Critical care backup, Paediatric NICU & surgery, Cancer surgery, Cardiology Chest Pain Unit, Laparoscopic gynae surgery, Infertility IVF and ER are just a few of South City Hospital’s most prominent departments. Most recently the hospital came into the limelight for introducing one of the most effective systems when dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Negative pressure systems, geographical demarcation of the COVID-19 unit and a separate ER were just a few of the structural changes the hospital had made within a short span of 3 months. The hospital’s management was especially praised for creating a safe zone not just for COVID positive patients but also for the non-COVID patients seeking medical attention.

HOW DR. SAADIA VIRK LED SOUTH CITY HOSPITAL TO COMBAT COVID19 Firstly it is important to define what exactly is COVID19. COVID19 is a highly sophisticated virus which not only affected the morbidity and mortality of a vast proportion of our global population, it also created a huge impact on the global economy affecting our healthcare supplies, safety supplies, access to medication and access to health care equipment. Here lies the true challenge of tackling an adversary that is not only causing a direct negative impact on public health but it is also affecting any measures that you can take to counterbalance it.

As a tertiary care hospital specialising in evidence-based consultancy practice, South City Hospital immediately realised the need to plan for changes in preparation of the COVID19 pandemic.

of South City Hospital and a leading consultant in gynaecology & obstetrics stepped forth yet again as a leader of providing quality healthcare amidst all odds. To understand how the hospital moved forward in preparing itself, it is important to understand the vision behind the CEOs plan. South City Hospital was founded by an initial group of very successful consultants who are leaders in their respective fields, led by one of the most successful and dynamic woman of the country aka Dr. Saadia Virk. Proactive, available and ready to take on any challenge that comes, under her leadership, South City Hospital was on a growth curve, doing well in expanding its health care services moving towards more technological advancements for improving clinical outcomes for their patients.

All these plans came to an abrupt stop with the arrival of COVID19.

Immediately the need of the hour was to be prepared for the hard times that were yet to come. The CEO convened an emergency meeting in which she called upon her team of hospital administrators.

Highlighting the necessary protocols needed to help the country combat COVID19, Dr. Virk put into play the masterplan for the hospital to prepare.

It is important to know that as hospitals who are preparing for COVID, services had to be segregated into two. On the one hand essential services had to continue. People arriving in need of emergency surgery, pregnant women arriving who were booked for their deliveries, patients arriving with cardiac emergencies in need of urgent intervention etcetera. Beyond just the hospital, human kind found itself amidst a global medical alert during which access to hospitals had become difficult, patients were driving around in their cars and in ambulances looking for places in hospitals. The question remained; how would the situation be dealt with? How would safety be ensured if at all? How would hospitals be safe for doctors, nurses and patients? How does one prepare for such emergencies?

These were amongst several questions they were brought onto the table and required urgent answering. Foreseeing a way out of the situation, Dr. Saadia Virk and her team of professionals contemplated over creating isolation, segregation and diagnostic facilities to identify the disease whilst keeping the environment safe.

Her hospital went as far as creating a state-of-the-art fully equipped emergency room which was built to ensure patient safety amidst the pandemic. The hospital immediately decided that this emergency room could easily be converted into an isolation critical care unit.

The next challenge they faced was to ensure the newly created unit is structurally fully equipped with the right equipment to combat the spread of infection. What was required were negative pressure systems. The installation of negative pressure systems required re-engineering of airconditioning channels and installation of new equipment that help adjust the

airflow to maintain negative pressure inside a closed facility. This closed facility needed to act as a complete air seal. To air seal the entire department heavy double steel doors were installed minimising the risk of cross contamination.

Apart from the architectural and engineering modifications made, South City Hospital still faced the challenge of acquiring the appropriate medical equipment to give to the current unit.

Although the hospital was already equipped with critical care supplies such as ventilators and non-invasive ventilation machines, COVID19 was a dangerous disease which caused rapid and sudden deterioration of the respiratory system.

the increase in demand for medical services, South City Hospital rouse to the occasion dedicating two entire floors to COVID19. That meant another 30 beds of ICU, and another 50 beds of private rooms.

The struggle against Covid19 has been hard. It is not quantifiable the amount of challenges healthcare providers had to face but even today they have stepped up to the challenge, and remain standing against one of human kind’s biggest enemies, Covid19.

They needed to be sure that when patients came in, they had enough facilities for all.

With restrictions on imports, the hospital still continued working its way and in due course was able to acquire the right equipment and supplies including.

Watching the state in Wuhan and the devastating state in Italy, to voluntarily step into a situation where knowing that healthcare workers were going to face hardship, struggle and risk their lives was an enormous undertaking. The hospital stands proud of his healthcare workers in that all those who were called to be a part of the COVID19 team immediately volunteered and rose to the challenge.

Over the course of the next two months South City Hospital went on to further modify their unit architecturally, install negative pressure facilities and also to train healthcare workers.

Meanwhile the laboratory services were still on the lookout for PCR COVID19 testing kits. Procurement of these testing kits was near impossible, and without the ability to diagnose COVID19, the hospital could not admit COVID19 patients.

Eventually the hospital was able to open doors to cover the unit which contained more than 20 beds. Within hours after opening, the unit was fully occupied. The emergency room was fully occupied. Seeing

How long have you been practicing yoga?

I was introduced to yoga while living in Europe about 18 years ago. However, a more dedicated practice and commitment came about a decade ago. Since then I have done multiple international yoga courses and attained certifications for 1000 hours. Usual yoga teacher has 200 hours in Pakistan and I felt I had an edge in many areas of yoga. Thus, I established the first internationally accredited Yoga

training institute, Aliya Agha Academy of Internal Arts (AAAIA), in Pakistan.

AAAIA aims to fill the knowledge gap and Pakistanis now have access to quality training in our country.

How did you get started?

My first yoga class was with a hippie. She had long dreadlocks, lots of tattoos, toe rings and piercings. I came with a corporate mindset and this whole thing did not resonate with me. Many years later I was introduced

to yoga as therapy for my back injury and since then I have adopted the discipline as my lifestyle. Initially, it was hard for me to understand the spiritual dimension of yoga but once we understand from a philosophical lens that we are cosmic beings then a whole new dimension presents itself.

Its then that, one feels an in and out transformation taking place.

What type of yoga do you teach?

(Please explain)

I have been trained in multiple styles ranging from classical Hatha to Ashtanga Vinyasa and therapy yoga. Some famous types of yoga which are considered as styles are actually brand names, Bikram Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, and Yin Yoga.

My own practice aims to cover the classical yoga. The Yoga Teacher Training is an more holistic and structured approach for learning all styles of yoga. Best is to learn it properly and then decide what suits you the best for full benefits.

What do you prefer/enjoy about this particular form of yoga?

I have done yoga with many teachers and not every time I enjoyed. So I realize there are some pre-requisites to enjoy yoga.

• You have to have the right coach who teaches breathing techniques and alignment for postures prior to engaging the students. Many times the teachers are doing it all by themselves and students are senselessly following.

• You must come to the practice with an open heart and humility.

• One must respect the body and not over exert.

• Not all yoga requires you to bend like a pretzel, so as a teacher I tell my students what type of class they should enroll in.

I always teach my students that once they come to the mat they must let go of all other tensions, excitements and problems. This is important for the focus they need during practice. We must start with calming breath as the healing process begins. They should never be in a competing mode. Pace must be observed as it is important to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. During relaxation, I take my clients into another brain frequency in which the brain responds to positive thoughts and emotions.

What are the benefits of yoga?

If you learn yoga and then practice, the

Body is just a tool to control the mind. The society hypnotizes you by feeding ideas and concepts and systems that are only manipulative and benefit only the capitalist mindset. This environment paralyses the mind and that is why there are more slaves then masters. Transformation is like rebirth. You have to forget only then you can get rid of concepts such as pain, trauma, and chronic stress.

I often quote to my students “a yoga teacher is not an instructor. She is a mentor”. People come to a mentor to confide and get advice on life. My inspiration is every student, every song of the bird, the mountains, water lagoons…we cant limit our teachers only to people, nature and love are best teachers.

Yoga is a discipline which means its teaches you how to breath, how to sit, how eat, how to keep the body strong through a vigorous physical practice and mind firm through focus and concentration. However, these are only steps to achieve moksha which is a blissful state without suffering. I often share tools to practice yoga off the mat as well. “yoga is mediation in action and form”, as was said my BKS Iyengar.

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

To be honest, I stumbled upon my career. I am a modest fashion influencer and a full-time employee in a multinational. Speaking of what I always wanted; it was to be a Chartered Accountant,but life had other plans. That being said, without a word of doubt I have zero regrets. Its important to be passionate and self-motivated in order to achieve something, be it something that you wanted or what life stumbles you upon.

What was your “aha!” moment?

The aha moments keep occurring but if I have to talk about one, it was having my Dad saying it to me, “You are my pride!”

What is the #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

To be frank there is a whole list of things that are yet to be ticked off, but #1 would be to travel alone!

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

It wouldn’t be as easy and as fancy as it appears to be. There will be a dozen challenges coming your way to be an obstacle in your journey. But stay put, hang in there, and it will all be worth it.

Name one Boss Lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

There is no one in particular. You meet different people time to time. So I admire not just one but a number of women. My finance teacher Tazeen Arsalan is one hell of a boss lady! My communications teacher Shumaila Omer. My cousin who is a housewife and also a news anchor, Sadia Ghous. So yeah, a couple of them are worth admiring.

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

YES! My entire existence is a living example of a career change. I am a student of BSc in Accounting and Finance and I have always been great with "TO ME, A numbers. When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I was rejected admission in almost every university I applied to despite being a topper in my school and college life. That was a huge setback and it killed my self-confidence, but it also gave me a chance to ponder that life doesn’t end here. The world is full of possibilities and opportunities. So here I am, almost graduating with a 3.5 CGPA and already paying my own bills!

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

Tenacity and persistence; nothing beats it!

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

The wordless pride on my parents’ face, my independence and my husband!

Describe a day in your life.

My day starts at 5:30; mum wakes us all up for Fajr. I love breakfasts so I take a good 45 minutes to enjoy my breakfast and tea while watching my favorite episode. Then I get ready, leave for work on weekdays and university on weekends. My evening is spent with my family having dinner or I step out with my husband and friends. There’s one thing that goes on alongside and that’s my own work; my blog, my content. It never stops.

Persistent, resilient and determined.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

You must wait for the right time. It may be the best thing for you but not the best time. It shall come to you if it’s yours, just wait. Patiently.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Just don’t give up and never be hopeless. No matter what situation you’re in, you MUST put your dreams on top. The rest just follows.

Where did you choose to go and why?

We chose to go to Japan because it was a place we hadn't ever been to but had heard so much about, that we had to go see it for ourselves. Upon going, we were taken aback by the beauty and the culture, the people there, and most importantly the cleanliness!

Tell us the most delicious meal you tried?

When we started planning our trip and thought about the food we'd eat, the first thing that came to mind was sushi. However we later realised that Japanese food is so much more than just sushi. Japanese cuisine is one of the world's most diverse; with fresh vegetables, meats and seafood.
