He has written for a range of magazines, including Wired, Discover, and the New York Times Magazine. This is his first book. Everyone - even the most jaded and sceptical - believes in magic. In this wonderful exploration of psychology, Matthew Hutson reveals the healing power of John Lennon's piano; the reason gamblers kiss their tickets and why admitting you have no free will staves off addiction. The 7 Laws are contagion works; similarities carry a spell; superstitions make you lucky; mind triumphs over matter; souls live on (forget death); people see people everywhere; everything happens for a reason. $19.95 Pb, ISBN 9781851689576, NZRP$24.95 Publish January 2013, 304 pages Oneworld Publications

It's the Political Economy, Stupid brings together internationally acclaimed artists and thinkers, including Slavoj Zizek, David Graeber, Judith Butler, and Brian Holmes to focus on the current economic crisis in a sustained and critical manner. What emerges is a powerful critique of the current capitalist crisis through an analytical and theoretical response and an aesthetic-cultural rejoinder. By combining artistic responses with the analysis of leading radical theorists the book expands the boundaries of critique beyond the usual discourse. It's the Political Economy, Stupid argues that it is time to push back against the dictates of the capitalist logic and, by use of both theoretical and artistic means, launch a rescue of the very notion of the social. $39.95 Pb, ISBN 9780745333694, NZRP$49.95 Publish January 2013, 144 pages Pluto With this unique format, images and text are integrated in a visually stunning bespoke production by activist designer Nole Douglas.

HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY The Philosophical life Twelve Great Thinkers and the Search for Wisdom, from Socrates to Nietzsche James Miller is a professor of politics and the chair of liberal studies at the New School for Social Research. He is the author of The Passion of Michel Foucault among other books. He lives in Manhattan, New York. We all want to know how to live. But before the good life was reduced to ten easy steps or a prescription from the doctor, philosophers offered arresting answers to the most fundamental questions about who we are and what makes for a life worth living. In The Philosophical Life, James Miller returns to this vibrant tradition with short, lively biographies of twelve famous philosophers. Socrates spent his life examining himself and the assumptions of others. His most famous student, Plato, risked his reputation to tutor a tyrant. Diogenes carried a bright lamp in broad daylight and announced he was "looking for a man." And Nietzsche tried to get to grips with the human condition before he lapsed into catatonic madness. With a flair for paradox and rich anecdote, The Philosophical Life is a book that confirms the continuing relevance of philosophy today-and explores the most urgent questions about what it means to live a good life. $24.95 Pb, ISBN 9781851689569, NZRP$29.95 Publish January 2013, 432 pages Oneworld Publications “A vivid set of philosophical tales . . . a fresh treatment of subjects who are often served up stale.” -The Economist

PHILOSOPHY

Wittgenstein's Antiphilosophy Alain Badiou teaches philosophy at the École normale supérieure and the Collège international de philosophie in Paris. In addition to several novels, plays and political essays, he has published a number of major philosophical works, including Theory of the Subject, Being and Event, Manifesto for Philosophy, and Gilles Deleuze. His recent books include The Meaning of Sarkozy, Ethics, Metapolitics, Polemics, The Communist Hypothesis, Five Lessons on Wagner, and Wittgenstein's Anti-Philosophy. Alain Badiou takes on the standard bearer of the "linguistic turn" in modern philosophy and anatomizes the "antiphilosophy" of Ludwig Wittgenstein. In the course of his interrogation of Wittgenstein's thinking, Badiou refines his own definitions of the universal truths that govern his work. Bruno Bosteels's introduction argues that a continuing dialogue with Wittgenstein is inescapable for contemporary philosophy. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844672240, NZRP$39.95 Publish January 2013, 320 pages Verso

Allies with the Infidel

Bad Girls in Britain

The Ottoman and French Alliance in the Sixteenth Century

Gender, Justice and Welfare in Britain, 1900-1950

Christine Isom-Verhaaren, University in Lisle, USA.

Pamela Cox, University of Essex, UK.

In 1543, the Ottoman fleet appeared off the coast of France to bombard and lay siege to the city of Nice. The operation came in response to a request from Francois I of France for assistance from Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent in France's struggle against Charles V, the King of Spain. This military alliance between mutual 'infidels', the Christian French King and the Muslim Sultan, aroused intense condemnation on religious grounds from the Habsburgs and their supporters as an aberration from accepted diplomacy. An alliance with 'the Turk' seemed unthinkable to many. Allies with the Infidel places the events of 1543 and the subsequent wintering of the Ottoman fleet in Toulon in the context of the power politics of the sixteenth century. Relying on contemporary Ottoman and French sources, it presents the realpolitik of diplomacy with 'infidels' in the early modern era.

This major study of the history of British 'bad girls' uses a wide range of professional, popular and personal texts to explore the experiences of girls in the twentieth-century juvenile justice system. By examining the processes leading to their definition as variously delinquent, defective or neglected, Pam Cox focuses on the complexity of their sexual and other transgressions and analyses the different possibilities for public and private reform made available to them, emphasising the crucial connections between criminal justice and charitable facilities. She shows how 'bad girls', though few in number, posed a recurring challenge to established generational and gender orders, and questions the popular contemporary belief that 'rising' delinquency among girls has been the product of late twentieth-century social changes.

HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY Beyond the Malachite Hills

Fascist Italy and the Middle East, 1933-40

A Life of Colonial Service and Business in the New Africa

Nir Arielli, Sheffield Hallam University, UK.

What hope is there for Africa? Since the heady days of decolonisation the story seems to be one of unrelenting disaster. All this has been compounded by natural disasters -including the scourge of AIDS. But there is another, less reported, story of Africa; throwing off the colonial past, gaining in pride and embracing the crucial management function; all this in the context of fruitful collaboration with Western business and, increasingly, with Asian markets. Jonathan Lawley paints a vivid and convincing picture of solid political, social and economic progress. Beyond the Malachite Hills is a remarkable testament to his long-lasting and profound involvement with this often misunderstood continent.

Under Mussolini's leadership, Fascist Italy sought to increase its influence in the Middle East. This book examines the motivations behind Italy's policy, the diverse methods the regime employed and the reasons why Italian efforts ultimately failed. By looking at the interplay between foreign, colonial, cultural and military policies, Fascist Italy and the Middle East provides a new and challenging interpretation of the ambitions and contradictions that characterized Mussolini's Italy. It analyses the ways in which the Fascist regime sought to befriend the Islamic world and looks at how Italian policies were propagated and received by Middle Eastern societies. It also uncovers for the first time the grandiose plans that were prepared in the summer of 1940 for Fascist territorial expansion in Africa and the Middle East.

In the early thirteenth century, the Church was being challenged by a confident new secular culture, associated with the growth of towns, the rise of literature and articulate laity, the development of new sciences and the creation of the first universities. The mendicant orders which developed around the charismatic figures of Saint Francis of Assisi (founder of the Franciscans) and Saint Dominic of Osma (founder of the Dominicans) confronted this challenge by encouraging preachers to go out into the world to do God's work, rather than retiring into enclosed monasteries. C.H. Lawrence here analyses the origins and growth of these orders, as well as the impact which they had upon the medieval world - in the areas of politics and education as well as religion.

Who were the men who led America's first voyages into space? Soldiers? Daredevils? The public sometimes imagined them that way: military men or hot-shot pilots without the capacity for doubt, fear, or worry. Instead, the early astronauts were something else: a new kind of 'organization man,' calm, calculating, and attuned to the politics and celebrity of the Space Race. Through archival documents, popular culture, and interviews with the astronauts themselves, the book examines the origins of a new American profession and follows it through the last Moon landing and the creation of the Space Shuttle.

Few ethical issues create as much controversies as invasive experiments on animals. Some scientists claim they are essential for combating major human disease, or detecting human toxins. Others claim the contrary, backed by thousand of patients harmed by pharmaceauticals developed using animal tests. Some claim all experiments are conducted humanely, to high scientific standards. Where, then, the truth lies? How useful are such experiments in advancing human healthcare? And do students really need to dissect or experiment on animals? Andrew Knight presents more than a decade of ground-breaking scientific research, analysis and experience to provide evidence-based answers to a key question: is animal experimentation ethically justifiable?

Europe's Long Twelfth Century

Rabies in Britain, 1830-2000

Order, Anxiety and Adaptation, 1095-1229

Dogs, Disease and Culture, 1830-1900 Neil Pemberton and Michael Worboys, University of Manchester, UK.

John D. Cotts, Whitman College, USA.

Rabies was a constant threat in Victorian Britain. It gripped the public imagination because its human form - hydrophobia - produced the worst of all possible deaths with the mind and body out of control. The narrative explores the changing understandings of rabies amongst vets, doctors, animal welfare campaigners, state officials, politicians and the public, and the struggles over methods of control. Hydrophobia was always fatal until 1885 when Louis Pasteur introduced his vaccine treatment - the world's first medical breakthrough - which we show led to conflicts between scientists and anitvivisectionists. Rabies in Britain considers how rabies was eradicated from Britain in 1902 following the controversial imposition of muzzling dogs, then kept out by first by quarantines and from 2000 by Pet Passports.

Red Gas Russia and the Origins of European Energy Dependence

Per Hรถgselius, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

$44.95 Pb ISBN 9781137293718 Publish January 2013 320 pages Palgrave Macmillan NZRP$54.95

Between 1095 and 1229, Western Europe confronted a series of alternative cultural possibilities that would fundamentally transform its social structures, its intellectual life, and its very identity. It was a period of difficult decisions and anxiety rather than a triumphant 'renaissance'. In this fresh reassessment of the twelfth century, John D. Cotts shows how new social, economic and religious options challenged Europeans to re-imagine their place in the world; provides an overview of political life and detailed examples of the original thought and religious enthusiasm of the time and presents the Crusades as the century's defining movement. This is an essential overview of a pivotal era in medieval history that arguably paved the way for a united Europe.

Christopher Read is Professor of TwentiethCentury European History at the University of Warwick, UK.

This book provides an alternative approach to analyzing Western Europe's much-debated dependence on Russian natural gas. The actual and potential consequences of this dependence have become a growing concern both in individual importing countries and at the level of the European Union. Despite the central importance of Russian natural gas exports in present-day European and Russian affairs, little attention has been paid to the political and economic decisions that paved the way for large-scale imports of Russian gas. The author investigates how and why governments, businesses, engineers and other actors sought to promote - and oppose- the establishment of an extensive East-West natural gas regime that seemed to overthrow the fundamental logic of the Cold War.

This essential introduction synthesises the wealth of new material available on the Russian Revolution into a clear overview which is ideal for beginners. Leading expert Christopher Read treats the period 1914-22 as a whole in order to contextualise and better understand the events of 1917 and their impact. $48.00 Pb ISBN 9780230239869 Publish January 2013 256 pages Palgrave Macmillan NZRP$61.00

International media coverage in the 1960s and early 1970s represented the Biafran War, in which the state of Biafra attempted to secede from the Nigerian Federation, as a grand humanitarian disaster, characterised by sustained conflict, starvation and genocide. Using interviews and newly-released archival material, Michael Gould questions this depiction, examining the role of foreign parties in the conflict and the impact of propaganda upon its international reception both during and after the war. This book seeks to answer some of the most fundamental questions surrounding the conflict, including how this avoidable conflict came about, why the war became so drawn-out and how the leadership of the opposing Generals Ojukwu, who led the Biafran revolt and Gowon, who was President of the Nigerian Federation, defined the conflict.

Nuclear Iran: Birth of an Atomic State argues that Iran’s nuclear programme and the modern history of the country itself are irretrievably linked; and only by understanding one can we understand the other. From the programme’s beginnings under the Shah of Iran, the book details the central role of the US in the birth of nuclear Iran. The author’s unique access to “the father” of Iran’s nuclear programme, as well as to key scientific personnel under the early Islamic Republic and to senior Iranian and Western negotiators, sheds new light on the uranium enrichment efforts that lie at the heart of global concerns.

Placing eighteenth-century warfare in a truly global context, Jeremy Black challenges conventional accounts and offers a reappraisal of debates in Western and Asian history. This concise, up-to-date survey assumes little prior knowledge and provides cutting-edge historical insights into a crucial period of world history.

Why It's Kicking Off Everywhere The New Global Revolutions Paul Mason is the economics editor of the BBC's flagship current affairs program Newsnight and appears frequently on BBC World News America. He has covered globalization and social justice stories from locations around the world, including Latin America, Africa and China. His book Live Working, Die Fighting was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. The world is facing a wave of uprisings, protests and revolutions: Arab dictators swept away, public spaces occupied, slum-dwellers in revolt, cyberspace buzzing with utopian dreams. Events we were told were consigned to history-democratic revolt and social revolution-are being lived by millions of people. In this compelling new book, Paul Mason explores the causes and consequences of this great unrest. From Cairo to Athens, Wall Street and Westminster to Manila, Mason goes in search of the changes in society, technology and human behaviour that have propelled a generation onto the streets in search of social justice. In a narrative that blends historical insight with first-person reportage, Mason shines a light on these new forms of activism, from the vast, agile networks of cyberprotest to the culture wars and tent camps of the #occupy movement. The events, says Mason, reflect the expanding power of the individual and call for new political alternatives to elite rule and global poverty. $24.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844670284, NZRP$32.95 Publish January 2013, 244 pages Verso

In this innovative new work, Steele shows how we might recognize how an alternative form of accountability in global politics has been present for some time, and that, furthermore, this form's continued presence remains one of the most politically powerful, if not endurable, possibilities for resistance in the near future. This book argues that the physical and visually shocking outcomes of violence found on the bodies of humans, as well as the buildings and landscapes which surround us, specifically the scars they leave behind, remain one of our most compelling forms of accountability. Emphasizing the importance of the space and ‘time' of scars, the book illustrates how an alternative form of accountability in the scar can be a useful, disruptive, spontaneous, but also creative practice to challenge the discourses of violence which remain with us today.

The Horn of Africa, comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia, is the most conflict-ridden region in Africa. This book explores the origins and impact of these conflicts at both a intra-state and interstate level and the insecurity they create. The contributors show how regional and international interventions have compounded pre-existing tensions and have been driven by competing national interests linked to the 'war on terror' and acts of piracy off the coast of Somalia. The Horn of Africa outlines proposals for multidimensional mechanisms for conflict resolution in the region. Issues of border demarcation, democratic deficit, crises of nation and state building, and the roles of political actors and traditional authorities are all clearly analysed. Quantity

Paths to Civil Society or State-Building?

The Expectations Trap and Its Threat to Democracy Stephen K. Medvic, Franklin & Marshall College, USA.

From the perspective of the Western Balkans today, the EU looks and acts like a development agency with a spectacularly broad brief and very deep pockets. Yet until the end of the 20th century, external relations and foreign policy were minor aspects of EU activity. How and why has the role of the EU changed so dramatically and what does this reveal about the future development of the Balkan states? Europe's Balkan Dilemma offers the first comprehensive analysis of the impact of EU assistance and intervention in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and newly independent Kosovo. In this important new book Adam Fagan places the fundamental question of what has been achieved through the EU's increased involvement in the region in the context of the EU's ambitions in global security and conflict management beyond the Balkan states.

From jokes on late-night TV talk shows to radio show rants and from public opinion polls to ubiquitous conventional wisdom-politicians are among the most despised professional class in modern society. Stephen K. Medvic convincingly argues to the masses that this blanket condemnation of politicians is both unfair and unwarranted. Medvic explains how cognitive biases in the way people reason often lead us to draw unjustified conclusions of politicians in general based on the malfeasance of some. He also demonstrates the necessity of ambition, the utility of politics for resolving conflicts peacefully, and the value of ideology in framing political choices. In the end, citizens must learn to tolerate the inherent messiness of politics as the only viable alternative to violent conflict. Quantity

This book explores some of the most topical issues around migration and integration in relation to Britain. It examines people smuggling as well as the elite labour migration that has become a feature of Britain. It explores the acquisition and mobility of expertise in global corporate labour markets, and how sectors of British higher education fit into global student and academic markets. At the same time it examines aspects of the concepts of social capital, social cohesion and Britishness. Ethnic capital and ethnic penalties are identified and their links to religion and segregation displayed and it is shown how religion, in the form of aspects of Muslim behavior, is becoming a boundary of Britishness at a time when significant sections of the ethnic majority evinces scepticism about multiculturalism.

Each year, Israel's young men and women are drafted into compulsory military service and are required to engage directly in the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. So, how does Israel's education system prepare its young people for this? How is Palestine, and the Palestinians against whom these young Israelis will potentially be required to use force, portrayed in the school system? Nurit Peled-Elhanan argues that the textbooks used in the school system are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, and that they play a part in priming Israeli children for military service. She analyzes the presentation of images, maps, layouts and use of language in History, Geography and Civic Studies textbooks, and reveals how the books might be seen to marginalize Palestinians, legitimize Israeli military action and reinforce Jewish-Israeli territorial identity. In Only One Thing Can Save Us, acclaimed author Thomas Geoghegan asserts that only a new kind of labor movement can help the country switch course toward a future that is fair and prosperous for all Americans. We need a revived labor movement, he explains, not only to stop the drop in wages, health insurance, and pensions over the past thirty years, but also to make the American economy more competitive by placing real limits on returns to our bloated financial sector; pushing for government support for health care and pensions; and promoting a new model of corporate governance. Geoghegan shows how a revitalized labor movement can help get the country out of debt-private debt, government debt, and most of all trade debt.

This book is a unique in-depth investigation into working-class Loyalism in Northern Ireland as represented by the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), the Red Hand Commandos (RHC) and their allies. Novosel argues that these groups, seen as implacable enemies by Republicans and the Left, did develop a political analysis of the Northern Ireland conflict in the 1970s which involved a compromise peace with all political parties and warring factions - something that historians and writers have largely ignored. This is the first study to focus not on the violent actions of the UVF/RHC but on their political vision and programme which included the potential for a viable peace in Northern Ireland based on compromise with all shades of opinion, including the Irish Republican Army.

In Yemen Divided, Middle East expert Noel Brehony tells for the first time the comprehensive history of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY). He explains the power politics that came to form a communist republic a few hundred miles from the holiest site in Islam, and the process and conflicts that led to Yemeni unification in 1990. The impact of PDRY is still felt today as unrest continues to escalate across the south. Yemen Divided is an important book for anyone wanting to understand why Yemen, sensitive neighbour of Saudi Arabia and strategically vital to Middle East security, has veered towards massive instability.

Against the background of recent technological developments, Gorz's major new book explores the political agendas facing both right and left in the midst of the transformations of the nature of work and the structure of the workforce. In this major new book, Andre Gorz expands on the political implications of his prescient and influential Paths to Paradise and Critique of Economic Reason. Against the background of technological developments which have transformed the nature of work and the structure of the workforce, Gorz explores the new political agendas facing both left and right. Freudianism is a major icon in the history of ideas, independently rich and suggestive today both for psychoanalysis and for theories of language. Volosinov went to the root of Freud's theory and method, arguing that what is for him the central concept of psychoanalysis, "the unconscious," was a fiction. He argued that the phenomena that were taken by Freud as evidence for "the unconscious" constituted instead an aspect of "the conscious," albeit one with a person's "official conscious." For Volosinov, "the conscious" was a monologue, a use of language, "inner speech" as he called it. As such, the conscious participated in all of the properties of language, particularly, for Volosinov, its social essence. This type of argumentation stood behind Volosinov's charge that Freudianism presented humans in an inherently false, individualistic, asocial, and a historical setting.

An Essay on the Understanding of Evil

Simon Critchley is Hans Jonas Professor at the New School for Social Research, and a professor of philosophy at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. His many books include Infinitely Demanding, Ethics-Politics-Subjectivity and The Book of Dead Philosophers.

Alain Badiou teaches philosophy at the École normale supérieure and the Collège international de philosophie in Paris. Feuerbach's departure from the traditional philosophy of Hegel opened the door for generations of radical philosophical thought. His philosophy has long been acknowledged as the influence for much of Marx's early writings. Feuerbach's contemporaneity as an existentialist, humanist, and atheist is clearly presented, and the reader can readily grasp the liberating influence of this too-long neglected philosopher. Professor Zawar Hanfi has written an excellent introduction establishing Feuerbach's environment, importance, and relevance and his translations surpass most previous Feuerbach translators.

One of the most powerful voices in contemporary French philosophy explodes the facile assumptions behind the recent ethical turn. Alain Badiou shows how our prevailing ethical principles serve ultimately to reinforce an ideology of the status quo and fail to provide a framework for an effective understanding of the concept of evil. $22.95 Pb

A new political ethics that confronts the injustices of liberal democracy. The clearest, boldest and most systematic statement of Simon Critchley's influential views on philosophy, ethics, and politics, Infinitely Demanding identifies a massive political disappointment at the heart of liberal democracy. Arguing that what is called for is an ethics of commitment that can inform a radical politics, Critchley considers the possibility of political subjectivity and action after Marx and Marxism, taking in the work of Kant, Levinas, Badiou and Lacan. Infinitely Demanding culminates in an argument for anarchism as an ethical practice and a remotivating means of political organization. Quantity

Although widely attacked in its time, Marxism and Philosophy has attained a place among the most important works of twentieth-century Marxist theory, and continues to merit critical reappraisal from scholars and activists today.

First, what is the rationality of the economic systems that appear and disappear throughout history-in other words, what is their hidden logic and the underlying necessity for them to exist, or to have existed? Second, what are the conditions for a rational understanding of these systems-in other words, for a fully developed comparative economic science? The author, being a Marxist, sought the answers, as he writes, ‘not in philosophy or by philosophical means, but in and through examining the knowledge accumulated by the sciences.' The stages of his journey from philosophy to economics and then to anthropology are indicated by the divisions of his book.

Baudrillard sees the power of the terrorists as lying in the symbolism of slaughter-not merely the reality of death, but in a sacrifice that challenges the whole system. Where previously the old revolutionary sought to conduct a struggle between real forces in the context of ideology and politics, the new terrorist mounts a powerful symbolic challenge which, when combined with high-tech resources, constitutes an unprecedented assault on an oversophisticated and vulnerable West. The extraordinary revival of discussions of modernity, as well as of the new theories of artistic modernism, demands attention in its own right. It seems clear that the (provisional) disappearance of alternatives to capitalism plays its part in the universal attempt to revive modernity as a social ideal. Yet the paradoces of the concept illustrate its legitimate history and suggest some rules for avoiding its misuse as well. In this major new interpretation of the problematic, Jameson concludes that both concepts are tainted, but nonetheless yield clues as to the nature of the phenomena they purpoted to theorize. His judicious and vigilant probing of both terms - which can probably not be banished at this late date - helps us clarify our present political and artistic situations.

Sex-Pol Essays, 1929-1934

Welcome to the Desert of the Real

Wilhelm Reich

Slavoj Žižek, University of London, UK.

This volume contains the first complete translations of Wilhelm Reich's writings from his Marxist period. Reich, who died in 1957, had a career with a single goal: to find ways of relieving human suffering. And the same curiosity and courage that led him from medical school to join the early pioneers of Freudian psychoanalysis, and then to some of the most controversial work of this century-his development of the theory of the orgone-led him also, at one period of his life, to become a radical socialist. The renewed interest in Reich's Marxist writings, and particularly in his notions about sexual and political liberation, follows the radical critiques of Herbert Marcuse, Frantz Fanon and Paul Goodman, the political protest movements toward personal liberation in the present decade.

Liberals and conservatives proclaim the end of the American holiday from history. Now the easy games are over; one should take sides. Zizek argues this is precisely the temptation to be resisted. In such moments of apparently clear choices, the real alternatives are most hidden. Welcome to the Desert of the Real steps back, complicating the choices imposed on us. It proposes that global capitalism is fundamentalist and that America was complicit in the rise of Muslim fundamentalism. It points to our dreaming about the catastrophe in numerous disaster movies before it happened, and explores the irony that the tragedy has been used to legitimize torture. Last but not least it analyzes the fiasco of the predominant leftist response to the events.

‘If your acquaintance with the food of Turkey comes from eating it in the country’s capital, you might be surprised at the diversity of recipes in this book, first published 15 years ago and now reissued in paperback. It covers dishes associated with the Ottoman empire, such as “ladies’ thighs” and “ladies’ navels” (yes, those Ottoman kitchens, remarks the author, had a spasm of debauchery). But many of the more interesting dishes are from those regions beyond Istanbul or less heavily influenced by the empire, such as spicy caramelised pumpkin pilaf from Armenia, or figs scented with tea and bay leaves, from the eastern Black Sea coast, a tea-growing region. A landmark 2011 Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Plata, has opened an unexpected escape route from this trap of "tough on crime" politics and points toward values that could restore legitimate order to American prisons and ultimately lead to the dismantling of "mass incarceration." The author argues that, much like the epic school segregation cases of the last century, this new case represents a major breakthrough in jurisprudence. Exposing the priority of politics over rational penal policyand debunking the premise that these policies are necessary for public safety-this perceptive and groundbreaking book urges us to seize the opportunity to replace mass incarceration with a system anchored in the preservation of human dignity.

In this landmark work, esteemed theologian Paul F. Knitter explains the unique path that he took to overcome his doubts, becoming a stronger Christian in the process. Honest and unflinching, Without Buddha I Could not be a Christian narrates each spiritual dilemma that Knitter has struggled with and explains how a Buddhist worldview has allowed him to resolve each one. From the ‘petitioning' nature of Christian prayer to how Christianity views life after death, Knitter argues that a Buddhist standpoint can help inspire a more person-centred conception of Christianity, where individual religious experience comes first, and liturgy and tradition second. Moving and revolutionary, this edition comes with a new postscript in which Professor Knitter reflects on and re-evaluates his position as a double-belonger.

Recent decades have witnessed a worldwide change in social and economic relations. Mainstream development thinking and practice attribute them to the irresistible forces of progressive free market policies. They are content to believe that the pain and misery of poverty, and the degradation of people's lives and livelihoods, is the price of admission into the new world order. However, waged and unwaged workers, the self-employed poor, small-scale or landless peasant farmers, and others in the popular sectors have proven themselves to be disposed to and very able to resist the machinations of imperial power and corporate elites. This book tells the story of popular resistance in its multiple forms with and against the new post-neoliberal regimes and of the changing social conditions in an era of globalization and worldwide crisis.

“[Wark’s] book is a grand gesture of reciprocity, an attempt to match and build on the ‘uncanceled gift’ of the [Situationist International]. Certain motifs – pinball, starlings, Tintomara’s dance, potlatch, and Johan Huizinga’s Homo Ludens (1938) – show how playfulness and elaboration were integral to the SI, and necessary to understand them now. The dust jacket, which unfolds to reveal an illustrated guide to the key figures of the movement, is another example of this lucidity… Personalities are constructed quickly and efficiently. And as the values, interests and lifestyles of individuals constantly change and evolve in space and time, not all brands are able to manage and effectively maintain their capacity to stay relevant, and even more than this -indispensable. Instead of moving us toward economic recovery, the measures being taken are digging us into a deeper hole. But, Rubin asks, is it all that bad?

This book will shape the debate on how to save the military from itself. The first part recognizes, indeed celebrates, what the military has done well in attracting and developing leadership talent. The book then examines the causes and consequences of the modern military's stifling personnel system, with a close look at strategic failures in Iraq and Afghanistan. The book also reports a new survey of active duty officers (done by the author) that reports what is driving the best and brightest to leave the service in frustration. Solutions round out the book, grounded in an economic emphasis on market forces.

However, manufacturing can play an important strategic role. This book helps managers consider the strategic roles their operations can play and to provide guidance as to what actions can be taken.

This book, written by experts in the field of family business, shows the family members how to confront the problems and how to create solutions, including acknowledging that change needs to happen class, building a formal structure around the business, strengthening both personal and professional relationships, determining who has a role in the family business (spouses, children), and creating a process to address conflict.

In American Puppet Modernism, Bell reveals how understanding puppetry is integral to understanding the nature of the material world in performance and in turn argues that the material world in performance is integral as a means of communication. Insightfully describing and analyzing different types of object performance from the 1860s to 2007, Bell uses the common focus on material objects in performance to link the worlds of traditional puppetry, mechanized image performance, indigenous rituals, avant-garde theater, political street performance, advertising, Kustom Kulture, art cars, and film and television. Ealing Revisited

Little Madnesses

Mark Duguid, BFI National Archive; Melanie Williams and Keith M. Johnston, both of University of East Anglia, UK; and Lee Freeman, University of Hull, UK.

Winnicot, Transitional Phenomena and Cultural Experience

Ealing Revisited offers a new look at the films and history of Ealing Studios, best known as the producer of famous film comedies such as The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and The Ladykillers (1955). Yet there is more to Ealing Studios than those famous comedies, and this book draws together some of the leading experts on Ealing and British cinema to explore the history of Britain's best loved film studio. The book presents a closer look at the known and unknown elements of Ealing, its films and their sometimes unsung creators. This new approach explores what has gone unexplored, or unspoken, in popular and academic histories of the studio, and considers the impact that Ealing has had on British cinema and society from the 1930s to the present day.

Little madnesses are our most deeply felt enthusiasms, investments and attachments in the sphere of culture. The term was coined by the child psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. Here, in original chapters, writers, artists, scholars develop and revitalize cultural theory by exploring the idea of transitional phenomena and its potential to extend and deepen our understanding of cultural experience in mental and social life. Exploring cult films, computer use, installation art, trips to the cinema, museums and galleries, they focus on the importance of space, place, and boundaries in cultural experience; on how we can negotiate the use of media, as well as cultural identity; and consider the aesthetic and creative aspects of cultural experience.

Fetishism and Curiosity contains writings which range from analyses of Xala, Citizen Kane, and Blue Velvet to an extended engagement with the work of American Indian artist Jimmie Durham and the feminist photographer Cindy Sherman. The essays explore the concept of fetishism as developed by Marx and Freud, and how it relates to the ways in which artistic texts work. Laura Mulvey here returns to some of the knottier issues in contemporary cultural theory, especially the links between looking, fantasy and theorisation, on the one hand, and the processes of historical change on the other.

This book is a close study of around forty contemporary vampire films, beginning in 1992 with Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and Fran Rubel Kuzui's Buffy the Vampire Slayer- films that seemed for a moment to take vampire cinema in completely opposite directions. It then examines what happened after these two films, with a series of exhilarating readings of vampire films from Sweden, Russia, North America and Mexico, Japan, South Korea, France, New Zealand and Australia. New Vampire Cinema looks at recent vampire films as a genre, and asks what is at stake when the cinematic vampire and the modern world are made to encounter each other. It is a fascinating examination of a strand of cinema that is simultaneously exhausted and vibrant, inauthentic and 'original', insubstantial and self-sustaining.

The Films of Claire Denis

Performing Site-Specific Theatre

Intimacy on the Border

Politics, Place, Practice

Marjorie Vecchio (Ed), Foreword by Wim Wenders.

Anna Birch, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, UK and Joanne Tompkins, University of Queensland, Australia.

The Films of Claire Denis, one of the most challenging and respected of contemporary filmmakers, probe the psyche of global citizenship, tracing the borderlines of family, desire, nationality and power. With subtlety, depth and at times minimalism and abstraction, her films - including Chocolat, Beau Travail and White Material - explore connections between national experience and individual circumstance, visualizing the complications of such dualities. International contributors explore the themes she addresses in her films, such as kinship and landscape, Neo-Colonialism and New French Extremity. Original interviews with an editor, actor and two composers most familiar with the working style of Denis, and with Denis herself, also reveal fresh facets of this intrepid filmmaker.

By re-assessing this contemporary practice, the book investigates the nature of the relationship between 'site' and 'performance.' Site-specific performance operates differently from performance that takes place within a theatre venue because it seeks to match form and content (and place and space) more finely than does theatre that takes place inside conventional venues. The contributions in the book from leading theorists and practitioners demonstrate how site-specific performance extends theatre's potential engagement with its geographical and political communities, and cover an exceptional range of innovative performance practices.

This lively book proposes that the feminist movement is alive and kicking, still as engaged with the concerns and ways of seeing as it was in the 1960s, '70s and '80s; still demanding its political place. The book offers a timely contribution to current debates about lived and imagined feminism today. The contributors take a fresh look at feminist critiques and methodologies, recalling the power of past feminist interventions, as well as presenting a new call for future initiatives in media and cultural studies. They revisit major feminist areas, investigating representational issues, those of agency and narrative, media forms and formats, and the traditional boundaries of the public and the private. What emerges is a real intervention into media and cultural studies in terms of how we understand them today.

Forty years after it was first broadcast on ITV, The World at War remains the most influential and renowned history programme ever produced by British television. Taylor Downing takes a critical look at The World at War, exploring, among other things: the style of the series; the ethos of the series to tell the story of ordinary people caught up in the war rather than a story of military campaigns told by generals and admirals; the many claims made at the time about the accurate use of black and white and colour archive film in the series; the contested claims that the series is "definitive"; and its legacy for Television History. Downing's fascinating study includes interviews with the series producer, Jeremy Isaacs, and the other programme makers and researchers, as well as original research gathered from the archives of Thames Television.

These 12 titles each have a specially commissioned cover produced by a successful artist, each using a different method. Chloe Giordano sewed the Yellow Brick Road onto a piece of hand-dyed calico to create the cover for Salman Rushdie’s The Wizard of Oz; the cover for Vertigo was made using linocut by Nick Morley; and comic illustrator Paul Hope drew the cover image for Blade Runner.

Walsh argues that there are many links between theatre and therapy when considering actor training, theatre in therapeutic contexts, and contemporary theatre and performance. He draws on a range of examples that include the drama of Sarah Kane, the method acting of Daniel Day Lewis and performances by Ruby Wax and David Hoyle.

Bleak House is one of Charles Dickens's darker works: a vision of London as the polluted, diseased heart of an industrialising nation. Christine Geraghty's revealing study traces the double narrative in which the youthful protagonists grow into adulthood while the doomed Lady Dedlock is hunted to death in a tele-noir adaptation of the British novel's first detective story. She examines how the different styles of acting relate to Dickens's own vivid characterisation, taking issue with Davies's attitude to Dickens's most complex heroine, Esther Summerson. She explores the series' settings, including a London styled as a soap-opera set, and the great country houses where secrets are kept under wrap. And, using illustrations from the novel, she looks at how the traditional Dickensian 'pictures' were innovatively combined with HD visuals to powerful effect.

In the first study of Latino/a literature to systematically examine the post-Sixties generation of writers, this book challenges the ways that Latino/a literary studies imagines the relationship of art, politics and the market. Dalleo and Machado Sáez engage with the major critics from the field to dispute the consensus view of Latino/a literature from the 1960s as politically committed and resistant to the market versus the literature of the 1990s as apolitical and assimilationist due to its commodification. This study argues that postSixties writers Pedro Pietri, Ernesto Quiñonez, Abraham Rodriguez, Junot Díaz, Angie Cruz, Cristina Garcia and Julia Alvarez have not abandoned politics, but are imagining creative strategies for revitalizing progressive thought through the market.

This collection has been conceived with the aim of demonstrating the logic and significance of his work for an English-language readership. Studies of Kafka and Brecht respectively open and close the volume, which includes incisive studies of contemporary poetry and fiction in Brazil. The centerpiece is the hitherto untranslated Two Girls, which brings together two strongly contrasting narratives of girls' lives-one a classic novel, the other an adolescent's diary-to substantiate the crucial concept of objective form. With key reflections on theory and method and an illuminating account of the general historical importance of his exemplary Brazilian novelist, Machado de Assis, Two Girls confirms the international significance of Schwarz's critical achievement.

On the eve of his fortieth birthday, Gary Marcus decided to fulfil a dream and learn to play the guitar. He had tried many times before - failing, miserably. This time, he decided to use the tools of his ‘trade' as a cognitive scientist to see if he might succeed. In a quest that takes him from Suzuki lessons to the feet of the guitar gods, Marcus discovers how to practise efficiently and how to find the right teacher, no matter what you're learning; what middle-aged brains do better than teen-aged ones (witnessed through his first band, Rush Hour); how to manage stage fright; and much more. He also brings insight into the question, Is the pursuit of a passion reward enough? A groundbreaking look at the allure of music, Marcus's journey is also an empowering tale of the mind's ability to grow throughout life.

MACMILLAN ART PUBLISHING

Power + Colour

New Painting from the Corrigan Collection of 21st Century Aboriginal Art Jane Raffan. The enthralling power and colour of Aboriginal painting of Tjukurpa (Law) and country has brought Aboriginal art to the forefront of contemporary art practice in Australia. Aboriginal art has also played an important role in the formulation of Indigenous Land Rights debates and Native Title Jurisprudence. 2012 marks the twentieth anniversary of the High Court of Australia’s decision in Mabo, which overturned the British doctrine of terra nullius (empty land) – the false premise on which the colony was founded – and forever changed the legal landscape for Indigenous rights. The thesis of Power + Colour: New Painting from the Corrigan Collection of 21st Century Aboriginal Art charts the history of Aboriginal art’s impact on Australian law, and explores the inextricable nexus of Aboriginal law and sense of self – an entirety that is inseparable from country. And, of course, Power + Colour is about strikingly beautiful contemporary paintings. Showcasing 129 works of art by 76 artists working across more than 25 communities nation-wide, this resplendent book exemplifies the diversity of expression within Aboriginal contemporary painting, and reveals, in nuance and detail, the breadth and depth of Aboriginal connectedness to country. $125.00 Hb, ISBN 9781921394744, NZRP$165.00 Published October 2012, 368 pages Macmillan Art Publishing Quantity
