The Friends Purchase New Library Van We have brand-new wheels, courtesy of the Friends of the Palatine Library! The Friends generously donated the funds to purchase our new 2017 Ford Transit delivery van. Serving over 15 square miles of our District, the van transports materials

and other resources to and from our two Branches and the Main Library daily. The previous van, also funded by the Friends, served the Library for over 12 years. Look for the new van around town this summer. Thank you, Friends!

Donations of books, CDs, DVDs, and related items are gratefully accepted. Thank you! All proceeds from the sales benefit the Library. The Friends donate funds to the Library for Summer Reading t-shirts and tote bags, Winter Reading Program items, and other projects which have included furniture, new collections, drawing prizes, and more. We are looking for more volunteers! Single or family membership is $10 per year to join the Friends. With your membership, you will make a difference, and have free entry on Friday night for each sale during the term of your membership. Growing with Our Community On Friday, April 28, the Board of Library Trustees hosted an afterhours Community Connection Event with the purpose of continuing to build relationships between the Library and the community. Guests included elected officials, educators, and representatives from nonprofit and community organizations. Director Anthony Auston presented information about the current and future state of the Library, and guests were given a tour of the facility by Trustees and staff to learn more about the Library and services offered. Some key points of the discussion included: the role of the Library as a vital and growing community center; how staff is tailoring programs, classes, and collections to meet the changing needs of our users; and the challenges and opportunities of balancing these demands with an aging building and limited resources. When asked what was learned from the event, Colleen Mullins, District 15 Literacy Coordinator commented, “For adult learners and students, I am overwhelmed how much is available [at the Library] and how useful it is in today’s world!”

Summer Care Kit Supply Drive

Care Kit Creation

Palatine Library is collecting care kit supplies for JOURNEYS: first-aid kit supplies, socks, bottles of water, snacks, travel-size toiletries, sunblock, lip balm, etc. Bring your items to the Main Library lobby, and we will deliver the care kits to JOURNEYS.

Help us show kindness to those in need. Drop in to make uplifting cards and to help assemble care kits for JOURNEYS’ clients/guests. Learn more about JOURNEYS through a brief presentation at the beginning of the program. All supplies provided. Drop in.

JOURNEYS ǀ The Road Home is a nonprofit agency that provides shelter, social services, and housing to the homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless in 37 towns in north/northwest suburban Cook County. The agency consists of the PADS Shelter Program, the HOPE Center Supportive Services Program, and the Pathways Housing Readiness Program, focusing on intervention and assistance for those in need. Another Step in Supporting the Arts in Our Community! More than 13 years ago, The Chicago Area District Chapter 103 of The Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) needed a well-lit, clean, professional space with tables, chairs, projection equipment, and screen—at a very reasonable price. They chose Palatine Library, and continue to gather in a meeting room monthly, for workshops, art viewings, supplier presentations, pencil technique discussions, and art critiques. “The staff at the Library is very helpful,” says artist member, Beth Daleo. “We meet in Room 1 or 2, depending on availability and our technology needs. It's an excellent location, as our members range across the Chicago area.” The CPSA is a nonprofit organization for colored pencil enthusiasts working to promote colored pencils as a fine art medium by sponsoring exhibitions and workshops, being involved in product research, and educating the public. This chapter has nearly 50 members throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, and meets monthly on Sunday afternoons. The Chapter also donated several wonderful art books to Palatine Library, in memory of E. Jeffress, a founding member. Chapter member, Kristy Kutch, has written several books teaching pencil techniques, and she gives workshops across the country. Her book, The New Colored Pencil: Create Luminous Works with Innovative Materials and Techniques, is available to check out.
