TDAP fashion show 2015 top nine

adnan pardesy Ali Xeeshan zaheer abbas ybq sadaf malattere Nida Azwer Zainab chottani inaaya Mohsin ali We pick the best and brightest of TDAP’s Fashion Show 2015!

AD mohsin ali

Mohsin Ali for Sana Safinaz’s capsule collection paid close attention to detail and spelt glamour with all the bling embellishments & fine use of silk! While this capsule collection was better than many other’s, it wasn’t as impressive as his mindblowing debut for Sana Safinaz at FPW.

adnan pardesy Adnan Pardesy showed the same collection as FPW 2014 which was a bit disappointing, but we loved it then and we love it now. This monochrome collection had structured and tapered jackets, twists and drapes all with glimpses of contemporary art graphics and intricate hand embroidery.

ALI XEESH ali xeeshan

High fashion prêtà-porter is a rare sight but Ali Xeeshan brought all dreams to reality by raising the bar for ready-to-wear fashion! His “Cotton Collection” showed us flattering silhouettes, ball skirts, structured and cropped jackets, matching two piece suits & tailored pants! The floral prints brought back the spring/ summer mood we have all been longing for. Ali Xeeshan’s shows are always full of enegry & drama and are a treat to watch.

zaheer abbas Zaheer Abbas’s “An ode to Thar” paid tribute to the women of Thar and their talent! The collection was undoubtedly a fusion of eastern and western trends. Zaheer Abbas incorporated bandhni into folksy dresses and modern silhouettes beautifully - we were impressed!

YQB YBq

We loved YBQ’s urban chic collection! The use of layered fabrics, earthy tones and round framed glasses made a statement. The originality was a reflection of YBQ’s hipster personality! And ten points for YBQ draping the model on stage!

s a da f m a l at e r r e Shades of green reminded us of the warmer days coming up ahead. The collection consisted of flirty silhouettes and flowy gowns, use of different textures and appliqué floral work that will make for some very beautiful looks in the upcoming season. Sadaf’s bright collection was definitely a breath of fresh air!

NIDA A nida azwer

Nida Azwer brought back colour this season with her “Bahaar” collection using yellows, pinks, oranges and blues. The use of gota and zardozi embroidery brought back some old school fun to the ramp. We love that Nida stuck to Eastern silhouettes. The use of silks, nets, cotton nets and printed fabrics worked really well!

zainab C h ot ta n i This seasons most impressive monotone collection was Zainab Chottani’s. The use of a nude colour palette, great mix of fabrics, different textures, lace and embroidery with jackets, crop tops and tailored pants, -her collection consisted of classic and timeless pieces.

INNAYA

inaay a We have been in love with Inaaya since their debut! Inaaya’s collection definitely felt updated and fierce but still true to their origin. We loved the attention to detail in each outfit whether it was the button detail on the tailored pants or the shimmery cuffs of an otherwise monotone jacket.

in the spotlight When did you first begin writing poetry? I started writing when I was really young! I used my journal to pen down all the places I visited with my family. I never wanted to forget the places I had been, and how I had felt during certain moments. I was always scared of poetry though. To me it was iambic pentameter. It was Shakespeare and Blake. It was Chaucer. My 10th grade English teacher Mr. Born brought poetry to me. Then, in boarding school in Wales, my best friend was a writer. She convinced me that this was something I could do as well.

zainabsyed

How does inspiration strike? Randomly. I have no control over it. I am always observing, and creating poetry in my head but most of it never makes it to paper. It happens when it needs to happen otherwise its forced and lacks the emotion. What personas have inspired you along your path? Too many of my own peers, or those a few years ahead of me. Arianna Sullivan, my best friend from Highschool and writer in crime. Laura Brown Lamb Lavoie who taught me how to fall in love with words. Fatima Asghar and Amina Sheikh, who showed me how to build on heritage. Kai Huang, Jess Chen for their honesty. Paul Tran whom I grew as a writer with. Phil Kaye. Anis Mojgani. Franny Choi, as a mentor. Tim Natividad as friend. Ke’alla Morelli. Jamila Woods. My own mother, and my grandparents whom I use as inspiration. If there is something they have all taught me, is that to be fearless if also, to be vulnerable.

2015

How did you get into spoken word? I had started writing at Atlantic College but never shared it with many. When I got to Brown, I attended a benefit for the Pakistani floods my first month there. Laura, Franny and Tim were performing at the event. I was mesmerized. Here was theatre, and poetry all packaged into one. I founded Amina afterwards and asked her what this was. She told me WORD! was a writing group that met in the basement of Africana studies department every Thursday at 9pm. I went to the next meeting, and never looked back. For 3 months I just sat Thursday after Thursday listening to all of these inspiring, thoughtful writers who talked about issues of race and injustice and war and things that mattered, and they did it so beautifully, I was awe-struck. 3 months in, one of my seniors came to me and said, you cant just take from this space. You also need to give back. So I wrote my first “spoken word” poem walking through campus one night. Can you talk us through your writing process for your spoken word poetry? Its highly inefficient. Ill be thinking about something – usually something I read, or see in the news. I’ll just rant for pages and pages. Then I’ll let it breathe for a while before coming back to it and completely ripping it apart. Sometimes when I’m zapped off inspiration, I just sit and listen to some of my favourite spoken word poets for hours. Imitation is the best form of poetry, to be honest. You use a skeleton, then make it your own. Slowly, you experiment with different forms and if youre lucky, at the end of it you come up with a style that is uniquely your own. What is it like to perform in different settings? How do you find the different audiences? Its absolutely beautiful every single time. I love being on stage. It was theatre before, poetry now. But something in the way I can look into people’s eyes and tell where they’re at (and if they’re actually listening or not!). But audiences are so unpredictable, and that’s the most exciting part for me. None of it ever seems rehearsed because each time is a journey I take with the audience, and we both learn a little bit about each other throughout the performance.

Have you ever had to force a piece? Yes, many times when I’ve had to work for a deadline. It’s like pulling teeth. Its extremely frustrating. It’s why I can’t have writing be my career. I’d be a horrible person to be around because I get into a terrible mood when I can’t write. What's most significant about spoken word poetry, and how do you hope to build upon its impact in the years to come? For me, there’s no one way about it. It’s a form of storytelling. An ancient tradition that has been a part of us, as humans, for centuries. Spoken word has the power to heal, to excite, to inspire – it does not depend on expertise or talent. It’s a way of looking at the world in all of its complexities and making sense of it all, creatively. It certainly has the ability to reach across to people no matter what boundaries we confine them into. I have seen it heal children in schools I taught workshops in after the Peshawar shooting, and incarcerated women when I worked at the prisons in Rhode Island. It has no age. It has no gender. Or race. And especially now, with the world erupting into fire everywhere, this is perhaps our best shot at maintaining our own sanity. Which advice would you give to young people interested in performance poetry? DO IT. Don’t let anyone tell you you have to be a certain way to be able to write. Poetry is precicely what you decide you want it to be. Run with it. Go to poetry events, join writing groups. Performance poetry begins first, with good writing. You need to create a piece that has as much impact when read on paper, as it does when it is performed. If you don’t have a writing circle, get a few people together, and make one. Listen to youtube videos of Andrea Gibson, Anis Mojgani, Sarah Kay, Phil Kaye to begin with, then keep going. Then write, just begin the process and don’t fixate on perfection. A poem is always being edited. Chances are, a few years from now it will be a completely different piece. And lastly, trust yourself to be the best judge of your experience. The best person to write your own narrative. Use poetry to articulate your own thought, don’t try to use it to explain what everyone else is thinking – and viola!

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? My husband and I try to throw in a mini-vacation each time we travel for work! We were already in Paris for the Texworld conference so decided to take some time off and head to a ski resort in Courchevel . It worked out beautifully as it was also Valentine’s Day weekend!

Where did you stay? The town itself is located 1850m above round! Known for it’s high ski slopes, there are many beautiful boutique hotels in the area! We stayed at one called Chival Blanc, a hotel owned by Louis Vuitton, which opened last year. This hotel had a beautiful interior, great service and was very comfortable! I would highly recommend it.

Who did you travel with? My husband

What are the best shopping spots there? Downtown Courchevel has all the designer stores

You might see a great-looking opportunity at the beginning of the week, but be sure you look at it in context. How will it impact those around you? What are the long-term consequences? Then, around Wednesday and Thursday, those leadership qualities of yours shine extra bright. Everyone will love to hear your latest big idea at this time, and since you’re surrounding yourself with the right people, they’ll have awesome input, too. Your road may be a little more rocky this weekend. Keep plans minimal, and find a positive way to deal with any frustration.

Those who think you’re a stick-in-themud might be mighty surprised by your agile attitude and fluid thinking as the week begins. You’re going with the flow, and you look fabulous doing it. But around Wednesday or Thursday, something — or someone — may stop you in your tracks. Don’t freak out; figure it out. Communication is key to getting a grip on this, so don’t clam up. The understanding you’re seeking is much easier to find from Friday afternoon through the weekend, and you’re also getting along beautifully with others. Enjoy time with friends (or with someone who’s a bit more than a friend!).

Moving forward with your private plan is one way to go at the beginning of the week; building trust and finding common ground is another. Then, around Wednesday and Thursday, you’re sharp as a tack, and it’s not just book-smarts — you’re emotionally intelligent as well. Put your head together with someone significant in your life, and see what you two can come up with. Whether you’re on the clock or not, work’s likely on your mind from Friday afternoon through the weekend. If you want a change, start doing some investigating.

It’s home (or friends and family) versus work and other responsibilities as the week begins. Explaining your situation and setting sensible priorities is better than stressing. Around Wednesday and Thursday, your sensitive side raises your awareness of a situation, but before you respond, look at the logical angle as well (or get someone to help you do so!). Then you really get it this weekend, with that intuitive understanding of yours helping you click with others and see your place in the universe. Everything’s interconnected.

Just because you know it doesn’t mean you have to show it, and a subtle, roundabout approach may be best as the week begins. Offering to help instead of offering your two cents is a nice way to go. You may need to relinquish something around Wednesday and Thursday. Letting go as a way to ultimately have more may be counterintuitive, but holding on too tightly is just uncomfortable. Some key information’s there for you on Friday or over the weekend. Dig a bit to find it. Once you do, don’t forget to note your first reaction — it’s correct.

Add a new twist as the week begins, and you just might see some immediate and pleasing results. Use that imagination — it’s particularly powerful now. Detailed mental efforts are favored around Wednesday and Thursday, whether you’re tackling the nitty-gritty on a work project or examining the ins and outs of a relationship. Make sure to look at the positive elements as well as doing the problem-solving. From Friday afternoon through the weekend, starting stuff on your own won’t go as well as helping others see things through — and the latter is more fun, too.

A little looking back may be inevitable as the week begins, but make sure you’re looking forward, too. If you feel a little blue, talk to a friend and come up with a plan. Around Wednesday and Thursday, you’re definitely up for getting out and about. And guess what? Love’s favored now, with your big, beautiful mind as a source of major allure. Smart is sexy, so don’t you dare dumb it down. This weekend, it’s more about baby steps than giant leaps. Appreciate the little things, and be ready to laugh something off.

If you’ve got a big idea, the stars are making it much, much easier to get it off the ground as the week begins. Someone you think might have objections is liable to offer support. But before you get carried away, beware of conflicts around Wednesday and Thursday. Maybe it’s your crazy-busy schedule, or maybe you and a loved one aren’t quite seeing eye-to-eye. Watch for an unexpected solution. Then, if you’ve got romance on your mind, get it out in the open from Friday afternoon through the weekend! A mystery of love can now be revealed. Hot!

Be frugal with money — but generous with your heart — as the week begins. Extravagance and new things might be momentarily pleasing, but sharing your feelings makes for beautiful and lasting bonds. You’re mentally on fire, both at work and at play, around Wednesday and Thursday. Bouncing those big ideas off someone else who’s extra sharp is fun and fruitful. When the weekend comes, you’re concerned with the opposite of practical matters — maybe romance, maybe higher principles. Explore away, but watch out for losing track of time!

The strides you make as the week begins are immensely satisfying, but make sure you’re not only concentrating on work. The interpersonal angle’s favored now, too; make hot stuff happen in your love life! Be ready to make some adjustments to your plans around Wednesday and Thursday. This may be a moment-by-moment rescheduling thing, or it could impact your larger life path. From Friday afternoon through the weekend, your warmth and wisdom make your world a wonderful place. Share of yourself generously — and help a certain someone find an answer.

If you don’t exercise some self-control and set your own schedule as the week begins, someone else might impose an agenda on you. Be ready to discuss what you’re doing and exactly why. You can definitely move on to bigger and better things around Wednesday and Thursday. Take a glimmer of a promising idea and build it out into a shiny, wonderful thing. But when the weekend comes, your attention is required, with regard to something very much on the practical plane. Tune in, or you might find yourself on the receiving end of a major reality check.

Go after what you want as the week begins! You’ll never know until you try, and you might just try asking; it’s so simple that it might just work. Around Wednesday and Thursday, between your own stuff and others’ priorities (like your boss’ pet project or family matters), you’ve got a ton going on. Your instinct might be to run yourself ragged, apologizing all the way, but you’ll function far better if you actually take time out for yourself. Then, starting later in the day on Friday, some truly stellar energy’s coming your way. Plan for an amazing weekend!
