Throughout history, public spaces have played a vital role in fostering a functional democracy, instilling a sense of belongingness and identity among different communities.

The thesis therefore aims at studying and evaluating the decline of public spaces and the need for these spaces in the current city demographic. This analysis is an attempt to emphasize and define public spaces in an urban context and to demonstrate what makes these public spaces important to the lives of those who dwell in the city. The thesis will finally, demonstrate how upcoming typologies can incorporate a public realm within for a livelier urban space.

Common spaces have encouraged social and physical activity, brought people on common viewpoints and shared goals together, encouraged expression and instilled a sense of belongingness and identity among different communities.

The study will be understood against the background of the importance of building sustainable lively urban spaces. It will also assess the changing role of these spaces in relation with the private life. To understand the current scenario, a review of the existing public spaces in Mumbai is undertaken. It will be appraised based on the needs the specific spaces cater to.

This analysis is an attempt to emphasize and define public spaces in an urban context and to demonstrate what makes these public spaces important to the lives of those who dwell in the city.

About the site In the predominant form of architectureprivate enclaves, the building, that is the body has no relation with its surroundings.

This anti-social behaviour makes it uninviting and devoid of public life, even during working hours.

One such example is the BandraKurla Complex (BKC) that has grown tremendously as a premium center with heavy footfall. But appalingly, every building, even with quality and cutting edge architecture, is planned to maximize retail value and forgoes the accommodation of basic public spaces. As a result, people are left with no spaces to gather, socialize or have a cup of coffee. This type of gated format alienise us from our surroundings to an extent that even planned public places here are dead without efforts.

Understanding these challenges, it makes more sense to accommodate, a hybrid format for inclusion of public fabric in this city. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how office typology can incorporate a public realm within for a livelier urban space.

The main usage of the land is commercial in the centre, with residential buildings at the edges and large open spaces scattered.

Owing to their size and gated format, the green open spaces remain largely unused. Despite the various walkways, arcades and spill outs that were planned for public activity, they did not materialize into active sites.

Giving a visual of the public crawl inside the building. Unique combinations of public activities will give rise to more synergy of functions and create new forms of spill outs altogether.

The design strategy to bring in public into the building is ‘the crawl’, in literal sense.

A public route is created next to private spaces, so that the building remains active throughout the day and at night too.

The office goers can choose to interact with these spaces if they wish, although a private uninterrupted circulation is also given. Public and private spaces, overlooking each other, create new fun and interesting interactions.

The crawl continues in all the buildings following a different rhythm.

A raised green square between two office buildings acts as a spillout and entry point for public to access spaces such as auditorium and library.

First floor plan

Both the retail buildings spill out into food courts and a roof garden, to keep the space active.

The public functions gradually reduce at this level, giving more area for offices and retail.

To keep the activity flow at all hours, discussion spaces and play areas are provided at various places.

Third floor plan

The building is designed to give opportunities for enclosed private functions to spill out into common areas like roof garden, indoor gym and conference rooms.

At this stage, public functions are limited to facade of main office building which is seen from main road.

Fifth floor plan

Smaller functions such as coffee station, smoking lounges, play and seating areas, library and eventually a food court are provided.

Sectional Character This section cuts through public institution. The crawl is created in a manner that it takes you from the entry square to the cultural square at the back of the building. In between you pass through functions such as library, food court and a multipurpose hall.

Being entry and meeting point, with a bus stop, this space is kept active by providing public institutions: library and museums. Seating in form of benches and huge staircase is provided for spillout. Activities like newspaper stands, temporary hawking and food carts take place in the platforms in between.

One of the most interesting crawls, is that of the office building. The building is made accessible to everyone by adding public functions like auditorium, conference rooms, food courts, play areas, etc.

Redesigning the waterfront to open it up to the city would unlock the potential of the land and new opportunities. The idea is to create a city connected with multiple modes of green public transport networks and pedestrian streets which provide ease of access to the residents and is an urban magnet for tourists. The proposal challenges the status quo methods of urban development by offering an inclusive and integrated urban ecosystem.

Proposed Master Plan for Darukhana

Life between buildings is a proposal that delves into the sustainable development of high rise and high density neighborhoods, by activating intermediate planes amidst the urban built form. A multi-modal transit system connecting from one end of site to another is devised. Designated green spaces assist in distributing crowd densities while urban farms support local communities either financially or through efficient food production. The proposal challenges the status quo methods of urban development by offering an inclusive, integrated and connected urban ecosystem.

Sectional Character The ground plane is activated by the juxtaposition of open green spaces and shaded public and semi public spaces. The ground seeks to allay the stark polarity between the busy peripheral road network and the waters edge. In order for the routes to be safe and lively, public plazas, green spaces and corridors are provided.

A mix of shops, restaurants and open-air markets have been proposed within the network to encourage walking. The scale of open spaces to buildings is broken down to create more intimate, usable spaces.

Public plane connects to other blocks through connectors which cater to pedestrian and cycle circulation and engage the public through ancillary programs such as libraries and gyms.

Development in Ramnagar, Varanasi

Around 1750

The Ramnagar fort was made in the Mughal style in 1750’s by Kashi Raja Balwant Singh. The title was abolished in 1971, yet the current Maharaja resides in the fort. The city seemed to have grown radially around the fort, creating dense pockets in the area.

Around 1850 With industries coming up in the early 1900s, an industrial area was set up on the outskirts for various manufacturing units and along the Grand Trunk road. It created employment, thus drawing people in and around the area, and the nearby villages.

Around 1900 With the multi modal terminal coming up in 2019, Varanasi is going to be connected to Haldia via the NW for transportation of cargo or export in the South Eastern countries. An estimate of 360 direct jobs and innumerous indirect jobs has been made.

Ramnagar, Varanasi a small town on the other side of the river Ganga, has an exceptional urban setting with its initial growth around the Fort. It deems to be the major trade hub of east Uttar Pradesh with lots of new upcoming projects on the urban scale. The town is scattered across the land with small pockets of houses with bare amenities.

The new town is growing around the industrial zone which is well connected with roadways and railways (only for goods). The upcoming waterway network, is being developed with the construction of multimodal inland water way port to open the ganga water to trade economy.

In the heart of Ajmer lies the religious institution of Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah Sharif which is venerated by both, Muslims and Hindus. The sense of worship and homage is strong but what lacks is people’s association to the Dargah, apart from spiritual experience.

The project ‘Catalyst’, focuses on exploring forms of worship and understanding the history apart from mere inscriptions.

It proposes administration setup and welfare, a museum and archival center that explores devotional songs. These modifications to the existing inclusive loops might help enhance the experience.

‘Feedback recordings into an acoustic situation’

The Dargah functions as a result of many systems coming together. These systems exist with necessary coordination among each other to ensure smooth functioning.

These are closed loops perpetually in motion where a slight disturbance would create a new outcome in the system.

We have chosen to identify three loops: Administration, History and Qawali culture, altering which we believe will reimagine the functioning of the Dargah. The intervention will be a catalyst that brings about a change in these systems and starts a process of relooking at the beliefs and practices within the Dargah.

S(tree)tscape is urban furniture that offers the possibility of momentarily disconnecting from the rush of the city amidst a busy day. The proposal aims to curate the act of sitting into a more dynamic urban experience, drawing from the memories of climbing up trees and viewing life from above. At the urban planning level, the aim of the proposal is to connect the Campus 3 in the Prinz-Karl-Viertel with the other two campuses: Campus am Brunnenlech and Campus am Roten Tor and the adjacent districts of the city and their integration into functional, mobile and spatial level.

The idea of the campus, on which the university has so far been successfully oriented, should be continued here. The same idea of planning, arranging the buildings around a courtyard, is applied to the concept of Campus 3, resulting in a system of smaller courtyards, based on the urban structure of the area. The courtyard serves as a space for interactions and creates relationship between buildings at the heart of campus.

-Extension of the entire quarter along east-west axis, creating continuity and a visual relationship between the cell tower and the centre of the district -Integration of the existing biotope into the fabric of the campus

-The design follows an arrangement in which a series of courtyards interlock along an imaginary diagonal. This creates the main connection to the city, eastwest axis and the existing Prince Charles district.

The volumetric arrangement has the following objectives: - To establish a coherent image of the entire building ensemble, despite different room programs. Based on a building typology whose ground floor use is more public in nature and has a larger area, and whose upper floors consist of slimmer structures and a smaller grid of offices, a common volumetric solution is shown.

- The achievement of a scale and volumetric integration into residential fabric of the Prinz-Karl-Viertel by fragmentation of the volumes in line with the surrounding development.

- Positioning the tallest buildings around the north-eastern corner, which form the entrance gate to the campus and the city and a characteristic silhouette.

The residential development along Ulitsa Lenuna, Gagarin is a combination of villa, single familia and collective residential with boulevards and courtyards. Based on architectural language of empire style, a symbol of power and prosperity, commonly found in Russia, the design proposal was made. The aim was to incorporate the style with modifications to fit in modern housing. A combination of three buildings, each with 15-21 apartments in it was used with combination of various natures of courtyards.

Playgrounds for the residents of the building

The Boulevard has a green buffer from the main road on one side and a strip park on other for a better pedestrian experience. Central courtyards are filled with trees and seating which is accessible by everyone. Whereas the east and west court are playgrounds for the residents of the buildings and the villas. Parking is provided for residents at the back, for quicker access to the buildings as cars aren’t allowed inside the sector.

The starting point for the re-organization of the town square is the analysis of the current situation and the general conditions of Rathausplatz. As there is no parking on this sunny side, it is possible to create new public recreation areas with shade plantations. The redesign responds to the existing passages between the buildings with open spaces on both sides of the road to ensure a direct pedestrian connection. Attention is paid to the area in front of the town hall, where lounge areas are possible on both sides. On the east side, the demolition of the residential building allows the possibility of creating a small square in front of the city tower as an entrance, creating a transitional area.

The organization of mobility in the area of the town square aims to create an area of coexistence between the different modes of transport: pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and to become a street where car feels as a guest in a trafficcalmed area.

It is expected that the excessive existing traffic will be reduced by reversing the entrance and exit of the car park Bürg, so that the traffic directly leads to the church square, without having to cross the town square.

Stadplatz

The traffic runs on a 3.50m wide, shared with bicycles lane. The parking pitches are located on the southern sidewalk, so that the northern with its better sunlight is available for pedestrians.

Vilsbrücke

To ensure the connection between the two shores, the existing cross-section of the road with a track of 3.00 meters in each direction is maintained for car and bicycle traffic at a Tempo 20 zone.

Vilvorstadt

The road section maintains its cross section with a track in each direction, on which traffic will operate at a speed of 20 km / h. A roundabout is planned at Passauerstrate, to reorganise the crossing and avoid the accumulation of waiting cars.

Section through historic centre of Vilsofen All space is activated as a single, continuous platform surface to ensure accessibility throughout. The topography that is in contact with the facades has been designed to eliminate the steps and barriers to accessing the shops.

The design of the course is solved by a paving of granite slabs with bush hammered surfaces of different dimensions. These panels give the whole street continuity. A series of lines and borders of varying widths, dissected with 10 x 10 cm granite paving stones, complete the picture. The borders depict a geometric pattern on the floor, which on the one hand corresponds to functional criteria and mobility management, but at the same time arranges the spaces and turns them into an irregular geometry.

This mosaic is associated with the facades of the buildings and the organism of the historic center. It becomes a sturdy and flexible carpet that can adapt to different configurations throughout its life.

The parking pitches are located on the southern sidewalk of the square, so that the northern sidewalk with its better sunlight is available for pedestrians. The sidewalks of the town square are widened to create living areas.

Functional Aspect: Improving the lighting in the central part, which is currently inadequate, will result in greater homogeneity and continuity. To this end, it is proposed to place a line of lampposts on the northern walkway of the square.

Examination of existing wall lights and their equipment with stronger LEDs and a color light temperature of 2700k.

Atmospheric aspect: For the new planned living areas, small points of light are added as bollards that give a warmer light and create a more collective atmosphere.

Decorative aspect: The current illumination of the city tower and the church is hardly available. The unique and beautiful architecture of these buildings does not stand out. A specific decorative lighting of the facades, which make the buildings the center of the square at night is proposed.

The starting point for the addition of furniture to the town square is from the analysis of the current situation and the general requirements of Rathausplatz.

In response, a flexible design that can be adapted to the various uses and to the useful life of the space, a family of elements of unified street furniture has been designed. They can be grouped in different configurations to meet all requirements. The groupings aim to avoid the confusion of objects. All elements share a constructive system and essential materiality. They create their own recreation areas in their surroundings. They are composed of the following elements: bench, seats, pots for small trees, litter bins and bollards for decorative lighting.

INTERVENTION IN HOMEGROWN NEIGHBOURHOOD Site location: Dharavi, Mumbai Professional Practice, 2019 at Dharavi, a neighbourhood infamous as one of the world’s largest slums, is an unending stretch of narrow lanes, open sewers and cramped huts. During my tenure at Urbz, I got the opportunity to experiment in developing this homegrown neighbourhood at various scales. The projects were an attempt at devising solutions to some of the basic, yet integral structural handicaps faced by the residents of Dharavi. I primarily contributed to designing the redevelopment of two chawls and collaborating on the Handstorm Workshop, which is focused on improving the daily life of the residents.

Type of Project: Chawl Redevelopment Site Area: 2795 sq.ft

This chawl is a Ground+1 storey structure with 20 tenements. For redevelopment, of a thorough documentation of the existing room sizes and organisation was done. The major challenges of this project:

- The high density of the building and a common wall with neighbouring plot has resulted in poor light and ventilation. Thus, in the proposed design the staircase is wrapped around a light-well to bring light to the chowk.

- The new design had to maintain the location of each home and accommodate a toilet, even in homes of around 90 sq.ft.

-The site has a level difference which is negotiated through the design of the staircase, that doubles up as a corridor and the landings give access to units.

MIXED USE BUILDING AT DHARAVI MAIN ROAD Type of Project: Chawl Redevelopment Site Area: 3000 sq.ft

The original mixed-use structure consisting of various shops and residential units was a single storey structure. The redevelopment of this structure was a collective decision of the owners and the local contractor Mr. Joseph Koli, whose designing was undertaken by urbz. The new structure is a ground plus three floors building with additional floors for renting out as an income generating source for the contractor.

Smoke Kilns in Kumbharwada

The students interacted with various Kumbhars (potters), one of the oldest communities in Dharavi and observed their workshops and living conditions. There are around 700 kilns, that run all day long, each emitting large amounts of copious toxic smoke, affecting surrounding homes. The effect of the smoke is visible on the exteriors of the buildings whose facades have all turned a blackish colour from the accumulation of soot. The objective of the workshop was to come up with a viable and cost-effective design to relieve the effect of the smoke and pollutants.

The fifth iteration of the Handstorm workshop—a collaborative effort between Urbz and the Engineers for Social Impact at NYU Abu Dhabi saw teams of students building on the work of the previous years or collaborating with residents on entirely new design interventions. This workshop aims to facilitate incremental and sustainable design interventions that improve the quality of life in Dharavi across scale. We proposed and subsequently executed immediate design solutions for the challenges faced at the household and institutional level within the settlement.

A group focused on the homegrown papad-making business, to design and build a prototype to reduce papad drying time during monsoons.

Cool roof project

One of the groups attempted to implement cool roof concept at a primary school. The team contemplated extending the height of the roof and placing a structure built from a sandwich of materials on top of the existing cement roof to create an air gap which would enhance the insulation. However, after deliberation, a more cost-effective decision was to extend the height and place a steel frame on which a tarpaulin sheet was attached to reduce the heat absorption.

A large number of homegrown structures in Mumbai have corrugated sheets as roof, an affordable and easy install but a hazardous material. They do not offer any protection from the summer heat, making it impossible to stay at home during the day. In Dharavi, where many units function as both homes and workspaces, this material creates unbearable conditions during the day.
