RIME Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that the government would work hard to transform Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) into a developed province and provide all the basic facilities, which had been taken out of the reach of the poor people by the Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf (PTI) government. How many hospitals and health facilities the PTI’s provincial government had
constructed and provided free of cost treatment and medicines to the poor people during its rule?” questioned the prime minister while addressing a huge rally at Bisham. Criticising the PTI’s government, he said the price hike had reached to a historic peak in the last four years with huge debt hovering around Rs24,000 billion. “due to their corruption and incompetency, the previous rulers even did not put a single brick to the stalled projects. The BRT was delayed causing billion of rupees losses,” he said, adding the former
rulers only unveiled plaques of the projects launched by the PMl-n government. He said during the PMl-n rule in Punjab province, the orphans, widows and hopeless were provided with free-of-cost treatment and now the same facilities have been restarted after gap of four years. The medicines are being provided irrespective of the class differences, he added. The prime minister also assured similar provision of health facilities in KP as well. He went on to say that if Punjab develops alone then it is not development of Pakistan. RS2 BIllIon GRAnT FoR BIShAM: He announced a development grant of Rs2 billion for Bisham tehsil to resolve civic and municipal issues related to water and road maintenance. He also announced a medical college for the area. He said that among other measures, he would make efforts to ensure the completion of the Puran grid station in three months and expedite work on the Bisham-Khwazakhela expressway. He said Punjab would be reducing wheat prices and appealed to KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan to do so as well. He added that if the chief minister does not reduce the prices, then he would himself “give money for cheaper wheat”. The price of wheat in KP and Punjab would be brought at par over the next few days, he added. He also appealed to the KP chief minister to make medicines and treatment for poor people free in hospitals, otherwise, Shehbaz said he would address the issue himself and ensure the free provision of health facilities. He said that if he is given the opportunity then he would ensure free health services in all hospitals of the country. “People of KP, it is my promise to you that I will rest only after solving your basic issues,” he assured.
Govt nominates Baligh-ur-Rehman as Punjab governor news desk Pakistan Muslim league-nawaz (PMl-n) leader Mohammad Balighur-Rehman has been nominated for the position of Punjab governor. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent a summary to President dr Arif Alvi, seeking appointment of Balighur-Rehman as Punjab governor. Earlier, Rehman had served as education minister in former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s cabinet from August, 2017 to May, 2018. He was elected as Member of national Assembly (MnA) on PMl-n’s ticket for the first time in 2008 and then later in 2013. The Shehbaz-led government had approached the president twice for the removal of incumbent Punjab governor omar Sarfaraz Cheema. Cheema has been causing problems for the PMl-n in Punjab ever since he was given the post by former premier Imran Khan during his last days in power. The governor
Marriyum announces withdrawal of FIA’s petition seeking restoration of PECA Section 20 news desk Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Saturday announced the immediate withdrawal of a review petition filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the Supreme Court for restoration of the section 20 of Prevention of Electronic Crime Act (PECA), 2016. In a series of tweets, Marriyum said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken strict notice of the petition filed by the FIA regarding PECA. “The Prime Minister and I learned a short while ago that FIA has filed a petition in SC against the IHC judgment regarding PECA, 2016 to seek restoration of section 20 of the Act. Please note that this petition stands withdrawn immediately, as it is squarely against the government’s stated policy and principle of standing for and ensuring freedom of expression,” tweeted the information minister. She regretted that the news of the petition had reached to her and the prime minister a “little late” as
they were in Bisham for a public gathering during the day and there were no signals. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), which was made part of the petition, welcomed PM Shehbaz Sharif’s order for withdrawing the petition.
The journalists’ body said that it has been appealing for an “urgent meeting” of the Joint Action Committee to review the PECA. “For cordial media-government relations, dialogue is the only solution for ensuring right of expression and press freedom,” said the PFUJ.
Before the directives were issued to withdraw the petition, the PFUJ had expressed concern over the plea. In a statement, the body had demanded the FIA to withdraw the plea and also appealed to PM Shehbaz to take notice of the petition. PETITIon: Earlier in the day, the FIA had approached the Supreme Court for the restoration of the section 20 of the PECA. In its plea, the FIA had contended before the Supreme Court whether the Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah was “justified or correct” to strike down the section 20 of the PECA. The agency had asked the apex court to examine whether the Islamabad High Court “has not advertently overstepped its legal parameters earmarked” in Article 199. It wanted the court to determine whether the striking of the section was tantamount to “undue intermeddling with the affairs of the federation”.
