30 Years

Palatine Park District Celebrates of Arts Programming in the Community

In 1988,

Palatine Park District held the grand opening of the then newly constructed Community Park Amphitheater, which would become the home for free summer outdoor entertainment for the community.

While the arts have been prevalent in Palatine for well over three decades, 2017 is a milestone worthy of pause and recognition as it marks the 30th annual Sounds of Summer Concert Series, which has synchronized its anniversary year with both the formation of Palatine Children’s Chorus and the 30th annual Palatine Dance Spring Recital.

PALATINE CHILDREN’S CHORUS–EST. 1987 While working as an Early Childhood music instructor at Palatine Park District, Judy Meyer Hays founded the Palatine Children’s Chorus offering the first session in the fall of that year for children in grades 4–6. In the three decades since, the children’s chorus has grown from one to six classes per session offering choral music education for students age 4–18.

“When I started in 1994, the Chorus was going strong with 30–40 singers,” said Diane Ramsden, former Palatine Children’s Chorus Managing Director. “Susan Falbo had just taken over as Artistic Director for Hays, and she had a bigger vision for the chorus. Falbo wanted to focus on teaching music and arrangements that challenged students with the goal of taking the chorus on a tour.”

In 1997, a decade after its formation, the Chorus took its first tour to the Niagara International Music Festival in Niagara Falls, Canada. Through connections made at the music festival, the Chorus was invited to perform with the National Children’s Choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Palatine Children’s Chorus has gone on fourteen tours, domestic and international, in its thirty years and most recently traveled to Ireland in July 2016.

PALATINE DANCE SPRING RECITAL–EST. 1988 Palatine Park District’s dance program held its first spring dance recital at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center on a Thursday evening in June of 1988. Three 18-week classes were offered; two ballet & tap for ages 7–11 and one jazz class for ages 12–18. In the years since, the program has expanded to include poms, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, modern, multicultural, musical theatre, and more for ages 5–18.

“This milestone is a reflection of the quality, integrity, and hard work put in by the staff, dancers, and dance families combined,” said Dance Coordinator Becky Lugovsky. “Palatine Dance has stood the test of time by fusing fresh choreography

and artistic approaches with classical technique, positive educational feedback, and family-friendly performances.”

In 2000, the program introduced a Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Company that was later renamed Palatine Dance Company in 2001.

The goal of the company was to focus on technique, unique choreography, camaraderie, and personal attention. Auditions for the company are still offered annually and consist of seven areas of concentration.

Lugovsky stated, “This program has grown to encompass new classes that challenge our dancers and provide them with the tools they need to become part of high school poms and dance teams and to gain acceptance into university dance programs.”

SOUNDS OF SUMMER CONCERT SERIES–EST. 1988 The inaugural concert series took place in the summer of 1988 at the grand opening of the Community Park Amphitheater. The venue was later renamed in 2002 to Fred P. Hall Amphitheater in recognition of former Executive Director Hall’s 31 years of dedicated service.

“Palatine Park District has been involved in the arts a lot longer than 30 years,” said Fred Hall. “We got very involved with community theatre with the purchase of Cutting Hall in ‘77, and prior to that the District made significant efforts to support the Palatine Village Band—now Palatine Concert Band.” Palatine Concert Band presents 2–3 performances each Sounds of Summer season and has done so since its inaugural event. Palatine Park District continues to support Palatine Concert Band financially today, and also provides year-round storage, rehearsal, and performance space.

Following the purchase of Towne Square in 1997, Friday Lunch Special concerts were moved from the Amphitheater to Towne Square in the summer of 2000. As a further addition to the summer concert series, former Cultural Arts Coordinator Carol Lange developed the 4th Thursday Concerts at Towne Square in 2009 featuring performances by local artists.

Today, the Sounds of Summer Concert Series is made up of Main Stage Concerts at Fred P. Hall Amphitheater, and Towne Square Spotlight and Friday Family Picnic performances at Towne Square. On Wednesday, June 7, Sounds of Summer will kick-off its 30th annual concert series with a line-up of eighteen performances. Allegro Community Chorus will make their Main Stage Concert debut this summer, along with the return of several resident favorites including Barefoot Hawaiians, American English, and 7th Heaven.

Performance Venues

Palatine Park District is proud to support the arts in the Palatine community by presenting summer concerts, classes, events, and programs at several venues located throughout town.

TOWNE SQUARE (est. 1996) • 150 W. Palatine Road, Palatine

Development of an urban park in the historic downtown area of Palatine was a goal of both Palatine Park District and the Village of Palatine, so this lovely parcel of land was purchased in 1996.

With grant assistance and a great deal of public support, the Downtown Park Site Development Committee was formed. The committee took on the responsibility of guiding the park’s future development. Working closely with Palatine Park District staff, this committee reviewed and revised plans and ideas for the park. Towne Square provides a beautiful space for recreational and festival activities including the Friday Family Picnic Series, Towne Square Spotlight Series, and the Village of Palatine’s annual Street Fest event.

Palatine to pursue a teaching career, and six years later he was admitted to the Illinois State Bar. He went on to become Master of Chancery of the Circuit Court of Cook County and was a member of the Cook County Board of Education for nine years. When the curtains first opened on the Cutting Hall stage on September 15, 1928, the theater’s appearance was similar to today. The crosswork of beams was hand decorated by Gustave Bandt, one of four artists in the world who did this specialized work. The stage curtain displayed the P.H.S. monogram on a purple and gold drape. During the course of the year, the Park District utilizes Cutting Hall for performances by community theater groups, performing arts series for children, the Palatine Concert Band, and Park District programs including theater, dance, and the Palatine Children’s Chorus. Cutting Hall offers residents an opportunity to share their talents and resources in the performing arts. The Park District is proud to offer this lively example of the rich arts heritage which is found in our area.

Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center is a unique facility owned and operated by Palatine Park District. In 1977, the Park District purchased the former Palatine High School’s Cutting Hall Auditorium. The Park District’s intentions were to restore and preserve Cutting Hall so that area residents could enjoy and participate in amateur and professional programs in their own community. The 430-seat auditorium is named after the first principal of Palatine High School, Mr. Charles Cutting. He was born in Highgate Springs, Vermont, on March 1, 1854. He received his early education in Minnesota and graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. In 1874, he came to

The Community Park Amphitheater was opened in June of 1988. Since that time, appreciative audience members from all over the northwest suburbs have claimed a patch of grass with picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs to enjoy a full series of Wednesday and Friday evening concerts. In a few short years the Amphitheater quickly became an invaluable entertainment facility in our area. In April 2002 the Palatine Park District Board of Commissioners renamed the Amphitheater the Fred P. Hall Amphitheater in recognition of former Executive Director Fred P. Hall’s 31 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Palatine.

Since its grand opening, the Amphitheater stage has played host to a tremendous variety of artists and entertainment groups including such local favorites as American English, 7th Heaven, Palatine Concert Band, the Symphonic Pops Orchestra, Tom Chapin, and the Buckinghams. Because of its location in Palatine, the Fred P. Hall Amphitheater is the ideal spot for our residents and neighbors to enjoy quality live entertainment at no cost.

HARPER COLLEGE JAZZ LAB BAND Harper College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ken Spurr, is a large Jazz Combo that gives students the freedom to learn and improvise while performing a great jazz repertory. Backpacks, Blessings and Barbecue at the Bandshell Fred P. Hall Amphitheater

Sunday, August 13 10:45 a.m. Worship 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. BBQ and Fun Community worship with Immanuel’s Praise band, a “special blessing,” and a barbecue for all. Students and educators are encouraged to bring along their backpacks, totes, or briefcases to be blessed. K-9 Comfort Dogs from Lutheran Church Charities will be available for petting and hugs! This event is open to the entire community and all ages!

The worship and fun will take place at the Fred P. Hall Amphitheater, 262 E. Palatine Road.

Our state-licensed preschool for children ages 3–5 provides a warm, accepting environment where learning is fun. Experienced teachers offer a variety of developmentally appropriate activities designed to help children learn and grow socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. The curriculum includes prekindergarten skills, art, music, science, large and small motor development, and imaginative play. Children must be completely toilet trained and self-sufficient in the bathroom (no diapers or pull-ups) to attend preschool.

The Special 20s are a Chicago based band specializing in Chicago Blues, West Coast Swing, and 50s Rock n’ Roll. They are a 5-piece standard Chicago Blues band with harmonica, guitar, piano, drums, and bass. The 20s studied the early Blues and the great players, including Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Big Walter, Junior Wells, Otis Span, Howlin’ Wolf, and George Smith.

Join the Sounds of Summer Encore Circle and keep the music playing all summer long! Each summer, Palatine Park District is proud to offer free outdoor entertainment at the Fred P. Hall Amphitheater and Towne Square. In order to continue this popular free series of music offerings, an annual membership program has been launched to allow patrons to support the music!

Donors contributing $25 or more will receive a one year membership in The Encore Circle, including recognition for their support this year in our 2018 Sounds of Summer program book, the opportunity to vote on 2018 donation gift items, and participation in an entertainment survey to assist with the selection of next summer’s bands. Donations will help enhance the quality of free entertainment provided and support the ongoing growth of our annual concert series.

SUSANNAH’S GIFT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Susannah Kist through the Palatine Park Foundation. This program assists Palatine Park District residents or groups who need financial assistance to participate in Palatine Park District cultural arts activities. Susannah Kist taught theater, music and craft classes for the Palatine Park District for 16 years. She lost her battle with breast cancer on December 4, 2009. Susannah wanted everyone to enjoy the arts right here in Palatine.

Donations are accepted year-round, in any amount.

You can make a lasting gift to the arts by participating in the Save Me a Seat program. A donation of $300 will name a seat on the main floor of the auditorium at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center. A $150 donation will name a seat in the balcony. Recognition of your commitment to the arts offers a rare opportunity to provide for a lifetime of performances.

By naming a seat, you can create a lasting tribute to honor a personal milestone, an anniversary, a loved one, a family member or friend, a new baby, a company or organization, or anything or anyone important to you.
