Nabila’s Salon has been synonymous with fashion-forward hair care since 1986, and the salon has achieved many a feat in the beauty industry. How did you attain this position, and how have you continuously set yourself apart from other, newer hairstylists and salons?

It’s very easy to get on top but it’s difficult to stay on top. Your question is very relevant and I feel like we keep working. I mean I know a lot of salons and brands that came, made money, and brought up links. I invest every penny that we make back into the business, into learning, my education, team training, building the brand, taking the future forward and being very current. Those are the values that we have and we keep at it. I think that’s the reason why you may love us or hate us but you can’t miss us.

What first attracted you to makeup and hairdressing?

It’s not makeup and hair dressing as much as it is image. I think by birth I was very image conscious. I remember being a 4-year-old and being slapped. I wasn’t worried about my face, I was worried about my image like I hope nobody saw me. Looking back in a retrospect, I was also a little crazy and quirky. I never wanted to blend in with the rest so I always had some element of crazy about me even when I didn’t have the exposure, the funds or the means to get interesting stuff. When my sister got married I was 12- years old, my mother made me a lovely white satin maxi at that time and I wore it with black leather boots. I looked like a fool but I just wanted to be different and that’s why I chose not to wear it with nice white sandals. It was crazy fashion ideas but that hasn’t changed and therefore, I’m still a bit quirky. The image thing is very important to me. Then of course the science of hair, makeup, cosmetology, surgeries and keeping up with your image head-to-toe would be my forte today.

What were your initial opinions of working in the Pakistani beauty industry, and how have those opinions evolved ever

since you started out?

When I started back in 1986, I remember my biggest worry or my biggest grief was to get people to wash their hair before coming. I mean when they came to the salon, they would come with oil and mehndi in their hair. They always used to come late; like please make an appointment, come on time, I have two hands. We had to do a lot of training and retraining. I think in the first ten years, the only thing I established were the etiquettes of going to the salon - what a cut meant, what a finish meant, what an appointment meant, what rebooking for your next appointment meant and what selling the right product that you could use at home meant.

So that was very challenging but once it was into system, everything eased down… a lot as today. There’s so much exposure that they are teaching us, challenging us, questioning us and they are commenting on our tardy, which I love because that keeps us on our toes.

You are one of the most esteemed and renowned hair designers and stylists in all of Pakistan, but having been in the business for decades, is there anything you would have done differently since the start of your career?

No, not much. I started when I was 19-years-old, the only thing I would have done was started when I was 12-years-old. I knew exactly what I wanted. My mother didn’t let me work because she said I had to finish my education and I couldn’t work until after marriage, so I was like why did I waste those 8 or 9 years? I could have started much earlier. That’s my only regret otherwise I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

After 34 years in the fashion industry, how do you continue to create great, new styles season after season?

I think my passion for fashion. I mean God forbid I shouldn’t be in fashion or on point because that keeps me on the next trend, feel, inspiration and direction. I’m also not following any trends,

I’m kind of making my own trends and when I get bored, I reinvent then I do the next thing and so on. There are a lot of things I do which are way ahead of time and therefore, might look a little quirky in the present. However, in a few years you will see that it will become a norm and a lot of other people will do it, then I change to something else. That’s how I keep my finger on the pulse of it. I was telling someone that if you ask me what my unique strength is, it would be my finger on the pulse of what’s happening internationally along with hands-on experience of the local industry. I’m able to take the current trend and translate it into our language, our sensibility and make it worth it.

Can you comment on the Pakistani beauty market? Is it an easy one to cater to?

I can’t complain because whatever name, fame, fortune or following I have made is from Pakistan. I can only have a lot of gratitude for our consumers. Having said that, of I could change one thing it would be to literally whisper to all our audience to create and invent your own unique style...like we all are playing vanillas. I feel a lot of times there is no uniqueness. They are all the same; the hair, the colors, the makeup, even the clothes, style, everything is the same. What about having your own unique element? If you have curly hair, dark skin, flat Chinese hair, big lips, fat nose or whatever it is, why can’t you celebrate it and make that your own unique style?

Speaking of the current global climate, what effects did the COVID-19 pandemic have on the business and how have you and your brand persevered through?

If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger and Covid-19 has affected us all. If I tell you how it has affected us directly, then for 5 months the salons were shut. We had over 200 employees, we had to pay the rents, we had to pay the salaries, we had to keep going and there was no income coming in. That has been the biggest challenge I have faced in my entire career. We all have a choice to either surrender and say ‘oh my God we are all dying, lets wait’ or we have the ability to say that I will use this weakness and will convert it into my strength. And that’s what we worked on. We realized that the need of the day has changed and the home service app is actually the birth of that period we went through. We all have been able to take time out and think of our values, priorities, the way we work, the mediums, the present and the future. I’m glad that we had the time to think. We think, we invent and we move forward.

We’ve already seen the Nabila Group at the forefront of ingenuity and trend setting when it comes to beauty in Pakistan. How is this collaboration taking the group a notch above where it stands today?

This collaboration with a younger generation, with the next generation, with beauty tech, with digital essence coming, with keeping the brand young as the vision is younger and the medium is changing. Technology is coming in, digital is coming in and I’m hoping that the younger generation will keep my vision, my heritage alive and will take it forward.

Zakir added: The niche has changed, the climate has changed.

they are comfortable. We really believe and understand that post Covid, people are most comfortable at their homes, spending most of their time with their phones. We all live on our mobiles, its surely the first thing you check in the morning and the last at night. We thought, how do we follow through with the brand and deliver the same superior services that we used to but in a comfortable/safe space? That’s how we came up with the idea of the App. The thought process was literally ‘if you cut off my hands, how will I work.’ Not just to sell more or to continue selling the salon services but also to understand the growing scape, the digital scape that we are entering. We are powering ourselves with beauty tech and we are growing to work where the medium is. We have a flagship salon but now we have a flagship app as well. The app represents us wherever we want to be. The idea of the app is to go beyond the Defense. Eventually, beyond Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and get to the rest of the nation; to the people who may not have access to us or the ability to come to us on a daily basis.

Also to understand that coming to the salon is a procedure. You have to get dressed up, find a driver, schedule a time and book your appointment etc. It’s the fun that comes with the App, you can be with a group of friends getting blow-dries done at your house before going out on a Friday night. You can gift it to your mother, sister, girlfriend, wife or whoever you want to. Moving for elderly is difficult as well; they aren’t as mobile as we are. So we want to be more reachable, more appreciable in people’s homes.

Nabila added: It’s not about the consumers alone, its also about the stylist because right now we are starting with a very small group within our company but we will reach out to a lot freelancers who will be employed and will get a job. With Covid, there are a lot of people who have been left jobless in this industry. This will give them a chance to work from our platform and earn with our stamp on it or with our procedure through which we will filter who we will choose. It won’t be everyone but we will reach out to not only more clients but also to more stylists. This is how we will give back to the community. Also, Zakir mentioned that it can become a fun thing to have a team in and have a pre party. That reminds me, we are synonymous with our Halloween parties and for me, the party itself isn’t as much fun as the pre party where all of us are getting dressed up. Even when my son Zair got married, Sara and I got dressed up together. So for me, the pre-party or the pre makeup ceremony itself is a ceremony. So, I’m hoping that people can enjoy all this a lot more in the comfort of their own home, their music with their friends around. I think it’s going to be interesting.

Zakir added: We are offering a new makeup service in there which is a minimal makeup service for people who might want to dress up for a brunch, seminar, a business meeting or whatever it might be. Express services; they get you ready for the occasion!

With a consortium of experts now a part of Nabila Group, what do you envision for the brand in the coming years?

Group N has Zero Makeup and it has salons in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. By the end of this year, we will be opening at least three more Salons, we are expending our reach through this team. Very soon, we will be launching another app that will be spot on again. We are reaching out more through our digital plat-

forms like our YouTube channel will be refreshed and revamped for education, master classes. Then the zero brand is growing, we have at least two more products launching this year and 50 in about the next five years, so there are so many verticals within the group Nabila and all of them are going to grow.

Zakir added: We are expanding our reach into digital beauty tech and we are expanding our retail variety while maintaining and respecting the Nabila’s brand values. The things I want to put in place more, more so that they already are - quality, sustainability and services. Its called a triple button - to care about people, land and profitable. I do want to be respectful and mindful about that!

In your opinion, what skills are necessary to build a successful brand such as yours?

I was called for a talk at Unilever one day and they said, ‘how did you build this brand?’ I was like I don’t know what brand, I don’t know anything about building a brand, I didn’t go to a marketing school or IBA or anything. In fact, I deleted whatever I learned academically and I trained myself to learn whatever I want to learn, how I want to learn and how much of it I want to use. I don’t even call myself academically well-versed. I didn’t even know what a brand was till very recently....that...oh its a brand. I just did the right thing every morning. When I sold my wedding diamonds and went to Sassoon, I learned and bought a very good scissor. I came back and opened a salon in my helpers’ room with one mirror, one chair, AC efficient, carried a lot of products’ bags and did a nice haircut at the right time. I think I was the cheapest at that time, I used to take seventy-five rupees for a haircut.

Zakir added: I have to say that I was six-months-old and in the next bedroom. This is fresh off pregnancy that she went to school, came back and started cutting hair at home.

Nabila: I was cutting from home because I wanted to keep an eye on both of my boys. Zair was just two years older than him. I had like a handful insight. I could hear them while cutting hair. Everyday I was very professional, I did a good haircut, I did it on time, I charged well and I kept doing that. There were times when people would come to me with bleached hair to get a perm and I would say...no we can’t do it, lets cancel the appointment. They would say but we booked you for three hours and I would say ok then lets have tea but not do the perm because it will break your hair.

That three hours where I could have made a few thousand rupees and I didn’t because ethically it was wrong to perm damaged hair, eventually gave me a lot of credibility. People now believe in what I say, they know I’m not doing it for my profits, I’m not doing it for petty change, I’m not doing it for making money, I’m just doing the right thing. A lot of times, I would say oh your haircut looks lovely and lets color it on the house because when you go home, I want to see the entire result or the color. A lot of times, I would say this is your color. You must take this zero palette gift on the house with you. A lot of times, people knew that we are doing the right thing and its not just for money. That’s how honest I have been in my work to myself and to my profession. Every-time I feel I have a weakness; I go learn, practice, correct it, teach it to my team, integrate it, get the better products, better education, skill and tools etc. I have been doing the right thing. Now thirty years later

when I look back, its a brand. I wasn’t building a brand, I didn’t know anything about it but I ended up building a brand because I did the right thing.

Zakir, can you walk us through your vision for the brand, how do you plan to steer the group into the future of beauty?

Zakir: I really want to escalate in the digital scape. As I mentioned earlier, its really important for us to be where our customers are most comfortable. In my mind, this is to where they are spending most of their time. Now that’s two places - your phone and your home. So, what we want to do is be present and deliver the service that you’re used to, via the app and also escalate what we are doing with e-commerce. Zero company itself is a DNVP which is a Digital Native Vertical Brand, we need to say that we are tied to customers’ approach. 80% of our sell is coming from online; more than that 92% of our consumers are on mobile. We need to think about that while planning are strategies. Digital is huge for us inside out maybe we are looking at the world but we are starting over here as we did with Zero, which is now internationally selling and delivers worldwide. We are looking at Nabila for Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and so on. Digital is one thing, using beauty tech to empower the next generation.

I think this is the next generation of consumption not just post Covid, but the digital era. This may have been for a long time so, it could be in the company with that skillset and those tools to escalate just into the future. Therefore, extending the reach and also, bringing in the elements of freshness. Freshness from me is you know the apple doesn’t fall so far from the tree and as she says, I always wanted to be different and look different that then evolved into me. I enjoy questioning the norm, why can’t I shop from the women’s section? Why can’t I wear this? Or why can’t I do this? I really like to strip things down and look at the fundamentals to why they exist. Its not who you are, it’s why you are and its the same with any function or service. I don’t want to take it for granted because there may be a thought process behind it that hasn’t been communicated. With the freshness, we are keeping the energy flowing in the brand being mindful and responsible.

There’s a sustainable approach I’m trying to incorporate into the business just to be mindful and responsible because I believe that yes, customers are the choice but businesses have the responsibility to do good or at least try to do good and not to be selfish.

One thing she taught me since I was born, she always says that I will never sell something I wouldn’t buy myself. That’s there in my blood, in my DNA. I’m translating that into how do to business and respect ourselves. Just to sum up; digital, freshness, sustainability, and beauty tech.

Where do you see Nabila’s Salon in the next 5 years? How do you hope to help the country enter the next gen for beauty with Nabila Group?

Zakir: In 5 months, we are opening 3 more salons so in 5 years; the boundaries are endless. I say that the boundaries are endless not because of anything that has happened but because there are not going to be any boundaries anymore. We are going to be living online, a big chunk of our business is going to be through internet based, online based or e-academy based while empowering people because Nabila brand at the end of the day is build on hands.

COVER STORY She believes that you don’t need to have an education. If you can do this with your hands, you can be an amazing hairdresser or hair stylist.

It’s more of a vocational training. The evolution of the brand is to empower more people, to reach more people and to deliver the same standard that we used to, to more people.

Nabila: Either Nabila salon could be in your house in five years or not on bricks and mortar anymore. I don’t know, I can’t tell. I’m not thinking five years, I’m thinking today reaching out more young talented vocational people. A lot of my stylists are not comfortable speaking in English and I tell them its ok. Italian prime minister can’t speak English, Japanese prime minister can’t speak English.

We don’t need to speak, we could be mute and we could just see a picture, take money and get our work done.

This is a very mute subject. When you go for your hair, you don’t need to speak, you could just show and imagine. A lot of vocation to the people who are talented, a lot of new talent empowering; not just the clients but also the stylists. That’s a big war that we are fighting everyday a little by little. Democratizing fashion, democratizing hair and makeup. I see that there are ridiculous prices attached to a bridal makeup by stylists or icons or divas right now. I think all of that needs to be available at a very affordable price to a lot more people by a lot more people. So a lot of democracy is going to come into it, I don’t know we may have a lot more bricks and motor salons as well as digital salons going in different ways to your house or location. It may be one or the other or it may be the combination of both. I don’t know, but I surely know we will be doing the right thing and we will be empowering people, ourselves. It will be a win win-win of course.

Social media has become so pronounced in everything we do, what role do you think it plays in the work you do today? How are you planning on combining innovation, tech, sustainability and beauty?

Zakir: It completely is. In fact, whether you like it or not, it’s the number one medium of communication. Every person has their own platform and has their own voice, which is happening through social media. If I ask you what did you do in lockdown, you will probably say you spent a lot of time online. May be more YouTube than usual, more Netflix than usual, still Facebook, Instagram or TikTok etc. Social media is an inevitable process but I think there’s a language that’s missing on social media, I think social media isn’t a billboard. It’s a two-way communication and it’s a great place for you to humanize your brand, communicating your psychographics or brand values rather than sell or buy. That’s one thing which is integral to my social media communication plan I’ll even enforce it to my team to engage, to interact, to communicate, to cater and so on. I just mentioned it above so I’ll keep it simple. My biggest contribution to this Nabila brand, the empire, the legacy or the heritage that she has been working on for so long is escalating it through beauty tech, to the next generation through beauty tech.

Speaking about social media, tell us a little more about your new App. It’s a free App, we don’t want to charge for it. It’s available on both PlayStore and AppStore.

Its going to be launched on the first of October. All you have to do is download the app, create your account and sign in. Book your service which will be hair, makeup and bridal packages right now. Its a condensed version of the Nabila’s menu or of the services we have right now.

We don’t want to do nails in case it gets messy, we don’t want to do heavy chemical treatments in your house because we don’t want to damage your stuff. We want to do stuff where we can come in and go out like nothing ever happened. Obviously, we have to think about certain technical things for our team as well. If they need washed hair or stuff like that and they don’t have the access to the sink. They aren’t going to go shower with you. We ask for certain things in this spell. The PPEs we have in salons are disinfected and we have kits that travel with the guys. It’s like a surgical pouch that they go and open for the first time. The app you can pay with cash or you can pay through credit card. For me, privacy and crucial information is super important. I don’t want to release data that includes stuff like that. We are working with a foreign company, its the same people who handle Uber, Careem or Bykea so its the same. The security aspect is there even the app navigation is very easy to use.

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

Completely stumbled upon it! I was studying to become a lawyer and had no clue about running a business. I started Hair Matters like a passion project and decided this is what I wanted to do full time! I’ve realised over time that sometimes you make plan for yourself but God Has His Own plans for you.

What was your “aha!” moment?

I was sitting with my friends and we were discussing up and coming start ups. We were brainstorming ideas so we could all do a little something of our own. I thought about it overnight and called them the next day and said I’m going to sell hair oils! They weren’t too excited but I was sure!

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

Once I started my own business, nothing could compete with the feeling of being my own boss. I worked in London for a few months but only with the aim of learning and coming back to my business. I definitely want to do new things or venture out, but never have I considered a career change.

When was time you felt completely demotivated and how did you push through it?

Demotivation is a common feeling because you’re not answerable to anyone else and your deadlines or goals are totally up to you, some days you just want to slack off and not get any work done. Its important to visualise your dreams so that you wake up everyday and work your way to that. Also, exercising in some form keeps you stay balanced and motivated as well. I find it extremely important.

What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

Skydiving What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

That it’s a full time job and even when you’re trying to relax and unwind, that little unfinished task is at the back of your mind.

Describe a day in your life I start my day with breakfast everyday and a mandatory mug of chai. I change and get ready for work because I feel its important to be dressed even if working from home. I start working and the first order of business is to overlook at the daily orders and make sure they’re dispatched on time. I then attend to everything else, marketing / talking to retailers / sourcing / inventory. I try to finish work by 4 pm so I can get to the golf course by 4:30 and play a round of golf before it gets dark.

TO ME, A BOSS LADY IS ANY WOMAN WHO TAKES CHARGE OF HER LIFE BE IT AT HER HOME, HER WORKPLACE OR WITH HER FAMILY.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

To not expand overnight. Most businesses fail when they try to expand overnight so there should be no hurry in immediate expansion. I’ve always tried to take small steps in these five years. Introducing new products over a certain period of time and increasing sales gradually. I think its important to understand that success isn’t always about having the ‘biggest’ business but the one that can survive over a long time.

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

Family & friends, the ability to travel and explore new

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

I think whatever failures I experienced in my journey ended up teaching me a lot more than the successes. I think its essential to identify your mistakes and then understand what went wrong. I also learnt that even when you make mistakes, there is always a way to stand back up. Its never the end.

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

Jacinda Ardern for sure!!

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

My advice would simply be to go for it! You’ll never know if your idea is a success or a failure if you don’t try.

I’d also like to add that a lot of girls do connect with me and ask me about my journey with Hair Matters and I always love to help. In fact, my best friend and I are now in the process of building a platform that will help young female entrepreneurs start their businesses.

Tell us the most exciting thing you did during your trip?

It was my first ever road trip, I drove through tunnels, parking car in fairy. All seven days we were non-stop travelling on wheels so that was quite exhilarating!

Any tips?

Travel light, you'll enjoy your trip more, and also do spend some real 'me' time when on vacation. Pack casual / comfortable outfits, enjoy the feel, ambiance, energy via exploring new places, Keep your focus on adventure, experiences and just enjoy your life!
