HREE policemen were martyred and several others injured in clashes with workers of the banned Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Lahore on Friday, according to media reports. According to a report, Lahore DIG (Operation) Spokesperson Mazhar Hussain identified two of the slain officials as Ayub and Khalid. The identity of the third official has not yet been ascertained, but a statement from the provincial chief minister stated that three policemen were martyred. Hussain said that several others were also injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition. “Protesters also hurled petrol bombs on officials,” he said, adding that officials tried to prevent them from vandalising and damaging public property. “The angry mob also used sticks and pelted stones,” he said, adding that officials were showing restraint de-
spite the violence. Meanwhile, Lahore police spokesman Arif Rana told Reuters that officials fired teargas after the TLP supporters attacked a police checkpoint. They had clashed with the police at several places in the city, he said. “They had assured us that they will remain peaceful but they turned violent,” he told Reuters. A TLP media coordinator, Saddam Bukhari, said the police attacked the peaceful rally that was on its way to Islamabad. In a separate statement, a spokesperson for the banned group said that workers had endured the “worst shelling in history” and were “attacked from all sides” near the Mao College Pul. The chief minister also directed officials to take strict action against those responsible for the incident. “Rule of law must be ensured at all costs,” he said, warning that no one would be allowed to take the law into their hands. He also directed officials to ensure the best possible medical facilities for the injured policemen. Meanwhile, the Punjab government formed a two-member committee to negotiate with the banned Tehreek-e-Labbiak Pakistan (TLP) ahead of the party’s long march to the federal capital. Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat and Prosecution Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin will lead the provincial government’s efforts to hold talks with the proscribed party, announced Usman Buzdar. Security in the twin cities has been placed on high alert with major highways, including the Murree Road, sealed with containers and barricades in an effort to deal with the TLP’s planned march from Lahore to Islamabad. The proscribed party began their march to the federal capital after Friday prayers. In Rawalpindi, link roads from Marir chowk to the Faizabad Interchange and Murree Road to the inner city have been closed for traffic, while roads from Shamsabad and Faizabad to Islamabad have been completely sealed by containers. The expressway from Islamabad, however, was being kept open for traffic in the morning. Opposition parties take to streets across Pakistan against rising inflation lahore Shahab Omer
The opposition parties on Friday took to the streets in various cities across Pakistan to put pressure on the government amid surging inflation in the country. After the call to protest was given by the Opposition, protesters took to the streets in Karachi, Larkana, Lahore, Sukkur, Mardan, Jacobabad, Mohmand, Ziarat, Mingora and other cities of the country. People shouted slogans against the government and rising inflation. Traffic at the Quetta-Chaman highway remained suspended for several hours due to the rally. In Karachi, the demonstration started near the Empress Market area, due to which the surrounding roads had to be sealed. In Lahore, PML-N members staged a protest against inflation at the Jain Mandir Chowk while carrying utility bills and pieces of rotis (bread) in their hands. Akin to that, party members in Muzaffargarh started a protest rally from Central Jamia Masjid to Qanwan Chowk. Members
PM directs Punjab CM to take rapid action against inflation Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday visited Lahore and directed Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar to speed up efforts to provide people relief from inflation by having all relevant institutions spring into action. The PM issued the directive during a meeting with CM Buzdar during his visit to Lahore. “The government is well aware of the suffering of common citizens due to inflation, therefore, it will ensure the provision of relief to the people as much as possible,” said the prime minister. He said that price control committees have been formed to control inflation. He also said that indiscriminate crackdown against hoarders and profiteers will continue in the province. PM Imran Khan directed Buzdar to complete all the ongoing developmental works within the allocated time and ensure their quality. PM Imran Khan said that the law is “equal for all”, adding that the government is making efforts to ensure the supremacy of the law in the country. Addressing the protest rally, Rafique said that Imran Khan Niazi made people unemployed and made life difficult. Addressing Niazi, Rafiq said, “What jobs did you have to give, what houses did you have to give? On the contrary, you have made people unemployed and robbed them of even a one-time bread. You first targeted political parties and made spectacle of NAB cases. Some had to endure one year, some one and a half years and some two and a half years not only in cases but also in jails.
