INANCE Minister Hammad Azhar has said that the government has decided to import sugar and cotton from India. Addressing the maiden press conference as the finance minister on Wednesday, Hammad said that it has also been decided to import 0.5 million tonnes of sugar from India. He informed the media that prices of the commodity are lower in India as compared to Pakistan. “In comparison, there’s a rs15 to rs20 difference in per kilogram price of sugar in the
two countries.” He said that the import of sugar will improve the supply situation which will directly benefit the common man. He further stated that sugar will be imported by the private sector. “The price of the commodity in India is lower than what it is in Pakistan and this is the reason behind the decision,” Hammad explained. “The basis of our decisions will be the interest of the country and its people,” he maintained. The minister added that all government departments are working in coordination to provide subsidies to the masses. Hammad said that Pakistan will also open the trade of cotton with India. He maintained that the government has to make tough decisions for the country in view of the given situation. Keeping in view the demand for cotton in the country, the finance minister said the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on the proposal of the Ministry of Commerce has accorded approval for the import of cotton from India by the end of June.
Hammad announced a decrease in the per litre price of petrol by rs1.50 and that of diesel by rs3 till April 15. He said that this is being done after consultations with Prime Minister Imran Khan and keeping in view the trend of oil prices in the international market. According to Hammad, the benefit of the uptick in the value of the rupee
does not come at once, saying Pakistan is making steady progress. “We have made the State Bank autonomous and our decisions are based on the interest of masses.” The finance minister said that the ECC in its meeting on Wednesday fixed the wheat support price at rs1,800 per forty kilograms. He said that this decision

Prime Minister Imran Khan has again made it clear that the government will not impose a blanket lockdown, saying the country cannot afford a lockdown and the implementation of the standard operating procedures (SoPs) will have to be ensured to control the virus. The prime minister said this on Wednesday while chairing a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on Covid-19 through video-link from his Bani gala residence. He noted with concern that the third wave of the coronavirus is much more intense than the first two. He held a telephonic conversation with the chief ministers of the four provinces and directed them to ensure the strict enforcement of SoPs. The prime minister was given a detailed briefing on the purchase of Covid-19 vaccine. The NCC decided to launch a
countrywide drive to promote the use of masks among the masses. later, Interior Minister Sheikh rasheed Ahmed said that no decision regarding a complete lockdown has been made. He added the prime minister is now doing well. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad, earlier in the day, said that a complete lockdown is needed in Pakistan to get a grip on the third wave of coronavirus. “do a lockdown or do not do it, smart lockdown is nothing,”
the chief minister had said while speaking to the media in Islamabad. The Sindh chief minister told reporters that his government believes the centre should ban inter-city transport for two weeks as well. He added that the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic is “dangerous”. “I have antibodies yet I am still afraid of corona[virus],” CM Murad had said, highlighting how dangerous the coronavirus infection is. He also slammed the ongoing country-
wide vaccination policy, saying the government has failed to procure the vaccine and is instead relying on donations from China. Separately, Prime Minister Imran was briefed over the working of the electronic voter machine on Wednesday, besides being presented a practical show of how it would perform. The detailed briefing to the prime minister was given by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, who also presented a practical show of the operation of the machine.

Earlier it emerged that Tarin was likely to be appointed as the financial adviser and after approval of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the decision was likely to be made public. Well-informed sources confided to Pakistan Today that Tarin had been offered the post of finance adviser by a key government figure. Sources said that Tarin would be appointed in a few days. He was also proposed to contest Senate elections. According to sources, key government figure had contacted former finance minister Tarin and offered him the post of the finance adviser. Sources said that Tarin had also expressed his willingness to work as a financial adviser. The former finance minister had asked for a few days before the deployment, they added. It is pertinent to mention here that Tarin attends important meetings of the economic team and is also proposed to contest the Senate elections.
“Shaukat Tarin can work with Hammad Azhar as a financial adviser. The final decision on the appointment of Shaukat Tarin as a financial adviser will be taken by Prime Minister Imran Khan,” the source said. It is pertinent to mention here that Prime Minister Imran Khan had instructed Hafeez Shaikh to resign on Monday. This was PM Imran’s second major decision regarding cabinet reshuffles after Nadeem Babar’s resignation. Shaikh has been replaced by Hammad as the new finance minister. According to the sources, the premier is happy with Hammad’s performance, which is why he has been made finance minister. Further changes are expected in the federal cabinet.
