AM NOT sure it is just a coincidence. There seems to be a well thought out script behind it all. First, Pakistan is forced to withdraw from National Security Advisors’ meeting scheduled on August 23-24 in New Delhi. Right on its heels the Afghan finance minister cancels his trip to Islamabad for a meeting of Joint Economic Commission (JEC) scheduled on August 24-25. Along with it comes the news that a violent crowd had staged a protest demonstration in front of Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul blaming Pakistan for the new wave of terror attacks in Afghanistan. This was followed immediately by a ban imposed ‘voluntarily’ by Afghan traders on import of medicines from Pakistan. As if serving perhaps as some kind of un-spoken backup to this pressure the US has threatened to stop the last tranche of $300 million from the $1.1 billion Coalition Support Fund (CSF) ostensibly to punish Pakistan for continuing to provide in the opinion of Washington sanctuary to the Haqqanis which are blamed for mounting attacks on Afghanistan from across the Durand Line. Meanwhile both the Line of Control (LoC) and the Durand Line (DL) have become too hot as the two, India and Afghanistan acting in lockstep seemingly at the behest of the US appear to be trying to force Pakistan to succumb to the dictates of the US (to oust the Haqqanis from its safe havens), India (to give up claim on Kashmir) and Afghanistan (to deliver Afghan Taliban in Islamabad’s protective custody for reconciliation talks). Pakistan alone cannot face off these threats and pressures. Among friends we can cur-

Brahamdagh withdraws demand for ‘independent’ Balochistan Ready to talk to sort political solution to problems Malik welcomes STAFF REPORTER LAHORE—Founder of Baloch Republic Party, separatist leader Brahamdagh Bugti on Wednesday said he is ready to renounce demand of independent Balochistan and said he is willing to talk to govenment in order to sort out the issues. In an interview with BBC Urdu, Bugti said the establishment has to accept its faults too. He said Baloch people should be added to the development mainstream. He said if Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar who is in London with regard to Imran Farooq murder case wants
to meet him then he is ready because “we are politicians and want political solution to the issues”. “Our doors are open for him if he wants to meet, as we are politicians and always ready to see political solutions to issues,” he said. Brahamdagh Bugti linked his readiness to withdraw his demand for an ‘independent Balochistan’ with the wishes of the people of the province. “If the Baloch people are willing then I will call the ‘movement for a separate country’ off. We want to resolve the issues politically, peacefully, and amicably,” he told British Broadcasting Cor-
poration Urdu in a latest interview. This is a rare development as Bugti, the founding chief of Baloch Republican Party, had sworn not to sit down with the government on any condition. The government of Balochistan has welcomed Bugti’s fence-mending icebreaker. Bugti had always rejected negotiations in the past and remained firm in his stance for an ‘independent’ Balochistan. Bugti, who has been adamant on waging an insurgency for separation of Balochistan, said he is willing to come to the table if “our friends, comrades, political allies, and majority of people wish to stay within Pakistan.”
Bugti, who currently resides in Switzerland, elaborated by asking what difference has been made by torture, killings and arrests in the last ten to fifteen years. He also stated that the negotiating environment must be conducive. When asked about assistance from India, Bugti said he will not deny it, as it is usual for people to ask for assistance when they are defending themselves. “Development in Balochistan is irrelevant, as a democratic government is not present in the province,” said Bugti. URING Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s just concluded visit to Kazakhstan, China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) among other matters, remained in limelight. The Kazakh leaders seemed fascinated over the vision that gave birth to CPEC project. In fact China visualized the Corridor to link itself with Pakistan economically. And Pakistan quickly embraced the idea. Now that the CPEC has been launched in all earnestness its rel-
evance expands beyond Pakistan and China. Though China has a vision of building more corridors out to other countries besides Pakistan, such linkages are yet in embryo stage. The CPEC is destined to be twined with other economic corridors, China envisions to build to boost its economic ties with other regions, particularly, the Central Asia. Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov discussed with his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif the prospects of CPEC for Pakistan and China and he was visibly impressed saying his country would like to join
the CPEC project as it would provide alternate route to it for access to sea. CPEC’s connectivity with Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries will revolutionize the vast regions of South and Central Asia. Kazakhstan, other Central Asian countries and Pakistan have great economic potential which needs to explored and exploited. Abundant natural resources of Central Asia and Pakistan can be harvested through building of infrastructures, especially roads and railways and provision of air links. Talented and hardworking manpower of Pakistan will be highly useful in
manning of economic projects of the corridor. The CPEC and the proposed allied corridors would pave the way for fast pace of progress throughout. China being advanced in terms of technology would meet technological needs of the economic projects being envisaged in line with the corridor vision. The idea of CPEC has been conceived to bring about a paradigm shift in the current world economic order. The world economic order today accentuates dominance of the
