aking a jibe at the opposition parties resisting the recent legislation, Prime minister imran khan thursday said that the politicians resisting voting rights for non-resident Pakistanis and use of Electronic voting machines (Evms) were part of the status quo that benefited from the old ‘corrupt system’.
addressing a ceremony held for the launch of a digital portal to enable overseas citizens to verify the power of attorney, the premier congratulated overseas Pakistanis on getting the right to vote, saying all future governments would now value Pakistani expats and work for their facilitation. “it made me especially happy yesterday that we have now included overseas Pakistanis in Pakistan’s democracy,” the prime minister told the ceremony. he said

the rights given to expats meant that “now every government will be bound to value our overseas Pakistanis because they can now vote.” “when they vote, the nine million nonresident Pakistanis will vote for the government that can improve their lives. so the biggest benefit will be that a citizen can keep a check on the government through their vote in a democracy,” he emphasised. the premier said the passage of legislation regarding Evms also made him very happy, and noted that rapidly changing technology was bringing ease to humans’ lives in all spheres. “so there can’t be a more foolish mentality than avoiding the use of technology today,” he said, recalling that a government commission and the ECP had recommended the use of Evms as far back as 2008. “But why weren’t they accepted? [Because] all the people benefiting from the old system will never allow change.” Prime minister imran said Evms were being used “all over the world”, adding that the machines would put an end to issues of wastage of votes, fake votes, and votes cast in the name of deceased people.

Extremism not rooted in madressahs but schools, colleges: Fawad ISLAMABAD staff report
minister for information and Broadcasting fawad Chaudhry thursday triggered a new controversy, saying that extremism in Pakistan was not rooted in madressahs but schools and colleges. addressing a consultative conference on terrorism here, fawad Chaudhry said the school teachers were hired during the 1980s and 1990s as part of a plot to ‘basically teach extremism’. Chaudhry said that the students of ‘ordinary schools and colleges’ had been involved in notable incidents of extremism in Pakistan and not of madressahs. Because, he went on, “you closed their (school and college students’) minds. if you cultivate a society where an opposing view is immediately declared kufr (heresy) … how can you present an opposing view?” “and if no opposing views are tolerated, how will you bring a soft change [in society]?” he asked rhetorically. in this regard, Chaudhry gave the example of late Jamiat ulemai-islam-fazl leader and religious scholar maulana hassan Jan, whom

promise to expel the french ambassador over the publication of blasphemous caricatures. his detention was scheduled to end on July 10 in light of a decision of the review board of the supreme Court. however, the office of the deputy commissioner issued a fresh notification extending the detention for another three months under section 11-EEE (powers to arrest and detain suspected persons) of the anti-terrorism act. on august 2, rizvi, through his uncle, filed another petition with the lahore high Court (lhC), claiming the government extended his detention with “mala
