akistan and the international Monetary fund (iMf) have kicked off a week-long negotiation on Wednesday in doha for the 7th Review mission. according to the finance Ministry, federal Minister for finance & Revenue Miftah ismail held a virtual meeting with the iMf Mission chief. the meeting was attended by Minister of state for finance & Revenue aisha Ghous pasha, secretary finance, Governor, state bank of pakistan and chairman federal board of Revenue. the first batch of the senior management of the finance division, state bank of pakistan and

federal board of Revenue has already reached doha for the 7th Review Mission. the finance Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to undertake the reforms envisaged under the program and to complete the structural benchmarks. iMf Mission chief, nathan porter shared with the Minister for finance & Revenue iMf’s assessment of the challenges facing the economy. he sensitized that pakistan’s economy demanded both immediate and long-term measures. the finance Minister stated that the government understands the current economic woes and agreed that it will have to take tough decisions while mitigating the effects of inflation on the middle to low-income groups.

he emphasized that a few of the factors that have adversely affected the economic situation were beyond the control of the government. these included exogenous factors like supply shocks, commodity super cycle and the Russia-ukraine conflict due to which commodity prices further soared. these factors were putting pressure on the current account as well as foreign exchange reserves. the Minister stated that the government would take measures to reduce the burden on the economy while protecting the vulnerable sections of the population. the Minister further stated that we should aim to address structural issues so that pakistan is able to end its fiscal deficit and move towards sustainable growth. the finance Minister thanked the iMf Mission chief for iMf’s support at a difficult time for the global economy. both sides showed keen interest to complete the review successfully. it is pertinent to note that the finance Minister and Minister of state will be joining the team in doha early next week to conclude the discussion with the expectation to clinch an agreement for iMf’s continued support until the successful completion of the program.

Bilawal, Blinken review ties in ‘cordial and positive’ meeting NeW yoRk staff report

foreign Minister bilawal bhutto Zardari on Wednesday held a meeting with us secretary of state antony blinken in new York and discussed bilateral relations and global and regional issues. bilawal had arrived in the us on tuesday to attend the two-day ministerial conference on the threat to global food security on the invitation of blinken. the meeting was “cordial and positive”, bilawal told a journalist in a brief interview. “We reaffirmed the importance of the 75th anniversary of pak-us relations and mutual commitment to strengthening broad-based, comprehensive ties between the two countries,” bilawal wrote in a tweet after the meeting. he said he had in-depth discussions on issues impacting regional peace and security, including afghanistan. “[We] resolved to work together to meet the challenges of food and energy security,” he said. the two sides also discussed expansion of cooperation in trade and investment, energy and climate change, health and education, it and tech, and agriculture as well as the importance of “trade over aid”, according to bilawal. he said the two countries will continue cooperation in defence and ct sectors. Meanwhile, the foreign minister also met united nations secretary General antonio Guterres at the un headquarters.

Imran says families of army personnel will march with him to Islamabad GUJRANWALA Mian abrar

former prime Minister imran khan on Wednesday said the families of army personnel will also take part in his upcoming march to islamabad to remove the “imported government that came to power through a us-backed conspiracy”. addressing a huge public meeting here in Gujranwala, imran said the police will also help you [in getting to islamabad]. “they will send their family members with you and government employees will [do the same] as well. and i know my army’s families will also come with us to islamabad,” he added. imran said he would unveil the date of his long march during a rally in Multan on May 20 (friday). the pti chief hoped he would win the “fight for real independence in islamabad this month”. imran khan said that he neither bowed before anyone in a servile manner nor will let the people of pakistan do that. khan commented on his ouster and said that the office of the prime minister had no value before his eyes. the former premier — while referring to the noconfidence motion that ousted him from power — said that the country’s biggest thieves were brought together to overthrow an elected government through a “foreign conspiracy”. he reiterated that he was calling the nation to march toward islamabad to thwart the foreign conspiracy and to fight for the real freedom of pakistan. praising his government and shedding light on the ongoing economic turmoil in the country, the pti chairman said that there was a significant increase in exports during his tenure.

according to the foreign office, bilawal underscored the importance attached to multilateralism and the un in pakistan’s foreign policy. he stated that pakistan adhered firmly to the principles of the un charter and always supported solutions to global issues in accordance with those principles. bilawal particularly emphasised the need to advance the attainment of the first two sustainable development Goals (sdGs) aimed at ending poverty and hunger. he also highlighted the grim situation in indian illegally occupied Jammu and kashmir (iioJk) marked by grave violations of human rights and illegal demographic changes. he underscored that pakistan desired peace with all its neighbours, including india, which he said will continue to remain elusive unless the kashmir dispute was resolved in accordance with the un security resolutions and the wishes of the kashmiri people. bilawal also lauded the secretary general’s commitment to combat islamophobia and also reaffirmed the resolve to work closely with him on the matter. he appreciated the unsG’s role in mobilising humanitarian and economic assistance for afghan people. the foreign minister shared pakistan’s concern about the spillover of instability in afghanistan into pakistan. he emphasised that the international community’s response must address the urgent humanitarian needs and avoid a complete collapse of the economy in afghanistan that will have dire consequences for ordinary afghans.

is abusing the pMl-n. “he is present at the centre, ruling sindh, making money while the people are abusing pM shehbaz and pMl-n,” he said. berating the sharif brothers, the pti chairman said: “shehbaz sharif is asking what to do after becoming the prime minister. he said that inflation is rising and foreign exchange is tumbling. the two brothers (shehbaz and nawaz sharif) are now trapped and they are wondering what to do.” he said that pM shehbaz thought he would save himself from the federal investigation bureau (fia) after becoming the prime minister. he warned the pM that he will recover all the money from him and send him to jail. khan thanked the supreme court for serving justice to those “who sold their consciences (turncoats).”
