abad, 1,489 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 1,093 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The death toll from the disease stands at 4,395 with 91 deaths reported over the last 24 hours. A total of 22,418 coronavirus tests were carried out during the aforementioned period. So far 100,802 patients have so far recovered from the disease, so the ratio of recovered patients has crossed 50 per cent. The total number of active Covid-19 patients is 108,273. The nCOC said that there is no patient on a ventilator in GB and AJK. Out of 1,562 ventilators allocated for Covid-19 across the country, 491 at present are occupied, the nCOC added. The provincial governments of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan have also extended smart lockdowns imposed across their respective provinces.

Hundreds of people in occupied Kashmir staged protests on Wednesday, accusing government forces of killing an elderly man in front of his minor grandson during a gun battle with Kashmiri fighters, which also left a trooper dead. The Kashmiri fighters opened fire from a mosque attic in the northern town of Sopore, setting off a battle with security forces, paramilitary police spokesperson Junaid Khan told AFP. The family of Bashir Ahmed Khan alleged that he was dragged out of his car after the showdown and shot dead by paramilitary troopers. His three-year-old grandson, who was travelling with him, was later pictured sitting on his chest. “Locals said that he [Khan] was brought out of his car and shot dead by the forces,” Farooq Ahmed, a nephew of the deceased man told AFP. “They told us that someone in uniform then put the child on his chest as he lay dead on the road and took photographs,” Farooq

IMF revises down Asian economy forecast; warns of $12tr loss globally WASHINGTON agencies

The coronavirus outbreak has been very costly to Asian economic development, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said as it revised down its forecast for the region and warned of possible protracted recovery. “For the first time in living memory, Asia’s growth is expected to contract by 1.6 per cent—a downgrade to the April projection of zero growth,” Chang Yong Rhee, director of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department, wrote in a blog post. According to its recent outlook, the global real GDP could shrink by 4.9 per cent this year, followed by a partial recovery, with growth at 5.4 per cent in 2021. This would result in a cumulative loss to the global economy over two years of over $12 trillion from this crisis. Even the recent positive developments in the epidemic situation in some countries that allowed them to at least partly reopen have not helped to change the gloomy projections. The IMF said it had to downgrade the economic outlook for most countries in the region as they are dependent on global

Ahmed said. The photo of the child sat on the body of his dead grandfather was widely shared on social media. Paramilitary spokesman Khan said the allegation was “baseless”. Police also denied the claims, saying legal action would be taken for “false reports and rumours”. “There was no retaliation from the security forces,” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar told reporters. Hundreds assembled at the man’s funeral near the main city of Srinagar shouting, “ We want freedom”. Government forces have intensified counterinsurgency operations against Kashmiri fighters since a coronavirus lockdown was imposed in March. Since January, at least 229 people have been killed during over 100 military operations across occupied Kashmir, including 32 civilians, 54 government forces and 143 fighters, according to the Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), a rights group.

supply chains, making growth “impossible” while the “whole world is suffering.” Although the IMF expects Asia to rebound strongly to 6.6 per cent as early as next year, it noted that the pandemic is likely to have far-reaching consequences. While regional driver China has already started to return to normal after becoming the first country to be hit by Covid-19, positive developments there are not enough to bring Asia’s economic output back to pre-crisis levels. According to the IMF, the region’s economic output in 2022 will be about five per cent lower com-

pared with earlier predictions. While the Washington-based agency assumes a strong rebound in private demand, it warned that there are “clouds on the horizon” which could undermine recovery. Those worrying signs include shrinking trade, longer than expected lockdowns, rising inequality, weak balance sheets, and geopolitical tensions. Earlier this month, the IMF said that it expects “a deeper recession in 2020 and a slower recovery in 2021” as the virus had an uneven impact on sectors and countries, and there is still no medical solution for it.
