Inspir ation and Aspir ation A Message from the Head of School

Beginning in the summer of 2021 and continuing in earnest over the 18 months that followed, the Canterbury community engaged in extensive conversations about our strengths and challenges, exploring new opportunities and initiatives to advance the School’s mission. Last fall, that community-wide examination reached an exciting milestone when the Board of Trustees approved the Canterbury School Strategic Plan 2023–2028—People, Purpose, Program, Permanence.

It has become tradition for our full faculty and staff to gather in August—a few days before our students’ energy, enthusiasm, and joyful noise return to campus—to officially mark the start of a new school year. Typically, as we come together as colleagues and friends, my opening remarks center on an interesting summer read or contemplate a personal life experience. This year, however, we used our time together for a collective reflection, inviting reactions to the question: “What defines and distinguishes Canterbury School?”

Without surprise, this lively exchange echoed responses heard time and again throughout our strategic planning sessions and across all of our key constituency groups: Community. Culture. Ethos. We know our students well.

A team of adults in your corner.

Broad and deep curriculum. Tradition and innovation.

Warm. Welcoming. Belonging.

An interfaith community with a Catholic heritage.

To be sure, one of the capstone experiences of our planning process was a time of intensive self-reflection. While it may seem

paradoxical, the powerful and important work of looking forward was fueled by the clarity and conviction we gained by looking back. Recognizing the contributions of those who live, learn, and work on our hilltop elevated their priority in our plan.

Affirming our mission and values deepened our commitment to inspiring meaningful purpose in students’ lives. Revisiting the strength and success of our program led to revelations about critical opportunities before us. And celebrating our unprecedented momentum gave us the confidence to create a bold set of new aspirations.

In this issue of PALLIUM, I am proud to present our ambitious vision for Canterbury’s future—a vision anchored in People, Purpose, Program, and Permanence. More than a five-year plan, this strategic document provides an intentional way to focus our priorities while giving us the flexibility to evolve, improve, and do the things we do well even better. It does not redefine who we are but instead empowers us to embrace the very best of our School.

Strategic Plan 2023-2028 The story of Canterbury School is one of a values-driven, student-centered community whose springboard into its second century has been marked by extraordinary

momentum. Our academic program prioritizes intellectual rigor and innovative mindsets and has led generations of

students to their greatest individual outcomes. Moreover, the differentiating role of our Catholic heritage as the foundation of a service-minded interfaith community

continues to fortify a commitment to moral leadership and fuel a mission that remains relevant and resonant.

Yet, even as we are bolstered by this momentum and

affirm the foundational commitments that continue to

define and drive our program, we acknowledge continued

challenges. How do we retain the core values that brought us with strength to this time while also ensuring our

ability to thrive in the 21st century? How do we go beyond preparing students for college and ready them for a world

Strategic Plan Makes Public Debut in NYC

Following a purposeful, comprehensive 18-month process, Canterbury’s new Strategic Plan was introduced off the hilltop for the first time in late January 2023, as Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24 unveiled details of the plan to alumni, parents, school leaders, education consultants, and friends in New York City.

Members of the Board of Trustees were also in attendance at the breakfast session, which served as the kickoff to their annual winter meeting.

The event marked the first in a series of preview presentations to be held around the country, with stops in Washington, DC; Naples, FL; and others.

The plan was previously rolled out on campus and met with much affirmation and excitement by faculty, staff, and student focus groups.

that will push them in ways we cannot yet imagine? How do we go beyond teaching young people the importance of values and empower them to live and lead with those

values for the betterment of others? This is the calling before Canterbury School.

The strategic plan that follows not only declares a path to fulfill that calling but reflects our bold assertion that

Canterbury is the best small boarding school, a leader and model for how students can—and should—be mentored

intellectually, spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically

in their journey from adolescence to adulthood. Our plan is exciting and aspirational, worthy of our past, vital for our

future. And to be sure, its success relies on what we all share: an unrelenting commitment to providing the transformative high school experience that current and future Canterbury students need and deserve.

Trustee Nick Ragland ’88, P ’21 opened the session and spoke of the impetus behind the Strategic Plan. “The last seven years have provided tremendous growth for Canterbury. The success we have achieved has allowed us to think broadly and, more importantly, boldly about our future,” he said. Nick issued a call to action to all in the room: “Get invested in the Strategic Plan… in all that is Canterbury. Tell your family, tell your friends; talk to fellow alumni, to fellow parents.

Collectively we will ensure that Canterbury has even better days ahead.”

He then introduced Rachel, who walked guests through the new strategic roadmap and led a discussion. “Canterbury’s extraordinary foundation and the momentum we have experienced led to a series of forward-thinking questions and conversations about strategic planning,” she told them. “All of that—all that makes Canterbury Canterbury— is what both grounded and inspired us to set the School’s priorities moving forward.

This is exciting and such a pivotal time for our great school.”

Our Process

Our plan is the synthesis of an

18-month community conversation

and strategic visioning process that includes the voices of a diverse

set of Canterbury stakeholders.

The planning solicited input from students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and

trustees through focus groups,

surveys, listening sessions, working committee meetings, and highly generative discussions about what makes Canterbury

Canterbury. Together, we carefully examined the School’s strengths and challenges, explored

opportunities and ideas to advance the School’s mission, and created a framework for forward-looking,

program-strengthening initiatives.

Our Plan

To put it simply, there is nothing more critical to Canterbury’s success than the people learning, living, and working on our hilltop. Every member of our community animates our mission and inspires and preserves our School culture. Our students develop in impressive and transformational ways as young adults.

And our faculty and staff mentor these very teenagers as teachers, advisors, coaches, dorm parents, and community members.

STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE Attract, retain, and generously support a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff of exceptional character, caliber, and mission alignment.

• Endow scholarship programs to attract an extraordinary community of learners and ensure equitable access to the Canterbury experience.

• Enhance compensation and benefits structures that effectively attract, affirm, and retain talented employees who sustain Canterbury’s culture and mission.

• Create a Teaching Commons—physical space, technology, and resources dedicated to faculty professional development—that will foster collaboration and mentoring and support the continuous application of innovative approaches in pedagogy and the curriculum.

• Endow graduate school funding for early-career teachers to promote their commitment to and success in boarding school education.

• Build and/or renovate faculty and student housing to enhance our residential community.

Purpose

Grounded by values and a deep sense of purpose, our students develop an understanding of the role they play in the lives of others. To that end, never in the history of our School has it been more important and impactful for the Canterbury community to lean in with even greater conviction to our mission. Therefore, we must continue to embrace our responsibility to enroll and graduate students who are not only prepared academically and socially but who are also prepared and inspired to be “moral leaders in a complex, secular world.”

STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE Amplify our commitment to providing students with experiences that foster ethical citizenship, servant leadership, global awareness, and social responsibility.

Opportunities

• Endow the programming of the D’Amour Center for Faith, Service & Justice generally and the Social Justice Series specifically.

• Fund opportunities for all students to participate in service immersion programs as an integral part of their Canterbury education.

• Develop a certificate program to guide and distinguish a course of study for students in ethics, service, and justice.

• Implement an institutional-wide DEIJ roadmap to guide and hold our community accountable for building and sustaining a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and just school culture.

• Deepen our commitment to sustainability and environmentally conscious practices while further incorporating this critical global issue throughout our program.

Program

An infrastructure of robust academic curricula, excellent athletic and artistic opportunities, and programming to support our students’ emotional well-being is essential to propelling our graduates on journeys that lead far beyond strong college preparation and placement to lives of great intellect, passion, and purpose.

Opportunities

STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE Assure the most comprehensive boarding school experience that leads to transformative learning and the best individual outcome for each student, prioritizing academic excellence, well-being, and outstanding co-curricular programs.

• Centralize academic and college counseling programming/spaces into an Academic Hub to strengthen student success through increased access, communication, collaboration, and support.

• Expand the Health & Wellness Center facility and resources, as well as wellness education programming, to ensure our ability to care for the physical and socio-emotional well-being of our students.

• Grow the academic course of study in areas that provide meaningful real-world connections, such as entrepreneurship and financial literacy, innovation and design, digital citizenship, and the Life Worth Living program.

• Upgrade our academic spaces to reflect the excellence of our teaching and learning, particularly in Old School House and Hume Hall.

• Upgrade our athletic facilities to support and develop our student-athletes by renovating the Athletic Center and Pigott Arena.

Permanence

The work before us to secure Canterbury’s financial infrastructure is not only critical to safeguarding our School’s future but necessary to sustain our present Saints community. There is no strategic imperative more crucial to the long-term success of Canterbury. While the concept of permanence may be aspirational, this Strategic Plan—and the leadership of our School—will be guided by and held accountable to this core principle.

Conclusion

Firmly rooted in our conviction that we are the best small boarding school, this plan seeks to

elevate and strengthen the

A Note About Our Imperatives and Opportunities

Our strategic plan provides general direction for Canterbury for the

upcoming years and intentionally allows for flexibility in terms of how

and when to act. As we progress, we acknowledge that the opportunities before us will evolve and change. The School and Board of Trustees recognize that securing the necessary resources will also shape the implementation and timing of the plan.

SOCIETY OF ALUMNI

50TH REUNION,

T

he Big Five-oh! That’s what members of the Class of 1972 were celebrating as they came together on campus in the fall during Homecoming for their landmark 50th Reunion. There was so much laughter and camaraderie; it was as if they had never been away!

The full agenda for this special class kicked off with Friday night dinner at Lucia Ristorante in downtown New Milford. At a Roast & Toast event Saturday morning, they celebrated the School’s first Girls’ Soccer team and guest speakers remembered the ’72 Boys’ Soccer and Football teams in the Steers Center, whose members in attendance later posed for photos on the field with student-athletes from the current teams.

Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24 presented a State of the School address to guests, who also heard from a lively student panel and had a chance to cheer on our Saints teams throughout the two days.

For one of the Class Ambassadors, Charles “Chip” Berman ’72, the joy of being together again was priceless. “The campus… the weather…the magic of celebrating the fun and frivolity of friendships past gave classmates a fantastic experience through the re-telling of stories often repeated over the years,” he said.

The weekend culminated with cocktails and a private dinner for the Class of ’72 in the David C. Copley ’70 Library, followed by Steers Center Unplugged, an alumni concert.

ROAST & TOAST, AND UNPLUGGED CONNECT ALUMNI

The Unplugged show featured an impressive compilation of musical talent from our 1970s-era graduates, including Chip, Peter Bresnan ’73, Michael Conniff ’72, Robert Corroon ’77, Samuel FitzGerald ’72, Gilbert “Gib” Geiger ’77, Paul Gelinas ’72, William Haxo ’76, David Karlen ’76, Elaine Mullen Peer ’77, John Ringstad ’75, Peter Shonk ’72, and Daniel Whalen ’72. They were joined by former faculty member J.P. Mandler P ’87, ’91, ’94, ’99.

Performing together was an absolute joy for Samuel and his fellow alumni. “On behalf of all the musicians, we had a blast! We loved playing for Canterbury,” Samuel said.

Reunion members enjoyed catching up not only with friends but with their alma mater. “All of my classmates thought the school looked great, and the presentation by Rachel was fantastic,” said Michael Seaman ’72. “Our 50th class dinner was also wonderful. We have all talked about coming back to the School for the next Homecoming.”

Chip was in full agreement. “The interaction with student leaders, the competitions on the fields, the vision of Canterbury’s future became more than a gathering of individuals; it was a festival of great music, friendship, and shared experience,” he said. “Congratulations to all. What a weekend!”

Saints Graduate Recognized for Her Spirit and Inspiration

I

t did not take long for Jennifer Castro ’22 to have as big an impact on her college as she did at Canterbury. A marketing major at Boston College, Jen was named the 2022 BC Strong Scholarship recipient, an annual award that celebrates a student with a permanent physical disability who has overcome adversity.

Jen is the sixth recipient of the scholarship established by a group of 2005 Boston College graduates to honor their friend and classmate, Patrick Downes, and his wife Jessica Kensky, who were seriously wounded in the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013. Members of her new Boston College family are quickly discovering what we already knew—Jen Castro is an extraordinary person.

“Jen’s infectious spirit, resiliency in the face of obstacles, and

determination to care for others breathe fresh inspiration into the mission of the BC Strong Scholarship,” Patrick said. “When you are in her presence, you just know she is special and will leave a lasting imprint on any community she is a part of.”

She already has. Although Jen was born without a left arm below the elbow, she has not let that stop her from doing great things in the classroom and beyond. At Canterbury, she played varsity basketball and lacrosse and was

a member of the School’s Honor Society. Jen credits the hilltop with providing a supportive environment that has greatly aided her transition to BC in a number of important ways.

“Canterbury prepared me well socially. It is a very warm community; you are expected to walk around campus without AirPods in your ears so you can say hi to everybody,” she said.

“That has made it easier for me to meet people here at BC. The hilltop helped me with time

management as well. Canterbury has such a packed day, and it was great having that structure before coming here. Also, I benefited from taking rigorous AP courses.

If I had any advice for students, it would be to take those optional

One thing Jen has stayed on top of is being a mentor for younger children who face some of the same challenges she did growing up. She has been active in both Wounded Warriors and the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

“When I was 11, I attended the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team camp,” she shared.

“It is run by veterans who all led normal lives before being wounded at war. They show young people that life without a limb is limitless, and you can do whatever you want despite any differences you have. My mindset switched after that. So many people are willing to help me, so why shouldn’t I help other people?”

That mindset led Jen—who has used a prosthetic since she was six months old and did not learn how to tie her shoes until she was 12— to continue her involvement with Wounded Warriors. She traveled with the softball team for games and joined them for hospital visits

as far away as South Carolina.

“We went to many different hospitals and hung out with kids who had just been through surgery due to cancer or an accident or something like that,” she recalled. “We would tell them, ‘Look at us; it’s going to be okay. We are still having a great life.’”

Jen has also done some traveling for Challenged Athletes, a foundation benefiting athletes looking for help with prosthetics. “They granted me my first softball prosthetic in 2017,” she said.

“In 2019—my first year at Canterbury—I flew out to California for their triathlon event in which many amputees participate. Meeting young kids there was awesome. You pair up with a younger child who has a disability and run a 5K with them. There are so many cool people who are looking to help.”

Jen is certainly one of those “cool people”—and we could not be prouder that she is a Saint.

From the Hilltop to the Mountaintop

SOCIETY OF ALUMNI

H

ow does one become a record-breaking competitor who Outside magazine said “may be one of the most gifted runners on the planet”? When that person is Robert “Jack” Kuenzle ’13, you can be sure of one thing—he did not take the easy route.

This past fall, Jack set a new speed record on a mountain route widely renowned for its degree of difficulty—the Bob Graham Round in the United Kingdom’s Lake District. He did not just break the previous mark; he shaved nearly half an hour off it, finishing the grueling 66-mile loop in 12 hours, 23 minutes, and 48 seconds. On a course with 27,000 feet of elevation gain, that is no small accomplishment.

But it is just another day at the office for this gutsy, thrill-seeking exNavy SEAL who not only runs up, down, and across challenging courses but skis in some pretty treacherous conditions. “I am drawn to adventure and risk-taking. It is a very holistic kind of test; physical in many different ways with the running and skiing,” he said. “I was training in the Navy and running a lot in college. I was also traveling overseas. So after I left the Navy, this is what I wanted to do.”

Early Influences

Following in the footsteps of his father, John “Jay” Kuenzle ’75, Jack enrolled at Canterbury, where he swam, played water polo and baseball, was on the track and field team, and ran cross country. He particularly recalls his Cross Country Coach at the time, Tracy Garcia-LaVigne P ʼ14, ʼ16, ʼ17, ʼ20, ʼ23 (currently still the Girls’ Cross Country Coach and Director of the D’Amour Center for Faith, Service, & Justice), telling him to use the correct form while running. “I would always run with my arms cross-body and kind of compress my chest. I can very distinctly remember her urging me to run with my arms at my side when we were doing things like hill repeats,” he shared. “Today, when I am running, she still enters my mind telling me to run with my arms at my sides!”

He remains ever-grateful for his time on the hilltop: “I am absolutely certain Canterbury steered me in a great direction.”

That direction started when he attended Yale, graduated with a degree in Middle Eastern Studies, and then joined the Navy. The first 14-plus months of his service was spent doing SEAL training in San Diego, and while it was rough going, the experience proved to be ideal preparation for what was to come for him. “At the beginning, you’re rolling around in the sand and in the water; it is not very pleasant,” he said. “Then, by the end, you are doing a lot of diving, skydiving, shooting, demolition, and mountain activities in Alaska.”

He served out the rest of his five-year Navy stint in Virginia Beach and came out of it ready to start his next adventure. “The SEAL training prepared me for the next part of my life in surprising ways,” Jack explained. “Most people think SEALs are really tough, and that is valid, but I found that my job as an officer was basically planning and coordinating. In the field, we prided ourselves on being creative and thinking outside the box. That has allowed me to approach my races in unique, unconventional ways. Some of it is higher risk, the skiing races especially. The Navy absolutely helped with that—being able to compartmentalize risk, assess danger, and make decisions.”

Dedication and Challenges

While his proudest achievement to date is “The Bob,” Jack insists there have been many other competitions that have been just as challenging, if not more so. “Mount Hood on skis is something I am quite proud of because the level of risk is higher there,” he shared. “Plus, I did not grow up as an amazing skier or have a lot of mountaineering experience. So that event was something novel for me that I wouldn’t have thought possible years ago.”

So why did he add skiing to the mix? “It is traditional in endurance sports to run in the summer and then, in the winter, compete in ski

mountaineering. To be good at trail running and ultra running, you have to accumulate an enormous amount of volume. It is very challenging to achieve that volume by only running during the year,” he explained.

“You could get injured or burned out. So uphill skiing is very similar to hiking and running uphill, and then the downhill is not only fun, it’s low-impact. It also happens that I love to be out in the mountains, especially in the winter.”

Jack’s dedication to his sport is unequaled. He spent an entire winter sleeping in his van at high altitudes to prepare for his record-breaking attempts on Mount Hood in Oregon and Mount Shasta in California. “A lot of records I chase are on mountains at altitude, so to get that extra edge, I have to live at altitude for a long time,” he said. “I often map out my schedule and where I’m living based on how high I can sleep. That makes it hard to do a lot of ‘normal’ things because there are just not many places in the U.S. that are above 8,500 feet!”

Right Where He Wants to Be

When he is not chasing records, Jack does some writing and works for Evoke Endurance, a company that inspires, educates, and empowers mountain athletes to achieve their goals. “I primarily do individualized remote coaching for people training in the military, for mountaineering, and for ultra running,” he said.

At the end of the day, the life of an adventuring mountaineer has suited Jack just fine. “To me, far and away, the most important thing is going out and learning about yourself,” he shared. “You are doing battle inside your mind, whether it is from the pain of running so hard or the fear of being so steep that if you fell, you could be killed. That is what it comes down to—finding different environments where I can test my mind. The body is the arena, but it is really just a mental thing. It feels pretty good to be living this life. I’m much more fulfilled now.”

Perseverance Pays Off for This Navy Officer

S

ervice to others is a value instilled in every Canterbury student from the moment they set foot on campus, and Lieutenant Commander Kimberly (Muirhead) Lujan ’09 has certainly taken that to heart—she is serving her country. As she was preparing to travel to Muscat, Oman, in the fall with her family to become the Naval Liaison Officer for the United States Embassy there, Kim took the time to come to campus and speak to students as a “Saint Off the Hill.”

Standing at the front of Maguire Auditorium in her crisp white uniform, Kim shared how her accomplishments as a United States Naval Academy graduate and Navy Officer did not always come easy for her. It required a lot of dedication, perseverance, and even some failure. “You have to expect that, somewhere along the way, you are going to fail,” she said. “I have failed multiple times. The most important thing about failure is to be able to take

it as a lesson and an opportunity. How do you come back from it? Take a look at yourself and then try again from a different angle. I did that many times—and it worked.”

Did it ever. Kim earned a B.S. in International Relations and Affairs from the Naval Academy in 2013; has spent nine-plus years in the Navy, most recently as a Foreign Area Officer; received two Navy Achievement Medals; learned two languages, Farsi and Dari; and served as an instructor for a Basic Division Officer Course.

She credits much of her success to the values and lessons she learned at Canterbury, where she was on the varsity soccer, swim, and tennis teams all four years; was involved in the theater program; and served as Spirit Club president and Student Council member.

“The Naval Academy was hard work, but I feel like I thrived,” she recalled. “The structure I had at Canterbury—the study hall, time-managing rigorous classes and sports, having a social life, the different clubs—all helped carry me through.”

Kim shared that her time at Canterbury once again came into play during deployments as an officer on the USS Boxer LHD4 ship and the USS Kidd destroyer. “Living on a ship can be challenging. You are with the same people for six to nine months,” she said. “Doesn’t that sound similar to living here at Canterbury?

One of the biggest things I learned while being on campus here is how you manage those different personalities—and your own personality.”

Perseverance has been crucial for Kim in achieving what she has in the Navy, especially since, as she explained, things did not always come as easily to her as others.

“I am a slow learner, but when I get it, I get it good, and I am able to pass and succeed,” she said. “One of the lessons to remember as you are going through school is that it is okay if you are struggling. Please ask for help, be honest with yourself, and know that everybody has a different learning style and speed. Do not shy away from the extra help that teachers are offering.”

With her deployment experience and fluency in the Farsi and Dari languages, Kim was ready for her next adventure with her husband Preston and daughter Lucy at the U.S. Embassy in Oman. “As the Naval Liaison Officer, I have an opportunity to help shape, define, and create something for the Navy in my own niche area, so I am very excited about that,” she said.

And Kim was effusive in expressing gratitude to her alma mater. “Pay attention to the skills, the relationships, and the community you are building while you are at Canterbury,” she told the captivated audience. “I can say from experience that what I learned here, I have carried with me through literally everything. I am here today because of Canterbury.”

B

ack by popular demand, Canterbury hosted a virtual Peloton ride for alumni this past Thanksgiving. The event gave our graduates the chance to connect via the hashtag #ridewithcanterbury for some exercise and fun—with a little friendly competition thrown in—on the morning of the holiday.

The 45-minute “Turkey Burn Ride” with Peloton instructor Robin Arzon challenged participants to achieve their best output according to their personal cadence and resistance settings. A running leaderboard display kept track of each rider’s progress, with the top three alumni at the end each receiving Canterbury swag. Dylan Ade ’91 took the top spot, with Bill DiTullio ’98 and Chad Glennon ’90 also earning swag.

Bill loved the opportunity to pedal along with friends and classmates. “Not only was the Peloton ride on Thanksgiving a perfect way to start the day, but it was also awesome to connect with alumni of Canterbury and engage in some friendly competition among Saints,” he said.

Hope High School in Bristol, a Substitute Teacher in the Bristol/Warren School District, and a Special Education Aid at John Trumbull Primary School in Watertown, Connecticut. A three-year member of Roger Williams’ Varsity Tennis team, Libby is coaching Girls’ Varsity Tennis and Girls’ JV Soccer at Canterbury. She is living in Duffy House on campus.

A graduate of Elmira College with a B.A. in Psychology, Eliza served as an Academic Fellow in Elmira’s Psychology Department.

She was also a Senior Proctor at Hebron Academy in Maine and a Junior Counselor at Rousseau’s Hockey Clinic in Auburn, Maine.

A four-year member (and two-year captain) of Elmira’s nationally ranked Women’s Ice Hockey team, Eliza earned 2022 New England Hockey Conference Player of the Year honors. She assists with the Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey, Girls’ Varsity Soccer, and Softball programs on campus, where she lives in Carter House.

Mark brought extensive experience in teaching Latin to Canterbury, including faculty positions at Council Rock High School North in Newtown, Pennsylvania; the University of California’s Department of Classics; The Altamont School in Birmingham, Alabama; and several schools in New Jersey.

In addition to his classroom duties, Mark is Head Coach of our Swimming program. As a swimmer at Hill, he was nationally ranked by Swimming World magazine, and he twice earned All-American honors in the pool at the University of Maryland.

Anne spent nearly 20 years as an English Language Arts teacher in Connecticut, serving on the faculty of Brookfield High School, St. Aloysius School in New Canaan, Ponus Ridge Middle School in Norwalk, and Middlesex Middle School in Darien. She holds a B.A. in English from Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts, and an M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum from Boston University. She was also Lead Literacy Teacher for The Teachers College Reading and Writing Program with Columbia University. She is assisting the Track team as well on the hilltop.

Canterbury alumnus Fran isn’t exactly a “new” faculty member (see article on page 26). He has returned to campus for his second tenure, having previously spent 20 years at the School as Director of Admission, Dean of Students, Math Teacher, Coach, and Advisor. He was most recently Chief Executive Officer for Avila Retirement Community in Albany, New York, and was Head of School for Saint Gregory’s School in Albany for 10 years. Four of his children—Megan ’91, Francis III ’93, Sarah ’95, and Caroline ’99—are also alumni of the School, along with brother Kevin ’65 and niece Libby ’06.

Caitlin grew up in New Milford, so her arrival at Canterbury was a homecoming of sorts. She comes from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she was an Athletic Trainer (Women’s Volleyball and Softball teams) in their Transition to Practice Program. She earned a B.S. in Exercise Science and M.S. in Athletic Training from Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. She also has a Board of Certification credential as an athletic trainer and is a member of the National Athletic Training Association.

Caitlin lives on campus in Sheehan House.

At The Albany Academy in Watervliet, New York, Brian served as Dean of Students, Learning Counselor, Director of Summer Camp, and Development Associate. During his tenure as Head Basketball Coach there, he compiled an overall record of 226-79 in 15 seasons.

Brian was also an Assistant Coach for the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association and for NCAA Division I program Siena College, as well as Head Basketball Coach at La Salle Institute and Southern Vermont College. Alice is a veteran STEM educator with nearly 25 years of experience teaching math and science at the middle school, high school, and higher education level. Her research has been published in refereed scientific journals and she has presented at national conferences. She has lived in seven countries and, as a volunteer teacher in the Peace Corps, taught math and science to students in the Fiji Islands of the South Pacific. Most recently, Alice taught at the Fusion Academy in Fairfield, Connecticut. She currently is an Educator Ambassador for the NASA Climate Change Research Initiative and a certified SAT and ACT instructor. Alice teaches AP Physics at Canterbury.

Hailing from Mexico City, Mexico, Miranda attended the Modern American School in Mexico City. At just 17, she trained as a volunteer rural teacher in San José Corral Blanco, Puebla, Mexico. She earned her B.A. in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Miranda has worked as a staff writer for F Newsmagazine at SAIC and a freelance copywriter for FCB México. Prior to joining Canterbury, she served as a Teaching Fellow for Phillips Academy Andover. She speaks four languages—Spanish, English, French, and German.

He was Senior Instructor at Axiom Learning in Boston, Massachusetts; Teaching Assistant at Carnegie Mellon; and Instructor for Mathematical Logic at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Most recently, Adam worked with the Russian School of Math in Bellevue, Washington. He is also serving as an Assistant Coach for the Saints Crew team. Adam is living in Sheehan House on campus.

Seminar Helps All Students Navigate the Research Minefield

W

hat can you trust on the internet? How are websites and databases different? What are best practices for research? All that and more was covered in the “Research at Canterbury School” session presented

by Ryan Rebstock, Director of Library Services and Archives.

The session is part of New Student Seminar, so every student who starts at Canterbury will go through this vital learning. In addition, upperform students can come to Ryan as needed for related support with their coursework.

“It is a touchpoint for Ryan to get every new student coming in so our whole school goes through a formal digital literacy program,” said Director of Curriculum Kelli Darrin P ’26. “In addition, there are classes whose teachers come to him for assistance, whether it is for a specific project or topic or to put together library databases they can use. We want Ryan to be a known resource on campus for teachers and students; someone they can go to for information, for help navigating the internet, and more.”

“It was so beneficial to learn about the vast amount of knowledge and resources we have access to,” said Greyson Mengold ’26 following one of the sessions. “Mr. Rebstock used practical examples and demonstrated things like citing quotations and finding relevant sources. I also liked how he encouraged us to reach out to him if we have any questions.”

Discovering the Educational Wonders of the Galápagos

H

iking…snorkeling… exploring…getting up close with gentle giants… and especially learning…Cammy and Rob Roffe P ’12, ’15 did it all when they visited the Galápagos Islands during a trip in August as recipients of the annual John P. ’59 and Anne Duffy Faculty Travel Award.

It was an awe-inspiring experience for Cammy, Director of Sustainability and Science Department Chair, and Rob, Director of Academic Technology and Innovation and Digital Communication, Design, and Innovation Chair, who spent a busy nine days exploring the vibrant islands and waters of this archipelago in Ecuador.

The volcanic islands of the Galápagos—which inspired Charles Darwin’s Theory of

Evolution—offer an impressive array of unique plants and animals not found anywhere else in the world. Perhaps the most famous of its inhabitants is the giant tortoise, and Cammy and Rob cherished their close encounters with these placid creatures.

“Tortoise breeding centers gather the eggs and hatch them, then put the babies into covered pens to protect them from birds,” Cammy shared. “The tortoises are fed every three days and provided with water, and when they turn five, they are released onto the island. Some migrate up to the highlands, and females return to the lowlands after 25 years to lay eggs.”

The Canterbury family was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Anne Duffy, the wife of Trustee Emeritus John P. Duffy ’59, in February. Their children, Hilary ’87 and Kevin’91, are also graduates of Canterbury.

Ever supportive of our faculty’s growth and learning opportunities, John and Anne established the John P. ’59 and Anne Duffy Faculty Travel Award Fund. The award is presented annually and has funded 29 trips since its inception in 1996. It was founded on the conviction that, in a shrinking world, intercultural experiences for educators enhance not only the individuals fortunate enough to receive the award but also their students.

We extend heartfelt condolences to John, Hilary, Kevin, and the entire Duffy family.

Isabella. “Walking through the fog and seeing the second largest caldera in the world—10 miles in diameter—was awe-inspiring,” Cammy recalled. It was also enlightening. “We could see the various smaller lava flows as well as how nature breaks it down and vegetation starts to grow,” she added.

Cammy and Rob also visited the Charles Darwin Research Station and went snorkeling at Tijeretas, a small cove where they mingled with a wide assortment of sea life.

“The snorkeling was our favorite,” Cammy said. “A sea lion came right up and played with me, spinning and diving around me.

We swam next to a marine iguana and saw rays, sea turtles, and fish.”

There were plenty of other learning moments and wonders to behold along the way. “I was surprised at how dry and volcanic the lowlands were, but how vibrant and green the highlands were,” said Cammy. “We saw the evolution process at its best: lava gulls are the same size and shape as our gulls in Connecticut, but black to blend in with the lava rocks. It was wonderful watching

Anne to help enhance instruction at the School while providing dedicated faculty the opportunity for international travel during breaks or vacation periods. It certainly did all that and more for Cammy.

“Showing the pictures I took there in my classes helps students visualize the concepts behind

evolution as we talk about why these animals are the way they are,” she said. “Seeing it firsthand and photographing it helps me connect my students to real-world examples.”

This Teacher Just Can’t Get Enough of Canterbury

C

anterbury alumnus and parent Francis X. Foley, Jr. ’64, P ’91, ’93, ’95, ’99 returned to the hilltop last fall for his second tenure as a faculty member. He previously spent 20 years at the School as Director of Admission, Dean of Students, Math Teacher, Coach, and Advisor. Prior to his return, he was most recently Chief Executive Officer for Avila Retirement Community in Albany, New York, and served as Head of School for Saint Gregory’s School in Albany for 10 years.

Originally from Fairfield, Connecticut, Fran currently lives in Southbury, Connecticut, with his wife Clare and their daughter Hannah.

We sat down with Fran to chat about his time at Canterbury, his career, and what the Saints family has meant to him over the years…

How did you originally come to Canterbury as a student?

I was attending a local high school and enjoying being anonymous, but my parents had other ideas. They had decided to send my younger brother to Canterbury, and when taking him to campus for an interview with then-headmaster Walter Sheehan, they asked me to come along.

After Mr. Sheehan’s interview with my brother, my father asked if he could have a word with him. So the rest of us left his office.

Then I saw the door open, and Mr. Sheehan said to me, “Can I see you for a minute?” We sat down, and he said, “Your father tells me you would like to come to Canterbury too.”

Well, this was the first I had heard of it, but I kind of stammered “OK, I did, I think.” We had a brief chat after which my family and I took a tour of the campus.

Two weeks later, my parents received a phone call from Mr. Sheehan saying that, miraculously, they had found a place for me and would like to offer me a position in the Fourth Form. After a lot of hemming and hawing, I finally agreed to go.

What memories do you have as a student at Canterbury?

What I remember most about Canterbury were the faculty members. They were a great group of teachers who at that time seemed old to me, but when I think back on it, they were probably all in their thirties. They opened me up to a whole new way of teaching and mentoring students. They also helped me realize who I was and how to get to where I wanted to be.

What was your first work experience?

A faculty member at Canterbury, Jim Moore, left the School at the end of my Fifth Form year and went to La Porte, Indiana, to start a school called La Lumiere, which was to be run by Catholic laymen in the Diocese of Gary.

Later, when I graduated from John Carroll University, Roderick Clarke—who went on to become headmaster at Canterbury—told me Jim was looking for people to teach at La Lumiere who had familiarity with Canterbury, which he modeled his school after. I had already gone through the private

boarding school experience, so when Jim said something like “dorm duty,” I knew what to do. I ended up working at La Lumiere for three years, then took a year off, earned my master’s degree from Fairfield University, and got married. After about a decade of working at two independent schools as a teacher and administrator, I was offered the Director of Admissions position at Canterbury.

What was it like to return to your alma mater as an employee?

It was a goal to come back here, so when I was asked to lead Admissions, I accepted. I did that job for 10 years, then became a Math Teacher—teaching three classes—and served as Dean of Students. Eventually, I gave up the Dean role, taught four classes instead of three, and continued coaching three varsity sports— football, hockey, and golf. So it was busy!

Canterbury has always been important to me.

I wanted my children to have the Canterbury experience as well, so it was wonderful to have four of them graduate from my alma mater. They all contributed to the life of the School in different ways. Like me, they have fond memories of being here and of the people they met and friends they have all over the country. My brother and his daughter are also graduates.

What led to your departure from Canterbury back then?

After 20 years, Jim Breene, a former faculty member, asked me if I would consider a Headmaster position at Saint Gregory School for Boys in Albany, New York. Saint Gregory was a private day school for boys, grades nursery through eighth, founded by families with connections to Canterbury.

In fact, the original president of the Board of Trustees there was Peter Kiernan ’40, P ’71, ’72, ’74, ’75, ’77, ’78, ’81, an alumnus and former Trustee and Board President of Canterbury. Most of the Saint Gregory graduates either went away to Cranwell School, a Jesuit school in Lenox, Massachusetts, that has since closed, or to Canterbury.

I was offered the position and accepted, initially on an interim basis to keep my connection to Canterbury. I stayed on for 10 years, and my family and I have very fond memories of my time there.

How did you end up back at Canterbury…again?

Pete Cotier ’86, Associate Head of School for Operations, called me about a Math Teacher opening and wanted to know if I was interested. I came to campus and met with a number of people, including Head of School

Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24; Associate Head of School for Academics Suzanne Roberts P ’24; Mathematics Department Chair Christopher Roberts P ’24; and Director of Studies Todd Mathewson. People kept mentioning that I had to meet Alison Bailey, the Director of the Donovan Center for Learning, so Todd walked me over there. Alison had her back to me when Todd said, “Alison, I would like you to meet Fran.” She turned and looked, and we both had a nice surprise. I have known Alison since she was six! I had no idea Alison Bailey was the former Alison Coope.

Needless to say, I was interested in the position—and here I am!

What is particularly special and compelling about this kind of school?

What is special about Canterbury is that you get to know the students in so many different ways. They may face academic challenges, but then you discover that they have a talent in music or drama or athletics, or they are just wonderful people. You get to know their strengths and weaknesses and help them in the process of growing up.

That was fostered in me by the people I met here when I was a student. It is hard for me

to explain the impact that Canterbury had on my life. There were teachers who went out of their way to get to know me and never even mentioned grades. They noticed I was struggling in something and would say, ‘Why don’t you come on Saturday morning, and we will get that squared away.’ I had come from another high school where I never got the impression that I could do that, or that the faculty even wanted to do that.

And while there are many different faces among faculty members today, they still have the same conversations at lunch as they did back then. They focus on school and the kids— ”What’s going on? What can we do for her?

How is he coming along in your class?” There is always that constant caring for the individual student. That is why my children came here. I wanted them to have that experience where the faculty really cared about you. Just the other day, one of my daughters said, completely unsolicited, “I loved my time at Canterbury!”

So how does it feel to be back?

At first when I came back, I didn’t know how the students would react. I mean, obviously I am not 30! But my relationship with them has been good. They are always curious and ask “How old are you?” And I say “92.” Students will kind of sneak in the fact that I taught their mother or father—but thankfully they never mention it in public! I enjoy teaching them—a nice group of young men and women.

Being here is so rewarding. I have such a fondness for the School. It was the best experience for me as a student—the personal relationships with classmates and faculty… the “taking academic work seriously” part… the spiritual life. The Chapel of Our Lady was very significant to my life here. Canterbury also helped me with commitment.

One of the best parts about coming back is seeing the growth in some of my former peers—how they have developed and continue to make significant contributions to the daily life of the campus. I am proud of them.

It was just nice to hear “Welcome back!”

STUDENTS CONNECT ACROSS THE POND O ne of the best ways to learn a language is to converse with people who speak it. That was the idea behind a new exchange program initiated by Director of International Travel Programs, Language Teacher, and Form Dean Julio Omaña P ’19, ’20 and Language Department Chair Keiko Mathewson for their Spanish 3 and Honors Spanish 3 classes last semester.

Through Zoom, the teachers connected students with peers from Level 3 English classes at Colegio San Cayetano in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Our Saints introduced themselves in Spanish, while the San Cayetano students did the same in English. They then exchanged informal dialogue and questions ranging from what they did that weekend to who they wanted to win the World Cup to their favorite foods.

“The goal of this is to get our students speaking with native speakers, and the same is true for the students in Spain,” Keiko said. “While both sides were nervous and hesitant at first, the calls went so well and were fun and informative for all.”

The video conversations are part of a larger, multi-faceted program that has included: • Letters that students wrote and

sent to their Spanish counterparts, who responded in kind. The correspondences have continued back and forth during the second semester.

• Ongoing partner conversations between students. Our students in each of the participating classes have been paired with two students from the partner class in San Cayetano, with further opportunities for communication going forward.

• Video production projects that students shared with their partners. Canterbury students made two videos in Spanish—“Life at Canterbury” and “Life at Home/ My House”—while San Cayetano students produced videos in English with similar themes.

“This was a really great experience. We were able to apply the skills we have been working on in class,” said Grace Morris ’25. “As English speakers who are learning Spanish, it was refreshing to hear Spanish speakers learning English; they make mistakes just like we do! We are both discovering the intricacies of each other’s language.”

What a fabulous way for our students to study a new language and gain a greater appreciation for another culture.

CONNECTING CLASSROOM LEARNING TO HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES The educational experience at Canterbury continues to expand students’ horizons in a variety of ways and venues. Recent field trips were perfect examples of this.

PHYSICS STUDENTS TAKE FLIGHT AT IFLY

O

ur Physics students reached new heights of learning both during and after their visit to iFly, an indoor skydiving facility in Yonkers, New York.

“It was a great experience. You are in the tunnel for about a minute and go as high as 50 feet,” said Cameron Folli ’23. “You had to fall into it to let the air catch you and then keep your hands above your head, almost like you are doing the YMCA dance. I would do it again, 100 percent!”

Science Teacher Rodrigo Avila Hernandez was looking for a real-world application of what he covered in class, and iFly proved to be an ideal fit. “Part of our Physics class is a unit on freefall, so this was a great opening project for that,” he said. When students arrived, they viewed a brief slideshow on what to expect, then split into two groups.

room to discuss the physics of the activity and determine their personal terminal velocity based on height and weight. The others headed straight to iFly’s innovative recirculating wind tunnel to suit up.

“Before we went in, it looked like a steep drop down under the catch net,” recalled Patrick Kane ’23. “But when you were in there, you forgot about it. I’m normally scared of heights, but this was enjoyable.”

Beyond the fun factor, students related the experience to their Physics studies. “You do not necessarily feel the amount of pressure you are under while in the chamber,” Cam said. “When you watch from the outside, however, you can see how they are projected and how fast they are moving. You can definitely make comparisons with what we learned in the classroom.”

Patrick agreed. “I learned how important drag is and how small movements can create a big change in results,” he explained. “They were very particular about hand positioning and leg movement. We had to be still and relaxed.

Discovering how the terminal velocity equation can be determined without actually falling was cool.”

Rodrigo discussed those concepts further in class with his students. “Once we completed the freefall unit, we looked at projectile motion and how that was affected by the things we experienced at iFly.” After such a dynamic hands-on learning experience, the sky’s the limit.

HOSPITAL SIMULATIONS OFFER FIRSTHAND PRACTICE

I

t may have been a simulation, but it sure felt like the real thing! That is what our Honors Biology students experienced during their field trip to the Center for Education, Simulation, and Innovation (CESI) at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut.

What an opportunity for these Saints!

According to the Hartford Healthcare website, “CESI is an international destination for training, education, and medical device

development. At nearly 50,000 square feet, CESI is among the largest and best-equipped medical simulation centers in the country.”

And Canterbury students were beyond excited to try out its many interactive features.

“The trip not only showed us how to perform CPR, use a surgical robot, and deliver a baby properly, but the doctors also taught us important life skills like patience, consistency, and loving your job,” said Miguel Garcia ’26.

“I found it all incredibly interesting and will never forget how the simulation baby felt in my hands after the simulation mom gave birth.”

The state-of-the-art facility includes a BioSkills Wet Lab for conducting research and development, preclinical testing, and hands-on training; Clinical Simulation Labs to learn and practice patient assessment, clinical decisionmaking, and working as a team; and high-tech classroom and lecture spaces.

Cammy Roffe P ’12, ’15, Science Department Chair, was delighted with how much her class was able to learn and practice.

“Students used medical-grade training simulators, including mannequins, to deliver a baby and see how that works,” she said.

“They also practiced laparoscopic surgery, learned CPR, and used heavy-duty simulator software. It was a very engaging program.”

Kaelyn Darrin ’26 was also quick to share her enthusiasm about the CESI trip. “The visit was exciting and something I would love to do again,” she said. “It was amazing to learn from and use the simulation and technology pieces that actual doctors are taught on!”

The opportunity originated in the fall of 2019 thanks to Canterbury alumni Heather Muirhead ’07 and John “Jack’’ Corroon ’68, former CESI employees who spearheaded our initial contact and visit.

Though they have since moved on from the company, Jack was able to help reconnect the School with the hospital for this year’s trip.

Embracing the Spirit of Service in Lourdes, France

I

t was a trip to remember for 13 Saints who joined faculty chaperones late last summer for a journey to Lourdes, France, one of the most spiritual cities in the world.

The School’s annual 10-day pilgrimage, which began in 1994, gives students the experience of serving the malades (people who are ill) visiting Lourdes for physical and spiritual healing. Lourdes, an internationally recognized Grotto, is the site to which over five million pilgrims travel to each year. This is the first time our students were able to make the trip since the pandemic.

to the city, and offered support in other areas as needed. They also met fellow high school students from across the globe, attended Mass, and wrote reflections on their experiences each evening.

They were accompanied by Director of Health Services Colleen Cook, R.N. ’02; Director of the D’Amour Center for Faith, Service & Justice Tracy Garcia-LaVigne P ʼ14, ʼ16, ʼ17, ʼ20, ʼ23; Director of International Travel Programs Julio Omaña P ’19, ’20; Director of Counseling Cynthia Willmen; and Canterbury alumnus Eli Taylor ’19.

The trip was filled with many memorable moments. The group participated in the Gestures of Water and the Stations of the Cross—peaceful, reflective, contemplative experiences that put them in an ideal frame of mind for the coming days.

Through an organization called OCH (Christian Office for People with Disabilities), the students met Guillaume, whose genetic disorder at birth made him non-verbal and confined to a wheelchair. Julio related how moved he and the students were at Guillaume’s story. “He loved getting out of the house and visiting with us, despite the difficulty of it,” he said. “Guillaume enjoys painting and making music, and his presentation started with a video he made and a song that he wrote. He has a computer screen on which he can write messages; it speaks for him. When asked what his favorite thing to do in Lourdes was, Guillaume answered, ‘Praying for others.’ It was beautiful.”

Julio could not have been prouder of how the students conducted themselves. “Our young people have been complimented up and down and sideways by everyone here,” he shared. “Many of the people we work with have mentioned how together, dedicated, and focused the students are. They are a truly amazing group!”

The student pilgrims had ample opportunity to experience the culture, energy, and people of Lourdes. They attended the mass for the Anointing of the Sick in the massive Underground Basilica of Pope Pius X, carried torches for a special Candlelight Procession, and assisted at Mass on the big Esplanade in front of the Basilica of the Rosary.

The trip had a powerful and lasting impact on the students. “I went to Lourdes expecting an overwhelming sense of sadness and grief in the malades and their families. Instead, I was met with their kind words and smiles, was overpowered by their love for God and each other, and witnessed the strength of a community bonded by faith,” Ella said. “I spent a week meeting people I’ll never forget: the

child volunteers I gave my handmade rosaries to, the wife whose husband suffers terminal cancer, the grandmother who brought her child there to heal. Lourdes stays in the minds and hearts of those who visit for a lifetime.”

It will certainly stay with Edmund. “What I experienced at Lourdes was something I will remember for the rest of my life,” Eddie shared. “One instance that really sticks with me is when we were selected to lead the nightly Candlelight Procession. I turned and saw 10,000 people behind us holding candles and singing. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. The amount of diversity in that moment was unreal. Every country, region, and religion was represented in this one parade.”

He was especially impressed with how they interacted with various people throughout the trip. “Outside of the work, the young men and women were very engaged with the malades and other volunteers. They were making friends and exchanging Instagram and Snapchat names,” he said. “The human connections here are strong. It is a small world where humanity is basically good, and people are kind, welcoming, and giving.”

Our first Lourdes pilgrimage took place in the summer of ’94 following a Canterburysponsored trip to the World Youth Day gathering in Denver, Colorado, the year prior.

Hope Carter P ’86, ’87, ’88, ’91, ’95, GP ’09, ’10, ’14, former President of the Board of Trustees, inspired the inaugural Lourdes Pilgrimage and has been instrumental in Canterbury’s continued involvement.

Social Justice Series Standout Saints Alumna Discusses the Impact of Title IX

C

lare Fitzpatrick ’09 is one Canterbury graduate who can truly appreciate what Title IX has done for female athletes in the 50 years since it was put into law in 1972. Clare returned to the hilltop recently to break down the landmark legislation for students in the presentation “Title IX: What is It and How Does It Work?”, hosted

by Women of Canterbury as part of the School’s Social Justice Series.

She was certainly speaking from experience—Clare set the scoring record for Canterbury Girls’ Varsity Basketball and led the team to a Class C title prior to a very successful career playing at Division I Cornell University. She was ultimately inducted into the Canterbury Athletics Hall of Fame. Currently the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at College of the Holy Cross, Clare has seen the effects of Title IX on all levels of play and from many lenses.

“Title IX has really changed the landscape of athletics and education systems,” she said. “Sitting in your shoes and even when I was an athlete at Cornell, I had no idea what Title IX was. I don’t think it was until I became a coach that I realized what it was and how much it affected women athletes, especially at the collegiate level.”

Clare spoke of the importance of knowing that every college has a Title IX Office and Coordinator available as a vital resource. “The biggest thing is that people—women especially—are afraid to say it out loud when something has happened to them. You should not be afraid; there is nothing to be embarrassed about,” she urged. “Your Title IX Office is there to support you, to give you the resources, and to investigate.”

She then shared some statistics that strongly support the notion that Title IX has been a major boon for female athletes. At high schools in 1972, nearly 290,000 girls and 3.6 million boys were participating. That has grown to 3.4 million girls and 4.5 million boys participating in high school sports today. And in ’72, only 30,00 women were participating in college sports; that number now stands at more than 215,000.

Touching upon what Title IX has done specifically for college athletics, Clare explained that things are now equal to a certain extent. “It doesn’t have to be exactly the same, but it has to be fair. It requires that you have equal access and equal quality,” she said. “The locker rooms are

all the same, your medical treatment is the same, you’re traveling in the same manner. The men’s team isn’t chartering flights while the women’s team is busing it. You are getting the same equipment and access to practice facilities.” And the law has had an even greater impact on scholarships, Clare explained. “Women’s scholarships have to be equal to men, and they must have the same number of slots,” she said.

Clare had some parting advice for the students in attendance, especially the young female athletes. “You have a voice—use it,” she told them.

“You don’t have to stick to the status quo. You live in an era with social media where your voice can make a change. It’s the most powerful thing you have. Keep pushing, keep asking questions, and eventually you’re going to move the needle.”

That message was heard loud and clear by the young women in attendance, including Women of Canterbury co-president Madeline Diglio ’24. “I loved it when Clare spoke about the significance of women’s voices and the power each of us can hold,” she said. “I am grateful to have had this opportunity to hear from such a successful figure in women’s sports who remainsl a valued member of our Saints community.”

As a nod to her time at Canterbury, Clare also encouraged students to find strong female role models, citing many of her own when she was a student on the hilltop. “Let them be mentors to you,” she shared. “It was the greatest thing for me to have strong females in sports here who I wanted to be like, and they pushed me to be the best version of myself.”

“Hidden Figures” Not Hidden to This Saint

T

he movie Hidden Figures, about the group of brilliant Black women who worked at NASA in the 1950s, was an ideal topic for a Social Justice Series session on the hilltop during Black History Month. And Dr. Miriam “Duchess” Harris ’87, P ’25, the granddaughter of one of those women, was the perfect person to lead that discussion.

First, students were treated to a showing of the movie hosted by the DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice) Council on February 1. The following week, they had the opportunity to attend “Hidden Figures: The History Behind the Movie,” where Duchess shared stories and experiences of her grandmother, Miriam Daniel Mann, one of 11 “human computers” who made key contributions to America’s space program.

Duchess told of a woman who was born in 1907 in Covington, Georgia—just 40 years after slavery ended—and would go on to earn a chemistry degree, teach high school chemistry in her hometown, and then move to Virginia with her husband William, who started a teaching job at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). So how exactly did Miriam, who had set her chemistry degree aside to become a “faculty wife” and mother, end up at NASA? “World War II broke out. All of the local employees at NASA were for the most part White men, and many of them were going to be deployed,” Duchess explained. “Officials went throughout the town looking for White women who were educated to work at NASA—but they were not being educated in the south at the rate they were in the north at that time. So the officials went over to the campus of Hampton and asked if there were enough Black women who could pass the Civil Service Exam. There were 11, and one was my grandmother. That is how she ended up going to NASA.” After hearing countless stories of her grandmother growing up, Duchess decided that she wanted to learn more and write a book about that time in history. As a naturally curious academic—she is an American Studies and Political Science Professor at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota—Duchess traveled to NASA’s Langley Research Center with one of her students to comb through the archives there. It turned out to be an eye-opening trip.

“One of the reasons my grandmother was able to get this job was because President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802 in 1941, which desegregated federal jobs—but it did not desegregate federal space,” Duchess told students. “That is why the Black women were located on the west side of the grounds, and they were literally hidden from the White people who worked at NASA because it was not completely legal for them to be there. They ended up becoming the ‘West Area Computers.’ That was code terminology for the people with high enough clearance to know that there were actually ‘colored computers.’ They would ask, ‘Who did the computing?’ If they heard ‘West Area Computers,’ they knew it was those women.”

Duchess spoke of the challenges her grandmother and others faced during that time of unrest from World War II through the Civil Rights Movement. She cited the important work of Black leaders like Booker T. Washington, the preeminent educator who was born enslaved but eventually opened Tuskegee University in Alabama, and Annie Easley, who worked at NASA in Cleveland, Ohio, and ended up becoming a Civil Rights activist and the agency’s first-ever Equal Opportunity Counselor.

Her words strongly resonated with students. “It was so inspiring and I am blessed to have attended,” said Raven Reaves ’26. “It is mindboggling how someone with so many stories from family members who knew such great Black women firsthand was right here on campus!

Learning deeper about these stories and how things came to be kept me on the edge of my seat.”

networking principles. The conference included large-group sessions and smaller groups allowing for on-on-one dialogue and sharing.

Two of the largest affinity groups in attendance were Mixed Race and Black, and having close conversations with students in each was one of the highlights of the conference for Tyrese. “My biggest takeaway was definitely from the affinity groups and how important it is for me to connect with all parts of my identity as a multi-racial man,” he said.

Conference Connects Student Diversity Leaders from Around the Globe

our students—Jack Greenberg ’24, Rahee “Ren” Kim ’25, Yueanshu “Angel” Fu ’25, and Tyrese Taylor ’23—had the experience of a lifetime when they attended the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) this fall in San Antonio, Texas.

Sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the conference is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from across the U.S. and abroad and focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community. This year’s theme was We the People:

and feel the same way I do. These connections were important to me.

Led by a diverse team of trained adult and peer facilitators, students developed cross-cultural communication skills, designed effective strategies for social justice practice through dialogue and the arts, and learned the foundations of allyship and

While in San Antonio, Ed and Olivia attended the NAIS People of Color Conference, the organization’s flagship commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development. Now in its 35th year, the conference continues its mission of providing a safe space for leadership, professional development, and networking for people of color and allies of all backgrounds in independent schools.

By the conclusion of the SDLC, Ren felt a special kinship with her peers in attendance. “Having conversations with the students in the program was easy and comforting,” she said. “We were all there for the purpose of listening to others and their stories, so being aware that people were there to listen to me felt good. This whole experience made me feel like a different person and educated me about standing up for myself and for others.”

Form Retreats Take Students Full-Circle

Retreats are major milestones for our Saints, from when they first arrive on campus to their final year here. Early in their first semester, new students joined Sacristans and faculty for a trip to Lover’s Leap State Park in New Milford for the Third Form Retreat, where they reflected on their first few weeks of school, set goals, and chatted about challenges and resources as they walked along the beautiful wooded park. During the Fourth Form Retreat, students participated in Walk a Mile for a Meal to support the New Milford Food Bank. They met up with other volunteers at the local Big Y, worked in groups to purchase food donations, and walked their bags one mile up to the First Congregational Church on the Town Green. The Sixth Form Dinner & Retreat on campus in September honored the senior class with a formal dinner, the time-honored tradition of shaking hands with each faculty member (repeated at Commencement), and the opportunity to write letters to themselves that are sealed and reopened in May.

Lessons and Carols Lift Spirits

S

pirits were soaring as the Canterbury family came together once again for “An Advent Festival of Seven Lessons and Carols,” the annual celebration of the blessings and joy of the Christmas holiday in the Chapel of Our Lady.

Students from our Carillon Guild, Chamber Ensemble, Orchestra, and Varsity Voices contributed their talents to the evening’s music. “The entire Saints community, myself included, eagerly anticipates this time-honored tradition of Scripture and song each year,” said Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24.

“Lessons and Carols is one of our most cherished events here on the hilltop.”

Jewish Celebrations Fill the Hilltop with Laughter and Blessings

T

his fall, Jewish students on campus enjoyed wonderful opportunities to share their culture and traditions with fellow Saints.

In October, they received a pleasant surprise when Chabad Lubavitch of Northwest Connecticut brought its mobile sukkah to the hilltop to celebrate Sukkot.

Known as “the time of our happiness,” Sukkot commemorates the 40 years the Israelites spent in the desert and living in huts after being freed from slavery in Egypt. Sukkot also celebrates the time when farmers have completed their harvest and can relax before the first rains of the season hit. The word sukkah describes a hut-like structure in which one sleeps, eats, and communes during Sukkot— reminiscent of the dwellings the Israelites stayed in during their travel to the Promised Land.

The mobile sukkah allowed our Jewish Student Association (JSA), faculty and students of Jewish faith, and others to make a blessing on the palm branch and enjoy a holiday treat.

In December, our community enjoyed a Hanukkah filled with laughter, love, and latkes during a special on-campus celebration in the Steers Center Ragland Commons before winter break. “I was very happy to see people at the Hanukkah party learning the basics of the festival of light through food, games, and music,” said JSA member Veikko Eskelin ’23. “Sukkot brought something I had personally never seen before—the mobile sukkah that came to campus to give us a break from the academic day to pray and reconnect with our traditions.”

Visiting Business Leaders Share Inspiring Stories and Experiences

T

he Canterbury Business Association (CBA) has been hard at work giving students plenty of opportunities to hear— and learn—from a variety of accomplished business professionals. Here are three of the most recent speakers who

came to the hilltop.

BOARD PRESIDENT ENCOURAGES AND CHALLENGES STUDENTS

W

hile on campus for the fall Board of Trustees meetings, Board President Bob Steers ’71, P ’11 was pleased to be able to chat with our students as a guest of the CBA. After all, Bob himself is an alumnus and his son, John “JP” Steers ’11 also graduated from Canterbury.

And Bob not only spoke with students—he issued them a challenge. During an interactive Q&A before a packed house in the Steers Center Ragland Commons, he discussed everything from entrepreneurship strategies to real estate investments to the challenges of running the highly successful global company he co-founded, Cohen & Steers. With 350-plus employees in five cities across three continents, Cohen & Steers manages roughly $88 billion worth of assets.

Stressing the importance of strong leadership, Bob cited Canterbury as an example. “We have donors who want to invest because they believe in the leadership here,” he said. He also encouraged students to explore their entrepreneurial sides once they have gained some experience in the workplace. “I’m very much an advocate of entrepreneurship,” he told them. “Just make sure you truly believe in your idea and it is not one that is already out there.”

Bob concluded by presenting students with his “prediction game,” challenging them to submit their best guesses for estimated prices by the end of the year on four specific investments. Students with the four closest estimates each had $250 donated to the charity of their choice.

MCDONALD’S OWNER SERVES UP BUSINESS ADVICE

A

s a Canterbury alumnus, Board member, parent, and owner of 28 McDonald’s restaurants, Harold “Tom” Clark III ’86, P ’22 gave students plenty to chew on during an on-campus talk hosted by the Canterbury Business Association.

Tom also spoke about his passion for philanthropy that was instilled in him at Canterbury, where he serves on the Board of Trustees. “We talk a lot at Canterbury about social justice and volunteering. It is important to give back to organizations you are passionate about and to help those less fortunate,” said Tom, whose son, Thomas ’22, is also a graduate. “The people at Canterbury are special; I don’t think I would have gotten where I am today without their support.”

Speaking about franchise business models and how to scale a business, Tom shared that his parents bought their first McDonald’s in 1978 when he was just 12 years old. After starting as a McDonald’s employee on his 16th birthday, Tom knew early on that he wanted to own one himself someday. He realized that dream in 2009 in Camden, New York, and it was tough sledding

Tom’s words had quite the impact on our current Saints. “It was amazing to hear Mr. Clark give personal advice and talk about what it is like being an owner-operator,” said Elliot Cantor ’23. “His presentation was extremely helpful toward understanding what it takes to be a valuable employee, community member, and entrepreneur.”

He stressed to students the importance of making the most of their time at Canterbury.

“Your job right now is being a student, so you want to be the best student you can possibly be,” he said. Two of Mark’s six children— Coco ’19 and Cyrus ’22—graduated from Canterbury, and daughter Phoebe ’24 is a current student.

After working at MTV Networks in the United States in the early 1980s, Mark took his vision for the company overseas and became the Founding CEO of MTV Europe in London.

He later served the same role at Foxtel in Sydney, Australia, before returning to London as CEO of BSkyB, where he launched Sky Digital. Mark then shifted into the aviation industry, becoming Chairman and CEO of NetJets Europe in London. He was also general partner of epartners, an early-stage venture capital firm.

With such a diverse and accomplished business background, Mark had plenty of experience to draw upon when advising his rapt audience.

And it certainly made an impact. “I found it interesting how he went abroad to London, Australia, Japan, and all these countries and PALLIUM FALL/WINTER 2022-2023

Board VP Shines Spotlight on Endangered Animals

T

he beauty of nature and the plight of endangered species were frontand-center when the Sustainability Club hosted John Donovan ’59 and his wife Dana for “Wildlife Wanderings.” Students were captivated as the couple shared compelling photos and stories of their travels around the world. As a graduate and Vice President of Canterbury’s Board of Trustees, John was more than happy to interact with our current Saints.

He and Dana told of their animal encounters in a number of exotic locales—endangered lemurs in Madagascar; polar bears on their migration route in Canada; grizzlies in Alaska’s Katmai National Park; rhinos in South Africa and India, many of whom are near extinction for their horns; jaguars hunting caiman in Brazil; and much more. Dana particularly enjoyed visiting Brazil, “one of the world’s best birding areas.”

John discussed the threats to a variety of endangered animals such as the pangolin, a scaly anteater found in both Africa and Asia. “This is the most trafficked animal in the world,” he said. “She is trafficked for her scales used in Asian medicine and also for her meat.”

Canterbury students such as Lynzie Sanford ’24 left wanting more. “The presentation was amazing,” Lynzie said. “The stories behind each photo were so fascinating. It was great talking to them and learning a little bit about the places they traveled to and the endangered species they have seen. I hope they visit again soon with more adventure stories!”

seasons. “For training, what is important in the offseason is to prioritize rest,” she said. “All of the details about how many calories or carbs you are consuming or how much you are training mean absolutely nothing if you are not sleeping, well-hydrated, resting between competitions, and focused in your training.”

Her résumé is impressive indeed: a two-sport college athlete who majored in Sport and Exercise Sciences at Ithaca College…a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from New York University…10-plus years of coaching middle and high school athletes…certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association… and, last but not least, being coached at Blair Academy by our very own Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24!

Winnie’s comments about body image seemed to especially resonate with her audience. “It is important to know that everyone goes through some kind of insecurities when it comes to body image,” she told them. “Have empathy for it. The more you can practice combating it, the easier it gets. Be the person who defends someone who is not in the room. Develop the culture that you want in your school or on a team.”

Winnie began her visit by chatting with Women of Canterbury members in the D’Amour Center for Faith, Service & Justice, then moved to the Steers Center Ragland Commons for her talk that was open to all students.

Touching upon topics such as body image, nutrition for fueling fitness, fitness vs. performance, and general habits, Winnie shared valuable pointers about preparation for athletes both during and between 42

Attendee Anne Celestino ’24 heard the message loud and clear. “Body image is a huge issue with teenage girls,” she said. “Dr. Lizardo’s advice opened a new lens for me and helped me start to appreciate myself and others around me more.”

Director of Health Services Colleen Cook, R.N. ’02 was pleased to see how much the students took Winnie’s words to heart. “Dr. Lizardo led a great exercise to get students thinking about how they interact with social media and how it may be affecting their perception

of self. This really seemed to get them to rethink how they use different social media apps,” Colleen said.

It was especially rewarding for Rachel to see her former player come to the hilltop. “Winnie was a starter on my varsity basketball team from 2002 to 2006. One of the very best parts of being a boarding school educator is the connections we build with our students that continue to grow long past their graduation,” she shared. “Winnie was one of my all-time favorite—and most talented—athletes to coach, but better yet, knowing her now as a colleague and accomplished professional is extraordinary.”

Students Connect for Lock-In and SafeWalk

I

t was a perfect evening as our Saints family gathered in solidarity on the Hamilton Stadium track to support an organization that “helps save and rebuild lives and creates safer communities.” The Center for Empowerment and Education in Danbury, Connecticut, has been a safe haven for victims of domestic and sexual violence since 1975, and Canterbury students were eager to rally around this vital cause.

The fundraising initiative, SafeWalk, was organized by Women of Canterbury on a night when the student club also held its annual Lock-In event to build camaraderie and connections among female-identifying students and faculty. The club’s Co-Presidents, Elsa Copeland ’24 and Madeline Diglio ’24, were excited about combining the two events.

“This is something we are both passionate about,” Maddie said. “We have been given this amazing privilege to become leaders and set an example not only for this club but also for the School. Now that we have the SafeWalk in conjunction with the Lock-In, it opens an opportunity for male-identifying students and faculty and even family members to show their support.”

Prior to heading down to the track, the girls kicked off the Women of Canterbury Lock-In with introductions and getting-to-know-you icebreakers that included questions such as “If you could have a new skill, what would it be?”, “What is your comfort show?”, and “What is something that no one knows about you?” Student attendees then enjoyed dinner and conversation and were joined by faculty and staff, including Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24; Director of Health Services Colleen Cook, R.N. ’02; and English Teacher and Coordinator of DEIJ Programs Olivia Pena.

After they returned from the SafeWalk to continue the Lock-In, Maddie led

the tired but happy group in meditation and quiet reflection. They then watched a movie— Legally Blonde—and participated in activity stations and the evening’s most inspiring exercise, the affirmations.

“We did a lot of affirmations. We wrote notes to a friend or someone who needed to hear something from you; things you wouldn’t necessarily say to their face that you would love for them to know,” Maddie said. “Some people were so happy to get them; they hung them up on their dorm wall.”

While the planning was stressful at times, it was well worth it for Maddie and Elsa. “I saw how supportive people are and how they can rise to the occasion,” said Elsa. “It wasn’t just Women of Canterbury members donating to and helping with the SafeWalk. The entire group stayed afterward, asking, ‘What else can we do?’ and thanking us for organizing it. That was definitely inspirational for us to keep planning future events like this.”

The Canterbury community truly came through, with 160-plus participants joining the walk. “We both put in so much work and were happy with the outcome,” Maddie shared. “It was so impactful. A lot of people were saying how good it felt to contribute to something like this.”

And the SafeWalk was not just for walking.

Nurturing the Health of Body and Mind

M

aintaining good mental health among young people is arguably more vital than it has ever been.

At Canterbury, Director of Counseling Cynthia Willmen, L.P.C. and a core group of Saints have it covered—with plenty of help from local providers and the campus community.

Cynthia is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and she and Director of Community Life EJ Soifersmith, an experienced social worker, are key members of the counseling team. “We do crisis intervention, crisis management, and treatment planning, so if there is any sort of crisis, we will handle that,” Cynthia said.

“Students can come in and just talk, so that’s a service. We do short-term counseling, but we are not a therapeutic school—so if further intervention is needed, there are wonderful therapists in the community we refer out to. We can also call on area psychiatrists and advanced practice registered nurses if we need somebody evaluated. We have nutritionists. There are many people who help us.”

Cynthia said the idea to form a Student Mental Health and Wellness Committee sprung from the COVID pandemic. “Last year, COVID was still in our midst, and I was looking at the 44

“The intention of the Mental Health and Wellness Committee is to educate our community on mental health topics that students are interested in and to decrease the stigma around mental health—to normalize the conversation around mental health issues.”

They are a lot younger than me.’ So I thought it might be good to put together a committee of students to keep me informed and come up with ideas. That is where it started.”

Initially, seven students got together with her in the spring of 2022 to discuss various ideas that might work on campus and how to put those into action. And things started to happen.

“We met with the administration, and they heard our ideas for what we could do better for the student body in general,” said committee member Jerome “Reece” Montrone ’23.

“For example, we had QR codes hung in every dorm—and are trying to get them in the bathrooms as well—for easy-link access to the Health Center if anyone needs an anonymous resource to get help or just talk to somebody.”

The committee has now grown to 14 students—Reece, Eliza Agredano ’24, Ruari Bamrick ’24, Elizabeth Carlson ’25, Madeline Diglio ’24, Colton Harte ’23, Amanda Lepore ’24, Emily Lynch ’25, Hannah Nash ’23, Sylvia Pinheiro ’24, Gracen Shea ’25, Caroline Thompson ’24, YingHua “Wendy” Wu ’24, and Lezhi “Martin” Zhang ’24. Their input has been invaluable to Cynthia as she plans and implements new programming.

ince joining us last summer as Director of Recruitment & External Affairs, David J. Tuttle has been a tremendous boon to our admission efforts. He is driving important external recruitment initiatives such as cultivating partnerships with education consultants and secondary school placement counselors, creating strategies for advancing new and existing markets, and leading international recruiting.

Prior to coming to the hilltop, David was immersed in the small independent boarding school community for 30+ years, 20 of which have been in enrollment management senior leadership roles. He came to Canterbury from Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut, where he served as Director of Enrollment Management. He previously led enrollment and admissions efforts at several independent schools in Connecticut, Virginia, Massachusetts, and New York.

“We were excited to add David to our already strong Admission team,” said Jake Dellorco, Director of Strategic Enrollment Management. “He is a tremendous advocate for small schools and the transformative opportunities they offer students and families. His extensive experience in the recruitment and enrollment arena is a great asset for Canterbury.”

In addition to his work experience, David continues to serve various other industry leadership roles.

He is a Board Director for the Small Boarding School Association and an Admissions Leadership Council member for both the Enrollment Management Association (EMA) and ASSIST. Previously he sat on the Independent Educational Consultant Association Foundation Board and The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) Conference Committee. He also served as a peer mentor for the EMA.

ast fall, Canterbury students helped commemorate Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) on campus in a special way. Observed each November in Mexico and other Latin countries, Day of the Dead is a holiday of prayer celebrating the memory and presence of our predeceased family members. With support from the School’s International Student Ambassadors, Luciana Jorge Gutierrez ’25, Rossana Segovia Mir ’25, and Spanish Teacher Miranda Ochoa Natera—who all hail from Mexico—planned and built a public Ofrenda (altar) in the Steers Center Ragland Commons. After securing materials such as sugar skulls, a table cloth, and other traditional decorations from their families, the three completed the altar for our Saints family to remember their loved ones with notes, photos, and other personal items.

Form Dean, Language Teacher, and Director of International Travel Programs Julio Omaña P ’19, ’20 was thrilled to see the holiday shared with the entire Saints family—and he wasn’t the only one. “Rossana’s and Luciana’s parents were excited and moved by the School’s support of this celebration and the girls’ work to accomplish it,” Julio said. “It was a brilliant idea that was well-executed.”

t was a prime example of “learning by doing” each time Canterbury students got to role-play and practice their diplomacy in realistic settings during a number of Model UN Conferences in the fall and spring.

Last November, Zhe “Andrew” Ji ’23, Beckett Reynolds ’23, Serena Bacetti ’26, and Lochlan Finnegan ’26 went to Brewster High School in New York for a more relaxed one-day conference well-suited for students new to the Model UN experience. The day included reenactments of a Human Rights General Assembly, a Disarmament and Security Committee, and a Crisis Committee.

ur students came together last January for a week of activities on campus to usher in the Year of the Rabbit. First, they hung Chinese lanterns and couplets around campus for the Spring Festival. They then converged on the Brodie Room for dumpling making and tasting, a delicious tradition open to the entire campus community. Students also led a Chinese calligraphy activity in Ragland Commons, and our Dining Hall featured an Asian-inspired lunch menu.

Language Department Chair Keiko Mathewson was exceedingly grateful for their efforts and shared her sentiments with an email to the school community upon arrival to her classroom. “Thank you to the students who took time to decorate and help ring in the New Year,” she said. “I love the colorful decorations around our doorways. It was a beautiful way to start the day!”

W

ho’s that student behind the camera? On the hilltop, it’s most likely Alex Avedisian ’25, a Fourth Former often seen around campus following his passion for photography or on assignment for Canterbury’s Marketing team at School events.

So when Canterbury grad and Bentley University Athletics Intern Ryan DeSantis ’22 invited him to take photos at the school’s Men’s Division I hockey game vs. RIT, he jumped at the chance.

“It was electric,” said Alex, who got to meet the Assistant Athletic Director, Head of Athletic

Marketing, and other photographers who were at the game capturing the event. “I gained great experience taking photos at a higher level. I also learned that there are a lot of parallels between college sports photography and professional sports photography.” And that was ideal for Alex, who has his sights set on pursuing photography both in college and as a career.

Shakespeare Comes to the Hilltop

A

huge BRAVO! to the cast and crew of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the William Shakespeare play presented by our theater program in Maguire Auditorium. Led by Theater Directors Sarah Armstrong and Keiko Mathewson, the students delighted audiences in recreating Shakespeare’s classic comedy for the two-night run.

Exceptional stage design, costumes, production, and acting all added up to a first-rate and thoroughly entertaining performance.

Traditionally Shakespeare’s most produced play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream marks the first time Sarah and Keiko have introduced The Bard to the Canterbury stage. “For years, Mrs. Mathewson and I have shied away from directing Shakespeare,” Sarah said on opening night. “Now that we find ourselves moments away from opening our first Shakespeare play ever, we wonder why we didn’t do it sooner!”

The cast was simply brilliant. School’s Donald and Linda Silpe Gallery from January 17 to February 3. The exhibition recognizes the best student artwork from schools throughout Connecticut. Submissions from students across the state are juried by professional artists and university art faculty, then selected according to three categories—Originality, Emergence of Personal Vision, and Skill/Technique.

The artist herself was beyond thrilled with the acknowledgment of her work. “It is my pleasure to receive these awards and have my artwork displayed and seen by others,” Alisa said. “These are an affirmation of my artistic journey and a motivation for better creations in the future.”

Noted Artist Shares Work and Tips with Eager Students

I

t’s not every day our Saints have an opportunity to view the work of—and chat with—a prominent artist right on campus. But that is just what AP Art students did when Nicole Alger, a highly successful local realist artist, displayed some of her drawings and paintings in the Edward J. Duffy Family Art Gallery.

Gallery Curator and Studio Art Teacher Chas Hollinger was thrilled to welcome Nicole to the hilltop. “I met her over the summer, and she is the first artist we have invited back to campus to show and meet with students since COVID,” he said.

A graduate of The Florence Academy of Art, Nicole answered student questions as she walked the gallery with them. The aspiring artists also had a chance to share their own work with her and receive critiques and recommendations on how to improve.

“I enjoyed visiting with Mr. Hollinger and his group of talented AP students,” she said. “Outstanding work!”

Nicole’s art has been shown in numerous museums and galleries both in the United States and abroad.

She had a piece in the juried, international show Painting the Figure Now at The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art (WMOCA) in Wisconsin and previously featured a solo show at The Judy Black Memorial Park & Gardens in Washington, Connecticut.

Since 2020, her still life and figurative work, in both painting and drawing, has been included in juried shows with Five Points Gallery in Torrington, Connecticut; online at Artsy with 33 Contemporary Gallery; and the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

Her works have been acquired by the Langham Hotel in Boston, American Arbitration Association, Naropa University, Fareed Zakaria, and Ashely Judd, among others.

Musicians Spread Joy and Good Cheer

T

here was plenty of spirited music being shared on the hilltop and beyond by our student vocalists and musicians last semester!

Italia Mia Shows

Our music students hit the road—but not too far—to perform two shows at Italia Mia, a local restaurant that hosts live entertainment. The shows coincided with Homecoming and Family Weekend in October, giving visiting Saints alumni and families the opportunity to enjoy marvelous music from our gifted students.

Guests were treated to a variety of songs from our Contemporary Music Bands, Varsity Voices, Canterbury Rock Band, and Jazz-Rock-Pop Ensemble, as well as additional performances from smaller groups. By all accounts, it was an amazing show! We have so much musical talent in our Saints community, and it was wonderful to share it at an off-campus venue.

Winter Concert

Our Saints were Jingle Bell Rockin’ when they took the stage for the Winter Concert in early December. The campus community packed Maguire Auditorium for the annual musical celebration of the season—and the performers did not disappoint!

Our Contemporary Music Bands and Jazz-RockPop Ensemble had the crowd cheering and singing along to a lively mix of traditional and contemporary holiday songs, from Silent Night to Funky Ol’ St. Nick to, yes, Jingle Bell Rock.

Director of Music David Overthrow was delighted with how his students rose to the occasion. “It is my honor to teach such immensely talented students and to witness their passion for creating and performing music, which they do at such a high level,” he said.

“All of the groups worked tirelessly to give a magnificent performance, and I am incredibly proud of them.”

Four Fall Teams See Postseason Action

T

he late fall sports season brought a lot of excitement to the hilltop last November when four of our teams made it to postseason play—the first time we had that many in more than two decades! Our Varsity Field Hockey, Varsity Girls’ Soccer, and Varsity Volleyball teams competed in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class C Tournament, and Varsity Football advanced to the Moose Curtis Bowl.

Varsity Field Hockey

After an outstanding 13-3 season in which team MVP Lily LaVigne ’23 and Gabriella Dellacroce ’23 earned All-New England Class C honors, the Field Hockey team hosted a quarterfinal game at home against

Greens Farms Academy. Our Saints showed tremendous grit in coming back to tie the game late in regulation before losing a heartbreaker in overtime.

Varsity Football

The football squad rode a stellar 6-2 record into postseason play behind team MVP and Evergreen Conference Offensive Player of the Year John Williamson ’23, who was joined on the All-New England Class B team by teammates Patrick Pannach ’23 and Elijah Manning ’23. The Rivers School prevailed in the Moose Curtis Bowl despite a hard-fought effort by the Saints.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer

With All-American Joy Okonye ’23 and fellow All-NEPSAC Class C honoree Ella Caraluzzi ’24 leading the way, Girls’ Soccer posted a terrific 11-5 record. After winning a key late-season game over The Frederick Gunn School to help secure a playoff spot, the team dropped a tough match to St. Luke’s School in the quarterfinal.

Varsity Volleyball

Following a 7-7 regular season record driven by outstanding play from sisters Morgan Lau ’24 and team MVP Addison Lau ’25 (also All-NEPSAC Class C), our Volleyball Saints won a thrilling quarterfinal game over Millbrook to advance in the tournament. While the run ended with a semifinal defeat to Cushing Academy, it was a terrific effort by all the girls.

“It was a great season for Saints Athletics this fall. Four of our teams qualified for postseason play, which is the first time in over 20 years,” said Director of Athletics Jim Stone P ’23, ’24. “In addition, our two Cross Country teams had strong performances at several events, including a Canterbury Invitational Championship for the girls (see article on page 54). This most successful group of teams was led by the strength and leadership of our senior class.”

Girls Earn Top Spot, Boys Take Third in XC Invitational

I

t has been a great run, and we are still going strong! Canterbury hosted its 49th Annual Cross Country Invitational in 2022, with more than 25 schools in attendance. The final results were great for the Saints—the Girls’ Cross Country team took first place in their division, while the Boys’ team, the defending NEPSTA Division III champions, finished third overall!

The comfortable fall day began with registration and observation of the 5K course before the first race started at noon. Each school’s teams were placed in a division depending upon

the school size, with large schools in Division I and small schools—including Canterbury—in Division II. More than 340 runners competed in the day’s events.

For the Saints Girls, Chloe Carroll ’25 (22:09) finished third in the race out of 63 competitors, with Virginia Zapletal ’24 (22:17) placing fourth.

Bradley Bozzuto ’25 (18:14) led the Boys’ team with a second-place finish out of 68 racers, with Thomas Lapham ’23 (18:30) and Ryan Oemcke ’24 (18:31) finishing in third and fourth place, respectively.

Girls’ Cross Country coaches Tracy Garcia-LaVigne P ʼ14, ʼ16, ʼ17, ʼ20, ʼ23 and Matt Biggart, along with Boys’ Cross Country coaches Ryan Rebstock and Pres Hagen, have been busy preparing their runners for the race as well as organizing the widely attended event with Associate Director of Athletics Paddy McCarthy ’94.

“This was my first experience being a part of the Canterbury Invitational, and I am still in awe of how organized and well-run the event is,” Coach Rebstock said. “The boys had a solid season debut. We have our work cut out for us;

our goal of repeating as New England champions is within reach if we continue to improve every day.”

The Canterbury Invitational has been an annual tradition since 1972 when Prep Schools across New England and the Mid-Atlantic were invited to bring their Boys’ Cross Country teams to the School to race 2.7 miles across our hilltop. Girls’ teams were invited to join in 1978. The race was increased to 3.1 miles—a true 5K—by 2002.

A WINNING GOAL VS. CANCER

A

t the Girls’ Varsity Soccer game at Hamilton Stadium last fall, it was all about the cause. That was why, on that night, every Saints player ditched their usual Columbia blue uniform shirt for one with a very special message: Red Card Against Cancer.

A nonprofit organization that proclaims “A Cure is Our Goal,” Red Card Cancer (RCC) endeavors to use one of the world’s most powerful games and its passionate fans to “kick cancer out of the game (of life).” And that is just what Coach Olivia Pena and her team did not only on the field of play but during the prior two days on the hilltop.

The girls set up a table in the Dining Hall for students and faculty to either purchase food or make donations, with all proceeds going toward cancer research. Many in our community also signed pledge cards to stand against cancer, which were displayed at the field as a strong show of solidarity. The game was designated a “blackout,” so attendees wore black to further heighten awareness of this deadly disease.

The experience was tremendously meaningful to Co-Captain Avery Trach ’23 and her teammates. “Being a part of the Red Card Against Cancer game was very impactful for me because I felt like I was representing a cause much bigger than myself,” she shared. ‘It was important to us as a team because we worked so hard setting it up, and the energy from the crowd in return made the event a night to remember.”

That energy helped lift the Saints to a satisfying victory over the School of the Holy Child. “Everyone was there cheering us on, and we got the win, so that was good,” said Co-Captain Joy Okonye ’23. “But it was more important to do something like Red Card Against Cancer. It shows that we care—not just about ourselves, but about others. It feels good to be part of a team and a community that contributes to making change in people’s lives.”

The event benefited Red Card Cancer, which was established in 2009 on the campus of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania when Founder Paul Payne set out to create a memorial event for his friend and coaching mentor, Joe Bochicchio, who lost his battle with melanoma. RCC has since grown into an organization with national reach and a growing impact on all levels of soccer in the United States. It is closely affiliated with Johns Hopkins’ Sidney Kimmel Cancer Research Center and, in 2018, entered into a partnership with the American Cancer Society.

We are so proud of our Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team, Coach Pena, Coach Eliza Beaudin, and the entire hilltop community for uniting in the fight against cancer.

The athletic accolades have been rolling in for our Saints in recent months! We were excited and proud to hear about these honors earned from all corners of our Canterbury community—students, faculty, and alumni…

JOY OKUNYE ’23

This Saint is an All-American! Joy was among 62 players nationwide selected by United Soccer Coaches to the 2022 High School Girls All-America Team. She and her peers were recognized during the All-America Ceremony and Reception this January at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

As a senior co-captain, Joy helped lead our Girls’ Varsity Soccer team to an 11-5 record and a berth in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class C postseason tournament. During the season, she became the program’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 93 career goals.

Her latest honor adds to a long list of awards she has earned—including being named to the All-NEPSAC/All-Region team, becoming a NEPSAC All-Star, and being invited to play in the WWNEPSSA All League Game along with teammates Ella Caraluzzi ’24 and Amanda Regina ’23. She has committed to play Division I soccer at Brown University after she graduates.

Among those most proud of Joy’s achievements is her coach on the hilltop, Girls’ Varsity Soccer Head Coach Olivia Pena.” The teams and coaches we faced were in awe of Joy’s speed and skill. Her talent amazes me,” Olivia said. “Joy is a fierce competitor who leads by example in every game. While I am sad to see her go, I know that she will do exceptional things at Brown next year!”

JOHNNY WILLIAMSON ’23

Johnny’s phenomenal season on the Varsity Football team culminated in a tremendous and well-earned honor: Evergreen Conference Offensive Player of the Year. But that only told part of the story for this talented Saint.

“Johnny Williamson was a dynamic player this fall, making a major impact on every game. Whether it was on offense or defense, Johnny was always counted on to make big plays, and he delivered, often in the biggest moments,” said his Head Coach, Director of Athletics Jim Stone P’23, ’24.

“He is one of the best skill players I have ever coached. Johnny was a tremendous teammate for the Saints, and we expect great things from him as he heads off to play for Cornell University next year.”

He is indeed committed to play for Division I Cornell in the fall after a season in which he excelled on both sides of the ball for Canterbury. Playing wide receiver and safety, Johnny had 41 receptions, 854 yards, and nine touchdowns, amassing more than 1,200 all-purpose yards. As a strong safety, he made 53 tackles with seven interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and three forced fumbles.

In addition to his Player of the Year honor, Johnny was named team MVP and earned an All-New England Class B first team selection.

LIDA COCO ’21

The feats just keep on coming for Canterbury graduate Lida. Already accomplished as a sophomore forward at Bentley University, she has been named a Division II Second Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association!

Lida was previously selected for the All-Northeast-10 first team this season and led the Falcons in scoring with seven goals, four assists, and 18 points. In her freshman year, she was named to the All-Rookie Team All-Conference NE10.

She was just as gifted a player during her time on the hilltop, where she earned All-New England Class C, All-State, and All-NEPSAC honors on the Varsity Field Hockey team. And she has family ties to Canterbury as well—Maintenance Supervisor Ross Coco is her father.

“Lida was a standout field hockey player in her time here at Canterbury,” recalled Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey Head Coach Madeleine Lord. “She raised the level of the program and those around her, always pushing us to do and try new things. She is absolutely deserving of all accolades in the sport.”

Lida was quick to share the credit with others. “I am fortunate to have attended Canterbury where the level of play prepared me for my college field hockey career,” she said. “Thank you to all my coaches and teammates who have influenced me so far. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

TYLER DINAPOLI ’22

One of our past stars of the gridiron continues to shine at the next level.

As a freshman running back for Trinity College, Tyler was named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Year!

Tyler’s 489 yards were good for fourth in the NESCAC and his five rushing touchdowns tied for second, helping Trinity to a 9-0 record and the conference title. He also averaged 4.8 yards per carry and 69.9 rushing yards per game. Tyler is the sixth Trinity football player ever to earn Rookie of the Year honors.

He was no stranger to accolades as a Saint either, having been named a “Best All-Around Athlete,” Co-MVP of Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse, MVP and Team Captain for Varsity Football, Offensive Player of the Year in the Evergreen League, and All-New England Prep B First Team for football.

That experience has served Tyler well in the next step of his journey.

“The prep school education at Canterbury really helped me with the time management skills I needed as an athlete and student in college,” he shared. “I will always carry with me the friendships and bonds I made there.”

The feeling is mutual among his peers and coaches at Canterbury. “Tyler is an outstanding football player with a relentless drive to win,” Coach Stone said. “We are thrilled that he has continued his success on the field at Trinity.”

ELIZA BEAUDIN

Psychology Teacher, Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey Assistant Coach Congrats to our very own Ms. Beaudin, who was chosen to play ice hockey for Team USA at Lake Placid, New York, for the World University Games in January!

The United States team played very well in the preliminary round, winning two of its five games with 8-2 and 21-0 victories over the Czech Republic and Great Britain, respectively. The three losses were by a combined four goals—3-1 to Japan and 6-5 to Slovakia before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Canada. In the Great Britain game, Eliza recorded a “hat trick” with three goals to go along with one assist! Overall, she finished the Games with four goals and three assists for a total of seven points.

Eliza excelled on the ice as a forward for Elmira College as well. Her many accolades at Elmira included CCM/AHCA First Team All-American, DIIICA Women’s Sport Student-Athlete of the Year, NEHC Player of the Year, and finalist for the Laura Hurd Award, given to the top player in DIII Women’s Ice Hockey.

Saints Converge on Campus for

Family Weekend & Homecoming

I

t was a joyful late-October weekend on the hilltop as family and friends of students joined alumni for our annual Family Weekend and Homecoming festivities. More than 400 visitors came to campus to celebrate.

Guests who arrived Thursday night were treated to a lively concert by talented student musicians and singers at Italia Mia restaurant in New Milford. The show featured a variety of songs from our Contemporary Music Bands, Varsity Voices, Canterbury Rock Band, and

Jazz-Rock-Pop Ensemble, as well as additional performances from smaller groups (see photos and article on page 51).

On Saturday morning, family members had breakfast together and were welcomed by Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24, who updated them on the current state of the School.

Afterward, Rachel shared her excitement about the weekend. “It is wonderful to see everyone

on campus,” she said. “I’m grateful that we can once again host families for class visits, faculty conferences, the Italia Mia concert, athletic events—a firsthand look at a day in the life of our students.”

There was more musical entertainment in store for families as Varsity Voices performed in the Steers Center Ragland Commons. Families also attended classes, faculty conferences, college information sessions, a presentation on mental health, and athletic practices. Throughout the weekend, they had the opportunity to view a student art exhibit in the Edward J. Duffy Family Art Gallery.

Parents, families, and students were then joined by alumni for the Homecoming celebration on Saturday afternoon, October 29. The beautiful fall weather was perfect for gathering en masse at the Homecoming tent for fun activities, food, and cheering on our Saints teams in action throughout the two days.

“It was great to be back on the beautiful Canterbury hilltop to fully experience Family Weekend,” said Amy Kessing P ’20, ’22, ’26.

“We enjoyed the opportunity to attend classes, talk with teachers, watch a field hockey game, and meet new friends.”

wo cities, two parties, one merry Canterbury family—‘twas a spirited celebration of the holiday season indeed!

NEW YORK CITY

New York City is always festive during the holidays, and it was even more so for area Saints who attended the annual Canterbury Christmas Party in December. More than 90 alumni and friends joined Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24; several alumni Trustees; and Society of Alumni Executive Committee members at Great Jones Distilling Co on Broadway for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and lively camaraderie.

Some alumni continued the festivities afterward at The Gray Mare in the East Village, hosted by the Canterbury Club of New York (CCNY).

“Connecting with old and new friends made the night extra special. We look forward to our next New York City event,” said CCNY President Elizabeth Dooley ’10.

It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas as well for DC-area alumni and friends when they gathered for their own party at The Admiral in Washington, DC. This group also enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres amidst the festive ambiance of one of DC’s premier event venues.

Attendees included Board of Trustees member Lawrence Fisher II ’77 and Stephen Hedger ’95, who delighted in sharing the joy of the season with fellow alumni from the region. “Canterbury was such a vital part of making me who I am,” he said. “It is always great to connect with other graduates, young and old, who share my love for our little gem on the hill.”

More than half the surviving members of the great Class of 1965 gathered in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, last September for fellowship, memories, and entertainment. Organizers Dan and Phyllis LaChance and Bob and Chris Lutringer did a splendid job arranging the get-together that included trips to Martha’s Vineyard and a cruise around Hyannis Harbor, leaving plenty of time for renewing the strong personal ties ’65 classmates have always enjoyed. The King Bees—Canterbury’s first rock and roll band—regaled the group with great tunes from the 1960s.

Not content with waiting out the normal five-year cycles for on-campus reunions, the Class of 1965 has committed to annual gatherings like this one. Plans are already being made for an encore later this year. 1965 classmates in attendance included Lee Beaulac, Larry Burke, Dana Comfort, Jack Costello, George de Alth, Patrick Foy, Martin Harrington, Bill Kernan, Dan LaChance, Bob Lutringer, Read McNamara, Charlie O’Neill, Cal Rafuse, Chuck Ragan, and Chris Zaloom.

Dan and Judy Shaughnessy ran into Carmen Policy, former president and CEO of the San Francisco 49ers, in their box seats at Notre Dame University this past football season, and their conversation turned to friend and classmate Peter Folger ’63. Since the 49ers were down to their fourth-string quarterback because of injuries, Dan suggested they pull Pete up from the “taxi squad” to play, as he was a great quarterback at Canterbury! Said Dan: “We had a great class and group of guys at Canterbury. It was a great school then and now!”

Dan and his wife were happy to share in a most memorable 75th birthday celebration for Martin Harrington ’65. Martin’s wife Julie, son Tom, and daughter Annie did an amazing job directing the staff at Denver Country Club and hosting the event. A few of the many highlights of the extraordinary evening were Annie and Tom toasting and roasting their Dad, Martin singing some favorite tunes from the ’60s; and Martin playing a CD of Karen, one of the Class of ’65 band King Bees’ greatest hits!

Michael Mannix Read McNamara

Read had a great “catch up” phone call with classmate Lawrence Aaron ’65. He also had a terrific afternoon with classmate Bill Gilbane ’65 in Jupiter Island, Florida (see photo). They shared many memories of Canterbury, and Bill promised to visit Read in Savannah, Georgia. Said Read of his friend: “Bill wins the Dick Clark Award for looking the same as he did in 1965!” Three other classmates—Bob Lutringer ’65, Chuck Ragan ’65, and Cal Rafuse ’65—also hope to visit Read in Savannah.

Thomas Wheelock

Tom retired from a career in independent schools as a teacher, coach, administrator, and Head of School. He has lived all over the country—Virginia; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; St. Louis, Missouri; Birmingham, Alabama; New Orleans,

Mike is working in a joint venture he created to invest in the government contracting, real estate, and tech industries. He is also enjoying life with his family, especially his grandchildren. He still plays tennis regularly and shoots pictures, some of which have won international awards. He spends many happy hours with his neighbor, Cofer Black ’68.

Stephen Cunningham

Stephen got together last July with Greg Ahern ’70 and Peter Kiernan ’71 in Newport, Rhode Island. “Greg and Peter are Newport historians extraordinaire with great stories,” Stephen said. “Canterbury grads from the class of 1970 have been noticed all over the place in the past couple of years. In short, never has a better group of guys had the privilege of spending time together in the hills of New Milford.”

James Kaywell

It is with great relief that James, his significant other Joan Delucas, and their dog Jameson survived the 15-foot storm surge and 150-mile-per-hour sustained winds of Category 4 Hurricane Ian. They rode out the hurricane at their Fort Myers Beach, Florida, home, which was ground zero for the worst of the storm. Fortunately, their beach home is raised 18 feet on stilts, so the surge only submerged their cars and destroyed the garage and storage and mechanical areas below the raised living area. The high winds damaged the roof, soffit, and some windows and blew down the side chimney, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the house, which remains under a blue tarp. The home is now livable but requires substantial repair. James reports that “Hurricane Ian was unbelievably scary. At one time, Joanie and I actually feared for our lives. The house was shaking and twisting, the rain was blinding, and winds were howling.

We thought the house might come off its stilt pilings, and all of our float gear was in the submerged garage. The experience so frightened Joanie that she was hospitalized for trauma.”

Michael was grateful to Peter Bresnan ’73 for organizing a trip to Colorado for the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival.

Ben FitzGerald ’73, Ward Wallau ’73, and Paul Blish ’73 met up with Michael and Pete at the resort for three days of music, memories, chairlift views, and a beer or two. They plan to expand the circle and make it an annual trip somewhere.

The release date for Stephen’s seventh book, The Glass Chateau, is June 20, 2023. It is a historical novel about rebuilding France after World War II, told through the eyes of an assassin for the Resistance who is not done wanting revenge. Stephen’s sons are thriving, living as roommates in the East Village in New York City. He is still loving life in Vermont after 37 years.

Ed wants to let fellow alumni and friends know that the next “Canterbury Unplugged” event is on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at the Outta The Way Cafe in Derwood, Maryland, owned by Chip Berman ’72. But Sam FitzGerald ’72 noted that “We are officially calling this ‘Canterbury Plugged In’ with a number of alumni and friends planning to perform on both acoustic and electric guitars, an electric bass, mandolin, drums, box drum, and more.” Chip added, “It is going to be a great time.” The event welcomes all alumni to come jam with friends. Peter Bresnan ’73 and Sam will be leading a talented array of classmates and friends. In addition to Chip, artists currently rearranging their touring schedules include Peter Shonk ’72, Dan Whalen ’72, Sandy Stevenson (friend), Mike Conniff ’72, John Ringstad ’75, Billy Haxo ’76, Gib Geiger ’77, Bob Corroon ’77, and Dave Langley ’79. John will also be joined by Elaine Mullen Peer ’77 and Dave Karlen ’76 for a special set featuring vocal performances.

Cindy published Vámonos: Mexican Folk Art Transport in English and Spanish, the eighth book in her bilingual children’s series, in late 2022. Illustrations are photos of wood carvings made by artisans in Mexico.

The book received a starred review in Kirkus.

Cindy says it is a great way to teach young children about the fun of going to the library!

She continues to thank Jean Hebert and Sylvia Lahvis, her Spanish and Art History teachers at Canterbury, for instilling a love of language and art in her.

Last summer was great for Victoria, who hosted two “mini” Class of ’81 reunions.

In August, Tony Walters ’81, Melissa and Matt Glaser ’81, and Judi and John Ivimey ’81 gathered for lunch at Victoria and Jeff Rovin’s home in Guilford, Connecticut. The following weekend, Kathy (Leonard) Murray ’81 stopped by as she was passing through the area. Fun times were had by all!

Located in Staatsburg, New York, the Anderson Center for Autism supports the mission and operation of the Anderson Center for Autism and the Anderson Center Services. Michelle also serves on the Program and Services Committee and has been involved with the Anderson Center for many years in various capacities.

Alice was promoted to Head of Global Therapeutic Area Communications at EMD Serono, Inc. in October 2022. In this role, she is responsible for external and internal communications across all therapeutic areas at the company, including clinical development and marketed products. She was previously the Head of Communications for the Global Neurology and Immunology Therapeutic Area. Alice resides in Boston, Massachusetts, with her rescue dog Leo when she isn’t traveling. In 2022, she visited Seattle, Southern California, Mexico, Spain (twice!), the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK—plus many shorter-haul trips to Connecticut, New York City, Maine, and Cape Cod.

Jason joined A.P. Construction Company as its Chief Operating Officer. Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, the company managed the construction for Canterbury’s Steele Hall expansion and renovation in 2009. Jason also recently completed his M.B.A. along with having a J.D.

Meg recently moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, with her husband Randy and eightyear-old son Ransom, who is attending Rosarian Academy. Meg is still designing homes around the country and now focuses more on The Sunshine State. Currently, she is Board President of an amazing nonprofit that she is taking national called “Welcome Home Angel,” which renovates and builds safe, happy homes for children with special needs.

Scott Frost Patrick Devlin

Ames Valient Devlin was born July 21, 2021.

He has been growing quickly, mentored and cared for by his older sister, Lyra (9), and two older brothers, Lochlan (4) and Foster (7). With his siblings anticipating his every move, he has only felt the need to utter a few words but mostly communicates with grunts and nods. Once he figured out how to use the trash can, Ames has been “helping around the house” by discarding all manner of things. At one point, Patrick even caught his son testing the lever on the front door!

Scott sends his best wishes to his classmates and teachers on the hill. This past year, he celebrated his 10-year anniversary at TaylorMade Golf Company, where he is on the leadership team and oversees Global Brand Marketing and Go-To-Market. He was recently honored with TaylorMade’s “Pivotal Performance Award” for work on the 2022 Stealth Driver launch. He lives near San Diego with his wife and two children, ages 2 and 4. He hopes to make it back for the reunion this year to see everyone. Otherwise, if any classmates or alumni are ever in the San Diego area, he would love to grab coffee or show off one of San Diego’s famous microbreweries to catch up and network!

Tralee graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Business Management degree from St. John’s University in 2014. Afterward, she began managing World Gym in Pawling, New York, a family-run business since 1989. After realizing her passion was in fitness, health, and management, she became the Owner/Operator of the gym in 2016. Along with the gym, she is also the Executive Director of her family’s foundation in honor of her brother, The Ryan McElroy Children’s Cancer Foundation, which helps children in the Mid-Hudson Valley who have life-threatening illnesses. In that role, she manages the operations of the foundation, communicates and meets with social workers and families, and plans and hosts events. Tralee attributes her success, work ethic, and values to her years at Canterbury and thanks the entire Saints family!

Quentin Silverio

Quentin graduated from Army Ranger School on January 27, 2023. The 62-day course is broken up into three separate phases, with assessments at the end of each phase. He completed the course by passing each phase on his first attempt. Less than 25 percent of those who started with his class in October graduated without recycling any of the phases.

Daniel J. Altobello ’59 194 1 –2 02 2

T

he Canterbury community mourned the passing of Daniel J. Altobello ’59, who died peacefully on September 2, 2022, after a long illness.

Dan Altobello was born on February 28, 1941, in Westfield, Massachusetts. A proud graduate of the Class of 1959, he was a most loyal and generous supporter of his alma mater, whose stalwart commitment to the Annual Fund remains unsurpassed.

Equally generous with his time and talent, Dan served on the Board of Trustees from 1974 to 1986 and was honored with the distinction of Trustee Emeritus in 2013. Upon receiving this title, Dan wrote to then-Headmaster Thomas J. Sheehy III P ’92, ’98, ’04, “I am deeply appreciative of all that Canterbury has given me in my brief stay there.” To be sure, Canterbury is profoundly grateful for all that Dan had given throughout his lifetime to his beloved school.

“Dan was a true Cantuarian who cared for and served Canterbury School for many years. His friendship and devotion will be greatly missed,” said Head of School Rachel Stone P ’23, ’24.

“From his exceptional support on behalf of our students to his guidance and expertise as a Trustee, Dan was a valued member of the Saints family.”

Fellow alumnus and Canterbury Trustee Lawrence Fisher II ’77 has fond memories of his good friend. “Dan was one of the most special people I have ever known,” Larry said. “He was such a pleasure to be with, whether it was at his office discussing family or at some event. Every time you dealt with Dan, it was a high point of your day.”

Prior to his retirement from the travel and tourism industry, Dan was the Director and Chairman of Onex Food Services, Inc., the parent corporation of Caterair International, Inc. and LSG/SKY Chefs. From 1989 to 1995, he served as Chairman, President,

He received an M.B.A. from Loyola College Graduate School and a B.A. in English from Georgetown University. He attended Harvard University’s Graduate Institute for Educational Management as well.

Dan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maureen, and their two sons, Mark and David.

Donald G. Robert, Sr. P ’82, ’83, ’84 193 4 –2 02 2

W

e were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former faculty member Donald G. Robert, Sr. P ’82, ’83, ’84, who died peacefully at his home in Coconut Creek, Florida, on Saturday, November 5, 2022. He was a beloved member of the Canterbury family as a teacher, coach, mentor, and colleague.

Don grew up in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where he found his love of family, friendship, and athletics. He quickly rose to football fame while attending American International College.

In 1963, Don signed his first-year contract to play for the Springfield Acorns of the Atlantic Coast Pro Football League.

He was named the Most Valuable Lineman that year, but despite a significant offer to stay on as a traveling coach/player, he made the decision to be at home with his family.

Don began his career as an educator at East Catholic High School in Manchester, Connecticut, and through his network of friends and family was presented with an opportunity to move to New Milford, Connecticut, to teach and coach at Canterbury School. He accepted, and the next 18 years are forever ingrained in our School’s proud history.

From 1967 to 1984, Don was an esteemed fixture on the hilltop, admired by students, athletes, and colleagues alike. He taught French and coached Football, Wrestling, and Baseball. Don was extremely proud of leading his 1970 wrestling team to an undefeated season and multiple New England championships through the years. He also enjoyed coaching his son Don, Jr. to an undefeated football season in 1980. Don, Sr. was twice a Canterbury Athletics Hall of Fame inductee—once as a coaching member of that ’80 football team and a second time in 2017 when he was honored personally for his unprecedented accomplishments as Wrestling Head Coach.

At his most recent induction ceremony, Don was lauded as a coach whose “biggest success was seen in the extraordinary growth of the young students he helped to shape and inspire”

and who was “responsible for creating a wrestling legacy that left an indelible mark on each of the young men he impacted.”

In June 1984, the Robert family moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where Don was accepted into the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Academy and worked as a deputy for 10 years. While in Florida, Don also coached the Cardinal Gibbons High School football team in Ft. Lauderdale. After a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, Don retired from coaching at the age of 82.

When he was not teaching or coaching, Don was an avid softball player, playing four times a week. He and his wife Barbara were also devoted members of St. Joan of Arc Church in Boca Raton, where they sang in the choir from 1984–2019. Don was a Miami Dolphins season ticket holder and loved tailgating at and attending University of Miami football games.

Don was preceded in death by his loving wife Barbara, his parents Rose and Armand, and his sister Claire. He is survived by his three children—Don, Jr. ’82; Frances ’83; and Stephen ’84—and his precious granddaughters Olivia and Juliet, as well as brother George and wife Carla and many nieces and nephews.

ast fall, we mourned the passing of Stratford C. Wallace ’55, a longtime resident of New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut, who died at home on Monday, October 10, 2022. He was 85. He served on Canterbury’s Board of Trustees from 2001–2004.

Stratford participated in football, soccer, basketball, hockey, and track while at Canterbury; was a member of the Camera and Chess Clubs; played the carillon; and served on the staffs of the Cantuarian and Tabard.

Born in New York City, Stratford Wallace was the son of Dr. Stratford Corbett Wallace and Dolorita Fitzgerald Wallace. He was a graduate of Georgetown University in 1959 and Fordham Law School three years later before serving in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. He went on to become a real estate attorney and managed his family’s New York City real estate properties.

A deeply devoted and loving husband, father, and brother, Stratford cherished spending time with family. He enjoyed sailing, running, and ocean swimming in Spring Lake, New Jersey, and Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Like his parents, he was passionate about New York City, particularly its real estate history.

Stratford was a devout Catholic and an ongoing supporter of many charitable organizations, including the Little Sisters of

the Assumption, Calvary Hospital, and the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF). He was deeply moved by his many visits to Haiti with the HHF. Stratford also gave generously to Canterbury’s Annual Fund and kept in frequent touch with his alma mater through the years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathleen F. Wallace; his sisters, Marie Powers and Julia Wallace; his brother and fellow Canterbury graduate, William ’57; his five children, Kathleen Wallace-Silver, Deborah Ruddy, Stratford Wallace, Jr., Laurence, and Brendan; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Dolorita Moore.
