England Team. Sixsmith became captain of his Holy Cross team. Nic Pierog ’11 went on to play on the Clarkson University varsity team. In 2014, under coach Paddy McCarthy ’94, the team went to the New England Small School Tournament and lost in the quarter finals, but Christian Short ’14 went on to be the First Team goalie at the Western New England All-Star game. Shane Sellar ’14 of that team is playing on the Dartmouth varsity squad. Girls’ Hockey Giving up coaching the boys’ team did not mean Charlie Huntington gave up hockey. He then assisted coach Cindy Martin with the fledgling girls’ hockey team which began as a club team in 1991 and became a varsity team in 1993. Although the girls’ teams had several notable players such as goalie Heather Williams ’97, Stacy Burns ’99, and Lyndsey Bennett ’00 in their early years as a varsity team, they did not have a winning season until 2003 when they earned a 12-9-2 record with coach Suzanne Chepren (later Roberts). That year they won the Princeton Day Tournament for the first of three consecutive years. In 2004, the team bettered their 2003 record with a record of 1770

7-1. Coach Chepren was the 2004 Vincent J. Reilly Coach of the Year. The girls’ hockey program benefitted from the successful recruiting of coach John Ettore from 2008–2010. Between 2010 and 2016, the team went to the New England Tournament four times. In 2010, their first appearance ever in the Tournament, the team was the #5 seed; they lost in the quarter finals. In 2011, they lost in the semi- finals. Ellie Haines ’13, Leigh Getz ’11, and Sara Sokol ’11 were named to the All New England team. In 2015, the team went to the Tournament as the #6 seed under coach Peter LaVigne. As Canterbury’s second century began in the winter of 2016, the team was the #5 seed, and Maddie Blauth ’16 and Maura White ’16 were named New England All-Stars. Boys’ Basketball While beginning this quarter century with a winning record in 1991, not until 1997 did Canterbury’s boys’ basketball again have a winning team. Sprinkled throughout the next fifteen years were: the successful teams of 2000 when they went to the Class B New England Tournament, and Dan Murphy ’00 was named to the All New England First Team

and the Player of the Year in the Conference; the 2002 team with Guy Smith ’02 who finished his career with 1,485 points and Keshaun Horne ’02 who was named to the All Tri-State Team; the 2006 and 2007 teams featuring Jeremy Shannon ’06 of the Tri-State First Team and Matt Chisick ’07 First Team All-League. In 2011, coach Don Gowan took his team to the Class B New England Tournament where they lost to the #1 seed Suffield. The following year, they again went to the Tournament. Tragically, Coach Gowan died unexpectedly that spring. The Don K. Gowan III Basketball Award was established in his name. Basketball ended the 2014-15 year spectacularly as New England Class B Champions under coach Keith Rado. The team won twenty-two games in the 2015 season. Team member Temar Robinson Hermelijn ’15 was named First Team AllDivision; Brandon Aughburns ’15 was named Third Team AllDivision and went on to play at Hampton College. Girls’ Basketball Girls’ basketball also started the quarter century auspiciously by winning the New England Small Schools Tournament in 1991 under coach Jim Pettyjohn. Team member Patricia Sordoni ’92 was chosen the WNEGPSAA Most Valuable Player and voted the MVP of the Tournament. She broke four Canterbury basketball records that season. The girls again went to the New England Tournament in 1996 under coach Alec Braley. Although the team’s record for 2001 was 10-10, captain Lauren Michael ’01 ended her season with 1,103 career points, the first Canterbury girl to attain the 1,000-point mark. In 2007, the girls began a seven-year winning streak under coach Sarah Ferland, and in 2009, they were Class C New England Champions. Outstanding players during these years included Clare Fitzpatrick ’09 who finished her career with 1,521 points, the most scored in the school history, male or female. Clare went on to play basketball at
