US will have to recogniSe taliban govt: PM iMran

P

RIME Minister Imran Khan has said “sooner or later” the United States will have to recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan. In an interview with TRT World, the prime minister said that certain quarters in the United States were unfairly targeting Pakistan for the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of American troops from the war-ravaged country. He said there was complete shock and confusion in the US after its troops’ pullout and the swift march of the group. He particularly referred to the recent debate on the Afghanistan debacle in the American Senate as the insurgents returned to power after two decades. He said Washington was looking for scapegoats and targeting Pakistan for their failure in containing the Taliban which was unfair. “They are not in rational mindset,” he added. The Afghanistan army melted and this was what completely surprised the US, he said, adding if the Taliban govern-

ment collapsed, the biggest losers would be the people of that country. “They must come up with a solution and think about the people of Afghanistan,” he said. The prime minister warned if the Afghan people were left in a limbo, the crisis was going to deepen. He maintained that there was a looming humanitarian crisis as Afghanistan survived on foreign aid. If this component was left out, and unless there was help in the short term, the Taliban would not be able to stand on their feet, he said. “So there is a greater danger of collapse, chaos and humanitarian crises.” The prime minister said Pakistan would have been the most affected nation if there was chaos in Kabul. Khan, to a question, said that during 2017, he met the American leadership and explained to them the situation in Afghanistan, but they were clueless. The American society had no idea of the situation in Afghanistan. “What happened now totally took

them by surprise. You see in the US Senate, they have no idea,” he lamented. In the past as well, former army chief, Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, had also explained the Afghan situation to the US leadership. The prime minister further elaborated that as immediate neighbour to Afghanistan with strong traditional and ethnic affinities, Pakistan knew the history of that country. He said Pakistan shared a long, porous border with Afghanistan whose half the population was Pashtun, residing on either sides of the Durand Line. There was no military solution to the Afghan dispute as the people did not accept foreigners and under their traditions, they sought revenge if someone was killed at their homes, he added. To explain his point, the prime minister said the people inhibiting tribal areas, led by groups such as Tahreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, started attacking Pakistan when the government had decided to side with the US. While on the Afghan soil, there was a collateral damage and drone attacks which led to swelling of militant ranks, so that Taliban movement grew. The prime minister also denounced former US president George Bush’s threat after the 9/11 attacks asking Pakistan to side with the US. He termed it an “imperialistic attitude” and “ridiculous policy”. If you did not agree with the US policy or its military operations, he said, you were branded as pro-Taliban. Prime Minister Khan said: “I do not believe in military solutions.” He said he was even against Iraq war as use of military force yieleded no solutions. He said in 9/11 attacks, no Pakistani was involved, but the country had to suffer colossal damage in the US-led war. About 80,000 lives were lost, huge chunk of tribal population had been displaced with hundreds of billions of losses to its fragile economy, while its border areas were devastated. Pakistan had made these sacrifices for the US as mere a scapegoat, he added. News Desk

Sharif was battling cardiac ailments and was flown out of Pakistan on an air ambulance on September 28 for a surgery in the US scheduled for next week. However, he was admitted to a hospital in Germany during a stopover as his condition deteriorated during the flight to US. Born in 1955 in Karachi, Sharif started off as a comedian in stage dramas in 1974. An illustrious career spanning nearly five decades saw him being widely hailed as Pakistan’s “King of Comedy.” He also tried his luck in television and films, producing several major hits. The stage, however, remained his forte as he, along with the late comedy icon Moin Akhtar, who passed away in 2011, pioneered stage dramas in Pakistan. Sharif performed in dozens of countries around the world during his career. His talent transcended the boundaries of politics, as proven by the love and adoration he received in India, where many entertainers over the years regard Sharif as a teacher and mentor.
