THE BIG PICTURE They say a picture paints a thousand words, but when your subject is literally larger than life, a thousand words just doesn’t seem enough. Never shying away from a challenge, young emerging artist Claire Foxton has broken into the world of public art, in the biggest way possible. Now painting large scale murals across Australia and beyond, Claire possesses the rare ability to communicate a million words, with one brush.


How would you describe your work? I’d describe my mural work as a hybrid of abstraction and realism. My works are mostly portraits. I go big and bold with my colour palette but the subjects I choose give my work a deeper meaning and purpose. I love finding people who may be a more unassuming kind of hero, local to the area I’m painting in. The connection I make with my subjects, and the broader community while the piece is coming together, is what it’s all about for me. In 2016, you painted your first large scale mural. How did this opportunity come about? I was lucky. I got given an opportunity to paint some temporary hoarding at a local shopping centre without having any previous experience painting on that scale. It was equal parts terrifying and exciting and I didn’t think I’d be able to pull it off. It was the perfect platform for what was to come. I had no idea where it could lead me so I’m really glad I didn’t let my self-doubt win early on! Street art, what does it mean to you? I’ve never felt at home in the standard white-walled gallery space. Street art is accessible and inclusive. It can also be polarising and controversial. I love all facets of it - regardless of the intent, there’s a definite exchange between the artist, the artwork and the public. It adds to the cultural and historical milieu of a place and is a discussion point for all - regardless of their affinity with the art world. Buildings and walls are big canvases and often in very public places. Is creating these murals a nerve-racking process? Yes! Unlike studio work, there’s nothing to hide behind. You can’t just flip the canvas around, or leave it unfinished and come back to it in a few months. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, and I feel nervous right up until the last stroke, because until then it doesn’t feel good enough. It can look like an eyesore until the last day when everything comes together! That pains me... I hate leaving at the end of each day and I feel like telling the people passing by ‘It’s not done yet! It will be better tomorrow, I promise!!’. It looks like you travel quite a bit! Do different environments/cities influence your work? I’ve been lucky enough to travel to different parts of Australia to paint, and I’m just finalising an overseas project for the end of the year. As a mural artist paid to contribute to a space, I feel I have a duty to consider the physical environment I’m painting in, and the communities I’m painting for. I do as much research as I can before I get to a place, and often will call on the help of people on the ground to guide me in the right direction. You recently created a breathtaking mural at the Brisbane Street Art Festival. Can you tell us about the subject? This mural was personally one of my favourites because of the subject, but also because it felt like a turning point for me in my practice. It was a challenging surface (all brick) but after that wall I felt like I could tackle anything! Alethea Beetson is the subject in this piece. Alethea runs a non-profit indigenous youth organisation, Digi Youth Arts. The organisation mentors young indigenous kids through theatre, music and art, and empowers them through creative exploration and storytelling. What advice would you give to an emerging artist/designer? Do the things you think you can’t. Don’t let self-doubt sway you - it could be holding you back from achieving big things. Literally and figuratively!
