faith Café bin between the Church Office and the Fellowship Hall. Please leave items at the bin or in the church office.
THANK YOU, PCPC!
Thanks to your caring and wonderful generosity through the Pentecost Offering, Tampa Urban Young Life sent a bus load of high school students to Windy Gap, North Carolina and a large group of middle schoolers to Southwind (Young Life Camp in Florida), including almost all of our students from Feeding Every Disciple (FED) families. Your strong donations totaled over $23,000 and helped get Tampa Urban back on a more stable financial footing, which was such a blessing! Thanks for your continued support!
Walking With A Friend in Grief
Sunday, August 25, 12:15-1:30pm Fellowship Hall
Grief is a loss. We all know that one grieves from the loss of a loved one. We may also grieve from the loss of a relationship, a marriage, an unexpected life-changing diagnosis of a child, the loss of our health, a job loss, the loss of our home or independence, and much more. What should we say (or not say), do (or not do) to help comfort our friend who is grieving?
The Stephen Ministry and Congregational Care Committee will be holding a grief luncheon Sunday, August 25th from 12:15-1:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Committee member Arwen Guida will be guiding us on how to walk with others through their grief.
Come join us for a light lunch and an enlightening discussion on helping our friends as they walk the path of grief. Arwen will be sharing from “Resilient Grief” by Lucy Hohn. If you would like to read the book before the talk August 25th you may, though it is not necessary.
RSVP’s are helpful! SusanFrost@palmaceia.org or 813-253-6047

October 6th – October 20th
As we travel though another contentious and noisy election cycle, the pastoral team invites you to join a discussion about our lives together as Christians and citizens of this country: how do we get along with those whom we disagree, what are healthy ways to handle our anxiety, what is the church’s response to such a polarized world, etc.
WEEKLY PODCASTS - OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAITH FORMATION
A First Look at The Lectionary
The Lectionary Call-In Podcast
Did you know that PCPC pastors and scholars gather each week to explore lectionary texts and consider how God continues to speak to us through the scriptures today? These conversations (found at palmaceia.org) are recorded and made available for study at your own schedule.

We then disperse into four different classrooms by age: PreK3/4, Kindergarten/1st Grade, 2nd/3rd Grade, 4th/5th Grade.

Q: What does the theme At The Table mean?
A: The foundational passage to help shape us throughout the year comes from the Gospel of Luke 24:30-31. After Jesus accompanied friends on the road to Emmaus, “when Jesus was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.”
At the Table: All are welcome
At the Table: All are loved
At the Table: All are fed
At the Table: All can learn
At the Table: All can serve

A General Description of Faith & Fellowship Hour: During Faith & Fellowship Hour on most Sundays from 10-10:50am, children ages PreK3-Grade 5 learn with a team of caring and faithful adults and youth. Each week we explore Bible stories through science experiments, art, video storytelling, and active games. We follow the lectionary passages linked to that day’s worship services. All ages gather in the Chapel starting at 10am with music, a Bible reading, then disperse into age group gatherings in designated locations.

By tying the stories to the lectionary passages illuminated in the worship services, we seek to experience each story more fully in different environments across the morning not only during Faith & Fellowship Hour & Worship Services, but also in Godly Play, Worship Bag content, the Prayground in the Connection, and Faith & Fellowship Hour.

Godly Play
Orientation - Sept 8th during each morning service

Godly Play on Sunday mornings is a way of sharing bible stories designed from a Montessori-based storytelling model for children ages Pre-K3 through 1st grade. (2nd graders are welcome to attend until the conclusion of Welcome to Worship Class on Oct. 6, 2024.)
Unless they are in the nursery, all children begin worship with their families in the primary worship space on Sunday mornings. Following the children’s message, they are welcome to either remain in the service or continue worship with their peer group in Godly Play (Covenant Hall Room 101). Parent/Guardians are asked to check in their children at any of our four check-in stations. Godly Play is led by trained staff and screened volunteers.
An orientation to become reacquainted with Godly Play or for those experiencing it for the first time will be held on Sept. 8th during the second half of all worship services (8:30, 9:00 and 11:00 am). A parent or grandparent is asked to attend Godly Play with their child for this orientation.
Welcome to Worship for 2nd Graders & Parent(s) Sundays, Sept. 15, 22, 29 from 12:15-2, and helping with communion during worship services Oct. 6.

In Welcome to Worship, 2nd graders transition out of Godly Play and are welcomed into full worship participation with the community of believers. Second graders and a parent/guardian are invited to this special opportunity. We will investigate and explore the who, where, and why’s of worship within the Presbyterian tradition in addition to Tasting the Bread when learning about the Sacrament of Communion. Children will help lead the communion liturgy on World Communion Sunday, October 6. Led by Allison Kelly, Anna Shuford, pastors, and friends.
Children & Family Ministries
Third Grade Bible Presentation and Education for Children and Adults
Sunday, October 27 during worship and 12:15-2:30 During all worship services Sunday, Oct. 27, third graders will be presented with a Bible. Following the services, from 12:15-2:30, third graders will have a special Bible Blitz class led by Allison Kelly, Anna Shuford, and friends. Fourth graders who missed it last year are also invited. Rev. John Reiter will teach Bible Blitz at the same time with parents and adults interested in learning the basics of the Bible.

Service Hour Sundays

We have our first Service Hour Sunday of the season scheduled for Sunday, September 1 at 10am. It is, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future, on the second floor of the Westminster wing in WM202/204. We plan to offer four more Service Hour Sundays during this school year that benefit various local and global ministries such as End 68 Hours of Hunger, Faith Cafe, Rise Against Hunger (this event is in Fellowship Hall Dec. 15), plus we’ll create care packages to seasoned seniors in our congregation and our college-aged community. Children & Families put these Service Hour Sundays together, but any individual is welcome to come join us. PCPC Youth typically join in with Service Hour Sundays. If you wish to help occasionally, there is still room for you to join our teaching teams. Contact Allison Kelly: allison@palmaceia.org.
Back to School Prayer
God our teacher, who helps us to understand the world around us, thank you for the privilege of education. You have blessed our communities with teachers who take new skills and concepts and pass them along to each new class of young people.
God who came as a child to show us how to be fully human, how to be rooted and grounded in love, You have given our children minds that grow and develop in unique ways, at unique speeds, and we are astounded by that miracle.
We celebrate the beginning of this school year and ask for your blessings upon the children, the educators, and the families who support them all.
But we do not forget there are children, families, and teachers who do not have the resources they need. Today we remember those who have what they need, and those who lack supplies, teachers, safe buildings, and accommodations for all needs and abilities.
We lift up our young people and all those who care for them and teach them. Open our hearts to what you are saying to us today. Amen.
-Adapted from Illustrated Ministry
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power; Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
- Ephesians 6:10-11
Youth at PCPC

28 students, 6 leaders, 3 cooks, 7 days, and 1,000 miles later, the High School Youth of PCPC are back safely from a wonderful trip to Blue Ridge, Georgia. On this beloved annual trip, they stay in cabins, eat home-cooked meals, and study a book together, all while offering a space to talk about their faith within God’s creation and as a part of the larger community. Plus, there are adventures like whitewater rafting and waterfall-exploring sprinkled in. Thank you all for your prayers that helped make this an enriching week of growing closer to God and strengthening faith through fellowship within God’s creation.

Over 50 PCPC Youth served Tampa Bay in our annual “Disciple Now” middle school service week. This faithformative and full-of-fellowship week for young people was a reminder of how impactful service can be, and that it can be done right in our own backyard.
50 youth served at:
• Homeless Empowerment Program
• Hudson Manor
• Coffee Uniting People (C.U.P.)
• Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center
• Feeding Tampa Bay
And they got to end the week with a pizza & movie night! Thanks to all the youth’s hard work, and the leaders, too!

Some of the High School Youth of PCPC had a new experience this summer that they called a “Mid-Summer Refresher.”
• Day 1 was a monastic day at St. Leo’s Abbey where they did a noon prayer, noon mass, an evening prayer, and spiritual contemplation. It was nurturing and they experienced a stillness that they got to bring into the rest of the week.
• Day 2, they served at Beth-El and bagged thousands of pounds of beans and rice for the hundreds of families that come through each week.
• Day 3 was spent kayaking and exploring the Weeki Wachee preserve, buying silly t-shirts at a thrift store, and having dinner at Village Inn.
Out of this time spent “refreshing,” the youth remind us to slow down a bit and spend intentional time with those around you.
36 middle school students and 7 leaders went to Southwind, a Young Life Camp, with PCPC the third week of July. Southwind is a Young Life Camp at the edge of Ocala National Forest. With its two pools, waterslide, mountain biking course, lake activities, game room, Wiffle Ball field, frisbee golf course, and many other attractions, there’s no better place to spend a week of summer! Students enjoyed all these things while they got to hear from amazing camp speakers and participate in worship. Students connected with God and with each other during an incredible week. “Can’t we all just live here together forever?”- Each student after Southwind

A VBS RECAP!
CAMP FIRELIGHT was the theme of this year’s VBS at PCPC, and these pictures can’t even begin to capture the joy campers experienced and the power of the Spirit that moved through PCPC in early June. Campers learned to trust that God will go with us, lead the way, share wisdom, and spark JOY! as we celebrate the good news of Jesus in our own lives and in the lives of others.

MusiCamp
This year’s MusiCamp production on June 2 was “100% Chance of Rain: The story of Noah and the Flood,” directed and produced by Nancy Callahan with Assistant Director Ashley Greenfield and dedicated volunteers. What an incredible job all the participants did learning how to tell this story through song and dance—in less than a week!

From July 29-August 2, Cedarkirk took a school bus-load of children from Palma Ceia Presbyterian to Cedarkirk and back daily for day camp. Sighs of relief and a chorus of “thank you’s!” from relieved parents as summer stretches on could be heard around the neighborhood daily.

He called the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” -Mark 8:34
