At Pakuranga College we aim to provide sports opportunities through the delivery of a quality sports programme catering to the diverse needs of all our students. The focus of the Sports Department is to increase overall participation in sport and raise the level of achievement across our sports codes. We do this with consistent, high-quality coaching through the grades.
The sports programme comprises close to 100 teams across 30 codes of sport. In many sports, coaching development staff work alongside our team coaches to ensure the coaching provided to students meets our high standards.
• PARTICIPATION: to offer sports opportunities for all students.

Pakuranga College has experienced huge growth in its basketball programme over the past few years. This year our Premier Boys’ team is competing in the Senior A Grade. Our girls’ teams are competing in the Central East Secondary Schools Competition. To ensure that our development continues, we are running an internal competition for our students. We also run holiday training camps and basketball skills sessions.
Netball is one of our most popular sports, with a large number of participants. We have 16 netball teams, most of which compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition on Saturdays at Morrin Road. We have opportunities for student coaches, umpires, and managers and have teams for all levels and ages. The Premier team plays in the Premier Reserve Grade and is currently preparing for their UNISS tournament.
We are currently in a rebuilding phase with our programme. After some good work developing our junior programme last year, we are reaping the benefits with the 1st XV and 2nd XV teams showing promise this season. The 1st XV is competing in the Auckland 1B Grade, and is coming off a few good wins to qualify for the Top 8. The U15 team is also having a solid season, and we also have a 6th grade team, too.
Our college has a strong football fraternity. This year the football programme includes six boys’ teams, which compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition, and three girls’ teams, which compete in the Greater Auckland Competition. The 1st XI Boys’ team now competes in the Auckland A2 Grade.
Hockey is one of the stronger and more competitive sports currently offered at Pakuranga College, and this year we have four teams participating in the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition - one boys’ team, two girls’ teams and one mixed team. This season the 1st XI Boys’ team has been promoted to the Senior A Grade, and our 1st XI Girls’ team is competing in the Open A Grade. Senior teams are currently preparing for their national tournaments.
We have more table tennis teams competing on Friday nights in the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition than in previous years. Our more competitive teams play at Gillies Avenue in the Premier and Senior A Grades, and the remaining teams play in a local competition at Saint Kentigern College. Our players are fortunate to be coached by national table tennis representative player, Dinyar Irani. Along with Dinyar and Auckland Table Tennis, we run a community table tennis programme at the school throughout the year.
Badminton is one of the fastest growing sports at Pakuranga College, with very high levels of student participation. We play in the Auckland competition in Terms 2 and 3. Our teams range from A Grade, playing competitively, to development teams playing in a more social grade.

ROEI ROTENBERG PREMIER BOYS’ BASKETBALL COACH
Roei Rotenberg, a current member of the New Zealand Breakers coaching staff and Assistant Coach of the Bulls team in New Zealand’s NBL, is leading our Premier Boys’ Basketball team in 2024.
Roei has achieved great success with the team in the two years he has been coaching them, leading the team through a successful promotion challenge to move from the Open A Grade up to the Senior A.
LUKE HOLMES 1ST XI BOYS’ HOCKEY COACH
Luke Holmes draws on his experiences playing for the New Zealand men’s team, the Black Sticks, to coach our 1st XI Boys’ Hockey.
In his second season at the college, he enjoys connecting with players to set goals, continuously build their skills, and elevate them to the next level of play.
Roei believes that coaching is about helping players to be better, not just in their chosen sport but in all areas of their lives. He enjoys being part of player development, building belief, and seeing the awe on students’ faces when they achieve things they thought were impossible.
