ma mère dans TheDisappearance of Eleanor Rigby, de Ned Benson, un film que j’adore. Aujourd’hui, elle sait qu’elle compte parmi mes mentors et c’est un grand honneur pour moi. Toutefois, je n’aurais jamais pensé me retrouver un jour membre du jury à Cannes et devoir «juger» un film dans lequel elle joue ! Le cinéma vous fait connaître des situations qui vous rendent très humbles.
Jessica Chastain is at the top of her game: twice-nominated for an Oscar, a member of the jury at this year’s Cannes Festival, a producer, and an actress with six films on the way. This success, she says, is partly down to the women she has played in films like Zero Dark Thirty and Miss Sloane; their determination has rubbed off and made her stronger and more concentrated: “I now have my own production company, Freckle Films, which fights to develop projects for women –in Hollywood, making sure women exist on screen is a struggle.” For each character she plays, “I invent their past, their childhood, but also their secrets, which I don’t even tell the director about. It’s my way of getting close to the women I play”. She has been influenced by many different actors over the years: “Al Pacino taught me so much about acting for the camera, which is so different to the theatre. Isabelle Huppert knows that she is one of my mentors and it’s such an honor!” Chastain’s next project is Xavier Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan: “Xavier asked me to cut my hair short and dye it red to play the character of a celebrity-magazine editor. It’s going to be amazing –pure Xavier Dolan!”

Je dois vraiment beaucoup au Festival de Cannes. Dans TheDeath and Life of John F. Donovan, Xavier m’a demandé de me couper les cheveux courts et de les teindre en rouge pour jouer le personnage d’une rédactrice en chef d’un magazine à scandale prête à tout pour détruire la carrière d’une star hollywoodienne, jouée par Kit Harington, de Game of Thrones. Ça va être génial, du pur Xavier Dolan ! Parmi vos autres projets, quels films vous tiennent à cœur ?
Woman Walks Ahead, de Susanna White, un drame historique que je produis et dans lequel je joue une peintre qui devient la conseillère du chef indien Sitting Bull. Et Molly’s Game, le premier film réalisé par le grand scénariste Aaron Sorkin. Propos recueillis par J U L I E T T E M I C H A U D
