FOREWORD

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

The National Institute of Design (NID) has been witness to a momentous occasion; through an Act of Parliament, the NID Bill was passed and NID is now recognised as an Institute of National Importance. This is, in every way, a landmark achievement for the institute. This Bill was unanimously passed by the Rajya Sabha on July 7, 2014 and by the Lok Sabha on July 9, 2014. So far, India has 40 institutes that are recognised as Institutes of National Importance, of these, 36 are engineering institutes; NID is the 41st institute and also the only design institute to be conferred with this honour. This new status will help NID to turn the spotlight on Indian design practices and thoughts and give them their due recognition.

up new opportunities for research and exploration for both students and faculty from NID. In June 2013, the DRPSCC (Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee of Commerce) visited the NID campuses at Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The Chairman of the Committee, Shri Shanta Kumar, MP interacted with the students, faculty and staff and saw the facilities and works of the students. Further to this, the Secretary, DIPP and I were invited for a meeting with the members in New Delhi for further discussions and clarifications. The DRPSCC also organised a separate meeting of all stakeholders in New Delhi.

Till now, NID was awarding only diplomas to its students, because of which they did face some difficulties while looking for jobs, applying for further studies abroad, or for research work. Now, with the latest recognition it has received from the central government, NID will be able to award degrees and PhDs to its students.

Students and alumni of this institute have always been contributing to society through various design initiatives, and the status of Institute of National Importance will further bolster and invigorate their initiatives and help them contribute to overall national development. Indeed, this new recognition will certainly open

The passing of this Bill has indeed come at a most opportune moment, thus asserting the role of NID and the importance of design across all sectors in the country.

The institute will be a valuable avenue that facilitates interaction between the academia and industry. It will play an active role in design dissemination through publication of research papers, books, and monographs and visual media such as films. In 2014, NID was featured among the Top 30 design colleges of the world by Ranker. For NID, it is indeed an honour to facilitate opportunities of academic exchange with several leading design institutes in India and abroad. Social responsibility is integral to design. With sustainability, inclusive development, and women’s empowerment as the mantra, NID will continue to make concerted efforts to share its design expertise with neighboring countries. It is already engaged in design development initiatives across SAARC nations and those from Africa too.

NID was established in 1961, and recently, it celebrated its golden jubilee. For more than fifty years now, NID has been a witness to the socio-cultural, economic,

and technological changes taking place within India and across the world in general. The passing of this Bill declaring NID as an Institute of National Importance is inspiration enough for the institute to renew its pledge for promoting multidisciplinary learning of design through its educational and training practices and research initiatives. NID will remain steadfast in its attempts to improve the quality of life and herald in renewed initiatives of co-creation.

NID has reached a pioneering position today. It is with utmost humility that I acknowledge the innumerable contributions made by members who held office in various governing councils of NID since its inception, the senior faculty and staff members of the institute, and the enthusiastic batches of students who have all strived to make this institute what it is today. Indeed, it is with the wholehearted involvement of these four major stakeholders that the institute is held in such high esteem at both the national and international levels.

ABOUT THE CHANNEL

FVC Plus is an extension activity of the Film & Video Communication (FVC) discipline at the National Institute of Design (NID), addressing an internal as well as a worldwide audience. It aims to periodically organise, for the benefit of the FVC communicaty (students, staff and faculty), lectures, interactions with seminal figures or about significant trends in television, cinema and allied fields. These are video recoded as well. An edited version is later uploaded on the NID FVC PLUS YouTube channel for universal viewing. The NID FVC PLUS YouTube channel also showcases for free, some of our important student films made in the last two decades or so.

ABOUT THE COORDINATOR

Arun Gupta teaches in the Film and Video Communication discipline at NID. He holds a PG Diploma in Direction from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and a BA in English Literature from the University of Delhi. He joined NID in 1996.

He takes courses in the Foundation Programme; apart from taking courses in disciplines such as Film and Video Communication, Animation Design, and Graphic Design. He takes courses such as Scriptwriting, Direction, Film Language, and Film Appreciation. He has been the Chairperson of the NID Film Club and has also been the Founding Editor of Cut Here, the moving imageprint magazine. In 2005, he directed An Other Journey, a documentary film showcasing NID’s activities in the

areaof Indian crafts and textiles. He has coordinated severalnational-level meets at the institute, including Design for Entertainment Media (2001) and Niche Programmingand the Future of Broadcast Television (1998).

Arun has been associated with various film festivals.He organised the much-acclaimed South AsianDocumentary and Short Film Festival, Alpavirama 2011at NID and is also set to be part of the International Juryat Beskop Tshechu Film Festival in Thimphu, Bhutan.In 2007, he was a member of the International Jury at the Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival at Doha, Qatar and in 1998 he helped

coordinate the celebrations for 50 years of the Cannes Film Festival, which included a national seminar on the topic—Future of Cinema. He has conducted many popular short-term workshops in Film Appreciation and Scriptwriting throughout India with companies such as CNBC-TV18, Tata Interactive Services and Maya Entertainment Ltd., and institutions such as IIM, NIFT, IIT, CEPT, TISS, MICA, Srishti, and DJAD. In 2002, he directed the documentary, Vignettes of Indian Retail on the changing face of the retail business in India.

Arun is currently writing a book on Bollywood villains.

It saddens him to think that those who work hastily and those who enjoy working are brought to the same pedestal.

We observe how raw molten metal goes through different processes before it is sold. The film maker critiques safety issues in this film, as we see workers dealing with chunks of molten steel without adequate safety gear.

Listening to Shadows begins with Ranchod. P. Soni introducing us to his world of a born blind. Now, a teacher at the Blind People’s Association school at Ahmedabad, he makes a journey along with the film-maker Koushik, which starts as an attempt to make a film together on the worlds of each other. The film makes a non-linear travel to his past present and future, where he recollects and reflects on childhood, marriage, discrimination, friendship, death, disability and dreams.

Gijubhai Badheka, the visionary Indian educationist, founded a unique school called Dakshinamurti Bal Mandir in 1920 near Bhavnagar, Gujarat, inspired by the ideas of Maria Montessori and Gandhiji. This documentary tries to capture the continuing spirit of Gijubhai’s Bal Mandir’s through a lively recollection of its glorious past, via an animated dialogue between Vimuben Badheka (Gijubhai’s daughter-in-law) and Bharatbhai Pathak (Gijubhai’s biographer).

The film is an observational documentary on Bannubhai, an ageing shehnai player, through the course of a day and tries to capture his routine that is now his life.He has been playing the shehnai and drums in the Nahabat Khana overlooking the Badshah’s Tomb outside the Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad for the last sixty years. In spite of not knowing how to play the shehnai very well, Bannubhai tries to keep a 700 year old tradition alive.

One Show Less concerns itself with the increasing numbers of single screen cinemas that are shutting down, all over the country. The film focuses on one theatre, Usha Talkies (in Ahmedabad), whose spirited employees and raucous, seat-breaking public make it one of a kind. This cinema is meant for the masses. The question raised is, are the masses to be deprived of the incomparable experience of the big screen? Through a series of evocative arguments put forth by the employees of Usha Talkies, a vivid portrait is painted of a unique way of life, which may soon become extinct. Sawan Mukherjee is a famous film star who gets kidnapped by a mysterious gang of kidnappers, a week after his engagement to famous Hindi film starlet Bipasha Basu. Reporters and police speculate on John Abraham’s involvement in the crime. The film follows Sawan through this short melodramatic saga of epic love, tragedy, passion, emotion, devotion, loose motion, sun tan lotion, thriller, action, suspense and sex. It is a farce treated in the melodramatic style of Blockbuster Bollywood cinema.

The film employs various staple forms prevalent in Indian mainstream cinema such as heavy musical accompaniment, unusual plot twists and unrealistic and silly narrative devices.

In the 17th century, Wali Gujarati was the first to begin writing ghazals in the Urdu language. His influence on ghazals and Urdu can be compared to that of Chaucer’s on the English. But he was ironically well forgotten till his tomb was destroyed in the 2002 communal riots in Ahmedabad. This film uses the life of the poet and his verse to examine ideas of culture, language and history through the lens of change. For we must remember that the history that is accepted as fact, present in our records and textbooks, is after all written by the victor. But what of the history that exists in a space: imbued in the earth, in stone, in the very silence itself?

Prakash Travelling Cinema attempts to capture the spirit of an age old medium of entertainment through a bioscope film projector owned by two friends who share a deep friendship, unceasing optimism and most of all, an undying passion for their travelling cinema. The documentary takes you through their lives on the street where they walk around the city lugging their antique travelling cinema and lure people into watching glimpses of movies, which their cinema has to offer.

They flit from furnished room to furnished room transients forever. Transients in abode, transients in heart and mind. Inspired from O Henry’s short story “The Furnished Room’, the film explores the theme of continuous, relentless passage of time. A young man lands in the middle of an unknown city. Is he looking for something? Or is he lost? One by one, as the characters of a cryptograph start revealing themselves, the little signs left by the furnished room’s procession of guests feel like clues for his search. The film is full of shifting points of view. Divided into three screens, the story slips in and out of the broken frame and creates for the viewer a visual experience. This film was screened as a part of the NID Film & Video Retrospective at ALPAVIRAMA 2011.

Tran Eka Tran (three ones a three) is a documentary film about an informal teacher, a single mother nurse and her young girl. The film shows each one of them pursuing their dreams and desires. Saraai shows an NRI from Leceister (UK), Siddhis (originally from Africa) and an old Sindhi woman. They come from different places and yet they all call the city of Ahmedabad ‘home’. Where is home for these people? What does home mean for all of us? Is it the place we come from?

Or is it where we reside? Shot on location in Ahmedabad, Saraai shares the stories of its people, reminiscing about their past: trying to understand their present, newly acquired identities. Saraai literally means a ‘rest-house’, a temporary home for travellers. The film itself is about such travellers. Through their experiences, the film attempts to understand the very idea of home and belonging.

Azaan is the Islamic call to worship, at prescribed times of the day. The Muezzin (or Baangi) is the person appointed at a mosque to recite the call to prayer.

Usually hidden from view, and known only by their voice, this documentary brings to life two such Baangis in Ahmedabad and their relatively humdrum struggle for existence amidst the House of God.

Chaattalmazha is a film that celebrates childhood through a day in Geetu’s life. Shot in lush green Kerala, this film also celebrates the rain. Geetu, a sober and relatively quiet girl, who is quite particular about her appearance and punctuality, slowly breaks all rules just to fulfil her small desires. The drizzle resembles the spontaneity of a child.

The film deals with the idea of storytelling through a poetic style. A mix of images, animation and video, ‘Totanama’ is a multi-media story - of three stories narrated by a parrot. The subtle nature of the film makes it similar to the stories we have loved hearing from our grandparents. The film highlights issues of women’s liberation and independence.

This film was screened as a part of the NID Film & Video Retrospective at ALPAVIRAMA 2011 South Asian Short & Documentary Film Festival.

Winner: National Award for Best Short Fiction Film,1992.

The film talks in layers about a struggling actress seeking solace in the mainstream film industry, but getting entangled in the morals and the politics of it. As the film develops, we see the actress finding the roles in her life more interesting than those given to her on the silver screen. This film was made as part of a Production Design Workshop supported by Kodak.

One of the four independent film projects Film & Video students at NID (both PG and UG) do is an advertisement film. Prior to starting their own ad film project, the students are exposed to the nitty gritties of the genre/ industry through an advertisement film workshop, conducted by a visiting professional. One such workshop was conducted by Shri Rajeev Raja, ex-National Creative Director, DDB Mudra, with the assistance of NID Film & Video faculty Shri Prahlad Gopakumar. The workshop resulted in (among other things) a 30 seconds TV commercial for Volkswagen Polo hatchback car.

FVC PLUS WITH SONAL DABRAL 2013

Sonal Dabral, an NID alumnus, started his career with Lintas India Pvt. Ltd (now Lowe) in Delhi. He spent five years at the agency and then moved to O&M Mumbai in 1989 to join Piyush Pandey, then Creative Director of the agency. Dabral spent a decade at O&M and together with Pandey, helped the agency become one of the top creative agencies in the country. During that time they won several regional, national and international awards, including Lions at Cannes and the Clios. Dabral then moved to O&M Malaysia as Executive Creative Director, followed by O&M’s Singapore office. He then returned to India to join Bates David Enterprise as Chairman India operations and Regional Creative Director for Asia Pacific. Currently he is the Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of the DDB Mudra Group.

Sonal Dabral interacted with the young guns of the FVC department at NID. He briefed them about his work and how one should approach advertisement film making, especially with reference to Public Service Advertising.

FVC PLUS WITH SHRI PRAKASH 2014 Shriprakash is an award winning independent documentary filmmaker and social activist from Ranchi, Jharkhand. Best known for his seminal anti-nuclear film “Buddha Weeps in Jadugoda� (1999) and for his relentless championship of the struggles & aspirations of local communities, Shriprakash came to NID Ahmedabad in March 2014 with the India leg of the International Uranium Film Fest. While at NID, he also interacted with the students, faculty members and staff of the Film & Video Communication department (as part of the FVC Plus lecture series).

The conversation was about the pleasures & perils of independent filmmaking, especially when the man with the camera has to choose between the haves and the have nots, between development and survival, between human need and human greed. The answer, as always, is blowing in the wind...

FVC PLUS WITH CHANDITA MUKHERJEE 2014 Chandita Mukherjee, documentary film-maker of repute, and Founder/Director of Comet Media Foundation (involved in Social & Educational media), was recently invited to NID Film & Video department to speak on her ground-breaking non-fiction TV serial called “Bharat Ki Chaap� (originally telecast on Doordarshan in 1989), on the history of science and technology in the Indian subcontinent.

Her lecture was situated within the larger context of the History of Indian Television, especially the pre-satellite times, when TV was not such an idiot box and its viewers more cerebral and attentive; when History was a rational science and not just blind faith; when debates led to discussions, not dead-ends.

(famous Cinematographer, of films like PK, Three Idiots, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Agent Vinod, Johnny Gaddaar, Ek Hasina Thi, etc), was recently with NID Film & Video students, talking about his work and the art & craft of cinematography in general. Cinema being a collaborative endeavour, Muralee emphasised (with examples from the widely popular films he has been associated with as DOP) the manner in which a good director works in tandem with his/her camera person (and other unit specialists) to sharpen and value add to the original script.

QISSAS WITH ANUP 2015 Anup Singh, Director of the internationally acclaimed & multiple awards winning Punjabi language feature film ‘Qissa’ (2013), broadly based around the incidents surrounding the Partition of India in 1947 and its immediate socially & psychologically debilitating aftermath, was recently invited by the NID Film Club and the Film & Video Communication department to introduce & screen ‘Qissa’ at NID. A lively Q & A session followed the screening.

WITH KAMAL KM 2015 Kamal KM, a 2004 FTII, Pune alumnus in Direction, and presently HOD, Direction at the Kerala Govt. run KRN National Institute of Visual Science & Arts, had a special session with Film & Video students at NID in August 2015 on Scriptwriting, especially with reference to the scripting of his 2012 feature film in Hindi called “I.D.”.

This half-hour video encapsulates the major strands of his thoughts, interspersed with relevant clips and pages from ‘I.D.’ the film and ‘I.D.’ the script.

BISWAS: DREAMING HOME was conducted by Thiruananthapuram based architect and educator Rajshree Rajmohan. The course explored, through lectures, discussions and hands-on exercises, the students’ relationship to the spaces which inhabit their memories and their dreams, and the inter-relationships therein.

2016 Villains are nothing but a projection of our other selves, the ones we are afraid of, the ones we dislike or are uncomfortable with. Villains are the people we disagree with, or have trouble reconciling to. Villains are our pet peeves, our restive rants.

Hindi cinema villains - PLTs (People Like Them) - are nothing but inverted images of people like us, who slyly enjoy the fun without experiencing the accompanying guilt, shame or regret.

Bogdan Stamatin, originally from Romania, but currently studying for his Masters in Production Design at Danmarks Designskole (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design, Copenhagen) recently spent a semester as an exchange student at the Department of Film & Video Communication, NID. POYITTU VARAM / JAAKE AATE HAIN 2015

Xenia Gauss and Santa Dimante, Fashion Communication students from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, spent a couple of months at NID Film & Video recently, as part of an educational exchange programme. The highlight of their stay in NID were the individual Public Service Advertisements they made on the broad issue of Gender. Being a masala-mix of ethnicities themselves (Russian, Latvian, Uzbek, German, etc), they took naturally to the spicy Indian food; and to India itself, despite the clichĂŠs.
