he Pakistan democratic movement (Pdm) is insisting on holding a rally in Peshawar despite khyber Pakhtunkhwa (kP) government’s refusal to grant permission for a public meeting planned due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country. Pakistan is witnessing a steady increase in coronavirus cases with each passing day as the country recorded 2,738 covid19 cases and 36 deaths in the last 24 hours, said the national command and control centre (ncoc) on friday. the ncoc said that with fresh inclusion of the infections in the country, the national tally of cases now currently stands at 368,665, registering a 36.2 per cent increase in new cases cases over the past seven days. the 11-party anti-government alliance had previously sought permission to hold a rally on Peshawar’s dalazak road, ring road chowk, but Peshawar’s deputy com-

Pakistan registers 36.2Pc increase in new coronavirus cases over Past 7 days

Protect yourself, protect your vote,” she wrote on twitter. one day earlier, federal minister for Planning and development asad umar, who is also the head of the national command and operations centre (ncoc), had said that he requested speaker national assembly asad Qaiser to summon a meeting of the national assembly committee to stop the proposed rally of the opposition alliance in Peshawar. in response, the Pml-n Punjab President rana sanaullah, while speaking to the media on thursday, had said that the opposition was not ready for any negotiation and plans to hold the Pdm rallies in Peshawar and multan as per schedule. after this, there will be a rally in lahore on december 13, he had said and called the government’s “propaganda” a failure. if coronavirus spreads from rallies, there should first be a smart lockdown in gujranwala from where the virus spread after the initial Pdm rally, sanaullah said on the occasion.

Growth in construction activities to strengthen economy: PM ISLAMABAD staff report

Prime minister imran khan has said that growth in construction activities will strengthen the national economy and provide employment opportunities to the people. the prime minister said this while chairing a weekly meeting of the national coordination committee on housing, construction and development on friday. he directed the Punjab government to approve applications for construction as per prevailing laws as soon as possible, besides directing Pakistan telecommunication authority (Pta) and national electric Power regulatory authority (nePra) to work with the state bank of Pakistan (sbP) to resolve issues related to the construction sector at the earliest. the Pm also stressed on public awareness regarding the naya Pakistan housing scheme. sbP governor reza baqir informed the meeting that the banks are ensuring the provision of facilities to the people for obtaining loans under the naya Pakistan housing scheme. moreover, special desks have been set up at around half of the bank branches in each district across the country, he added.

adviser to the Prime minister on institutional reforms dr ishrat hussain on friday said that Pakistan railways (Pr), Pakistan steel mills (Psm) and Pakistan international airlines (Pia) were being restructured to curb financial losses. speaking at a press conference along with minister for information and broadcasting senator shibli faraz, he said that the cabinet had approved the restructuring plan of the Pr while the Psm employees would be given a handsome severance package worth billions of rupees besides restructuring the institution. he said that five companies would be set up to make the railways self-sufficient and profitable department. one company would be set up for the new main line – one while other companies would deal with freight and passenger services, he added. he also said that till 1985, railways was a profitable organisation and earned substantially from its freight service but now 96 per cent freight was taken by trucks and four per-

the Punjab chief secretary briefed the meeting that applications for construction work on 44 million square feet have been received from all over the province and approval for construction on 20 million square feet has been given. he said the commencement of construction work on 44 million square feet in Punjab will start economic activities worth about rs1 trillion. the chief secretary told the meeting that with the enhancement of construction activity, the consumption of all allied materials like cement, bricks and steel had also increased. the khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary informed the meeting that so far, applications for construction on six million square feet have been received. he said that it will generate rs100 billion economic activity in the province. a representative of bank al habib informed the meeting that they have so far approved a loan worth rs6 billion for the construction industry. special assistants to the Prime minister malik amin aslam and shahbaz gill, advisor dr ishrat hussain, federal and provincial secretaries and senior officers also attended the meeting.

cent by the railways. he further said that under an arrangement, 1,200 acres of Psm land would be given under a leasing arrangement to put the industrial unit back on its feet. about 19,000 acres of land would be kept separate and be held by the government, he added. dr ishrat said that the Pia was suffering losses of rs450 billion and had huge debt. under a financial restructuring plan, the national flag carrier employees would be reduced from 14,000 to 7000, he said adding 3,500 of its employees would be offered a voluntary severance package while 3,500 would be reduced by outsourcing core business of the Pia. the per plane employee

would be reduced from 500 to 250 and flights would be made operational for profitable routes, he further said. the former state bank of Pakistan (sbP) governor said that the government would do away with redundant regulations and no objection certificates to facilitate opening of new businesses. the difference in prices of sugar in the market and utility stores was causing distortion in the prices. the flour was available at lower prices in the sahulat bazaars, he added. due to incentives of the government, the construction industry would invest rs1 trillion and business would be generated in more than 30 industries, he informed.
