olloWing a prolonged debate and public demands, Prime minister imran khan on friday finally announced to integrate gilgit-Baltistan (gB) into the country as its fifth province “keeping in view the un security Council resolutions”, radio Pakistan reported. addressing the azadi Parade in gilgit, the prime minister said that his government took the decision keeping in view the “long-standing demand of the people of the region”. imran arrived in the region earlier in the day to join its 73rd independence day celebrations. gB celebrates its independence on november 1 every year to mark the region’s liberation from dogra raj in 1947. “i want to pay tribute to gB scouts and those martyrs who gave sacrifices and freed this region [from indian occupation],” he said. imran further said that he could not speak in detail about a development package because of the upcoming elec-
tions on november 15 but assured the people that his government would prioritise helping the poor and people from underdeveloped areas. the announcement to elevate the status of the region comes weeks before the federal unit goes into its third general election. the prime minister’s visit is the first from any of the central leaders of the ruling Pakistan tehreek-e-insaf (Pti) in the region which has attracted relentless political campaigns from the opposition parties especially the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the run-up to the poll. imran, in his address, also took on the Pakistan democratic movement (Pdm) — the multi-party anti-government alliance of the opposition parties — from “criticising” state institutions. referring to Chief of army staff (Coas) general Qamar Javed Bajwa and inter-services intelligence (isi) director general lieutenant general faiz hameed, he said that the opposition’s criticism of the military leadership has proved he had “appointed right people to the posts”. he was responding to the comments of deposed prime minister and Pakistan
muslim league-nawaz (Pml-n) supreme leader nawaz sharif, who in a series of speeches from london, accused general Bajwa and general hameed of orchestrating his ouster in 2017 and rigging the 2018 general elections. ‘NATION WILL SEE WHO PERSPIRES, SHAKES’: taking a jibe at former national assembly (na) speaker and Pml-n leader for his remarks on the indian pilot, imran said the “nation will see who perspires and whose legs will shake now”. ayaz, while addressing a session of the lower house last week, had claimed the government had released Wing Commander abhinandan Varthaman — the indian air force pilot who was captured in february last year after the Pakistan air force (Paf) shot down his intruding jet during a dogfight — in “capitulation”, fearing “imminent attack” from india. following the claim, inter-services Public relations (isPr) chief major general Babar iftikhar held a press conference on thursday to “set the record straight”, saying abhinandan was released only to “give peace another chance” and not for any other reason. sadiq issued a video clarification as well as held a press talk, saying his statement was blown out of proportion. referring to ayaz’s speech, imran said that the opposition leaders were speaking the language of indian Prime minister narendra modi. “i received congratulatory messages from leaders across the globe for how Pakistan conducted itself after Pulwama and today, he [ayaz] is saying that Pakistan acted out of fear, which was the basis of modi’s entire election campaign,” he added. “and the entire purpose behind this is to blackmail imran khan so that he looks past their looted wealth and gives them a [national reconciliation ordinance] nro,” the premier said. “i want to tell my nation today that imran khan will never forgive these dacoits.”
